New edition of Fish Curry and Rice to be released on June 5th,
World Environment Day

The fourth, revised and updated edition of Fish, Curry and Rice will be
released on 5th June, World Environment Day by Dr.A.G. Untawale.

The new edition, which is more than 380 pages and profusely illustrated
with photographs and drawings, will be available at all bookshops from 5th
June itself.

A large number of environmentalists have contributed specific articles and
photographs for the book which is designed as a sourcebook on Goa, its
ecology and lifestyle.

The large volume contains detailed scientific information on all aspects of
Goan ecology, including the major ecological zones of the Western Ghats,
the plateau regions, coastal areas including the estuaries. There are
individual chapters on fishing, tourism, mining, landuse, infrastructure
projects and public health. A special new chapter has been added providing
details of all environmental laws, environment judgements, PILs and
information on NGOs in Goa working on such issues.

Fish, Curry and Rice has been the standard reference book on Goa's
environment issues for nearly a decade though copies were unavailable for
the past two years after the third edition went out of print.

In addition to bookshops in Goa, the book can also be ordered via the
Internet from goacom.com/books and from the Other India Bookstore in Mapusa.

Victory long over due for Mathany Saldanha.
-
---
For United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) leader, Mathany Saldanha,
his victory in an Assembly poll has come after 27 years of social work.

In fact, Election 2002 was his eight one in the last over two decades.
This time, however, he defeated three-time MLA, Mauvin Godinho from Cortalim.
I expected this victory long ago. It has come after 27 years of hard
work, he said.

For two other winning candidates Vijay Khot and Rajendra Arlekar,
both from the BJP, their victory came as a sweet revenge for their 1999
defeats.
Vijay Khot, who had lost to Sanjay Bandekar in the last elections
defeated him by a confortable margin this time.

The same was the case with Mr Arlekar, who defeated NCP's Jose Philip D'Souza.
The victory of Congress' Karl Vaz avenged the defeat his father, John
Manuel Vaz
suffered at the hands of Sheikh Hassan in the last elections.

PRIME PORTFOLIOS FOR COALITION PARTNERS: The four ministers of coalition
partnersMGP and UGDPbagged prime portfolios after their allocation by Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. At the outset, each minister has been
allotted one major portfolio and the second phase of allocation will take
place after about eight days, according to Parrikar. The third phase, if
any, will be done after 14 June 2002. It is learn that personal aptitude,
educational background and individual knack of each minister has been taken
into consideration before allocating various portfolios. (GT)

CONGRESS ANALYSING DEFEAT: Congress spokesman John Fernandes said the
Congress Party had managed to secure 38 per cent of the mandate as compared

2002-06-05 Thread Siqueira, Allwyn.

Dear Pat,

The reason that I never posted much on the GoaNet is because I found that my
messages kept bouncing back. and in any case, there was nothing that was
terribly important that required posting and I doubt whether my menial views
or points of opinion would make a vast difference to the debated topics.

However, thanks to Viviana, I am now able to post on this forum, but I still
doubt whether my participation will be one that is extremely active.

I have been receiving the digests for many years now and most of the posts
have been heated debates that I prefer to stay clear off. However, in this
current instance, I feel injustice has been done to Cecil and personally I
can't see any damage done by Cecil. Of all the posts (including the plethora
of repeated joke emails) over the years, I've immensely enjoyed Cecil's
creativity in creating very humourous postings Definitely creative,
highly commendable and original pieces of work if you ask me !!!

So have no fear Pat, thanks to Viviana, this person (me) will be able to
post on this forum if required to do so !

Best wishes,

[Goanet] Great new discovery

2002-06-05 Thread J. Almeida

Friends,

This great new discovery is believed to have
originated in Australia. Of course, it could never
exist in our beloved Goa.

Regards,

Joel Almeida

--

A major research institution has recently announced
the discovery of the
heaviest element yet known to science. This new
element has been
tentatively named Administratium.
Administratium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons,
75 deputy neutrons, and
111 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic
mass of 312. These 312
particles are held together by a force called morons,
which are surrounded
by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called
peons. Since
Administratium has no electrons, it is inert. However,
it can be detected
as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into
contact. A minute
amount of Administratium causes one reaction to take
over 4 days to complete when it would normally take
less than one second.
Administratium has a normal half-life of 3 years; it
does not decay but
instead, undergoes a reorganization, in which a
portion of the assistant
neutrons and deputy neutrons and assistant deputy
neutrons exchange places.
In fact, Administratium's mass will actually increase
over time, since each
reorganization causes some morons to become neutrons,
forming isodopes.
This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some
scientists to speculate
that Administratium is formed whenever morons reach a
certain quantity in
concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred
to as Critical
Morass. You will know it when you see it

Christian rights activist slain by lethal injection

By Robin Fernandez

KARACHI: The macabre murder of a Christian human rights campaigner has sent a
shockwave through the Christian community here amid mounting fears that his slaying
was part of a deadly terrorist plot.

The body of Ivan Edwin, a former chairman of the church-sponsored Idara-e-Amn-o-Insaf
(Justice and Peace Commission), was found strapped to a chair in his office on May 22.
Police investigators did not reveal the cause of his death to anyone but his family
members, who were informed that the killers administered him a lethal injection.

A senior Idara official, Zafar Iqbal, said on Tuesday that Edwin's slaying was
shocking for the whole community as it marked the first time that a Christian
professional had been targetted by terrorists.

Masked gunmen have killed more than a dozen Shia doctors, businessmen and real estate
developers in the city since early January in what is seen by officials as a
systematic terror plot. With the murder of a prominent Christian rights activist, the
plot appears to have thickened, said Faiz Siddiqui, a member of the Hyderabad chapter
of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

The use of a lethal injection in Edwin's murder has also attracted attention, because
terrorist groups had thus far not shown any proclivity towards biochemical weapons.
Police were therefore unwilling to publicise the fact that terrorists had possibly
upgraded their warfare capability, for fear of fuelling widespread panic attacks and
rubber-stamping their own incompetence in counter-terrorism. They (the police) are
probably hoping against hope that Ivan Edwin's murder was a routine affair that
resulted from a random act of violence, said a local charity worker, defying
policemen to find a single person who bore a grudge against the altruistic victim.

Edwin, who also ran a small auto-parts shop, was a popular figure in his serene
P.E.C.H.S neighbourhood. Known as a chirpy pacificist and generous soul,Edwin spared
both time and effort for others. His neighbours were as distraught as his family and
work colleagues at the murder.Like other sympathisers who saw the unfairness of it
all, Sister Barbara Anne, agonised over the possible motives for his death. We are
living in...an age of terror. Every act of terrorism sends us a signal geared towards
a specific objective. It could be a deep-rooted emotion! In the case of Mr Edwin Ivan
what could it? Rivalry, jealousy, animosity? she wondered.

The death of the 46-year-old Christian activist went unreported in the national press
and the ackowledgement notice issued by his family some days after his burial carried
no hint of the horrible end he met.

According to Edwin's wife, Sarah, the first sign of danger flashed before her eyes when
her husband did not answer his cell-phone for the couple's customary afternoon chat.
But her calls to him and each of his hang-outs became more frantic when Edwin did not
pick their daughter from her tuition center at 5:00 p.m. The wall of silence between
them now kept on growing. At 8.00 p.m. when a police official summoned her to hospital
for an identification the wall of silence had turned into an abyss of grief.

Edwin served on the staff of Idara for 16 years and during this period he occupied key
posts in the organisation, though at the time of his death he was an ordinary member.

He is survived by his wife and three young daughters.

[Goanet] ChristianYouth (News from Pakistan)

2002-06-05 Thread Robin

TAJOKE VILLAGE, Pakistan: A Christian group has launched an appeal to
non-governmental organisations to depute an army of animators across
rural towns and villages. The step will ensure that the maximum number of
Christians get organized for the benefit of their communities, according
to a spokesperson for the Young Soldiers of Christ -- a designated
development committee.

Most Christians here desire to do something for others, said the spokesperson, but
their efforts remain hamstrung by the perpetual lack of guidance. We need to raise an
army of animators to assist our community members, especially those living in rural
areas, she said.

Drawing upon the successful experience of her native village, Young Soldier Nighat
Masih said that since the visit of a Caritas animator in January 2000 Tajoke village
had been transformed. We have begun to work in harmony for the development of our
village, she said.

At first the Caritas animator, B.M. Shahid, encouraged us to initiate a thorough
survey of our village and its inhabitants, Nighat reminsced. The survey was useful,
because it helped Young Soldiers to construct a true image of their community. Data
relating to the population and infrastructure of the village allowed them to see their
problems in a different light.

Tajoke may have had primary schools, roads, electricity, and water-pumps but the list
of unavailable amenities was longer. Within months the Young Soldiers was able to map
out a development agenda for their village. The supply of gas and running water as
well as the contruction of a church became priorities for the community. In the near
future Tajoke will form a cooperative, with an eye to boost their village economy.

Caritas Pakistan regularly holds training workshops for local development committees.
The purpose of the training is to impart committee members skills in community
mangement, so that they may be competent enough to deal with their own affairs.
