Battle of nerves for BJP & Congress to form government
By Mayuresh Pawar, Panaji, June 1, 2005:

Political parties are claiming their victories in the bye-elections for the
five assembly constituencies, but it seems to be a 'battle of nerves' for
the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to form the government.

Normally, the bye-elections are taken so seriously. But this time, the

presence for the electioneering campaigns.

The BJP on other hand has been beating the drums of victory in all the five

In this regard, Digital Goa interacted with the BJP stalwarts--former chief
minister Manohar Parrikar and BJP president Rajendra Arlekar--who stated
that their 'lotus' cannot bloom in the Benaulim seat. "After conducting
extensive campaign in all the five assembly segments, we realized that the
BJP will win only four seats," the confident Arlekar.

According to BJP sources, the UGDP will tie-up with the BJP and form the
government under the leadership of Manohar Parrikar.

"It's the matter of formation of the government and we are confident that my
government will be in power," former chief minister Manohar Parrikar said
adding, "People want to see our government in power."

Congress spokesman, Jitendra Deshprabhu said, "The BJP has 'looted and
scooted' the people of Goa in the name of development, you tell me why the
people should franchise their precious votes for the BJP."

He further said that the Congress will provide the stability in the State
henceforth. "We will expose the BJP, who swindle the government treasury and
the people's money."

It looks a joke when the Congress speaks about bringing stability to the
Goan Democracy. There are already five contenders from the Congress
camp--Babush Monserrate, Isidore Fernandes, Dayanand Narvekar, Luizinho
Faleiro, Pratapsingh Rane--who wish to become the chief minister of Goa.

However, Deshprabhu maintained that the High Command will take the
appropriate decision to choose the leader. He certainly made it clear that
the Rane is not there leader.

When asked about his interest to be the chief minister, Deshprabhu keeping
silence for a while said, "I can't think of that. There are senior leaders
in the party and one of them will be chosen as our leader."

Congress leader Shantaram Naik was very optimistic to claim that the
Congress would win all the seats. "Our government is ruling at the Centre
and we are sure of getting back to the power in Goa as well," he said.

Replying to a question, Naik disagreed to the reports of Churchill working
against the Congress-NCP alliance.

Five assembly segments--Taleigao, Cumbharjuem, Margao, Benaulim and
Poinguinim--goes to the poll on June 2 and the results will be declared on
June 5. And then, the number game will begin in search of a new government.

Dear Jose,

Just a brief exchange of information; I am also a morador, in the village of
my birth, just acroos the river Sal. My ancestry is from, and Gaoncari from
Chinchinim. However I have no strong links; I am not bothered to find out
who receives the Zhon on my ancesters bahalf.

Also, in my vilage where I lived until migration; I used to get together
with all the village people, including Gaoncares, one of whom was and is my
best man/family friend. In fact I used to hold BBQ parties (first in Goa)
etc for a lot of persons, friends, relatives from Dona Paula, Panjim,
Porvorim, Madgaon, Benaulim etc. My home used to resound with the sound of
music and friendship partying! But all that does not condone the tribal
divide. However, to my surprise, I realised that these friendships in the
village specially, did not run very deep, and were camouflaged to hide the
real inherent differentiation; not hate, of course.

When I talk of apartheid in the Church; I am talking of the Kunbis and
Gawdas and those in the fishing trades and other labour intensive village
work, who are not gauncares. When I was last in Goa, in Nov-Jan 2005; I was
pleasantly surprised to find some of the Kunbi children, who used to
befriend my kids among others, are well educated and spoke fluent English;
everytime I tired to practice my Konkanni, I was lured back to English by
the sheer fluency on the part of the kunbi kid. this young woman has been to
Finland and lived in their Finnish Home, but yet to live in a Goan Gauncaree
or higher caste home. How heinous the caste system?? That is commendable
progress, limited though it may be for this woman. Whither Goa and India??

But , the Church affairs are yet the same old system, and yet to change for
democratic and equality norms. The Gauncares still celebrate the main feasts
and still administer and control the affairs of the Church, without any
recognition or input from other residents.
The only notable change in 'pews' I noticed is that the pews are now put
right in front and the benches behind; perhaps trying to lure the church
elite to sit and reflect closer to the altar..

The real difference I noted is that the Morador people and the working class
people , no longer look up to the so called elite in the villages. They take
pride in their own and have worked themselves up, to compete successfully
with the old elite to become the new elite, to a great extent. Viva
progress! Viva the new Goa!

Dear Nasci,
However, I must have missed something. I have not yet seen the voting for
the Panchayat elections divided on the basis of who is Gaumcar and who is
not.

I truly must have missed something!

Also, at St Francisco Xavier Church in Velim, I have not seen any
differential seating for Gaumcars v Moradors. As my good neighbour in Velim
Mr. Ben Antao (a Gaumcar of Velim) will attest, neither he nor I knew who
was the "Morador" and who the "gaumcar" till the age of the Internet. In
Velim, we visit each other's houses and celebrate feasts together.
And I don't believe we care much to vote for the Panchayat elections -
as all the elections produce, is another layer of crooks. That is an Indian
Gorr-mental gift to Goa.
Now did you just say that the Communidade System was akin in its
effect to the Caste System? Really?

my friend, you have NO idea of what the Caste System has done!

Hi Tony,
Many thanks for enlightining me, and others, about the Catholic Goan caste
situation in Tanzania. You sure have more horror stories than I have over
caste based interaction!

When I have some time, I will send Goanet a post on my observation, with
others, of the temporary 'dilution' of caste awareness/intensity, borne out
of necessity, when large numbers of young Goans came to London, singly, in
the 1960s, prior to many of their parents subsequently joining them. This
relatively short period also preceded the establishment of Goa village-based
associations in London. These I have never approved of because I felt that
they had the seeds of caste within them which would germinate and take root
in time.

Regards,
Cornel

I am also aware that at the Goan Gymkhana,Nairobi, non-Brahmin males
who were admitted after independence, were refused dances by Brahmin
girls; whilst male brahmins never danced with female non-brahmins
even though in some cases, they were classmates their entire school
life.

Dear Melinda,

At the outset let me thank you for responding to my queries. I had thought
that there would be other parents, specially mothers, on this forum who
would be interested in the topic of 'bringing up children'. Looks like they
are happy to just lurk around and occasionally complain about the never
ending debates on Bush, homosexuality, religion etc. but not be proactive
in participating in a discussion that is more immediately relevant.

Melinda, I agree with all that you have said in your e-mail and I guess for
a person with a strong religious conviction it is far easier to be an
ethical parent than for a 'doubting Thomas' like me.

I would like though to examine the concept of telling 'white lies' to
children. I have occasionally had to take recourse to such white lies and
feel guilty about not having a better solution.

The best example is Santa Claus. At least it is as far removed as one can
get from the taboo topics of 'religion' and 'sex' on this forum.

On the one hand I feel I should tell my sons that there is no real Santa
Claus. On the other hand I don't want to take away from them that sense of
anticipation, mystery and wonder which surrounds the arrival of the
Christmas presents. And the related myths. So how do I get past this by
telling a harmless white lie; that a Santa Claus does indeed exist at the
North Pole and that he does have a Toy Workshop and Elves and Reindeers and...

Some years from now when they find out the truth about Santa Claus will
they resent the fact that I lied to them? Did I hold any resentment towards
my parents when I found out the truth? None at all. Do we put too much
pressure on ourselves as parents to be completely truthful when our
children themselves wouldn't be less bothered about the ethics involved and
just take it as a part of growing up?

Re: [Goanet] Emails from Mario Goveia's address

2005-06-02 Thread cornel

Hi Gabriel,
Many thanks for your very reasoned and pleasant reply.

I think most of us, (except perhaps Mario) are agreed that no one Western
country has all the good points compared to any other. However, without a
doubt, Australia has a great deal going for it, and perhaps, if I were
younger, I might have been tempted to consider it as an alternative to the
UK for several reasons.

However, I have often wondered as to why such a huge continent has only
about 20 million people (apparently the annual birthrate of India) even
granted that the middle is largely desert. The view I consistently get is
that "it is too far away from anywhere else...and one is too isolated
there." Of course this depends on where one is looking from, but at present,
flight times are incredibly long but once these are hopefully reduced, OZ
should become a more favoured destination I think. My last trip there from
London took 11 hours to Tokyo and then another nine to Sydney. Even though
my family and I enjoyed the business class we happened to get at a reduced
rate and our bit of the plane was virtually empty, the trip there and back
was an absolute slog. Yet, I'd like to visit again but may have to travel on
my own next time, to this great faraway destination!

Regards,
Cornel
PS I particularly liked your city Melbourne, even though it just happened to
be bitterly cold and windy there on a Christmas day-- something I had least
expected!

RESPONSE: This is perhaps true of one may be two Village Associations,

and it is gratifying to note that we have raised several thousands of

I think Cecil's Kashmir holiday request was in jest (is it safe to travel there

Cecil's humour and
it is only fitting we collectively thank him. We should share in the cost of
Cecil's holiday to a

holiday and I will chip
in. I am sure others will contribute too not because Cecil is in need (I have
no idea of his
personal finances and he could very well afford to send us on holidays), but
because it is
important Goans acknowledge the joy a fellow Goan has provided through his
humourous postings. I
also wish to add that offline he has been very helpful and generous with his

P.S. We should also thank Dominic in some way for his 'nostalgia' postings.
Perhaps, in his case,
we should pledge to buy a few copies of his book when it comes out.

Mario opines:
I will let other Goanet philosophers comment on the
curious color identification of "white" lies as OK and
"black" lies as bad, but it seems to me you draw the
line at whether any harm is being caused or not, which
may be a parental judgement call. I once heard a
psychologist ask a person who wanted to be brutally
honest with a friend to consider whether the truth, in
that case, would help or cause harm to the other
person or their relationship. That seemed like a
decent enough criterion to apply.

BTW, I'd like to hear from Goanetters who have grown
up to be psychological basket cases because they
learned at about seven or eight years of age that
their parents had "lied" to them about Santa Claus.

[Goanet]SARNews: Theology Is A Service To Foster Life: Felix Wilfred (Desmond de Souza CsSR)

2005-06-02 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)

Theology Is A Service To Foster Life: Felix Wilfred

By Fr. Desmond de Sousa CsSR, SAR News
PANAJI, Goa (SAR NEWS) -- Dr. Felix Wilfred is internationally recognised
as one of the most distinguished priest-theologians of India. He was the
head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Thought, University of
Madras, and a member of the International Theological Commission of the
Vatican and secretary of the Theological Advisory Commission of the
Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences.

After eleven years of training in Europe, he returned to India and was
confronted and haunted by the stark poverty, abysmal misery and
destitution of millions of the people in the country. His classical
mindset began to crumble in the face of the questions affecting the daily
life of the people. His books, including 'On the Banks of the Ganges:
Doing Contextual Theology', are a living testimony to his disciplined
search for answers.

For Father Wilfred, "Theology is a service to foster life, to protect it
from various threats and uphold it." In the encounter between daily life
and faith, theology is like the midwife, assisting in birth and growth of
faith and enhancing life.

The Ganges is the place of his reflections. "This mighty river, winding
its way through most of the north Indian territory, stands for Indian life
and context. On the fertile banks of this river, life is carried on
uninterruptedly. Vegetation flourishes; people are born on its banks and
after death their bodies get dissolved in the waters of the Ganges. On its
banks people do cultivation, transact business; on its banks people squat
and silently meditate on the Ultimate. The Ganges then symbolises the
divine that passes through our lives making everything alive and
flourishing; it signifies the continuous flow of divine grace right
through our life and its innumerable expressions."

Indian Theology has to take seriously India's multi-cultural
and multi-religious context. The method of Indian theology is not so much
'faith seeking understanding' (classical definition) or 'love seeking
understanding' (Jesuit Jon Sobrino), but 'faith seeking dialogue' - "a
dialogue that is open-ended. It leads us into the depths of the mystery,
to understand which we need to be in continuous journey with others.

"Indian Approaches to the Divine Mystery will make a very original and
significant contribution to the cause of women by its encounter with the
Hindu tradition on the feminine aspect of the divine mystery."

Indian Liberation Theology "is an attempt to overcome the violence on
God-given life, help the people regain it and accompany them on their path
to pooranam (fullness and integration). The place of this challenge of
liberation is the Dalits (marginalised) of India, who constitute about 20%
of India's population, 75% of Indian Christians and are among the 48% of
Indian population living under the poverty line.

Relevant interpretations of Christ in contemporary India present daunting
challenges. Christ must become relevant to two diverse strands within
Indian society. The classical, intellectual, elitist strand of Hindus like
Bengali convert Keshub Chander Sen and others of the 19th century Indian
renaissance, claim some mystical experience of Jesus Christ which has had
a lasting influence on their life. The other strand is of the struggling
poor and marginalised in India.

The traditional spiritual richness of the one and the earthy power of
meaningful interpretation of the other, provide possibilities of mutual
critique and corrective. Relevant interpretations of Jesus Christ for
India will emerge out of their creative interactions.

Being a Christian community in India, characterised by many violent
conflicts on the basis of religious identity, castes, ethnic assertions,
presents a major challenge to the Church. The realisation of the Holy
Spirit working outside the boundaries of the Church is crucial. The Church
as a mystery of communion must forge close links of communion with their
neighbours of other faiths. The ideal of a Church at the service of the
Kingdom of God in India will be a great inspiration.

It is in facing these and many other challenges in India's historical
context and fulfilling its historical mission that a true Indian Church
will emerge, according to Father Wilfred.

[Goanet]POPE JOHN PAUL THE GREAT!

Dear Friends,

I am writing to tell you about a wonderful new internet campaign that will
publicly acclaim our dearly departed Holy Father as JOHN PAUL THE GREAT.

As you may know, only two Popes in history have ever become known as "The
Great." The first was Gregory the Great (d. 604) and the second was Leo the
Great (d. 461).

I have come to know that this only ever happens by public acclamation. The
title "Great" is not given by the Vatican. It is only given by the public
acclamation, by you and me.

Did you know that at his funeral the people there in St. Peter's Square were
actually chanting "Magnus, Magnus, Magnus" meaning "Great, Great, Great." It
IS happening already! And you can help.

Please go to this website --- http://www.c-fam.org/cgi-bin/jpthegreat.pl ---
and sign the petition! And then, send this note around to as many family and
friends as you possibly can! Just cut and paste this note to your whole
address book.

You can help in this great campaign. Again, the web site is:

Sign the petition and then cut and paste this message to your contacts!

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am confused, poor me! Please, someone please tell me what is the
difference between the 'bullock cart' and the 'gaddo'!!!

Gaddo and bullock-cart are same.

However, what Peter probably refers to is the "gaddi",
the "boilanchi-gaddi":

It was a quaint wooden box on "gaddo" wheels and pulled
by a pair of oxen.

Garishly painted, with tiny windows and entrance from the rear,
it was very convenient "sossegado" mode of travel, but
exclusively, within Bardez.

Nowhere else, in Goa, was it known.

By a considerable stretch of imagination, it was a remote

In our property, in Paliem, Uccassaim there were at least a

Pity, not even a single one exists. I tried to get one.

Hi Cornel & Tony:

Thanks for the very informative posts. I notice many ex-East Africans Goans
write elegantly, your
schools taught well. Stylistically, you have much in common - including Gabe,
Milton, Eddie
Fernandes.

I am curious now about the caste issue in Goan Associations in other migrant
populations - Goans
in Portugal, North America, Australia. Sometimes people trade one prejudice
for another. So if
they gave up a caste prejudice, have they taken on another? In the USA, the
Goans I have met do
not carry their caste credentials openly. However, I wonder sometimes if they
look at
African-Americans as favorably as they do others.

27/5/2005 - India trip turned into a 'nightmare'

'Terrified': ordeal of mum unable to pay hostel bill

Prudence Fenn hoped joining her daughter on a trip to Goa would be an
idyllic start to the teenager's gap year travels.

But Mrs Fenn, 53, told last night how the dream holiday turned into a
nightmare that has put her off returning to the sun-soaked region.

Mrs Fenn, from Kidmore Road, Caversham Heights, joined daughter Lucy
Pearson in the popular Indian resort of Bardez at the start of the
19-year-old's trip.

Mrs Fenn said she thought the ?6-a-night tariff for the hostel they were
staying in included activities such as elephant washing and did not
realise these were actually extras which cost around ?12 each.

The pair had to cut their three-day stay short by a day and on settling up
faced a ?150 bill, Mrs Fenn said.

They were forced to write and read out a letter of apology to the hostel
owner and promise to pay him the balance of the bill, which they did not
have the funds to cover.

"The most we could find was about ?120. He wasn't letting us go and wasn't
negotiating," she said.
"I was becoming more crippled with fear. He was getting angrier and
angrier, screaming and shouting. He thrust himself forward, tore the money
out of my hands.

"I was beside myself with fear.

"He said I was an absolute disgrace coming to his country with this amount
of money. Lucy was sobbing her heart out. She thought he was going to kill
us."

Lucy, a former Highdown School and Henley College pupil, had to write and
read out: "I, Lucy Elizabeth Lourde Pearson owe the owner
Rs 2,100 [about ?25]. I will send this to him as soon as I have cashed my
traveller's cheques. I apologise for the way my mother has behaved and I'm
aware we have both behaved unreasonably."

The pair left for another hostel in Anjuna.

Mrs Fenn said she should have reported the incident to police but did not
want to spend the last few days with her daughter worrying about it. She
added it would be their word against the owner's.

Mrs Fenn also said she was unsatisfied with the Foreign Office's response
when she approached it.

"They have done absolutely nothing," she said. "They said we should have
contacted the police out there. I'm well aware of that but I was in a
state of complete fear and terror and terrified for my daughter's safety.

"The local people said the police are corrupt."

Mrs Fenn said the experience has put her off returning to India. She said:
"I think it's absolutely wicked and evil."

Foreign Office spokesman Pasquale Lamanno told the Evening Post: "It seems
to have been a private dispute between Mrs Fenn and the hostel owner over
paying some money.

"I think the point she was trying to get across is she didn't receive any
help from us in paying that money and that's something we do not and
cannot do."

The hostel owner could not be contacted to comment.

#5: < Viva progress! Viva the new Goa! >

Dear Nasci,

Thank you for your comments

Re: #1: I must confess that I have seen none of that in Velim. And this
whole concept of "Gaumcars" and "Moradors" which is high-velocity in
Cuncolim is totally meaningless in Velim. Ownership of land is private and
"leases" of land (for agri or mariculture) continue as per the much maligned
Portuguese system of "auction".

re: #2: There is NO "zhonn" of significance available these days. Some
"zhonncars" get a rose as their annual return. Even Carambolim which used to
provide the highest zhonns in Goa ( ~ 30,000 esc per zhonncar per year in
the pre-1961 days ) has been properly "swiped".

So...this Communidade which (because of the lake and 2nd crop) used to be
the granary of Goa, has been reduced to rubble courtesy Candeth, Bandit-ker,
Corruption and the Konkan railway.

No wonder - the zhonn vaults are empty, and Goa imports rice from Out of
state.

re: #3: Again, my experience in Velim has been quite different. I have not
seen any special pews for anybody though I do see a lot of OUTSTANDING
CATHOLICS (those who stand outside the church).

Not that being inside the church would make any difference to these
"outstanding catholics". The language the sermao is preached ... is kind of
a bad version of Nasal Marathi.

re: #4: Respect is no longer a given. It has to be earned. And while
fleeting respect may be bought, long term respect for a person has other
markers which include Education and the Un-Buyability.

Money is important but can no longer be the sole criterion for respect. Even
dope dealers and con artists have money ...

The questions have been, and always will be: CAN the person be BOUGHT? and
IS the person going to PERFORM solely for poixe?

As far as Velim is concerned, every single Kunbi family has somebody in the
Gulf. Almost all young children are being educated at St. Xavier's School
and on to either Loyola and Fatima in Margao.

Sodon't knock the Catholic Church that quickly. Despite ALL the
deficiencies, the Catholic Church has been the single most effective
dismantler of the Horrid Caste System. That is the reason why the Rt Wing
Hindus hate the Catholic Church. For "converting" (i.e. educating) the poor.

I'll wager this bet anytime. More than half of the virulent Rt. Wing
Hindu idealogues have taken advantage of the Catholic education
systemwhether it be the Jesuit system (eg St Patrick's In Karachi or St.
Paul's in Belgaum) or the Salesian system (Don Bosco's Panjim)

Have the ungrateful &*&&^% given back anything to the Catholic System ?
Yes Unmitigated Abuse.

The same thing with those in Goa who have benefitted most from the
Portuguese.

Education makes a difference. The educated know the difference between a
thiefing "social worker" and an honest "joe or jane".

[Goanet]NEWS: India opens huge new naval base

2005-06-02 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)

India opens huge new naval base
Indian warships
The facility will eventually be able to berth 42 ships
India has opened a new naval base on its Arabian Sea coast which it says
will become one of the largest in Asia.

The base at Karwar in south-western Karnataka state will have space for 42
warships and deep water for an aircraft carrier and nuclear submarines to
dock.

It fulfils a long-standing demand by India's navy for an exclusive
facility.

Until now Indian naval bases have had to share space with commercial
ports, leaving them congested and vulnerable to attacks.

The BBC's Sunil Raman in Bangalore says the INS Kadamba base covers 4,400
acres and will become the biggest operational base in India.

Delays

"This base is of strategic importance," Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee
said at the new base in Karwar.

"With the commissioning of this base, the navy will fulfil the
responsibility of defending the country and safeguarding its exclusive
economic zone."

The base has been commissioned 19 years after its foundation stone was
laid, mainly because of delays due to funding problems.

But in 2000, the Indian government decided to make it a priority and
channelled huge funds towards the project.

Presently, the base can berth around 11 ships but the number will rise to
42 in the next couple of years.

A ship-lifting system built by European engine maker Rolls Royce at a cost
of $35m will become operational by the end of this year.

Try explaining to teenagers why their father went from encouraging them to
accompany him to daily Mass and reflecting on the mysteries of the Rosary to
the inability to honestly make the 'sign of the cross' any longer. It IS all
about telling 'white lies'. Children have an innocence and simple faith in
believing what we, their life support system, tells them is true. We, in turn,
believe what we are told by those we hold in highest esteem, as the
Truth. However, on deep questioning of these 'truths' we find inconsistencies
that are irreconcilable, it is easy to become a 'doubting Thomas' and more!

I have resolved not to tell any more 'white lies' that I am not completely
convinced of the truth.

Did you see how many adults have tears in their eyes when watching the annual
December re-releases of "Miracle on 34th Street"? These would be the same
adults who will go to see the annual Lenten re-releases of the "Passion".

Successful parenting is finding a way of easing the transitions between literal
to figurative truths without losing face.

Kids are getting smarter and smarter every generation and what worked for our
generations may not work for theirs when they get their information from so
many other sources than their parents. My solution is to be as truthful as
possible leaving yourself enough wiggle room to mature the story-line as your
child grows up. However, past the age of mid-late teens, you will have to
accept that they are young adults and need to be treated as such, including
frank discussions on all taboo subjects before they have their immature minds
filled by other sources.

CHENNAI: Accusing BJP president L K Advani of having "betrayed" the
Hindus, VHP working president Ashok Singhal on Thursday demanded a
public apology from him for describing the December 6, 1992 Ayodhya
incident as the "saddest" day of his life.
"He (Advani) should publicly apologise. He has betrayed the Hindus of
our country. Regretting now, particularly from Pakistani soil, is an
insult to 90 crore Hindus," Singhal told reporters here.
Alleging that Pakistan was behind the jehadi movements in various parts
of the country and for the Kargil war, he said Advani's statement, that
too from Pakistani soil when he had himself accused Pakistan of waging
proxy war in India, "is most shameful".
On friendship with Pakistan, Singhal countered "friendship for what? To
enhance jehadi movement?."
He claimed 43 per cent of districts in India were facing the problem of
terrorism. "Who is teaching them, (terrorists) who is providing
training to them," he asked.
Referring to the "desaffronisation" of history lessons from schools by
the Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, he claimed
that despite strong historical evidence, the students were now being
taught "obsolete" theories like Aryans invaded India.

Among the Hindus, learning their ways

May 22, 2005

Midtown Yoga teachers Kathy Fish and Margot McNeely enjoyed a yoga retreat
in Goa, India, with two accomplished veteran teachers.

Fish shared the experience with her sister, Sheila Cullen, a yoga
instructor from Toronto.

They studied the Hindu-based system of exercises meant to help achieve
bodily and mental control and well-being with Canadian teacher Hart Lazer,
who has been teaching and practicing yoga for more than 20 years.

They also had the opportunity to study with Father Joe Pereira, a
Catholic priest and Iyengar-trained yoga teacher who runs Mother Teresa's
28 Kripa Centers throughout India.

Additionally, the group got to participate in Holi, the festival of
colors, a Hindu celebration similar to a rites of spring where people roam
the streets with packets of dye and colored water bombs.

And helping bring the experience back home, Midtown Yoga on South Cooper
will host a yoga workshop with Hart Lazer the weekend of June 3-5.

There will be two sessions available, one for beginning students and one
for intermediate/advanced. This is Lazer's second time to visit Memphis.

Lazer will blend his knowledge of the alignment principles of Iyengar yoga
with an ashtanga-focused practice.

His knowledge of yoga and anatomy is inspiring to students and teachers.

in Delhi and Panaji/Porvorim. Arlekar may still get to taste his "Karma-cho
bhog" or balchao courtesy Karl Vaz at the next hustings. He may also regret
hustling the hustlers in a hurry as his guru did about the VCD.

In the meanwhile, my neighbour Matthew Braganza is waiting for the ex-Law
Minister to pay up for taking law in his own hands and joining Mandrekar in
breaking his Mandarin Hotel in Mapusa. Sadanand[meaning" Always happy"] Shet
Tanavde will no longer be happy and may be thinking why he has to go through
this "tanhayi"...as ex-Chairman of GTDC he could possibly wish Ethel da
Costa had planned a "Great Escape " for him instead of the 'Grape Escape'
for his GTDC. Instead of a tour abroad, he would be happy to take a
walkaway from it all. But the criminal case apart, Matthew has slapped a
civil suit for damages to a tune of Rs.2.35 lakhs. There is alway a price to
pay...when the party is over. ;-( Ms Megha Dhond, who a relative of BJP's
Margao candidate Sharmad Raiturkar, may be having a similar chain[ or
handcuff] of thought. Impersona non grata?
