The article by Bindu Vaz is a useful reminder to us all to look at a person
for what he/she is within rather than on the surface. Of course, this does
not mean that one should not make oneself presentable - but that itself
should not be the final goal.

I would like to add onve more episode to the list by Bindu. That is the
mis-utilisation of a young girl from Jammu who was coaxed into appearing in
a beauty contest, and when she won, she was black-mailed in all sorts of
ways. Also, in many small towns in India this beauty pageants are also
getting 'popular'.

I understand that such events are no longer popular in the West - though
the contests are still held there. It is the third-world countries that
are targetted, and that is why there have been so many from India who have
won in the recent past, and these events are held in such countries. The
whole programme seems to be to sell cosmetic products, and not the
well-being of the contestants.

[Goanet]Indian Air Traffic

2005-01-19 Thread Philip Thomas
From financialexpress.com:

Domestic air travel takes wings

OUR ECONOMY BUREAU
Posted online: Thursday, January 20, 2005 at hours IST

NEW DELHI, JAN 19: More and more people are taking to air travel. Fiscal
2004-05 has witnessed a spurt in civil aviation traffic, more significantly
in the domestic segment. The international traffic too is growing at an
accelerated pace as compared to a moderate increase recorded in the previous
financial year.

What is also significant is the jump in import and export cargo handled at
international airports.

According to official figures, the import cargo handled at international
airports during April-November 2004 shot up by more than 30% as against the
growth of less than 10% recorded in the corresponding period of last fiscal.
The export cargo which recorded a negative growth in last fiscal has gone up
by more than 11% during the first eight months of the current financial
year.

Official figures indicate that 94.37 lakh passengers were handled at
international terminals during April-November 2004 as compared to 82.02 lakh
passengers during the corresponding period in the last financial year. The
growth rate works out to more than 15%. The growth rate was less than 5%
during the corresponding period of last financial year. Most of the
international passenger traffic is handled at Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi,
Chennai and Trivandrun airports.

According to a report of the ministry of statistics and programme
implementation, during April-October 2004 five terminals of international
airports handled 81.72 lakh passengers. However, this was 20.1% less than
the handling capacity of the 102.25 lakh passengers for the period at these
airports.

As far as domestic air traffic at these airports was concerned, 152.34 lakh
passengers were handled during April-November 2004 as compared to 121.11
lakh passengers during the corresponding period of fiscal 2003-04, recording
a growth of around 26%. The growth rate in the passenger traffic last year
hovered around 10%.

Taking into account the April-October 2004 figure of 130.29 lakh passengers,
the ministry's report said that capacity utilisation was 10% less than the
handling capacity of 144.69 lakh passengers for the period at these
airports.

According to the April-October 2004 figures, the five international airports
handled 2.52 lakh tonne of export cargo which was 11.9% more than the cargo
handled during the corresponding period last year. The growth, the report
said, has considerably improved from the negative growth of 0.9% recorded
during April-October 2003. As compared to the pro-rata capacity of 2.54 lakh
tonne for the period, it lagged behind by 0.9%.

1.60 lakh tonne import cargo handled at these airports during April-October
2004 was 32.5% more than 1.21 lakh tonne during the corresponding period in
2003. The growth rate, the report said, was high compared to 8% during
April-October 2003.

[Goanet]wesley coutinho salcete fc striker

2005-01-19 Thread armstrong augusto vaz

He shoots from different angles and on occasion’s sets up his colleagues for
the kill. He leaps and out jumps rival defenders to nod in goals past the
rival defense. He fly’s like a featured creature to connect low dipping
crosses from the flanks in the goal mouth into goals. He holds lot of promise
on the football field for a eighteen year old.

ARMSTRONG VAZ takes a closer look at the upward career graph of Cuncolim based
football striker who recently represented the Goa junior team in the all India
national junior championship at Jharkand.

Wesley coutinho has been revelation for Salcete football club in the second
division campaign this season notching goals in every match that his play so
far. Wesley’s goal scoring feat has made Salcete f ootball club march into
the play off from the south zone possible along with ABC benaulim.

The two Salcete based teams will be fighting it out with two North zone
qualifiers for a lone place in next seasons first division league.

A closer look at one of the Products of Cuncolim youth development schme
WESLEY COUTNHO from Milleavaddo Cuncolim, son of Wilson coutinho and Yolanda
coutinho.

Higher caliber football beamed into our homes through cable TV have been a
source of inspiration and motivation for many a new breed of young footballers
who want to make it big in the football world.

Striker coutinho was part of the goa junior team which took part in the all
India junior national championship at Jharkand. Although Wesley was
representing goa for the first time he has fond memories of the tournament as
an individual as he scored two of the five goals that Goa scored.

His two goals however could not bail out goa with Goa losing two of the three
matches and drawing one three all against Uttar Pradesh while losing 1-4 to
Kerala and 1-2 to Jharkand.

Wesley Coutinho idolizes Manchester united striker Rudi Van Nielstroy as He
grew up in the football culture in his village. He soaked in the football
atmosphere watching senior boys from his ward play football. The talent was
evident at a young age and with it the ambition and drive to make it big.
Senior players from his ward like veteran Diego coutinho and Denzil coutinho
playing along side him made hi m aware of his abilities and encouraging words
of advice came whoever matter to him.

He got his first lessons of coaching as an under 12 player of the Cuncolim
union football team from coach levino dias, thereafter he grew up to play for
the under 15 Cuncolim union team in the Goa football association organized
tournaments, where he doubled up as a defender and striker.

Besides the Manchester united striker Ruud van nistelrooy He other Indian
favourite player is East Bengal medio Alvito D”Cunha, while international
Mahesh Gawali and two other Cuncolim based players Fredy Mascarenhas and Micky
Fernandes playing for professional clubs has motivated him enough to seek
greener pastures in the big footballing world in the coming years.

Ivory John his former physical education teacher at Don Bosco High school
sulcona Rivona recalls his early childhood days at School when Wesley dreamt
of playing for either of the two clubs Dempo sc or Salgoacar and was did not
shy away in expressing his desire to his teachers and class mates.

Wesley has been part of the Don Bosco high school sulcona rivona subroto
Mukerjee state level football team which made the trip to Delhi. He was one
of the key member of the squad pumping in 17 goals on the way to his school
annexing the title. The trip to Delhi was an experience for Wesley who was the
highest scorer of the schoolat the state level pumping in a phenomenal 17
goals in all.

Then came the under-17 call from Salcete FC coach Peter Rodrigues who has been
able to drill in the belief that he can make it big in the Football World. “He
has natural talent and knack of scoring goals which is a god’s gift. He has to
work hard to build up his game further to make it build, he has also to
discipline himself in order to attain success”.

Wesley coutinho has also benefited from the salcete football club coaching
where in the club brought in India coach Stephen Constantine to give some
words of encouragement and advice to the young boys in the age group of 16-19
years last season.

At Goa Juniors, Wesley worked under hard task master Mariano Dias, besides
Ignatius Dias and Mickdom Rebello.

Wesley has also been part of the Cuncolim Educational Society’s Higher
Secondary team which lost to St.Xavier s Higher Secondary, Mapusa in the inter-
higher secondary tournament last season.

In between the Cuncolim inter village and third division league player for the
season which has just ended has also turned up for Dempo juniors in the
national football league for NFL clubs last may assisting Dempo sports club in
the tournament.

His moment of joy came when he scored the lone goal against Salgoacar sports

[Goanet]GoanetReader -- Rewind... looking back to Goa's first film fest

2005-01-19 Thread GoanetReader
REWIND: A LOOK BACK AT GOA'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL FILM FEST, IFFI2004

By Joseph Zuzarte
jzuzarte at rediffmail.com

AFTER THE DUST settles on IFFI2004, the writer,
a journalist from Goa who spent long years in Mumbai,
takes a look back at the reason which everyone
came here for in the first place -- films.

The curtains have rung down on IFFI 2004. And, as everybody expected, the
Iranian 'Beautiful City' won the Golden Peacock for Best Film. It was one of
the films I decided to give a miss to; it maybe a cinematic masterpiece, but
it's not my kind of film. But I did see the Thai 'A Beautiful Boxer' and
half expected it to win the top prize, so powerful is the film. The full
impact of the movie hits you just after you leave the screening. It's a
masterful allegory on the ambivalence of our sexualities, our loves and our
lives. Who are we? It asks, and what is sex? The violence and love of the
sexual encounter are recreated in the most masterful fashion in, of all
places, the kick-boxing ring.

There was not really much to choose from in the Asian Competition section.
The Chinese 'The Endless Way' was, well, endlessly boring, though also
cinematically beautiful. It provides a glimpse into the life of a remote
mountain village in Hunan province in China, which has a water problem
(endless shots of women and men bringing up water from a deep cavern). Which
is finally solved by the 'workers'; it's all about how Communism helps
people. Definitely no 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'.

The Malayasian 'The Princess of Mount Sedang' was like a bad Hindi movie. It
starts with one of the heroes single-handedly thrashing 20 of the village
toughies, and so on. Even 'A Beautiful Boxer' was more like a typical Hindi
film, and had its moments of bad production and bad acting. Everybody of
course is familiar with the Hong Kong kug fu movies and their
brawl-a-minute. Viewing the Asian Competition, there would seem to be a lot
of similarities in the commercial film-making of India, Thailand, Malayasia,
China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. But there's another kind of sensibility in
the other Asian countries west of India, like Iran, Israel, etc.

The most exciting section at the IFFI was the Cinema of the World,
which had some real gems like 'The Motorcycle Diaries' from the
U.S.A. the French 'The Butterfly' was a delicious tease of an old
butterfly collector and a pre-teen girl who go off butterfly hunting
for three days in the jungles.

Back home, the girl's mother, who had become pregnant with the girl when she
was 15, hunts for her child; the mother had not come home one night, which
was how the girl ended with the old man. Thus ensues a frantic police hunt
for the old man and the girl with fears of dirty old paedophiles and all
that. The screening of the movie was marked by a perceptible anticipation in
the audience, more so because Goa has become infamous for its own
paedophiles.

Another masterpiece was the Canadian French movie 'Book of Senses', which
probably also had the most explicit sex of all the movies shown at IFFI.
It's about an ageing writer with a writer's block and a young woman
literature student who has terminal lung cancer, and finally dies at the end
of the movie. The girl befriends the writer, and pretending to be a hooker,
seduces the writer with her titillating sex talk. But it's a doomed affair
in the end.

'The French Men', another movie from France, was a refreshing take on
infidelity -- this time by the wife, the nature of love and male bonding.

There were many other movies, from Portugal, Croatia (a particularly graphic
one on male homosexuality), Hungary, etc., which, like most European cinema,
took one everyday aspect of human relationships -- the most complex of all
things in the world -- under the cinematic microscope and tenderly examined
it in all its hues. But those kind of movies only make sense to people with
those kind of sensibilities. For others they~Rre just 'sex' movies; some
viewers were wondering how such 'xxx' movies got past the Indian censors,
bringing to the fore one of the 'main' attractions of the IFFI, which
screens uncensored foreign movies.

Indian movies were represented in strength. Apart from the Bollywood movies,
and the movies like 'Chai Paani' by the new, young brigade, there were a
number of Bengali, Assamese, Malayalam and movies from other parts, all
recognisably 'Indian' movies. There's a whole school of Indian film-makers
who swear by the technique of cinematic poetry and lyricism as pioneered by
Styajit Ray, which makes the depiction of the hard life in villages (also
known as poverty) bearable.

There's also an overdose of tears in Indian cinema, and too much is
being made of broken families, broken relationships and unrequited
love. And we have a long way to go before we can deal with sex in
the realistic manner of European film-makers. This was very much

What clearly frustrates Tariq and the Baathist

[Goanet]Solidarity Alert: TO ALL THOSE WHO NORMALLY EAT FISH

2005-01-19 Thread muriel mario
Dear Netters,

This message is from Fr. Xavier Pinto, a Redemptorist priest we
know personally. He is Secretary to the Commission For Labour,
Catholic Bishops Conference Of India (CBCI).

Normally based in Delhi, Fr. Xavier travels widely to help
organise the fishing community around the globe.

At present he is in coastal South India, helping the Tsunami-hit
fishing communities there.

In solidarity with our Tsunami-hit brothers and sisters
everywhere.

Muriel Mario.
---
Message from Fr. Xavier Pinto:

IN SOLIDARITY WITH TSUNAMI VICTIMS IN SOUTH ASIA

Please send this to all your friends in this part of the world

TO ALL THOSE WHO NORMALLY EAT FISH:

Please consider the following...

There is a campaign going on regarding those lost at sea as being
devoured by the fish. There is another campaign going on about
so many dead fish on the shores of other countries so don't eat
fish for some time! This campaign is detrimental to the very
livelihood of the people you wish to reach out to in the Tsunami
2004 South Asia disaster

Fishing activities in the south of India and in Sri Lanka have
been in suspension over the past two weeks. All missing persons
at sea have been in that region. The fish coming to your town is
from elsewhere and may be from cold storage's. Karnataka and
Maharashtra have good storage facilities.

Only the following fish feed on alien or human flesh= Scavenger
fish, killer whales and killer sharks. These three varieties are
not edible varieties like so many varieties in your home
aquarium; these are not sold in the markets and do not reach you
table.

Besides all fish only feed on their own kind, apart from the
normal nutrients in the ocean.

Dead fish on the shores of other countries do not affect the fish
that is being sold in India and Sri Lanka these days.

If you have stopped eating fish these days may be you need not
contribute to any Tsunami fund at all. In that case praying for
them too is rather useless! On the one hand you contribute from
your pocket to save the fishing community. You feel good
about this. On the other you do not want their economy to roll.
You also obstruct other fishing communities contribute to
building up the affected of their own kind in the south of India
and Sri Lanka .

If you don't eat fish, fishing communities work to get for you,
you may be in the category of those who are building up forces
for an economic 'tsunami' that will lead to their condemnation
and slow death. I'm sure you do not want this to happen. Do not
let you contributions and prayers go in vain. Just keep eating
fish and you will bring our fishing communities to life again !!

Thank you so much on behalf of the beleaguered and traumatised
fishing communities of south India and Sri Lanka.

PLEASE SPREAD THIS WORD AND MESSAGE - Even if you are not a fish
eater!

Issued in the interest of fishing communities South Asia by:

Fr. Xavier Pinto, C.Ss.R.
South Asia Co-ordinator for the Apostleship of the Sea,
Member - International Fishing Committee, Vatican City.

[Goanet]Mutation for drug resistance in Indian malaria identified

2005-01-19 Thread Frederick Noronha
Malaria... a serious concern for Goa. Hardly getting the consistent attention
it deserves. FN

[AHMEDABAD] Scientists have identified the genetic mutation allowing the
parasite that causes fatal cerebral malaria in India to resist a widely used
drug. They warn that India could be becoming a new centre for the spread of
such resistance, and that it needs to reassess the way it treats the disease.

The scientists, based at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore,
studied the genetic make-up of the malaria parasites in the blood of 200 people
with cerebral malaria — the form of the disease affecting the brain that
accounts for almost 60 per cent of the 2.3 million cases of malaria in India
each year.

The researchers found that in 95 per cent of those infected, the parasite had a
mutation — termed SVMNT — in one of its genes. Malaria parasites with the
mutation are not affected by chloroquine, a drug commonly used to treat the
disease.

Govindrajan Padmanabhan, scientist emeritus at IISc, told the 92nd Indian
Science Congress in Ahmedabad last week that until now the mutation had not
been reported outside South America, including in India's neighbouring
South-East Asia, or in Africa where malaria is rampant.

[Goanet]Agro-Eco-Tourism seminar at Ela

2005-01-19 Thread karla
AGRO ECO TOURISM IN THE KONKAN
GOA.

A two-day National Seminar on Agro Eco-Tourism started on 19 January at
ICAR-Goa Research Complex at Ela-Velha Goa, a few metres away from the New
Pillory column just off the new NH-4 by-pass. Inaugurated by Goa's Tourism
Minister, Shri Matanhy Saldanha, the seminar is organised by the ICAR-Goa
based Asociation for Coastal Agricultural Research. It has attracted a
large number of Resource Persons and Delegates from all over India, which in
itself is no mean feat. The Power Point presentations by Haryana Tourism ,
Scientists, Eco-Tourism Entrepreneurs, Goa Forest Department[ Wild Life
Eco-Tourism Division] and even a Management student were of a high quality
indeed.

Dr.P. Chandr Shekar of MANAGE stated that Tourism is a major focus of the
Government of India. The Plan Budget for Tourism sector has been increased
more than nine-fold from Rs.325 crores in the IX Plan to Rs.2900 crores in
the X Plan. Tourism contributes 10.8% of the Foreign exchange, about 6% to
our national GDP and employs about 15.5 million people or roughly 12% of the
population directly in the sector. Still, India attracts only 2.7 million
foreign tourists[as in 2003] and this is a mere 0.38% of the global tourist
movement. There is definitely a scope for improvement. The annual increment
of 10.1% in the flow of foreign tourists is just not enough.

A third [35.7 %] of the foreign tourists come to India to see its culture.
The Conde Nast Traveller lists India as currently one of the Top Ten tourist
destinations. Agriculture sector can absorb a sizeable number of persons for
tourism in the village mileu where the tradition is of Aditi Deva Bhava or
'The Guest is like God'. The urban tourists enjoy tranquility of remote
beaches. They can easily be introduced to the tranquility of the villages and
rural hamlets.

The World Tourism Organization[WTO] indicates that 'culture' is a key
component of the product on offer in 'Rural Tourism', which is characterised
by personalized contact and a physical experience of the countryside. Eco
Tourism is an unobtrusive enjoyment of Natural beauty as it exists. No form
of Eco-Tourism is possible without sensitivity to the Natural Resources and
the environment. Agro-Eco Tourism is a Service Enterprise with the
community and the farmer as important stake holders and beneficiaries
thereof.

There were presentations on the Coorg/Kodagu Coffee Planters' Home Stay
Tourism in neighbouring Karnataka that fetches annual incomes of Rs.5
crores, of Agro Tourism in Haryana[ Hari -Anna, the land of green fields],
of Desert Tourism in Rajasthan that annually attracts 20% of the Foreign
tourist inflows and the potential Mango Tourism in the Konkan.

The early morning sessions of the second day include a lot of details on
agricultural component of Agro Eco Tourism, including biodiversity, crop and
animal husbandry, organic farming and EM technology. At 12 noon the
discussion will shift to socio-economic analysis of eco tourism, role of
NGOs, impact on rural development and cyberworld in promotion of agro eco
tourism. Post lunch there will be a panel discussion and open house which
will, interestingly, be chaired by a successful farmer- entrepreneur
Chandrashekar Bhadsavle from Malegaon,Maharashtra. The Director of ICAR-Goa,
Director of Agriculture-Goa and farmer-entrepreneurs from Goa will be the
panelists.

Viva Goa.

I am deeply shocked, disgusted, and very very upset to

Dr.Verenkar was our family physician, and a friend to

had a very caring nature and always put his patients

you entered his cabin..and that would set the tone.
One felt totally reassured with him. His affable
nature and kindness were his trademark qualities which
won him friends from ALL walks of life. I can't
imagine WHICH COWARD had the nerve to carry out this
act in broad daylight!!
Dr.Verenkar's passing away has left an indelible mark

accept this loss.
This is a cowardly and shameful act!! What is our

May God give you the strength to carry this cross.

P.S. I have been extremely emotional while writing
this..and this comes from the bottom of my heart!

It does seem difficult to believe such things happen in Goa where the double
murder in Tivim in 1972 was a sensation as murders had never taken place in
free Goa till that date. Murders by the local citizenry was unheard of
during the Portuguese regime that dealt very harshly with crime[other than
acts of war and attrition of the colonial regime]. Goa seems to be getting
increasingly literate and increasingly uncivilized and intolerant.

[Goanet]questions for SUNDAY'S MEETING OF RIBANDAR PARISHIONERS

2005-01-19 Thread jose colaco
From: Aires Rodrigues [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The meeting will be held at the Ribandar Church on Sunday 23rd January
2005 at 10.30 am and will be attended by Fr Luciano Fernandes,
representative of Goa's Archbishop Rev. Felipe Neri Ferrao who has been
asked to inquire into the parishioners complaints of financial and moral
irregularities at the Ribandar Church.

Please send your questions and suggestions by Saturday 22nd January. If you
are not from Ribandar there is no reason as to why you cannot send your
views and ideas across. I am sure my friend Dr. Jose Colaco from Bahamas
would have a couple. Shall place them all before Fr. Luciano Fernandes.

I expect Sunday's meeting to be very stormy but with faith, conviction and
decorum let us uphold our religion.

My questions:
(1) Is it true that Fr. Luciano will attend ?
IF HE DOES
(2) When will the Church do a follow up on the Rape Threat complaint?
(3) Did Aires Rodrigues make any telephone calls to the nuns between 8:30
and 9.30 p.m - on August 5, 2004 ?

(4) If soapproximately How Many, and WHY ?
look forward to the report from Ribandar
good wishes

[Goanet]UK Company to salvage River Princess

2005-01-19 Thread Reuven Proenca
To pay state govt Rs 81 lakh; Ship not to be broken up

By Reuven Proenca

PANAJI: The state government has finalized its plans to salvage the
ill-fated River Princess with a UK-based company being awarded the contract
after it submitted the winning bid, though Tourism Department officials
refused to divulge any information.

According to reliable sources, the British company Crosschem International
Limited (CIL) outbid an Indian company, which was the only competitor, in
the race to salvage the ship that ran aground off Candolim in June 2000.

It is learnt, however, that the Indian company~Rs bid called for the state
government to pay for the salvage process. Interestingly the Dutch salvage
company, Smit International, - which has long been associated with efforts
to salvage the ship ~V did not take part in the bidding process.

CIL, as part of its bid, has offered to pay the state government a sum of Rs
81 lakhs to salvage, refloat and take possession of the ship. The state will
not have to shell out any money towards the salvage effort since the
ownership of the vessel will pass from the state to the salvagers.

It is learnt that the authorities have clearly informed CIL that the ship
should not be broken up in Goa and that no waste should be allowed into the
water. Apparently, the plan is for CIL to first patch up the holes that had
been cut into the hull of the vessel and then efforts would be made to
refloat the ship.

Sources said that the decision to accept Crosschem as the winning bidder was
taken some time ago but the paperwork, finalizing the plans, were delayed
due to problems in transferring the funds from the UK to India.

However, the Tourism Department is expected to announce the deal in the next
few days. When contacted, Tourism Director Elvis Gomes declined to comment
on the matter and would only say the process was ~Son track.~T Other senior
Tourism officials also remained tightlipped.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that CIL has already started taking preliminary
steps to prepare for the salvage process. At least four shack owners, whose
establishments were located on the beach opposite the grounded vessel, have
been asked to move to alternate locations and have been offered compensation
to do so.

In addition, CIL officials have also contacted local suppliers located along
the coastal belt for supplies of food, water, transport and other basic
necessities that will be required by their team. The company is also

Thanks for the article. My comments

You forgot one thing: many winners end up as bitches or whatever you would
like to call them in Hindi films(apologies for that term, but that's what
they have mostly been reduced to!).

Beauty pagents are among the most undignified things that are organised and
shamefully an ever increasing number of women participate in them. What are
they about: of dirctly or indirectly portraying women's bodies as cheap,
sexually desirable objects of male lust.

They parade in revealing costumes that decent and dignified women should not
be wearing. When will they realise that their bodies are not meant for this.
The greatest and only casualty of the pagents is the grace, self-respect,
chastity and dignity of a woman.

I see no reason why these contests should not be banned in the interests of
women and impressionable young minds. Organisers have only one thing in
mind: making money at any cost and covering their acts with those cliched
statements like: judging intelligence(stupidity or dim wit would be a
better description rather)beauty with a cause, fighting against AIDS. blah
blah blah.

And our Indian beauties are best known for those Mother Teresa wa nabe
quotes at pagents: they sound artificial and fake - like straight out of a
Who wants to be a hypocrite or should I say KBH(Kaun Banega Hypocrite). The
less said about what happens at the Carnival or on dance floors the better.
The Catholic Church in Goa should issue a position statement condemning
this. There are clear guidelines on what women should not be wearing in
Church and at religious celebrations. Women should educate themselves and
prove to men what they are what they are wo

I am in the process of compiling traditional Goan Catholic names which I
believe all children should have in the future if we are to preserve our
identity. It should take another few days and will appreciate if anyone can
help me get the stuff arranged in alphabetical order(including each alphabet
chronologically).

I belive there may be some programme to do that. I have tracked obituaries
for the last 3-6 years, but the list will always be incomplete. New
additions are most welcome. The final list(with constant additions) can be
circulated on the net, in our churches and other fora. I happen to be one of
many with a wrong first name(I mean a non-Goan Catholic name)! We need to be
proud of our Goan Cathjolic heritage and preserve it at all cost.

Thanks,

What's wrong with looking beautiful? What is so bad about being

Leading lights from the diaspora show paths to further
progress

From Eugene Correia

MUMBAI: While European Parliament MP, Nina Gill,
thought people of Indian origin have “spiced up the
world”, UN Under-Secretary, Shashi Tharoor, felt that
the term NRI meant “Never Relinquished India” and
telecommunications entrepreneur, Sam Pitroda, opined
that “corporate successes” is a given but a
“generation change” is needed in the social sector.
They were taking part in the plenary session of New
Initiatives for the Diasora which was chaired by Lord
Navnit Dhalakia, with other diaspora panelists, Dato
Seri S. Samy Vellu, Malaysia’s Minister of Works, A.R.
Bundhun, Vice-President, Mauritius, Dr. Basdeo Pandey,
Leader of the Opposition, Trnidad and Tobago, Dr P.
Mohamed Ali, MD, Galfar Engineering Contracting,
Sultanate of Oman, and Vijay Amritraj, President,
First Serve Entertainment, USA.
To show the extent to what level the influence of
Indian diaspora has penetrated into the workplace in
the world, Shashi Tharoor remarked that British curry
houses employ more workers than in the iron, steel,
coal, shipping and mining industries combined.
It’s one example of how the Empire can strike back, he
quipped, drawing a big laugh from the crowd.
He said that events like the PBD were necessary for
Indians to voice their concerns and share their
values. “Sometimes the value of a conference lies in
conferring,” he added.
Tharoor said that overseas Indians have contributed
richly in diverse fields both in India and where they
live and that they should be accorded the right to
vote.
Providing the example of Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT) as a “brand name” recognized as much
as “MIT”, the UN official said India is no longer
known as a land of “begging bowls and snake-charmers”.

He remarked that for far too long it was believed that
the only country Indians cannot succeed is in India
He began his address saying light-heartedly but
carrying a thought-provoking commentary on India’s
secularism that where can one see a Muslim President
appointing a Sikh Prime Minister made room for him by
a Roman Catholic politician..
Nina Gill urged the overseas Indian youth to get
involved in politics and gave brief details of her own
rise in politics. “There a few and far in between in
politics,” she added.
She said she refused to be taken as a second-class
citizen because of her race. “I was articulate and I
set up an organization to fight back.
Indian families encouraged their children to excel in
the professions and, therefore, very few of these
overseas Indian youth take up public office, she
remarked.
Sam Pitroda said he was ridiculed as one of the
“computer boys” when he tried to usher in the
communications revolution, but the state of the
country has shown his vision has succeeded.
He, however, warned that the technology success
shouldn’t make India sit back and relax but work
harder to provide similar success in the social
sector. Besides the economic reforms, there must be
judicial, administrative and political reforms, he
demanded.
He called upon the government to build at least ten
large cities in fresh urban setting, while
recommending a 10-point program to elevate poverty and
improve growth.

Citizenship for all overseas Indians

From Eugene Correia

MUMBAI: The overseas delegates to the third Pravasi
Bharatiya Divas burst into a thunderous applause when
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared the
government’s decision to extend dual citizenship to
people of Indian origin living in all countries.
As the applause from more than 2,500 delegates and
invitees to the opening ceremony at the S.N. Kohli
ground in Navynagar, South Mumbai, died down, Singh
added a condition to the qualification, saying that
only those who migrated after Jan. 26, 1950 would be
eligible and if only their host countries allowed.
The dual nationality was first offered to overseas
Indians in eight countries, including US and Canada,
and then eight more countries were added.
The immediate reaction to this clause was not seen in
the packed audience, but during the following two days
of the event, many overseas Indians were not sure how
it would work out.
The PM asked the government and the bureaucracy be
forgiven because “little has happened to implement
this declaration of intent” since the dual citizenship
was announced at last year’s meet.
“I do hope that a day will come when every single
overseas Indian who wishes to secure Indian
citizenship will actually be able to do so,” he said
enthusiastically.
He asked for more time and called for patience from
overseas Indians till the government creates a
user-friendly form instead of the three-layered one.
Singh said that the government may consider using
“smart card” for security reasons, and that he has
requested concerned ministries to “spell out the
benefits of registering overseas citizenship.”

costume, there is a

consumer - charter of demands for cuncolim

BY ARMSTRONG VAZ
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is for the benefit of my friends from Cuncolim using the net to get
across the message of what is happening in Cuncolim.
Last Sunday for the first time I attended a meeting of the Cuncolim consumer
and civic forum held at maria bambina Convent hs Cuncolim.

The meeting discussed several topics
BANKS- The topics discussed where the functioning of the banks- the ratio of
disbursement of loans and deposits by the different banks in Cuncolim and the
functioning and the service offered by the banks to the customers came in for
close scrutiny.

Pharmacy – the functioning of the pharmacies in Cuncolim were also discussed
and whether any night pharmacis are functioning in Cuncolim.

POSt OFFICE-- the conduct and functioning of the post man and other personnel
at Cuncolim post office was also discussed.

PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE BALLI
The services offered at Balli health centre will come under a survey to be
conducted by the consumer civic forum.

Other issues were Gas Services, Telephone services, electricity services.

On cooking Gas- LPG, consumers expressed the need to have more safety
workshops through out Cuncolim.

On telephone services it was informed that consumers should look out for
defect in their connection from the pole to the residence.

On electricity it was suggested that the department frequently carried the
exercise of cutting trees branches and other plants obstructing or likely to
obstruct the disruption of electricity supply to the consumers.

THE MEETING WAS ALSO INFORMED ABOUT TRHE GAXETTE NOTIFICATION OF new speed
breakers coming up in Cuncolim.

Villagers however informed the meeting that there is also a need to improve on
the existing speed breakers and no sign boards or marking are present near the
existing speed breakers near maria bambina convent Cuncolim and near Our lady
of health hs Cuncolim besides near corporation bank Murida.

Enclosed is by dream plan for Cuncolim and if any other ideas spring up I will
send you the same. I will also consult with my friends and adds the
facilities for sports, leisure and children related activities in the second
email which will posted to you in one or two weeks time.

Also the photo graphs of the existing speed breakers without any sign boards
and marking will be email in another two days time.

MY DREAMS FOR CUNCOLIM.
TRAFFIC PLAN—

There is no system of parking for buses passing through Cuncolim from
Canacona, karwar and making a stop over at Cuncolim to collect passenger in
the absence of a bus stand Buses stop by the road side to collect passengers
on the national high way no. 17.
The net result is absolute traffic chaos on the national highway at Cuncolim
market.

TOURIST TAXI
There is a need to have a bus stand preferably near the new football ground at
kalata Cuncolim. Need to have a tourist taxi stand and for motorcycle pilots
at Cuncolim bazaar.

MOTORCYCLE PILOTS
The current situation is motorcycle pilots operate from two places at Cuncolim
one opposite the keni Pharmacy and another group near the four road junction
at Cuncolim bazaar.

TAXI STAND – There is a need for a taxi stand as the situation stands private
taxi drivers who are plying their trade from opposite Keni Pharmacy are
passing their vehicles on both sides of the road leading to Dandora from
Cuncolim bazaar leading to reduction of the width of the road and causing
traffic problems.

There is a need to have a taxi stand at the disposal of the taxi owners to
play their trade.

PARKING ARRANGEMENTS AND TRAFFIC FLOW DURING SUNDAY MASS

It is observed that on Sunday’s additional inflow of new hawkers selling
different fruit items, vegetable and other food commodities and other items
make it to the market. The hawkers are lined up on the road leading from
Cuncolim church and leading to the maddicotto chapel. So it is closure of the
road for residents of maddicotto Osnimaddem, gutton , Molanguinim, zuzegal who
after the Sunday mass where passing through the road freely without any
encumbrance for the last several decades . The residents now have to move to
the already crowded national highway and connect back to the road at
maddicotto chapel leading to traffic chaos.

Is the closure of the road authorized by a gazette notification on a
particular day. Has any one got details about the same?

People attending religious ceremonies on sunday cannot take their vehicles to
the church compound. Instead People have to park their vehicles on both sides
of the road leading to Dandora from the Dandora side. People attending church
from the other three side attending mass who are able to take the vehicles to
the church compound then have to literally slog out to come out of the
traffic inferno created by the short sightness of the Cuncolim municipal
council.

On Sunday Foot path and roads are being blocked to accommodate additional
