   About Us

Family Care is a full-time Charity working tirelessly to provide love,
encouragement and support to the poor and needy in society. Each of
our volunteers believe that real happiness comes not in one's selfish
pursuit for their "own" desires, but in reaching out and helping those
in need; for as a boomerang it comes right back to you. As a result we
have left behind our "old" secular lifestyles, and have embraced a new
one, wherein loving God and fellowman takes number one priority.

As a few examples, Lilly , a kindergarten teacher from Finland, after
watching some heart-touching videos about the poverty in India in
1983, decided that she could make a difference by investing her life
and talents among the poor children here. During her last seventeen
years she has helped raise the physical standard in several orphanages
and handicapped institutions in the country, by raising support for
them from back home (Finland), as well as approaching local
businessmen and companies to donate everything from drinking water
facilities to educational material and clothes for the children. She
has taught at handicapped institutions in different major cities, and
together with her husband and other fellow workers have set up clubs
for the deaf all over India.

Joaquim Barretto, once a top student from Bombay, being touched by the
plight of the HIV positive people has been doing his bit to make a
difference in their lives. He conducts regular sessions for them,
where staying positive and fighting the sickness "together", is
emphasised. He is now helping fund-raise for a little hospice in Goa,
where Aids victims can be well taken care of during the terminal stage
   of their illness.

Where we draw our inspiration from: The inspiration for our work,
comes largely through the teachings of the Bible, and writings of
other great world-changers like Dr. David Livingstone, St Francis of
Assisi and Hellen Keller who believed that God Spirit rests in the
hearts of man, and and He uses us as His instruments to show the world
how much He loves and cares about us.

My life shall touch a dozen lives
   Before this day is done,
Leave countless marks for good or ill
   Ere sets the evening sun.
So this the wish I always wish,
   The prayer I always pray:
Let my life help the other lives
   It touches by the way.

We believe that everyone can "make a difference" no matter how big or
small you are. All you need is a kind heart, a warm smile and a
willingness to make others happy. If you have these three ingredients
you are cut out to be a "world changer"!

Of the many amusing explanations given by swamijis and other vedic

1. Humans tell lies in 108 different ways.

2. There are 108 different kinds of delusions.

3. Humans are afflicted with 108 forms of ignorance.

[Goanet]Daman Bridge

2003-08-29 Thread Constantino Xavier
Hello,

Terrible accident in Daman. There are different versions circulating through
the news agencies. Most say the bridge is of portuguese construction and was
last time repared some 22 years back, though it has been in terrible
conditions for a long time before todays collapsing. Others say the bridge
was built in 1983. Does someone know more on this bridge origins?

There are many damanese living in Portugal: Any possibilty of knowing the
names of the victims?

Twenty-Two Children Die as Indian Bridge Crumbles
Thu August 28, 2003 01:52 PM ET
AHMEDABAD, India (Reuters) - At least 22 children were killed and 20 others
were feared dead after a road bridge across an inlet in western India
collapsed on Thursday, sending vehicles plummeting into the water.
"So far 24 dead bodies have been recovered and 22 of them are children,"
Gyanendra Srivastava, the administrator of Daman district, about 125 miles
from Bombay, told Reuters by telephone.

He said local residents had reported that about 20 children, who had to
cross the bridge on their way home from school, were still missing.

Officials said a school bus and other vehicles carrying children were among
several vehicles that plunged into the water when the bridge collapsed.

Hundreds of people gathered at the scene in the evening and shouted slogans
blaming the authorities for the collapse of the dilapidated structure,
witnesses said.

"We will not spare the administration. We have been complaining repeatedly
about the bridge, but nobody heard us. Now we have lost our children," local
resident Umesh Patel told Reuters by telephone.

Motorcyclist Salim Anwar, 20, said he had been about to go on to the bridge
when it collapsed.

"I heard a loud crack and saw people rushing toward me screaming 'the bridge
is falling'," he said.

"I could hear cries of 'help, help' and I saw these rickshaws and the bus
falling into the water. It was a terrible scene."

Daman's mayor, Vishal Tandel, said a 10-year old boy was pulled out alive
two hours after the incident.

This is the latest tragedy to hit India in four days. On Monday, bombs
planted in taxis killed 51 people in the country's financial capital Bombay,
and on Wednesday stampeding pilgrims trampled at least 33 people to death at
a Hindu festival in Western India.

[Goanet]RE: Who is a Goan?

2003-08-29 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
RE: Who is a Goan?

Dr. Eric Pinto writes:
If he is the Ashley Tellis who went to St. Xavier's School in the 60's,
then he is the brother of Viv Tellis the Dentist, and a nephew of the
venerable Dr. Stanley Patrao, the man who delivered half of south
Bombay's Goan babies: only they were dear Mangalorian friends of our
family!! Ashley was younger than me, his brother Winston was older.
AShley taught for several years at the Jesuit run Fairfield University
in Connecticut.

Response:
Dr. Eric Pinto the resident Goan Historian of New York City makes a very
good point about Ashley Tellis. As his post shows he is also a historian
of everything related to Goa in Bombay /Mumbai.

Living in Goa and perhaps Bombay, our view of Goans was perhaps tunneled
in our small vision of the world. However now the concept of an Indian
and Global Goan Diaspora community is well established. The question
arises how far back does one go before one is excluded as being a Goan
i.e. when is one denied of their Goan roots? Many (proud Goans) may
respond never.

If that is the case, unrelated to Ashley Tellis, are Catholic
Mangloreans to be classified as non-Goans or are they one of the early
Goan Diaspora? There is much evidence that the Roman Catholic community
in Mangalore started with the immigration of six Goan families to that
part of Konkan.
Regards, GL

[Goanet]Old timers...

2003-08-29 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
ONCE IN A WAY, people drop out of your life, the same way they got to know
you in the first place. With the Internet, this is something that happens
particularly routinely.

When Olav Innocent Menezes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
rang me up the other day, he might have been taught that
I was flattering him. In fact, one told him that one had
been thinking of him just a couple of days earlier.
And indeed this was true; he was one of those mentioned
in the Dr Alberto Gomes article on Goanet, which one had to
key-in, since there was no electronic version available.

Olav was one of the active Goanetters (and, indeed,
active on the other Goa-linked cyber-networks too).
He mentioned that he was 'keeping away from it all'
for awhile, but would be getting back. Looking forward
to his return. As he asked: "Are the 'dhirios'
(bullfights) still on (on the Net)?"

Jaime DeMello was an old schoolmate, who reconnected after many years,
thanks to Goanet. The talented Moidekar has been into IT, and has a range
of other interests -- whether it is teaching Konkani via the Net (think
this is on goa-world.net), helping to set up a Moira village
webpage (wasn't it on goacom.com's communities section), learning Spanish,
and teaching dance.

After a long gap, Jaime e-encountered us, and then showed up in real
life. Here's wishing him all the best in his plans in Goa; we do need more
of you talented, enthusiastic and well-intentioned guys around. Goa, after
all, deserves to be more than just a retirement destination for the
diaspora!

Stay in touch, please. FN

[Goanet]ALERT:Goans abroad 2.5% of Salcete’s population may not get voter’s ID cards

2.5% of Salcete's population may not get voter's ID cards
--
Nearly 2.5 per cent of Salcete's voting population may not
be covered under voters identity card scheme. This was realised
during the recently held meeting of electoral officers with Chief Election
Officer, Mr B S Bhalla.
During the survey conducted by the government officials it was revealed
that nearly 2.5 per cent of voting population from Salcete stays abroad.
The officials including South Goa Collector, Mr J B Singh, additonal
collectors, Mr G P Naik and Mr Narayan Sawant, deputy collector
Mr Deepak Dessai reviewed the voters' identity card drive.
It may be recalled that Election Commission (EC) has given a deadline
of September, this year, for the state to cover 85 per cent of voting
population with voters' identity cards.
Interestingly, under immense pressures to meet the deadline the
district administration has undertaken house-to-house awareness drive
besides holding panchayat level meetings.
It is also learnt that the officials so far were able to cover only 68 per cent
of population which is much less than the target. The officials however
are optismistic that they would achieve the target after deleting the
surplus names of voters listed.
According to these officials there are around 2000 people from Margao
constituency who have migrated to other region. Similiarly the names
of 1000 voters from Curtorim and 1400 from Navelim would be deleted
following their shifting. And this would help to raise the percentage of
people covered under voters identity cards.
"We have a permanent centre in Margao which is open throughout
for any voter to drop in and get his voter identity card," stated an official.

Heres what the *neocolonists* have achieved--In 1961, the literacy
rate in Goa was 31%, infant mortality was 70 per thousand, birth rate
33 per thousand. Today literacy is 86%, infant mortality 11 per
thousand, birth rate 15 per thousand. Believe it or not, life
expectancy in Goa is 75 years, while Portugal it is 76 years. Other
indicators are not comparible, however. Collaco states that Goans
visiting Portugal will feel Shock and Awe! Having travelled widely

so many questions: if the bridge was in terrible

who is responsible for this tragedy?
so many responsible officers in Daman, what have they

or is it going to be another eyewash/brainwash to all

scapegoats to cover up for the actual culprits.

[Goanet]Panchayat Director's new directions will tackle mischief by villagebodies

2003-08-29 Thread Goa Desc
--
Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660
Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Press clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/
---
-
Panchayat director lauded for 'clipping' wings of VPs
-
The Panchayat Raj Cell of Peaceful Society, Kundaim,
has felt thatthe directions to panchayats on 'minutes of meetings'
and 'special grants utilisation guidelines' would put an end to
mischiefs by the members of the village body.In a press note
issued here it said that the Society welcomed the directions
issued to panchayats by the Director of Panchayats on 'minutes
of meetings' and 'special grants utilisation guidelines'.
These directions will be widely appreciated by the public who
are being cheated and deprived of development in their wards
for political considerations, states the press note.
Even after the gram sabha members present their proposed
resolutions in writing they are cleverly manipulated by the secretary
when writing them in the minutes register, it states.
Further it says that there are four other areas which need immediate
attention and directions to curb on-going irregularities, viz the details
of matters to be placed before the forthnightly meetings and gram
sabha meetings should be clearly specified in the 'Form A' of the
meetings and only the matters specified in the notice/agenda should
be taken up.
Only proposals on development work by a ward member may be
allowed on the spot which, the Society said, will prevent panchayat
members and the public from being caught unawares by the sudden
introduction of important applications for construction permissions,
tenders, NOCs, the Peaceful Society suggested.
The secretary should be instructed to make available to the panchayat
members all files and correspondence to be placed in the ensuing
meeting on any day after the notice for the meeting has been issued,
it demanded.
The society said that it has received complaints saying that the
sarpanch is allowed to keep all the files and correspondence of the
meeting in his custody and the secretary pretends to be helpless.
Any person who does not support the sarpanch is often deprived
of information even in the meeting.
At the time of confirmation of the minutes of previous meeting if
any changes are pointed out there should also be a reference of
the same in the previous minutes preferably in the remarks column,
the press note said.
At present sometimes certain details are deliberately omitted or
added in the minutes. When the same is pointed out it is reflected
in the next meeting, it is noted in the present minutes but there is no
mention of the same in the previous minutes. Anyone reading the
minutes later are not aware of the additions or deletions and are
misled, the press note pointed out.
The guidelines issued for utilisation of 'special grants' should also
be made applicable to other grants and development expenditure
of the panchayat wherein some wards are deliberately deprived of
development so that the ward member feels pressurised to support
the sarpanch lobby, the society demanded.
The Block Development Officers and the Extension Officers should
be held accountable for the malfunctioning of the panchayats and
disciplinary action should be initiated against them for not supervising
the working of the panchayats, the Peaceful Society demanded.

Re: [Goanet]Daman Bridge A Bharati reconstruct and neglect

2003-08-29 Thread Bernado Colaco
http://sify.com/news/othernews/fullstory.php?id=13236644&vsv=39
Daman tragedy toll rises to 26

Friday, 29 August , 2003, 10:22

Daman: With the recovery of one more body on Friday
morning, the death toll in Thursday's bridge mishap
has risen to 26 even as rescue operations continue for
the missing persons.

"The rescue operation resumed this morning when one
more body of a student was recovered," Indian
Administrative officer, Gyanendra Shrivastav told PTI.

Nearly ten vehicles and many pedestrians fell into the
Damanganga river after a dilapidated bridge collapsed
due to heavy rains in Daman.

At least 25 people were injured, eleven of them
seriously. The 325-metre long bridge was the only
connection between Moti Daman and Nani Daman (Grande
Damao and Pequeno Damao).
Following heavy rains in the region the river was
flooded when the mishap occurred, official sources
said adding, the water was around 40 feet deep.

Concerned people are standing on both sides of the
river since Thursday waiting to get any information
about their missing kin.
However, there is little hope of any survivors or any
more bodies to be found as police fear they might have
been flushed into the sea, just a few hundred metres
away from the mishap site.

The agitated public has blamed government negligence
for the
mishap. "The guarantee of the bridge expired long
back. Even despite repeated demands for an alternate
bridge, the government failed to provide the same,"
said one eye-witness.
"Even yesterday, the administration people were the
last one to reach here. It is the local fishermen who
were carrying out the rescue work till then," he
added.

Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard has made available
its helicopters if needed.

[Goanet]Konkani proverbs: Will konkani pundits help?

2003-08-29 Thread Teotonio R. de Souza
I am sorry the context in which I used them did not help to understand their
meaning. I wish some others on goanet could help out before I give my
answer. But proverbs are to be understood only through their contextual
usage. It is quite possible that all proverbs are not current in all parts
of Goa. I can only say that I did not invent it!

I do know konkani rather well, love proverbs or Opar as we in Salcete call
them
but am totally confused by these two. Are these Bardez Proverbs, in what
context
are they used? Whenever we have carpenters at home a famous proverb is " Bot
gattlear hat galcho podda" and one is aware what it means, but these two
have me
foxed.

Would someone be kind enough to enlighten me.

Thank you

Just suppose that Goanet has no father and no mother that is known to the

[Goanet]Mangloreans Catholics are Goans?

If that is the case, unrelated to Ashley Tellis, are Catholic
Mangloreans to be classified as non-Goans or are they one of the early
Goan Diaspora? There is much evidence that the Roman Catholic community
in Mangalore started with the immigration of six Goan families to that
part of Konkan.]

Would appreciate if Gilbert Lawrence could give me some references for
further research on this topic of the 'six Goan families'. My studies show
that many Goan Hindu families did migrate to Mangalore because of religious
persecution by the Portuguese. But no mention is made of Catholic families
migrating.

To the best of my knowledge the Manglorean Catholics have no Goan origins.
They were converted by Portuguese (and other) evangelists in the Konkan. As
were the 'East Indians' who were locals (Hindus) who were working for The
East India Company at the time they were converted to the Catholic faith.

I could be wrong.

Cecil

[Goanet]Re: Two banyan trees on Sinquerim plateau?

2003-08-29 Thread Teotonio R. de Souza
I had read in a 16th century Portuguese shipping rutter that the Portuguese
pilots should know they are entering the Goa bay when they see "duas arvores
de gralha" (banyan trees). Hence, they must have been there as a visible
landmark before the Portuguese occupation of Goa. Can anyone on this forum
tell us more about these vestiges of Pre-portuguese Goan heritage?
If they are still there (I believe they are there because I photographed
them from the Mandovi bridge some years ago), the environmentalists could
give us more details, close-up photos, and porpose to the Government that
they be declared protected?

Dear Plant/Heritage Lovers,
Environmentalism is not just about planting trees.A tree protected has more
value today than a seedling that will grow into a tree twenty years hence.
We have to protect while we plant, simply because we cannot live in the

[Goanet]Goan proverbs

2003-08-29 Thread Teotonio R. de Souza

With ref. to the request of Sonia Rosario Gomes, I responded to it earlier
by asking help from others. That way I may also learn other usages, if any. I
wish to direct those interested in some proverbs related to the Portuguese
historical presence in Goa to a link to a distinguished Portuguese language
webpage. Goans interested in checking their knowledge of Portuguese
language could consult this webpage most profitably. My article there may
clarify some of your doubts, at least about one of the proverbs I used. As
regards *bannxirem*, it is meant to say that despite any social / economic
differences among people, they all share in common the kitchen rag. It is
always soiled in any home.

[Goanet]Courses and careers: Finding your way around... (Yvonne Vaz)

EVERYONE WOULD agree how important it is to get relevant, local career
guidance at the right time. Below is an intiative, being promoted through
the Net. Please pass on the information to anyone in Goa who might benefit
from it. Send feedback to raynon at sancharnet.in (Yvonne Vaz). FN

COURSES AND CAREERS: Finding your way around

Compiled by Yvonne Vaz
raynon at sancharnet.in

Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a young person has
to make. It is a decision which will affect your future life. The right
choice can be made only if it is based on your interests, abilities and
personal qualities(aptitude). Instead of trying to fit yourself into a
career, you should find a career that fits you.

The process of choosing a career and deciding the course of study leading
to it should start in high school.

1 Find out all you can about one or more careers that you feel are suitable
for you.

2 It is also important to know the job opportunities in the career of your
choice.

3 Find out about the institutions which offer training and education that
you will require. Do not wait till after the SSC results are out to decide
whether you need to seek admission in the arts, commerce, science or
vocational stream. The selection of a particular stream will affect the
career you choose.

4 After the SSC examination, but before the results are announced, find out
about admission procedures, fees and other requirements at the educational
institute you intend to join. Once the results are out and marks sheets
distributed there is a mad rush and scramble for admissions and in the
confusion a student can be misled into the wrong course of study.

With so much competition it is not always possible for an average student to
get admission into the science or commerce stream. It is wise to have more
than one preference.

WHAT ELSE?

A young person today is required to have not only academic qualifications
(degree or diploma certificates) but also a whole set of other skills.
Education today is not just book learning but learning from life too. A
student needs to develop the ability to communicate and get along with
people and the ability to think ahead. A willingness to learn new things, to
be open minded, to take on challenges, to be able to withstand pressures are
essential qualities and these are sometimes even more important than scoring
high marks.

Besides working hard at studies, a student has to prepare him/herself for
life. Success in a job or career doesn't just happen on its own.

1 Be informed. Read newspapers and magazines regularly.

2 Take part in or listen to intelligent discussions/conversations.

3 Build up self esteem and confidence.

To do this, realize your strengths and talents instead of trying to copy or
compete with others. Competition has its advantages but it can cause
frustration, or bitterness and lower your self esteem. It is better to work
towards improving or increasing one's own potentials.

4 Develop your personality.

Cultivate hobbies, do fun things with your family and friends, take creative
courses like painting, craft-work etc. Take part in sports and games and
other extra curricular activities in school.

5 Take care of your physical health and appearance.

Height, weight, good eyesight etc. are included in the selection criteria
for certain careers, such as defence services or merchant navy.

Make a habit of being neat and clean in appearance.

6. Be courteous and pleasant in manner.

To conclude, it is important that you set goals and select the right course
of study. But remember that mind, body and spirit make up the total person
and there has to be development in all three areas. Only then goals can be
achieved and you can hope for a happy and successful future.

THE ARTS STREAM

It is unfortunate that in Goa (and maybe in other States of India) pursuing
higher studies in the Arts stream has been given an inferior status.
Students with the highest marks seek admission in the Science stream and the
second choice is Commerce.

Except for a few who opt for Arts as their first choice, many students join
the Arts stream only because they fail to get admission in the Science or
Commerce streams. But as their studies progress, these students find their
attitudes changing and they even begin to enjoy the subjects they previously
thought were uninteresting and useless.

The subjects offered in the Arts stream such as Languages and their
Literature, History, Philosophy, Economics, Sociology, Political Science,
Psychology and the like cater not only to the physical material world but
teach and guide a person to look deeply at life and to understand human
nature. A study of the Humanities shapes attitudes and moulds behaviour. It
deals with what really matters in life. It inspires one to dream -- to dare
-- to reach one's full potential.
