[GNC] Search not working

2023-12-08 Thread Xe Roy
When I search for 19.26 I get no results even though I just entered a
transaction for that amount.
I selected NUMBER as the search criteria.
I tried NEW SEARCH and REFINE SEARCH.
I tried CONTAINS and EQUALS.
I tried ALL CRITERIA and ANY CRITERIA.
What's the trick to searching for an amount?

[GNC] Fw: Unable to add new scheduled transaction

2023-09-18 Thread Xe Roy
The bug response was to click ENTER after entering the transaction.
This solved the problem.
I didn't used to have to do that, but it's not a big deal.
I added that last step to my checklist for creating new scheduled transactions.

Nothing has changed. The third step where you create debits and credits needs
to be entered before you can create the scheduled transaction. I have gotten
this message before when the third step is not completed correctly or at all.
Since you have created these before, there must be an error as I don't think
you skipped this step.

Just re-run the reconcile with the same ending date and balance as the

Thanks.
Your advice makes sense.
Since I have already created my credit card accounts as top-level accounts and

Example: move VISA to LIABILITIES > CREDIT CARDS > VISA

Xe Roy,

Just a note that it's more common to structure your GnuCash accounts with just
five top level accounts:

Assets
Liabilities
Equity
Income
Expenses

You'd put the "Credit Cards" account under Liabilities, with each credit card
in its own account within Credit Cards, like so:

Liabilities
- Credit Cards
- - Visa
- - Mastercard

This groups the accounts in ways that make reporting clearer and easier.

Xe Roy,

You will find if you just change your top level account in the transaction, the
splits will follow it. Just as Michael described above. I've used jump but I
find it just as easy to make that one correction.

I am a newby to gnucash ... trying to switch from Quicken to gnucash.

I'll have several accounts open and I just forget to switch.
In Quicken, I just move the transaction (splits and all) to the new

The Internet chatter I've found so far lead me to believe this feature is
 missing from gnucash.
I hope that's not true because it would really cause me excessive hassle.
I hope there is a way to move a transaction (including any splits) to
 another account.

Here is an example which illustrates a typical situation:
Let's say I have two credit cards, VISA and MASTER CARD.
Each has their own top-level CREDIT CARD account in gnucash, and each has
 its own tab in gnucash.
I meant to enter a transaction in VISA but accidently entered it in MASTER
 CARD.
The transaction is for $10 with WALMART in the description.
So, the main entry shows $10 and the splits show $5 to the clothing
account and $5 to the food account.
I want to move the entire WALMART transaction, including the splits, from
the MASTER CARD top-level account to the VISA top-level account in one easy
 step.
This is easily doable in Quicken by right-clicking anywhere in the
transaction, clicking MOVE, and selecting the new account VISA.
How is this done in gnucash?

[GNC] How to move a transaction with splits from one top-level account to another - take 2

2023-01-18 Thread Xe Roy
I asked this question earlier but initial responses made me realize more detail
was necessary.

I am a newby to gnucash ... trying to switch from Quicken to gnucash.
A mistake I regularly make is to enter a transaction into the wrong account.
I'll have several accounts open and I just forget to switch.
In Quicken, I just move the transaction (splits and all) to the new account.
The Internet chatter I've found so far lead me to believe this feature is
missing from gnucash.
I hope that's not true because it would really cause me excessive hassle.
I hope there is a way to move a transaction (including any splits) to another
account.

Here is an example which illustrates a typical situation:
Let's say I have two credit cards, VISA and MASTER CARD.
Each has their own top-level CREDIT CARD account in gnucash, and each has its
own tab in gnucash.
I meant to enter a transaction in VISA but accidently entered it in MASTER CARD.
The transaction is for $10 with WALMART in the description.
So, the main entry shows $10 and the splits show $5 to the clothing account and
$5 to the food account.
I want to move the entire WALMART transaction, including the splits, from the
MASTER CARD top-level account to the VISA top-level account in one easy step.
This is easily doable in Quicken by right-clicking anywhere in the transaction,
clicking MOVE, and selecting the new account VISA.
How is this done in gnucash?

Re: [GNC] Crash on account delete

2023-01-01 Thread Xe Roy
Thanks.
I'll go with MySQL.
Is there anything I need to do to force GnuCash to use MySQL other than simply
do a SAVE AS to MySQL?

Thanks for the clarification, and good to know you are up to date.

That makes it harder to try to duplicate, and it might be important, but
'til then...

Good to know. There otherwise shouldn't have been a loss of data, except...

Usually the case after a crash, nothing out of the ordinary here,

Highly likely.

Investigate your auto-save interval in the meantime. Maybe a shorter one
will help, or else:

Make a copy of your file and do some tests.

Recreate the accounts you desired to delete.

Do a manual save.

Delete the desired account(s)

What happens?

If you reproduce the crash, that's technically a good thing, because
you've not only identified a problem, you can reproduce it so the
developers can too, and most likely fix it. (the hard to reproduce stuff
is the most difficult to fix, because it can be nearly impossible to
figure out what the cause)

If all goes as expected, then I'd chalk it up to something weird. Not
necessarily 'not a bug' but not quite yet identifiable.

Here's where one of the benefits of the various SQL backends kicks in,
as David H. mentioned : instant auto-save.

If you get a crash using one of them, you *may* only loose data pending
to be saved, not other transactions already committed. With the XML
format, you'll lose anything within the time window of your auto-save
preference.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Crash on account delete

2023-01-01 Thread Xe Roy
I have the latest version 4.13 downloaded yesterday running on Windows 11 on
AMD Ryzen 9 5950x.
I can't remember if the account I was trying to delete was the placeholder or
the subaccount.
There were no transactions in the account or the subaccount.
When I re-ran GnuCash I got the UNABLE TO OBTAIN LOCK error.
The only option that worked was to ignore the error.
The lost transactions were in other accounts.
I assume that when the program crashed, I lost everything since the last
automatic save.

First,

Welcome to GnuCash!

As with most issues, but particularly with crashes, can you provide the
version of GnuCash you are using and the Operating System?

Now, for some additional detail questions:

1. Did the account you were trying delete contain transactions? If not,
was it set as a 'placeholder' account specifically, or simply not used?

2. Did the sub-account(s) contain transactions? Were any of them
placeholders?

When you re-opened your file, what, as best you can determine, was
missing? Was it only transactions related to the affected account and
sub-accounts, or were entirely un-related transactions also missing?

-
As to the question of "is GnuCash buggy" I'd say, *all* software has
bugs. Some are known, some not.

For GnuCash, bugs that cause crashes or erroneously delete/change data
are top priority based on what I gather from how the developers react.
(that might even be official 'policy')

The steps are usually:

1. Detail the circumstances
2. Try to reliably reproduce it with a set list of steps
3. Rule out user error. (I don't think that is the case here, other than
trying to delete an account that contained sub-accounts)

-
With respect to the question of data file formats, that is simply a
personal choice based on needs outside of GnuCash. Each has their
advantages.

There is nothing inherently inferior about the default XML backend.

Additionally, all formats are treated the same by GnuCash itself. All
are loaded entirely into memory and accessed accordingly. GnuCash is not
yet a 'proper' database application.

Regards,
Adrien

[GNC] Crash on account delete

2023-01-01 Thread Xe Roy
I am a new user using GnuCash for the first time.
About an hour into adding transactions, I already crashed the program.
I was trying to delete an empty account that had a subaccount.
Then the program disappeared and I lost the last few inputs.
Is GnuCash buggy?
Should I switch from XML to one of the database formats?
