[Goanet]When Fenny Travels to Sweden...

2005-07-21 Thread Clinton Vaz
Fenny they say is an acquired taste. In the 1990's, my father did export our
own fenny with the name 'Donna Maria' once, to the gulf, but its was
unviable as the market was small (just for the Goans working there). Here in
India, fenny is very popular with the domestic tourists as fenny not only is
cheap, but gives a great kick and has a 'Goan' image to itself. Is there a
market for fenny outside India?

When I visited Sweden in 2003, I carried 2 bottles of Cashew fenny, and some
sausages among other things from Goa for my friends there.

Apparently Goans living there already had stocked their share of sausages
from Goa, but the cashew fenny was welcomed. However, when I let some of my
Swede friends try some fenny they all found it disgusting and wondered how
we Goans could drink the stuff. According to them, fenny contains something
called as 'finkle' which must be removed using charcoal and filtration
before it can be called a 'drinkable arak spirit' like tequila and schnapps.
My friends dared others to try the fenny, and almost all of them could not
go beyond a sip. Some didn't even taste it as they found the smell
disgusting. (But I love the smell.) The Goan pork sausages however, was a
big hit. I had just 10 packets, and it was swiped with everybody coming back
for more, even though it was 'terribly spicy' by Swedish standards! I have
yet to find a Swede that likes fenny. :-(

I hear that in Sweden, they have something called Aquavit, which is a
homemade equivalent of cheap alcohol and could be dangerous to drink since
it is usually bootleg versions that available. But before I returned, I did
bring back some Absolut Vodka (ofcourse!) and a bottle of 'Swedish Punsch
which I thought was like fenny. According to me tastes a little sweeet,
similar to cashew fenny, but minus the flavor and smell of cashew. Funnily
enough, the Swedes suggest pea soup as an accompaniment.

What I miss most though is the fruit based ciders which have a low alcohol
content. Mm

Mapusa July 20: Stating that the proposed airport at Mopa in Pernem
would generate around 7,500 jobs of different skills, the Pernem MLA,
Mr Jeetendra Deshprabhu urged local students to qualify themselves for
these employment opportunities.
He also said that Pernem would be coming under the Special Economic
Zone (SEZ) for which, the students should be prepared.
According to a press release, Mr Deshprabhu was speaking as the chief
guest of the function held to felicitate the last batch of graduates at
the Government College of Arts and Commerce, Virnoda-Pernem, recently.
He strongly proposed a science stream at the college, with residential
facilities for about 30 students. Mr Deshprabhu also launched the
Ex-students (Alumni) Association of the college on the occasion.
Lauding the efforts of the principal, Dr B A Gomes in taking the other
government colleges of Sanquelim and Quepem to high levels of
accreditation by NAAC, Mr Deshprabhu said he had the same expectations
for the Government College at Pernem.
In his welcome address, Dr Gomes elaborated on the purpose of the
get-together and appealed to the students to rise up to the values
learnt through the college and be an important component of the college
functioning.
Ms Prajakti Kavthankar who secured distinction at TYBA (Hindi), in the
April/May 2005 examination, was felicitated by the special invitee and

[Goanet]EVEN NAGPUR IS GETTING AHEAD!

2005-07-21 Thread Philip Thomas
Recently the TIMES OF INDIA has been carrying reports about the development
of Nagpur especially in connection with the proposed multimodal
international hub at the airport there (abbrev MIHAN).

This is touted as a Rs 5000 crore project involving may be 8000 acres.
(Compare this with Rs 5000 crores for the modernisation of Mumbai and Delhi
airports TOGETHER and Kochi airport's footprint of a measly 1300 acres).
MIHAN is proposed to be made an SEZ (just as there is talk about the Mopa
area) centred on aircraft mantenance and even construction.

The interesting thing for us is the report "No parking takes new airlines to
Nagpur". (8/7/05) . It seems there is a severe shortage of overnight parking
bays for the aircraft of civilian airlines especially at Mumbai. As a
result, airlines are being advised to make use of airports of non-metros
(like Nagpur) for this purpose. In the process these airports get factored
into the route maps of the airlines. Or else, they would have to fly empty
to the metro from which they plan to originate and this would bleed the
bottom lines esp of new entrants.

Dabolim is half the distance to Mumbai as compared to Nagpur with attendant
savings in time and money. If it was possible to do so, the new airlines
would definitely make use of Dabolim as advised by the AAI re other
non-metro airports such as Nagpur, Coimbatore and the like. But the Navy
seems completely impervious to these considerations (while the state
government which is hand-in-glove is blissfully oblivious of them).

[Goanet]Malaria, mosquitoes... and bed-nets

2005-07-21 Thread Aloysius D'Souza
Hi everyone,

I studied at St Mary's Mount Abu -- 1947 to 1951 -- we used mosquito nets
(without chemicals) from begining of June to around
mid-September -- Though one was almost guaranteed to get malaria in Mount
Abu, I did not contract malaria in all those years,

But in Bombay in 1992 I got a real bad dose of malaria -- and a relapse in
1993 -- fortunately the vivax type and not the
falsipuram type. We do not use mosquito nets in this up-market Cumballa Hill
area of Mumbai.

I think this is adequate testimony of the effectiveness of mosquito nets in the
prevention of malaria.

Plus the additional factor that you are not forced to apply various types of
insect repellants or take un-necessary medicines, which
kill the malaria parasites inside you and we do not know how much damage these
same medicines do to our systems -- My Dad during
his days at the Burma front was required to take some anti-malaria medicine,
originally quinine but later an ICI drug which made all
these guys acquire a yellow colour -- maybe an un-intentional camouflage when
fighting the Japs!!!

Cheers

[Goanet]A MESSAGE from the President of G O A Toronto - on the occassion of their WORLD GOA DAY celebrations - VIVA GOA !

2005-07-21 Thread rene barreto

A message from the President of The G.O.A Toronto ,
  Oscar Furtado

Thursday, 23 June 2005

"The Goans from Toronto, who number in the thousands,
send their best wishes to Goans around the world as we
celebrate 'Goa Day' on August 20th. In Toronto we have
started our celebrations early as we host 'Viva Goa'
on July 23th, 2005.

We have designated our Viva Goa celebrations as our
Goa Day celebration as this is our way of showing our
solidarity to Goans around the world on this very
important day. Last year we had approximately 5,500
Goans in attendance. We expect this number to grow
this year as many Goans continue to attend from around
the world. The idea to have a day to celebrate our
heritage, culture, traditions, music and cuisine is a
great one. The Goan community should be proud of the
many important values we possess and our many
contributions to society. The one day celebration
gives us an opportunity to celebrate these values
while being able to share them with the various
communities around the world that we now call home.
Celebrating Goa Day 'United' around the world is the
first step in solidarity. The Goans from Toronto
continue to support the formation of an 'Alliance of
World Goa Organizations'. Such an alliance will
further strengthen our communities around the world.
As part of the ‘Alliance’ we need to focus on ways to
help Goans around the world. Since communication is
very important for any initiative, we need to first
identify the various forms of communication that exist
in the various Goan organizations around the world as
it is these channels that we will need to rely on.
Once we get past this phase, we will need to determine
what initiatives we would like to take on that would
strengthen our community around the world. Goans in
Toronto would like to thank Rene Barreto for his
efforts in uniting Goans Around the World for these
celebrations. It is this unity that will make us
strong! We need to build on this unity to ensure our
solidarity will benefit all Goans around the world.
Best Wishes on the 2005 celebrations!"

[Goanet]Campaign for Scheduled Caste rights for India's Dalit Christians

2005-07-21 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
16 Million Dalit Christians In India Must Get Full Scheduled Caste
Rights, Declares Public Tribunal

By SAR NEWS

MADURAI, Tamil Nadu (SAR NEWS) -- A public tribunal headed by the
Supreme Court of India’s retired judge, Mr. S.B. Sawant, and famed
jurist, Barrister Ms. Sona Khan, has declared that the 16 million Dalit
Christians in India should get their full Scheduled Caste rights enjoyed
by their Dalit counterparts of other minority religions.

“It is necessary that the Christian Dalits are given the same benefits,
aids and advantages, facilities and opportunities as are given to the
Dalits of Hindu, Sikh and neo-Buddhist religions on the basis of the
caste to which they belonged before conversion and which they are
carrying even today,” the tribunal said.

The historic judgment of the first-ever people’s tribunal hearings into
the almost six-decade-old struggle for constitutional rights came at the
end of a tumultuous day of hearings in Madurai, July 18.

Apart from Mr. Sawant and Ms. Sona Khan, the jury included Member of
Parliament, Mr. Karvendhan, president of the All India Bar Council,
former Labour joint commissioner, Mr. V.B. Balram, former Member of
Parliament, Dr. Kulandaivel, former Minorities Commission member, Mr.
Jawahar, State Women’s Commission former chairperson, Dr. Vasanthi Devi,
Dr. Lakshman, MIDA, Chennai, and Dr. Manikumar of Sundaranar University.

“The Dalit Christian People’s Tribunal, after recording evidence – both
oral and written – has come to the conclusion that it is highly
unrealistic socially and as well as legally to make distinction between
Dalits on the basis of religion,” the judgment said.

“It should not be forgotten that we are considering the social reality
of Indian life where the followers of all non-Hindu religions, other
than the Parsees, have been converts from the Hindu religion, except for
a microscopic minority,” the tribunal said.

“It is also unfortunately a sad reality that the converts have carried
their caste marks with them be it of higher caste or lower caste. As a
result, all the religious communities in India today, except the
Parsees, have an ingrained caste system prevalent in all spheres of
life.

“We assembled here to consider the special case of Dalit Christians who
were similarly converted from Hindu religion to Christianity and carried
with them the same disadvantages and disabilities and they are carrying
them even today. They will disappear, if at all, only when similar
disabilities suffered by the Dalits of other religions, namely the
Hindu, Sikh and neo-Buddhism, disappear,” Justice Sawant, Barrister Sona
Khan and the jury said.

As many as 573 witnesses from the southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu,
Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and the Union Territory of Pondicherry
registered at the public hearing. Hundreds of others witnessed the
proceedings. The tribunal heard 20 persons, and took written depositions
from others.

Documentary evidence on the entire case was presented to the tribunal by
Mr. John Dayal and Mr. Edward Arokia Doss on behalf of the organisers of
the National Movement for Dalit Christian Rights, Madurai, the All India
Catholic Union, the All India Christian Council and Voice of Dalit
International.

Earlier, lighting a kutthuvilakku (traditional brass lamp), Retired
Archbishop M. Arockiaswamy of Madurai said the Government should provide
benefits to the Dalit Christians on the basis of caste to which they
belonged and not discriminate them on religious grounds.

Dindigul Bishop Anthony Pappusamy said Dalit Christians were being
discriminated against and as a result had to forego all government
benefits meant for Dalits.

Mr. John Dayal told SAR News that the public hearings were held on the
eve of the Supreme Court of India taking up an appeal by the Public
Litigation Centre, New Delhi, on the Constitutional validity of existing
legislation, which denied affirmative action and special rights to many
people of former untouchable castes, including Dalit Christians, on
grounds of religion.

“Protection of the law and many privileges that are available to Dalits
of Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist faiths are denied to their brothers and
sisters who have embraced Christian or other faiths,” he said.

The public hearings were fully backed by Catholic and Protestant Church
leaders, the organisers claimed.

Advocate Mr. Edward Arokia Doss, the local convener, told SAR News that
the report of the tribunal would be sent to the President of India, the
Chief Justice of India and the judges of the Supreme Court of India, the
National Integration Council, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and to the
Prime Minister, the state chief ministers, leaders of national and state
political parties and other concerned organisations.

In their formal deposition before the tribunal, the
organisers, AICU, AICC and VODI said the founding fathers of the
Constitution of India and the freedom struggle leaders had not
discriminated against Dalit Chris

[Goanet]Challenges To The Church In India Today (Fr Desmond de Souza, CSsR)

2005-07-21 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Challenges To The Church In India Today
By Fr. Desmond de Sousa CSsR, SAR NEWS

PANAJI, Goa (SAR NEWS) -- The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance
coalition government at the Centre, despite constraints and its
perpetually whining Left partners, appears capable of completing its
five-year mandate.

The present Indian scenario highlights the following specific challenges
to the Church in relation to the government’s policy statement, the
Common Minimum Programme (CMP). It consists of the macroeconomic factors
affecting the four vital sectors: Agriculture, Employment, Education and
Health.

The CMP prioritises four aspects of sustained growth in human
development in harmony with the Catholic social teaching. The Church in
India has committed herself to improve the health of the poor.
Prevention is better than cure is familiar to the Church’s healthcare
network that reaches the poor at the grassroots level of the parish.

Closely related to improving health is the fundamental right to
education, where the Church in India has committed large resources in
money and personnel. This right is intimately linked to the right to
employment, especially in the rural agricultural sector.

However, after one year of UPA rule, the financial allocations to the
CMP are paltry, much to the disappointment and frustration of the Left
parties.

The Church in India cannot operate its own parallel programmes, but must
appear visibly supporting the pro-poor initiatives of the government.
Its network of 140-odd diocesan social service societies organising
numerous grassroots level programmes should not only emphasise an
integrated human development perspective containing these four core
sectors, but should be SEEN to be contributing to the CMP.

Every development programme should have political education content.
This means that people become aware of the programmes planned for them,
so that they organise political action to make the administration more
effective in delivering these promises. This makes for good governance
and eradicates corruption that thrives on the ignorance of the masses,
especially in the rural areas.

Alert at London tube stations and bus

Staff and agencies
Thursday July 21, 2005

Emergency services were scrambling to locations around London today
after reports of explosions at three tube stations and on a bus.
Services on three London Underground lines were suspended today after
incidents at three tube stations. There are no reports of casualties
at this stage, but emergency services are responding to reports of
incidents at Oval tube station in south London, Warren Street in
central London and Shepherd's Bush

Emergency services have also responded to reports of an incident on a
No 26 bus in Hackney Road, junction near Columbia Road, east London,
Scotland Yard said.
British Transport police said all of the stations were being evacuated.

Sofiane Mohellavi, 35, was travelling from Oxford Circus to
Walthamstow when he was evacuated from a train at Warren Street.

"I was in the carriage and we smelt smoke - it was like something was burning.

"Everyone was panicked and people were screaming. We had to pull the
alarm. I am still shaking.

"We pulled into Warren Street and were evacuated. It was horrible,"
she told the Press Assocation.

Victoria Line passenger Ivan McCracken claimed a traveller's rucksack
had exploded on the Tube outside Warren Street station. He told Sky
News: "I was in a middle carriage and the train was not far short of
Warren Street station when suddenly the door between my carriage and
the next one burst open and dozens of people started rushing through.
Some were falling, there was mass panic.

"It was difficult to get the story from any of them what had happened
but when I got to ground level there was an Italian young man
comforting an Italian girl who told me he had seen what had happened.

"He said that a man was carrying a rucksack and the rucksack suddenly
exploded. It was a minor explosion but enough to blow open the
rucksack.

"The man then made an exclamation as if something had gone wrong. At
that point everyone rushed from the carriage."

Mr McCracken said he smelled smoke but did not see any injured passengers.

Police said the first incident was reported at 12.54pm.

London Underground said they had suspended services on three lines as
a result of the incidents. A spokeswoman said: "We are responding to
reports of incidents at Warren Street and the Oval. There are no
reports of any casualties at this stage. We have suspended three
lines, the Hammersmith & City, Victoria and Northern."

Downing Street said that given the uncertainty over events, the prime
minister, Tony Blair, had cancelled a visit to a school in east London
this afternoon, at which he, the culture secretary, Tessa Jowell, and
Lord Coe had been due to publicise the second reading of the Olympics
bill.

The London mayor, Ken Livingstone, cancelled a visit this afternoon to
the Family Assistance Centre set up to help victims of the July 7
blasts in light of the current Tube incidents, a spokeswoman from
Westminster Council confirmed.

On July 7, two weeks ago today 56 people died when four suicide
bombers attacked three tube stations and a bus in the capital. The
Metropolitan police have warned of a risk of further attacks.

Fred, further to my earlier email, here are some tipsby Dr Deborah Mills, director of The Travel Doctortravel medicine clinic in Brisbane(http://www.fishingcairns.com.au/page8-5.html ):1. Cover up your skin. If you are outside between duskand dawn, wear treated long sleeved shirts, longpants, and long socks. Light coloured clothes are bestas dark colours attract mosquitoes. Strong scentsattract mosquitoes too, so avoid aftershave.2. Use mosquito repellent REGULARLY. 'DEET' (Diethyl toluamide) is definitely the mosteffective mosquito repellent for applying to yourskin. DEET based repellents, such as Repel and Rid,need to contain at least
30% DEET to be effective forprotecting adults under conditions of high mosquitoexposure. Repellents with over 50% DEET (such asBushman) are needed in areas of really intenseexposure. Apply regularly as per instructions on thebottle. When sunscreen is required, apply sunscreen first, wait 20 minutes and then apply repellent. Repellentsdecrease the number of bites you may get, butunfortunately, cannot stop mosquitoes entirely.3. Sleep in accommodation with screens or airconditioning and use a 'knock down spray' to removestray mosquitoes before retiring. 4. Permethrin treated Mosquito nets are essentialwhere the accommodation is not well screened. Incompletely unscreened conditions, burn mosquito coils, cover exposed skin in insect repellent, and sleep nextto a fan.5. Oral Vitamin B There has been quite a bit ofdiscussion about the role of Vitamin B in mosquitoavoidance. Taking large
quantities of vitamin B orallyunfortunately does not decrease the number of mosquitobites you get.Such an apparently simple solution tomosquito avoidance is appealing, but carefulscientific trials have failed to show any mosquitorepelling effects from taking oral vitamin B,including B1. There is some evidence that the use ofB1 will make any bites feel less itchy, but the riskof picking up nasty diseases is just the same as ifyou did not use it.Treating bed nets and clothes with Permethrin Permethrin is a highly effective synthetic insecticidewhich can be used to treat fabric. It is related tothe naturally occurring pyrethrum from the flowers ofa type of Chrysanthemum, and fabrics treated withPermethrin (bed nets, bed sheets, clothes, curtains)will kills or repel mosquitoes. Using treated items significantly decreases the numberof bites you get.One study showed treated nets werefour times more
effective than untreated nets.Insectsmust touch the fabric for it to work, so when you weartreated clothes, you still need to use repellent onexposed skin. You can buy items pre-treated(especially bed nets) or treat items yourself withcommercially produced Permethrin impregnation packs.Follow the treatment instructions carefully to get thefull effect. Articles which are treated and immediately sealed andstored in a plastic bag will retain effectiveness for12 months until usage is begun. A permethrinimpregnated mosquito net is effective for three to sixmonths of regular use. The solution wears off as wellas washes off.Clothes treated in this way are said tobe fully active for about one month, remainingeffective even after normal washing. Once the fabric is treated and dried, permethrin hasno vapour action and nets can be safely used evenaround sleeping children. Should a young child suckthe net, they
will not suffer any ill effects. Treateditems are not more flammable. Very occasionally, somepeople do develop minor skin rashes from the use oftreated clothes. [Goanet]linux/latex vs. microsoft

2005-07-21 Thread Marlon Menezes
Fred,

I am not pro microsoft or anti linux and dont have any
allegiences to any camp. 12 years ago (scary how time
flies) while writing up my MS thesis, I had a
nightmare using a variety of the well known microsoft
products and ended up doing some of my work on a mac.

4 years after that when it came time to write up my
phd, I did an evaluation of latex and microsoft on a
pc based platform on a microsoft OS. At that point it
was no contest. I had major problems with latex, but
no major issues with microsoft. In contrast, my
computer science roomates who had access to their own
unix based work stations pretty much all choose latex.

It is possible that things are different today. In any
case, word processing is a pretty generic application
today and there is so much of good freeware out there
that one wonders why anyone would want to pay for
something like this irrespective of one's OS
preference.

With regards to the endless debate of microsoft vs.
linux for mass/general use, it really does not matter
what is better today. Microsoft has established such a
persuasive stronghold on the market and such a massive
captive base over the past 3 decades, I do not see any
point in trying to fight it until the next disruptive
technology comes along. This next new thing, will have
to be significantly better or different to make the
current installed base irrelevant. Coversely for newer
apps such as web hosting, linux was initially
signifcantly superior to the then existing windows
plaforms resulting in it gaining a foothold that
microsoft has failed to eliminate to this date. Market
inertia can work both ways.

[Goanet]Rabbies in Goa, killed English woman.

Rabies kills holiday woman bitten by dog
Clarissa Satchell
A WOMAN from Bury has died from rabies after being bitten by a dog
while on holiday.

It is understood that the 33-year-old woman was taken to Fairfield
Hospital last week after falling ill days after returning from a
holiday in Goa, India.

She was then transferred to a hospital in Liverpool, but died from an
infection at the weekend.

Health officials in Bury said they had informed the Health Protection
Agency about the death, but insisted that the case did not pose a risk
to others.

A spokesman for Bury PCT said that all staff who had been in contact
with the woman at Fairfield Hospital, off Rochdale Road, including
nurses who treated her, had been informed about the death.

They had also been given routine inoculations, but no one else had
contracted the disease and it did not pose a threat to the public. The
identity of the woman has not been revealed.

Infection

The spokesman added: "We can confirm there has been a recent death
from rabies, which was contracted abroad - and did not pose a risk to
any one else.

"The relevant agencies have been informed, including the Health
Protection Agency."

Rabies, or "hydrophobia", is an acute viral infection which attacks
the nervous system and can be passed to humans from dogs, monkeys and
bats.

By the time the symptoms appear, they can no longer be treated and
nearly always lead to death.

However, there is a vaccine that can prevent the spread of the disease
as long as it is administered quickly following a bite.

A bat with a rare form of rabies was found dead by a passer-by in
Radcliffe, near Bury, last month. The Daubenton's bat was stunned
after flying into a tree.

Mogal Joel bab,

It was touching to read your article and I do agree
with every feelings of yours.

But life is not much different with we ( Gulfies )
Some are lucky to have their families with them( of
course only wife & children, parents & siblings are
not considered as family in gulf).

What about the rest of us, still considered as
bachelors ( for accomodation)though married!!!

We always tend to see one side of the coin, as what
we go through over here without our family with us. Do
we ever try to think of what our family go through
without us? Its neither easy for them to cope all
alone. All our Riyals, Dinar, Dolar, Euros cannot
replace us when they need us by their side at good or
bad times. They too suffer equally as we do.

All I can say is " Life itself is a sacrifice " So
buddy cheers up!! Its not that bad, we have to face
the truth.

And one sincere suggestion, Earn as much as you can
till you get married and when you get married see that
you settle down with your loved one, or else you will
have a " Banjara " life like us seeing our children
growing only on snaps!!

RE: [Goanet]Re: Postal Codes for anywhere in India

2005-07-21 Thread Nasci Caldeira

Hi all,

It seems that some of the spellings of names of villages/ places in Goa and
probably elsewhere, are wrong; as a result that when I filled in
'Cavelossim' in the search space of the site mentioned below, namely:
indiapost.gov.in/pinsearch1.asp it came up with 'not found'!
Then I tried 'cav' ; it took me to three places in Maharastra and UP. Oh my
God!

After having tried the site mentioned by Fred, namely:
amchegoa.com/pin_code_goa.htm I found it in the list! I then realised that
the name of the village has been wrongly spelled: 'cavalasim' instead of
cavelossim in the India Post site, thus rendering the search useless!

Will somebody in Goa try and bring this to the notice of the India Post
website and the Indian Post Office to correct this and all such errors
fortwith; since the parameter of 'name spelling' is of crucial inportance
in the search. This is thereason why I had suggested that it is the job of
the Post Office and the state agencies to popularise the codes locally and
encourage and enforce their use in each and every mail item. This is the
only way ti get the full benefit of the postal code regime. The people must
be told of the purpose and benefits of using postal codes, on addresses. I
bet some postal employees themselves do not know the extant and purpose of
these codes. Whither India!

RE: [Goanet]SC bans use of horns, loudspeakers, crackers after 10 pm

2005-07-21 Thread Nasci Caldeira

Hi all,

This order of the SC is very sound and is a long time coming. This should
have been incorporated into law, twenty or more years earlier! None of the
ploitical parties and coalitions, had the guts to enforce this 'Peace'
gaurauntee to all citizens. It does not encumber any religious or social
practices. It just enforces a decent noiseless and peaceful environment to
everyone.

This talk of midnight Mass and of Durga Processions and of Marriage
processions etc.by night; by using loud speakers and musical instruments,
without considering the noise polution and the
nuisance to others not able to take it; is sheer nonsense! Midnight Mass is
not banned! Mass can be said by confining the same to within the premises of
the Church Building, and without using loud music, loud singing and or
microphones. And of course no Foag! Mics and loud music and foag is not
'Liturgy' and not a requirement of performance of any religious ritual, and
in any religion!

For the sake of all; lets us agree in this and enforce its use and adherence
by all communities and persons irrespective of religion, and rank, caste or
otherwise!

Cheers!

Athletics chief coach unhappy with players, coaches

Wednesday, 20 July , 2005, 10:28 Panaji (Goa): Bahadur Singh, the chief
coach of Indian athletics team, has expressed disappointment over the
attitude of junior coaches and players.

Accusing them of not taking their professions seriously, Singh said:
"Our attitude is the main thing we are totally linked with our jobs
only, if we are paid for this we will come for two hours or three hours
only. I have seen in foreign countries there they (coaches and players)
are doing their jobs day and night and till the job is done there is no
question of relaxation. So, when the attitude will change, which is
currently going on and the coaches and administrators involve themselves
fully the results can definitely be seen."

Singh, 60, is still enthusiastic about shotputting, and wants youngsters
to win medals in international championships. He feels things are
improving but the pace is very slow.

Singh feels foreign coaches should be asked to train Indian athletes to
get better results.

"I have trained a number of sportsman who even won gold medals at the
Asian Games. But I am not able to train athletes to win gold in the
Olympics. People who have experience in training world champions, and
who have won gold medals, silver medals and bronze medals in Olympics,
we can definitely take advantage of it," added Singh.

Singh is currently preparing athletes for the Asian Championships due in
September, the Commonwealth Games in March 2006 and the Doha Asian Games
in December 2006.

Implement Kalasa-Banduri project: Babagouda Patil
Thursday July 21 2005 13:05 IST

DHARWAD: Babagouda Patil, Former union minister and farmer leader has
urged the central government to put in sincere efforts to remove hurdles
in way of implementing Kalasa-Banduri Nala project.

He was speaking at a seminar and felicitation programme organised by the
Malaprabha Farmers’ Action Co-ordination Committee, Karnataka Prantya
Raith Sangh and Agricultural labours association, University of
Agricultural Sciences at Town hall, Dharwad on Tuesday.

He said that vacating the stay order brought by Goa government on this
project and obtaining the clearance certificate from Forest and
Environment department were the main works to be done by the Centre to
start the work on this project.

G. N. Nagaraj, state secretary of CPM said that farmers should
themselves find out ways to solve their problems instead of hankering
after politicians.

Goan odyssey runs into rough weather

Lured into attractive contracts, players find themselves in a spot of
bother

JAYDIP SENGUPTA

Posted online: Thursday, July 21, 2005 at 0047 hours IST

KOLKATA, JULY 20: It may be fun and frolic on the beaches of Goa, but
like the East Bengal quartet has learnt, the city of Kolkata is anything
but forgiving. Alvito d’Cunha, Covan Lawrence, Bernard Pires and John
Dias had come to the city seeking greener pastures, but have instead run
into rough weather in their bid to represent the glamour club of Indian
football.

D’Cunha has been turning out for the red-and-gold brigade for four years
now, but even he wasn’t spared the wrath of coach Subhas Bhowmick for
breaching the deadline for arrival at the club. The gifted medio,
overshot the July 9 deadline by three days and had to sit out for as
many days, finally having to apologise to the club to get permission to
practice. Covan’s brother Climax played for East Bengal last season, but
left in a huff after the club officials decided not to renew his
contract.

This season, Covan’s case went to the Players’ Status Committee, but
since he had only registered for his previous club Mahindra United, but
had signed a contract and taken advance from East Bengal, the committee
ruled in the latter’s favour. It was an anxious wait that finally ended
on July 16.

‘‘I always wanted to play for East Bengal this season and the
committee’s decision proved that I have gone about it the right way,’’
he said.

Pires and Dias were, however, not so lucky, as they have been asked to
be present with their papers for the second hearing on July 27. Pires is
in the India camp for the tour to Fiji next month, but will have to take
leave for that hearing. Unlike Covan, he has signed contracts with both
his previous club Salgaocar and East Bengal, withdrawing for the former
and taking an inter-state transfer to the latter.

Dias’ case is the most complicated of all. Having played for Salgaocar
last season, he first renewed contract with his old club and then did
likewise with Dempo. Since it was an inter-Goan affair, Salgaocar
decided to release him. Dias then did the unthinkable. He took advance
from East Bengal and signed for them. But after pressure from the Goan
club, returned the money.

The matter didn’t end there, though. The East Bengal officials went to
Goa and convinced Dias to return Dempo’s money and come to East Bengal.
The Goan did just that, in the process achieving the dubious distinction
of signing for three clubs in a season. His fate now rests in the hands
of the Players’ Status Committee and even he is unsure of what to
expect.

‘‘I am really tense. I know I made a mistake, but I am hoping that the
AIFF committee takes a lenient view of my case,’’ he said. His case has
only been worsened by the fact that he turned out for East Bengal in the
tsunami benefit tie recently.

Gilbert,

I gave the prayer above to Ms. S. D'Souza. She wants to be married. In her own
unique Moira way,
she prayed for:
1. A wise husband.
2. An understanding husband.
3. A loving husband.
4. A forgiving husband.
5. A patient husband.

Being a devout practicing cafeteria Catholic (is there any other type?), her
prayer was answered.
She will marry all 5 husbands in Moira next month. Now she is praying for
strength to survive
them all. Thanks to you, these Goan marriages have been made possible ;-)

Regards,
George

[Goanet]RE: Yet more on information poverty in Goa... (2nd try)

2005-07-21 Thread Philip Thomas

[FN, July 20]

No doubt producing stage wise schedules of the myriad bus services plying in
Goa would be a big challenge for even a super computer! But jokes apart,
here is something by Joseph Zuzarte in "Dark underbelly of tourism" which
appeared in today's (July 21) HERALD:

"..people in the tourist trade say the charter tourist arrivals have been
dropping in the last three years while the Tourism Department claims
arrivals have been increasing. CAN ANY DIRECTOR OF TOURISM BE BELIEVED?"
(emphasis mine)

To my knowledge there may not be more than 15-20 flights a day at Dabolim.
Charter flights may only be an extra 2 or 3 per day on average during the
season. Then why is it so difficult to keep track of these minuscule
numbers, that too when they pertain to one of the pillars of the Goa economy
viz international tourism?

I wouldnt blame the Tourism Director alone. I would place the responsibility
mainly on the shoulders of the Navy which is supposed to be controlling the
airport. They dont seem to have much of a clue about the kind of "dash
board" civilian users need about airports. In all the recent talk about
infrastructure shortages at Indian airports, Dabolim never figures
(literally and figuratively) because of a severe lack of routine basic
operational information. And to think that the Goa government is relying on
the Navy for inputs for planning Mopa!! Heaven help us.

[Goanet]Book Review of the novel, "The Sixth Night" on The Epoch Times July 21-27, 2005

2005-07-21 Thread Bosco D'Mello
Book Review - The Sixth Night by Silviano C. Barbosa

By ZOE ACKAH

The Epoch Times July 21, 2005

The Sixth Night is a scaled down, James A. Mitchener style historical fiction
set mainly in colonial Goa. Admittedly, before reading the book I had no idea
where Goa was or that it was such a unique and interesting place. Those of you
who lived during the hippie era are probably more than familiar with Goa,
which gained great popularity as a tourist attraction in the 60s and 70s.

For those who don't know, located in India, Goa has been on the world stage
since the pre-Christian era, first documented by the Summerians around 2200
BC. It has been recognized as a fertile paradise by everyone who has been
there since.

In more recent history, Goa was colonized by the Portuguese for 400 years
until the 1960s. This creates and interesting cultural mélange. The population
is now 30 percent Catholic, 65 percent Hindu and 5 percent Muslim. The cuisine
and cultural traditions are a complimentary mix of Asian and European.

The Portuguese were expelled from Goa in 1961 when India "reclaimed" her. It
is precisely this point in history, the pivotal generation that experienced
Goa's return to India first hand, that the author explores.

Our main character, Linda, is a simply-drawn Catholic village girl of the
shudra caste. Battling caste discrimination with a stunning intellect, and a
childhood of good fortune, Linda is the first in her family to receive a high-
level education.

The book chronicles Linda's trials and tribulations as a woman, a shudra, and
a Catholic educated in Portuguese just as the English-language-dominated
Indian government takes over her homeland. She travels through Europe, ending
up in Toronto, Canada.

Having fathered a child by a Portuguese diplomat, from whom she is
accidentally separated during the turmoil surrounding Goa's transition to
Indian rule, Linda's story is the notable personal conflict in the novel.

The details of this conflict are described rather mechanically and
superficially. The emotions likely associated with the painful events
surrounding the adoption of Linda's child, and the emotions of the child
herself are suspiciously shallow. Indeed, the characters seem unbelievably
innocent after all they have been through. The likely consequences of their
suffering are left unexplored, and the prose is simplistic.

It seems as if the characters serve merely to explore Catholic Goa's history
and unique culture – a feat the author accomplishes very well, making the
country itself the real star of the action. Luckily, the book is well
researched, and Goa's history is sufficiently interesting, making The Sixth
Night a worthwhile read for history lovers and travel junkies.

For a look at "The Sixth Night" web-site visit
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
The descriptions of Goa's geographical beauty, pristine village life, and
fantastic food, food and more food, will make you want to visit. Luckily the
government of Goa's tourism site is really fantastic, and includes recipes for
all the food carefully described in "The Sixth Night".

RE: [Goanet]What type of IFFI Mr. Rane? - by Ethel da Costa

2005-07-21 Thread Nasci Caldeira

Hi all,

In addition to what Ethel has so eloquently said on this subject; here is my
two pennies worth.

Why should anyone, whatever their rank , be at the Film Festival functions,
for free? Every one, form the Governor down to the common man should pay for
their seat or standing room. Those in privy positions should pay higher than
others, according to their place in accomodation, and so on; This way all
expenses involved in the hosting of the IFFI will be recovered. The costs
should be such that the total sales proceeds and or donations in advance,
will tally with the total costs. Why Not??
No more free dinners/ hotel expenses for anyone, not even free transport.
Pay for everything! Even foreign reps, artists should pay; it's peanuts for
them; only thing is that they should be informed in advance and included in
their total costs of attending the IFFI.

More so, the Politicians and the Govt. Officers/ bureaucrats should not be
invited free! Local and or Indian and Foreign artists re the Film Industry
are the people of the day! and should be honoured as such, and should be the
only ones in prominence. This is not 'Hustings' for god's sake! Speeches and
or priveledges for the duration of the IFFI belong only to the Artists,
Actors, Directors Producers, Financiers etc. A system of user pays should
become the norm for anything and everything; that is the way to recover
costs. Why should the taxpayer alone, be liable for these expenses, which
benefit everyone in the long run. These are all rich and well paid people
who attend these functions; Make everyone pay; a proportion of the costs.
This idea of hosting politicians and others, and Govt ministers and
bureaucrats must cease at once, not only at the IFFI but for all ventures,
public occasions etc. Why Not?

Cheers,

So, will you let us know what you want to do with the 100 crores? Time to
practice what you preach, mate.

RE: [Goanet]Now solar-powered traffic lights to man Panjim roads

2005-07-21 Thread Nasci Caldeira

Hi Goadesc,

I commend the good job you guys are doing for Goa; and for development in
Goa. This news about 'solar powered traffic lights' in Goa is indeed a step
in the right direction.

However it should be known that 'solar powered traffic lights' are sought to
be installed, only to circumvent the frequent power failures in Goa, and the
consequences thereof. The cost of these is much higher than normal mains
powered 'Lights'. And the only long term saving made is by way of 'very long
life' of the LEDs installed/ used in these. (LEDs can be used on mains power
too!)

It should also be known that, these LEDs can be used with Light systems
powered by normal mains power! Further, I must add that the programming of
the control sequence, for various times of day/night as well as for various
days of the week, etc. i.e. the PLC system, (the 'Programmable Logic
Control') can be written and downloaded into the system Controller,
irrespective of how the system as a whole is powered! Mains or Solar power
in combination with batteries. Ask any Instrumentation and controls
Engineer/ Technician!!!

The total power required for each set of lights is not high, at all;
therefore why not install these traffic light systems with mains power and a
combination of batteries, which will enable power when mains power fails.
Thereby eliminating the high cost of solar powered systems. If we take into
account the 'maintenance efficiency' in Goa/India, then surely these 'solar
powered traffic lights' will soon become something like 'white elephants'??
My way will be cost effective and easy on maintenance.

Of course the first thing to do is to get 'uninterrupted power for all of
Goa' on the right parameters of power supply. This can be done by putting in
measures and cabling etc, (like I have outlined earlier), on a war footing;
works simultaneously undertaken throughtout Goa and completed within a set
time frame. It can be done! Why not??

Constant and continuos power supply will help Goa in every way! Whilst
spending scarce resources on dubious schemes , like solar powered Lights,
only to benefit some places if at all, is like accepting 'Defeat? Its like
saying Goa is unable to, not competent enough, to give its residents a
constant and correct supply of power, even after so many years.
Fixing of the power supply problem like that to say Bombay's standard; will,
in one stroke save PC's , fridges and fans etc. in Goa from destruction;
enable proper communications and enable residents to make full use of their
electric gadgets etc. You see! all round relief and progress. Electric power
supply is the corner stone of any modern society/ community! First things
first.

So please bring this to the notice of the Govt, and other authorities
involved. Lets take it from here. No more grandiose schemes, by which only
some 'contractors and suppliers cane make money.
This scheme is a total eye wash as seen from an engineering point of view!
It will be 66 lakhs of Rupees down the drain, to begin with. As it is the
Panjim drains are choked!

Cheers!

Solar-powered traffic lights to man Panjim roads soon !

"The proposal that was discussed at the State Road Safety Council
meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary in February, this year, has
been agreed in principle and would be implemented as soon as the
requisite funds of Rs 66 lakh are allocated. >

. A provision has been made so that should

the battery run out, the solar-powered traffic lights will switch to
street light mode and draw power from it," SP (Traffic) Deshpande

[Goanet]Why No Konkani

2005-07-21 Thread Ancy S. D'Souza Paladka
Why No Konkani

Rajesh Haldankar, Shiroda. It seems that the State Bank of India (SBI)
has forgotten to know that the official language of Goa is Konkani
although Marathi when used for official purposes does not harm the
Goans.

But what if Kannada is made as the language as can be seen at the SBI
ATM at Ponda where the option of languages given in this ATM machine
is English, Hindi and Kannada. This is a insult to the Goans as till
today we have been forced to learn Marathi as a third language and on
no cost we will think of learning Kannada if it is imposed by the
Government as it is seen that a lot number of migrants have made Goa
as their place of living. Since recently the advertisement of the
popular briefs Rupa Frontline is been given a new look by introducing
Sanjay Dutt in the advertisement wherein the word Frontline is written
in Kannada as can be seen in Goa, prior to this their was a tea called
Turya where its advertisement posters were pasted in Kannada with the
word Turya Chaha written in Kannada. It looks like the outsiders who
make these advertisements still do not know the official language of
Goa is Konkani and not Kannada.

Why No Konkani:
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 2005-07-21 11:44.
This is what happens when we let outsiders take our place. We Goans
are known for our welcoming nature not suspecting anyone to "step"
over us. It will not come as a suprise if the "SETTLED OUTSIDERS" of
Goa start demanding their rights to have KANNADA as the official
language for Goa just has been the case for MARATHI.
WAKE UP GOANS - SAVE GOA, SAVE KONKANI.
