Dear Dr.Gilbert,
It is rather funny that they pluck all the feathers off a broiler and call
it a dressed chicken. It is now becoming fashionable for the fairer gender
to take unfair advantage of the male foibles by dressing likewise. It is a
moot point as to why only humans need to wear clothes while nature has
provided other animals according to their needs! It is not without reason
that Mark Twain said, Man is the only animal that blushes...or needs to.
Traffic Stoppers ENTRY PROHIBITED . Signs of our times!

In the meanwhile, it is recommended that two wheeler riders wear crash
helmets, the four wheeler drivers wear seat belts and to prohibit
pedestrians altogether as they do not pay road tax or parking fee or buy
petrol/diesel or.

Viva Goa.

[Goanet]Common Ward names

2004-01-01 Thread Miguel Braganza
Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen).

Dear Cecil,
Vaddo named after a surname[ Naikavaddo,Prabhuvaddo,Cruz vaddo] or caste [
Bamonvaddo,Marvaddo, Kumbarvaddo] or origin [ Gaokarvaddo,guansavaddo,bhailo
vaddo] or occurance[ Pornovaddo, Auchit vaddo] or location [Khalcho
vaddo, voilo vaddo, moddhlo vaddo] are common almost all over Goa.

We have the unique classification based on the occurence of the Screw Pine
[Pandanus spp] or kegdi or antho plant. Siquerim in Mayem-Vainguinim and
Candoilim,Naquerim in Quepem, Conquerim in Sanguem, Kerim[ or Querim] in
Ponda and Sattari are the example that come to my mind. [ Incidentally, the
antho or 'bondd' of the Kegdi is said to be the origin of Mapusa's rakhondar
Bondgueshwar or Bodgueshwar, whose zatra is on 6 january.]

Maina in Curtorim, Betim, Siolim and Bicholim [near Kudne]are wet spots with
plenty of natural springs and self-irrigated fields.

There is a Navelim in Margao and in Bicholim[ near Kudne]. Do not know
whether it is connected to a boat [Nau, nav] or to the Kannada version Nave
halli[ new village]. Velim and Navelim may also be associated with a river
beach[ Veler] Na velim.

There is a Chicalim near Vasco and another near Camurlim in Bardez.

There is a maddel near Karaswada and near Margao

There is an Altinho in Panaji and in Mapusa [Feira Alta] while Margao has
Aquem Alto. The word 'aquem' may also be associated with water.

There is a Vaiguinim in Dona Paula[near Cidade de Goa] and at Mayem-Bicholim
and a Baiguinim near Ribandar [ Rai bunder]and a Canaguinim in Quepem. What
'guinim' means, I do not know. The Santacruz vaddo of Bondir was originally
a 'bunder' where the sail boats [pathmari] used to dock before the khazans
were reclaimed from the Mandovi.

There is enough scope to get a Ph.D. for research on this subject. Perhaps
other netters can add names and the one who compiles them all applies to the
Goa University for a Ph.D. provided s/he has passed M.A./ M.Sc. earlier.

Warm regards,
Miguel

And many villages have a Gaunsavaddo where most of the Gaunkars of the
village originate from. Same with Bammonvaddo.

But what about Quitula, Bhatlem, Maddel and similar ward names that are
quite common? Would appreciate if anyone who knows a rare ward name, that
exists in at least TWO villages, would post the same. I can then compile a
list and approach some experts for the Origins and Meanings of these ward
 names.

This is part of a larger study Eng. Jose Lourenco (of Amazing Goa fame)
and
myself are undertaking on the evolution, and stratification of wards,
 within Goan villages through history.

Happy New Year. It was nice meeting a few Goanetters in flesh and blood
recently.

A lot of press reports have been published recently, but not one of them
mentions that persons who are not registered as delegates for the GVS can
participate in one or more of the dedicated sessions between the inaugural
and the valedictory functions. I think this needs to be clarified. Also a
few persons who could enrich the discussion could be invited on phone or
email for specific sessions.

When and why did Lourenço become Lawrence? Is it one of those cases I had
mentioned earlier of Goans trying to pass off as anglo-indians to gain jobs
in public services in British India? Are we now seeing a home-coming? I had
mentioned Couto / Coutinho becoming Coutts, Dias becoming Days, etc. There
are Lobow in Madras. They were Lobo originally Lobo.

From: George Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Goan Chief Guest speeches and learning posts

Hi George:
Thanks for explaining to me your stand. Here are my responses to your
comments. The readers of Goanet can now judge for themselves. Is not
this the idea of a discussion site? Gilbert.

George:
Filomena Giese can speak for herself, but I read her post very
differently than you did. After many years in Goan cyberspace, there is
a lot of hot air here and very little action. Filomena's comment
reflects the feelings of many.

Response: If one wants to respond to any post, take the time to write or
explain your difference of views. Then one and (others) know if the
response makes sense and which approach to follow. The original author
gets some feedback (which is good). He / She also knows where the
criticism is intellectual or is it some ignoramus shooting off with a
one liner.

I also grew up in Bombay (now Mumbai) and went to Goan Catholic
functions with chief guests. I am trying to recall one project or idea
presented which benefited Goa and Goans and cannot think of any.

Response: Aldona association of Bombay had financial scholarships and
prizes for Aldona students. Bombay Catholic gymkhana was a flourishing
club of Goan Catholics, which had many cultural events. The St. Luke's
medical guild was very active. George I could go on and on... With all
due respect to you the learning posts have told us of the pre-eminence
of Goan community in their environs more than three decade gone by. Can
you write a similar post of major contribution any Goan Diaspora
community in the last decade? How does a community arise? Does not every
project or idea need a leader? And how does that leader present his /
her ideas to the community?

I think many of the speeches were boring (I am being polite here).
Hence, I would prefer to see posts which describe CONCRETE projects and
ideas which have been implemented and which can be duplicated
successfully where Goans reside.

Response: That is precisely my point. You will get the ideas and project
off the ground if you invite these Goans as your guests. These Goans
have made a success and are recognized by everybody else except by other
smart Goans.

Regarding the Francis Xavier celebration in New York, can you provide a
list of proposals or projects or ideas at the event which actually
benefited Goans?

Response: The project pushed at this event was the Heart Center in Goa.
You can tell us about the success of this project because the donations
for this project are channeled through Goa Sudharop. From your question
are we to suppose otherwise?

Or was it another mindless church feast?

Response: After you provide the above answer, we will know if this was
another mindless church feast. a.k.a. tamasha with scotch, sorpatel and
susegad talk. In all seriousness I hope you can give us an update on the
Cardiac Center in Goa for which quite a lot of money has been collected.

You will no doubt know that our so-called Goans do not take the time to
have a Blessed Vaz or Fr. Agnelo celebration (Goans), but have time for
European saints.

Response: Would it not be nice for this opinion to be presented to the
Goan community in New York, San Francisco, Toronto etc by someone who is
respected in his community and can provide some leadership, face some
criticism and bring some of these very changes about?

While I am critical of these events, I mean no disrespect to the chief
guest Ralph D'Souza (my mom's cousin), Fr. Albert Castellino (also my
mom's cousin) and Fr. Basilio (a friend). I agree with Ralph that Goans
have an obligation to Goa.

Response: You know these outstanding people because they are your
relatives. Take the time to know those outstanding Goans that are not
your relatives. I am glad to know that you agree with chief guest...
perhaps because he pushed your project.

Final Thoughts: What is the down-side risks to having chief guests?
Unless the organizer does not want to share the microphone with any
other Goan.
Regards, GL, NY

NRI/NRG ani GOMANT VISHWA SAMMELAN

Response:
The NRI meet of 700 delegates is already a success. Remember these are
700 vacationers and their families (2-4 persons per delegate) that would
not have come to Goa January 3-5. Many will stay for 1-4 weeks. Post New
Year is a comparatively slow travel time as most travelers have
completed their Christmas and New Year journeys. Someone is Goa is
thinking smart. :=)

OK the government is spending money to host this GOMANT VISHWA SAMMELAN
event. In macro-economic terms, this Goan money is going into the
pocket of Goans themselves (and then into general circulation). The
visiting NRI is bringing in new money into the Goan economy. Even if
the whole NRI / NRG meeting is a tamasha which is the whole idea, Goa
(tourism) is already a winner. In addition it has promoted Goa as a
great tourist destination. It is estimated that on average a NRI visitor
spends (on the hotel, restaurant meals, travel, sightseeing, gifts)
about US $100 per day. That is Rs. 30,000 per tourist family per day
into the Goan economy. And not even a Khorro Niz Goenkar should cry
about that. :=)) Regards, GL, NY

GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
01 January 2004

We wish all GoaNetters
   A Very Happy and Prosperous
  NEW YEAR 2004

DANCES, FIREWORKS USHER IN NEW YEAR: Traditional dances, parties, mid-night
Church services and dazzling firework displays marked the celebrations which
were joined in by thousands of tourists to usher in the New Year. The
coastal belt was resounding with music till the wee hours of the day as
parties were organised on the beach front by hotels and individuals to ring
in the New Year. (H)

PANJIM ABLAZE: Walking or driving in Panjim is quite different these days
with various buildings being decorated with colourful lights through the
City Corporation's Panjim Ablaze programme. Panjim Ablaze was conceived
by Armando Gonsalves [EMAIL PROTECTED] and other enthusiastic folk
to brighten up their city for the Christmas-New Year season. Armando was
kind enough to drive us along the city roads to show the various buildings,
the Boca de Vaca spring and Bertaires house at Altinho, accompanied by
wellknown journalist Bemvinda Collaco, a bit of whose voice is heard on the
small video clip which we have included in this issue. Check at:
http://www.goacom.com/goanow/newyear/ablaze.htm

BISHOP, GUV, CM GREET GOANS: Archbishop Patriarch Raul Gonsalves together
with Auxiliary Bishop Filipe Neri Ferrao wishes everyone a pleasant and
promising New Year 2004. Meanwhile, Governor Kidar Nath Sahani and Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar have also extended warm greetings to the people of
Goa on the occasion of the New Year. (H)

ROAD RAGE IN COASTAL AREAS: Confusion continues to reign along the northern
coastal belt as police stations struggle to cope with the huge inflow of
tourists and revelers. The Calangute and Candolim roads appeared to be
beyond the scope of the law even as the rich and famous sped by in their
Mercedes Benz cars competing with the jeeps driven by their
not-so-well-to-do countrymen. Domestic and foreign tourists were seen
speeding by on two-wheelers seemingly unmindful of the danger they were
causing to themselves and to other motorists.

A CARAVAN IN UK, A HOUSE IN GOA: According to a report in the UK-based
Sunday Times, purchasing houses in Goa and other parts of India has become
a lucrative option for foreigners. At the end of the day it's no more
expensive than a caravan in Bridlington, says Jan Turner, a
public-relations director, quoted in the Times report. Jan and husband
Robert have just bought a new three-bedroom flat in Goa. Spurred on by the
glut of holiday-home programmes and cheaper and more regular long-haul
flights, Britons are widening their horizons when it comes to buying abroad.
(H)

RAPE OF UK SCRIBE: 2 ACQUITTED: Two persons charged for raping a journalist
from United Kingdom were acquitted by the additional sessions court in
Margao on December 31. (GT).

MAN FLINGS BOY INTO A WELL: Suleman Shaikh (35), a resident of Navelim, was
arrested for flinging a boy into a well recently. The accused irked by
children playing cricket, caught hold of the 11-year-old boy, Irappa, and
flung him into a well. (NT)

GOA YEARNS FOR MORE TOURISTS: Even as an estimated 1.25 lakh tourists-both
foreign and domestic-descended on the State to ring in the New Year, Goa
Tourism has resolved to launch a concerted effort to ensure that 2004 will
be a successful year. Tourism Director N Suryanarayana said that for the
first time all government department would work in the tandem to ensure that
Goa is high on the list of the world's favourite tourism destinations.
During 2003 more than 20 lakh tourists visited Goa during the year, a
significant increase from 2002's 16 lakh arrivals. We expect arrivals to
increase by at least 30 per cent during 2004 because of the Exposition and
the IFFI, Suryanarayana said. (GT)

PETROL, DIESEL PRICES UP: The New Year will witness a record high in prices
of petrol and diesel as consumers will have to shell out Re.1 to Rs.1.20
more for a litre of the two fuels from January 1.

HELMETS FOR TWO-WHEELER RIDERS: Though there is stoic silence over effective
implementation of compulsory helmet rule for two-wheeler riders from today,
the government withdrawing the exemption granted in MV Rules last year makes
it imperative for the law enforcing machinery to implement the Motor Vehicle
Act, 1998. (NT)

CENTRAL BANK TO FINANCE TOURISM: There is ample scope for tourism and
Central Bank is keen to finance this sector as well in Goa, said General
Manager MB Khurjekar while addressing a press conference at the Verna
branch. The bank has 22 branches in Goa with total deposits of around Rs.390
lakh and advances of Rs.54 lakh. (GT)

India's leap year before the leap year

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2003 02:03:07 AM ]

TOP SHOTS - Total Recall - Sports 2003

The Golden bronze
Nobody, including Anju herself, would have lost sleep had she failed to
win a medal at the World Athletic Championships in Saint-Denis, Paris,
earlier this year. But, now, with the historic bronze adorning her
mantlepiece, Anju will find the pressure of expectation in 2004, which
is Olympic year. Training with the legendary US long jumper Mike Powell
and being signed up by an international management firm (HCI) only
partly contributed to her learning and growth in 2003. It was the sheer
experience of jumping with top-class athletes that saw the rise and rise
of Anju. And, of course, the support of husband-cum-coach Bobby.

Advani on cue
Pankaj Advani sweetened the Diwali celebrations for India's cuesport
fans by claiming the World snooker title beating a Pakistani, Mohammed
Saleh, 11-6, in the final at Jiangmen, China, in October. He became the
second Indian, after Om Agarwal in 1984, and the youngest to win the
title. India have a clutch of billiards title, so the lone snooker title
that the late Agrawal had won was endearing for all. For two decades the
country wondered if OB's feat would be replicated. The answer was
negative until 2003 when Bangalore-lad Advani won the world crown to
show there was life in snooker after OB.

Sania's doubles
A band ushered in the Wimbledon men's singles final between Roger
Federer and Mark Philippoussis on Centre Court. Elsewhere at the All
England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club that cloudy July day, Sania Mirza
and Alisa Kleybanova had already composed a melody of their own by
winning the girls doubles title. In the final they beat Katerina Bohmova
of the Czech Republic and Michaela Krajicek of The Netherlands 2-6 6-3
6-2. The hard-hitting Sania became the first Indian female to win a
Grand Slam at any level. She became an overnight star. She went on to
win four gold in the Afro-Asian Games in her hometown.

Gagangoal!!!
Talk of Indian hockey in 2003 and the first image that flashes across is
of Gagan Ajit Singh celebrating with raised arms and screaming with
delight Gabriel Batistuta style after another super-strike. Given
his exceptionally high scoring rate, 'Gagangoal' would be an apt
nickname for the Indian goalscoring machine. Over the last year, Indian
hockey achieved some famous victories, and 'Gagangoal' was in the thick
of action in all of them. However the Punjab forward seems to reserve
his best against Pakistan. The sensational double strike in the
unforgettable rally at the Amstelveen Champions Trophy league match
against Pakistan will be talked about for a few generations to come. He
repeated the feat against them in the Asia Cup and the Afro-Asian Games
to round up the spectacular year.

Aaj ka Arjun
Arjun Atwal set out to make major inroads in pro golf at the beginning
of 2003. By the end of the year, the Kolkata-based golfer made a mark in
Asia and America. It was a landmark year in his long pro career, leading
him to heights not attained by an Indian golfer yet. While Atwal did
consistently well throughout the year, the icing(s) on the cake came in
December When he qualified for the US PGA Tour and followed it up with
the Asian Order of Merit title. He also became the first to reach $ 1
million on the Asian Tour. Atwal's exploits have been an inspiration to
a plethora of Indian pros trying to break free on the international stage.

2004: India on threshold of breakthrough
BOBBILLI VIJAY KUMAR
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2003 01:55:32 AM ]
The Indian cricket team couldn't have left 2003 more tantalisingly
poised. If everything goes well for Steve Waugh on Tuesday, he would be
a delighted man: even a seasoned Hollywood writer would not have been
able to conceive such a dramatic finale to his career.

But then, his Sydney Opera could easily turn into a nightmare too: one
or two bad sessions and the most successful skipper of the current
generation with red rag and blazing willow in tow could well drown in
his own teardrops.

If that happens, India will shed tears too: but they will be tears of
joy, of celebration, of the ultimate breakthrough. After all, it will be
their first series victory in Australia; it will probably be their
greatest triumph too. Hopefully, it will also bury the voodoo that
they've been carrying on their overseas tours since the days of Lala
Amarnath.

Sourav Ganguly will surely be crowned emperor; Rahul Dravid has already
been anointed king; Sachin Tendulkar will still remain first, but first
only among equals.

Yes, 2004 promises to be one of those years: exciting yet dangerous,
promising yet on the edge of a precipice. It could be the year when
Indian sport finally comes of age; but it could also be the year when
everything slips back into the ravine.

Win or lose, Ganguly's Tigers will come back as heroes. But they won't
be able to sit on their great moments for too long: a tour to Pakistan
is looming. A defeat in Musharraf's den will mitigate all the joy that
earlier wins in battlefields had evoked.

India will, of course, be visiting that part of its forgotten world
after almost 15 years (for Tests); the cricket itself may not be
exhilarating but it could do much more than that for their bilateral
ties. History is waiting to be made.

It is waiting to be written in various other sports too: 2004 is the
year of the Olympics and, for probably the first time, the country will
be looking at them with hope and expectation.

India is actually in a position to dream about more than one medal on
sport's biggest stage: Anju George, Anjali Bhagwat, Abhinav Bindra,
Leander Paes Mahesh Bhupathi and the hockey team.

If Rajinder Singh's Boys in Blue manage a tango at Athens, they will
give the final kiss of life to the national sport. They will, of course,
have to cross the qualifying hurdle in Madrid first. After that, the
world will be at their feet.

Arjun Atwal will also be taking a gigantic leap for Indian golf: he will
make his first foray into the fierce US Tour and even a whiff or two of
victory will be enough to spur the likes of Jyoti Randhawa and Digvijay
Singh.

He will get a lot of time to conjure that magic moment; but at the other
extreme, where everything is won or lost in seconds, Narain Karthikeyan
can finally become the first Indian Formula One driver. He won't be just
the 'fastest Indian in the world' anymore.

There is lot of action in the international arena too: apart from the
Olympics, the Champions Trophy in cricket, Euro soccer and all the usual
affairs. Will Schumacher take another title? Will the Williams sisters
quell the Belgian girls? Will Chelsea rise above Man United and Real
Madrid? Will the 100-metre sprint record be broken? Will Tyson land in
more trouble?

Yes, 2004 is worth waiting for. For India, though, the celebrations will
begin or end in the first week itself: so, here's one hoping for the big
thrill in Sydney.

[Goanet]Goan Chieft Guest speeches and learning posts

2004-01-01 Thread George Pinto
Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen).

Hello Gilbert

Filomena Giese can speak for herself, but I read her post very differently than you
did. After
many years in Goan cyberspace, there is a lot of hot air here and very little action.
Filomena's
comment reflects the feelings of many.

I also grew up in Bombay (now Mumbai) and went to Goan Catholic functions with chief
guests. I am
trying to recall one project or idea presented which benefitted Goa and Goans and
cannot think of
any. I think many of the speeches were boring (I am being polite here). Hence, I would
prefer to
see posts which describe CONCRETE projects and ideas which have been implemented and
which can be
dulplicated successfully where Goans reside.

Regarding the Francis Xavier celebration in New York, can you provide a list of
proposals or
projects or ideas at the event which actually benefitted Goans? Or was it another
mindless church
feast? You will no doubt know, that our so-called Goans do not take the time to have
a Blessed
Vaz or Fr. Agnelo celebration (Goans), but have time for European saints. While I am
critical of
these events, I mean no disrespect to the chief guest Ralph D'Souza (my mom's cousin),
Fr. Albert
Castellino (also my mom's cousin) and Fr. Basilio (a friend). I agree with Ralph that
Goans have
an obligation to Goa.

Happy New Year to you and those on the Gregorian calendar. To the others, cheers
anyway.

Best wishes,
George Pinto

[Goanet]Goan Ethnic Purity

2004-01-01 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen).
Goanet founder Herman Carneiro will be there. See you there!
--

HAPPY NEW YEAR- NOVEM VOROS

Goan Ethnic Purity

This subject has surfaced recently generating many posts. As I thnk
about the subject, one is mixing up genetic purity and culture and
society. In one if not two generations, my progeny will likely be
American by culture even though they will continue to be Goan by genetic
inheritance. Please look up a textbook of Sociology for definition of a
Culture and Society.

What generated the post to the Brits was the name of our ethnicity and
way of life. The Brits were wrong in their statement that Luso-Indians
became/ are now called Goans. They were very gracious and prompt in
their reply and we have to give them credit (and learn!).

The probability is very high that Mesticios or Luso-descendentes (not
Luso-Indians which is an English word) behaved culturally like
Portuguese and returned to Portugal. In fact what pissed off the
Portuguese padres about Goans was that in spite of the Catholic faith
the Goans behaved like Concane (Goan Hindus). It was partly to stop this
nana-sense that the Purtugez introduced the Inquisition against the
Catholics (ani others). One famous quote from a Portuguese priest was
that Canarims (Goan Catholics) ARE CATHOLIC BY FAITH BUT HINDU BY
CULTURE, CASTE, DRESS, DIET, SOCIAL CODES, LANGUAGE, RESIDENCE AND LIFE
STYLE. It is these characteristics that define Goan society and not the
genes of the people. So even with Goan and/or different genes, one could
still be a Goan if one had many of the above mores and customs. You can
see my book for the specific (and well defined) cultural practices (ani
NOT Chalta-Hai ani Everything-Goes). By the same token in the absence of
any of the above markers (in CAPS) it is difficult to call one a Goan
with or without the genes. Ani drinking Feni does not count. :=)). And
neither does live-in arrangements, polygamy, divorce, cremation etc. I
am not passing moral judgments on these practices. All I am saying these
are not Goans cultural practices. AND JUST BECAUSE ONE OR A FEW MEMBERS
OF THE GOAN SOCIETY DO SO, THAT DOES NOT BECOME THE PRACTICE AND THE
MORES OF THE GOAN SOCIETY.

Contrary to what many have written and even more may think, the
exception is not the rule. It is what is says - the exception. And the
exceptions do not become the norm, even if the exception is reported as
I know / heard of this one case. In our field, we call them anecdotal
cases. Of late, the exceptions may get sensationalized and romanticized
by some articulate Goans writing novels or postings from some rustic
setting on the banks of the boro vodlo lake close to the north pole - I
mean Swindon. :=)) These fictional tales then become the basis of some
scientific THESIS and are posted on some enchanting Goan website. If we
Goans are lucky these stories may even be made into TV mini-series or a
movie.

What surprises me are these deforming and defaming stories (about
free-wheeling sex and marriages) are put out by Khoro Niz Goenkars. The
same also complain vehemently that some right wing RSS is demeaning the
image of the Goenkars and especially the Christaums. While Goans know
the truth from the kaneos, some non-Goan who now goes to the Goa-web
swallows these kaneos hook, line and sinker. Then a (Ph D) consultant
will write even further denigrating stories about our community. After
all the Brits got their facts from some consultants or researchers.

It is hence all the more important that Goans stay vigilant for these
fokana stories. In the past these kaneos were widely circulated by our
tarvotis. Now we have to deal with armchair cerebral tarvotis with some
pretty wild imaginations. :=)) Good for them! :=)) Not so good for the
rest of us.:=)) These Mental Tarvotis are now in cyberspace armed with
some slick web-pages. The more fascinating the stories and more graphic
/ outrageous the Goan images, the more popular will be the novels and
more books will be sold and more attractive the web site. Do you think
these Goan / Konkan web sites would place this critique on their pages?
No soiree!!! But we can hope and pray that some day the (XYZ) smoke will
clear and truth will prevail.
Regards, GL, NY

[Goanet]Surnames

Subject: Surnames

Happy New Year to all Goenkars and Goanetters.

I have not been following this thread much. I did come across a question
to me to be about adding Lawrence to the List of Goan surnames that I
surmised is being done. Please by all means add Lawrence (my birth
certificate) or Lourenco (my father's birth certificate) to the list.

I am not in favor of modifying surnames en mass. I think the problems
will surface in 100 years. Then, three generation from now if someone
with an interest is perusing family roots, there will be confusao- but
innit that Goan?.:=))

I think more important to maintain our Goan heritage would be to compile
a list of Goan first names. And encouraging young parents to use them.
Recently, I came across a pure ani strong Goan couple (both parents)
select names Aaron and Noah for their twin boys. It just got me
thinking. What ever happened to Pedru, Gabru, Babush ani Bosteaum? :=))
Regards, GL

Dear Teotonio,
Greetings for the year 2004.
I do not know which query you are replying to. This message looked abrupt to
me. Is it an answer to the search for Portuguese words in Konkani and vice
versa?
With good wishes,
William

It should not surprise anyone if linguistic imperialism is an effective
way of domination, be it politically or economically. All western colonial
powers have done that by imposing their language. During the Portuguese
regime the competence of a Goan was measured by his capacity to handle
Portuguese language. As a result, in his own native land, Goenkar4s
 Konkani
was of no use. It reminds me of a definition of mother-tongue by
 Ravindra
Kelekar. It is the language that helps one to earn his bread or
 livelihood.
How would it be if we had asked the Portuguese to learn Konknni to
 continue
 staying in Goa?

I also think that we need not re-invent the wheel by trying to list words
 of
Portuguese origin that entered as loan-words into Konknni. An elaborate
 and
scholarly work has already been done by our countryman, Sebastico Rodolfo
Dalgado and it was published in Baroda with an Introduction in English by
Anthony Xavier Soares 1936, and was reprinted 1998 by Asian Educational
Services in Delhi. It is a volumous tome with 320 pages and entitled
*Portuguese vocables in Asiatic languages*. We are even provided with
 minute
details about the origin and derivation of such words. I recommend that
 all
discussing this issue on Goanet stop wasting their time and acquire a copy
of this book. Those wishing to place it on website could also do so,
 because
the book belongs already to public domain and is no longer subject to
 copyright.

Further to what the good Goemcar Godfrey Gonsalves has

posted about Konkani and the attempt to forcibly

Sanskritize it (much like HINDI was), we are placing a

provisional list of Konkani words which are being

targetted by the Saraswat Revisionists for

[Goanet]Konkanis... who are they?

2004-01-01 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen).
Goanet founder Herman Carneiro will be there. See you there!
--

One version from the Net FN

http://theory.tifr.res.in/bombay/history/ethnic/konkani.html

  The Konkanis

Language: Konkani, Religion: Hindu/Christian/Muslim, Population: 4.5
million.

The Konaki people like to trace their history back to 4000 BC. The
movement of these tribes to the region of present-day Goa is sometimes
traced back to the 11th century AD.

However, well-documented history starts from the time of the Maratha
empire in the 15th century. A large fraction of the population now live
in the Konkan coastal pockets of the Ratnagiri and Sawantwadi districts
of Maharashtra, Goa http://www.goacom.com/, and coastal Karnataka
http://ece.iisc.ernet.in/bu.edu/karnataka/ and Kerala
http://www.keral.com/. These settlements can be dated from the early
16th Century.

During the 14th century rule of the Kings of Gujarat over the islands of
Bombay, a people called /Naitias/ first appeared in these islands. They
are believed to be Konkanis.

The /Siddis/ are a Konkani people of African origin, who trace their
history back to their arrival in India in the 13th century from
Ethiopia. A /Sidi/ held the Janjira sea fort /bombay/leisure/travel/
during the Maratha-Portuguese wars of the 16th century.

The Doctrina Christi, published in 1622 by the British missionary Fr.
Thomas Stephens, was the first book in Konkani. Believed to be the first
printed book in an Asian language, this book uses the Roman script. In
1640 Stephens also published Arte da Lingoa Canarim, a Konkani grammar
book written in 1580. The Devanagari script was first used in 1675 in a
treatise on /Ayurveda/. The first newspaper in Konkani, O Konkani, was
started in 1886. Presently, Konkani also uses the Kannada as well as the
Arabic scripts.

Among famous Konkanis one can count Guru Dutt, a famous film-maker, Remo
Fernandes a well-known pop-singer, Prakash Padukone, a former Badminton
world champion, Julio Riberio, once the chief of Police in Bombay and
India's ex-ambassador to Rumania, and Narsing Rao Benegal who helped
Ambedkar in drafting the Indian constitution.

Hi Cecil
In response to
Would appreciate if anyone who knows a rare ward name,

that
exists in at least TWO villages, would post the same.
I can think of Dongorim or Dongrim in Navelim
where I grew up and one in Majorda/Nuvem a smaller
ward
I remember our incoming mail going to wrong ward
Cheers

 Dear Ms. Pereira,

Though I agree with your sentiments about the Red
 Light area in Baina being
an eyesore and a nuisance to decent and law abiding
 citizens of the area, I
beg to differ on certain finer points you have
 raised.

 -

Flush them out and they will fend for themselves. I

 pass this area every day
on my way to work and it makes me sad.

I don't quite get this. Are you sad for the
 prostitutes who are forced to
sell their body to make a living? Or for yourself
 and the other locals who
have to put up with the nuisance? I suspect it is
 the latter since you want
to flush them out. Do you think this is a humane
 approach?

 -

We watch them in buses/ eating houses/ beauty
 saloons.

So perhaps they should not be allowed to use public
 transportation, eat in
public restaurants and enter beauty saloons? Reminds

 me of South Africa. Or
was it the medieval 'untouchability' system?

 -

A group of them even enter the church and walk up
 the aisle ,in the middle
of the service and begin venerating the images
 around.

Surely the local priest can stop this disturbing
 practice. But I hope you
are not suggesting that they now not be allowed in
the Church to pray - as
long as they do it respectfully and reverently?
 Turning away the faithful
is against the teachings of the Catholic faith - I
 think.

 -

We could help with some monetary assistance but let

 them go.

This is a positive sign. But I doubt some small
 monetary assistance will
alleviate their loss at losing their right to pursue

 their livelihood. A
more practical solution would perhaps be proper
 relocation and
rehabilitation. They are human beings too. Flushing
 them away, physically
or with money, will mean just putting your dirt into

 the neighbour's
backyard. A bigger perspective of the problem is
 required.

Dear Mam'Pereira,

At the onset let me wish you a happy and prosperous
new year.
Is prostitution legalised in Goa?

Just a small question, being a teacher how would you
tackle an issue of AIDS in your school or neighbouring
area of your school.

Secondly about your trip to rajasthan and being
quizzed , I do not know what the topic on ;your
seminar was all about, surely not the Baina stuff
atleast, and you should not feel worried when
questioned on this issue it is a fact all one has to
do is find out a solution.

What is more worrying , is the HIV/AIDS, who can
educate us on giving the correct percentage of
HIV/AIDS cases in Goa? Aids has no discrimination, the
authorities and the distinguished people and teachers
should apply their minds and find a solution .

 It's been years we've
been hoping and praying for this area to be wiped
 out. Private is no excuse
for ruining our children / homes and threaten our
 health. I congratulate the
Present Government and the Police force .,for taking

 a tough stand. In the
past, corrupt politicians supported them for their
 votes .
Flush them out and they will fend for themselves. I
 pass this area every day
on my way to work and it makes me sad. We watch them

 in buses /.eating
houses/ beauty saloons .A group of them even enter
 the church and walk up
the aisle ,in the middle of the service and begin
 venerating the images
around. We could help with some monetary assistance
 but let them go.
