[Goanet]John Paul III, formerly Cardinal Ivan Dias
April 17, 2005 While some Goan Catholics sleep or are indifferent, history beckons. After 500 years of devoted service to the Catholic Church with very little to show in return, one of their own stands at the foot of St. Peters throne. With a little help from his fellow Cardinals, Cardinal Ivan Dias could be seated on that throne in the next few days. Whatever one thinks of him and his views, this is a monumental opportunity. I do not believe many Goan Catholics grasp this rare moment and it may not come again anytime soon. There is no point in counting the odds or wondering what the betting line says who the next Pope will be. This moment is bigger than Cardinal Dias, it puts Goa and India on the world map like no other modern event could. It will say we are equal to the best and one birthed from our loins is now Pope. Collectively, we become the modern day equivalent of the first disciples. While some may reject such an honor and all its religious trappings and human rituals, it is not a gift-horse to be dismissed easily. The Goan and Indian psyche needs to be further elevated after its bout with colonialism. This is also about us, about making post-colonial amends as much as it is about electing a Catholic Pope. The two great challenges of our times are war and poverty. In India and in his lifetime, Cardinal Dias has seen both. He is immensely qualified to deal with the challenges of our times. Whatever one thinks of the Papacy and its limitations as an Institution, now is the time for Goans to dream big. If we believe, it may just happen. Perhaps God is a Goan and the prayers of a devoted people will be answered. One of their own may be called this week to be the Vicar of Christ. Someone will be elected and that someone may be Cardinal Dias, in less than 24 hours! Addressing a Goan American audience five years ago, I wrote we need a Goan President, a Goan Supreme Court Justice, a Goan CEO of a major company (Victor Menezes could be considered to have filled that bill), and a Goan Pope. I thought then a Goan Pope would be the most difficult to achieve and certainly not in my lifetime. I hope I am proved very wrong this week. History beckons Regards, George Pinto

[Goanet]When 'Fort Stikine' blew up in Bombay
Frederick Noronha (FN) wrote When 'Fort Stikine' blew up in Bombay This week marked the 61st anniversary of the 1944 dockyard blasts, which was caused by a massive fire and explosion on board the British freighter Fort Stikine. The vessel was moored at the Bombay docks, was carrying 1300 tonnes of TNT at the time of the blast, and caused a destruction of a total of 27 ships and killed an estimated one thousand people, according to the Indian Express! RESPONSE = Yes, my father Carmo Vaz, (at the time of the blast working for Embarkation HQ near GPO at VT/CST) often told us about how the building shook, window panes shattered, everyone ran for cover thinking it was an air attack as the blasts stopped, peeped out to see the consequences. When I was sailing, we once docked at Victoria or Prince's dock (not sure exactly which). There was/is(?) a tall monument to those dead in the explosion just inside the gate a safety reminder Let's not forget 1944. In a building nearby was a room with information, photos wreckage of the damage. There was more than one ship carrying/transferring explosives - they were enroute to Japan as part of an allied assault. It was a series of explosions fires taking the lives of many sailors, dock workers, fire fighters those who ran in curiosity to see what the first explosion was all about. There were photos of bodies body parts thrown up onto the cranes. Many buildings as far as Crawford Market were reduced to rubble. An anchor flew as far as Ballard Pier cast in concrete at the site where it fell near the PO Lines office. According to my father there were also gold bars thrown about from one the explosions! Re: [Goanet]Re: Betting on the Pope_May be offensive to some
Hello George, From the bit that I have red about the men in birettas, I agree that Cardinal Ivan Gracias would be a worthy successor. As far as conservatives go, he would serve the Church well. However, I totally disagree with the Italian Cardinals as told by the Vatican expert, Marco Politi - that the Italians, whose 455-year-old hold on the papacy was broken by John Paul II's election, were divided, and there was no European or Third World candidate who had captured the prelates' imaginations. (in FRANCES D'EMILIO, Associated Press Writer Cardinals Check in Before Conclave, Sun Apr 17, 9:42 AM ET). About Cardinal Ratzinger becoming Pope. This guy is built like a tank. In my opinion, if he gets elected he will be around for a long time barring serious divine intervention. There is no doubt that there are complex dynamics involved in voting the next Prelate. Note: I did not say voting process. I frankly believe that God looks on this procedure with more than a sense of bemusement. But for better or worse we are part of this adolescent Church! I am considering on betting in Pounds Sterling if Il Papa is not selected on the first round. Upon much reflection, I have concluded that its not in poor taste to bet on the big boys. Venantius Cardinals Check in Before Conclave Sun Apr 17, 9:42 AM ET By FRANCES D'EMILIO, Associated Press Writer Hi Venantius --- Venntius wrote: George, Are you talking of betting with money odds OR betting with emotions and assorted feelings on Cardinal Ivan Dias? I am refering to the latter. Even though he is a long-shot, I am rooting for one of us. One never knows. Till Austrian Cardinal Koenig I believe introduced JP II as a compromise candidate at the last conclave, very few had considered him papabile. A good Catholic would say that God has already chosen the next pope and the Conclave, upon prayer and meditation, will discover and canonically elect him next week. I think Cardinal Ivan Dias is well qualified and though I disagree with some of his views, I hope he is elected. I should say from my vantage point that the entire College of Cardinals is too conservative and no one candidate stands out as endearing. However, emotionally I am rooting for Cardinal Dias. Paddys in Dublin are accepting bets on who will be elected the next Pope?! Do you know any other bookies. Yes, Paddys in addition to Pinnacle and BetFair, see http://www.oddschecker.com/betting/mode/o/odds/124960x/sort/F. Some think the idea of betting on a Pope is in poor taste. One person said he hopes the Pope is elected by Monday or Tuesday so he can use the new Pope's numbers in Wednesday's lotto! RE: [Goanet]Ivan Cardinal Dias
Hi Fredrick et al. Good article! I had the honor to meet Cardinal Dias during four occassions: in Rome and in Bombay. I am happy to see him on the list to be the next Pope. He has been quite loyal to the Church! He is a good man! (also he is my mother's cousin). Although, I am emotionally rooting for Cardinal Dias (or Primo Ivan how I call him), I am praying that the Holy Spirit guides the Cardinals to choose the right one! I am reading the life and writing of JP-II: what a life! We need a good pastor to continue the work that John Paul started. Let's pray for the next Pope as he is among the 117 Cardinals! Regards, J. [Goanet]JACKFRUIT (PON'NOS!) - Part II
In the olden days, we used the pank to catch birds and squirrels. We would place the pank on a piece of broken tile, climb up a tree and keep it in a joint of the tree. We would also sometimes apply a thick layer of pank to one of the branches of a tree. We would then place bait on the pank as an attraction. Once a bird or squirrel sat on the pank it could not fly or move forward. As soon as we heard their cries, we would climb the tree, bring down the catch and place it in a cage. In the past, heated pank was employed as household cement for mending earthenware, holes in roof tiles and buckets. When I was 11 years old, I attended a wedding in Siolim which lasted 8 days 4 days in preparation for the wedding and 4 days after the wedding. There was a huge Rosall jackfruit tree behind the groom's house, the lower trunk of which was filled with dozens of jackfruits. While we roamed the area, we noticed crows pecking at ripe jackfruits. When we approached the tree, we found out there were many ripe jackfruits. Since everyone was busy with wedding preparations, nobody had found time to get to the tree. We politely asked the randpinni (women cooks) to lend us a konn'nn (woven coconut leaf) which they did. We immediately brought down all the ripe jackfruits from the tree, placed them on the konn'nn, tore the rind with our bare hands and ate so much ghore that we had to skip lunch that day. The next day we ate less ghore so that we could also eat some lunch. In the olden days, whenever there was a bumper crop of jackfruit, people made GHOREACHIM SAT'TAM out of jackfruit and used them as sweets during the monsoon season. The preparation process is very simple: Open ghore, remove bingttam and tear open the ghore into two halves. Then cover with plenty of sugar and let them dry in the hot sun for at least for two days. When dried, put them in a container, preferably made of glass with a tight lid to prevent ants from getting to them. Dried jackfruit tastes much better during the monsoon season than in the summer. Enjoy it with a cup of hot tea! In some cases, the ripe bulbs are dried, fried in oil and salted for eating like potato chips. Tender jackfruit leaves and young male flower clusters may be cooked and served as vegetables. Immature fruit can be boiled, fried or roasted. Many people in Goa, especially Hindus, prepare ponnsachi bhaji (jackfruit vegetable) of young jackfruits. The fruit is simply cut into large chunks and boiled in lightly salted water until tender, when the really delicious flesh is cut from the rind and served as a vegetable, including the seeds which, if thoroughly cooked, are mealy and agreeable. The pank clinging to the pot may be removed by rubbing it with oil. Nowadays, everything is available in canned form and jackfruit is not an exception, but there is no comparison to fresh jackfruit. The crisp types of jackfruit are preferred for canning. JACKFRUIT SEEDS Ponnsachim bingttam (jackfruit seeds) are edible and nutritious. They contain 38% carbohydrates, 6.6% proteins and 0.4% fats. In general, fresh seeds are considered to be high in starch, low in calcium and iron and are good sources of vitamins B1 and B2. They may be prepared in several ways. In the olden days and till today, most people in Goa just boil them in hot water or roast them in the hot coals of a dying fire. We would save the seeds in a varn (a special pit meant to husk paddy) or in a corner of the kitchen and make use of them at the beginning of the monsoon season. Whenever it rained heavily, we would boil ponnsachim bingttam and enjoy eating them with a cup of hot tea. Peeling seeds can be a tedious job, especially if they are not well-cooked; if the skin is not cracked and has not come off the seed, it makes it difficult for the thumb nail to dig into the skin. Usually, by the time one is through peeling the seeds, the skin under the thumb tends to crack due to constant use and pressure and it takes around 2-3 days for it to heal. Jackfruit seeds are often included in curried dishes and added to meat instead of potatoes. My ghoramaim (paternal grandmother) used them with sukem, dukrachem kharem mas (dried, salted pork meat.) As a child, I would accompany my ghoramaim to Vagator beach during her yearly salt bath. The norm was to have three baths a day - morning, afternoon and evening - for 3 or 4 days. Every day, she would prepare bhuti (lunch pack) and wrap it in a cloth to carry with us. The lunch mainly consisted of a dish of sukem, dukrachem kharem mas which was prepared with onions, green chilies, tomatoes, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, bindichim solam, fresh coriander and ponnsachim bingttam. We carried the dish in a small kullnnem (a medium earthen utensil mostly used for preparing curries meat.) Wheat chapatis were wrapped in a plantain leaf as were plain rice with green chutney and a solavo (dried fish strip) of either kite or shark fish fried in

Could you please let me have the latest information regarding the Mv River Princess Regards Fred Sleat
[Goanet]Popes in contention.......
A little about some of the candidates... Francis Arinze - Born 1st November 1932 (Age: 70) Arinze would be the first African Pope since Gelasius I in the fifth century. Like John Paul II Arinze holds strong conservative views on abortion, contraception homosexuality. Arinze believes that theologically all people come from the same God and his desire to improve inter-faith relations would see many other religions being welcomed by the Catholic Church What will go in his favour? His conservative views. His ability to improve and encourage Inter-faith relations He is well respected by fellow cardinals It is believed that cardinals would like a Pope from the developing world, where the church has it's largest following Not in his favour Psychologically and spiritually the West may not be ready to welcome a black Pope and this may effect the Cardinals decisions when they go to vote. It is not a race issue but more about people's mentality. Cardinals may not want much focus on improving inter-faith relations within the Catholic Church. Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga Born 29th December 1942 (Age: 62) Many people believe that Maradiaga is the man who could ably succeed John Paul. He campaigned for third world debt relief alongside Bono it is thought he would make a charismatic Pope like John Paul II. There is no doubt that Maradiaga would appeal to many different countries/cultures. He can speak over eight different languages and can even fly a plane! What will go in his favour? He speaks over eight different languages He is active and willing to get involved with worldly issues Latin American Third world which has more Catholics than any other continent Not in his favour He might be slightly too young although John Paul was younger at 58 when he was elected Pope He compared the media to Hitler in the past! Tettamanzi - Born March 14th 1934 (Age: 71) Dionigi Tettamanzi is the Archbishop of Milan (The most powerful archdiocese in the world). The fact that John Paul II promoted him from Cardinal of Genoa to Archbishop of Milan is one of the main reasons why he is considered to be the favourite to succeed as Pope. Highly popular and respected by his fellow Cardinals, Tettamanzi would lead the church in the same conservative direction that John Paul II did. What will go in his favour? Almost all voting cardinals were elevated to be princes of the Church by John Paul II, making it likely that his conservative views will continue into the next Papacy. If elected it would see the Papacy return to an Italian cardinal. As Archbishop of Milan he has powerful countrymen and Opus Dei (Conservative Roman Catholic Group) behind him. An affable, humble man, he has a friendly face and it has even been said that he resembles the great Pope John XXIII Not in his favour It is expected that the newly elected Pope will be someone who can reach out to different countries/cultures. Tettamanzi does not speak English which would limit his ability to communicate as well as John Paul II. He might not be deemed worldly enough. While not as old as some of the cardinals he is a lot older than what John Paul was when elected Pope. Joseph Ratzinger Born 16th April 1927 ( Age: 77) German Cardinal Ratzinger has an added advantage he leads the congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Many have suggested he is somewhat a vice Pope who acts on initiative and is not afraid to make important decisions which many would expect the Pope to make. John Paul asked Ratzinger to stay on for five more years when he suggested he might resign. What will go in his favour? Ratzinger is the Dean of the college of cardinals respected by his fellow brothers Not in his favour Some would consider him too old at 77. Claudio Hummes Born 8th August 1934 (Age: 70) Archbishop of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Hummes is a soft spoken Franciscan conservative. What will go in his favour? He is a member of the increasingly powerful South American group that now makes up almost one fifth of the electors. John Paul II admired Claudio Hummes At 70 he would be the perfect age to succeed the Pope Known worldwide for defending the poor. Not in his favour Has strict views with regards to contraception and the Cardinals might want the church to lean in a more liberal direction. Might not be as charismatic as the likes of Maradiaga or Ratzinger. Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini Born 15th Feb 1927 (Age: 78) Italian cardinal Carlo Maria Martini is a liberal and if made Pope would certainly see the Catholic Church edge away from the old conservative views of John Paul. He retired as archbishop of Milan in 2002 and took up a life of prayer in Rome Jerusalem. While Martini has a lot of support from a large group of cardinals the chances of him becoming Pope are slim especially since it was revealed that he suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease. What will go in his favour? If the cardinals opt for a more Liberal minded Pope Martini would be their man. If the

A recent collision between two big ships off the coast of Goa led to an oil spill that has polluted tourist beaches throughout the state. According to local tourism officials, at least 110,000 liters of fuel oil spilled into the sea threatening marine wildlife, coral reefs, public health and Goa's tourism industry. http://www.cdnn.info/news/eco/e050416.html Sun kissed beaches of Goa attracting tourists [India News] Panjim, Apr. 16 : Goa is a land of sea, sunshine, serene nature and moderately warm climate in winter... the weather is warm and there is plenty of sunshine. [Goanet]FROM AN EYE OF AN EAGLE - VOL. 2
FROM AN EYE OF AN EAGLE VOL. 2by Tony Fernandes I was visiting my folks who have their abode high up in the Western Ghats bordering Goa at its southeastern quarter bordered by covetous neighbours. I had spent almost a fortnight with my relatives at their guest house aerie during the peak tourist season, the Exposition of the Relics of our Patron, Saint Francis Xavier, combined with the much-hyped fancies of IFFI, the festivities of Christmas and the New Year celebrations all in a row. I was reeling from the pressures of excitement about these events. Checking out all these functions with the chaotic situation on our deadly road deathtraps was sure going to be a impossible task. How absent-minded could I be? Im an eagle. Of course I can fly and keep out of the congestion on our mind-boggling traffic situation, worsened by erratic behaviour of some of our mindless road-users. Vehicles have priority where men, women and children fear to tread and daily risk their lives. So come one late December cool early morning my three cousins and I decided to go sightseeing, flying over our southern coastal area and central cities with Cousin Senior in command. Flying leisurely due west at an average speed of 20 kph we were over Palolem Beach in no time. Briefly, while gliding over the southern skies we thought we were in Paradise. We were fooled into believing we were lost for a while. Forced back to reality by the sheer breath-taking beauty of our sandy shores, we banked north-westwards towards Margo city in unison. Just to make certain that were on the right path we swallowed our pride and signaled for directions from what looked like an unruly bunch of black birds, and as bad luck would have it, they crossed us flying north. We got no response from this lot at first. Then after a while we received a message in a coded language that seemed alien. My cousin was quick in assuming that these guys must be bhaile. My other cousin Larreagle confirmed this wayward flying pattern coupled with strange garbled signals. No need to carry on any further conversation, he thought. Gang of nomads, lamanis? he wondered, surveying areas of business interests where our ganv-bhaus fear to tread? he queried. Just as we stopped pondering over these negative aspects and effects of the trivia about this bhaile and bitorle mentality we tried to look upon the better side of it. How benevolent, tolerant and peace-loving bird-souls we have always been. The cool sea breeze from the serene western shores gently hit our portside wings. The sun in the east lit the northwestern slopes with liquid waste and smoke-spewing factories, chimney stacks seemed to have made huge ecologically damaging and disastrous strides with their protrusions on their once glorious and pristine sides. My thoughts seemed to wander. I was immediately interrupted by my cousin, an experienced and senior navigator. He brought to my notice that we were already flying over the city of Margao. So we circled around trying to locate the once beautiful and mythical Margao Municipal Garden. After a frantic search among the chaos of unruly parking, the pollution in the square amidst the din created by cars, buses, trucks and scooters plying through garbage-ridden streets, we finally found the once mystical garden if one could hardly call it a garden at all nowadays. It had lost its former charm and glory. The city had tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to hang on to a well-laid out former glory. It dared to stand up unsuccessfully to the ravages of time, with a garden now teeming with jobless day-lodgers, free sleepers on the municipal benches and idle people whiling their time away sprawled on what we could now hardly call lawns, if at all. As we glanced west we were saddened to observe the crushed coaches of KRC. There went our dream! And theirs! Generally we were not at all impressed with what we saw. The squalor of side lanes, the unbearable stench in the market place that could be sniffed at an altitude of over 5500 feet, nearly sent my younger cousin into a spin. Long ago the people of this great city spoke three main languages. With our ultra sensing devices we could now hear a rattle of over two dozen alien tongues and dialects, excluding foreign tourists conversing in strange languages. They now seemed to be a confused lot, lost in a ratrace heading nowhere. We had another problem yet again just before heading out of town. We seemed to have got lost in this city inspite of our fabled vision, flawless sense of direction and unmatched navigational skills. We felt challenged in this disturbed metropolis. We tried to locate a once wellknown street. So we inadvertently signaled another bunch of unruly fliers, that we yet again unluckily ran into, for directions. After a slight delay came a reply that we christened as Konkanarese. My youngest linguistically adept cousin was quick to decipher the

[Goanet]One Year Later - The Asian Age
One Year Later - The Asian Age India | M.J. Akbar There is no evidence yet that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is planning any anniversary parties to celebrate his surprise elevation to the top job in India. But there is plenty to indicate that the BJP has begun to mark a year of its funeral with a spectacular civil war. We know that a year ago the BJP-led government died in the general elections. Was the death of natural causes? Was it suicide? Was it murder? These are the vital questions that the Hindutva Parivar has grappled with for twelve-odd months without finding a convincing answer. After much deliberation, RSS head Sudarshan, chief justice of the Supreme Court of the BJP's criminal-justice system, has reached a verdict of suicide and wants the two men who have led the party for the last quarter century to retire. But there remains some confusion about the verdict. Are Messrs Atal Behari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani being punished for having lost the election or having lost their teeth? Were they wrong? Were they disobedient? Or are they simply too old for Mr Sudarshan, no spring chicken himself? The options are intriguing. The fact that their election strategy failed is an old story. It doesn't take a year to figure out that they fell on their face when trying to expand the BJP space at the expense of allies like DMK in Tamil Nadu, Asom Gano Parishad in Assam, Janata Dal(U) in Jharkhand and Lok Dal in Haryana. But the younger men and women in the party were equally guilty. There is no record of anyone having suggested that the party was heading towards the pavilion rather than the three-century mark. Moreover, the two elders have learnt to get along with each other. That is not a quality that the BJP's Gen Next can boast of. The middle-aged leaders may have lost the elections, but they have not lost their egos. Which of the younger leaders would Mr Sudarshan put in charge? The answer goes to the heart of a supplementary: did the BJP lose because of Vajpayee or because of Narendra Modi and the indelible scar of the Gujarat riots? I suspect that the RSS wants the two elders to make way for Narendra Modi, although that is not being said quite so plainly yet. For him, Narendra Modi is the solution rather than the problem. Mr Modi's problem is not the BJP: the party's knees get wobbly the moment it enters the vicinity of Nagpur. But the BJP is not yet ready to fight an election alone. It needs allies and its allies don't need Narendra Modi. The anger against Mr Vajpayee stems not from age but from disobedience, for he attempted to use power to reshape the party. He was, in a sense, trying to remake the BJP into a mirror of his preferred kind of government. There is a fundamental law of Indian politics: you can reach Delhi from which angle of the ideological prism you like, but when you reach the Centre you must rule from the center. The BJP could not run a government on the three wheels on which it ran its populist campaigns: the construction of a temple to Lord Ram on the site of the Babri mosque, which it helped destroy; the abolition of Article 370; and the enactment of a uniform civil code. You do not have to be a Chanakya to recognise that all three are issues that are hostile to the sentiments of Muslims. Mr Vajpayee and Mr Advani, whatever the difference in nuance between them, could not run a government that was on principle hostile to Muslims. In six years of office, construction of a temple did not begin. The abolition of Article 370 was always an absurd idea, since it would sever the constitutional link with Jammu and Kashmir. And of course no one ever did anything more than pay lip service to the idea of a uniform civil code. The RSS is punishing Messrs Vajpayee and Advani for disloyalty to its agenda. It believes that prevarication cost the party power, and wants to retire them. But since political formations respect the social culture, such bloodletting will not be easy. Mr Vajpayee did not walk the plank after Mr Sudarshan's fulminations. In a public speech he suggested that he might have lost his office but he had not yet lost his honour. Confusion is the mantle of despair. Loss of government has turned the alleged swayamsevaks of the RSS into power-addicts. They can't seem to survive without sniffing the glue of office each morning. If the Opposition is fragile, the government is frail. Its principal redeeming feature remains the personality of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, but while the goodwill generated by his integrity is fine, it is not good enough. The electorate has acquired a demanding voice. It expects a healthy government to deliver a child every nine months. So far the main things delivered to the people of India have been sermons in English. (It is a curious fact that all the leading lights of the Congress Party are far more comfortable in English than Hindi: Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh,

George, You have used a very interesting technique in this post, my friend. You have re-written a complete sentence that is NOT in a news report, in order, you say, to translate what a reporter had written, not in some foreign language, but in English. Thus you have created an entire issue that was not in the report and fitted it neatly into a preconceived opinion, which your ingenious translation made possible. Wow! Isn't this how conflict can be created out of whole cloth, by someone saying Don't believe what someone has said or done, but believe what I say he has said and done, because I can read between the lines, and you simpletons cannot? Since you have alluded before to the US's sole interest in geopolitics being control of oil, etc. which you are again hinting at in this post, I wonder what you saw between the lines when the US left all that mid-east oil they had total control of in 1991 after chasing Saddam out of Kuwait, and went home? With all due respect, why would we want to forget about all that world peace, common good stuff, especially when it's beginning to happen, even in Palestine, unless you are either against the concept, or have a better idea of how to achieve this? I have a more plausible theory for you to consider without reading between any lines or re-writing my simple prose. I think the US has a strategic interest in helping India become a world power. First, because they have a common history as secular democracies. Second, because India provides the US with an unlimited source of brainpower and initiative, and the US, which essentially belongs to the world, has achieved great economic success in using the brains of its unending source of immigrants, by providing the high achievers with an encouraging environment. Third, since India is moving in that direction anyway, why not develop stronger bonds with India as a balance weight against the other evolving giant, China, whose communist philosophy and leadership may regress in the future from the positive strides they have made recently. --- George Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Let me translate the report below as follows: Bush, acting on behalf of Enron and his Texan energy connections, met with the External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh in the Oval Office and pressed for payment on the Enron plant in Maharashtra. The non-payment and delay by India has caused considerable angst among Enron's creditors and investors in Texas. One has to read between the lines and through diplomatic press releases. The hint of energy sectors mentioned in the report tells us what was really discussed and what the meeting was about. Bush today said US held India as a global power and wanted to work together for mutual economic benefit and cooperate in the civilian nuclear and other energy sectors. During the 30-minute meeting with External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh at the Oval Office, Bush said US regarded India as a global power with which the US wants to work very closely for the common good, for world peace and for mutual economic benefit. Bush told Singh that India and the US need to work together in the energy sector that would include cooperation in civilian nuclear energy. Terming Indo-US relations as the best we have had for a very long time, Singh said India was interested in having a much closer relationship during Bush's second term in office. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran said Bush told Singh that he was looking forward to his trip to India, hopefully within this year. The US President said he very much looks forward to receiving Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Washington in the near future.
[Goanet]GOAN TALENT: William D'Souza
William D'Souza, mentor and a major influence on our artistes at Angel AV, started playing drums at the tender age of 12, was named Goa's best drummer in the Goa Today polls 1987. He started with a Goan band called The Band, just after finishing High School. He has toured extensively with foreign and Indian bands and also as a solo performer. He has been influenced by and adept at Rock Roll, RnB and Jazz. German fusion ensemble 'Embryo' influenced him to get into Carnatic music, who themselves were experimenting with various Indian musicians. After his B. Pharm he enroled for a post graduation course in Mridangam (Indian Percussion) at the Karnataka college of Percussion Bangalore, with the famous Vidwan T.A.S. Mani as his Guru. He pioneered carnatic rythmns as a medium on western drums and also took up to experimenting Bharatnatyam dance tradition i.e. using adavu (notations of dance) and Kanaku (notations of mridangam). Now between freelancing as a drummer with various bands and conducting workshops, he is carrying on his studies in Carnatic music in Bangalore, it has become a vocation for him - a lifetime study. Recently William D'Souza performed along with DJ Dheeraj at Planet M. It was an enthralling show from the man who has a verve for music and a passion for experiments. This was followed by an impromptu performance with Remo Fernandes. The crowd savored every moment of it and the man on the spotlight even answered a few queries from them. Another memorable performance for him was on the 7th of September, a jugalbandi of drums and sitar with a renowned sitarist Ustad Chote Rehmat Khan. [Goanet]INDIAN EXPRESS: Our cardinal in the Vatican
http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=68253 Our cardinal in the Vatican 68-year old Cardinal Ivan Dias is one of the contenders for 'Shepherd of the Catholic Church'. His friends call him a 'sweet holy guy' ANNA M.M. VETTICAD Posted online: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at hours IST He was the last of the Indian Cardinals to leave for the Papal election. After presiding over a requiem Mass for His Holiness Pope John Paul II at the Holy Name Cathedral in Fort, Mumbai, 68-year-old Cardinal Ivan Dias boarded a flight to Rome in the way he does most things--quietly and unobtrusively. The man Time magazine has described as ''Asia's best chance'' for the Papacy, the man that bookies are placing odds on as a long shot for the post, has been curiously inaccessible to the media ever since the Pope's demise. ''I think he's embarrassed by all this speculation that he might become Pope,'' says his long-time friend and associate Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Agra. ''He doesn't like making much of himself and doesn't like a personality cult. He's a warm, caring human being, quiet and not effusive.'' A close family friend describes him as ''a sweet, holy guy''. His secretary of six years, Fr. Pravin Fernandes adds succinctly: ''The Cardinal is very low-profile about his achievements.'' Of those achievements there are many. During his priestly studies he distinguished himself so well, says Fr. Fernandes ''that he was handpicked by Cardinal Valerian Gracias (India's first cardinal) for higher studies at the Pontifical Academy in Rome, which trains future ambassadors for the Vatican's diplomatic corps''. Cardinal Dias holds a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome. And while his fluency in 17 languages could be an apocryphal story, an associate confirms that he is proficient in about a dozen including Hindi, his mother tongue Konkani, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and Korean. Ivan Dias was born in Mumbai on April 14, 1936. His father worked with the Government of Maharashtra. Of his three brothers, one is a doctor and another is a retired Lieutenant General. Young Ivan studied at the city's St. Stanislaus High School. He was ordained a priest in 1958, and became a bishop 24 years later. As a member of the Vatican's diplomatic service since 1964, he has held diplomatic posts (including some ambassadorial appointments) in several countries, among them Indonesia, Mauritius, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Korea and Albania. In November 1996, he was appointed Archbishop of Mumbai. Despite his retiring personality, The Man-Who-Might-Be-Pope clearly has a sense of humour. On his 2001 appointment as the third cardinal in Mumbai's history, he reportedly described the occasion as ''a red-hat-trick'' for the city--an allusion to the red headgear that is a mark of a cardinal. If complexity and contradiction are constant companions of greatness, Cardinal Dias is an assured candidate. Although he has consistently refused to give press interviews since the Pope passed away, his letter on the Mumbai Archdiocese website observes: ''Globally, the Church's attitude to media has grown from a lack of positive involvement to acceptance, critical understanding and the possibility of evangelising it. It is with the growing recognition of the media's potential for good, and its value as a means of personal and collective sanctification, that we have launched our archdiocesan website.'' As an Indian, what would he bring to the Papacy? ''Like the last Pope, he too would lay great stress on dialogue with other religions. After all, inter-faith dialogue is something that comes naturally to any Indian,'' says Gracias, the Archbishop of Agra. During his tenure, the Cardinal has continued the Mumbai Archdiocese's tradition of hosting an annual Christmas meeting of leaders of all religions. Yet, he is known to hold views that are contrary to the position taken by the Roman Catholic Church after the revolutionary Second Vatican Council of the 1960s, which declared, to put it simply, that you don't have to be a Christian to attain salvation. Those familiar with the history of the Church will tell you that Vatican II (in which John Paul II was a moving force) had displeased many conservatives within the Catholic Church at the time. Perhaps that is why, while listing Cardinal Dias as one of the top 20 contenders for the Papacy, the respected US-based newsweekly National Catholic Reporter says, ''Dias is traditional and conservative in outlook, which separates him from the mainstream of the Indian episcopacy and theological community, known for its embrace of religious pluralism and a progressive stance on social questions.'' Whoever wrote that is probably also aware that Cardinal Dias is believed to strongly adhere to the traditional position of the Roman Catholic Church on both abortion and homosexuality. So does Cardinal Dias really stand a
[Goanet]Ivan Cardinal Dias
George, One step closer to your distant hope? Ivan Cardinal Dias has secured a page on my favourite Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Cardinal_Dias Ivan Cardinal Dias From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ivan Cardinal Dias is the Archbishop of Bombay in Mumbai, India. Upon the death of Pope John Paul II, he was considered papabile. His Eminence Ivan Cardinal Dias (born April 14, 1936 in Mumbai, India) is a Roman Catholic cardinal and Archbishop of Mumbai. Ordained a priest in 1958 in Mumbai, Dias was appointed to the Secretariat of State in the Roman Curia in 1964. He served at the Secretariat's Eastern Europe office for nine years before being sent to the nunciatures (embassies) in Scandinavia, Indonesia and Madagascar. Dias then transfered to the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church. Dias returned to the Secretariat of State in 1982, when he was appointed pro-nuncio to Ghana, Benin, and Togo, and consecrated as a titular archbishop. In 1987, he was appointed papal nuncio to South Korea. In 1991, Dias was appointed nuncio to Albania, where he helped rebuild the Catholic Church after the end of Communism. Dias stayed in Albania until early 1997. Dias was appointed Archbishop of Mumbai on November 8, 1996, and made the Cardinal Priest of Spirito Santo alla Ferratella by Pope John Paul II in the consistory of February 21, 2001. Cardinal Dias, who speaks at least 12 languages, is one of the Cardinals considered papabile at the 2005 Papal conclave. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This is from americancatholic.org http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/JohnPaulII/transition/CardinalsDias.asp Variety of experience gives cardinal from India high profile By Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Experience as an archbishop, as a Vatican diplomat and in the Roman Curia gave Indian Cardinal Ivan Dias of Mumbai a high profile in the College of Cardinals at the end of Pope John Paul II's pontificate. Archbishop Ivan Dias of Bombay, India, was among those named a cardinal Jan. 21 by Pope John Paul II. Cardinal-designate Dias is 64. (CNS photo from Catholic Press Photo) The cardinal frequently is a featured speaker at Vatican-sponsored events, yet he is reluctant to grant interviews, and very little about him has appeared in the press, either in India or abroad. When the chief Vatican correspondent for Italy's state-run television station -- the station that has an exclusive cooperation agreement with the Vatican for broadcasting papal events -- tried to interview the cardinal, he politely declined all but a brief exchange. If you want pictures of me, I prefer you take them while I'm praying, not while I'm talking. People on their knees are more eloquent, he told the reporter. Humanity needs witness of faith, not orators. Just a month after the Indian prelate was named a cardinal in February 2001, Pope John Paul named him to be one of three presidents of the world Synod of Bishops and a member of three key Vatican congregations: doctrine, Catholic education and worship and the sacraments. The need for strong, convinced witnesses of faith is a recurring theme in his speeches and messages, whether addressed to an international gathering of priests, a Vatican conference on health care, a religious order holding its general chapter or one of his rare interviews. In October, Cardinal Dias was the homilist at one of the liturgies held during a Vatican-sponsored international gathering of priests in Malta. He said that in a world dominated by information technology, by New Age teaching and by the decline of ethical values, God is calling priests to be models and guides of holiness for others. Cardinal Dias told the priests, God forges saints on the anvil of love, which sometimes takes the form of a cross. Every saint has had to overcome difficulties and suffering of various kinds, but all of them have done so with a profound interior peace and with spiritual joy. In fact, we know that a sad saint is a poor saint, he said. While his own cultural background and his diplomatic experience make him sensitive to the need to respect and value other religions, Cardinal Dias, 68, was one of the most outspoken supporters of the controversial 2000 document by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on the uniqueness of salvation through Jesus Christ. Speaking to reporters in Rome shortly after the document, Dominus Iesus, was released, the then-archbishop said, It is a reaffirmation of what we believe and what we think, namely that Jesus is the only savior of the world. We have a right to say who we are, and others can accept it or not, he said. Giving strength to the suspicion that the document was prompted particularly by the interreligious efforts of Asian theologians, and especially those working in India, he said clarity was needed in countries where the vast majority of people are not Christian. [Goanet]JACKFRUIT (PON'NOS!) - Part I
The jackfruit originated in India at the foot of the Western Ghats, and is now very popular throughout South East Asia. The tree is handsome and stately, 30 to 70 feet tall, with evergreen, alternate, glossy, somewhat leathery leaves which are oblong, oval or elliptic in form, 4 to 6 inches in length; juvenile leaves are lobed. All parts contain pank (sticky white latex.) Short, stout flowering twigs emerge from the trunk and large branches, or even from the soil-covered base of very old trees. It cannot tolerate wet feet. If the roots touch water, the tree will not bear fruit or may die. A good yield is about 150 large fruits per tree annually, though some trees bear as many as 250 and a fully mature tree may produce 500, these probably of medium or small size. A jackfruit tree is said to live as long as 100 years. However, productivity declines with age. Almost everyone in Goa grows jackfruit trees and they can be seen in every compound/backyard in villages as well as in towns. The fruit is unusual as it is borne on the main branches and the trunks, occasionally even from surface roots of the tree. It is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, weighing from 10 to 60 or even as much as 110 pounds, and up to 36 inches long and 20 inches in diameter. The rind or exterior of the compound fruit is green or yellow when ripe and is composed of numerous hard, cone-like points attached to a thick and rubbery, pale yellow or whitish wall. The interior consists of large edible bulbs of yellow, banana-flavored flesh, massed among narrow ribbons of thin, tough undeveloped perianths and a central, pithy core. Each bulb encloses a smooth, oval, light brown starchy seed covered by a thin white membrane. The seed is 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long and 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick and is white and crisp within. There may be 100 or up to 500 seeds in a single fruit. The aroma of the ripening fruit is extremely sweet, with a distinctive flavor reminiscent of banana and pineapple. Once the aroma spreads, it cannot be controlled; hence, the good old Konkani saying: Pon'nos lipovn dovrunk zait punn tacho pormoll lipovnk zainam! (You may be able to hide a jackfruit but you cannot hide its aroma!) Jackfruits mature 3 to 8 months after flowering. The fruit is covered with numerous hard points, is pale green in color and changes to a yellowish-brown during ripening. Fruit is mature for harvest when the single small leaf above the stem withers and the first color change occurs. Ripening continues post- harvest and with experience is ascertained by tapping the fruit. When ripe, the fruit softens a little and the rind will give in when pushed. Jackfruits turn brown and deteriorate quickly after ripening. If a person is fat and has a round stomach, people remark: Zala polle pon'nos kosso! (Look at him, he has become like a jackfruit!) Sometimes, they jokingly tap his stomach and ask him: Pon'nos pikla re? (Is the jackfruit ripe?) Jackfruit is a summer fruit of Goa. It ripens principally from March to June. It is one of those delicacies which once you begin to eat ends only when the stomach is full. Many people at first hesitate to eat it because of the pank but once they get the hang of eating it then there is no looking back; jackfruit fondness grows with familiarity. This is how the good old saying Vokol ghore khainam mhunnon bingttanim varn bhorlelem came to be known. Roughly translated, it means the bride pretended not to eat jackfruit and yet the pit was filled with seeds. Similarly, many people despise things when they have had too much of them or had them for too long and here again we have the Goan jackfruit-related saying: Pott bhortuch ghore ambott! (When your stomach is full, carpel is sour.) There are three types of jackfruits in Goa: (1) Rosall Pon'nos having a pale-brown or occasionally palegreen rind and containing small, fibrous, soft, mushy, but very sweet ghore (carpel;) the rind can be broken open with bare hands. Some women, when their husbands are aged, refer to them as Rosall Pon'nos; (2) Capo Pon'nos - usually having a light-green rind, occasionally brownish and containing crisp and almost crunchy ghore of high quality though not quite as sweet; a knife is needed to cut open the rind; and (3) Capo-Rosall Pon'nos - also having the same rind as that of Capo but its ghore is a mixture of both - neither hard nor soft but sweeter than Capo Pon'nos; also needs a knife to cut open the rind. The char (perianths) of the Type 3 jackfruit is quite thick and as tasty as the fruit. As children, we ate it as well. Jackfruit trees of Type 1 mostly bear fruits at their lower trunks, whereas Types 2 and 3 bear fruits high above on the tree. To remove jackfruits from such trees, you climb up the tree with the help of a ladder, carrying with you a baincho razu (well rope) and a knife, place the rope on the nearest joint next to the jackfruit to be removed, prepare a

Hello Netters Yes, I too have observed lots of Goans wearing helmets, but there are many others who do ride without helmets, inspite of it being compulsory. The fine being rupees 100 for riding without helmet, I feel if the RTO make it a policy to sell helmets at the point where they catch the riders without helmets, they will make more money by billing the rider 100 plus price of the helmet, and hence, those who leave their helmets behind will be forced to carry theirs or end up buying helmets from the RTO Cheers Jerry Fernandes
[Goanet]Konkani -independent language, not a dialect
http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=newsStory_ID=041628Konkani independent language, not a dialect, says Fr Naik NT News Service Mapusa April 15: There is a belief that a language that is spoken more than it is written is a dialect and that which has more written literature is a language. That belief is a myth and not a fact. This was stated by the director of the Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendra (TSKK), Fr Pratap Naik at the history hour at the Xavier Centre for Historical Research, Porvorim today. The history hour was dealing with the topic, ?Konkani: myths and facts.? Fr Naik said there is a belief that just because there is a relatively low volume of written Konkani literature though it is commonly spoken, it is a dialect of some other language and not a language itself. This belief is a myth. Fr Naik cited the example of the Tullu language of Karnataka and said that though there is little written literature in Tullu, it is an independent language and not a dialect of any other language. He also demolished the myth that just because there is no separate script for Konkani, it is not an independent language stating that even Sanskrit does not have its own original script. Another myth that was broken by Fr Naik was the belief that Konkani is a daughter of Sanskrit. Stating that this is not true, he said it is difficult to say which is language and which is a dialect. There is yet another belief that prior to the arrival of the Portuguese there was a highly developed Konkani literature, which was destroyed by them. Fr Naik said this too is untrue. He said most of the inscriptions of the time prior to the Portuguese arrival were written in Persian, Sanskrit or Marathi. Fr Naik said he had found not a single leaf in Konkani dating back to those days. ?If the Portuguese had indeed destroyed all Konkani manuscripts in the Old Conquests, then why was Konkani literature not found in the New Conquests?? he asked. Fearing conversions, Fr Naik stated that our forefathers from the Old Conquests had moved heavy deities and heavy gold artefacts from the Old Conquests to the New Conquest areas. ?If they could move all those heavy articles, why did they not move relatively lighter manuscripts of Konkani literature? It is because not much written Konkani literature existed then,?he added. Another myth demolished by Fr Naik was that in Goa, Konkani is taught in most schools. Handing out copies of statistic (as on September 30, 2003) gleaned from the Directorate of Education, Fr Naik stated that out of a total of 966 government primary schools in Goa, 918 offered Marathi as the medium of instruction and only 79 offered Konkani as the medium of instruction.-- Regards, Carlos

--- Gabe Menezes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Don't believe, all things you read on Goanet. I was given the impression that there were only white Popes- to my chagrin, I lost a £50 pound bet Dear Gabe: The Jesuit head is referred to as the Black Pope, we could have saved you 50 quid! I have not read all recent Goanet emails, so I cannot tell if the impression that there were only white Popes is true. St. Peter, the first Pope, was not European or white as we understand the term white today. However, it is true Europe has dominated the Papacy. Teotonio can shed more light on this, but part of the problem is there is some confusion on early Church history. I do not believe there was smooth succession and transition of Popes as we see today. Some lists show there were 274 Popes to date, some 265. Part of the problem is the dual popes and anti-popes. Even the Vatican website has no official list. In fact it only goes back to Leo XIII, see http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/index.htm If you have not paid the 50 quid, perhaps pay less. There is doubt regarding Pope St. Gelasius and if he was a African Pope (keep in mind not all Africans are black). One quote you may be interested in - [He] Died at Rome, 19 Nov., 496. Gelasius, as he himself states in his letter to the Emperor Anastasius (Ep. xii, n. 1), was Romanus natus. The assertion of the Liber Pontificalis that he was natione Afer is consequently taken by many to mean that he was of African origin, though Roman born. Others, however, interpreting natione Afer as African by birth, explain Romanus natus as born a Roman citizen. Before his election as pope, 1 March, 492, Gelasius had been much employed by his predecessor, Felix II (or III). Notice the reference to Felix II (or III), since the original Felix II was considered a anti-pope, at the time of Liberius. Good luck understanding early Church history, I certainly would not place any bets on it. Regarding 2005, hope you are betting on our Cardinal Ivan Dias. Regards, George

Don't believe, all things you read on Goanet. I was given the impression that there were only white Popes- to my chagrin, I lost a £50 pound bet http://www.ndtceda.com/archives/200208/0163.html Hello Present and Former Debaters, It has been a concern of mine that many people still are unaware of the roles that Blacks play in the role of Christianity since the foundation of the Church. Many people believe that only Whites have ever been Pope or until recently declared saints. It seems that this wide spread ignorance is intentional as shown by the Catholic Church changing of a recent canonized saints from a dark skin man with little facial hair to a light skinned man with beard (sounds kind of familiar). I assume that the dark skinned saint was not good enough to be a representative of the Church. The following website lists the Black popes, Black saints, and so on. http://www.holyangels.com Three Black Catholic Popes There were 3 Popes known to be black: Pope St. Victor - Elected in 189 AD. He was deacon when he became Pope, a rarity then and now. He established a set date for the celebration of Easter yearly. He died a martyr for the faith in 199. Pope St. Militiades - Reigned as Pope from 311 - 314. He signed the emperor Constantine's famous Edict of Milan in 313, ending the persecutions, and making Christianity the established religion of the empire. He was considered an excellent Pope, a son of peace and father of Christians according to St. Augustine. Pope St. Gelasius - Reigned from 492 -496. Born in Rome, he was renowned for his holiness, kindness and scholarship. He saved Rome from famine, composed a book of hymns for church use, was renowned for his concern for the poor and clarified church teaching on the Eucharist. Anthony of Egypt - Founder of Monasticism A black man born in 251 of wealthy parents in Egypt, he inherited their wealth when his parents died. But his desire to imitate the poverty of Jesus led Anthony to sell all he had, withdraw from civilization, and live a life devoted to prayer, fasting and piety. He was the first to withdraw in such a way, and gradually became famed for his spiritual wisdom and battles with the devil. Other people came to join him eventually, and Anthony spent time training them in the monastic life. He was a renowned preacher and teacher, and is considered today the father of monasticism and religious life. Few Christians have had the impact of the black monk Anthony of Egypt.. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England

The following article first appeared in Yahoo Groups/Monte de Guirim in October 2004. On reading some of the current postings on goanet about nick-names I thought of sharing my article with fellow-readers. The Friars the Boys (Part Five) Nostalgia of Monte de Guirim NICK-NAMES AT MONTE by Tony Fernandes Nick-names at Monte. They were funny, hilarious and varied indeed, short and to the point. Concise. Descriptive. Some were condescending while other were patronizing. Through my scholastic years they dragged on and on. They were for some like a stigma. For life. They stuck on us throughout our entire schooling years and perhaps beyond. They weathered on like permanent labels as we moved higher from one grade to the next. Some were good, others bad. Some were funny, others wild - but most of them were unique in their own way and had a particular aural ring or a peculiar tone to them. A nickname at times was good for some. It made them popular. The boys with nicknames took them in stride. Some with offence, others without. Somewere bold enough to fight them in defiance. Others just ignored them. I remember my own nickname well. Without doubt one that I resented of course. Funny Faces they called me. And till today I recall how and when it all began. I was very fond of drawing and improvising cartoons from comic books back then, and that started it all. I couldnt challenge the onslaught of one full division of over thirty students. Initially I did pick a fight or two but eventually gave up. Somehow it taught the art of turning a deaf ear. Sometimes, on one hand I ignored it completely, while on the other hand I secretly thought of devising a mean name for the name-caller! Too hard to put a stop to it, I thought. I had studies on my mind too. Fighting back was futile and ineffective. It was dangerously spreading to other divisions of my class. I thrashed some guys my own size, but to no avail. At other times I just put up with the bigger bullies. The name stuck on for years and I finally gave up. Can't fight them, join them! As time went by, every second student had a nickname. Nicknames increased as more students enrolled every year. Later, days and years passed by, we grew up, moved up to higher classes and got more serious about our studies towards the final years - and it wasnt a big deal anymore. Everyone called the other by nickname anyway! And at most times nobody cared. Today, in retrospect, I wonder how we could have done and lived without those brilliant nicknames. It was simply plain adolescent fun. School life would have been totally different without them. Some dared to call others by nicknames and nicknames alone calling by a proper name would be improper, they thought. Probably a few did not. The Great Nicknames of Monte I call them some of which were of the extremely rarest and innovative. Others could have been nominated for prize-wiinners for being the most imaginative, of funniest kind and variety. A nickname described it all just in a single word. What probably is unknown how some of those great monikers for a particular student were initiated, and to whom the coinage would primarily be attributed to. Were they the creations of just one person? Or did a talented bunch of name-callers go under-ground and have a under-cover board meeting during the afternoon recess under the cool shade of the cashew trees before they set about inventing a descriptive alias for someone else? And then did this secret organiztion have a secret ballot? Did these master nick-name creators cast votes on the decided winner? Although I knew the student who coined my own nickname, and who I clearly remember to this day, he is still the same my good old buddy and keeps in touch though not by my nickname. Others perhaps may be unaware of the inventors of the students aliases of the times gone by. If we ever attempted to compile a list of such names, my guess is that it would certainly run into quite a sizable collection to be treasured for posterity. The Nickname Register would surely bring back great memories of a bygone era. Some of the nicknames themselves were legends and so were the students with sub-titles that stood the test of time. Of course, while Archimedes, and Elvis were named after great men, many were named after regional or global places or territories which the boys hailed from. Others were aptly applied by what the particular student was good at, or may not have been in other cases. Fruity names like Water Melon, and veggie names like Bendo still come to mind. Mad Scientist, Monkey-nut and Matari were quite familiar alternative designations. Others were abstract. Some were named after earth elements. I remember one student who was nick-named Varem (breeze) simply because he ran and won the 100-metres sprint and the school marathon. Above all, the Fathers, Brothers and Teachers were not spared by the students without being

[Goanet]Re (Goanet) How many sacraments one can take New Pope New Reforms??
Thank you Miguel for your feedback. I knew you would be the first on this (as in the past, see quoted below). It seems you got pretty good knowledge in this matter. Thanks for sharing with us. Quote: http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2003-August/004164.html [Goanet]Goa-Should Church Actively Involve in Politics?? goanet@goanet.org goanet@goanet.org Mon, 18 Aug 2003 16:20:09 -0400 I know this subject could be sensitive but is worth discussing as it can be proved that people/laity are not the same they were 15-20 years ago.. Here are some of the facts: About 15 years, Church distributed through sermons circulars/handbills etc etc advising the laity not to go any where near to the then Dis-own or defected 5 prists from Pilar. But people ignored their instructions and continued attending their (dis-own priests) masses at Fr. Agnelo Verna. About 5 years later, those dis-own/ defected priests re-joined? They ae all in the family now..? But church failed to clarify or notify this to the laity. There is a saying in konkani kelolem urta ani Randlolem Sorta Again, around 12 years ago, Church was in the news again. This time 'not to support Konkan Railway? or its Alingement?' Human Chain was organised with the support of the Church. Again, Church had distributed hanbills, circulars etc to all churches plus lengthy sermons on sunday masses to oppose konkan Railways and to support Human Chain protest. This so called Human Chain protest was a grand FLOP. Why it went Flop? people /laity wise enough now to know whats wrong and what right?? The most recent church involvement in supporting Meta Strip agitation where some priests were actively involved, again, failed to gather support from the laity. Conclusion: People /laity are not the same they were 20 years ago. Church should spend and of their spare time in meditation/praying and if still time left then they should clear up their own backyard first. Priest are themselves are not the same now as they were 25 years ago (always seen with their cassock on etc etc) and that they should accept the chages in laity too. If priests can change with the time so can the laity. Depite all above incidents/evidences, it seems lessons are not yet learnt. Note: I am Catholic and proud to be catholic. This is just a dicussion and all above are facts I have been there, seen and heard and not relied on any other sources (however, there were some news items in the local dailies to proove my facts) your opinion wellcome!! joe A reply: http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2003-August/004225.html Dear (joe) When you state something as a 'fact',you should verify it first. The Verna Grroup of Pilar fathers continues to be outside the Diocese though inside the state. I do not know if a Bishop can invalidate the mass celebrated by an 'ordained' priest,or to de-value it. Whatever the status at the time of the split ,it continues. The group is dying out because no fresh ordinations are possible. They should have split with a Bishop on their side to ordain their successors. It is now a No-Win situation. KRC,Meta Strips,Medium of Education, etc.,the Church should leave to the society to decide. It should pray, meditate and lead by example of simplicity, humility, honesty and kindness that were the hall marks of Christ. If it cannot forgive the Verna priests, why should it expect the world to forgive it its misdeeds? Do unto others what you would have others to do unto you. It holds good for everyone and anyone. [Goanet]Salmona Springs
Yes, we are most concerned about the Saligao Springs and as our good friend Rene has explained we want to get some kind of petition signed here. We are working on this at the moment. If there is anything else we can do - don't hesitate to ask. Unfortunately our Goans here are a lost tribe. Sandra and I for the last so many years are trying to unify the Goan Community in the UK towards a positive direction. We are slowly making headway. We are very much concentrating on the youngsters of our community as they are our future. Love to all Sandra Roque (Arsecan House, Saligao)

[Goanet]Bases and Business: How would Goa stack up?
http://www.the-dispatch.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050416/APN/50416052 0cachetime=5 AP State News April 16. 2005 12:14AM N.C. sees opportunity, not threat, in base closings By MARGARET LILLARD Associated Press Writer .. ... ... .. ... ... In a figure he fondly recites to all his audiences, Dorney points out that North Carolina ranks fourth among states in military presence, but 24th in the volume of business it does with the Defense Department. The Pentagon spent $202 billion in 2004, but only $2 billion of that sum in North Carolina - less than one percent, he says. Given the number of installations in the state, Dorney argues, North Carolina companies ought to have a thriving trade in military contracts. While they may not build tanks and guns, he said, state firms ought to be providing simple services such as housekeeping or food services. That's not the case, Dorney says, possibly because local companies don't know how to seek such contracts or, more often, because they don't realize they exist. You remember in the old days, they had the privates on KP, peeling potatoes? he asked his audience of about 30 in Kinston. They don't do that any more. They pay someone to come in and do those jobs. .. ... ... .. ... ... ..

[Goanet]Re:guns versus butter
A few quick reactions to keep the communication process going: 1) The diffidence to discuss the subject on goanet is misplaced. Remember that you were the one who played the security card in the first place! So you have got to be prepared to walk the talk. Sorry to say you evaded the issue of security and focused instead on some vague national aspirations and guns vs butter the NEXT item on the agenda. In general, nothing you have said so far would be music to the ears of us in Goa. 2) You have emphasised the issue of protecting maritime trade interests. This is perhaps to show that the Navy is alive to the concern about bread and butter. But you may have inadvertently landed in the drink in the process. Protecting economic supply lines often aganst the odds during war time is one thing. But in peace time? When the Coast Guard is specifically charged with this responsibility to a large extent? The Navy may be getting distracted from its military role! More importantly you seem to have a persistent blind spot about civilian AIR traffic and its specific importance to Goa. Why dont you have a word to say about the Navy's stranglehold on Dabolim flights? Self serving comments like I never have problems flying from Dabolim just dont help in the face of massive evidence to the contrary! We need evidence to support your starry eyed claims about the Navy's knowledge about aviation, civil and military. 3) The Navy's annual show and tell program along with your archived goanet post (to which I think I have replied) are all very well and good. But in this internet era the Navy may have to be prepared to communicate a little more frequently and meaningfully with hosts like the people of Goa for long term and mutual benefit. There is no excuse for a big communication gap on the grounds of (usually) either a lack of intelligence or a lack of patriotism.
