Goan Folk Music and Dance

The Indian and Foreign tourist is interested in knowing about Goan culture and

In his welcome address the Principal expressed the need to expose our students
to our rich cultural heritage in order to develop love for folk music and folk

migrtate and have nothing to call their own in a foreign land and find solace
in Goan culture which reminds them constantly of their roots.

In the first session, Mr. Kanta Gaude brought out the inherent presence of
music in the breeze, the trees and in the people of Goa. The different forms
of folk music were explained. The only Goan instrument Ghumot and its
significance in Goan music was explained. Mr. Gaude also highlighted the
prospects of being a folk artist as a career option.

In the second session 2 folk dances were presented to the students, the Dhalo-
Fugddi and Kazaracho Nach. The 12 dancers were beautifully dressed in their
traditional wear giving students a first hand experience of the costumes,
jewellery etc. After the performance, College students were trained in dancing
the Dalo-Fugddi, Zagor and Kazaracho Nach. With efforts and rigourous practice
the College students hope to be able to perform these dances in the near
future and thus strengthen and promote Goan Folk Culture.

CHILD RIGHTS DAY CELEBRATIONS AT ST. XAVIER’S

A REPORT

On the occasion of the Child Rights Day, the Child Labour Cell organized
recently an informal programme for child workers from the Mapusa Market. The
children were collected from their open school and some were brought from the
market place. Altogether 27 children came to the College by the forty years
old College bus, which did an additional duty of providing a joy ride to the
children.

Soon after arrival, lunch was promptly served which was relished. The post-
lunch session was filled with excitement for the children. Different games
were played with forfeits and prizes for the winners. They were asked to sing
songs of their choice, which included some in their own mother tongues, which
they did with a lot of enjoyment. After an exciting games session, a drawing
competition was held. The kids could draw anything they pleased. The results
were surprisingly very good; there were houses, kids, fountains and parks.
They were given prizes for the best drawings.

The day ended with the children leaving for their homes in the College bus,
taking with them small takeaways of biscuits and chocolate bars.

[Goanet]Talking Movies At Xavier's

Talking Movies At Xavier's

While the fever of the International Film Festival of India began to subside in
Panaji, the Film Club of St. Xavier's College, Mapusa generated its own heat
during a three-day festival of "Films with a difference", the club comprising
of students interested in theatre as well as films and media, invited Ms.
Gayathri Konkar of `Moving Images' to screen and conduct discussions on a
selection of special films on the 14th, 15th and 16th of December, 04.

The festival coincided with the three-day Fete commemorating the closing of the
College Ruby Jubilee Year. 'The Colour of Paradise' is a multiple award
winning film by the Iranian director Majid Majidi. The story of the young
blind boy Mohammed and his innocent quest for love and acceptance in
the 'normal' world around him, moved the audience to silent tears. Majidi's
fine handling of the simple story-line, combined with breathtaking
cinematography, was a celebration not only of the rare natural beauty of Iran,
but also of the 'other kind' of film.

Director Antonio Pedro Vasconcelos', Cannes, Best Debut award-winning feature
film 'Jaime' was a stark exposé of the dark world of the poor and unemployed
youth of Portugal Vasconcelo handles this universal theme with a moving yet
unpretentious honesty, portraying the plight of the eponymous hero with a
sensitivity rarely seen in most contemporary mainstream films.

The screening of Alan Parker's gripping American Civil rights era
film, 'Mississippi Burning' starring, Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, served as
an appropriate sounding board for generating a healthy discussion on the
differences between Art films and mainstream 'flicks'. The general observation
was that the latter category tended to depend largely on powerful background
scores and the rapid shifting of scenes to hold audience attention, while the
former moved at a more deliberate pace, dwelling on subtle details, using
natural sound effects to cater to the taste of a more focused and perhaps
sensitive audience.

The French film 'The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulaine'and 'The Victor
Weeps' a powerful documentary on the plight of the Afghan refugee produced by
world class photographer Fazal Sheikh, provided that additional dimension to
the viewer’s perspective of the silver screen.

On the whole, the free screening of movies on campus and the interesting
discussions on themes, Cinematography, Art versus mainstream film etc. that
were generated after each screening, was a truly enriching learning experience.

"We were fortunate to be given the opportunity to watch and appreciate such
interesting and inspiring films at no cost" and "...even though the films were
in different languages, we didn’t mind reading the subtitles because they all
tell a unique story" said one of the students, echoing the general feeling
after the festival. It is interesting to note that in addition to being one of
the few colleges in Goa to have a Theatre Club, St. Xavier's is now perhaps the
only colleges to have successfully hosted their own film festival.

The students are already looking forward to the next St. Xavier's "Film
Festival With A Difference" which is set to run for a longer duration and
showcase a wider variety of films.

The festival was coordinated by Ms. Alice D'Cruz, the Head of the Department
of English.

[Goanet]TOWARDS A NEW SOCIETY

2005-04-28 Thread St. Xavier's College of Arts, Science & Commerce - Mapusa -
TOWARDS A NEW SOCIETY

"Education should lead students to critical thinking and acquisition
of values" - said Fr. Felix Koikara, delivering the keynote address at
the three day Faculty Enrichment Programme at St. Xavier's College,
Mapusa, held recently, with the them "Towards a New Society". Mr.
Lucindo Faria, the Managing Director of Lagoa Azul Resort and alumnus
of the College, presided as the Chief Guest.

The Principal, Prof. Newman Fernandes welcomed and introduced the
Chief Guest and the resource person - Fr. Felix Koikara. He stressed
that each one of us is a component of the society and change has to
begin with oneself, which can bring about a wholesome change in the
society. The Chief Guest recollected his nostalgic memories of College
life and said that what students remember of teachers, is not what
they taught as subject teachers but their personality and character.
The resource person, Fr. Felix Koikara, in his keynote address,
stressed that Man is a Mystery and to say that one is expert at any
subject concerning human beings, is indeed foolish. He said that the
programme schedule would focus on 3 ideas - acquisition of knowledge,
acquisition of skills and building new attitudes. He also highlighted
that teachers are facilitators in inculcating values in students.

The session began with the reflection exercise wherein teachers were
given a questionnaire which provided an opportunity for short
reflection on one's own values and ideas about value education. The
questionnaire also focused on the role of teachers in imparting values
and the need for a clear value system for students. The next session
saw the introduction of the personal and professional value housie
game card. Each teacher was given one value for self and a game card
containing 24 professional and personal values. Each teacher had to
ask the other teachers with different values to sign in the respective
box on the game card. The session was interesting and interactive and
was enjoyed by all the participants. The teachers were further asked
to identify 10 values from the 24 values on the game card which they
considered the most important and rank them on a scale from 1 to 5.
The participants were then asked to give reasons for the choice of the
first three important values.

The teachers were divided into groups of 8 to 9 members and each group
was asked to draw a profile of a true professional teacher. The
profile made by each group was integrated to have a consensus. The
following was the value consensus profile: Belief in God, Character,
Self confidence, Love, Dynamism, Cooperation, Justice, Knowledge,
Hardwork and Honesty. Each teacher made a self evaluation with
respect to each of the 10 profile values on scale of 1 to 5, where 1
is weak and 5 is strong. Each teacher was made to identify their weak
points and strengthen them.

On the second day Fr. Felix Koikara discussed the value crisis faced
by the young generation during adolescence. He made a mention of how
media portrays a hypothetical world of infidelity and beauty which
leads them to choose undesirable values. He also stressed on the
teachers' role in promoting values among students and the various
alternative methods like trial and error, reward and punishment,
nagging and others were discussed. It was found that each method has
its own drawbacks. Hence value clarification approach gained
importance. He said that value is a stance that the self takes
to the total environment as expressed through its behaviour, ideas,
body, feelings and imagination. The process of valuing has 7 criteria
which can be divided into 3 categories - choosing, prizing and acting.

After the tea break the participants were given a simple appreciation
exercise titled "The Gift You Are". Each teacher was made to describe
5 most important characteristics, behaviours and attitudes that their
friends and peers would judge were the guiding principles of their
lives and from which they drew inspiration and would strive to
emulate. The teacher was also asked to identify the underlying
values. This exercise stressed that we need to take time to
appreciate ourselves and only then can we learn to appreciate others.
The afternoon session dealt with an introspective exercise on social
justice. This questionnaire highlighted the many evils in society
that create gender bias and discrimination. The resource person
stressed on the need to be aware of our rights and to be actively
involved in preserving them and fighting against the violations. This
was followed by another session on 'marriage and the choice of an
ideal life partner'. The main objective of this exercise was to
decide on the qualities of an ideal life partner (spouse) and to
reflect on the qualities the spouse expects from me.

ARENA 2005-06 at Xavier's

ARENA 2005-06, an inter-college competition, was organized on the 9th and 10th
of January, 2006, with the theme – "What you do is what defines you", by the
Department of Commerce, St. Xavier's College, Mapusa.

The event, mainly commerce-based, aimed at acquainting students of various
colleges with the competitive business world, that awaits them beyond the
college doors.

On day1, the inaugural was kicked off with a prayer dance by Ms. Vimal
Nagvekar to invoke the blessings of the Almighty.

In his opening address, the Principal, Prof. Newman Fernandes asserted that
participation in such events is necessary to prepare students for stressful
real-life situations and to help them adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
This is a contribution of the College for the enrichment of the curriculum -
he added.

The Chief Guest, Mr. K.D. Bhatt, Managing Director of Konika Laboratories,
emphasized that India has the potential to become an economic superpower, if
only we had more educated manpower and students with a more aggressive
business attitude.

The first event was a mock CAT exam for the aspiring participants of Tycoon-
Numero Uno. This was followed by 'Nouvelle Aventure', where participants had
to prepare a project report for a new undertaking. Inspite of the lack of
experience of students in this field, most colleges did a commendable job,
though they received inputs form the judges. This event was won by Damodar
College, Margao.

Save Our Souls the second round of Tycoon-Numero Uno, the next event. Each
participant was given a controversial personality and had to battle it
out with the others to prove their worth. The audience truly had their fill!

The final event for the day was 'Coat of Arms', where colleges presented
painstakingly made thermocol cut-outs, business cards and letterheads for
`Nihal Apparels’, an industrial uniform manufacturer. The first place bagged
by MES College, Vasco.

The battle resumed at the Arena on day2, with the event management
competition - 'WIZCRAFT'. Each college had to prepare an advertisement
campaign for a company. The judges were hard to please. Nevertheless, all
teams put in a lot of efforts and came up with good presentations. In the end,
Fr. Agnel College, Pilar, proved too good and they walked away with the first
place.

ARENA came to a boil with 'Third Degree', the final round of Tycoon-Numero
Uno. Participants were grilled to a golden brown by an unforgiving
panel of judges. It was truly an audience event with maximum attendance in a
jam-packed hall. Ms. Mrunalini Hawaldar of Damodar College, Margao was
awarded 'Tycoon-Numero Uno'.

At the closing function, the Chief Guest, Mr. B. Ramesh, the Head of Commerce
Department at Goa University said the event was organized professionally and
thoroughly and it was an opportunity for students to practically experience
the real world.

Prof. Newman Fernandes based his speech on the theme: what does it profit a
person if he has all the bookish knowledge, but cannot speak two words in
public?

ARENA 2005-06, ended off with the Event Coordinator Mr. Carmelito De Souza
proposing the vote of thanks followed by the singing of the College Anthem.

XAVIER’S NEWS & FEATURES E-SERVICE (XNFES): Emotions & their Expression

The Child Labor Eradication Cell of the College in association with Contact
Base, a Non-Government Organization (NGO) from Kolkata, organized a 5-day
workshop on Communication Skills on the College Campus. The workshop commenced
on the 16th of January 2006, and it was conducted from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

On the first day the students were introduced to the resource persons, the
organization they belong to, and the objective of the workshop. They played
four games to improve concentration and coordination of mind and body
movements. They were also taught to exercise the facial muscles while
expressing various emotions such as anger, surprise, fear, etc. This was done
with appropriate modulation of voice. The students were then divided into four
groups and each group was given an emotion which they had to express through a
small skit. The day’s session went well with the students, who did not wish to
miss the next day.

On the second day there were a couple of games on concentration and team work.
Following this there was a brain storming session to decide on a topic of work
on improving the skills of the participants. The participants chose to work on
pedophilia. The session ended with a discussion with the participants on what
the presentation should include and the roles they would like to play.

The third party commenced with a session on meditation and concentration. A
skit depicting three scenes from the everyday life in a proactive state of Goa
was set and enacted. As decided earlier the skit was to be presented at
the flag hoisting ceremony on the 26th of January. The stage was set with role
allotment.

The fourth day began with a brief enactment of the skit and necessary changes
were made after listening to suggestions made by the participants. The
dialogues for the different roles were written. Some of the actors opted to
work on the spot rather than stick to any specific dialogue.

On the concluding day – 21st January – the participants concentrated on honing
their skills as actors. At the end of the day’s session, the participants were
asked for a feedback, on what they had learnt and what other skills they
needed.

located on the northern borders of Assagao, belonging to the Communidade of
Assagao. The programme was taken up as part of the "Adoption of Assagao

The spring was covered with thick shrubs and bushy trees thus rendering the
access to the spring impossible. This spring is around 500 years old, but has
not been taken note of, since there is no clear road leading to the site.

Soon after flag-hoisting function in the College the students went about with
the job beginning at 10.00 a.m. The task was arduous, however it was completed
by evening at 6.00 p.m.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY AT XAVIER’S

“All our students and in a special way Psychology students are the
ambassadors for the promotion of mental health among our people” – said
Prof. Newman Fernandes, Principal of St. Xavier’s College during a
programme organized to celebrate World Mental Health Day.

The Post-graduate Department of Psychology of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa
coordinated the World Mental Health day programme in collaboration with the
Goa Psychology Association on October 10th, 2005. at St. Xavier's College.

Prof. Fernandes who is also the Head of Department of Psychology,
highlighted the need for mental health awareness at all levels. In his
address he asked students and faculty members present to think about mental
health in terms of four aspects: education of people at large about the
concept of mental health, preventive steps in relation to mental health,
taking care of the mentally ill people and the status of institutions that
care for such people. He elaborated by stating that there is lack of
trained professionals in this field and therefore we need to think
seriously about opting for this profession. He urged the students to spread
the message of mental health awareness and the various aspects of mental
health, among the people with whom they come in contact.

A 24-hour help line was also inaugurated for the benefit of all people who
require such help and guidance. The helpline is a 24 hour service and
counselors can be contacted at 9850723787.

The students of the Post-graduate Department of Psychology presented a
“role play” exercise lasting for around thirty minutes, depicting various
types of behavioural problems and guidance for treatment.

2005-12-18 Thread St. Xavier's College of Arts, Science & Commerce - Mapusa -
The Masque

St. Xavier's College does it again !! In keeping with tradition,
the 'Theatre Club' of the College raised yet another toast to theatre by
organizing a three-day festival of drama. 'The Masque' was held from 28th
to 30th November 2005.

The Chief Guest of the inaugural function, Fr. Savio Rodrigues, s.j. spoke
animatedly of the tremendous scope and the importance of theatre in life. He
urged the young students to use theatre as a means of self expression and as a
tool to bring about social change. He spoke of the need to raise the
standards of English theatre in Goa through more enthusiastic participation at
college level.

This year the festival was thrown open to all Higher Secondary Schools and
colleges in Goa. Not withstanding the fact that November turned out to be
a very busy time for all students and participation could have been more
encouraging, the festival was a success.

Besides being an opportunity to show-case ones talents on stage, The masque
was a wonderful learning experience for the young theatre enthusiasts. An
interesting twist came from the valuable feedback and constructive criticism
provided by the judges, Fr. Savio Rodrigues, R.J. Caji Vaz, Ms. Yvonne Nunes
and Mrs. Bevinda Collaco after every item. The frank suggestions were well
taken and the final day saw some commendable performances by the Xavierites.
Mr. Alfvold Silveira, popular R.J. and a playwright and director himself,
conducted a workshop on the various facets of stage acting. He took the
students through various group activities to bring out their otherwise dormant
potential.

The valedictory function was presided over by Mr. Alfvold Silveira. The
function ended with the prize distribution and some rib-tickling comedies
by the hosts through a mime, a monologue and a One-Act-Play. These
presentations bythe Theatre Club of Xaviers had the audience in splits.

While DMC Mapusa emerged as the overall winners and the College of home
Science as runners up, Ms. Delilah Alvares of Home Science was awarded the
prize for the Best Actress.

The Principal of St. Xavier's College, Prof. Newman Fernandes in his address,
appreciated the efforts of the Staff and members of the Club in promoting the
cause of English theatre in the State.

COMMUNICATING WITH CHILDREN

"There are no difficult children, but only children in difficult
circumstances, who need help and care to overcome their circumstances"-
said Dr. Nandita D'Souza addressing the students of the Post Graduate
Department of Psychology of St. Xavier's College, Goa, on the
topic "Communicating with children" on September 28, 2005.

Dr. D'Souza is a pediatrician who has been working exclusively in the area
of child and family mental health for the past twelve years. She has
pioneered the concept of child development and family guidance cells in
Goa, having set up the Sangath Centre. Dr. Nandita has now set up a new
centre "Sethu", a centre for child and family guidance.

Dr. Nandita believes that parents and teachers can be empowered with skills
to do their best for children. She discussed various fears, which the child
experiences due to which they refuse to visit a counsellor. She elaborated
on the ways in which the counsellors can develop a good rapport with the
child. She said that the session should be more like a conversation rather
than an interrogation session. She asserted that the counsellor needs to
make the purpose and the duration of the meeting very clear. A "Thank you"
ends the session on a positive note.

Dr. D'Souza also provided guidelines about the environment that needs to be
maintained during the counselling. She stressed that recognizing the
feelings of the child and the use of descriptive praise helps the
counsellor to know the child better and put him/ her at ease. She believes
that one needs to be enthusiastic, quick and observant while dealing with
children.

She further explained about how to deal with adolescents in instances where
they fail to open up. In her opinion, the adolescent should be given time
to speak up and not force them to speak. The counsellor should reassure the
adolescent that perfect confidentiality would be maintained. She discussed
various difficulties that may be encountered in the process of counselling
adolescent, and also enlightened the audience on how to facilitate
communication between parents and the adolescent.

Suicide and Suicide Attempts

The number of Suicide cases in Goa is increasing at an astounding rate. To
understand the situation and the ramifications, the Post Graduate
Department of Psychology, St. Xavier’s College organized a programme on
17th September 2005. Dr. Ligia Cascabulho was the key speaker for the
programme.

Dr. Ligia Cascabulho is a Brazalian Psychologist residing in Goa and who
has a vast experience in projects concerned with Child Psychology and
Mental Disorders.

Dr. Ligia Cascabulho appreciated the willingness of the students and the
Department to freely and openly discuss the topic of suicide. She said that
the mindset of the person, the environment, family background,
unemployment, accumulation of losses, social and physical and cultural set
up – all this and other reasons can contribute to the tendency to commit
this horrible crime. She also said that people, who attempt to destroy
themselves, appear like mental patients, requiring psychiatric and/ or
psychological help.

She explained how suicide can be seen from different perspectives like:
altruistic/ heroic suicide, philosophical suicide, religious suicide,
romantic suicide, media influence and contagion suicide with relevant examples.

She stressed that as a professional, one should know about the causes of
the attempt, degree of suicidal intent, presence of mental illness, current
suicidal risk, previous suicide attempts, family and personal history,
social support available for the person, the person’s usual ability to cope
with stress, his/ her regulations of emotions and further management. She
emphasized the importance of follow- up for at least 12 months and the
creation of a support system for the person.

The talk was followed by an interactive question and answer session, in
which the students clarified their doubts and misconceptions about the
topic. The talk created an awareness about the various ways in which the
students can help people who are in distress and contemplate suicide.

American Students at Xavier's

Twenty one American students visited St. Xavier's College, Mapusa-Goa, on
the 29th Sept. 2005 and spent one day to familiarize themselves with the
educational activities in Goa. The students came to Goa as part of their
four months study visit to India. Most of them were reading for T.Y.B.A.
and some for S.Y.B.A. They arrived at 10.00 am on College Campus and were
welcomed warmly with traditional Aarti & Marigold Garlands. The programme
began with a prayer followed by a classical dance by Mallika Parsekar
(T.Y.B.A). The Principal, Prof Newman Fernandes welcomed each one of them.

A PowerPoint presentation on `St. Xavier's College' was made by Ms. Janet
D'Souza highlighting the Mission objectives, curricular and co curricular
activities and future plan of the institution. Each student spent 45
minutes in each of the 21 classrooms, wherein students of St. Xavier's
College interacted with the American guests on various issues like subjects
offered, facilities available, educational policies, cultural differences etc.

Thereafter Prof. Newman Fernandes addressed the visitors on the topic
"Globalization and its impact on Higher Education," in his chamber, which
was followed by a discussion. It was noticed that they were rating their
Universities lower than the ratings of the latest survey which indicated
that out of the twenty best universities in the world, seventeen were
located in U.S.A. They wanted to know how India would be one of the
superpowers in the world around 2050, with so much of poverty in Indian
villages.

After the talk, the Xavierian Choral Group entertained the guests with two
Konkani hymns and one in English. The American guests were fascinated with
the warm hospitality. They were surprised to know that the subject
combinations in Goa are very rigid and students are not allowed to offer
combinations like History & Biology or Religion and Economics as they are
doing in U.S.A. In one sentence, they said that the visit was a memorable
and a fruitful one.

The entire programme was co-coordinated by Ms. Janet D'Souza, Convenor of
the Xavier's Student Exchange Programme.

The first application for obtaining license for setting up the
Community Radio Station (FM) was sent to the Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting on 7th August, 2003. However, there was no response.

The College approached Mr.. Eduardo Faleiro, the then Goa member of Rajya
Sabha, Mr. M.V.Kamath, Chairman, Prasar Bharati, Dr. Mani Jacob,
Secretary, AIACHE, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resources Development and
Mr. Frederick Noronha, Journalist and Community Radio supporter.

The issue of Community Radio was raised in Lok Sabha in December 20, 2003
and the concerned Minister stated that the Government had received 39
applications but no clearances were given. One of the questions on CR was
asked by Mr. Eduardo Faleiro in Rajya Sabha.

The name of St. Xavier’s College did not figure among these 39
applications. The list included the following applications : Andhra
Pradesh (2), Bihar (1), Delhi (3), Gujarat (1), Jammu & Kashmir (2),
Karnataka (2), Kerala (1), Maharashtra (5), Nagaland (1), Orissa (1),
Pondicherry (2), Punjab (1), Rajasthan (4), Tamilnadu (6), Uttar Pradesh
(6) and Uttaranchal (1). The list included 5 universities, 15 colleges,
one IIT, 5 schools and 13 other institutions.

Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Information and Broadcasting
told Rajya Sabha on December 22, 2003 ,that 4 organizations including
Jammu University and Kashmir University were found ineligible for grant
of licence as per the laid down guidelines. The minister also ruled out
any review of the policy despite limited response to the Community radio
scheme which former I & B minister Sushma Swaraj had said would
“revolutionise” radio broadcast in the country.

The Government decided to allow educational institutions to operate
their own radio stations. According to Mr. Alokesh Gupta, CR enthusiast,
“the announcement of the Government was to have seen 1000 radio stations
by December, 2003. Instead administrative wrangling came in the way of
implementing the project as colleges spent time running around for
licenses and approval from four ministries – Home Affairs, Communications
& Information & Broadcasting – as they took their time processing
applications”.

The University of Pune had also applied for CR station but its name did
not figure among the 39 institutions. On May 31, 2004, the Ministry of
Information & Broadcasting informed that it had not received our
application even though we sent the signed receipt obtained by courier
services. The second application was the second routed through the
Ministry of Human Resource Development which was very quick in NOC. One
copy was sent to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. This
strategy yielded results.

On February 2, 2004, Anna University unveiled Prime Minister
A.B.Vajpayee’s gift to Chennai – the country’s first campus radio
station. The Indian Express headlines screamed : “In Amma land, BJG tunes
in”. According to the report the U

Orchids and Anthuriums have a good potential in Goa, which can be tapped
not only as a hobby, but also provide an opportunity for
self-employment. Besides, they require easy handling, have a long
table life of 15-20 days and remain fresh on the plant for not less than
a month.
