Re: [Goanet] Re: Reservations rears its ugly head again!

2006-04-23 Thread Jason Monserrate
Dear George,

You seem to have a problem with the creation of a
level playing field for all where everyone has and
gets equal opportunity.

In your own words
"Regarding the IIM and IITs, I think it is a point in
my favor. Who
benefits? Those who have a good education,
middle-class and upwards can access the system. Then
they get good paying jobs and are rewarded
financially. They build wealth for themselves and
their children and the unjust cycle continues - the
haves have more and the have-nots have nothing. How
and where do Dalits and other marginalized groups get
in? The technology which comes out of the IITs does
help, but how much? Does a computer, jet airplane,
etc. help the rural farmer? Does it help the Dalit who
is left to clean streets, toilets, and other
low-paying work? Or is it building IPods, plasma TVs,
racecars?"

So you propose that we allot seats in these
institutions for people based on their caste and
background, and not on the basis of their
qualification and ability, so that in the long run,
you think that these people will come up in life.

Very good.

What is the best way to get the dalit out of a life of
cleaning streets, toilets, and other low-paying work?

You have the answer to that too, you say
"allocate IIM and IIT seats NOW to marginalized groups
and we will all
be better off in the long run, rather than a narrow
segment of society gaining the benefits of society and
a large group suffering its burdens."

Great indeed.

An IIT and IIM is like village tennis court after all,
where anyone can jump in.
Fine; so be it. So let's suppose i am a member of a
marginalised caste and i have low scores and yet i
make it to the top institute in the country. To
succeed at that level, you need some foundation. By
foundation i mean knowledge of the subject at hand and
basic skills that will ensure i can cope with the
standard of teaching there. Do i have it?

So here is your solution to the problem. Get the
dalits to complete class 12 somehow. By hook or by
crook. Reserve seats in IITs. Convince the private
sector to give them jobs. And then begins upliftment
through the wealth generated by the marginalised
castes.

Here is my solution. No reservations in higher
education institutes. Eligibility criteria for entry
is the same for all. Free, compulsory english
education till graduation for all marginalised castes.
Seats and jobs are allotted to the best of the lot
when all have been given equal opportunity. This will
take time and effort but ensure the quality of
candidates passing out is not compromised.

As regards your observation that the best do not get
to the top, i have one thing to say. If Dhirubhai
Ambani, Bill Gates, Subhash Chandra Goel, Henry Ford,
Paul Allen, N R Narayana Murthy and all had to all
think that wealth cannot be created unless it is
created by someone else, then you can draw your own
conclusions. It is not important where you stand but
what is more important is in which direction you are
moving. The people who are crazy enough to think they
can change the world are the ones who do.

Regards,
Jason.

Here is an excerpt from one of the links I forwarded along with the

'The cancer of religious bigotry and intolerance has afflicted all
communities-Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians. This is vividly
brought out in Edna Fernandes's powerful book. Holy Warriors is as fair
and objective an assessment of the perils that lie ahead for India as
any that I have ever read. It is a must for all of those who wish this
country to prosper as a secular democracy.' -Khushwant Singh

I don't understand your comment "In keeping with Goan character", please

[Goanet] Indians apply to UK universities in caste wars

2006-04-23 Thread Gabe Menezes
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2148001,00.html
Indians apply to UK universities in caste wars
Dean Nelson, Delhi

MIDDLE-CLASS students from across India are flocking to apply to
British universities as plans to double the quota of places for
"Untouchables" at Indian colleges leave them feeling squeezed out.

The move will be voted on by the Delhi parliament next month. It is
aimed at ending the social stain associated with appalling treatment
of the low-caste Untouchables.

But it has split the country and sparked fears of inter-caste
violence. Trainee doctors joined other students protesting in Delhi
last week.

British universities expect to cash in as many higher-caste students
find themselves unable to get a place at home and start to look
abroad.

The new rules will reserve almost half of university places for the
lower castes.

There is resentment that the quotas will inevitably force up entry
requirements for the remaining places.

The number of Indian students entering British universities rose from
16,000 to almost 18,000 last year and a further boost is expected this
year as panic spreads at India's exclusive private schools.

In the past six months more than 100,000 Indian pupils have contacted
the British Council for advice on obtaining university places in
Britain.

Kabir Bedi, 17, is among those prompted to apply because of his
government's plans. He says he has had offers from York, Nottingham
and Bath.

He would prefer to go to St Stephen's College at Delhi University but
believes the minimum entrance requirement this year will be too
stringent. "My friends are going to have a very hard time this year
and I feel angry about it," he said.

Alka Malhotra, whose son is hoping for a place at one of the elite
Indian institutes of technology, said too many students were competing
for too few places, and this was putting both parents and pupils under
intense pressure. "It's a numbers game. Kids need 90% passes to apply
for the best colleges," she said.

The anger of higher-caste parents and their offspring is lost,
however, on Bant Singh, 40, a leading campaigner for the rights of
Punjab's dalits, as the Untouchables are known.

"I'm all for reservations in colleges and government jobs, and I'm not
bothered what the middle class thinks," he said last week.

One of his legs and both arms were amputated earlier this year after
he was beaten with iron bars. His remaining leg is pinned together
with steel rods, and his toes are black with gangrene.

His crime was to campaign for justice after his 19-year-old daughter
was raped by two of his landlords' sons. His fate was sealed when he
refused the landlords' offer of £12,000 and a scooter to drop the
charges.

Dalits are the lowest of the Hindu castes and are regarded as unclean
by the highest Brahmin, or priestly, caste.

They are excluded from Hindu temples and banned from drinking from the
same wells as higher castes. They have even been attacked for casting
their shadows over Brahmins.

More than 40m of India's 250m dalits are reported to work in slave
conditions. Their jobs include skinning cows in tanneries, pig
farming, farm labouring, rag-picking and night-soil carrying — picking
up human waste and carrying it in baskets on their heads.

India's constitution formally banned discrimination against dalits in
1950 and quotas were established to reserve 22% of all government jobs
and university places for them. But more than half a century later
violent attacks, poor access to education and healthcare and regular
humiliation persist.

More than 120,000 assaults on dalits were reported to the police
between 2001 and 2004. Campaigners say a dalit is assaulted every two
hours, while two are murdered every day. Most assaults go unreported
for fear of further attack.

In Mansa hospital near Patiala, Punjab, Bant Singh said he supported
any reforms that would help families like his. He has eight children.
None is heading for university.

Nasci,

There was nothing subtle in my statement that,
according to secularism as enshrined in the Indian
constitution, all religions, as well as of the absence
of religion, are equal in all respects. What you are
talking about is some kind of religious caste/class
system where you hold your own religion and, perhaps,
certain other religions in higher esteem than others.
As for the questions you ask, and some points you

[Goanet] Re: Review on the Reviewer

2006-04-23 Thread gilbertlaw
Re: Review on "Holy Warriors" by Edna Fernandes

Victor makes several important points. I have not read the original book. Yet
as Victor points out, I have written books, non-scientific and scientific
articles, which have been published. Hence, I have dealt with many reviewers
and commentators.

Firstly, a book or article is not written for the reviewers. The reviewer
("supposedly" expert) has to keep in mind the target audience of the book and
not his / her PERCEPTION of what the script is /should cover. Books are
written to re-emphasize the known (and this introduction should help the good
reviewers) and further explore FROM the writer's perspective (NOT the
reviewer's) what is the impact of the material/ article/ data that is being
written about.

If the reviewer cannot understand and expand on these aspects, I question the
IQ of the reviewer. Of course I'd expect the reviewer to outline the
limitations of the work, if the author had not done so in the prologue or
epilogue. Any writer embarks on the writing effort in order to FILL a perceived
VOID in the understanding (at whatever level). The writing is NOT undertaken to
exploit the readers and make money. In fact in many cases the writing is
undertaken with full understanding that there is no reimbursement. Yet the
ignorance out there (including the reviewers) motivates the writer(s).

The book / article is the writer's work. Reviewers can write their own book to
emphasize what he / she considers important rather than being a free-loader on
someone else's work. If the reviewer is PRATAP BHANU MEHTA and the writer is
EDNA FERNANDES, the reviewer should APPRECIATE the perspectives of a
minority-group writer. Her script reflects some ASPECTS of the minority group
persecuted by the dominant religious-fanatic groups. None of this came out in
the review. This in itself reflects the ignorance and arrogance of the
reviewer, (not uncommon mistake), whatsoever may his ethnic background.

I hope this rather lengthy response will help and enable future reviewers on
the STANDARDS of good reviewers. For more details and reviewer pitfalls,
please read my three-part article on the "experience of writing 'On Thin Ice'"
which appeared on Goanet.

[Goanet] The deed of Judas Iscariot

2006-04-23 Thread Antonio Menezes
Two thousand years ago, there appeared in the sky a rare phenomenon of
conjunction of the planets of Jupiter and Saturn. As the days passed
by, its brightness grew so much that to the untrained eyes it looked
as if a new star was being born.

The conjunction did not go unnoticed by the wise men of the east who
were known as magi. They had especialized not only in astrology but
in astronomy as well. They made their calculations about the time and
place where it would have its strongest influence. So a place was
chosen and it was Betlehem in Judaea.

Three magi followed the conjunction and at a predetermined time
looked for a baby that was born at one precise moment. They found the
baby in a manger and made the offering of gold, frankincense and
myrrh. The unusual search for a baby by the magi soon reached the
ears of king Herod who was determined to snuff out the life of the
future king of the jews., The parents fled to Egypt with the baby to
escape the wrath of Herod and let us say that magi went with them to
Egypt as well not to loose track of this wonderful child who was born
under most auspicious circumstances.

In due course of time, the magi could have convinced the parents to
part with their child whom they were anxious to take away with them
back to the east where the unusual child would be entrusted to the
care of the oriental mystics. Nothing is known about his life till
he came back to Judaea at the age of 30. Obviously, he was under
intense and rigorous training all those years and appears to have
mastered the art of manipulating not only the karma ( the
accumulation of sins of one's previous lives ) of his own divine
spark but as well as that of others.

He came back to Judaea and started his ministry of teaching ,
preaching and healing that lasted for about three years.

He healed people who had all kinds of disease and sickness.
He drove out evil spirits that haunted some people
He made cripples walk.
He restored the sight of bling people.
He made dumb talk.
He raised people from the dead.

According to some oriental scholars, when one performs miracles that
person has to pay the price. The karmas of the beneficiaries of
miracles are transferred and heaped upon the performer of miracles.

Is it any wonder the young man was so exhausted with the burden of
extraneous karmas that he wished to release the divine spark in him
from the human bondage. The only apostle, Judas Iscariot, whose
intellect was much above that of the rest of the apostles appears to
have understood him well.

[Goanet] Floriano's Sunday Ramblings

2006-04-23 Thread floriano

Since yesterday, every time one think about the charismatic BJP Leader
Pramod Mahajan, automatically one switches on the telly to NDTV 24 x 7 for a
running commentary on his critical condition.

Today, my sister-in-law who comes visiting her sister every evening asked
her a silly question after making a favourable comment on the excellent
services dished out by NDTV. And from the bathroom, as I was trimming my
hair and my beard, which is my Sunday routine ( BTW I have forgotten what it
is like to sit on a barber's chair) I heard her ask her sister this silly
question: What is ND Tv? . I shouted a question to her from the bathroom
"Do you remember the fabled ENDO Inas? (This guy was the idiot of the
village who couldn't get anything right and we Goans have all grown-up
admiring his prowess). My sister-in -law shouted back "Yes". To that I
shouted back "Well, Endo Inas was a male and ND Tv is a female".

Being a Sunday today, my wife cooked all the things I love to eat on a
Sunday afternoon, stacked all the hundies on the range, issued me laborious
instructions and went off visiting some relations in far away Curtorim. When
she pecked me on my bearded cheek, I told her to say hello to our Hon'ble
Speaker in case she ran into him. "Why will I run into him" she retorted
adding that Curtorim was a big enough place. "You miss my point" I told her.
"Sonsodo, remember? It is on your way. Incase you get a whiff of scent in
the air instead of the garbage stink, that means Sardinha is around."

And it is approaching 3rd. May soon. Our Pirazona chapel feast is on that
day. The Novenas have started and hence the morning Sunday Mass is in the
evening instead. As I was at my mother's place ( just a stone's throw away)
to check on her (she is 84 and quite fit), it struck me that she was not
aware of the Holy Cross Chapel's evening Mass. So I casually said to her
"why don't you just go for the Mass instead of shifting around?" "It will do
you a lot of good". And to my surprise she did just that. As I was playing
around with a silly idea on my welding machine at my work-shed, I shouted
to her to keep the house keys just in case I required something from the
house. She threw the keys and was off. When she came back, she came to me
for the keys and started a non stop sermon as to how good it feels when one
goes for a Sunday Mass et al. And what it seemed like the end of the sermon,
she said this: "And you ! Couldn't you go for Mass instead of doing this
useless thing? Work is always there. Those poor priest are not doing what
they are doing for nothing. You will burn in hell. And then there will be no
one to blame but yourself. "Burn in hell?" "How do you know I will go to
heaven if I went to Sunday Mass?" I asked. "Listen mother" I told her, "You
went for Mass and you feel good. Keep it that way. Don't spoil that feeling
by trying to tell others how nice it feels. Let others be curious at your
extremely good feeling and follow in your foot-steps". "You know me" I told
her. "When I see hypocrites more holier than the holy, it gives a bad taste
in my mouth and I lose the good feeling that I already have".

And the last look I had on the running update on Pramod Mahajan on the ND
Tv, I said a little prayer for him. A small one at that. And why not? Entire
India is praying for poor Pramod Mahajan. Vajpayee, Advani, Amithab Bachan,
Anil Ambani, even Sonia Gandhi and Pratapsing Rane. From the sanctity of our
living-rooms, it all looks like a big flop show when one sees the
sanctimonious mugs that are offering the prayers. Thank God it was only his
own side-lined kid brother. If it was any one else like a Congresswalla, a
Khalistani etc, the entire nation would be at war and there would have been
many many more deaths. Never mind that, but I actually said a few soothing
words to the one who had suffered more than what Pramod Mahajan is probably
suffering under the oxygen mask. "Shivani Batnagar" I said, "only you will
know the extent of his sufferings. They couldn't be more than what you went
through."

[Goanet] I CARE FOR MARGAO INITIATIVE -- A SUCCESS

2006-04-23 Thread godfrey gonsalves
" I care for Margao Initiative " may sound absurd --
for given the state of civic sense and its affairs --
filth, squalor, garbage, traffic chaos, there
could'nt be any Margaoite in Margao (which by the way
includes Fatorda region as well of BJP MLA Damodar
(Damu) Naik) who would not care for Margao.

The political chammeleon Mr Digamber Kamat INC MLA
Margao also the Minister for Power Mining and Culture
has still not reconciled to his fate of not being a
CM from the "near CM status" he enjoined with the BJP.

Add to this --the Civic Council has had its second
Chairperson within the first five months of the new
body elect (2005 -2010) while the upright Chief
Officer Mr Melwyn Vaz now in his eight month was
nearly mauled in his office by the Opposition
Councillors with leanings towards BJP / NCP.

Hence there is chaos chaos and more chaos in Margao
today.

So the three day (21st April to 23rd April 2006) "
Down to Earth " Jazz Fest organised in association
with the Department of Culture and Department of
Information and Publicity Govt of Goa to coincide with
the World Earth Day on 22nd April promised to make a
new initiative for the "improvement of Margao city"
wiht the involvement of the citizens.

There was jazz music performances in the past two days
and at the grand finale today evening at the "Ana
Fonte" Gardens Near BPS CLub Pajifond Margao the large
summer vacationing crowd of women children and youth
were treated to good music and songs by Sharon &
Spice ( Wilson and Sharon tiatrists) , and earlier
Joanne D Mello with the Rocky and Rui Show did the
honours for the evening.

But the duo that recieved the public applause and
"once more" chorus was Dr Francisco Colaco and his
beautiful daughter in tow for their excellent numbers
in English and Portugues sung with the music
accompaniment of Status Quo.

Later yet another good performance came from "Whoopie
Steve Sequeira and Kitu who have come down from
Mumbai.

It was left to Prince Jacob to make mention that
Margao does need to improve it does need to have civic
sense , but he also lamented the fact that the amounts
one crore (with the Central Government contributing
Rs 30 lacs )spent for the rejuvenation of the 5000 m2
area Ana Fonte (spring ) since declared open on 25
January, 2006 was indeed misused because "the toilets
which were to be provided and manned by Sulabh
Sauchalaya have not been installed yet . Even the
paint on the facade of the spring interiors have faded
in just three months while the flow of the spring
waters too is not well maintained in respect to its
cleanliness and hygiene.

While the evening was a sure treat for all the message
perhaps carried is that Margao will now show the way.
It may be recalled that the Corporation of City of
Panaji did initiate such a campaign and they have
infact succeeded to a great extent in beautifying the
city. Better late then Never and Margao surely will
show the way, for other cities to follow suit.

Sidelight of the event:
a) some citizens were wondering how come such events
are being held at the spring venue when earlier the
venue was intended only for children items; both Mr
Kamat and Deputy CM Dr Wilfred A De Souza in the
presence of CM had vowed at the inaugural
b) there were repeated reminders to the audience to
send their litter to the waste bins
c) Prince Jacob "long sermonising" was not taken too
kindly by the onlookers around the periphery of the
spring -- perhaps Prince mistook this event for his
tiatr one onlooker commented.
d) the Ana Fonte garden is an excellent venue and the
lungs of Margao -- surely there could be no better
venue for children and women -- Mr Kamat does deserve
the credit -- even though the project took over eight
years to complete
e) for Ethel D'Costa the Panaji based youthful journo
columnist and organiser her indulgence in Margao and
its new initiatives was indeed a rewarding experience
-- Margaoites could benefit more from her organising
skills, and experience in the coming days.

[Goanet] Wrong Claim for true ...but which claim ? - a response to Lambert

2006-04-23 Thread Dr. Jos Colao

Wrong Claim (In Goa Today by Lambert Mascarenhas)

The claim of the Consul general of Portugal, Senhor Pedro Cabral Adao in an
interview with a
local publication "that there are high expectations of Portugal here and it
is difficult to meet the expectations of all kinds of people..." sounds
amusing to me who fought to drive away the unwanted Portugal from Goa and
India. By this token of repulsion, in the manner it was done, by force, how
can Goa expect anything from Portugal? To the sensitive and cultured Goans,
and to the Goan Freedom Fighters particularly, the comment of the Consul
General seems misconstrued and misplaced. Unwanted Portugal was ousted. So
how can the ouster expect favours from the dispossessed?

According to me, the only people who could be expecting something from
Portugal are a
section of the Goan rabble that is applying to Portugal for its citizenship,
not true Goan Indians, who are patriotic and proud to be Indians.

In fact, arguably, it is a great mistake on the part of the ex-President of
Portugal, Mario Soares (who I had the pleasure of shaking hands with on his
visit to Goa) to declare the Goans born prior to 1961, Liberation of Goa, as
Portuguese citizens, a declaration that is bound to cause Portugal itself,
facing general European phase of unemployment, a problem. It is to be
pointed out to Senhor Adao that some Goans already granted Portuguese
citizenship are illiterate, speaking not only a single word of Portuguese,
but even that of English.

On behalf of Goa Freedom Fighters and also of Goan people in general, I am
hereby stating, even affirming, that the proud Goans expect or want nothing
from Portugal. We are, however, appreciative, even amazed, at the hand of
friendship and expression of offer of help from democratic Portugal to
India. Had Dr. Antonio Salazar experienced the winds of change and come to
an amicable settlement, so desired by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, all
would have been well.

Lambert Mascarenhas

== response by José Colaço

Dear Editor of Goa Today,

I am not very certain that the Portuguese Consul-General Senhor Pedro Cabral
Adao and Lambert Mascarenhas are on the same page.

Was Senhor Adao referring to the expectations of Goa when he referred to
'Expectations from
Portugal' or was he referring to the expectations of thousands of Goan
applicants for Portuguese Nationality?

Mr. Mascarenhas asks 'how can the ouster expect favours from the
dispossessed?'. Intriguing
question given the daily lines of Goans sitting patiently in the waiting
room of the Goa Consulate – some for decades. Besides, is it really a
favour, or a right as far as the genuine Goan applicants are concerned?

It's not very clear why Mr. Mascarenhas is so concerned about the effect,
the issuance of
Portuguese passports to genuine Goan applicants, will have on Portugal's
unemployment. It is after all Portugal's headache. Is it not? Let Portugal
deal with it.

The point remains that most Goans who obtain Portuguese nationality, have
the opportunity
that Europe affords its citizens. As with anything else, those Goans who
work hard will succeed. Those who do not, will not.

With regards to the allegedly illiterate Goans who have been granted
Portuguese nationality, I'd like us to remind ourselves that if these
allegedly illiterate Goans have a legal right to Portuguese nationality, it
is their right. From the little I know, legal rights are quite independent
of literacy.

I contest Mr. Mascarenhas' ‘Goan rabble - application to Portugal for
citizenship' blanket comment.
There are many learned and distinguished Goans who have have migrated to
Portugal; among them is the very learned Goan historian Dr. Teotonio de
Souza. There are many other Goan surnames one is likely to find in Portugal;
surnames like Correia Afonso, Coutinho, Brito, da Costa, Colaco-Dias,
Soares, de Abreu Noronha and Coisoro. Does Mr. Mascarenhas seriously believe
that these Goans qualify for the title of rabble? The very least Mr.
Mascarenhas could have done was qualify his comment.

About freedom fighters, patriotism and the rest, I wonder if Mr Mascarenhas
would classify Loyola Furtado and Pundalik Gaitonde as unpatriotic just
because they opted to leave Goa and migrate to Portugal.

I'd add here that the Indian Government is smart, and has let the past ills
of the Portuguese go with the water under the bridge. After all, India knows
that despite the rhetoric and bravado, we are all Saints and Sinners in one
form.

India and Portugal now have a close working relationship. I do understand
that for some, the only glory is the beating of past and irrelevant (in
present day terms) drums. Even so, it might be worth remembering that we
all stand to benefit if more among us would grow up and look to a future of
cooperation and benefit for all.

The repeated claims of Lambert and his compadres reminds me of the claims of
 Macho Men

[Goanet] Goan Custom - 'ROS' Ceremony!

2006-04-23 Thread domnic fernandes

Dear Goanetters,

An overseas Goan who would not like her name disclosed, sent me a private
email enquiring about Goan custom - women giving a coconut bath for the
bride. She said she was not familiar with what that stood for and asked me
if I could enlighten her on this and the procedure involved. Here is an
abridged version of my reply to her which I thought I would post on Goanet
for the benefit of all:

Goan Custom – 'ROS’ Ceremony

According to Goan traditions, the bride and groom are required to bathe in
coconut juice (mixed with water) on the night prior to the wedding in
her/his house. Relatives, friends and neighbors join in to pour coconut
juice over the bride/groom, as per the custom. Afterwards, dinner is served
to all. The outfits worn during the coconut juice bath have to be given
away and not kept in the house, as it is believed it brings bad luck. After
the bath, the bride and groom are not supposed to leave the house till they
leave for the church on the next day. In the past, they became totally
incommunicado but today they can keep in touch with each other through
telephone/cell phone!

The ceremony of applying coconut milk and the luxurious bath that follows is
a grand preparation for the wedding day; it’s all about purifying oneself
for the big day. In the olden days, the application of ros meant sign of
purity - that the girl and boy are pure; this may sound absurd today but it
was possible then. It’s a ritual where the bride/groom is ceremoniously
massaged with coconut juice. It is meant to make the skin smooth and soft,
especially for the bride. In those days, there was no special make up or
hair style on a wedding day. As such, neither the bride nor the groom was
bothered about the after effect of coconut juice massage on her/his face or
hair. Today, both are equally concerned, especially the bride who fears the
skin on her face may crack and her hair may become rough and turn into a
mess on the wedding day!

The bride and brides mate/the groom and best man are made to sit opposite
the home altar on two "bankinam" (small flat wooden stools).

Two "vattleo" (brass plates) – nowadays any large bowls are used - filled
with ros are placed in front of them.

The ros ceremony begins with special singers singing “vovieo” (ros-related
Konkani songs). Every time a relative approaches the bride/groom to apply
ros, his/her relationship is mentioned in the line of the song.

The ros is first applied by the mother and father of the bride/groom
followed by married family couples, brothers, sisters, the elders,
relatives, friends and neighbors. The mother/father first makes a sign of
the cross on the forehead of the bride/groom with ros and while doing so
he/she says "Saiba moje dhuvecher/putacher bessanv ghal.” (Lord, please
bless my daughter/son).

In case mother or father is a widow/widower, the eldest daughter and
son-in-law, or daughter-in-law and son give the lead, as a widow/widower
cannot lead such a ceremony - it is considered a bad sign. She/he then
pours some ros on the head and applies it to other parts of the body.

Each relative/friend/neighbor drops a coin in the juice, takes a palm full
and massages the bride/groom. Some just do the formality - dip fingers in
the bowl, touch the cheeks and walk away. But many close relatives, friends
and next door neighbors do the real massaging of each part of the body along
with comments thus:

They pour juice on the head, massage it and say: “Tokli thond uronk” (To
keep your head cool).

They massage the eyes and say: “Dixtt vaddonk” (To improve your eyesight).
They massage the ears and say: “Borem aikonk” (To improve your hearing).
They massage the nose and say: “Nakache pudd ugtte zavnk ani borem ungunk”
(To clear the nostrils and sniff good things).
They massage the cheeks and say: “Gal anik bore porzollunk” (For cheeks to
shine more brightly).
They massage the hands and say: “Zaitem kam korunk zai dekun hath ghott
assonk zai” (There is lot of work to do; hence, you must have strong hands).
They massage the legs and say: “Paem ghott zavnk zai mainger cholon ievnk"
(Your legs must become strong to come walking to your mother's house).
They massage the back and say: "Patticho konno ghott asonk zai, pattir vozon
ghevnk" (Your backbone must be strong to carry load).
Some women place their hand inside bride’s dress, massage the chest and say:
“Horddem ghott zavnk zai bhurgeak subeij dudh mellonk” (Your chest must be
strong to produce more milk for the child); etc.

When ros ceremony is over, the woman who had ground ros collects the bowls
and gets to keep the money for her.

Participants, especially the elders utter "tumcher Devachem bessanv poddonv”
(may God bless you) while applying the ros. Obviously, the parents and
everyone present for the ros wish the bride/groom all the best in her/his
married life. Marriage is a cross which one has to carry from the day

[Goanet] Well known East African goan hockey players

2006-04-23 Thread Tony Barros
Thanx Meryvyn for giving me my first glimpse of the very young
Anthony "Pop" Mendes and the late Julius Fernandes whose January
19, 1969 unfortunate auto accident I covered for the then
"Standard"-later "Daily News" newspaper in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

A few months later I interviewed Inspector Carneiro - the coach of
the Moshi-based Police Training School (PTS) soccer team in Northern
Tanzania after the PTS won the inter Police soccer championship.
That was a year before I handed over the reins to my good friend and
well known sports writer - John DeSilva. I do not know Inspector
Carneiro's sports background.

[Goanet] Goan Tiatro in Kuwait.

2006-04-23 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes

HARXEANT HANSLO HARXEANT RODDLO.

As announced earlier, Salu Faleiro attained a milestone in his dramatic
career spanning over 20 years starting from Goa by successfully staging his
maiden full length Tiatro in Kuwait on Friday 21st of this month at Hawally
A/C Hall. Very many of his associates and colleagues in the profession
underestimated him but with the help of God and with the total cooperation
from his closest friends and well wishers Salu Faleiro attained victory. To
stage a Tiatro in Kuwait is not a joke; it requires lot of efforts and
sacrifices. Salu Faleiro attained this success also thru his humility. He
is not a boisterous and yapper. He is quiet and soft spoken person. He is
not even speaking against his own detractors but says humbly “May God
forgive them”. That over 75 % of the audience attended his drama itself is a
sterling feature of his prowess. Though the Tiatro was scheduled to start at
3.30 p.m. but finally it started at 4.35.

The story is according to my observation appreciated by the audience even
though here and there one could make out some flaws. Since according to my
information the director is likely to stage this Tiatro elsewhere in the
Gulf and Goa, I am refraining from giving full details of the story but as
a whole it is good story and every artiste played his part well. But
amongst all, the role played by Anil Pednekar as a destructive man deserve
highest compliments. He was the centre of attraction. Here I say once
again that he is the best character actor on Konkani Stage today. In Kuwait
the director exhausted all the avenues to find one from the local talent but
none reached to the expectation of the director and hence Anil Pednekar was
brought on top priority and that he came when his own Tiatro is running in
Goa is another excellence of Anil Pednekar. Lovely looker Jessica with her
stylish dress code did her role well and Adrian supported the play with his
magnificent performance. The others who stole the show were husband and
wife duet of Sylvester Vaz and his highly literate wife Irene. Both played
stellar roles in raising the level of the Tiatro. Their lovely son of around
7-8 also acted along with his parents and dazzled the audience. In the
history of Tiatro Master Vaz had a unique distinction of starting his stage
career at an early age during those days and for this reason the name coined
as Master. Later on in mid fifties Bab Lipo proved to be the second stage
artiste in the history to act amongst the professional as a small boy. Bab
Lipo that time was shining like a star in Aristedes Dias’ magnificent Tiatro
“DOIA” – such a Tiatro I am yet to see on Konkani Stage. Even in remote
parts of the villages in Goa it was staged twice when Tiatros in Goa were
staged without Mike system and without electricity; Petromax was the need of
the hour then and in the absence of Buses; Caminhao, Cycles and walking bare
footed with the help of “Chuttancheo Uzvaddi” people used to come to watch
the Tiatros then.

The comedy roles played by visiting artiste comedian Jesus Antao, comedian
Philip, comedian Mario and comedian Querobina were hilarious. Scripted,
directed and coached by Jesus Antao, the audience had a great time in
enjoying every bit of their comedy and because of this type of comedy the
enhancement of Tiatro increaded. It was very nice to see comedian Philip
displaying his natural talent which remained hidden in Kuwait for a long
period due to non-acting in many of the previous Tiatros and opting only for
selected few. I am sure he will open the gate for him to perform in more
and more tiatros so that his talent is exposed and people are entertained.
He has natural talent to perform. I have first time seen him in Arso of
Roseferns along with Prince Jacob some years back in Goa. Comedian Mario
also did his comedy role well, so too Querobina. In Kuwait because of petty,
volatile and temporary system of “To Aslear Aum Nachona” and in order to
support the analyst of this system some of the talented tiatrists remained
away from acting in more and more tiatros and thereby kept their talent
hidden. I hope now at least the concerned artistes will open their eyes and
read the writings on the wall. There is a sying in Konkani “Har nachta
mhonn Gainddo nachlear zaina”. One fine morning “Har Kuwaitcho nanch zatolo
pun Gaindde varear ubtele”. This will be the pity of the whole situation.

Though the side show songs were many yet due to the defective Mike system it
was difficult for many in the audience to get clear meanings of all the
songs. Besides, some of the artistes while singing were keeping more
distant from the mike and thereby destroying the beauty of their songs.
Mike system is the main culprit for spoiling the clarity of the songs in
Kuwait as a whole. Besides Mike system, Organist also denied some in the
audience from listening clearly the expressions of the artistes. It

[Goanet] Beyond "The Da Vinci Code": What is the Priory of Sion?

2006-04-23 Thread Holy Spirit Interactive
Beyond "The Da Vinci Code": What is the Priory of Sion?

by Massimo Introvigne

In The Da Vinci Code, author Dan Brown claims that the Priory of Sion "is a
real organization", "a European secret society founded in 1099": "In 1975
Paris Bibliothèque Nationale discovered parchments known as Les Dossiers
Secrets, identifying numerous members of the Priory of Sion, including Sir
Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Leonardo da Vinci". All this in a
preliminary page under the title FACTS (as opposed to fiction). Considering
the cavalier treatment in the novel of early Catholic history and the Opus
Dei, one may raise some questions about the Priory of Sion, too. And rightly
so.

The Priory of Sion is an esoteric order legally established in France in 1956
by Pierre Plantard (1920-2000), yet claiming great antiquity. Legends
connected with the Priory of Sion have generated great interest through the
years, particularly as a result of the publication in 1982 of The Holy Blood
and the Holy Grail by British journalists Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and
Henry Lincoln. The story starts with Father Berenger Saunière (1852-1917),
whose last name is also borrowed in The Da Vinci Code, who in 1885 became the
parish priest of Rennes-le-Château, a small village in the French region of
Aude, near the Pyrenees Mountains. Saunière, it seems, was a rather strange
character, deeply interested in symbolism; he also had a penchant for building
a number of constructions around his parish church, including a bizarre neo-
gothic "Tower of Magdala".

Dear Mr. Pinheiro,

You are absolutely right. I live near the Fatorda Stadium and came by train
from bombay to margao and our train was late by about 5 hours. At the margoa
station, the rickshaw drivers refuse to come saying its very close by and to
add to our predicament while we had no baggage just hand bags there were no
buses that we could take. Finally one rickshaw driver agreed saying he would
charge us Rs.100 and we agreed cause there was no other solution.

There should be a bus from the margao station to city or the bus stand.

Why do they not ply City buses from Kadamba bus stand to Margao railway

Dear Valmiki,

I'm not sure if Goa has this already but maybe a
certain investment should be made in "highway patrol
cops". These are generally cops on power bikes or
cars, who will chase after you on a highway, siren
blasting, until they catch up with you. I've not seen
them in Goa but then again maybe they do exist and
I've just never encountered them.

[Goanet] Re: Moira contrversy

2006-04-23 Thread Olav Menezes
Vivian D'Souza and Mario Fernandes are two persons I admire and hold in high
esteem.

They have left behind their 'sussegad' life-style in the US and UK,
respectively, to settle in our beloved Goa, at Soccoro and Divar. Day to day,
they undergo the same trials and tribulations like any ordinary Goan brother
and sister. So when they speak, I listen.

To this short list I now add the name of Manuel Caldeira. This definitely
shifts me out of the impartial category, so Vivian's initiative to seek an
impartial assessment of of what he calls the 'Moira controversy' ( it is more
of a personal vendetta ) is most welcome.

To my dismay, I found that the deeper I dig, the murkier it becomes!

The personal vendetta conducted by Matthew Mendes ( please note that I did not
use the Prof. designation since he has no right to it, being only a 'mistry' )
and his wife, Jennifer Mendes, against Manuel Caldeira, is aided and abetted
by none other than a certain politician from Saligao!

The husband and wife "Moira Mafia" have been lodging a continuous string of
complains to all and sundry, from the Village Sarpanch (who is Jennifer's
personal friend) to the Police Dept., Health Dept., Electricity Dept., PWD,
Sales Tax Dept., Handicrafts Dept., Pollution Control Board and even the
Income Tax Dept., alleging a string of irregularities, from illegal
construction, to water pollution, illegal use of power and water, evasion of
sales tax and even illegal export of goods and evasion of income tax! My God,
not even the Prime Minister of India's relative would have dared to accomplish
such a handful of 'crimes', all at the same time!

Any intelligent man, especially a Moidekar who is super intelligent ( my
apologies to Floriano ), would know that a ceramic unit uses only wooden
molds, clay and glazing powder as raw materials. The finished product is then
baked in a gas-fired oven. So where is the scope for any type of pollution?
The other materials used are wooden frames & stands.

Ordinary carpentry machines are used for this purpose. So where is the scope
for noise pollution? Even an ordinary grinder used by grill makers causes more
noise!

These spurious complains have been entertained by the government departments
only because the Saligao politician has thrown his weight behind the Investment
Agent from Moira. The politician has invested heavily through her and I would
welcome a denial from him if Nazar da Silva would be good enough to forward
this email to him.

People who play with fire are bound to get their fingers burnt, and the
Mendes' complaint to the Income Tax Dept. seems to have backfired. They were
so incensed for being sent on a wild goose chase that they have initiated
investigations on Jennifer Mendes' income tax assessment! Her earnings are
reported to be in the 5 lakhs region and the IT Dept. are ascertaining if she
has paid appropriate taxes.

The pity of it all is that this personal vendetta is depriving 30 - 40
villagers from earning their livelihood at Manuel Caldeira's production
unit. I hope Vivian makes it a point to talk to them, too.

It is to Manuel Caldeira's credit that he has not responded in kind to all
this harassment which is costing him dearly, but this Christian attitude has
encouraged the Mendes' to carry on their vendetta relentlessly. Here's hoping
that other "Returnees" will stand up and be counted.

Mario,

Gilbert has either problem understanding what he reads or gets keyed-up when he
finds two Goan names in a single post. The book review of Holy Warriors is by

which I forwarded. Here is the link to the archives:

He somehow thinks that by using tired clichés such as "In keeping with Goan

cheap shots to claw his way into cyberspace.

[Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: HELEN: The Life and Times of an H-Bomb

2006-04-23 Thread Bosco D'Mello
HELEN: The Life and Times of an H-Bomb

By Jerry Pinto

Review by: Kaveree Bamzai.

Writing a biography of a person who is either dead or does not cooperate is a
tricky task. But Jerry Pinto is nothing if not clever. He has done away with
the embarrassment of Helen Richarson Khan not answering his calls (as many as
100, over three years) by dispensing with the term biography altogether.

In the course of Helen: The Life and Times of an H-bomb, we find out almost as
much about the Franco-Burmese actor/dancer as we do about Pinto, who grew up
watching and loving Hindi movies in the seventies, even as the rest of the
middle-class was scoffing at its kitschy ways.

So far so goo. Pinto's work was always going to be difficult. Despite
Bollywood's venerable tradition of scandal-sheets, not much is known of
Helen's personal life-colourful though it appears to have been, with a long,
exploitative relationship with B-movie czar P.N. Arora followed by another,
more respectable, but equally controversial marriage to writer Salim Khan who
was already married. Pinto's book does not give us more information either on
these two relationships, or, except for a few details gleaned from a magazine
interview, anything about Helen's determined mother, Marlene, who would slap
her around in the hope that she would become a star. But that's not to say
that Pinto has not put in any effort. His appreciation of Helen's work turns
out to be an enourmous forensic exercise, involving the tracking down of at
least 450 of her self-proclaimed 1,000-odd movies, of which some are obscure,
while others are well-known. His reading of her performances is as
entertaining as it is indicative of a considerable depth of knowledge, which
takes the reader from a rumination on the significance of hotels in Hindi
cinema to the mostly ridiculous depiction of Christians.

Perhaps it is befitting that Hlen's repertoire from 'Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo'
in 'Howrah Bridge' (1958) to 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' in 'Sholay' (1975) said more
about the audience than it did about her. Pinto does manage to answer some
fundamental questions he sets himself - why she didn't go from bit-part to big
star, from C-list to A-list? Now, if only we knew why she stayed with Arora so
long, why she didn't have children, what she thinks of her many imitators, and
what was she thinking when she wore her typical workplace oufit - from high
Arabian fantasy to tribal in deepest, darkest Africa? Helen doesn't tell and
Pinto doesn't ask. We, the neo-readers fed on a constant diet of too much
information on two-bit stars, need to know. Especially when it is someone
we've elevated from a person to persona, item-girl to icon, outsider to
ultimate insider. Such women don't have a history, says a character played by
Helen of a suspected prostitute in Anamika (1973). Well, Helen certainly has
one. And it certainly deserves a more complete account. (ENDS)
