[Goanet]Flourishing Flesh Trade: It all begins with a whisper
http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=news&Story_ID=081226 NT Staff Reporter Panaji Aug 11: The modus operandi adopted by sex workers is unique. A telephone call goes to a party, the moment it receives a positive reply, the second party is ready with the girl of his choice and the customer is informed about the fees. A driver of a cab or Maruti van drops the girl right in front of the customer within no time and that too at a destination where he desires. The third party is so prompt that it acts as per the command of the customer and is ever ready to serve him at their doorstep. This job is perfectly done by tourist taxiwallas who are rarely seen on the stands. They operate on contract basis and they know their job very well. The moment they find a tourist alighting from Mumbai, Kolhapur or Pune-bound buses at the Volvo bus stand, they approach them. The first sentence which they whisper in their ears is ?Sab, apko kahan jana hain. Sab, mai aapko saste mein le chalunga.? The moment a tourist shows interest in him, the driver achieves major milestone. And when a tourist asks the driver with a smile ?O kidhar milega??, the driver promptly replies, ?Sab samjho aap ka kaam hogaya, chalo gadi mein baitho.? Then the real conversation begins on the mobile. Mind you, some times, before the customer could reach the destination point, the girl of his choice is already there. Still, sometimes these drivers are instructed to keep a watch on the girls coming from Mumbai or any other destinations so that they reach in safe hands at any hour of the night. The girls do not come alone to Goa. They are always accompanied by somebody and they know who the boy is or who the girl is and the cab, provision for dinner or breakfast depending upon the time is made for them besides reserving a suit in a posh hotel, or simple lodge or a hired room in a rented house kept ready for them. Where these women of ill-repute can entertain their daily customers. These girls usually wear jean pants and tops as per the prevailing latest fashion. And if anyone of them is caught in the act, then they say that he is their boyfriend and vice-versa. Some poverty-stricken local girls are also involved in soliciting the tourists. They are just a phone call away. This is being done either by the well-managed receptionists or managers appointed to entertain such customers besides waiters and room boys. The interesting thing in this kind of flesh trade is that there are few hotels and some lodges which have become brothels. In these there are permanently stationed girls/women living as guests and doing nothing but acting at the command of the hoteliers and lodgewallas. Some girls come in groups everyday to the city from villages and pretend as if they are employed in some private firms or offices to their parents, families and friends but visit hotels, lodges and rented houses. -- Regards, Carlos

[Goanet]Goan Traditional Mandos/Dulpods (.. with double meanings?)
IV "Chandnem udhelam, cheddva tuge dhamp go zonelam (repeat)." When there is a moonlight outside, why one should close her windows? Here is why! Until the early 1970s, most parts of Goa lived in the dark without electricity. Whenever people wanted to visit their neighbors or go to a posro (shop) at night, they used natural torches made out of dried coconut leaves or carried a candle in a coconut shell. But, they did not need these things when the moon shone brightly in the sky. During moonlit nights, people traveled freely without worrying that they might stamp a snake and get bitten by it or dash another person coming from the opposite direction. In fact, people scheduled their visits to far away relatives during full moon time. The moonlit nights meant better opportunities for boyfriends to visit their girlfriends and for mischievous boys to make sudden entries into houses and attack girls yes, these things happened even in the past but not on a large scale; hence, the suggestion to Cicil in the Dulpod to close her windows in order to avoid untoward happenings. All of the Goan Mandos, Dekhnnis and Dulpodam are based on Goas history, and every word/line conveys a different meaning. Sir, The disquaitifation of mathany saldana is an outright abuse of the process, nonetheless, I remember mathany saldana's words on this very issue" I am not a weather cock " His disqualitifcation is proven fact that his disqualifiers too have accepted the fact that " he is nto a weather cock " which is proven by their act of disqualification, thus mathany's biggest qualificatin is that he is nt a weather cock, and it has been endorsed herein too. the people of goa, should realize and accept this fact, that here is their only one and only reliable candidate whom they can trust. [Goanet]EXPOSE OF MUMBAI AIRPORT (LESSONS FOR GOA)
Ever since the Mumbai deluge made headlines, there has been a steady flow of information about Mumbai airport which as it turns out was practically at the epicentre both in causal as well as effect terms. We all know about the flights which were delayed and cancelled on an unprecedented scale. Now we are hearing about the nearby Mithi river being the key reason for the flooding of not only the airport but of Mumbai itself! Three recent articles in TIMES OF INDIA provide glimpses into the situation. On Aug 8 there was "How the airport ate up the Mithi River" which is self explanatory. Basically it shows how "the river has been artificially diverted by the airport" over the decades. (Reportedly, the area was originally known as Salsette!) In "Where eagles dare" (Aug 11), a graphical picture is presented about the airport layout, especially focusing on the inadequacies of the seondary runway (14-32) which had to be employed as the main runway (9-27) was put out of action when its landing aids were washed out. Incidentally, the main runway is the same length as Dabolim (3.5 km or 11K feet). The secondary runway not only has two obstructions, (one at each end i.e the control tower itself! and a hill), but is shorter at 3km and of this only 2.2 km is useable, and it is subject to both crosswinds and tailwinds (while the main runway only has headwinds, the favourable kind). As a result "most pilots would not want to use [it] more than once in a lifetime"! Oh and btw, the runway has been made in patches (sort of like Panjim's 4-lane DB Marg!) and even take-offs can be bone-rattling experiences. The third article is "CM to set up two panels to probe Mithi disaster" (Aug 11). One of these is the Mithi Nadi Development Authority (MNDA) and the other is a Disaster Management Authority (DMA). MNDA has the task of identifying obstacles in the free flow of the Mithi River and removing any encroachments. No mention is made of the airport as a potential culprit! Watch this space. Let's hope Goa govt learns the right lessons from the experience with Mumbai airport's growth and evolution in planning for Mopa. Let's also hope it does not let AAI chicken out from Dabolim when Mopa is ready.
[Goanet]BEWARE OF GOG!
GOG is not a typo. It stands for Government of Goa! And we better watch out for what it's going to do to what's left of our huffing and puffing road transport system. Yesterday's (Aug 11) TIMES OF INDIA had two stories belly to belly. One was "Delhi goes KL way, opts for monorail". The other says "In Goa as well". Delhi is to build a 60 km system as feeders to the Metro. A 15 km stretch is to be taken up as a pilot project which would take 2-3 years. Note that Delhi would be trying frantically to spruce things up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It is common knowlege that though monorails have been around for 50 odd years, internationally they have mostly been used so far in a light duty way i.e. in amusement parks, connecting tourist destinations or for relatively short distances. Its big advantage is that it is supposed to be relatively cheap at Rs 35-40 crore per km. Now let's take a look at GOG's plan. It is to link the big urban points of Mapusa, Panjim and Margao, spanning a distance of about 40 km. The "tracks are expected to run along side the [highway]". The project is expected to be completed in 18 months. The cost can be put at around Rs1.4K crores. Now wait a minute. Will the construction of the untried and untested Indian monorail in Goa interfere with the operation of heavy traffic on the existing highway? The Delh monorail though it totals 60 km does not run this risk as it is intended as feeders. Each feeder is isolated from the other and from the main Metro rail line. Turnpike traffic in Goa is however likely to be in a real mess for the duration of the construction and, if there are the inevitable remedial jobs to be undertaken after a monsoon or two, for a long time thereafter. The state of DB Marg in Panjim may be a good forerunner of things to come. Only the scale will be different. Dont say you have not been warned! The HERALD (Aug 12) has a good editorial "Think Simple" questioning the wisdom of monorail in Goa.

[Goanet]Goan Traditional Mandos/Dulpods (.. with double meanings?)
Hello Jorge! Here is my version of the following from my personal experience: Undir martai re uddieo, Cicil tujeo dhamun dhor go mirieo. (Rats are jumping around, Cecilia catch tight your plaits.) In the olden days, when people chased rats in a house, if a door of a room was closed and they couldn't run away, they would climb up the chasers legs. Most women in those days wore a kapodd (cotton sari.) In order to wear a kapodd/sari, one has to first wear a dubji (undergarment/skirt) which is fastened to the waist with a lugttacho doro (cloth cord). The inner end of a kapodd/sari is tucked on to the dubji cord in the center and then its top edge is tucked all around the waist in one round. A pallu (top end of sari) is then formed and thrown on the shoulder. The balance middle length of kapodd/sari is gathered into a bunch of plaits and tucked at the dubji cord just below the navel the more the plaits, the better the appearance/show of a sari. If the bunch of plaits is pulled, the kapodd/sari falls loose. When women drove away rats from their paddy barns, the rats jumped around and sometimes climbed up women's legs. When this happened, they screamed, jumped and pulled their kapodd in order to get rid of the rat(s) from their bodies resulting in looseness and fall of (kapodd!) Even though women always wear a "dubji" under a "kapodd" it still mattered in those days if a "kapodd" came off! Hence, the suggestion to Cicil in the Dulpod to catch tight her plaits so that the kapodd/sari does not come off/fall down! Moi-mogan, Domnic Fernandes Anjuna/Dhahran, KSA Re: Goan Traditional Mandos/Dulpods ( .. with double meanings?) Thu Aug 11 00:42:13 2005 There are many variations to this "dulpod". Here is the version printed in Maestro Lourdino Barreto's "Goenchem Git": "Cecilia mhojem nanv / Cheddvam bhitor cheddum kurioso hanv. / Tum kurioso zaleari / Mogê (Mhoji?) matxi judi talhar kori. / Tugê (Tuji?) judi talhar korunk / Irmanv mhogê (mhoji?) bhurgi nhõi rê moti. / Sinalako ditam pero / Cecilia você quer ou não quero / Maka (Mhaka?) naka tujem pero /Dilear puro mogachem utoro. - "Kurioso", from the Portuguese "curioso" ("curiosa" in the feminine), though literally meaning "curious", in this context it should be taken as "most gifted" ("mais prendada" in Portuguese). "Judi" comes from the old Portuguese word "judia" which meant "coat" (does not have this meaning any longer; nowadays "judia" means a female jew, masculine being "judeu"). "Talhar" is also a Portuguese word meaning "To cut out". So «Mhoji (or "Mhaka") matxi judi talhar kori» is «Please cut out a coat for me». "Sinalak" = "As a token". "Você quer ou não quer" means "Do you want or don't you?" "Per" comes from the Portuguese "Pera" and, in Goa, means "guava". In the above Fr. Lourdino version there is no «sang maka kitem ditoloi feti». But, in this sentence, "feti", from the Portuguese "feitio", would, in this context, mean "labour charges", "payment" («Sang maka kitem ditoloi feti» = «Tell me what you will pay me»). The verses «Udir martai re uddieo, Cecil tujeo dhamun dhor go mirieo» and «Bailean chandnem udelam, Cecil tujim dham gho zonelam» also are not in Lourdino's book. I suppose "Udir" is actually "Undir". In this case, «Undir martai uddio, Cecil tujeo damun dhor go mirio» would mean «Rats are jumping, Cecilia keep tight your plaits» (probably "the plaits of your skirt"), and «Bhailean chandnem udelam, Cecil tujim dhamp go zonelam» would mean «The moon has risen outside, Cecilia close your windows». [Goanet]RE: Goa as IT Hub
Someone in Goa remarked that IT in Goa is MT! Substantially this could turn out to be correct considering the fact that the hundreds and hundreds of acres of land accquired by one of Goa' s numerous dispensations went unutilised, and now there is talk by some other responsible Govt functionaries about biotechnology! To be candid even D-Link which is the most tom-tommed Company by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and others like Nand Kamat, has recourse to "sweated" labour. It is this aspect of wages that needs to be highlighted whether it is IT, SEZ, Biotech, etc etc etc. What is the use of business which uses abysmally low wages as "competitive advantage". Ofcourse this does not imply that wages comparable to those paid in UK, USA must be paid in Goa. This would be an unfair thing, but it must be ensured that a "fair wage" is paid. It is suggested that wages in new-fangled business models must be atleast 30 percent above the currently prescribed "minimum wages" in Goa. This would result in an even playing field for both LABOUR and CAPITAL Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs
