Geoff, Thank you for that suggestion, That seems to have unlocked it. There are some oddities jumping from one window to the other, but I could close the second window. Hi David From your new "blank" window, use the toolbar menu and choose: View / New Accounts Page This should open the main "Chart of Accounts" page in your new window, and then you can proceed as usual. IMHO this should be the default whenever you choose Window / New Window. Hope this helps. Re: [GNC] Possible to display two account registers on
In Windows 10 (and probably all other host OSes?), if you double click on any account in the Accounts Page window (windows that opens when GNC is launched) then it will open a new floating window for that specific account (it doesn't open another for an account for which one floating window is open already in which case it will bring forward that window and focus it). Since you want to compare two different accounts, this will open up total of 3 windows - one each for two accounts and the Accounts Page initially opened one - which should allow you to easily arrange them how you like them and then compare them. You can have many accounts open by this floating windows fashion to, for example, comparer n accounts at the same time if you want. -- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2022 14:21:32 -0800 From: Stan Brown mailto:the_stan_br...@fastmail.fm> > To: gnucash-user@gnucash.org <mailto:gnucash-user@gnucash.org> Subject: Re: [GNC] Possible to display two account registers on screen? And you don't have to open the data file twice. Bring up one of the two registers, then click Window ? New Window with Page. That register will be moved to a "floating" window separate from the main GC window. Then you can bring up the other register in the main GC window. Re: [GNC] Possible to display two account registers on screen?
I did this sort of migration (from Quicken) many moons ago and my recommendation is to perform reimport with slight modification in in the process. First delete the second account and all transactions that are in the second account. You can do so in bulk by deleting the account and while deleting the account it will prompt you what do you want to do with the existing transactions in that account, which is to delete them. After deleting transactions and the account, re-import them again. Now if it finds same transactions, it should display matched transactions and then confirm, and if not it will create them in the existing account as you will get a chance to specify what you want to do with them during the import. At this step you can be choosy and select which transactions to import (and reconcile), if you want to. As I mentioned before, you can delete an account and during deleting an account, it gives you option to move those transactions to another account as well or delete them outright so you can move them into one account and then delete what appears to be duplicate transactions. Make sure you make backup copy of the existing file to revert to in case you don't like result of what the new outcome looks like in that modified re-import process and want to rollback. -- Message: 7 Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2022 17:02:22 -0500 From: Art Chimes mailto:artsonl...@gmail.com> > To: Gnucash Users mailto:gnucash-user@gnucash.org> > Subject: [GNC] Possible to display two account registers on screen? Re: [GNC] Possible to display two account registers on screen?
Thanks to Stan, Dan, and Liz for the suggestions. I'm going to play around with these tomorrow, but I have to say that I always like to find "lesser-known features," so I'll probably try Stan's first. I failed to specify my OS (Window 10) and GnuCash version (4.9), for which I apologize. I'm assuming that Liz is suggesting that I open the *.gnucash file (open with > gnucash) to get the second instance of the program running. Let me know if that's not right. Use the options under the Windows menu. Hi, Art! One of GnuCash's lesser-known features makes it easy to do what you want. And you don't have to open the data file twice. Bring up one of the two registers, then click Window » New Window with Page. That register will be moved to a "floating" window separate from the main GC window. Then you can bring up the other register in the main GC window. You can edit either register, but don't try to edit one register while there's an incomplete transaction in the other register. -- Stan Brown Tehachapi, CA, USA https://BrownMath.com ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user If you are using Nabble or Gmane, please see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists for more information. - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Re: [GNC] Possible to display two account registers on screen?
If the only thing in the second account is your messed up import, you can delete that account and have it put the transactions in the original account. Then remove the duplicates. It will simplify matters and speed up the process if I can see both accounts side by side. I know I can print up a transaction report, and use that as a reference, but is it possible to display the two accounts — GnuFund GNUFX and GnuFund GNUCX — on screen? If not, is it a feature GnuCash should have or is it just me? Thank you You can open multiple copies of a file. You will get a warning dialogue. At that point, choose "read only" for the second one. Then you are reasonably safe, read from one, edit the other.
