o Great Goan cattle robbery: Cattle owners in Goa have claimed over
Rs 5.6 million as compenstation with 437 insured cattle reported
dead over two years. Bovines are often not purchased, but records
show it is owned by the dairy farmer. When bankers go for site
inspection, the farmer claims his bovine has gone for grazing and
cannot ascertain when it will return. Months later, the farmer
claims his bovine has died and the 'fixed' doctor does the rest.
  (Freddy Rebello, in Herald)

Four teenagers died on Saturday, two from Dehra Dun
died off Arossim beach, and another two off Palolem. The
latter two were from Ponda. (H)

o Marine life under threat in Goa: Goa's territorial waters are
showing signs of an increase in anoxia (oxygen depletion),
which can have an adverse effect on the state's marine life,
says research findings of the National Institute of Oceanography.(H)

o Ravi Naik's supporters had a luncheon meet, and even tried to
rope in education minister Luizinho Faleiro, to throw his
weight behind the oust-Rane campaign, initiated by the GPCC
  president (Naik). GT

In Honda village, Sattari, the home of a major bus
building factory, villagers demanded at a recent
gram sabha meeting that the number of migrants
working in the area be restricted. Those who have
lived here for more than 10 years may stay; even
many of them have married with the locals. However,
we are against any more of them coming here, we demand
that our own villagers be employed, panchayat
member Vishwajeet Rane said. Nearly 1000 Biharis,
mostly working in factories as labourers, have been
driven out of the village. Rane told GT that the
locals are agitated by the bias shown by managements
of factories to recruit Biharis. The migrants are
ready to work for less wages, even Rs 40 per day.
This has resulted in a large number of our local youth
being unemployed, he said. (Andrew Pereira in
  the Gomantak Times)

Assagao's new Saturday Nite Bazaar is coming up on
a bed of deceipt, writes GT/Weekender. The
Assagao panchayat, sections of the comunidade and the
local MLA have violated notifications and forest laws,
it writes. The principle is simple. The highest
bidder wins, comments GT-Weekender. It tracks the
robbery that no police station will ever report. (GT/W_)

o Film Awards: Dynesh Moghe's Kantteantlem Ful won the best film
award award for 2005 at the third Goa state film festival, and
also bagged either other film awards. Local film-makers wore
black badges, silenting observing a sit-in protest outside the
venue, condemning the state government for not releasing
financial aid for the production of Konkani films. (NT)
Film-makers meanwhile turned their ire against Director
of Information Menino Peres, for misutilisation of public
money in the recently-held film festival. (GT/W)

From The Hindu Business Line : As Kerala turns into an El Dorado for migrant
workers from other States - a deliciously ironic reversal of the traditional
outbound experience for aspiring young Keralite jobseekers - it becomes all
the more imperative to ensure the highest and most humane standards for
labour.

By K.G. Kumar

AMONG its developmental virtues, Kerala is renowned for the status it
accords to its workers, treating them in a manner that few other States do,
motivated in large part, no doubt, by its own history of working-class
struggles for a fair and decent livelihood. Thus the State Governments
official labour policy reiterates the concerns of this government for the
welfare and protection of labour. By seeking to empower them and improve
their quality of life, the policy goes on to add, Government is also
committed to providing labour market security, income security and decent
working conditions for the working population.

That, unfortunately, was not the experience of the migrant workers from
Bihar who were admitted to the General Hospital in the State's capital last
week, hungry to the point of starvation, and feverish with suspected malaria
and dengue. Two of the migrant workers - engaged in rebuilding the capital
city's roads, employed by an outside company - subsequently died.

Dear me!

The confusion on the voting statistics is worse than I anticipated. While
everyone is agreed that 317 villagers signed on the Attendence Register of
the Panchayat for the Gram Sabha, just look at the 'vital' statistics of the
polling [For ; against ; Total]
Sakal's GT ...170:144:345 [ 31 votes invalid ?]
Navhind Times...173:134:330 [23votes rejected]
Herald.. 340: - :340
Perhaps Mr.S.V.Naik, the Block Development Officer's representative who
oversaw the referendum will release the official statistics..not that
it really matters if the matter is resolved amicably by the village
Panchayat or goes into appeal to the BDO or Director of Panchayats or to the
Court. Two months of litigation and the site will be of no use to SNB this
year.

 Viva Goa.

So Lakshmi Narayan and Francisco D'souza, founders of software major
Cognizant, were declared the winners for the entrepreneur of the year award.
Mr Murthy summed up by saying to ET later, Cognizant is a $850m company, is
probably the fastest-growing company in the IT sector and has established a
tremendous brand equity in the United States and other developed markets. In
fact, on parameters like profitability, brand equity outside India, turnover,
number of jobs created and governance, Cognizant and its founders are clearly
the best of the lot.

View From The Outer Harbour

By: Thalmann Pradeep Pereira

DISTANT DRUMS

Today we present the 25th article of this column. Time indeed
flies. But it has been a voyage of self-discovery to scan the news, locate
events that have some relevance to the trend of the times, and then to try and
distil out an essence that can be presented to the reader.

Just as Birthdays only remind us that we are nearer to the
grave, Jubilees also have the same humbling effect. Nothing in this world is
eternal. Everything is subject to the Law of Change: things come into being,
things exist, and things perish. And yet, amidst this endless re-enactment of
the same cycle, we, as human beings, even while being subject to the same Law
of Change, strive for constant improvement and excellence. We may succeed or
we may fail. But just as in sports, it is not winning or losing that is
important. It is the participation that is important. So also, in the struggle
that is Life, it is the participation in the battle for Progress, which is all-
important. It is this participation that marks out one’s contribution to the
Human Enterprise. It is the record of this Collective Participation that
constitutes Human History.

It is with this perspective that on 7th November, we observe the
88th Anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1917. That Revolution took place
on 25th October, 1917, according to the Julian calendar that was then being
followed in Russia. Hence the Revolution is also called the October
Revolution. With the subsequent change-over to the Gregorian calendar, the
Anniversary came to be observed on 7th November.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 went down in history as the first
successful instance of the toiling masses taking their destiny into their own
hands and re-shaping it. The theory of Communism developed by the German duo
of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels was successfully applied to the Russian
ground-realities by Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin. The creation of the
Soviet Union as a powerful country was possible only because of the unmatched
heroism and untold sacrifices of ordinary men and women. The reasons for the
collapse of that experiment in 1991 are a matter for deep and studied thought.

But nevertheless, every subsequent social change after 1917 has
come to be measured against the exacting standards of change and progress set
by the Bolsheviks. Today, when we question the fruits of 15th August 1947 or
of 19th December 1961, we have those same exacting standards in the back of
our minds. Without for a moment belittling the toils and sacrifices of the
countless Indian and Goan Heroes and Heroines, whether young or old, of the
yester-years or of the present generation, in building up a modern India and
Goa, we require to be critical and self-critical in order to correctly imbibe
the Lessons of History, to find out where we were deficient. This weekly
column “View From The Outer Harbour” has this definite stated objective.

Collective Memory may be short. But Collective Public Experience
has a near-genetic quality to it, which Indian politicians can ignore only at
their own peril. Just about 18 months ago, the demagogues who sought to
hoodwink the masses with their “India Shining” campaign, were rudely awakened
to the bitter truth of the sorry plight of the masses. Many bye-elections and
State Assembly elections in the intermediate period till date have only
underscored that same powerful political message dropped into the ballot box
by the ordinary semi-literate Indian. The results of the just-concluded
Municipal Elections in Goa, also convey the same message that the people are
no longer willing to be taken for granted.

It however needs to be emphatically recorded that mere Dreams
and Visions cannot bring about Social Transformation. For that, there has to
be a concrete study of the concrete realities on the touch-stone of a
framework of change having some abiding relevance. The problem in Goa is that
our self-proclaimed “Men of the Masses” and their “Social Movements” lack that
much-needed characteristic of an over-arching Framework of Change. That is the
reason why they end up in a mould not much different from the run-of-the-mill
Congress or BJP leaders with their self-centred personality-based political
activities, in which the actual toiling

Assagao, a sleepy village between Mhapsa and Anjuna Beach, suddenly woke up
to the glare of the Papparazi, tourism throes and social upheaval...all for
the sake of a Saturday Night's dream! The Saturday Night Bazzar [SNB] has
become the buzz. Sweet dreams to some, a nightmare to others. There is a
constant shift between dreams and nightmares, too.

The Ingo's SNB was for long held in Arpora. I have been there quite a few
times and even interacted with its promoter, Ingo Grill. I was editing a
travel tabloid the whole of last tourist season. Depending on one's
perspective one can enjoy the SNB like a fable. A fable has a superficial,
simple story that one can enjoy even as a child and a deeper meaning that
only age and experience can help one to understand and appreciate. I have no
sermon to preach to the world.

The story so far:
1. Ingo successfully runs a SNB at Arpora for many years. Problems increase
with popularity. Traffic jams, increasing demands. Ingo's plan to start
Paintball in 2004 at Arpora stalled for various logistical reasons.
2. Freddy Fernandes applies to the Communidade of Assagao for permission ot
conduct SNB on 10,000 sq.m of Communidade land in survey No99 and 110 for 6
months for Rs.6.0 lakhs as rent. Land listed as private forest but hired
vide Communidade letter dated 19 June, 2005, subject to Freddy getting the
necessary permissions and complying with the rules. The communidade stands
to gain Rs.6.0 lakhs even if the land is not used for SNB. It is within the
agreement.
3.Application made to Panchayat of Assagao . Gram Sabha [ Village Council of
voters] held on 09 and 30 mOctober, 2005 end in stalemate. Fresh Gram Sabha
meeting on 06 November, 2005.
*When specifically questioned What is your stand on SNB as sarpanch? the
Sarpanch Mr. victor D'Souza replies, In my personal opinion, I would say NO
When similarly questioned, Panchayat member Thomas D'Souza says, I am
with the sarpanch in this opinion. I am also against the SNB in Assagao.
Thereafter the Sarpanch adds, However, as Sarpanch I am with the view of
the majority in the village. Panchayat Member Mr.Jalinder Gaokar is more
forthright, I am in favour of the SNB as it will provide employment to the
local youth and tourist taxi owners.
* Villager and former Deputy Director of Accounts [Fazenda], Rodney D'Souza
said that the Village Panchayat was responsible for the division amongst the
people of Assagao. It should resolve the issue as needed.
*Another villager, Eknath, questioned why there was an issue of foreigners
now and not when houses in Assagao were being rented or even sold to
foreigners in the past.
*Ex-Panchayat member [and husband of the current Panchayat member],Pradip
Naik asked the people to provide jobs for the local youth as an alternative
to SNB.

The meeting was ably conducted by the Sarpanch in a dignified manner with
proper decorum. One may accuse him of being manipulative but must grant it
that it was conducted with decorum.

Some of the persons who spearheaded the opposition were conspicuous by their
silence, though present in the Gram Sabha.Others heckled the speakers, often
needlessly.

For some unknown reason , some of the leaders wanted the villagers to
boycott the ballot after the Sarpanch agreed to voting by secret ballot
instead of show of hands. The electoral roll was the reference for
eligibility of a voter in this village referundum. Prominent among the
persons who gave the boycott call was, quite surprisingly, Adv.Shanti
Fonseca. She is both, a child and women's rights activist in her own right ,
and the wife of AITUC leader Christopher Fonseca, residing in Assagao. Those
who listened to her and others who left the venue without casting their vote
will rue their decision. The day was carried by the supporters of SNB 173
votes to 132 votes with 20 votes declared invalid among the 325 votes cast.

The representative of the Block Development Officer-Bardez was present but
kept a low profile. However, there will be some explaining to do as to how
325 votes were cast when there were less persons present for the Gram
Sabha...and some of them had walked away without casting their votes. There
seems to be some inflow of persons for the voting AFTER the register was
signed and the discussions were ended. The statistics, however, need to be
verified. I could be wrong. Something could be terribly wrong. It needs a
good look again. In fact, the whole issue needs to be looked at with a cool

One of these was Msgr. Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado,
the pioneer lexicographer of Konkani. Among his
 publications we find two dictionaries,
 Konkani-Portuguese (1893) and Portuguese-Konkani

Re: “UDAY BHEMBRE's ROAD MAP TO HELL” by Godfrey Gonsalves

  Part IV
A friend has pointed to a couple of typing errors in
Part I of this chain. The corrected statements are:
(1) The books in Roman script were used by the
missionaries upto 1684 (rpt. 1684 NOT 1984) when
Konkani was banned even from being spoken. (2) It is
also relevant to point out here that no native Goan
anywhere ever published any Konkani literary work in
the Roman script before 1890 (rpt. 1890 NOT 1990).
The errors and consequent trouble to goanet readers
are deeply regretted.
Now, let us move on to Godfrey’s Road Map to Hell.
4. Godfrey makes the following statements: (a) way
back in 1981 when he was almost a non entity in Goa’s
political and social circles, he (Bhembre) put his
signature and unanimously at that, to a document
that destroyed the future of Konkani in Roman
script.
 (b) but cleverly leaving out a vital document
relating to a major decision on 21.11.1981 taken by
him and others where the concept of Konkani only in
Devanagari script was given the stamp of recognition
by the highest linguistic and literary body the
National Academy of Letters viz the Sahitya Akademi
New Delhi.
(c) therefore a decision to recognize Konkani only
in Devanagari script could not have been taken by Mr
Uday Laximikant Bhembre and the others without the
mandate of the people or the adoption of such a
resolution by the Cabinet.
(d) Mr Bhembre needs to be put to strict proof as
to who authorized him to decide for the Konkani
speaking people of Goa for that matter of other
regions as well.

The writer displays not only crass ignorance but
also a lack of minimal common sense. How does ONE
INDIVIDUAL put his signature to a document
UNANIMOUSLY? A decision is called UNANIMOUS only when
everyone from among those authorized to take it, and
physically present, votes for it. Even if merely one
out of one hundred opposes it, that resolution is NOT
said to be passed UNANIMOUSLY. Similarly, when ALL
the members of the Advisory Board signed the
recommendation to adopt Devanagari as the recognized
script for Konkani and NONE OF THEM RECOMMENDED
OTHERWISE, it became a unanimous recommendation. Each
member signed it in his individual capacity, according
to his own considered opinion, and cannot be said to
be responsible for the signature of others. So, how
can you question Bhembre about the action of the other
nine? Obviously, the other nine, INDIVIDUALLY, were
of the same opinion. The question that weighed on the
minds of each of them at that point in time was what
course would be the best for the development of the
language; for that exactly was their main
responsibility and concern. Moreover, they must have
taken into consideration the UNANIMOUS resolutions
which had been passed in this regard at ALL the
previous sessions of the All India Konkani Conference
(Parishad) which had been held in the various regions
where Konkani is spoken i.e. Goa, Maharashtra,
Karnataka and Kerala.
The signatories to that document were members of
the Advisory Board which had been appointed after
following the due procedures laid down for this
purpose. These procedures were not exclusively for
Konkani; they are uniformly applied to each and every
one of the languages recognized by the Sahitya
Akademi. These members did not appoint themselves.
Nor did they proffer their opinion suo motu. They
gave their opinion only after the question was
referred to them. And the Sahitya Akademi referred
the matter to the Advisory Board because that is its
normal procedure. It was left to the Sahitya Akademi
to ignore the recommendation of the Board if it
thought that the same was faulty, defective or
unwarranted. The members do not require any separate
authorization; the fact that they have been appointed
members is authorization enough.
The names of the members of that Advisory Board
have been given by Fr. Pratap Naik in another message
to goanet. A perusal of that list shows that it
contains members from all the regions where Konkani is
spoken; it also has writers in each of the four major
scripts in which Konkani is written. Therefore, one
cannot say that it was constituted solely of members
from one particular region or of writers in one
particular script alone. There were also Catholic
priests on that Board; they were probably influenced,
in addition, by

ITEM #1:

From: Sebastian Borges [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3 Nov 2005

Perhaps my knowledge of the English language is quite poor. How does
anyone overshadow a work to the archives? Can we not expect some common
sense and seriousness from a “journalist”? Or does it mean that anything
is fine for an “activist”?

Msgr. Sebastiao Rodolfo Dalgado was born in 1855 i.e. in the nineteenth
century. Therefore, how could this stalwart have produced any works in the
16th century?

ITEM # 2:

From: Sebastian Borges [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3 Nov 2005

The books in Roman script were used by the missionaries upto 1984 when
Konkani was banned even from being spoken

Dear all,

At TGF we have not offered an opinion yet on Pratap Naik's Konkani and
What Goans can do for it. We have just posted it verbatim left it at that
We hope to do that later this weekend. Please remember to check TGF at
http://www.colaco.net in about 72 hours.

I will give you a gist of what our personal belief on this present Konkani
confusao. The VESTED interests are out with their knives. As usual, Goans
will get jipped in the midst of this totally useless harshness being
displayed in the public arena.

More later

For now, I wish to express my surprise at ITEM # 2, especially having taken
into account the very strongly worded and semi-bilious sentiment expressed
in Item #1.

I do confirm that (Marathi being my first language), My English is not up to
scratch. I also know that my typing skills are what they are, I do make
several TYPOS.

But Sebastian Borges appears to be a very exact person. No wonder he
has taken Godfrey Gonsalves to task for his obvious error.

I however have a serious disagreement with what the apparently very exact
Sebastian Borges has written (see Item #3 of Nov 3) and not yet
corrected (Nov 5).

I invite Sebastian Borges to refer me to ANY source which will confirm that
Konkani was banned even from being spoken in 1984.

I know I spoke it in 1984, I know I spoke it in 1967 in Goa. Jack de
Sequeira spoke it in 1967, so did Ananta Narcinva Naik, Yeshwant Sitaram
Desai, Dayanand Bandodkar, Jagdish Rao, Alfredo de Tavares and even Dr. Kui.

So I wonder where SM Borges gets that info (? typo) from

yours very sincerely

the very inexact

jc

PS: Having said that, I believe that Kokni as presently being marketed by
the Kokni Mogis/Fogis is a horrible sounding nasal Khitchdi of the
delightful language Marathi.

If we meet Please do not destry my love for Marathi by speaking to me
in that Horrible Concoction you guys call Konkani. English will be fine,
Thank You.

Friends,

Help us fight this amanedment. Please read it carefully and let us have your
comments and suggestions for help.

Heta

Friends,

The material below is a comparison of the TCP Act and the effect of the 2005
ordinance on the Act. The comparison is the work of several persons under the
banner of the Goa Environment Federation.

This list cannot accept attachments (tabulated into a Word file it becomes
less unwieldy to read - if you like I can email it to you separately so let me
know) so I have organised the material like this:

the original material comes first, followed by the changes brought about by
the 2005 ordinance. Finally, there is an explanation of the power of a state
governor to promulgate ordinances and in what circumstances.

This is a longish post as it includes the complete comparison assembled by the
GEF.

It has direct and serious implications for the work of the group and all those
concerned and involved in any way with heritage conservation.

The sad condition of Goan roads. There are many roads which need a lot of
improvement but I could only mention two. The condition of the road from Honda
to Khandepar is really not worth mentioning in most places you cannot move
more than 2 kms per hour that too with a lot of bouncing up and down. It is
very dangerous specially for three wheelers I saw one such three wheeler
almost overturning. I don’t know why the government cannot function to get
these roads repaired. I think a lot of mining vehicles are using these roads
which need to be of concrete. I think the truck owners , mine owners could
get together and pool in some money and save on the heavy expenses for repair
of vehicles time and inconvenience to all vehicles. There are lot of empty
promises of those in power but the day never dawns. When will we goans take
the initiative to do some constructive work?

The second road that has recently been widened is the road from Calangute to
Baga. I don’t know how or who has done it but it is horribly done up. There is
congestion and no traffic sense anybody drives overtakes any side and no
traffic cop in sight. This being a very busy and important road needs great
attention. It takes an hour or so to pass from calangute to baga . I really
wonder what will happen if there is an emergency. I think we could go in for a
helicopter service provided by the panchayat from the funds they are getting

SOME PRINCIPLES I USED FOR IMPROVING MEMORY- Jeffrey D`Souza

I decided to write on this topic not because I have a very good memory but
because I had a lot of difficulty remembering things myself when young. I
wish to share some of the secrets my teachers had given me and certain things
that I still remember without revising because it has become a part of my
permanent memory. I remember being often rebuked for forgetting things by my
teacher and elders which made me feel very bad until one day I read the
following
If you think you are beaten you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you `d like to win, but think you cant,
Its almost certain you wont.
I can, I will, repeated a number of times helps a lot to improve confidence.
It is very important to:
FEEL CONFIDENT THAT YOU REMEMBER AND YOU WILL DEFINITELY REMEMBER
BECOME GENUINELY INTERESTED IN WHAT YOU WANT TO REMEMBER (you never forget
your best friends name)
RESOLVE STRONGLY TO REMEMBER (there should be a strong reason to remember)
USE AS MANY SENSES (touch, sound, smell, taste wherever possible)
ASSOCIATE OR LINK LOGICALLY
There are also some important things that we should do on our part so that we
do not forget they are:
ERASE :we have to clear our minds of all distractions or forgive all wrong
doings by others that is be at peace with yourself
Listen carefully you can make short notings of important points. You can
request the speaker/teacher to adjust the speed/sound level if he/she is going
too fast/soft.
After the lesson try to get answers to some things you have not properly
understood.
Re-read the matter try to make sketches drawings find pictures try to use a
record player and record with your own voice the matter and play it just
before you go to sleep. This was very enjoyable when I did it myself. You
learn to speak and enjoy this activity. I also wrote small articles and sent
them to the All India Radio Yuva vani Programme which were accepted and this
improved my self confidence.
Repetition after a week and then a month and after 6 months can get the matter
in your permanent memory.
The other way of learning and remembering with a few examples are as follows:-
The seven colours Violet Indigo Blue Green Yellow Orange Red can be got from
the word VIBGYOR
The Notes in music in the spaces in C-scale are FACE respectively and on the
lines are Eat Good Bread Dear Father EGBDF
The nine planets in order can be remembered from the sentence My Very Educated
Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets
Bad words are considered bad by many but I put some of the Bad Words to good
use by using them to learn colour codes of Resistors and they are not easily
forgotten and nobody takes pains to teach /learn them. It only takes time and
effort to frame sentences/ arrange points.
I think I have to leave this article incomplete for lack of space. Kindly
complete it for me by experimenting and please let me know the results. Thanks
for reading..Jeffrey

Hosts AVC-Kuwait won the 2nd Edition of AVC's 7 a-side Football tournament
held under the auspices of KIFF on 4th November 2005 on the famous Soor
grounds in Kuwait City. In the finals AVC- Kuwait swamped United Friends (B)
4-0. In the run up to the finals AVC defeated United Friends (A), Kerala
Challengers and Navelim Youth Centre whereas United Friends (B) got the
better of Don Bosco, Curtacares and Kuwait Goan Association. Playing sublime
soccer and continuing their impressive form, AVC steamrolled UFC and were
3-0 up before the breather. Jimmy, Braulio and Edward were outstanding in
midfield, young Steven showed immense talent as striker with Captain Vincy,
Liston and Alex marshalling the defense. New find Jose was excellent under
the bar and as always the star veteran Francis Fernandes controlled the
whole team to perfection. For UFC stalwart Sarto Baptista controlled the
entire defense and midfield but the young brigade of AVC were simply
unstoppable. The presentation ceremony was led by Mr. V.K. Vohra (Ex-KIFF
President), Guest of Honor Mr. Manuel D'Costa (KIFF President) and Mr.
Marcus Pacheco (famed Goan coach) and Mr. John Furtado (AVC - Kuwait
President) Mr. B.M. Viegas (KIFF) and Mr. Braz of AVC. Special memento was
presented to Mr. Cipriano for being the oldest player still active on Soor
grounds presently donning colors for Veterans United. Man of the tournament
judged by the panel of guests was Mr. Jimmy of AVC whereas Fair Play trophy
went to UG Strikers. Mr. Remy Fernandes of AVC compeered the entire
proceedings. IFRA's referees supervised the proceedings.

Letter to Prime Minister on Sh. K. Natwar Singh, External Affairs Minister
charged for corruption in Saddam Hussain regime

Dear Prime Minister,

Ever since the UN-sponsored independent committee headed by Shri Paul Volcker
named External Affairs Minister Shri K. Natwar Singh as a non-contractual
beneficiary of payoffs by the erstwhile Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq, the
credibility of India in the international community has taken a nosedive.

It is bad enough that the Minister who represents India in world affairs is
implicated in a murky international scandal. What compounds the offence is
that he continues to remain External Affairs Minister, with your full backing.
Your comment that the UN-sponsored report contains insufficient evidence to
warrant any adverse conclusion constitutes a total disregard of available
facts. By rubbishing the report to score a narrow political point, you are
mocking an important initiative to make the United Nations more accountable.
Your defence of an errant colleague has tarnished the quality of our democracy.

As a regular reader of Goanet I am more than somewhat concerned that the
comments posted tend to miss the core issues that should be of interest to
Goans. One of these is the occasional absence of publicity for possible role
models to Goan youth.

In this connection I think it is appalling that your service has totally
ignored the fact that a Goan, Francisco D'Souza, was recently
named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Economic Times in its annual awards
survey undertaken by leaders such as Narayana Murthy, Ratan Tata etc.

This is, by any standard, a prestigious recognition of Goan talent and
achievement, which merits wider notice among the Goan fraternity. We have few
Goans in high positions in business, and to have achieved eminence in this
area at the young age of 35 calls for celebration and emulation.

I believe the actual awards ceremony is to take place one of these days and I
hope that Goanet will not miss it this time.

Archbishop's greetings on Eid-Ul-Fitr.

The Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao and the whole Catholic community of Goa and
Daman, conveys his heartiest greetings to the Muslim community on the festive
occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr.

Eid-Ul-Fitr, a family feast of every Muslim household which follows the month
of Ramadan-a school of Iman (faith) and a 'stop to recharge one's spiritual
batteries' to acquire one's provision for the rest of the year..., The noble
month is a true school of transformation in which we change our actions,
habits and manners that are in variance with the Law of Allah, so by spending
time in prayer, we may become acceptable before him and improve our obedience
towards him. Also the `Eid is a chance to multiply good deeds by bringing
happiness and pleasure to the hearts of others, Muslims as well as all others,
especially helping and supporting the poor and needy.

We pray that all the acts of fasting, prayers and other righteous actions, be
a God-sent opportunity for the Muslim community in particular and for all of
us, to improve our quality of life, to leave all worldly pursuits, to shun all
evil deeds and become more humane promoting peace and harmony all around and
in this way we may come closer to God. Wish you a Happy Eid- Mubarak.

saying there was a power outage or comp failure etc and ppl should re-send.
Such is life on goanet! Cheers!

Thank you Cypriano.

I guess yours was the only correct answers.

And I always thought it was 'Tony Call' that's what i heard on Akashvanni
Ponnje as a
child.

I think the same singer sang the song 'Tunch zai maka naka Rita' or 'Kalliz hem
boong
beng beng bung beng zata'

btw, who is this Tony Car or how he got his name as 'car' ? any idea ?

Thanks once again

This is from Mumbai's DNA newspaper, Sunday, Nov 6.

Doing the done thing

The holiday does not seem to matter anymore; the
destination is all that counts

Ninad D Sheth

My last visit to Goa was at the turn of the
millennium, right after my wedding. The honeymoon — as
my wife reminds me on the odd occasion — is long over.
So I was keen to know if the same will hold true for
my attachment with this exquisite sea-facing
dreamland.
Since I was paying my way — and, alas, not on a junket
— I chose a no-frills airline called Spice Jet. It is
frighteningly no-frills! They do not even have life
jackets; in case of trouble over the sea you pull the
seat from your bottom, hug it close and pray hard.
Destination Goa attracts blondes of all manners. Just
before takeoff, a pretty young French backpacker
parked herself next to me. Now my French isn’t much
but conversations tend to start on short hauls. The
blonde asked me if I had “done” Goa before.
Unlike backpackers out to ‘do’ India with a vengeance,
I do not ‘do’ a place. It is much better to discover
the place by walking around, meeting the local
historian, dropping by an off-the-map eatery, and
generally taking time to soak it in.
With the death of distance these days no one wants a
relaxed look. Travel is bereft of either exotica or
adventure. The destination has taken over; the journey
does not really matter. There is a frenzied need
amongst the middle class to ‘do’ a destination, if
possible within the dreaded two-nights-three-days
straightjacket.
In the 1990s, Boeing proudly announced in its ad line
— tomorrow you can be anywhere, thus, by definition,
ruling out that adrenalin flow which comes from going
down the road less taken as in the olden days of
travel.
The charm and romance of travellers like Francis
Younghusband or Richard Halliburton has long gone. By
contrast, the air-conditioned traveller of today is
the new consumer of global haunts, the outsider
breezing past without bothering to look in. The
digital culture has shrunk distance unbelievably.
Microsoft’s tag line asks you where you want to go
today. Between Boeing and Microsoft, the world has
become a TV screen and the magic-carpet traveller has
been reduced to a couch potato.
Entire communities, most notably the Gujaratis and the
Bengalis, have a fixed idea of visiting spaces through
the vulgar mass tour groups with special diets thrown
in. The Gee Wiz American is the crassest incarnate of
the modern tourist. The Japanese, taking digital
pictures of everything that moves come a close second.

Modern travel is entirely soulless. There no
excitement of arrival and none of the abiding pleasure
of finding. All that matters is a picture with a grin
in front of the Parthenon. Inevitably, the
merry-go-round ends with a dinner at the local
McDonalds.
As I drank yet another feni on a moonlit Palolim
beach, I had uneasy thoughts that another crass
American Denis Tito had already “done” space as a
tourist. The final frontier has been crossed.
At the Goa airport on my way back, I bought a lottery
ticket promising riches (actually, a crore). I said to
myself, what good is it even if I win? In Goa you
realise that the best things in life cost little. A
feni, reading a book by the beach, or chatting up the
blondes. For the one out to seek Goa and not ‘do’ her,
she saves her charms, like true love. Goa remains a
one-night stand that lasts a lifetime.

Dears,

Nice to know that **UB ** does not necessarily refer to the Company of the
King of Good Times...it is also the abbreviation used by Prof.S.M. Borges
for Adv. Uday Bhembre, who reads 'good times' for Konkani only in Devanagri
though he is a prolific writer of English in the Roman Script ;-))
Incidentally, in his native Kanara [Canarese?] district Vijay [and even
Parajay] Mallyas clan is known as Konknni [ as against Tulu speaking
Kannads.]

Two lies do not make one truth. said Mahatma Gandhi. The local script
for Konkani was Goykannadi not 'Devanagri' as Prof. S.M.Borges would seem
to imply. I have checked this out with a historian. If Prof. S.M.Borges has
evidence to the contrary, let him adduce it.

It is news to me that the year 1922 is/was in the SEVENTEENTH CENTURY .
Is Prof. S.M. Borges using Anno Domini or is that a Jesuit Goebellism
also? Even in the Saka calendar, 1922 is not in the 17th century!! Is it in
the Devanagri Konkani calendar??

Speaking of the Jesuit instigated Romi Konkani publications, Prof. S.M.
borges writes, the last one having come out the press in 1660. [A.D.,I
hope ]. He also writes, THE FIRST PRINTED KONKANI TEXT IN DEVANAGARI,
written by natives, DATES TO 1678. It is a testimonial attached to
Henrich van Rheede's monumental work Hortus Indicus Malabaricus and
written by three Konkani vaidyas. [ 'Vaidyas' apparently refers to 'Hindu
Brahmin medicinal therapists', unless I am sadly mistaken.] Hortus Indicus
Malabaricus obviously refers to the Trees/Plants of Malabar region
[Kerala] of India unless my horticultural studies did not teach me enough.
In any case, the Romi lipi books PRE-DATED the Devanagri books in Konkani.
that is reason enough for Godfrey Gonsalves to celebrate!

Why does Prof. S.M.Borges nitpick about History, that essentially deals with
the 'Past', while UB's roadmap is for the 'Future'. Alvin Toffler's book
Back to the Future seems to have been misread for turning one's back on
the Future. Thus, the PAST is all they see! That's where the prime of UB,
Prof.S.M.Borges and my dear friend, Fernando do Rego's life actually is.

In Romi Lipi Konknni, we are looking at the FUTURE. It is the language that
our children will use to communicate the stirrings of their heart across the
globe through the internet. Let the Devanagri votaries have their swan song
in the sun...with the financial assistance of the Goa Government to publish
their literary works FOR THE ARCHIVES OF THE FUTURE. We GRUDGE IT NOT . They
are our brethren, though they seem to know it not. O Deva , Deva! Tenchi
'nagri' khuim asa? [ Oh my Lord, where is their land? ]
...
From: Sebastian Borges [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: UDAY BHEMBRE's ROAD MAP TO HELL by Godfrey
 Gonsalves
Therefore, let us consider the points raised by Godfrey on their merits.
 1. Konkani in Roman script has a history since the
16th century. This is a BASELESS LIE which is being
propagated by vested interests who subscribe to the
Goebelsian principle that a lie, when repeated a
 hundred times, becomes truth.
They wrote religious books in Konkani in the local script but
could not get them printed because, in spite of their
best efforts, they could not obtain fonts in the local
 script.

Fr. Thomas Stephens, the British Jesuit was
one of those who tried their utmost to procure these
fonts; their letters are a testimony to this. It was
only when the Portuguese Government banned the use of
the local script for official documents that Fr.
Stephens transliterated his books into Roman script
and got them ready for printing. His Doutrina
Christam was printed posthumously in 1922; This
SEVENTEENTH CENTURY work is the earliest Konkani book
printed in the Roman script. Later, many more books
are reported to have been printed, the last one having
come out the press in 1660.

  NO KONKANI LITERARY
WORK IN ROMAN SCRIPT WAS PUBLISHED BETWEEN 1660 AND
1890 (that is, for over two centuries!). LET GODFREY
CITE SUCH WORKS, IF ANY, BEFORE REPEATING THE LIE
that, in Konkani, Roman script has a history since the
 sixteenth century!

THE FIRST PRINTED KONKANI TEXT IN DEVANAGARI,
written by natives, DATES TO 1678. It is a
testimonial attached to Henrich van Rheede's
monumental work Hortus Indicus Malabaricus and
written by three Konkani vaidyas. At least one of
these vaidyas, who provided the Portuguese translation
 thereof,

For Mario to refer to socialist meccas in Europe indicates that he hasn't
got a clue how capitalist are the countries he refers to.

In the meantime, I wish Victor or some other
knee-jerk critic of the US would spare a few
minutes considering what is currently going on with
minorities in the socialist meccas of Holland and

Why is Islam being denigrated here with this
derogatory association of Mecca with socialism and
the ghettos?

Mario replies:

It looks like Santosh is trying to obfuscate the point
I was making by a misleading and over-sensitive
interpretation of an English figure of speech I
used, leading to a false allegation that I was
denigrating Islam.

Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of colloquial
English would know that there was no reference to
religion or to Mecca, the center of the Islamic
religion, in my post under reference. I did not use
the word Mecca - with a capital M. Thus Mecca was
not being denigrated as Santosh has falsely claimed.

I was referring to socialist meccas, which, in
English would mean major centers of socialism.

In the meantime, Santosh apparently has nothing to say
about the plight of minorities in the socialist meccas
of Holland and France, which was what I had referred
to in my post.

o Great Goan cattle robbery: Cattle owners in Goa have claimed over
Rs 5.6 million as compenstation with 437 insured cattle reported
dead over two years. Bovines are often not purchased, but records
show it is owned by the dairy farmer. When bankers go for site
inspection, the farmer claims his bovine has gone for grazing and
cannot ascertain when it will return. Months later, the farmer
claims his bovine has died and the 'fixed' doctor does the rest.

In Honda village, Sattari, the home of a major bus
building factory, villagers demanded at a recent

many of them have married with the locals. However,
we are against any more of them coming here, we demand
that our own villagers be employed, panchayat
member Vishwajeet Rane said.
