Re: [GNC] QIF imports fails in 5.6

2024-05-02 Thread Doug
Luckily, OXF & CSV still work. bit more stuffing around, but actually easier to
view what is happening.
You need to tell the import the account on CSV, but it seems easier to select
the accounts
that I am transferring to so I might continue using csv imports.

Re: [GNC] find and replace

2021-01-30 Thread Doug
Just a quick idea:
Perhaps you can do a sort on the known string of memo text. Next, as you edit &
change categories, also edit the text (perhaps add a star or something in the
middle) The search should drop that item then

You can also look in the unassigned category. As you change fields from
unassigned to another category, they will drop out of unassigned.

Re: [GNC] What is the purpose of hidden accounts?

2021-08-22 Thread Doug
Hi,
I can only mention my own use of hidden accts: I have used Gnucash since 2003
abt, & my old accts get moved to a holder place
(in my case ´´ for reasons that might be obvious!) These accts still exist,
but are hidden in reports. Good to keep them
for historical accounting purposes. (such as in Australia, calculating Capital
gains tax)

Re: [GNC] Moving Sub-Accounts???

2021-09-05 Thread Doug
First, I am a user, not an X-pert!

You can easily move accounts by editing them. (This lets you select where they
go).

You can set up a placeholder account first, so you can attach accounts under
that placeholder.

If you want to move all transactions from one account to another, set it up as
a sub account first.
Then delete the account & the transactions move to the account above. (I think
this is undocumented, so use at your own risk!)
this is good when you want to combine accounts.

Sounds like you are a new user. Keep in mind that you can use maths to split
deposits: this is useful where you split amounts into known amounts (eg 1/3rd)
I find this useful where tax amounts are split into personal & tax claimable
for instance.

(btw, download the documentation package: there is a LOT of useful info there!)

good luck!

[GNC] Default Accounting period permanent change (Ver 4.6 still..)

2021-10-08 Thread Doug
Hi,
has anyone changed the default accounting period in the reports window?
Currently they are set to 1 Jan to 31 Dec. Australian Tax year is 1 July to 30
June.

I know I can set them report by report, but it would be nice to change the
defaults.

I am currently using ver 4,6 on Linux (PCLinuxOS, which I have been using for
years & love!)

regards, Doug (Long time Gnucash user & appreciator!)

Re: [GNC] Default Accounting period permanent change (Ver 4.6 still..)

2021-10-09 Thread Doug
Thanks Alan. Yes, knew that. I am certainly no accountant, but manage to bumble
along.

I think it might be possible to set the defaults in the setup file, but
honestly have not looked.
What I would like is to be able to define the Financial Year start/Financial
Year end in setup so
it always defaults to the current financial year ()which in Australia´s case
is 1 July to 30 June).

I wonder how many other countries have non-Calendar year Financial years? I
guess the UK might copy us
seeing we seem to copy their laws in our early days.

Re: [GNC] Default Accounting period permanent change (Ver 4.6 still..)

2021-10-09 Thread Doug
Thanks, that is the type of setting I want, but the documentation says it all:
to quote:
I've been using this hack which changes the definition of current and
previous year in reports to start 1 July. It will be overwritten each time
a new version of GnuCash is installed and it's unlikely to work with the
next major release.
(end)

I feel what is needed is for it to be a part of the configuration settings
window.

Until implemented. I will just set the dates for each report. I am certainly
no programmer

Re: [GNC] question from newbie

2021-11-07 Thread Doug
Similar comment, by a non-accountant. What I do with transactions that are
planned is to enter them when I place
the forward transaction with the bank, & set the date as when the account will
be paid (or transferred).
I can always see the current day balance by looking at the dividing line on the
account at todays date.
Recurring expenses such as loan payments, periodical payments etc are copied
using the duplicated transaction,
then edited if required. This is handy for transactions with multiple splits
(such as your pay if employed),
where the amounts might change, but the splits remain fairly consistent (albeit
with changed amounts).
eg in my case for deposited weekly pay (before I retired!) I had (to give an
idea) Total pay> Income; Tax> Tax; Superannuation> Super;
various benefits & payments such as Union fees> relevant accounts. By using a
duplicated transaction, it is
easier to remember exactly how the splits are distributed.
Hope that helps Mr Newbie!

On Thu, 27 Jul 2023 03:14:07 -0500
my 2c worth: I have been running Gnucash on PCLinuxOS forever (or so it seems).
They are usually up to date with releases. Currently Build ID:
5.3+(2023-06-26).
Loaded weeks ago.

Love both Gnucash, & PCLinuxOS: they both just work!
Only thing I could have used was GST support(a VAT type tax used in Australia)
when I was running a
business, but now I am retired, who cares! (the go-go years, the slo-go years,
then the no-go years! Currently towards end of go-go...

Thanks to the Developers for the support over the years.

regards, Doug

Re: [GNC] Is there an 'easy' way to have a transaction with 'sub-transactions' as it were?

2020-09-13 Thread Doug
Chris,
I am no Gnucash or accounting x-pert, but how I perform a similar task is to
just do a total import, to ´Unspecified´.
Then I duplicate another transaction with similar splits, to the same date (so
in you case, the previous weeks transaction).
Then I manually do the split in that transaction, finishing with deleting the
original import (which was only there as a ´memory prompt´ anyway).

In my case, I use this for importing my wife´s salary, where the variations
are usually relatively minor.

Would love to know if someone does a similar task in a more efficient way.

Keep safe! (from Covid)

Re: [GNC] Ubuntu distribution version

2020-09-14 Thread Doug
Derek,
I run PCLinuxOS, & it is Gnucash ver 4.1.

I have been a happy PCLinuxOS user for about 15 years. I love PCL because it
just works.
Try it off a USB drive, or SD card.

(I run Ubuntu on my Energy server, & must say I prefer PCL! Emoncms (that I
use) is set up for Ubuntu, so too hard to change for me...)

Re: [GNC] How to treat accommodation security deposit

2020-11-22 Thread Doug
Tony,
I am no Accouintant, but the way I would attack it is to set up a cash account
for the bond (security deposit), then split the payment into bond & rental
(into another account, or as a Draw).
When the bond is returned, that credits into the bond account, hopefully
leaving it at zero balance. (hint: the account can then be hidden if you no
longer need to see it)
I also have old ´sleeper´ accounts: a hidden main account (bit obvious: a
snooze!) then drop old unused accounts into that main account.
Keep safe!

Re: [GNC] Thank you

2019-09-03 Thread Doug
Lyndon,
it has worked in Aus for many years! So long that I cannot remember the first
version I used. (One of my old loans was dated 1995 to give an idea)

I used to run a business & when GST was introduced, it was a bit of a pain,
but not impossible. Now I have retired, I use it to manage my bank accts & a
rental property.

There are some things I would like to see, but they are not a deal breaker to
me:
-Management of GST for Australia (I think A similar system runs in NZ & other
countries too).
What this requires is putting the 10% GST in a management acct, then managing
the remittance to the Tax Office.
Also being able to manage changes/mistakes.

-Yearly Tax Management, in Aust case, July 1 to Jun 30. (Prebuilt but editable
filters that exported the data for Tax to a spreadsheet that I could give to my
accountant would be great too.)

Perhaps in future releases these could be covered: There are many countries
using Value-added taxes, so a way of plugging in the rates (ie dividers), then
how it is managed would mean it would have general use.

The Yearly rollovers, & the tax management might also be covered with a rate
table.

I have had little success exporting successfully to a spreadsheet, but that is
probably my lack of skills. One advantage of the full history of the accounts
is when a property is sold: all the old figures are at your fingertips which is
much easier than the other well known commercial products (which do not easily
run on Linux anyway). I am a PCLinuxOS user, also for many years (Easy to use &
recommended too).

I also would like to thank the developers. I have seen the advancements over
the years. The program is now far more polished than the early versions. I have
had hiccups, but never lost any data in 25 years!

regards, Doug (Nth Coast, NSW, Australia, near Byron Bay. Someone has to put up
with this lifestyle: sunny one day & perfect the next!)

Re: [GNC] Thank you

2019-09-04 Thread Doug
Thanks Adrien. Every year I need to send my data to my accountant who does not
(yet) use Gnucash. I did not have any success exporting to .qif files: not sure
why. (Would not read into Quickbooks)
I thought a spreadsheet might be better way to go.

This is a new accountant because my last accountant retired (at 85! & still
runs a farm: tough people these rural folk). Previously I supplied hard copy
reports because they were old-school.
The new accountant is quite happy for electronic version, but last year I had
no success with her reading my files.
Basically, I have always prepared a report on each account for the 12 months
which detail my tax deductible transactions.
I am no accountant, & even tho I have used Gnucash for years, I still have
issues every tax year but usually bumble through.

regards, Doug

Re: [GNC] Thank you

2019-09-04 Thread Doug
Adrien,
one thing that would help in Australia is in the setup to be able to set the
year start as 1 July, & end as 30 June.
Currently the only options are the beginning of the year, monthly, quarterly,
or absolute.
I usually use absolute, resetting each year.

Re: [GNC] Australian Initial Setup Q's

2018-11-24 Thread Doug
I have been a long-term non-professional Gnucash user in Australia. I guess, I
am like you in that I felt the cost of the Quicken products was a bit
excessive. I changed to Gnucash possibly 12 years ago. The only issue I would
like to see is an ability to track Business GST, but this is no longer an issue
for me because I have retired.

My suggestion for tracking a 'Home inventory' would be either to set up an
asset for each one, or if low value, congregate them in one asset class. You
can put some information in the description so you can search for items. You
could also export the account details to a Spreadsheet, & attach photos, etc
there.

I think you should find all the accounts should move over fairly easily from
Quicken. If you need to aggregate accounts, the trick is to set up the main
account, then shift the other accounts in as sub-accounts. Then each
transaction can be moved fairly easily (At least that is the way I do it!)

I run Gnucash under Linux: I love PCLinuxOS! which I have used for many years.

regards, Doug

[GNC] "no linked account" during transaction import

2019-03-27 Thread Doug Pearson
Hello. Newbie here. I'm attempting to "Import Transactions from CSV"

Transactions are formatted as, for example:
Account Date DescriptionAmount
Expenses:Auto:Gas 1/1/2019 Shell Service 70
Expenses:Clothes1/1/2019 Ann Taylor 50
Expenses:Internet 1/1/2019 Comcast50
Expenses:Dining 1/1/2019 McDonald's 4.50

At "Import Preview" I map the Transaction.CSV" column names to GnuCash
field names directly (name = name) except "Amount" maps to "Withdrawal".

At "Match Import and GnuCash accounts" I receive "No Linked Account" for
all transactions.

I would have thought(?) that the Transactions.CSV "Account" name
corresponding exactly to the GnuCast account name would have auto-matched.
Am I wrong about that?

How do I avoid having to manually make a mapping for each and every
transaction?

Thanks!

Yes. That does work.  Although it takes a very long time to get a response from

Old dog learning new tricks comes hard: I forgot to cc the mailing list in my

omission.
Also, it occurs to me that it would be very useful if somebody who knows how to
edit the Gnucash Wiki could put a link in the Online Quotes page, Section 3
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Online_Quotes#Command_line_interface) pointing
to the Flatpak page on Using Command Line Tools
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Flatpak#Using_Command_Line_Tools) which
documents the information that Geert supplied me.

Flatpack v:5.3 install
 Thanks Geert-
This works! The whole topic of flatpack is  a complete mystery to me that I'm
not sure I have the motivation to unravel.
One small error in the code line you sent. The option keyword needs to
be preceded with a double dash as follows:
flatpak run --command=gnucash-cli org.gnucash.GnuCash --quotes dump

and dump requires some  arguements.
Thanks again.

Hi Doug,

For the flatpak edition of gnucash the command to fetch quotes is slightly more
complex:

flatpak run --command=gnucash-cli org.gnucash.GnuCash -quotes dump

This boils down to the following components:

- flatpak run org.gnucash.GnuCash

=> indicate you want to execute a command in the org.gnucash.GnuCash sandbox

without any further options, this will run the default command in that

 sandbox, which is "gnucash"

- --command=gnucash-cli

=> indicate you don't want to run the default command, but gnucash-cli

 instead

- -quotes dump

=> the arguments to pass to the command to run

Regards,

Geert

[GNC] YahooJSON hack for Linux Flatpak install

2023-07-16 Thread doug brown via gnucash-user
The hack proposed by Bruce Schuck in the thread "Yahoo Closed the Door on
Finance API" also works for Flatpak install of Gnucash v. 5.3.
This Flatpak install was the only Linux distribution of Gnucash v.5.3 I have
been able to find. Unfortunately it it uses F::Q v. 1.56 and I have been unable
to find any means of upgrading to F::Q v. 1.57.  The good news is the hack also
works on F::Q v.1.56.
Bruce's hack is:>For those comfortable with locating and editing the
YahooJSON.pm module>manually I have a quick fix. If you have F::Q v1.57 change
the lines>defining $YIND_URL_HEAD and $YIND_URL_TAIL (lines 38 and 39) to:
>my $YIND_URL_HEAD
>=>'https://query2.finance.yahoo.com/v11/finance/quoteSummary/?symbol=';>my
>$YIND_URL_TAIL = '&modules=price,summaryDetail,defaultKeyStatistics';
The Flatpak YahooJSON.pm module is located
at:var/lib/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/current/active/files/lib/perl5/site_perl/S.32.0/Finance/Quote
Elevated privileges are required to modify this file.
