Mario clarifies this canard:

As one who uses the term Islamo-fascist whenever it
applies, it is necessary to confront this hideous and
deliberate calumny and distortion of the truth by
Santosh.

The term Islamo-fascist does not apply to Muslims in
general. It applies to a small number of Muslims who
are targeting and killing mostly innocent Muslims
currently in Afghanistan and Iraq. The reason they
are targeting and killing innocent Muslims is to
achieve a political goal through fascist means. In
addition, these particular fascists are killing
innocent Muslims in the name of Islam. Thus the term
Islamo-fascists.

During the Christian Crusades and the Inquisition, the
small number of fanatical Christians who were
terrorizing Christians and others in the name of
Christ would be accurately described as
Christian-fascists. This does not apply to all
Christians and neither does calling the radical
Muslims Islamo-fascists apply to all Muslims as
Santosh falsely claims in a deliberate attempt to
misrepresent the term.

The proof that he is doing so deliberately is because
this term has been clarified over and over again, on
Goanet and other forums that Santosh subscribes to, so
he knows it does not apply to Muslims in general.

Saleli women end hunger strike on Jamir's assurance

NT Staff Reporter

Panaji Jan 8: The Governor, Mr S C Jamir today visited Saleli, met the
villagers who were on hunger strike and urged them to resume normal
life with the assurance that he would take up their matter with the
state government and ensure that the normalcy is restored.

Following the intervention of the Governor, the women of the village
who were on hunger strike for five days called off their agitation.
The local leader of Shetkari Kamgar Sanghathana, Mr Putu Gaonkar
offered a glass of lemon juice to an elderly lady, announcing the end
of the hunger strike.

Though the hunger strike has been withdrawn, the villagers resolved to
continue their 'sit-in' protests till the arrested villagers are
released. The police have arrested 104 villagers in connection with
the rioting case on December 28, while six others have been arrested
in connection with the killing of Prithviraj Rane.

Earlier in the day, Mr Jamir interacted with the agitating villagers,
who were on a hunger strike demanding immediate release of their men
folk, who are presently in police custody. The villagers were
agitating over the land ownership rights and demanding closure of the
crushers.

Let this case of rioting be the first and last in Goa, Mr Jamir
appealed to the villagers. Let no one take law and order into their
own hands. The law will take its own course, and in the meantime,
please go back to your homes since you are risking your health by
fasting and placing yourselves at the mercy of the elements of nature
by sleeping here in the open grounds, Mr Jamir urged the striking
villagers.

Mr Jamir also appealed to the people not to allow any elements to take
advantage of their problems to further their petty vested interests.

The villagers earlier submitted a memorandum to the Governor,
demanding immediate release of the 'innocent' villagers whom they say
are being falsely implicated, closure of all illegal stone crushers
and granite mining in reserved forest area; grant cultivated land to
the farmers; and abolition of proprietorship of village.

Asked by mediapersons if he has been directed by the Centre to visit
the village this morning, Mr Jamir rubbished it saying that he had
come to the village on his own volition as a concerned Governor of the
people who feels for the people.

Law and order is a state subject, Mr Jamir pointed out to the
journalists and added Why should the Centre involve itself in a state
matter?

Mr Jamir later called on the bereaved family and expressed his
condolences to the family members. He urged the family to let bygones
be bygones and to let normalcy be restored without any delay.

A government release said that later in the day, the Governor
discussed the issue with senior ministers including, the Education
Minister, Mr Luizinho Faleiro.

The Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane also called on the Governor
later in the evening. The Governor asked the Chief Minister to
consider the problem as a human problem and to treat the case
compassionately.

Mr Jamir also pointed out that various law and order problems such as
Naxalism are caused by unfair land holdings and suggested that to
ensure a future free from such turmoil the Goa legislative assembly
deliberate on the issue of land ownership.

The Governor also echoed the concerns of the villagers regarding
pollution and asked the government to properly ensure pollution
control measures so that the populace is not deprived of a clean and
healthy environment.

Meanwhile, the villagers have convened a meet on Monday to chalk out
the future strategy.

Courts have no jurisdiction in expulsion of MPs: Somnath

PTI New Delhi Jan 8: The Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr Somnath Chatterjee is
clear that the courts have no jurisdiction on expulsion of MPs from
Parliament and will not respond to any judicial notices in the matter.

Talking tough that he would not allow any quarter to corruption, he is
keen that government come forward with a legislation to set up a
high-level commission to determine the salaries and allowances of MPs.

The 76-year-old eminent lawyer rejects all criticism that the
punishment of expulsion given to MPs in the 'cash for query' scam was
hasty and that the issue should have been referred to the privileges
committee or the ethics committee.

I cannot stop anyone from going to court. But according to me, the
courts have no jurisdiction at all in the matter. Any order is not not
binding. I am not surrendering or submitting to the jurisdiction of
the courts at this issue at all, he said during an interview with
PTI.

Mr Chatterjee has held consultations with eminent lawyers who are
fully backed his stance that the Parliament was fully competent to
take action against its members and that court had no jurisdiction
over it.

Maintaining that he had the highest respect for the judiciary, he said
it was a question of discipline and Parliament had the authority under
the Constitution to decide how to discipline its errant MPs. In this
matter, under the Constitution, Parliament is the supreme authority.

Citing the recent remarks of Chief Justice of India that question of
judges misconduct should be tackled within, the Speaker said: In a
sense, it amounts to saying it will be decided by their peers.
Likewise, we (Parliament) should be allowed this right. There should
be no question.

Acknowledging that notices have been received from lawyers
representing the expelled MPs, Mr Chatterjee said that he would not
send Lok Sabha officials to courts if they chose to send similar
notices.

Mr Chatterjee said he felt sad that such extreme action had to be
taken which was not a pleasure for him or for Parliament, but there
has been an overwhelming support from people across the country and
Indians abroad.

He has been getting hundreds of letters and e-mails hailing the action
taken by the Parliament against its own members in the wake of the
scam.

I am very, very clear. There can be no quarter for corruption and
action will follow, howsoever, high one may be, he said.

Rejecting criticism against the quick disposal of the case by the
inquiry committee headed by Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, the Speaker said it
was constituted after consultations with leaders of all political
parties and at that time nobody had raised any objection.

The committee decided its own procedures and the accused MPs had also
not sought the services of lawyers nor did they even want to see the
video-tapes of the sting operation in which they were caught taking
money.

The main question, he said, was whether due principles of natural
justice were observed to allow the MPs to controvert evidence against
them and it was followed. Even in the case of a privilege committee
hearing, there was no guarantee that lawyers will be allowed because
it would be for the committee to finalise its procedures.

Asked whether low salaries and allowances could be a reason for MPs to
indulge in bribery, the Speaker disagreed with the suggestion and said
when one gets elected as a MP one is aware of what is in store and
there can be no complaint on this score.

There can be no room for a theory that MPs should have some extra
income and that they can resort to bribery. Parliament is a trust of
people's aspirations and expectations and there can be no sustenance
to corruption, he said.

Pink pepper, a boon for Indore farmers
Indore | January 09, 2006 5:30:53 PM IST

Farmers of Indore ventured into the cultivation of pink pepper to
provide a substitute of black pepper to the cuisine with some added
flavour and scent.

Farmers find it beneficial as each pink pepper plant with average
height of 7 to 8 feet can produce two to three kilograms of pepper
which costs rupees 400 (nine dollars) to rupees 600 (14 dollars) in
the open market. The plant can be grown with seeds as well as with air
layering of branches.

According to Lakshman Rao, a farmer, I sowed pink pepper three years
back and fruits came after one and half years. First time we usually
get 1.5 kilograms to 2 kilograms of pepper from one plant. But more it
gets older, more pepper it produces. We pluck ripe fruits from the
plants. We have to pluck the immatured fruits carefully, otherwise
they get wasted. Pepper plant has a unique feature that it becomes
more beneficial as it gets older. We can take out several cuttings
from its branches which can be grown separately.

Pink pepper is similar to black pepper not only in taste but also in
effect. It can be used as substitute of black pepper for medicinal
purposes too.

Black pepper is grown only in coastal areas while pink pepper, which
is similar to black pepper in terms of pungency, can be grown even in
planes. Around 400 to 450 plants can be sowed in a hectare of land and
each plant can produce two to three kilograms of pepper. Pepper plant
is a kind of herb and its price is very low. We can use it as a
substitute of black pepper for various purposes. said Shanti Lal
Hamar, Senior Park Development Officer, Indore.

Black soil is ideal for its growth. Average market value of one
kilogram of pink pepper ranges from rupees 150 to 200.

Pepper, the king of all spices is considered as the oldest and best
known spice in the world. The name pepper comes from the Sanskrit word
'pippali' which means berry.

Native to Western Ghats in India, this perennial climbing vine is now
widely cultivated not only in India but also in countries like
Thailand, Africa, Brazil etc. It is ideal for planting in the ground
as well as in a container.

Pepper corns are very strong in aroma and taste and can be stored for
many years without losing its flavor. It is commonly used in all
dishes as a very popular spice and in canned foods as a flavouring
agent. It has medicinal properties for fighting colds, flu and
infections, to energize, increase circulation, to warm and relieve
muscle aches and stiffness etc.

Pepper vine grows to a height of about 10m. The woody stem is smooth
but swollen at the joints. The dark green shiny leaves are broad and
pointed (heart shaped), and arranged alternatively on the stem. The
white, small flowers are borne in clusters in a slender spike and
bears 50-60 small round green fruits, each about 1cm in diameter. When
ripe, the fruits become yellowish red.

Pepper is grown in all seasons through out the year. There are
different varieties of pepper such as Betal pepper (Piper betle),
Indian long pepper (Piper longum), Java long pepper (Piper
retrofractum), Rough leaved pepper (Piper amalago) etc.

The plant prefers well drained loamy soils rich in organic matter with
a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. The plant requires partial shade but fairly high
temperature and sufficient water. The plant can be kept in full sun
but must be shaded during the heat of day to protect against sunscald.
Too much heat can damage the fruit. They need a long season to ripen,
so choose an early variety.

Propagation is usually by stem cuttings and also by seeds. The vine is
usually grown near a tree so that the tree trunks will serve as a
support or a pole is set near it for the vine to climb up. Water to
keep the soil moist but not soggy. If buying a pepper plant, choose
ones with dark green leaves with no blossoms or fruits.

Pepper plants start bearing fruits 2-3 years after planting. The
fruits are ready to be harvested 6-8 months after flowering. They are
usually harvested while they are still green and the best time to pick
them is when fruits lower down the spike begin to redden. But
sometimes the fruits are allowed to ripen before they are picked.
Always cut the fruit spikes from the plant. Avoid pulling them. A
plant can keep on producing for many long years under favourable
conditions.

The fruits are treated in many ways. The

Gujarati painter assimilates Biblical images in Indian milieu for a record
Kalol, Gujarat | January 09, 2006 5:32:06 PM IST

Imagine a thirsty Christ being given the elixir of life by a woman
clad in a village dress from Rajasthan or a vivid image of his
disciples, wearing traditional Indian attire, being served authentic
Indian cuisine during the last supper!

It's a unique concoction, an assimilation of images from the Bible,
but in an Indian milieu.

A poor artist from the small town of Kalol, 40 kilometers from
Gujarat's principle city of Ahmedabad, has virtually mortgaged his
entire belongings to spread his message of peace and brotherhood
around the world.

Driven by a passion to do something different in life, Edwin Parmar
started with nothing more than a few bottles of color and brushes,
leftover from his professional work as a painter of banners and
hoardings in the town.

The idea behind the images, he says, was driven by a thought that if
Christ were to be born in a village in India, how would have his life
been? So in his unique assimilation of Indian and western culture,
Parmar went about showing Mother Mary wearing a sari, the Hindu god
King Rama interacting with Christ and so on.

Parmar, who started work on his project on the 5th of December last
year and has already completed 365 feet of the mural. He plans to
carry on till a breathtaking 470-feet which he hopes to complete by
February.

In these paintings, I have taken inspiration from Indian culture,
some images are Rajasthani, some have a Mughal touch and I have come
up with a completely new concept. The central theme is the Bible and I
want to say that religions have no boundries and in my painting I want
to essentially give a message of peace, he said.

Parmar credits his wife, Elisa, with giving him the inspiration to try
something different, and has since never backtracked in his endeavours
despite facing huge financial problems. His ultimate aim, he says, is
to make it to the Guiness Book of World Records.

Elisa, who donated all her jewellery for the cause, is prepared to do
whatever more is required in his attempt.

We had to face a lot of difficulty but in the end, I hope that he
will be successful in whatever he does, Elisa said.

Parmar spends an average of sixteen hours a day at his magnum opus,
and has already spent around 1000 US dollars on it. While he has met
most of the expenses from his own pocket, he received considerable
help from local Christian associations and the Church to fund his
attempt. Yet, there is still more that he needs and is currently
appealing for donations.(ANI)

'Smart Card', more insurance cover for NRIs, says government
Hyderabad | January 09, 2006 3:40:04 PM IST

A 'smart card', round-the-clock helpline, increased insurance cover
and medical and legal help are among the measures proposed for the
welfare of emigrant Indian workers, the government today said.

The 'smart card', which would help a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) worker
get insurance and medical benefits, will be launched within three
months, said R K Singh, the Protector General of Emigrants, on the
last day of the fourth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

A major demand of NRIs, especially those in the Gulf countries, the
'smart card' was to be launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at
the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here. ''The first 'smart card' was to be
issued by the Prime Minister here, but because of some problems its
launch was postponed,'' said Mr Singh.

Under the proposed Pravasi Bhartiya Bima Yojana, insurance cover will
be increased from the present Rs 200,000 to Rs 500,000. NRIs will be
able to get Rs 50,000 for emergency medical treatment abroad and Rs
25,000 for legal expenses.

The proposals include 24x7 helpline for NRIs in 13 missions in the
Gulf besides in Singapore and Malaysia.

The government also want to give legal aid to overseas workers in case
of labour-related problems, Mr Singh said.

If implemented, the measures are expected to benefit about five
million Indian workers abroad, most of them from Kerala, Andhra
Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

It's time to stop the disco: BJP

BY HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, JAN 8 — Former chief minister Manohar Parrikar has expressed
confidence that the people of Goa have already decided which party to
vote for in the coming Assembly polls and made a plea to the people to
stop the ongoing politics of corruption plaguing the State.
Assembly polls are officially due in 2007, but some say the elections
will come this May. Whatever the case may be, I am confident that
people have already taken a decision whom to vote to rule Goa, he
said at a function held to felicitate him on his 50th birthday here
this evening.
He said the people of Goa have now realised the difference between the
rule during the BJP regime and now. He, however, had a word of advise
for the huge crowd comprising his party workers and well wishers.
Saying that India is a representative democracy, he said people should
vote for Goa as a whole and not just for their constituencies or
wards.
Underscoring the need to save Goa for a host of reasons, Parrikar said
there was no agitation in the State during his tenure as chief
minister. This was because I used to respond to the grievances even
by taking cognizance of press reports, he said.
Referring to the Saleli agitation, he preferred not to go into details
of the incident, but said Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane ought to give
an explanation for not going to Saleli.
Saying that public memory is short and may forget Saleli or the PETs
agitation, Parrikar, however, urged the people to vote for Goa's
identity. Temples, Churches, Gumtis and Chapels are approached with
donations during polls. Many a people vote for a particular candidate
based on an oath taken on a coconut. Even if one takes money, one is
still free to vote as per his conscience, he said.
According to him, his government collapsed after he decided to stop
Babush Monserrate from going out of control. My government did fall,
but it was a God sent opportunity to be in the Opposition. Now I do
believe that people are ready to vote for good governance, he added.
Earlier, Parrikar was felicitated by Margao Municipal Council
Chairperson Piedade Norohna in the presence of MP Shripad Naik.

Hi Maurice,
I hope I am right in assuming that your posts come from America. If so, I am
glad to hear a sane voice after so much bluster from some other American
sources on Goanet.

I agree with you about Iran. From my perspective, it poses one hell of a
problem for the West and effectively for the world. The real dilemma is that
the West and all those states already having nuclear weapons can't use moral
leverage against Iran. Put simply, why is it, for example, OK for India,
Pakistan, and Israel to have the bomb? They are as much of a threat to Iran
as Iran is now becoming to these named countries, let alone those much
further away.

To suggest that the current nuclear powers are basically more democratic and
safer than Iran is a rather weak argument. After all, the USA, a democratic
state, was the first to use the nuclear bomb against Japan. Further, there
is hard evidence that the nuclear bomb was considered for use well after WW2
by Western powers in different places.

The Non-proliferation nuclear Treaty was rightly meant, (despite some
weaknesses in it), to reduce the nuclear military hardware of those
possessing the bomb whilst simultaneously demanding that others do not
proceed to the nuclear option. Unfortunately, it is evident, for all to see
that, the Western nuclear powers, and others, have increased their lethal
arsenals rather than reduce them. There is a double standard here and Iran,
knowing this, is clearly taking the West on whether we like it or not.

If indeed Israel takes Iranian nuclear capability out militarily, by
American proxy, the world will head for even greater danger than ever
before. Sooner rather than later, Iran or another antagonistic state will
have the bomb, and the determination and means to deliver it successfully to
distant destinations including America. The need for intensified diplomacy
is clearly greater than ever before, irrespective of the great temptation to
immediately use a pre-emptive strike against Iran.

The current US admisinstration has authorized ''at least 30 times'' a
program

for spying on Americans in the United States without a warrant. Is this a
crime, an impeachable offense or merely another example of contempt for
the

Constitution ? It shoud be of concern.

In the name of freedom, torture of prisoners, indefinite detention,
secret

jails and warrantless searches of our fellow citizens has taken place.

Just as hard will be the invasion of Iraq, a secular country that posed
no
threat to the United States, which precipitated a civil war that has
handed

power to the religious leadership and an alignment with Iran.

Iran will be a real threat to US interests and that of it's allies,
especially Israel, and just as Americans are sick and tired of a $2
billion a

week exercise in futiliy to remake Iraq in US image(!).

What will an unchecked Iran do?

Threaten Israeli, U.S., and European security.
Increase militancy and embolden hard-liners.
Destabilize the Gulf area.
Encourage other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, to follow.

It is no secret that Iran is developing nuclear, chemical and biological
weapons, though the country is party to conventions curbing them.
Furthermore,

Iran is trying to extend the range of its missiles. Already, the 810-mile
reach of Iran's Shahab-3 missile puts Israel and U.S. forces in the region
in

striking range. And, Iran is trying to develop missiles capable of hitting
western Europe or the United States itself.

Iran is ruled by religious leaders with a messianic mission. It is the
evil
double of the United States; a doppelganger that wants to export
revolutionary
Shiite Islam instead of constitutional democracy. There it sees the path
to

honor, national identity, fidelity to religious tradition and, ultimately,
salvation of the entire world. Unfortunately, it excludes infidels,
especially

Jews.

Calling names in this forum will not help, instead I urge concerned to
divert their energy to where it should be put to better use.

Now walk on the sea floor in Goa!

PTI | January 09, 2006 | 11:51 IST

India's first adventurous underwater sea walk project has been
launched in Goa, with Mumbai-based H20 Private Limited offering its
clients an opportunity to walk on the sea floor and get a clear view
of marine life.

One can walk for 20 minutes underwater enjoying the pristine water
world. Swimmers and non-swimmers alike can enjoy this unique
opportunity to explore the heart of the sea safely, stated Rajiv
Somani, managing director, H20 Private Limited.

The company has initiated the project on Goa's Baina beach in south
Goa. It also runs an adventure sports project at Girgaum Chowpatty in
Mumbai.

Somani feels that tourists are major clientele for this walk, which is
first of its kind in the country. India is one of the fastest growing
countries in terms of tourism demand and there is a huge vacuum that
needs to be filled in the leisure sports and entertainment sector,
said Somani.

The company hopes to create landmark in water sports in Goa, he said.

We began at Chowpatty with a turnover of Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million)
in the year 2000-2001 and the turnover has reached Rs 12.8 million in
the year 2004-2005, informed Somani.

Troy came to Canada when he was 8 years old, and was educated in Victoria

served as a reserve artillery officer, achieving the rank of captain. He is a

Let us propose the name of US President George W. Bush for the Nobel
Peace Prize next year for his brilliant conception and execution of
the plan to promote freedom and democracy in Afghanistan and Iraq
out of the barrel of a gun!

Tony,

It would be wonderful to see a man who has put an end to the brutal
regimes of the Taliban and Saddam Hussein to be recognized for the
freedom he's helped to orchestrate for 50 million of the world's
people--in the face of so much opposition to the freedom of these 50
million human beings.

However, would George Bush want to join the ranks of Nobel Peace Prize
winners? One such laureate claimed with pride that he had invented
airplane hijacking as an effective means of communication. Another is
known for his great admiration for and dialogue with tyrants. Here's
another Nobel Peace Laureate expressing his deep sympathy and concern
for the terrorist who was convicted for the killing of 270 people

is a psychological persecution that a man must stay for the length of

Tony, it would be slap in the face of true peace- and freedom-loving

Dear Phillip,

By no means am I casting aspersions on the unfortunate
pilot. Just suggesting a possibility, in view of my
recent encounter of a local doctor (more or less 50
years of age) whose cognitive abilities have
degenerated exponentially.

My layman's hunt earlier had led me to understand
there is a disease called Huntingdon's Disease, which
may have played a part in this doctor's condition,
which may very well have played part in the pilot's as
well, in view of the pilot's earlier published fears
(JC's comments having been noted). That's all.

One thing having led to another, I also suspect the
following.

We in Goa as elsewhere, have progressed from cooking
in clay-pots and copperware to cooking in aluminium
vessels. Way back in the 70s, when my uncle from
Mozambique came to pay us a visit (he was a surgeon),
he advised us against using aluminium pans for
cooking, especially acidic foods such as curries,
which he said could lead to aluminium ingestion
leading to mental degeneration. I have read that
though probable but not conclusive, that aluminium
thus ingested could lead to alzheimer's.

And as some housewives like to have nice shiny pots,
everytime they scrub their aluminium pots bright (thus
removing the 'protective' oxide layer), they expose
more fresh aluminium for ingestion (the oxide layer is
relatively inactive, imho). Perhaps some further
medical research is warranted in the link of aluminium
to mental degeneration (unless there already exists)
in the Indian context.

Cheers,

Gabriel de Figueiredo.

P.S. It is said that the Roman Empire collapsed,
among other things, due to technical progress,
wherein clay piping was substituted with lead piping
in chanelling potable water, leading to slow lead
poisoning. Whether this is fact or fiction I have no
idea at the moment.
