The transactions in the register are fixed, so those exchanges are at
the conversion entered with the transaction.

The PriceDB is only used when converting rates in reports (or the Chart
of Accounts). For that, the "most recent" or "closest-in-time" is used,
depending on the display case. This is because GnuCash is trying to
show you the value of your holdings at the date in question.

It is not a typo. There is a difference between
OFX/QFX and QXF.

OFX/QFX is the Open Financial eXchange (and a quicken variant). GnuCash
can import this.

However, QXF is the Quicken eXchange Format, which is their new,
proprietary storage format. GnuCash cannot import QXF.

Are you sure your bank is exporting QFX and not QXF? Also, could you
get quicken to export QIF?

Hope this helps,

It always tries to use the most recent (or closest-to-date) exchange
rate. So of course March 21 will take precendence over March 18.

Considering both at 1:47 I don't see the problem.

The bold and italic using star(*) and slash(/) characters is purely an
MUA function and has nothing to do with HTML or the list.

The list strips off text/html and only passes text/plain.
There is no blue here, because the HTML was stripped.
If you're seeing blue, it's a function of your MUA.

Good.

I assume this is your first time reconciling in GnuCash? If so, that is
correct. In general you can safely ignore the starting balance -- if
there is a difference it means something "earlier" is not properly
reconciled so you will need to click off "extra" stuff.

> 3) Ending Balance matches my statement

Good. If it doesn't you need to enter in the correct ending balance
from your statement.

> 4) there is a -$700 reconcile Balance.

I presume there is a $700 opening balance in the account? Just
reconcile that the first time, too.

> I just do not understand

Reconciliation is always "from the beginning of time through the end
date". This means that the first time you reconcile an account you need
to also include the opening balance transaction in the reconcile
process.

Going forward you wont have to do that, because the starting balance
*should* match your account statement.

Hope this helps!

to *manually* attach the payment to the invoice/customer. There is no

What Page/Tab were you on when you clicked it? As I suggested in my

Hi,

Which "close" did you accidentally hit, and where did you "hit" it?
There are several options that come to mind:

1) The "Close Book" Tools-menu item
2) The [x] in the upper corner of the window (usually top-right in the
titlebar area). This is the window-manager "close" and can cause
   GnuCash to exit.
3) The [x] in the tools-icon-row, which closes the current tab

In the case of '2', it will close all tabs in the window. If this is
the only window you have open, it will exit gnucash.

In the case of '3', it depends which window/tab you were in when you hit
the button.

It SOUNDS like you did '3' in the Chart of Accounts tab. GnuCash
*TRIES* to prevent you from doing this, but if you have multiple windows
open you can still get it to happen. In this case, going to View -> New
Accounts Page will create a new Chart of Accounts tab.

Note that there is NOTHING you can do in the GnuCash window to delete
your data en-masse. So there is no reason to have to "restore from
backup" here.

Hope this helps,

It's always there. It just defaults to 1 pixel wide. You must have
accidentally double-clicked in the column or grabbed the rate-column
header and dragged it.

Just grab the right-side of the header and drag it left to again reduce
the column width to 1 pixel.

Alas, there is no way to have a "hidden" column in the register code. :(

Today it was reported that Wiki new-user registrations were not

The errant extensions have been updated and the resigration service

Please keep in mind that on the Mac, double-clicking on a GnuCash file has
no effect. It will start GnuCash, but GnuCash will ALWAYS open the

Many reasons...
 -- 20+ years of history.
-- Monitoring a forum is MUCH harder, unless you use email
notifications, in which case, might as well START with email.
-- SPAM prevention is easier on a mailing list

I could continue, but honestly, it's not worth my time.. Search the

There was definitely some keyboard issues in 3.3, but it should have

There's no reason you should not be able to type a slash in the date column.

Nabble is a third-party service not at all connected with the GnuCash
project. GnuCash has no forums, just an email list. Nabble takes that
list and, in however they do it, provides a web front end. IF you decide
to use Nabble's services, you are doing so completely separate from the
GnuCash mailing lists.

So to answer your question, yes, you need a separate login between Nabble
and GnuCash. If you signed up for the GnuCash lists you can NOT use that
login at nabble. And if you sign up for nabble, your posts will get
moderated until you sign up for the list with GnuCash.

Enjoy!

Actually, there is a preference here where if you type DD/MM and tab
out, it will choose from a 12-month rolling window to select the year.
So right now, on April 17th, 2019, if I type 12/31 it would input

Yes, and then you can reduce the size of the Description field.

The Description field will ALWAYS auto-expand to fill the window size, but
it will not auto-reduce. So you need to expand the list beyond the window
(so the scrollbar appears) and only then can you reduce the description
field size.

Please do not confuse QFX with QXF. They are different.

QXF is a Quicken eXchange Format -- it is proprietary and GnuCash cannot

QFX is a Quicken version of OFX, but follows the same SGML standard and

No need to do that. Just tab off the second row (TAB off, don't hit
Enter/Return), and Gnucash will create a new row for you. Enter that row.
Tab off the end. Poof -- another row. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Only hit Enter/Return when you are DONE with the whole shebang.

GnuCash does not require you to use specific categories. You could just
have a single account, "Expenses", and use that for all charges. So you
could have a minimal account tree in GnuCash that looks something like:

Assets
   Bank
Liabilities
   Credit Card
Income
Expenses
Equity
   Opening Balances

Then you could just create transactions from Liabilities:Credit Card to
Expenses for all your charges, and Assets:Bank for payments.

But honestly, it really sounds like you've already implemented most of
what you need already in your database, so you're probably better off
just extending your existing database for the additional features you
need.

Had you started with GnuCash originally I would say something different,
but really, using GnuCash for what you want probably is overkill since
you've already got most of GnuCash's functionality implemented in your
DB.

Good Luck!

There is not a separate preference.
The process should work the same for OFX/QFX import vs. Online Actions.
Indeed, it is the same underlying code.

Perhaps the tokenizing is less effective in the OFX/QFX import such that
it's not getting good tokens to match on?

Sounds like you have Auto-Split Ledger or Transaction Journal mode
turned on. Go to View -> Basic Ledger to return to single-line mode.

Another reason you would be in a Transaction Journal mode is if you did

I can search for other words in the memo field. Is there something

If I search the entire book (search initiated from the accounts window),
I do see results. It's doubly strange that the search is different
depending on where I initiated it, given that all the results are in the

CUR is "currency". For example, "Total (USD)". The default total column
only shows in the account commodity (which may be a currency, or may be a
stock or other fund). In this case, different commodities are not rolled
up, because you cannot add Apples and Oranges together. The "Total (CUR)"
means convert all values to the currency CUR and display that.

I'll note, however, that the roll up should occur anyways, but it does
require that you have an entry in the PriceDB back to your default
currency. Do you have that entry?

Where are you looking to see these totals? I presume in the Chart of
Accounts? You definitely will NOT see it in the parent account register.

In the CoA, it will show up if you have a Total(CUR) column shown.

You are confusing the VERB split -- the act of splitting two things into
pieces -- and the NOUN split, which are the results of the splitting.
While you are correct that a simple transaction has been split(v) only
once, that does not imply that it is made of one one split(n).

It is absolutely reasonable to use the same word to mean (slightly)
different things as a verb and as a noun. It's also quite clear from
context (at least most of the time) whether you are using split(v) or
split(n).

When you say "split the wood in two" you are using split(v), not split(n).
Calling each piece of the result a split(n) is perfectly reasonable,
which is what GnuCash does.

Have you ever heard the term "wine split"? It refers to a 187ml bottle of
wine, which is the result of splitting up a 750ml bottle into 4 parts, or
a 350ml bottle into two. Are you going to argue that a wine split (which
is yet another term-of-art) is wrong and go tilt at the wine industry
windmill next? ;-)

> I see no problems with the use of terms like 'simple transaction' (with
> one split and two parts) or with 'compound transactions' (with 2+ splits
> and 3+ parts), but it doesn't make sense to refer to the parts as splits.

Why not? split(n) is a perfectly reasonable phrase. And again you are
confusing split(v) with split(n), which is going to cause even more
confusion.

> Why not just use the term 'parts' or 'transaction parts' or even invent a

The data file contains "Splits". Having different terms in the UI vs the
underlying data is a way to cause irreperable brain damage down the road
when someone not alive today becomes a developer in a couple decades and
tries to mentally map a Foobob to a Split and doesn't understand why the
name was changed.

Not saying we CAN'T do it, but seriously, how many words in the English
language have both a verb and a noun and can mean slightly different
things? (cheating answer: many).

Have a good weekend!

Sorry, no, I know of no way to disable that step without changing the

The difference is "exactly 2 splits" vs "more than 2 splits".

Simple tranaction: exactly 2 splits. The basic view mode in the
ledger lets you enter these simply, and the Transfer field shows the
"other" account.

Compound transaction: > 2 splits. The Transfer field shows "Split
Transaction" and you must expand the transaction to see the other
accounts.

Those ARE the definitions. If you don't like them, well, I'm sorry, but
it's like saying you don't like the sky being Blue and would prefer if
it was purple with pink polka dots.

The fact remains, a simple transaction *is* a special case of a compound
transaction as far as the UI is concerned. If you expand a simple
transaction you'll see both splits.

I am fine with that approach. In my mind it's always clear, tho, that
"split transaction" implies "compound transaction", and "transaction
splits" are the individual entries that tie the transaction to each
account. But whatever, I've only been using these terms within gnucash
for 20 years now. What do I know? :)

I believe it has been committed to the repository already. If not,

I agree that some things are best done outside GnuCash, but GnuCash can
certainly get you most of the way there.

This would be much harder, I think, if you had separate data files.
Especially because GnuCash doesn't like having multiple files open
simultaneously.

I don't understand your point? These are two orthogonal issues.

There is the issue of year start/end, and there is the issue of whether
to hold multiple years in a single data file. You seemed to imply that
a calendar year was sufficient, and I was pointing out that no, it is
not.

This is completely separable from the other question of whether to have
separate files for each year.

Here in the US, organizations are free to set up any financial year they
wish. Many still choose a calendar year, but certainly may are on a

You would have to have GnuCash keep track of multiple files.
Search the code history for Gemini. There was, at one point, an attempt
at doing this. But really, searching across multiple files is not as
straightforward as you would think.

This is what happens you expand a simple transaction (which has only 2
splits) by clicking on the "Show Splits" button, or change the View to
Split-ledger or Transaction Journal mode. It will display as a compound
transaction but have only two lines (plus the blank spilt line).

Archiving old books is always a good idea.

Restarting at the begining of the year, however, is not necessarily is
good idea. Specifically, there is a Close Books feature that zero's out
your Income & Expense accounts into Equity, but it doesn't actually
DELETE any data.

Your other option is to Export the account tree which will create an
empty file and then re-open it. The downside is that you will have to
reset all your opening balances, and if you use any business features
you will need to manually re-enter all that metadata too (customers,
vendors, tax tables, etc). I highly ANTI-recommend this approach.

Personally, I don't do anything. All the reports handle year-end
accounting without doing anything special. I don't mind seeing my
income and expense account balances showing lifetime achievements :)
But that's just me.

Hope this helps,

In my opinion (humble or otherwise), I feel that Linux is #1, then
MacOS, and then Windows. Windows is by far a second-class citizen; none
of the developers actually do main development on Windows, whereas John
DOES do main development on Mac. Most devs still use Linux.

Importing or inputting?

Right now it's the same interface, in general. The only difference is
whether or not you expand the view to show all the splits.

You CAN enter basic (two-split) transactions in the expanded view. Or
you can enter them in the basic (one-line) view. Either way works, and
for many users the basic view is easier to understand.

However, if entering a three-or-more-split (what we call "multi-split",
often shortened to "split") transaction, one MUST used the expanded
view.

First thing to try: Do you have another copy of GnuCash open?
If NOT... What happens of you try "Open Anyway"?

Here's what's going on. When GnuCash is open, it creates the lock file to
ensure a second copy doesn't grab the file and possibly cause you to lose
data. If you shut down the computer while GnuCash was still running then
GnuCash didn't exit cleanly and, as a result, didn't delete the lock file.

The "Open Anyway" option is basically your way to tell GnuCash that this
is what happened.

So, does that work?

They would need to break into your computer, first, to access your data!
MySQL has a network flair to it, which means that there are probably MORE
people who can access that than your laptop/desktop with correct user

Note that AFAIK, mysql connections are not encrypted, so someone listening
on your network could see your data. Your password is probably secure
because I do believe that it uses a hashed value over the wire. But if
you're doing it for security only, you're kind of missing the point. :(

As I said, the string field is converted to an integer using the
C-language atoi() function and then the sort happens using the numerical
value. So the string . with be converted into the number and
that will be used to sort. If is 0001, this would be sorted before a
of 2. Basically, the conversion for sorting will stop at the first
non-numeral character. That's why using . works. Or -.
Even A will work (this is all assuming the and are all
numerals).

So 00011.16298462 will come before 2.294362. If it were a pure string
compare, then this would not be the case.

Yes, if you want to order your transactions in a specific order but then
also be able to sort by a transaction number then yes, you would need to
do what you suggest and put the default-sort-order into Num, and the
transaction number into another field.

But why would you want to do that?

You could still SEARCH for transaction number even if you overload num
with .. But yes, you couldn't sort on the
portion -- I just don't see the use case for that.

Have you tried using the default hierarchies that come with GnuCash?
That should get up set up quickly, and then you can add or remove accounts
as needed to customize to your situation.

> My question is, shouldn't these be child accounts? Also, do I set up a
> single of each Equity, Liability and Asset accounts as parent accounts

Well, consider a simple account hierarchy, Expenses:Groceries. In this
example, Expenses is a top-level account, and also a parent account. most
likely it is also a placeholder account (meaning it cannot hold
transactions itself). The Groceries account is a child of Expenses.

As you probably know, you generally don't set opening balances on Income
and Expense accounts.

In GnuCash, SOP is to transfer from Equity:Opening Balances -> to set up the opening balance. So no, you don't
generally go from Eq:O-B -> Assets -> Assets:Current Assets -> ... etc,
but directly from Eq:O-B to the target.

Hope this helps,

There really is no need to do this. The Number field is a string-entry,
it will let you input anything you want. The SORTING mechanism from the
Num field is a NUMERIC sort; it effectively performs the C-function call
atoi() on the contents. This means you could do something like:

1.16274
2.0023
3.172323

And it will sort based on the 1, 2, 3.

In my opinion, it is better to set up the CoA and then you can map the
QIF Accounts to GnuCash Asset/Liabilities and then QIF Categories and
Memo/Payees to GnuCash Income/Expense accounts.

If you import and then switch stuff around, the importer will not know
about the moves and future mappings will be incorrect.

> 2) Is it better to import one account at a time, or all together with
> multiple qif files? I have seen both suggested...

IMHO, it depends.  Sometimes it is better to do it all at once;
sometimes it is better to do it piecemeal. I think the best thing is to
try it and see. You can always quit without saving to "start over".

> 3) Would it help to import, say, one year of data to train the druid and
> then the rest?

It depends on how consistent your data is.

The payee/memo matcher in the QIF importer always works on full strings,
so if you have entries like "QuickTrip 1234567" and then "QuickTrip
2345678", the importer will not be able to match them the same.

Yes. It means you specified the same GnuCash account as the source and
destination of the transaction. I.e., you said "I took $100 from BANK and
sent it to BANK". This is probably not what you intended.

> Can someone maybe explain in simple terms how to import bank data and use
> it
> to populate all transactions (rather than entering transactions and then
> assigning each transaction to an existing entry)?

Yes. Let's say you have a QIF file called 'bank.qif'. GnuCash will
assume this is for the QIF Account named 'bank'. All transactions in this
file will be associated with 'bank', and then you need to map each
transaction to the correct destination account.

The Importer will first ask you to map the QIF Account "bank" to some
GnuCash (asset) account. So for example, Assets:SunTrust:Checking. There
may be other QIF accounts in the file, and those too should map to GnuCash
Asset and Liability accounts.

Then it will ask you to match the Categories, which you should map to
GnuCash Income/Expense accounts.

Finally, it will ask you to match the Payee/Memo lines (which is what you
have here). These you will also need to map correctly to the
Income/Expense accounts. So for example, you should map "INTEREST" to,
e.g. Income:Interest and "PAY ANYONE ANZxxxL EGGS 0139314487BILL" to,
e.g., Expenses:Groceries.

Your mistake is that you mapped each of these payees/memos to the same
(bank) account that you mapped bank to.

> Also, the manual states that “Debit and Credit” terms can be replaced with
> “Deposit and Withdrawal” for newbies. However, Account view shows columns
> labelled “Increase and Decrease”. Confusing!

The headings are based on the exact account type. If you use a Bank, it
will be Deposit and Withdrawal. If it's a credit card, Charge and
Payment. Increase and Decrease are for generic Asset accounts.

Edit the account in question and check on the account type.

The QIF import did lazy account creation -- it would only touch your
actual account tree at the end, after you click "Finish". The Generic
Importer, however, will make account modifications enroute, including
creating new accounts.

For QIF, new accounts wont get properly mapped into the tree, so you
either need to pre-create the gnucash account and map it in the
importer, or you need to modify the QIF to read, e.g.:

LExpenses:Groceries

instead of:

LGroceries

to properly place it in the tree.

As you use Nabble, you have a different interface. I honestly don't
know what Nabble does, but I SUSPECT the default is "reply-to-list." But
I honestly don't know for sure; Nabble is a 3rd party service.

When you import from QIF there are two ways to look at it:

1) You could create an account structure first (e.g. by the File
Hierarchy assistant) and then map your QIF accounts to the gnucash
   structure, or

2) You can let the QIF importer create the new accounts for you.

The only problem with #2 is that it will put most of your categories
into top-level Expense accounts. So instead of having
Expenses:Groceries, your "Groceries" category will get created as a
top-level "Groceries" expense account.

It was probably unclear in the wiki that option #1 means creating the
accounts in gnucash first and then mapping them during the qif import.
If you do #2 and then restructure, the QIF import mappings will be wrong
if you do a subsequent import.

You can't. Qif only imports transactions. If you have no transactions
then the importer will do nothing.

just the accounts. The import seems to run but when the page to 'Match QIF

I tried the same import with GnuCash 2.6.21-3 and got the same results.

Re: [GNC] [MAINT] server upgrade planned Feb 3, 2019 1200-2300 US/EST

2019-02-02 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi,

Just a reminder that this is planned for tomorrow. I'm still not 100%
sure of the exact timing, but I'll announce on IRC before I start and
will be available on IRC during the process. I'll send mail when the
upgrade is complete!

Strangely, this was half-configured already, but the certificates weren't
there. Not sure how that happened, but it's been fixed. Can you try
again now and let me know?

When you delete an account, GnuCash will ask you what to do with all the
transactions in the account. Your choices are basically:

  * move them into another account, or
  * move them into Orphan-XXX (where XXX is the currency)

There is no way to "mass delete" a bunch of transactions.

Let me ask you a different question here.. Credit card payments were made
from your checking account to the CC account -- so if THOSE transactions
were correct, then... where is the problem? Is the problem that you did
not account for your actual CC charges?

What balances are "off"?

Yes, this file will be over-written at the next upgrade.
Creating a new file would require you to get gnucash to load it..

IMHO, you should make the edits to fin.scm now, and then make a patch
and submit to to Bugzilla for inclusion in future versions.

If that's a blank page then that means you have no data open. Did you try
using File -> New File? That might have done it.

Let's start over -- Go to File -> Open and then get to the folder where
your data file is located and open it. What happens then?

Re: [GNC] Lost all my transactions on Gnu cash

2019-01-22 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi,

So if that didn't work -- how is it telling you that it is read-only?
Could you supply a screen shot?
Maybe a step-by-step of what you do and what happens?

I'm at a loss for what else would cause a read-only situation here except,
perhaps, you opening a placeholder account.

Thanks,

-derek
