Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- With due consideration for the vast and multi-faceted erudition of Prof. Nandkumar Kamat, I must point out to a serious misrepresentation in the otherwise scholarly article of Prof. Kamat on Abbe Faria, appearing in The Navhind Times of 29th May last and in Goanet Digest, III, 547. The article refers to the father of the Abbe as one who, rather strangely, "had taken the vows of priesthood" and "left the religious duties" in order to get married to the woman who, two years later, would become the mother of the great Father of Hypnotism. Stranger still, Prof. Kamat says a little later that "they .separated after the birth of Jose Custodio" (the Abbe) and the father "became a priest again," thus implying that a Catholic priest took leave of his priesthood for the sake of a trial marriage and was all too easily re-admitted by the Church into the priesthood within a couple of years, when the marriage failed. If a situation as the one described above is far from imaginable today, much farther would it be two and a half centuries ago. For those interested, therefore, I give here the pertinent biographical details … and some additional ones. Caetano Vitorino de Faria was indeed studying to be a priest. But he left the seminary, admittedly even "after completing his theological education," as Kamat states, but certainly before he could receive the Sacred Orders, that is, before he could become a priest. His consequent marriage with Rosa Maria de Sousa lasted for at least six years, but ended in both of them agreeing to seek church dispensation in order to pursue a religious vocation. Thus Caetano became a priest and Rosa, a nun, with the father taking over the custody of the son, who in turn would also become a (very famous) priest. It is a lesser-known fact that both father and son were among the first priests from Goa to earn a doctorate in Theology, in Rome, the son going ahead to take yet another doctorate in Philosophy. Little known is also the fact that the son – who would later be known as Abbe Faria or Abbe de Faria – was personally invited by Pope Pius VI to preach on the Feast Day of the Holy Spirit, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, in the presence of the Pope. The year was 1780, the sermon was in Latin and brown-skinned Fr. Jose Custodio de Faria was only twenty four years of age! Of course, he would later preach also to the Queen of Portugal, teach Philosophy at the University of Paris and end up being acclaimed as the creator of hypnotism. Fr. J. Help others be BETTER INFORMED, The time is come for the people of Goa to ORGANISE not AGONISE !! -- - Rabies a major threat in Margao - Even as the South Goa administration has chalked out the course of action against the increasing number of dog bites the threat of rabies is looming large in parts of Salcete. Margao residents are agitated about the stray dogs running loose on the streets. The local self government authorities are yet to launch programmes to prevent dog bites. In every corner of the city one can see the dogs moving around in groups. These dogs can be seen near near the Colva bus stand, at Borda near multipurpose school, in the Gogal Housing board, at Fatorda, near stadium, near the new market complex and other places of prime importance. Several citizens have express concern over cases of dog bites and have urged the concerned authorities to initiate steps to prevent this menace. One doctor from Hospicio Hospital said that in last six months they had received and treated several dog bites cases. A parent, expressing anxiety over dog bite incidents, felt that school managements should write to the concerned authorities to take action against these stray dogs. She further added that the health authorities should make it a point to acquaint teachers and parents about the first aid to be administered in dog bite cases. Accidents have also risen due to stray dogs which roam around the roads, citizens pointed out. According to a veterinary doctor, the rise in dog bites cases is due to the behaviour of dogs during the mating season particularly from December to March and frequent man-dog contact. He added that once dogs are sterilized their level of aggression comes down. A doctor said that dog bite cases will reduce once the dog population is controlled. He added that people willing to vaccinate dogs should be allowed to do so and suggested that affected animals should be euthanased without violating the provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. - The Navhind Times 2/06/06 page 2 - - GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK -- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa - GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- _ Do not post admin requests to the list. However, Australia is not doing a favour since what they are doing is monetarily insignificant compared to the billions of dollars in oil and gas that they have been stealing from East Timor for decades now and continue to do so!!! Refs: http://www.etan.org/issues/tsea/plainfact.htm http://www.timorseajustice.org/ http://www.apheda.org.au/campaigns/east_timor_gas/news/1133485503_27547.html http://multinationalmonitor.org/mm2006/012006/scheiner.html The above documents describe how a huge and wealthy country like Australia is bullying and stealing the poorest and youngest country in Asia. It is shocking and people should be aware of the issues. Hardly anyone knows about this. East Timor is being bullied and the International Community is not doing anything about it. East Timor was forced to accept half when they should have had it all, and in some cases, East Timor is still not getting any revenue from oil and gas which can be found in 100% of her own territorial waters (Timor Gap). All this because the UN or International Law could not do anything in the short time to force Australia to stop the bullying and the stealing. This is shameful on the part of Australia. Disgusting really. After all, this is the poorest and the youngest country in Asia being bullied by the giant and wealthy Australia. What is also deplorable is the open criticism of the democratically elected East Timor Government by the Australian PM and by East Timor's First Lady (Xanana Gusmao's wife) who is also an Australian citizen. In my opinion, foreign governments should not criticise other legitimate and democratically elected governments, especially when there is a clear dispute in place. It is obvious that Australia would benefit even more if East Timor is proven to be unable to govern herself. For this reason, there are indeed rumours that the rebels have been trained and are receiving support from Australia. As you must know, the leader of the rebels, Major Alfredo Reinado, has been trained in Australia and has lived in Australia for many years. It is important that the international community is aware of the issues in East Timor. After all, they share a common history with Goa and East Timor (as well as Macau) was under the jurisdiction of the Goan Courts "Tribunal da Relacao de Goa" before 1961. Five or six hundred years ago, some of my forbears were islamicized North African Berbers (al Gharb, al Andalus), some were western Jews (Sefarad), some were christian Barbarians, and so on and so forth. Than the melting pot set sail east and west to make the planet one (oneness, you may recognize the concept) and become global. Global, period. I am the free sibling of that global tribe, where ethnic bias, hard feelings or hatred have no abode. I can play with and enjoy as many aliases as I feel like. I am at home. You, yourself, I guess, before being a mixed up Cornel, were probably, in a row, over the last few thousand years, a devious Cornélio de Jesus, a faithful Abu Khan, a devout Krishna, a holy Siddhartha, a pure Mahavir. Unfortunately you do not consider it to be a stream of enrichment and enlightment but rather an embarrassing source of unease and soul searching conflict. Bhai NRI cum aspiring Goenkar if you can't encompass them all go back to just one of your forsaken selves and be happy. You can, if you just want. It is not forbidden. First ever public show in GOA of DVC 10am today at Inox (02/06/06) Some highlights: - There were 4 policemen seen at the Inox. However, there were no police before the start of second show i.e. 12.50pm. - There were about 100 people in the audience. The figure is quite good, given just about 2 hours notice (people only come to know when they opened morning newspapers) Mostly seen even less than 50 people during Bollywood movies etc at the morning shows. Many Christian seen inside, there was a family of 4 just in front of us. 4 European tourist also seen. - The movie is about 2hrs duration. - First one hour there is nothing about the so called 'controversy' - Movie is all about codes, scrambles, etc - French & Italian language also spoken (with English translation/subtitles). - Holy Grail, tomb, Prairie or priory, code etc are the words often used. - Prairie/priory could be a sort of a religious sect or a body or a committee - The 'last super' portrait, the cup (wine) is missing. - Draw two triangles one on one- one pointing upward (male) and the other one downward (female) so that it appears like a 6 corner star. Its the symbol of male & female - The code revealed is 'APPLE' ( HIGHLIGHTS (fictional) CONTINUE BELOW, AFTER THE WARNING LINE) At the exit door, TV crew Live365 seen interviewing those who already watched the show. Some one in the background shouted loudly ' Big Cry and no Wolf' Now, you may wish to ask me if I would watch the movie if there was no much hue and cry about the movies in the press etc My Ans: Never! I only watched it as a matter of curiosity. I usually prefer Horror & Adventure. 'The controversial film "The Da Vinci Code" whose release was opposed by Christians groups, has netted Rs. three crores in its opening weekend in India' (GT) Note: The subject line 'The mind only sees..' also taken from the movie. FOLLOWING FICTIONAL OR CONTROVERSIAL INFORMATION NARRATED BY A OLDER MAN TO THE LEAD ROLES IN THE MOVIE you may press 'delete' or look away now.. - Maria Magdalen married to Jesus. - Jesus loved Maria Magdalen more than anybody else. - Maria Magdalen was pregnant at the time of Jesus Crucifixion - She then fled to France. - Did she really gave birth to Jesus Child ? yes. - Any surviving or living bloodline of Jesus ? Yes, The heroine herself and there is another one you will have to watch it yourself to find out. - There was a mention of Gospel of Filip and Maria Magdalene [EMAIL PROTECTED] for Goa & NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ Konkani Songs, Goan Photos, Tiatr/Film VCDs, Bank interest rates etc etc (for updates etc click below) http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/files/ ___ The all-new Yahoo! Mike Allen, chief of staff for Navy Region Southwest in San Diego, to all of his colleagues in the Navy and Marines, and to U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, the only logical place to develop a new civilian airport to serve San Diego County is at Miramar, and this can be done with minimal impact upon essential military operations in this area. First, a reminder to Mr. Hunter, that he was elected to serve the interests of all of the people in his district, and that attaching a provision to a defense spending bill that would block the use of any area bases for development of an airport is clearly against the interests of San Diego residents. Capt. Allen says that Miramar is essential to the training of new pilots, yet in his same remarks to the airport advisory panel, he talked about pilot training programs that are conducted at nearby North Island Naval Air Base and Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Surely it would be better for all concerned if pilot training programs could be combined at those two facilities. If Capt. Allen and his Navy and Marine colleagues would only get out of their traditional defensive posture, a position they assume whenever the subject of potential base closures is aired, they would see the substantial cost savings that could be realized by concentrating their operations at North Island and Camp Pendleton. If they handle things right, I'm sure Mr. Hunter and his colleagues in Congress could arrange it so that the expenses incurred in moving from Miramar to North Island and Camp Pendleton would not become Navy or Marine expenses, but be considered part of the overall costs of building a new civilian airport for San Diego County. And if they require a new runway at Camp Pendleton, I'm sure that could be included too! With Lindbergh Field being already so overcrowded, and projections for the future being even more so, it is time for all San Diegans to start working together to get this job done as soon as possible. And by all San Diegans I mean civilians and military personnel, Congress and the military brass. If we can show that we are united in this endeavor, then we can more forcefully request the help of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, President George W. Bush and Congress to help us get this imperative new airport moving forward. Similarities between Miramar/Pendleton-N.Island and Dabolim/Seabird, right? Cheers. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Goanet mailing list (Goanet@goanet.org)

[Goanet] In small Goa, big developmental projects constantly attract local protests

Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- In small Goa, big developmental projects constantly attract local protests By Pamela D'Mello Panaji, Goa: A series of high profile projects flagged by the Goa government have run into trouble with local protestors --- largely over perenially-contentious land acquisitions. The latest in a line of projects to hit a road block is a long pending tourism industry effort to lay out an 18-hole international standard golf course. While the government-private joint venture identified land on a sprawling sea face hilltop in south Goa, the areas's local MLA has stated that villagers were opposed to giving up the 10,000 sq m required. Negotiations are still on to clear the green for the golf course, projected as necessary to scale up Goa's tourism market to high spending business and leisure travellers. Days earlier chief minister Pratapsing Rane dismissed statements from regional opposition parties, who said the government's project for a North-South six lane expressway would leave many homeless. He said road mapping authorities had taken care to ensure the trajectory would affect minimum houses. Critics though point out that the parallel highway, initially conceieved to complement a new airport, was superflous since the airport itself is now temporarily on hold. The state's critical rural landscape would be affected by the 90 metre wide tarmac ribbon, losing farm space to bitumen, they say. One regional party has threatened to campaign against the expressway, even as the administration indicated it was going ahead with ground pegging exercises. Another mega project to situate an information technology park in a suburban village plateau has met with protest, since the site includes green patches which attract birds and birdwatchers. Big developmental projects constantly attract local protest, since scenic placid self contained villages react to ceding public and private farm and and green areas to urbanisation and commercial activity, Rumblings had initially greeted a IT habitat project laid out in the upmarket Dona Paula residential area, home to the state's whose who. The project inauguration however went through, earlier this year. Projects for a cricket stadium had to be shifted while contentious centralised garbage dump sites were abandoned following protests. In the political race to demonstrate development milestones before an upcoming election, the Congress party sees itself as a victim, paying the price for being more democratic and therefore a soft target for protestors. "Activists only come out of the woodwork when the Congress is in power" says Congress MLA Jeetendra Deshprabhu, referring to the calm that previous regimes enjoyed.
