Re: [GNC] GnuCash won't open

2019-01-09 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Ruth,

Privacy settings of your browser should have no effect on the download or the
file opening, but occasionally downloads don’t complete properly and can get
corrupted. The solution is to simply re-download.

Follow these steps *carefully*:

1. Download GnuCash 3.4, using either Safari or Firefox, but **DO NOT** choose
to “open” the file when the save dialog comes up. Choose to SAVE it to your
Downloads folder.

2. Once the download is complete, open Finder and navigate to Downloads.

3. In it you will find the GnuCash download file that ends in .dmg,
double-click that file. It will open a new window with several icons. One of
these will be GnuCash.app.

4. Now, in the Finder window that is viewing your Downloads folder, navigate to
Applications. If you don’t have a shortcut to it already in the sidebar on the
left, open your Macintosh HD (or whatever your hard drive is named) from that
sidebar, and then open the Applications folder. (you may also have an icon for
your hard drive on your desktop - they open the same folder, where you’ll see
an ‘Applications’ folder)

5. Now, left-click and drag the GnuCash.app icon from the other window to the
Applications folder, this will ‘install’ GnuCash to your Mac.

6. Close the Gnucash.dmg window.

7. In the Applications folder, right-click on GnuCash.app and choose “open”.

8. You will be asked if you are sure you want to open this file that was
downloaded from the internet. Click the “open” button.

GnuCash should start, and appear in your Dock, where you can lock it there. If
it begins to start, then fails, left double-click it again and it should open
successfully that time and from there on out.

Hope that helps. If not, report back how far you got on this list and what
happened and myself or someone else will try help you sort it out.

Regards,
Adrien

Re: [GNC] GnuCash won't open

2019-01-03 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Ruth,

The first time you run GnuCash, you may need to right-click and choose “Open”,
then confirm in the pop-up dialog that you want to open the app. After that,
left double-clicking should work fine, or you can launch it from your dock like
any other app. You’ll have to repeat this right-click process each time you
install a new version.

The wiki should probably updated to reflect this. I’m headed to bed now, but
can get to it later if no one else has beat me to it.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Gnucash won't open

2018-09-23 Thread John Ralls
Ah.

Double clicking on a disk image (.dmg is Disk iMaGe) mounts it to the file
system. That’s normally accompanied by opening it in a Finder window, but
perhaps you have that turned off somehow. It’s not the .dmg that you want in
/Applications, it’s Gnucash.app (which will look like “Gnucash" if you have
“display extensions” in Finder’s View Options turned off) from inside the disk
image that you want in Applications.

Once you’ve cleaned that up you’ll need to remove the GnuCash item from your
dock and re-add it.

John Ralls

Thank you. Your suggestion (see below) for going to Applications and and adding
the prompt did work.   Below, to remind everyone, is your suggestion.
try opening Applications:Utilities:Terminal and at the prompt typing
  /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash --debug

Thanks again.

It's not clear from your description that you dragged Gnucash.app out of the
dmg folder to somewhere else (usually the main Applications folder). If you
didn't, do so.

The next thing to check is the trace file (see
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Trace_File). If there are no errors there, try
opening Applications:Utilities:Terminal and at the prompt typing
  /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash --debug

See if it displays anything to the terminal window; it will also write a much
larger trace file that might shed some light on the problem.

John Ralls

My *guess* is that the original icon you had in the launcher pointed to the
dmg folder. Then you created an icon from the program under Applications,
which did (and does) work.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash won't open

2018-09-22 Thread Alison Fox via gnucash-user
It works now.  Although I had placed Gnucash.dmg in the Application folder, it
still didn't work - I would go to open and the app icon would disappear.  That
is when I reached out to the group for advice.

Once I followed your debug advice, I opened Gnucash from the Applications
folder (through Finder) - all my files appeared.  Then I dragged a copy of the
application onto my Dock and now I can open Gnucash directly by clicking on
that icon.

I hope this explanation makes sense.    Thanks again.

So it launches from the command line but not from Finder? That's not good.
Please run Applications:Utilities:Console and select "User Reports" in the
sidebar and see if there are any reports whose name begins with "Gnucash".

Thank you. Your suggestion (see below) for going to Applications and adding the
text after the prompt did work.

try opening Applications:Utilities:Terminal and at the prompt typing
  /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash --debug

Thanks again.

It's not clear from your description that you dragged Gnucash.app out of the
dmg folder to somewhere else (usually the main Applications folder). If you
didn't, do so.

The next thing to check is the trace file (see
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Trace_File). If there are no errors there, try
opening Applications:Utilities:Terminal and at the prompt typing
  /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash --debug

See if it displays anything to the terminal window; it will also write a much
larger trace file that might shed some light on the problem.

Please remember to copy the list on all replies. The "reply all" button works
well for this.

You need to put a space between the file name and the option, i.e ".../Gnucash
--debug".

[GNC] Gnucash won't open

2018-09-22 Thread Alison Fox via gnucash-user
Hi.
Hoping someone can help me.  I am on a MacAir running MacOS High Sierra version
10.13.4
When I went to open Gnucash, it will not open.  I tried several ways, but it
says the software may not be compatible.  I downloaded the latest version.  It
downloads and I saved and open the application.  It verifies it and then asks
if I want to open it even thought from Internet.  I say yes.  It looks like the
icon is bouncing and about to open, but then it simply vanishes.
I can't get my files and I can't open the older version or the one I just
downloaded.  Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I discovered today why this is a problem on Gnucash 3.x and not on 2.6.x.
While Bob already committed a fix to prevent this from happening again, he did
not add a cure for existing bad WindowPosition values. I have just committed
that part so it should no longer happen from gnucash 3.2 onwards.

That’s one possibility. The other is that you closed GnuCash with the main
window minimized and GnuCash has set the window position to -32000;-32000. That
misfeature has been fixed for 3.2, but in the meantime you can open
AppData/Roaming/GnuCash/books/your-datafile-name.gcm in an editor (notepad will
do), find the window position line, and change the coordinates to small
positive numbers, perhaps 100;100.

The parameter you want to change is
...
[Window 1]
...
WindowPosition=-32000;-32000;
...

[GNC] Gnucash won't open?

2018-06-14 Thread Gyle McCollam
I tried opening gnucash, I have been using for over 2 years, and it tells me it
can’t get a lock. I select open anyway and it shows on the windows 10 taskbar,
show a preview when hovered over the icon, but will not open for use. I tried
shutting down the computer and restarting, but that didn’t help. What is going
on?
