[Goanet] Cooling down in the summer
One new trend in Goa of late is to have (despite the water shortages) summer swimming classes. These are organised both for children and adults, largely in the many hotels that have cropped up and need to keep their facilities non-vacant in Goa's considerably long off-season, for economic reasons. Angels, along Porvorim's CHOGM Road, just finished one batch today. The next batch starts on May 7. Classes are held each morning, roughly between 7 to 10 am, depending on the response, and in the evenings, between 4 to 6.30 pm. Charges for the one-hour-daily training for 15 days is Rs 600 for children and Rs 900 for teenagers and adults. Mr Mahale has been a patient and good-humoured instructor with us over the past fortnight. Details: Tel 412 403 or 414 784 or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: www.angelsgoa.com Other hotels in the Porvorim area and elsewhere also hold such courses. The Government-run Campal swimming pool works out cheaper for long-term memberships specially. But there are some typically bureaucratic requirements before one dips in (photographs, doctor's certificate...) --FN PS: I don't have any commercial interest in the above, and didn't get a discount on the fees chargeable. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet === For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails? [Goanet] Calangute news - Bruno weds Nina
Calangute soccer hero Bruno weds Nina * Joaquim Fernandes Soccer fans in the Europe are probably conversant with the phrase, 'Bend it like Bechkam'. We in Goa are more familiar with 'Blast it like Bruno.' Well, Bruno Coutinho from Umtavaddo, Calangute, the star forward of Goa's Salgoacar Sports Club and an Indian soccer icon for more then a decade finally tied the knot with long-time sweetheart, Nina Dias, from Mazalvaddo, Anjuna, on April 21. The nuptial mass was held at 5.45 p.m. at the St Alex Church, Calangute and celebrated by 'padr vigar' Fr Luciano Fernandes. The reception was held at the Severina Gardens, Mapusa. Bruno refused to have the traditional toast raising ceremony. He says everyone knows him and hardly anyone knows his bride. So while the toast master praises him to hight heavens, his bride, getting hardly any mention, will feel marginalised. So thoughtful of Bruno. The MC was Jerry Pinto from the Taj Hotels and The Big Country Band had the crowd grooving with some scintillating music. I met Bruno at his plush new bungalow at Umtavaddo, Calangute today morning. (May 4). Sipping the chilled soft drink he offered me in his gleaming sitting room I ask him the old question. So how is married life treating you? He gives me the gimlet eye, smiles and ''By the grace of God, everything is fine. I've had a busy season and did not even get time to distribute the wedding invitation cards properly. I am relaxing now.'' For the record, Bruno started his proffesional career with Dempo Engineering in 1987- 1988. He joined Salgaocar Sports Club in 1989 and has been the club's prolific scorer since then except for 1year (1991) which he played for Dempo Sports Club. He captained the India soccer team over a period of time. 1997 he captained the pre-Olympic team in the Nehru Gold Cup. Under his captaincy, India won 2 trophies; SAF Games, Chennai (1995) and SAF Coca Cola Cup, Goa (1999). Can he tell us some high points of his career? At the National leval, it was winning the Federation Cup for Salgaocar by beating East Bengal 2-1 in Calcutta. Bruno scored both goals. But what is his Golden moment? He has 2. First, India winning the Gold medal after 8-9 years in Chennai.Second, meeting Nina! Naturally! Here's wishing the newly married couple, a long and happy married life. Cheers! [Goanet] Congress faces resistance to Goa poll alliance with NCP
DECCAN HERALD Saturday, May 4, 2002 -- Cong faces resistance to Goa poll alliance with NCP Parrikar says Cong its own worst enemy Devika Sequeira DH News Service PANAJI, May 3 Plans for a seats adjustment between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Goa has met with stiff resistance from the majority of Congress leaders and workers here, who have given the proposal an outright thumbs down. The NCP had officially asked for 15 seats (out of 40) from the alliance, though sources in the party said they were willing to settle for 10. But Congress' pradesh Election Committee (PEC) members said that most of it= s leaders and workers felt the Congress being in a far superior position, stood to gain little from the adjustment. That apart, by and large, the leaders and workers felt that the degree of distrust between the two partie= s was such, that the NCP could not be trusted to pull out its unofficial candidates from Congress strongholds, a PEC member said. The issue is now to be resolved by the party's central leadership, sources said. A heated PEC meeting here last night attended by AICC secretary Ramesh Chennithala, also failed to finalise the list of Congress candidates or resolve the contentious issue of denying party tickets to defectors. Over a dozen defectors have once again emerged as strong contenders for Congress tickets. Mr Chennithala, PEC chairman Luizinho Faleiro and PCC president Nirmala Sawant who left for Delhi to discuss the matter with with AICC president Sonia Gandhi, are expected to return with a final list by Monday, the day when filing of nominations begins for the May 30 poll. The BJP's Central Election Committee too will meet tonight in the presence of Prime Minister A B Vajpyee to finalise candidates and discuss the party'= s Goa strategy, according to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Mr Parrikar, who denied that he was financing the United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP), which is the Congress' main opposition in Catholic-dominated constituencies, said the Congress was its own worst enemy. The BJP chief minister was referring to recent erruptions of Congress factional feuds in South Goa constituencies like Navelim, Benaulim and Curtorim, which have consistently returned Congress leaders like Luizinho Faleiro, Churchill Alemao and Francisco Sardinha. Mr Sardinha, in particular, has been the target of protests from Congress district and block committees in his constituency who are opposed to his candidature for his 1999 defection from the party. --- =A9 Copyright, 1999 The Printers (Mysore)Ltd. More than 100 jubilant citizens from Colvale and Maddel, Tivim, gathered at the open space off National Highway 17, near Carraswado, and watched a hapless contractor, Ahmed Rizwan, re-load the industrial waste into his truck. The waste included fibre glass strands, glass fibre strands used in pressure vessels, roving, certain types of clay, colour pellets, resin with and without pigment, pultrusion rods, fibre reinforced plastic pipes and other material. Citizens in the area had feared that the toxic fumes and chemical dust caused by the illegal dumping and burning of this hazardous industrial waste may adversely affect their health in the long run. Citizens present at the site said that the contractor was nervous at the sight of the large crowd, but proceeded with the waste removal after being assured that he would not be harmed. Among the crowd were children carrying banners that read, we want to live, Save Goa and Make the world a better place. While he has promised the citizens to clear the land of all waste and even to gather the ashes of the burnt material, the citizens have vowed to supervise and ensure that he fulfils his promises. Against the backdrop of illegal dumping of garbage elsewhere in Goa, the Colvale case sets a good precedent for citizens. But the victory did not come easy. Colvale residents, under the banner of the Colvale Jagrut Manch, filed complaints with police and other authorities. On their insistent prodding, the Colvale Panchayat and the Colvale Communidade also filed separate complaints with authorities. It is learnt that residents of Maddel, Tivim, led by panch member Mr Arjun Aroskar and Mr Douglas, also contributed to these efforts. Not happy with the slow pace of action from authorities, a delegation of Colvale Jagrut Manch met the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar on April 25 and handed him a memorandum seeking his intercession. The Bardez Mamlatdar's order was quick to follow. Following a report from Mapusa police, the Mamlatdar issued an order dated April 29, to restrain the respondents from dumping the waste materials and hereby order to remove the waste materials and restore the land to its original position within 15 days. Mr Shetye's order named 9 respondents; Pentair Water India Private Limited (Verna), GKB Ophthalmics Limited, GKB Hitech Lenses Limited, Phil Corporation Private Limited, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, Blossom Pharmaceuticals, all of Carraswaddo, Goa Glass Fibre Limited (Colvale), GKB Vision (Pilerne) and the contractor, Ahmed Rizwan from Carraswaddo. Though Rizwan has now cleared the Colvale land of the hazardous industrial waste, he has not specified at what location he is taking it. I am taking it where it belongs, the contractor reportedly told the assembled citizens. Members of the Colvale Jagrut Manch said they would inspect the place after it is restored to its original condition. - - THE NAVHIND TIMES 3/5/02 Page 3 - - === GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -

[Goanet] Gabru's Gift - A Mothers' Day story from Goa
Excerpt from Goem Mhojem Bhangar by Pundalik Asnodkar Freely adapted from the original Konkani by Cecil Pinto - 12th May 2002 - 7.45 p.m. - Siolim, Goa. - Zelia coughed dramatically for effect. It was just a slight cold but Zelia liked to put on a pretense of being seriously ill whenever anyone phoned or visited. At the age of seventy two, with five grandchildren, she felt she had earned the right to put up an appearance of being more sick than she actually was. Her eldest son Daniel was phoning from Canada. He phoned every month to find out how things were. Daniel baba, you know what day it is today? asked Zelia with an affected hoarseness in her voice. Twelfth of May, Mai. Why anything special today? Baba, today is Mother's Day! Oh yes. Happy Mothers' Day Mai. I did'nt know it was such a big thing in Goa. Here in Canada it is a big event. You did receive the Mothers' Day card we sent you though? Card? What card? Doris had picked up this beautiful card for you and all of us signed it and Ryan and Stacy drew cute little cartoons for their Grandma But, Baba I did'nt receive any card from you. Must be stuck in the post somewhere. Your sister Linda sent one from Australia though. When is she going to have any children, that sister of yours. Does'nt she want to be a mother too? She's nearly thirty five. What is she waiting for? Mai, Mai, we've been through this before. Let Linda take her time. It is her decision to make and we should not push her. You modern generation with all your modern ideas. What's the point in getting married at all. Huh?. Mai... Baba, talking about marriage, your brother Gabriel is finally seriously giving marriage a thought. I have spread the word around here. Working in Kuwait for 8 years now I am sure we will get some good proposals. When did Gabru last phone you Mai? Just a few minutes back Daniel Baba. Called to wish me and ask if the flowers had arrived Flowers? What flowers are you talking about Mai? Oh! You don't know? A Maruti van came today morning and this smart young man got out and asked me if I was Zelia D'Costa. Then from the van he gave me a nice tall vase with beautiful fresh flowers, and a beautiful cake from A Pasteleria, and a gift wrapped box. Said that our Gabru had ordered this for me from Kuwait via e-mail! What was in the gift wrapped box Mai? There was this lovely fine china plate with it's own wooden stand. On the plate was printed 'Thank you for being The Best Mother in the World - Mothers Day, May 12th 2002'. I have put the plate in the showcase, in the centre, and I can see it right now as I speak to you. Oh! That Gabru! He always knows how to do things in style. Oh my Gabru. My favourite son Mai! I thought I was your favourite son. And was'nt my family photo that I sent you from Canada in the centre of the showcase? No longer Daniel Baba. From now on Gabru's Mothers' Day plate will occupy that place. Theresina Aunty from next door had come and she was green with envy on seeing the flowers and cake. And when she saw the plate she just walked out without a word. Ha! What did her son send her from Kenya? A cheque maybe. No heart they have. Ha! Now see my Gabru Mai... = Greet your loved ones in Goa with flowers! http://www.goa-world.net/expressions/ EXPRESSIONS - The Flower Shop World famous all over Goa! [Goanet] Nairobi: Dr. Ribeiro Goan School /Parklands School ex-students
I have been asked to publicise the information below. Please forward this message to anyone you know who is likely to be affected. Thanks, Eddie Fernandes From Mr. Z. Malik of the Dr. Ribeiro Goan School Ex-Students. P O Box 40713, Nairobi, Kenya. Fax 332796 e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Ex Student Re: Parklands Secondary School Nairobi (Formerly Dr. Ribeiro Goan School) I am writing to you in regard to our old school and to the suggestion that the Parklands School reverts the name bearing Dr. Ribeiro's name. There is the desire on the part of members of the Board to revert to the previous name. This desire corresponds to the aim of giving due credit in general to the initial owners/sponsors and managers of the school, (i.e. the Goan Overseas Association); and in particular to the major donor the late Dr. A.R. Ribeiro. I would be grateful if you could kindly consult members of your club or society, members of the Goan Community and especially former students of the above school. Please send your proposals for a name to me. Please note that the final decision regarding the change of name will be made by the Ministry of Education. Also, kindly note that there is a decree prohibiting the use of tribal or community names for educational or social institutions. In adition the change of name will not imply any change in the current ownership, sponsorship nor management of the school. The best possible suggestion for the name is that the school be named Dr. Ribeiro Secondary School. I would like you to circulate this letter to as many of the ex-students worldwide as you are aware of with a request for all written proposals to be sent to me by or before 31st May 2002, so that I can place the matter before the next meeting of the Board of Governors sometimes in the second half of June. [Goanet] Goa's NRI Facilitation Centre
Headline: NRIs expect something real from facilitation centre Source Navhind Times Sunday 5 May 2002 at: http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=newsStory_ID=05058session_ID=6983fab71c44ab87e97f799eb1ea2a2e By A Staff Reporter PANAJI, May 4: Setting-up of a NRI Goa Facilitation Centre by the present Goa government has met with a mixed response, with Goan NRIs seeking genuine concrete decisions arising from this cell instead of mere assurances on paper. The NRI Goa Facilitation Centre was established by the present government on August 15, 2001, with a view to strengthening the cultural roots of Goans residing or working abroad and mobilising their resources and talents for the development of the state. The NRI Goa cell in its recent meeting on Thursday, May 2, at the EDC House, Panaji received the following suggestions from the twenty odd NRIs attending the meet. The compilation of a Directory of NRI Goans residing or working in the Gulf and Western countries and the vigorous expansion of a membership drive to include NRI Goans through the help of Goan associations abroad. The services of talented NRI Goan professionals in the fields of medicine, engineering, architecture, etc could be utilised for the development and progress of the state when these professionals decide to settle down in their homeland. Besides, schemes of providing insurance cover, housing plots through the Housing Corporation to the NRI Goan members and their families are being deliberated upon, informed the NRI Goa Facilitation Centre chairperson, Mr Chandrakant Keni. The NRI Goa cell has also proposed certain projects it intends to implement with the aid of the government and various Goan associations abroad, like the establishment of an Old Aged Hospice, a working womens hostel and a Hospital. While such beneficial schemes and projects are welcomed by the NRI Goans, they criticise the lack of implementation of these schemes/projects in the interest of the Goans residing/working abroad and their families. Mr Aires Rodrigues, a former NRI returned to his roots, said that such schemes or projects remain merely on paper with lack of implementation by the government. He strongly denounced all the governments who headed the state, (including the present) of simply boasting of their achievements but not initiating any action in the genuine interest of the community. = I do wonder at the optimism of being able to compile a Directory of Overseas Goans. A couple of years ago I was involved in such a project to produce a Directory of UK Goans. It was decided to launch the scheme at the UK Goan Festival, which is attended by about 3,000 Goans. 1,000 forms were printed asking for brief details of each person and handed by winsome young lasses to those arriving. A travel firm offered free two weeks holiday accommodation in Goa for the winner of the free prize draw. The MC at the event continually cajoled those attending to fill in the forms. At the end of the day, the total number of completed forms handed in was nil :-( Eddie Fernandes =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet === For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails?
