One can certainly argue that the caste system has been detrimental to social and intellectual progress in India, but claiming that Indians did not shine in any era in comparison with the rest of the world is being slapdash with history. A very good argument can be made that at least until the 12th century Indian philosophy, literature, medicine, mathematics and astronomy were on par with, and in some respects, better than the rest of the world. I just finished reading a nice book on the history of intellectual progress in India by the noted astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar, entitled The Scientific Edge - The Indian Scientist from Vedic to Modern Times. I recommend it to anybody who is interested in such things. The refreshing thing about this book is that it is unusually objective. It gives credit where credit is due, but also debunks nutty nonsense such as the so-called Vedic Mathematics, Vedic Astrology and Vaastushastra. Narlikar mentions several genuinely shining achievements of Indian science and mathematics, especially during the Golden Age of 450 1150 A.D. Regarding the caste systems role in stunting progress, he makes the much more reasonable point that it deprived Indian science of intellectual input from the vast majority of its population which was deemed to be unworthy of engaging in scholarly pursuits. Dear Mr. Naik, Good evening from here. It is very good to hear from you. I have a few of questions for you. The only reason I ask, is because I know not the answers. 1. Do you have factual proof to support your allegations? 2. If so, have you referred this matter to the CBI for urgent action? 3. Are you prepared to make this VERIFIABLE information open to the voting public? 4. Do you believe that members of the Goa Congress Party siphoned off any public funds during their previous tenure? 5. [Goanet]A THOUGHT FOR ALL
Once upon a time there was a rich King who had four wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the finest of delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best. He also loved the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to neighboring kingdoms. However, he feared that one day she would leave him for another. He also loved his 2nd wife. She was his confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could confide in her, and she would help him get through the difficult times. The King's 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife. Although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her! One day, the King fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of his luxurious life and wondered, I now have four wives with me, but when I die, I'll be all alone. Thus, he asked the 4th wife, I have loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company? No way!, replied the 4th wife , and she walked away without another word. Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart. The sad King then asked the 3rd wife, I have loved you all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company? No!, replied the 3rd wife. Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to remarry! His heart sank and turned cold. He then asked the 2nd wife, I have always turned to you for help and you've always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company? I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!, replied the 2nd wife. At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave. Her answer struck him like a bolt of lightning, and the King was devastated. Then a voice called out: I'll go with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go. The King looked up, and there was his first wife. She was very skinny as she suffered from malnutrition and neglect. Greatly grieved, the King said, I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance! In truth, we all have the 4 wives in our lives: Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it will eave us when we die. Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it will all go to others. Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. And our 1st wife is our Soul. Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world. However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of us that will follow us to the throne of God and continue with us throughout Eternity. Thought for the day: Remember, when the world pushes you to your knees, you're in the perfect position to pray. CYRIL
[Goanet]Vasco stun Mohun Bagan
Vasco stun Mohun Bagan February 25, 2005 20:31 IST Vasco, Goa, stubbornly defended a first half lead to shock Mohun Bagan 1-0 in a ninth National Football League match in Kolkata on Friday. The visitors scored the all-important goal in the 25th minute through Alex Ambrose and then staved off a sustained Bagan onslaught to earn their first victory in the tournament and boost their points tally to five from nine matches. Alex Ambrose's goal in a mediocre match at the Salt Lake stadium was, however, controversial, with the Bagan defenders claiming that Denis Cabral, who provided the final pass to Ambrose, was off-side. Cabral, who received the ball from Menino Fernandes, set up Ambrose with a short pass and the latter re-directed the ball into the net on the run, sparking off protests from the local team. Bagan, who have 11 points from 10 games, enjoyed the lion's share of ball possession and maintained overall supremacy for most part of the match but failed to restore parity despite getting some good opporutnities. Vasco goalkeeper Virender Singh, who was adjudged man of the match, proved a big stumbling block for the locals as he kept his cool to thwart several Bagan offensives. The woodwork also stood in the way of a Bagan goal in the 76th minute when Brazilian Beto's back-header following a Rennedy Singh corner crashed into the post and rebounded into play. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

[Goanet]NCM seeks ministers intervention on film 'Sins'
Film: NCM seeks Minister's intervention By Our Special Correspondent NEW DELHI, FEB. 23. The National Commission for Minorities today urged the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, S. Jaipal Reddy, to delay the release of the controversial film, Sins, till the concerns of the Christian community ? which is objecting to certain portions of it ? are addressed. The NCM chairman, Tarlochan Singh, wrote to Mr. Reddy requesting him to stop the release of the film for a few days and get it examined at your level in order to satisfy the sentiments of the Christian minority community. The NCM decided to intervene in the matter after the Archbishop of Delhi, Vincent M. Concessao, lodged a complaint with the Commission about some portions in the film. Mr. Singh said the complaint was that the film hurt the sentiments of Christians. With similar complaints being sent to the Commission against many serials and films by other minority communities, the NCM has decided to meet the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The NCM, he said, had organised a similar meeting with the then Chairperson of CBFC three years ago and secured an assurance that portions which offended the sentiments of different communities would be deleted. Catholics in Mumbai have over the past week raised objections to film- maker Vinod Pande's `attempt' to sensationalise the so-called fictional sexual escapades of a priest in Sins, due for release on Friday. Their contention was that the portrayal of an ordained priest in such light would hurt the sentiments of Christians. http://www.hindu.com/2005/02/24/stories/2005022401210900.htm Disclaimer : This message may contain confidential, proprietary or legally privileged information. Mr. Naik said that on every development project, BJP leaders ensured a cut of minimum 30% through various modalities and, some of the projects were undertaken more for the purposes of cuts and commissions than for the benefit of the people. Mr. Naik said that according to him around 50 major cases involving offences of criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery ,misappropriation and not less than 200 other cases of the same nature involving lesser funds and smaller properties will be discovered if 4 years of BJP rule , is examined objectively and scrutinized with standard methods of calculations and accountancy. Mr. Naik said that the new Government should not only order CBI inquiry in each of such major cases but, should also, constitute a Commission of Inquiry with broad terms of reference to inquire into the functioning of the Government in violation of constitutional provisions, local statutes and business rules of the government and for suggesting ways and means for providing an in-built mechanism to thwart defiance of rule of law on the part of an administration. Mr. Naik said BJP's theory of Power through vitamin M made the party and their leaders go on a spree to achieve their 'goals' and 'extract' vitamin 'M', left and right. However, BJP leaders were shrewd enough to distract peoples' mind from their own black deeds by making corruption charges and instituting inquiry commissions against congress leaders, Mr. Naik said. Mr. Naik said that BJP invested as many as 90 lakhs to buy centrally air- conditioned office premises for their party to bring in some sort of 'purity' in their deeds by saying that they spend their booty for the party , when in fact, what is spent for party assets or activities is only a tip of the iceberg. Mr. Naik said that the object behind former BJP government undertaking constructions like new patto bridge, constructions on the banks of mandovi river and constructions like multiplex, illegally, in defiance with construction and environmental laws was that, the BJP wanted to make hay when sun shines and, therefore, perhaps might have thought that if they were to wait for procedural formalities, the scope for commissions would get minimized. Mr. Naik said that the former Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar's another venture is going to be a saffron daily to be published from Panaji in the next few months . This daily's objective is to project Mr. Parrikar's image to the extent of giving an impression to the BJP workers that without Mr. Parrikar BJP does not exist in Goa, Mr. Naik added. Whether BJP is able to see the game-plan of Mr.Parrikar, time alone will indicate, Mr. Naik added. (SHANTARAM NAIK)

[Goanet]Churchill rally to hold Fransa
Churchill rally to hold Fransa February 25, 2005 21:03 IST A late resurgence by Churchill Brothers enabled them to hold Fransa Pax to a 1-1 draw in a 10th round match in the National Football League in Margao, Goa, on Friday. Fransa took the lead in the 50th minute through a penalty by Ambalath Sulieman. Churchill equalised in the 84th minute, when Marcos Pereira headed home a cross by Sujoy Dutta from the right. With this draw, Fransa took their tally to 14 points from ten matches and remain fourth on the league table. Churchill are placed 11th with six points from nine matches. Marcos Pereira was declared Man of the match. In a barren first half, confined mostly to the midfield, Fransa had three chances but could not convert them. They took the lead in the 50th minute through a penalty. Hardeep Saini floated the ball from the right from a free-kick to Benjamin Ansah, whose goal bound shot from inside the box was handled by defender Usmano Hussein. Referee Chamchuk Lama pointed to the dreaded spot. Sulieman made no mistake with the kick. The goal spurred Fransa. They made a series of moves and could have increased the lead but first Sebastiao Endro and later Joseph Ogor failed to direct their shots on target from close. Fransa also had the misfortune of seeing Benjamin Ansah's free-kick hit the bar. Churchill found their rhythm in the last quarter of the match as they regrouped and went all out. Ater missing two close chances they equalised in the 84th minute when Sujoy Dutta, from the right, crossed the ball to an unmarked Marcos Pereira, who nodded home from close. Fransa nearly scored in the dying minutes but keeper Vinay Singh effected a good save, fisting over the ball after a solo effort by Louis Aniweta. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

[Goanet]NEWS: Pope Rushed To Hospital, Doctors Satisfied With His Response To Surgery
Pope Rushed To Hospital, Doctors Satisfied With His Response To Surgery By SAR NEWS VATICAN CITY (SAR NEWS) -- Pope John Paul II has undergone a surgery successfully, hours after being rushed to hospital for the second time in a month following a relapse of his flu, February 24. A top Italian Government official said that the doctors were very satisfied with the way the 84-year-old pontiff withstood tracheotomy (surgery of the windpipe) on February 25. Mr. Gianni Letta, a top aide to Prime Minister of Italy, Mr. Silvio Berlusconi, has visited the hospital and spoken with the Pope's physicians. A papal spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, said that the Pope was taken to the Rome Hospital for necessary specialised assistance and further tests. He was taken to the clinic by ambulance at 10.45 a.m. local time, February 24, the papal officials said. Mr. Letta said the Pope had joked with doctors before the 30-minute operation, which was intended to help him breathe. Doctors are very satisfied with how the Pope withstood surgery and with the first few hours of the immediate post-operative period, Mr. Letta added. Mr. Letta said doctors had told the pontiff it would be a small operation, to which he had replied: Depends what you mean by small. Doctors said complete healing could be expected in healthy patients within about two weeks. However, given the Pope's advanced age and his Parkinson's disease, the doctors will be particularly concerned about the possibility of an infection. The Pope's surprise admission to hospital has shocked the Roman Catholic Church. It is likely to renew debate among cardinals and Vatican advisers about his ability to continue to lead the Church. Cardinal Camillo Ruini, head of the Italian Bishops' Conference, has called on the faithful to pray for the Pope, to keep him in his mission, for the good of Rome, the Church and humanity. [Goanet]SAR News: While Catholics Criticize, Priest Defends Goa Catholic Legislator's Support To BJP
While Catholics Criticize, Priest Defends Goa Catholic Legislator's Support To BJP By Bosco de Sousa Eremita PANAJI, Goa (SAR) -- A Redemptorist priest has ratified a Goan Catholic legislator's move to support the ousted Bharatija Janta Party (BJP) government, stating that his action is in the right direction. Father Desmond de Souza, former executive secretary of the Office for Human Development of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) said, After the Congress government, which has been useless (over the years), any government ought to be given a chance. The BJP-led government was dismissed by Governor S C Jamir, a Christian, on Feb. 2 after some 20 plainclothes policemen evicted a member from the Goa Legislative Assembly seconds before confidence vote. The eviction was seen as a manipulative effort to win the trust vote after the BJP was reduced to a minority. The state which has been under Congress for over 17 years has witnessed lethargic progress in comparison to dramatic infrastructure development during the BJP-led government's four years. However, with the BJP assuming power, communal strife also made a mark in the state. Father De Souza who has been active in public movements for decades and supported several public causes initiated by Saldanha, said that Saldanha's earlier declaration of extending issue-based support to BJP was agreeable to him, but several months later when Saldanha joined the government as a cabinet member, he was unhappy. I was unhappy with that development because once you are with the government you cannot criticize it. The support by Saldanha to the BJP has irked the 1.3 million Catholics of the state who feel that their legislator has let them down. The BJP-led government has over the years been instrumental in sidelining the catholic community for jobs, promotions, even had attempted to cancel Good Friday as public holiday. The government also brought out a controversial VCD on Goa's freedom struggle, where Catholic priests were projected as members of a mafia group, who were instrumental in destroying Hindu temples in the name of Inquisition. The state was under colonial Portugal (1510-1961). Centuries of western influence have prompted the BJP to force Hindu thinking amongst primary schools students. During its regime it handed over 50 primary government schools to Hindu groups, including the RSS, the fundamentalist arm of the Hindus. The priest who has known Saldanha at close quarters said that even though Saldanha failed to be critical of the government on several pressing issues in the Legislative Assembly, he worked silently with a personal approach with the chief minister and got several issues resolved including revoking cancellation of Good Friday as public holiday. He said, Saldanha's support to BJP was justified because the Congress were discredited. Refering to the attack on Christain institutions by Hindu fundamentalists, the priest pointed out that a clear link of Hindu fundamentalists forces working against the Catholics, with the backing of the chief minister, could not be clearly established, except for the production of the controversial VCD. It's like blaming the Bishop for an individual priest doing something. Above all, the BJP government was not rabidly communal after the Catholics, and in such a situation Matanhy's decision to support the BJP is safe. He said, Saldanha was not elected as a Christian representative to defend Catholic community, rather to do good for his people. I think we ought not to look at him as a Catholic but as a person there to ensure that justice is done for the welfare of the entire state. He said, Saldanha has ensured that the draft of the Domestic Worker's Bill is forwarded to BJP legislators for perusal, despite the fact that he is against non-locals.

GL It was approved yesterday and with the highest qualification an MPhil dissertation of a Portuguese lady researcher, Susana Costa Pinho (with MA in Political Science and working presently as Journalist) on the Representatives of Portuguese India in the Portuguese Parliament (1822-1892) I had the privilege of guiding this research, and the juri of examinors consisted of a Portuguese lady anthropologist-historian, Dr. Cristiana Bastos (of the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon) and Prof. Narana Coissoró (Long-standing Goan MP in the Portuguese Parliament, and Professor of Political Science and Law at the ISCPS (Institute for Higher Studies in Political and Social Sciences, Technical University of Lisbon). Both are conversant with the socio-political situation in Portuguese India during the period covered by the research in question. The dissertation makes fresh contribution to our knowledge of the theme, and we could have for the first time a comparative picture of who were the various MPs and how they performed in the Portuguese parliament. Among the MPs were natives, mestiços and the ethnic Portuguese. Nearly 35 of in all for the period covered. Their performance for the benefit of Goa was not restricted only to the native MPs. The dissertation concentrated upon the natives and presents many details of the outstanding performance of Bernardo Peres da Silva, Antonio Caetano Pacheco, João Xavier de Sousa Trindade, Estevam Jeremias Mascarenhas, Bernardo Francisco da Costa. Only very little of this was known from the existing historiography. I was wondering if anyone on Goanet would take the initiative of publishing an English version of this research. It permits us to grasp the hard process and the early steps of the Goans in western political institutions. It would be a pity if this research remained confined to Portugal and unknown to Goans who are trying to understand Goa's march towards democratic institutions. Whatever the negative colonial political experiences that are repeated *ad nauseam* on the goanet, there can be no doubts that the exposure of Goans to western political ideas and institutions much earlier than the rest of India has had its positive value and prepared Goans to face globalization with much confidence and success. [Goanet]Caste Studies - Relevant Sampling
Cornel wrote: In all my many posts on the topic of Catholic Goans and caste, you will find that, it is very unlikely I personally used the term Brahmins upon whom to focus. I always used, in my preferred terminogy, the term-- the casteists. This is because I am entirely aware that casteism is many layered and it would be entirely wrong and uninformed to focus only on any one named group e.g. the Brahmins. However, when quoting the excerpts collected, the word Brahmin, several times, and Chardo once, inevitably crept in because, for reasons of authenticity, the data had to be presented, as given to me by the informants. I was quite aware of a potential problem here but I hope you can see that I am quite clear that casteism, in its many guises, is my central concern and not a specific group or groups. --- Dear Cornel, I appreciate your having taken the time to explain to me the reason for what appears as a anti-Brahmin bias in your studies. I suggest that you take a larger sampling, and from more varied sections of the populace, if you wish to truly get results that mirror the real situation. Interviewing only caste-conscious, and obviously prejudiced, Goan Catholics will naturally skew your interpretation in only one direction. If you could get in touch with Prof. Alito Sequeira at Goa University you could maybe access his in-depth studies on the caste phenomenon among Goan Catholics. Either way best of luck in your studies. I hope the results will be available soon and in a format that is comprehensible to non-academic, non-intellectuals such as myself. Cheers! Cecil =

[Goanet]Free or Fair ? Moira Panchayat elections
- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660 Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Press Clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/ --- - Free or Fare -- Your editorial of February 16 highlights the very sorry political mess brought about by power-crazy MLAs in Goa. The Parrikar government tried to subvert the ZP electoral process with an absurd ordinance in defiance of the spirit of Panchayati Raj. It failed but not for lack of trying. Interestingly, on the very day after the fall of his government, guess who tried to high jack the elections for the posts of Sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch in V.P. Moira? Here is the sordid story as uncovered by volunteers of Moira Civic Consumer Forum: On 31st January, The Director of Panchayats issued his order to the BDO Bardez to hold elections on February 14 to fill the vacant posts. This Order was received by the Panchayat on February 2nd. On February 3, the Director, without any explanation, actually faxed a message to the BDO that his order stands withdrawn! When the Director was questioned, all that he would say was that such things happen when there is change in government. Why do you not ask the Chief Minister? he said. In turn, the CM expressed shock: I know nothing about elections in Moira Panchayat. Even the Deputy CM took an interest in the matter: He questioned the Director who eventually revealed that it was a minister without portfolio who took the initiative to delay the elections in Moira! We in the villages are trying to weed out the rot of corrupt practices and here we have two governments, one in a shambles, licking its wounds, and the other barely tottering to survive. What is their undue interest in a tiny village with an electorate of barely 3000 voters? The message of Moira Civic Consumer Forum to all the other village panchayats of Goa is this: The government is not interested in village development. It has its own corrupt agenda. Confront the misfits. Reject them. Choose only people of integrity. The Director of Panchayats should never allow his office to be used for the manipulation of Panchayat elections. [Goanet]Re: Charter flights
Afra Dias commented on Dabolim Airport being one which charters land and no other flights land other than internal Indian flights. This was the situation in the UK for a number of years when the regional airports tended to handle the charter traffic and the main London airports handled to scheduled flights. As the years go on the regional airports started to take on more and more schedule flights and one would have hoped Goa would do the same. This is perhaps not the case but I do see an Indian Airlines flight goes from Goa - Mumbai and then to the Gulf. Perhaps this is the start of a change in policy Dave -- David Futers [EMAIL PROTECTED] Newbiggin by the Sea http://www.futers.org Northumberland NE64 6NL UNITED KINGDOM [Feb 24] The desired change in policy may take years to materialise. A deep look at the Goa aviation scene would reveal that the military (Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard) are taking a very obstructionist stance at Dabolim by dint of their sheer incumbency position in combination with the holy cow status accorded to security matters. Their opponents, the South Goa hoteliers lobby, is equally obstructionist as far as Goa's overall aviation scene is concerned beacuse their opposition to the military presence in Dabolim is combined with a virulent opposition to the plan to have an international airport at Mopa. This is probably because of the severe locational disadvantage they foresee if the charter flights begin to land at a place which is some three or four times the present distance to their properties. The Civil Aviation Ministry has been content with securing on average an additional acre of land each year for the last 40 years to cope with the growing civilian traffic pressures at Dabolim. The Goa government and honourable MPs seem paralysed by other well known preoccupations to provide any leadership whatsoever in resolving the imbroglio to the satisfaction of travellers to and from Goa. So the chicken or the egg situation (vis a vis which comes first: the pull back of the military or the explosive growth of traffic at Dabolim) will continue for the foreseeable future.
[Goanet]The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh
The enclosed item clearly shows that the BJP has no respect for the father of our nation. However, when it comes to issues like the MF Hussain's depiction of Hindu gods and goddesses they will cry hoarse about maligning Hinduism. Sachin Phadte Cong workers attack Alliance Francaise February 24, 2005 BHOPAL, DHNS: http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/feb242005/n4.asp A group of Congressmen, led by a former MLA and a former city Mayor, ransacked the office of Alliance Francaise de Bhopal, a French-teaching institution, to protest against the humiliation heaped on Mahatma Gandhi. The Congressmen were sore that a painting exhibition put up at the institute depicted, among other things, the Mahatma wearing a suit and standing before a fried Chicken shop. Another picture showed Gandhiji holding a liquor bottle in his hands. The pictures were part of a solo exhibition of sketch artist Vishwajyoti Ghosh. The Congressmen barged into the office, tore up the offending pictures and set them afire. The director of the institute Sten Le Berrigaud was also manhandled. The institute chose not to report the matter to the police, but has only sought police protection. Former Bhopal MLA P C Sharma and former city Mayor Ms Vibha Patel have blamed the BJP government of the state for allowing a national icon to be ridiculed by foreigners. They also referred to a government-sponsored book fair in Bhopal where anti-Gandhi and anti-Gandhism books were on display. Among others, controversial books written by Gandhiji assassin Nathuram Godses brother were on sale in the fair. The matter was also raised in the state assembly where Opposition members castigated the government for maligning and ridiculing Mahatma Gandhi. Chief Minister Babulal Gaur, while accepting that the books were indeed sold, said that as the fair was over and as the allegedly offending books had been published and printed in Delhi, the Congress government of Delhi should take action. The ball is in your court, Mr Gaur told agitated Congressmen. _ Get married the quickest way on BharatMatrimony.com http://www.bharatmatrimony.com/cgi-bin/bmclicks1.cgi?74 SMS ur Life Partner
[Goanet]Re: New research on * Goan MP's in the Portuguese Parliament
Dear Bernado, Your reply is once again of the usual flippant nature, pretending that you have already read everything. Instead of making a generic statement that there we many on goanet who wrote on the issue of slavery, could you name one single contributor who was as bold (atrevido as the Portuguese would say) as to say that We were all slaves for 5 centuries (quoting your message of 23 Feb 2005 on goanet)? We and all implies something very different from the existence and traffic of slavery. As for slavery in Goa till its official abolition in the mid 19th century, I presume that you have already read about it in my writings! If you did not, you are one of those ignorantes atrevidos. As to what I have to say about slavery today, I would leave it to non-historians like you. I did not know also that historians need to defend any truth as you seem to suggest. They can only help to reconstruct the past to the best of their ability and limitations of evidence available. As to what is being done to promote Portuguese language in Goa, may be you could start setting an example! I started organizing Portuguese language courses twice a year at XCHR in Porvorim since its inception in 1979 and they are still continued (if I am not mistaken). What have you done for it? Could we read any of your published texts in Portuguese please? Teotonio R. de Souza --- Bernado Colaco Thu, 24 Feb 2005 20:06:33 -0800 Teotonio, I wonder what is there to pick and choose from you historical writings As for 5 centuries of slavery there are many who have contributed to this statement on this list. You have never come forward to defend the truth as a histo. Where do we stand today (in relation to Goa)? Some have brilliant ideas to step up shop with the Portuguese lanuguage talent. What Portuguese talent since 1961? B. Colaco
[Goanet]New research on * Goan MP's in the Portuguese Parliament*
Dear Gabriel, You may check the archives of goanet of last two years for a discussion on the theme of Goa Day, that was celebrated in Portugal during years following Goa's liberation. I myself had raised the question asking for the names of those who represented Goa in the Portuguese parliament just before and even after 1961! Who could have elected those after 1961? Do you know of a lady Albuqurque from your village and who was one of those non-elected representatives? I do not know of any Hindus, even after the Republic of 1910, who occupied any place in the Portuguese parliament as representatives of Portuguese India. Narana Coissoró is a post.1974 phenomenon! There was no universal suffrage in the Portuguese elections till the end of Salazar regime. In largely rural Portugal till 1974, village folks had little direct participation in politics. To cite M. Filomena Monica´s *Os Costumes em Portugal* (1996) for Salazar a country that had the courage to be poor was invincible! The right to vote was limited to those who could read and write, and had to be owners of landed property (subject to land tax). Even among these only the heads of the families were entitled to vote in the local / regional elections. The electoral procedure including census was conducted by men loyal to the party of the dictator. Anyone who was known publicly to be opposed to state policies was excluded from voting. The local / regional administrations till the district / province levels were all systematically brought under centralized control from the time of the Constitution of 1933. The constitutional revisions of 1945 and 1951 made little substantial difference to this tendency. Elections continued to be a farce since 1933. Censorship and PIDE were set up to guarantee that no liberties would subvert the dictatorship. Representatives in the Parliament had little effective say in the running of the country. It is not surprising if Dr. Froilano de Melo, who ended his 1945-1949 term in the Portuguese parliament with a farewell speech wherein his every paragraph began with I failed. He lamented that he was returning to his people with empty hands! He received a big applause for that! The colonies were run under the Colonial Act of 1930.Frustrated with the experience, he chose to exile himself to Brazil! Incidentally, his medical assitant in Goa earned more than him for being a white descendant ! It was Germano Correia, a doctor-anthropologist, who had developed the theory of the racial purity of the descendentes in Goa! Since you asked for a web link that could be useful to study the functioning of the Portuguese parliament, here follows an useful link and tool for research on the subject. It contains parliamentary debates since 1822 till more recent years. With rare exceptions, like Dr. Froilano de Melo, most of the other Goan representatives in the Portuguese parliament during the Estado Novo were dumb figures, not to call them boot-lickers of the regime. I wish their descendants stand up and come forward to prove the contrary with the support of any official records other than their family tales! http://debates.parlamento.pt/default.asp P.J. Peregrino da Costa´s *A expansão do goês pelo mundo* (Goa 1950) is a useful source to trace the Goans who occupied political, military and other positions in Portugal and elsewhere in the world. I do not know what you mean by Courts. Are you meaning cortes (equivalent to Portuguese parliament of sorts ?) or are you referring to judicial courts? In this latter sense, there were quite a few Goan Christians, and also a couple of Hindus, who occupied positions even in the Portuguese supreme court. Presently there is Bernardo Colaço (from Ribandar) as *Procurador Geral Adjunto (Ministerio Publico)* of the Supreme Court of Portugal. As for Goans in the regional assemblies, there was one Abel Fernandes, who held power in the Evora muncipality during three decades till a couple of years back. He belonged to the Communist party. I do not know of any other who left a mark. Goa had representation in the Portuguese Courts and later, the Parliament (including that of Salazar), and that a number of these represenatives were native Goans; 2. How these representatives were elected; If possible, please indicate a link to a list of the names and the periods in which these representatives were active members or the Courts / the Portuguese Parliament, even if this link is not in English. An interesting aside would be if there were any Goa-related representatives in the Portuguese Courts / Parliament for regions other than Goa. This
[Goanet]Cong brings Goa MLAs to Mumbai
Cong brings Goa MLAs to Mumbai http://web.mid-day.com/news/city/2005/february/104356.htm The Congress brought its Goa MLAs to Mumbai late last night and packed them off to an unknown destination in the city. Among the MLAs was BJP man Digambar Kamat (earlier minister in Manohar Parrikars government) who resigned yesterday. The move is aimed at preventing the Bharatiya Janata Party from poaching on its MLAs ahead of the crucial confidence vote for Congress Pratapsinh Rane government on February 28. The BJP government led by Parrikar was dismissed after he won the confidence vote with a slender margin and in a controversial manner. After four MLAs supporting the BJP resigned and an independent legislator was suspended controversially, in the 36-member Assembly, both parties had an equal strength of 18. The BJP sent its MLAs to Jaipur, where it has a government, to prevent any further poaching. But the party received a major setback with Kamats resignation. Forwarded By Eddie Verdes Jeddah/KSA

[Goanet]bad peter and other tiatr stuff
When I was in Goa recently, I attended a tiatr, Kallukant Uzvadd, by comedian Dominic. The reason to attend it in Margoa was to meet some of the old tiatrists such as Prem Kumar and Ophelia who were to be honoured that day. However, the honourees were not present for some reason. I mention this because it was Ophelia who once, when we chatted backstage at Bhangwaddi, remarked to me that I would be in for a surprise. I said what and she smiled away. Then I learnt that she was marrying Bab Peter. It was a May-December wedding, as dear Bab may have been more than 15 years younger than her. I also learnt that the late C. Alvares tried his best to stop this wedding. For those who may not know, C. Alvares dated Ophelia for many years and, I think, the relationship broke when Ophelia moved to Beirut to be with her late sister Mohana. Not surprisingly though, Mohana herself was Alvares's girlfriend. It was a good love affair, I am told. However, I don't know the reason why it fell apart. Future historians of tiatr can investigate. I am not sure if this is mentioned anywhere in the many pieces that appeared after Alvares' death. Coming to Bab Peter, I didn't know him well in later years. I knew him well as a small boy. The reason is that he moved into my building with his family as a sub-tenant. I think Peter's family lived there for not more than six months. It was only when I saw him on stage and his name spread as a budding singer/actor, I realized he was the same Peter I knew as a small kid. However, there was just a casual hi when I bumped into him. But with Ophelia is was a different matter. She spoke freely, though I never got to ask her about her affair with Alvares. During this time Alvares was dating Betty Fernandes. I however talked with other people why Alvares was interfering with her lovelife. Maybe he still had a soft corner for her. I read netter Daniel's interview with Ophelia in Goan Observer. It was heart-warming. I missed the opportunity to meet her. I did enquire about her and other with Wilson Mazrello, of Wilmix, and Cyriaco Dias, who I met at the Vishwa Gomant Sammelan. Cyriaco recognized me when I stood to ask a question during the conference. He then came to the front row where I was sitting and extended his hand. It was a nice meeting after 1988 when he came to Toronto for the first International Goan Convention. Similarly, it was a heart-touching meeting with one two other Goan tiatrists. Walking near Longinos at Margoa I recognized Pramanand Lotlikar walking towards me. I said hello and asked him if he recognized me. He stared at me for a brief time and said yes. He couldn't get my name. We talked for some time and he handed me his business card and I said I would try and meet him at a more convenient time when I come to Margoa. It never happened. Before this another meeting with another tiatrist was refreshing. I didn't know that a tiatr was to be held in a vaddo in Bogmalo on the feast day of St. Sebastian. It was only late at night I got the news. I went but I was late by half an hour to see Tum Asso Sor by Rose Ferns. During the interval I went to the dressing space and said hello to him. He took a long time to recognize and when I told him who I was he suddenly began talking about the times we met in Mumbai. He introduced me to his wife. We talked for a short time and then again after the end of the play. He too said I should drop in his photocopying shop opposite the Vidya Niketan, but I didn't get a chance. It was nice reconnecting with tiatrists after a long time. I saw just two tiatrs. I found Roseferns' tiatr to have gone the soap opera way, as he used some effects from the Hindi soaps that so many Goan families watch fervently. Again coming to Bab Peter, I didn't see him as an actor in the classic mold in the few tiatrs I saw him take part. He survived in the highly-competitive world of Goan theatre. Ophelia, in contrast, was a class by herself. Eugene Correia __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - You care about security. So do we. http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail
