[Goanet] GIVING BACK TO GOA AND GOANS

2006-08-19 Thread George Pinto
Value education and teaching. Nice submission for the GOAN SENIORS E-book.
George

GIVING BACK TO GOA AND GOANS
By Mrs. Electra M. Karandikar

Way back in my childhood the role model I looked upon was my mother. She had
started an English
school during Portuguese times extending help to those parents who wanted their
wards to learn
English. I could see the outpouring of gratitude of these people who wanted an
English education.

I learnt that progress meant intellectual prosperity and success the outcome of
one’s role in
society. The role one plays for the betterment in each other’s lives. So the
opportunity to
contribute towards this end resulted in my becoming a teacher too.

When I joined the teaching profession, I looked at it as a vocation and not as
a job. Teaching for
me seemed like a noble service rendered to the young who adore you with
unblinking love and never
question your judgement. Considering this, I felt that I had to learn more to
share with my
students and therefore, I did my B.Ed and M. Ed after marriage. The teaching
profession made me
realize that I was dealing with live clay where I could mould the young into
personalities of
acumen, diligence and reservoirs of knowledge.

I taught in a rural school, Geography being my favourite subject I took my
students through
journeys of varied lands, helping them build mental maps and wherever possible
using all media and
materials to help them comprehend different cultures, people and their
heritage. At every juncture
I tried to imbibe in them values of tolerance, sensitiveness to the physically
challenged, the
very young and the very old and raising awareness of their precious
surroundings. All this was
done not only in the classroom but outdoors too when such a method was not used
by schools in days
gone by.

Building a rapport with my students was my primary aim so that I could gain
their confidence to
build up their strengths, so in order to this I visited their homes after
school hours to get
acquainted with their parents and their background. This exercise helped me to
know the loopholes
so that I could plug them with understanding, attention and love.

This also threw light on the human conflict, their woes, misery, difficulties
and ignorance in
these people’s lives. I tried to reach out in whatever way I could, but most of
all today I see
the products of that period, enriched, doing well and happy. The culmination of
all this was the
Teachers’ Award I received in 1996 from the Goa government.

Having retired after thirty-four years of service as a teacher, and 25 years as
a Resource Person
I am still actively involved eight years later as a Key Resource person,
lecturer, Counsellor at
IGNOU and as an advisor to teacher-trainees fulfilling my motto of giving back
to Goa and Goans.
This is what I always dreamt of and that was, to make our younger generation
the pillars of an
International society.

I have been on the Advisory Committee of the State Institute of Education and
The Nirmala
Institute of Education. I have also been a Paper Setter and Chief Moderator at
the Goa Board.
Having authored eighteen books on education during the span of my teaching
career it has given me
an opportunity for what more I could do. On behalf of the Government of Goa I
have co-authored
text books in English from standards IV to VII and Geography from V to VII some
of which are
currently being used. On behalf of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, New
Delhi I have
contributed to writing the Teacher’s Manual on Environmental Education for
DIET, Goa.

I am invited to train teachers right from school to College level in the
various Training Colleges
of Goa, besides other bodies like the School Super Complexes, the Goa Chamber
of Commerce &
Industry, The Navodaya Training Institute, etc. I lecture on Value education,
Environmental
education, Leadership Development, Evaluation Techniques, Methodology in
education, etc. These
encounters have taken me through the entire state of Goa.

The interaction with in-service and pre-service teachers has definitely
enriched the teacher cycle
from teacher to taught. This enrichment re-vibrates when in turn I see teachers
whom I have
trained as Resource persons delivering their goods for the betterment of the
community.

The satisfaction at the end of a workshop, the beautiful smiles, the
acknowledgement and my deep
feeling of having shared my knowledge, thoughts, ideas, ideals with the next
generation teachers
is what I call GIVING BACK!

Re: [Goanet] The Goan child and childhood

2006-08-19 Thread Frederick \"FN\" Noronha
And while on the subject, let me sing a song of praise to our own
pediatrician in Goa, Dr Lilly Sequeira-Sukhija (some may know her as
the daughter of the late Jack de Sequeira, and wife of Mr Sukhija who
runs the Panjim Inn, if I got my names right).

Not for nothing is she popular among so many parents in Goa. She has
brought up a generation of kids (as has Dr O Nazareth in Mapusa,
another well-appreciated doctor.)

Dr Lilly talks to young mothers as if she was their mother-in-law. In
a very firm but friendly manner. "You're mad or what?" she would
sometimes ask an overly-worried mother, in a simultaneously familar
and friendly manner, immediately putting her fears to rest, when a
child is struck by a routine monsoonal or change-of-weather ailment.
She's the last one to push that does of now-fashionable antibiotics or
unnecessary vaccines on her young patients. Before prescribing
medicines, she first asks the parents what they have with them at
home. This is strange, at a time when a growing number of doctors seem
to want to ensure that the pharma business keeps in business. Doing
good business.

Talking about paediatricians, our own Dr Jose Colaco is there. But one
has never had the chance to consult him, since he is sitting half-way
around the world. Or maybe, I am. --FN

Re: [Goanet] Goans and the Parsi Community/response Roland

2006-08-19 Thread Carvalho

Dear Roland & Mervyn,

In this connection I also want to say that strong
bonds between the Parsi and Goan also existed in the
Gulf. Whether these were carried on from those that
existed in Bombay, or whether the Parsi felt a natural
inclination to bond with another diasporic figure, I
do not know. Parsi bosses almost invariably had a
fondness for that very quintessence of Goan
professionalism in the Gulf, the Goan secretary.

2006-08-19 Thread Carvalho
Dear Frederick,

You may be surprised how many silent women readers
there are on the net that don't feel inclined to post.
One issue maybe the testosterone-fueled subject range
may not hold interest for women. To that end I am
trying to write on some subjects that may interest
women and hopefully bring them out of hiding. The
other reason is, for anyone to survive on forums, one
has to be as tough as nails and many women shy away
from wanting to swim with the sharks.

[Goanet] Book Review "Penance": A novel by Ben Antao

2006-08-19 Thread Silviano Barbosa
Book Review by By Silviano C. Barbosa, author of the novel, “The Sixth
Night”

August 19, 2006

Novel, “Penance” by Ben Antao
Publisher Goan Observer, Goa, India
Soft cover, 329 Pages

I have just finished reading the Canadian novel, “Penance” by Canadian Goan
author Ben Antao and published by Goan Observer, Panjim, Goa, India.

It’s too bad the North American publishers still shy away from Goan novels
and novelists. I am sure if Rohinton Mistry had submitted this novel to
Alfred Knopf or any other big name publishers, it would have been published.
But Rohinton has not yet published any Canadian based novel so far, a fact
not ignored by his Canadian critics.

Author Ben Antao has succeeded in his first foray into a mainstream Canadian
novel. The fact that Ben has based this novel on a more than familiar
Catholic way of life and the fact that he is married to his Canadian born
wife and also the fact that he worked as a professional high school teacher
in Toronto, has all worked very well for him in his portrayal of the
Canadian Catholic teachers’ intricate way of life in this Canadian novel. As
a result the ethnic novelist leaves no stone unturned in making it a full
fledged Canadian novel, and not an ethnic one.

This novel is well written with some lively scenes, flashbacks, monologues,
a keen human observation and a precise narrative. The book has been well
edited. The novel is just about 60,000 words, a little too short for a full
fledged novel, and the reader ends up wanting for more. But the author makes
up for this by using double line spacing, which makes the book much easier
and faster to read and also makes it 329 pages long.

The first part of the novel follows the pattern indicated on the book’s
blurb, as the author uncovers the background of his characters with his
typical show-and-tell craft, which most modern novelists adhere to. The
second part is lot more interesting and as the novel comes almost to an
unexpected end, it holds the reader’s undivided attention so much so that
you can’t possibly put the book down as the tragic end just bowls you over.

The author employs so much of his Catholic religious belief and doctrine in
his writing as the novel progresses and regresses with flash-backs and
transitions and taking us back to the sixties, that it almost looks like you
are reading Bible at times, replete with visuals of existence of God and
some explicit sex thrown in, all at the same time and on the same page. The
imagery used in this novel, especially the conservative way of life of all
the characters, who happen to be staunchly Catholic, and who eventually
become teachers, shapes up a real world full of living colours.

The author skillfully puts all pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together in the
story and switches between characters seamlessly and makes transitions very
easy on the reader. I must point out I had a little hard time figuring out
the timeline of the story though. The book is heavy on emotions, except in
one case where I was certainly looking forward to a really emotive meeting
between the father and his young son, who longed to see his father after a
long separation from his mother, but unfortunately the author missed a great
opportunity to quench the reader’s thirst for this sensational reunion. But
the end is completely captivating and suspenseful, and makes up for all the
logical sequences in the first part. I found all four characters to be too
perceptive of each other, a fact not too common in real life.

All the scenes are eloquently accomplished, complete with minute details
such as the facial and body features and even the clothes, the deportment
and demeanor of each character. Sean’s (the son) character, which was more
conspicuous by its absence in the first half, figures prominently at the
very end. The morality of the story may not have much bearing or relevance
in today’s modern times, but it did occupy a pride of place in the Catholic
society right up to the sixties, and brings lots of nostalgia to those who
lived through those innocent times.

After reading this novel, if you are a true believer in the Roman Catholic
Church, you will never look at the opposite sex in a luscivious way,
especially if you are married or committed, else you would have to pay for
your dear life with grave consequences as depicted in this novel.
Ultimately, no matter what you believe in, you will have to pay for your
sins. There is no free lunch. Like they say in Goa “Korit to Bogit”. And pay
you must, either now or later, as the title aptly says it all, through
“Penance”!

I loved this novel!

If I am not mistaken, the poor guy reacted strongly in

Hi Gabe
Thanks for providing, on Goanet, the letter from E. Pinto. I feel very
sorry for the young student's very bad experience. There can be no excuse
for it whatsoever and I hope the English people in Goa will have read about
it in the Herald.

By way of comment, although it is quite remarkable how millions of visible
minorities have settled quite satisfactorily in the UK over a relatively
short period of time, nationally, there are many reported incidents as
above. The number that go unreported must be even greater. Sadly, such cases
can emerge out of the blue but sometimes peak in crisis times. A link, in
this instance seems to be the alleged terrorist activitry of some groups.

I hope E. Pinto's friend will somehow get over his painful experience at the
hands of three moronic yobs. His college counselling service may be able to
provide some help too. The only solace I can offer is that, although my
family and I, and wide circle of acquaintances have not encountered such a
bad experience ever over a period of decades, it can help to be able to read
anticipatory signs for such possibilities, particularly in poorer
geographical areas. With this in mind, I would be happy to be in touch with
E. Pinto as well as any new students from Goa starting College in the UK
soon.

I remember the small restuarant in the lane where
there was David & Co. The restaurant was opposite the
back entrance of Snowflake.
It belonged to Timothy, a known bootlegger. He a
Mangalorean and his wife a Goan. Timothy was later
shoat at and paralyed. He had by then moved to a posh
apartment in Cuffe Parade. Not sure if he is still
alive.
He had many problems with Snowflake, who were my
friends. Once he picked up a fight and I happened to
be there. I called the Princess Street Police Station
where I knew some officers.
They went to his house and he, seen that these
policemen were not familiar faces as his area came
under the Bori Bunder Police Station, he raised a
stick.
One of the officers later told me that had he struck
any of us he would have shot him. They dragged him,
almost naked, across the Snowflake floor to their van
parked on the front side of Snowflake. Timothy used to
pay "apta" (bribe) to the Bori Bunder police, whose
head was an anglo-Indian, a tall and beefy man. (I
forget his name).
Timothy also owned another restaurant in the lane opp
Snowflake's front entrance. It is in a gully.
Timothy wanted to buy Snowflake but since the owners
turned down all his offers he was angry with them. So,
he began to harass them.

Re: [Goanet] Sonapur Church

2006-08-19 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
Bastora and Anjuna/Vagator clubs are above Kayani restaurant and Guirim
club is on the second floor of Dinsha Mahal. From the balcony of
Bastora union we had a clear view of municipal library, Bastani, snow
flakes, Vienna, fruit kiosk...

In the early 80's my friends at Bastora union showed me Lorna walking to
and fro from her work place. Amazingly they knew the precise time she
passed by.

The balconies are no more after the renovation. Fond memories of my
stay in Bastora union during the summer vacation back then.

Avelino

Hi,

There is also one house in the lane of David and Co, which caters food
and
is crowded in the afternoons, with lots of Goans who eat there. I
believe
the people who do the catering are Mangloreans. It was a chance
happening
that I heard of this place and really enjoyed the food.

As for Hotel Vienna, its now a lodging with rooms available. Last time I
had
gone there, their restaurant business had closed down.

As for the water melon juice as mentioned by Eugene, I tried in Mapuca
in
the cold drink shop near the temple, ( not Hanuman cold drink shop) and
it
really sucked, I would give 100 marks for the one available in Kayani.

Cheers

Eugene, Bastani is closed, Kyani is still open...

In Jan when I went down for my usual quota of Konkani music
cassettes, Bastani was closed. I remember the cashier used
to keep a live cock at the cash counter. On 3rd Marine street,
there is a restaurant 'Nova Goa' but they were not so good.

Aristo,

This is a major problem right now. Miller's survey and
the fact that 14 U.S. states have pending legislation
that would mandate the introduction of unscientific
religious creationist ideas in the high school science
curriculum, have raised an alarm within the science
community. This year's annual meeting of American
Association for the Advancement of Science was devoted
substantially to addressing this problem.

[Goanet] Gilbert's Benign neglect

2006-08-19 Thread Aristo
Hi Gilbert,

I think Santosh and the gang is just over reacting to what you said
about atheists, smokers and people who cheat. I , on the other hand,
think you are on to something here, and would love for you to
elaborate with your long and thoughtful responses to these few
questions. These are not Yes or No answer questions, as you have made
it clear that I would think of you as a sucker otherwise, and that is
certainly not so.

Q1) What is immoral about benevolent atheist/agnostic, that is, if it
is not an "oxymoron" (your current favorite word) ? Do you have a
benign neglect towards atheists like Helen Keller, Abraham Lincoln,
Benjamin Franklin, George Bernard Shaw, Jawaharlal Nehru, John Stuart
Mill? Why?

Q2) What is immoral about smokers who smoke in private, and do not
affect the health of others but themselves?

Q3) What is immoral about divorcee's who come to mutual and amicable
agreement of seperation (considering equal custody of the children)?

Q4) What is the moral equivalence of the above three people, who do
not hurt anybody else, to the people who cheat on their partner, thus
hurting the partner?

Q5) Why is it only theists can be moral and atheists cannot be?

Eagerly awaiting your reply. Don't feel inhibited to write a long one.
The longer, the better. Thanks.

Cheers,
Aristo.

[Goanet] Hitler

2006-08-19 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Now that this discussion on Hitler is into a more intellectual stage, I would
like to add my two cents.

>From my first-hand conversations with German-Americans who lived in Germany
>during the war, one needs to separate the Third Reich rule in the first half
>from the second half of the regime. Most Germans and others agree that Hitler
>and the Nazis were great during the first half of their reign. During this
>period, they pulled the country out of internal political and economic chaos
>and provided national self-respect after World War I. Hence the Pope and the
>Church may for very good reasons supported Hitler for the first period. The
>right-wing regime was also a bulwark against the neighboring communist USSR.

So the take home message, form this case study is that people change. Power
corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Just because something / opinion is written in black and white, it does not
make it true/ factual / correct. Some individuals like to quote books without
knowing the authors' agenda. Some refuse to accept the bias even after
"studying" the work. They rather parrot, refer and interpret the material
endlessly, to support their own agenda and perspectives.

The third aspect, is the limitations of looking at history from a narrow and
focused perspective. For starters, historians view events in a short time
capsule. Ten years of evolving history may be compressed into one page. This
gets further distorted if the historical actions are separated from the
social-political-economic and other historical environment of the time.
This is like someone trying to analyze the current Iraq war without linking it
to the atmosphere post 9/11/2001. Or trying to analyze the London bombings
without a connection to far-away Iraq and Afghanistan. That will likely be done
50-100 years for now.

Finally, the pope is accused of being silent while the Holocaust occurred. How
much does the State of Israel today heed the requests from the Church to end
the genocide of the displaced Palestinian people? Other popes received a
similar reaction to their pleas and prayers to stop the wars in the Mid-East
over the last twenty years. So the Pope's desires and success / failure are
easier debated than accomplished.

Kind Regards, GL

--- Frederick wrote:

* Cornwell, like other scholars, made use of the Vatican archives to research
the conduct of Eugenio Pacelli, both as Nuncio to Germany and as Pope. Thus,
according to Cornwell, Pope Pius XII facilitated the dictator's rise and,
ultimately, the Holocaust

* The nature of the Nazi Party's relations with the Catholic Church is
also complicated. Before Hitler rose to power, many Catholic priests
and leaders vociferously opposed Nazism on the grounds of its
incompatibility with Christian morals. Nazi Party membership was
forbidden until the takeover and a policy reversal. At his trial Franz
von Papen said that until 1936 the Catholic Church hoped for a
Christian alignment to the beneficial aspects he said they saw in
national socialism. (This statement came after Pope Pius XII ended Von
Papen's appointment as Papal chamberlain and ambassador to the Holy
See, but before his restoration under Pope John XXIII.) In 1937 Pope
Pius XI issued the encyclical Mit brennender Sorge condemning Nazi
ideology. The Catholic opposition to the euthanasia programs led them
to be quietly ended in August 28, 1941, (according to Spielvogel pp.
257-258,) but the German Catholics never protested Nazi anti-Semitism
in any comparable way. In Nazi Germany, all known political dissenters
were imprisoned, and many priests were sent to the concentration camps
for their opposition, including the parson of the Berlin Cathedral
Bernhard Lichtenberg. Among the punished priests were Poles persecuted
primarily for their nationality. However, Hitler was never directly
excommunicated by the Catholic Church and several Catholic bishops in
Germany or Austria are recorded as encouraging prayers of support for
"The F?hrer;" this despite the fact the original Reichsconcordate of
Germany with the Holy See proscribed any active political
participation by the priesthood.

And so many other words which are etymologically Portuguese but are now
completely and firmly rooted in "amchi bhas", used by all irrespective of
social stratum or religion, and niched - as Fr. Loiola Pereira very well
puts it - in respectable Konkani lexicons. Their number is legions, I should
say. I am referring to such words as "konsumisanv", "amizad", "burak",
"kopel", "irmid" and many more; and, to speak of hybrids, how about
"xekiment" (from the Konkani "xekim" and the Portuguese ending "mente")?

[Goanet] The Goan literary tradition - what does the future hold?

2006-08-19 Thread Carvalho

Reading the E-Seniors notebook, I am struck by how
strong the literary tradition is, in Goa. The
beautiful narratives transport us to a time most of us
are unaware of and would be lost forever but for the
eloquent words of these men and women.

It is amazing how a small state in India managed to
produce so many great writers spanning four languages.
The feat is akin to that of Ireland. It is said that
the lush Irish green, its wet weather and a hoary
Celtic imagination often fueled by myriad spirits is
what brings out the writer and poet in the Irish.
Certainly we share the green, the wet and the spirit
in its many forms, with the Irish. There is a
wandering minstrel and poet in every Goan soul and it
stirs to life with pen and paper.

Much of Goa's unpublished talent that came of age as
the colonial era snaked to an end, doubtless received
little encouragement to follow a life in the arts.
Nevertheless the wandering mistral persevered amidst
this reluctance. Some became professors at
universities and took to writing only part-time.

The generations that followed fared much worse. The
choice after secondary schooling was narrowed down to
three streams of education, science, commerce or arts,
of which arts was definitely looked upon with much
disdain. Perhaps the quantum of those that followed
their literary ambitions had diminished but certainly
not the zeal and the talent, which is evident in the
prolific writers of Goa today.

What does the future hold for the Goan literary
tradition? It is for the literary luminaries of today
to pave the way, to battle outmoded ideas that exist
surrounding a life involved in the arts and create
opportunities for young writers to put their best pens
forward. A society bankrupt of its artistic heritage
and future is a society bereft of imagination, values,
foresight and ultimately its soul.

Celebrating Goa Day is very important as we have an opportunity to reflect
on what it is like being a Goan while sharing this experience with family and
friends.
The goans from Toronto continue to support Goan unity and solidarity around
the world. We salute Rene Barreto who has shown great leadership in helping
bring Goans around the world together to celebrate Goa Day. We have reached
a very important crossroad in determining where we take our solidarity. The

[Goanet] The goan child and childhood /Melinda Coutinho Powell

2006-08-19 Thread Melinda Powell

Selma wrote:

. But I will say this. Long live the Goan
childhood. From a cursory look at children in Goa, I
know they are healthy, happy and enjoying the
innocence of childhood just as every child should."

Hi Selma,
I loved what you wrote ,and I agree fully with what you say.
Long live the Goan childhood.

Goa has its fair share of problems, but bringing up children in Goa is a
happy ,positive experience.
Im sure Westerners love their kids as much as we love ours, but perhaps their
lifestyles, their jobs,do not allow them the luxury of "time" and
"energy".Also in an attempt to make children independent ,they start really
young and I find it cruel.
Tiny infants ,sleeping alone in nurseries, crying themselves to sleep is sad
.Children need a lot of hugging, and kissing and comfort and security. They
dont ask for much, just your presence. They will get independent
eventually, why rush them?I think not only children are deprived, but parents
miss out on precious moments with their children.

Like you mention,we have grandparents here to lend us a hand.Grandma's
patiently feed kids, tell them stories ,babysit the kids etc.So the strain is
not on the parents. Also, we have maids to help out with misc jobs.

Another difference is when kids are weaning of the bottle, mothers take the
trouble to cook wholesome, nutitious mishmash ( pureed
rice, veg, chicken),broths, tizan .There is a lot of love and caring that goes
into making that meal. While Heinz and Gerber baby food in a bottle, might
have an impressive label and a decent vitamin content, there is nothing like
homemade baby food.

We feed our toddlers,we cajole them,we try different methods to get them to
eat ,we never leave food in front of them, set a time limit ,and expect them
to eat. That is fine when they are older but when they are young, they need
encouragement and nurturing.
Simple routine actions of feeding ,dressing them up ,go a long way in
bonding and cementing a parent/child relationship.

No baby monitors for us here in Goa,anyway there is no electricity half the
time. The greatest security that a child can get from its parents is an arm
across its tiny body,a big hug, a feeling of reassurance"Im there for you".

I think those of us who have had this kind of a childhood, those of us who
can give our kids this kind of childhood are blessed.

Regards.

Melinda

believe he was located in Mumbai. I am just curious to know if there
is anything on record or known about him. His name had come up often
in early Goan papers in the sports sections. Cornel DaCosta

FN NOTES: Sports is not my area of interest, but a search on Google is

Did this have something to do that both these communities were rather
Westernised, somewhat (in different ways) priviledged during colonial
rule with preferences in enterprise or jobs, also having gained from
colonial trade or expansion, and not really competing in the same

Re: [Goanet] Response to Mario Goveia

2006-08-19 Thread cornel
Goanetters,
I was really surprised to find Mario's response (strongly agreed to by
Jose) to be
so feeble. I hope this is not indicative of him losing his bottle. This
surely would not be good for Goanet!

My comments interspersed with Mario's post below, will try hard not to be
personal, except mildly so, when there is no alternative in the need to make
a focused point.

Firstly, by way of reiteration, my post on Hitler as a Catholic, was to
emphasise (as previously) that, Hitler, Stalin, the Cosa Nostra and the
Mafioso
are entirely a part of the equation re the much trumpeted "rock solid
Christian
moral code." No amount of embarrassment about these unsavoury characters,
nor peculiar logic for their
unwarranted exclusion, can justifiably remove them from the equation/debate.

CORNEL: * The point made by me is one based on research evidence and
definitely NOT
meant to address something odd called Mario's logic or commonsense.
Mario's logic and commonsense might be fine for him but definitely not for
me. The whole tenor of my Hitler article was to highlight the vacuous
nature of Mario's mantra of a rock solid Christian moral code if it depends
on the exclusion of the most rotten guys in Christendom for the sake of
convenience.

The historical evidence I searched for, and then provided, and made
available to one and all,
suggests that Hitler was a devout Catholic. Minimally, he attended
services, received sacraments, was most considerate to the clergy and
hierarchy, accepted their adulation, and dutifully paid his dues to the
Church all his life. In my view, he was extremely daft to believe that, he
was doing God's will in exterminating Jews. But obviously, one can never
know the complexity, depth and sincerity of his convoluted belief. Indeed,
that is not our
business (except by way of speculation) as we simply can't be sure where
Hitler stood in his belief in Catholicism. Most certainly, we can't know if
he engaged in a last minute act of in-depth contrition as a sincere
Catholic. Where is the misrepresentation of anything in the above, as
stated by Mario and endorsed by Jose?

Mario's other point (without a shred of evidence) that, "Hitler spent most
of his adult life
publicly rejecting and violating every single one of the rock solid tenets
of Catholicism" can also NOT be extrapolated from the specific evidence I
supplied. History is based on evidence, not on
someone's gut feeling about something. Mario is clear that his judgement on
this matter is based on commonsense. He then chooses not to provide counter
evidence to mine. It is therfore a waste of time in a serious discussion to
debate a fellow's gut
feeling when what is needed is evidence. Get it Mario?

CORNEL * Note Mario's subtle distortion here. First, he quotes me
correctly... "Hitler was
possibly the greatest murderer of all time." Then suddenly my word
"possibly" is removed by Mario. I wonder why Mario's distortion by the
removal of a significant word was necessary? That distortion changes the
meaning of what I had said. He then discusses his distortion as he normally
does (as angrily commented on by many people) on Goanet. The distortion
above is starring Mario in the face in the above paragraph. Get it Mario?
However, Mario may be devious to get vicarious pleasure in scoring points
but he is definitely not daft. I say this because I have just noticed above
that, while he ranted previously that Hitler was an atheist, he has
refrained from saying so above as I had strongly emphasised the point that

Yes, of course. Ever language Konkani came in contact with would have
obviously influenced it. So there's no point in shrugging off the
Portuguese influence (or calling it "alien").

Kannada, a linguistic group which Goa probably had closer ties with
than Marathi prior to the Portuguese, also has its long (and probably
unstudied) influence. About being unstudied, I'm not very sure, as I
vaguely recall some paper presented at a Goa University seminar on the
Kannada influence on Konkani.

I guess even Arabic, because of trading connections, would have some,
if forgotten, influence. Paulo, while I agree there there is some
degree of Lusoallergy still around, we need to move beyond just
Lusostalgic positions. FN

Goans overseas on "World Goa Day " 20th August,

"Goemcar" is "amchem mai bhas" our mother tongue -
KONKANI

To promote KONKANI worldwide -- a few diehard

successful DO OR DIE mission since the last year to
undo the injustice, on the use of scripts for Konkani
language .

This despite the proponents of ---ONLY -one script,
one language, one “LITERATURE ” (with clandestine
motive meant in reality one community, i.e most of
the Hindu Brahmins ) --- thro’ a whisper
campaign, spreading half truths, myths , resurrecting
the ghost of merger, fear of grant of official
status to other languages, the canard of branding
all others (except their miniscule 2% Hindu Brahmin
community) as anti-nationalist or communalist.”

A mission which has steadfastly won the support
of all and sundry viz; Catholics, and Hindu non
Brahmins,- to ensure "UNITY in language
KONKANI and DIVERSITY" in scripts (lipis).

An avowed mission --- to undo once and for all

 1) the COVERT resolution passed by a “ select
few self anointed guardians/mentors of Konkani
language” at the “Sahitya Akademi” viz National
Academy of Letters at New Delhi, nearly twenty five
years ago, on 21st November, 1981 -recognizing
- Konkani in Devanagari as the ONLY “natural”
script (lipi) thereby eliminating all other
scripts (lipi) in use for Konkani language viz 500
years old Roman (Romi), and other scripts like
Kannada, Perso Arabic , Malayalam AND

  2) to ensure Konkani in ROMAN SCRIPT ( Romi lipi)
is accorded official status in the Official Language
Act 1987--- now and without further delay by way
of amendment in section 2(c) by adding"/Roman
script"alongside the present script Konkani in
Devanagari which as of now is the “only” recognized
official script by the Government (at State and
Central level) official purposes.

As Goans worldwide celebrate WGD kindly make it a

Re: [Goanet] Benign Neglect

2006-08-19 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
This is the reason why I find Goanet so hilarious. I have fallen of my chair
laughing. This post exposed the hypocrisy and the pseudo-intellectuals. The two
authors below gave their reasons for and against what I said. Few spouted off,
with some rationale which they only could understand.

Thanks Jose for helping to clarify my short post. There is no difference
between atheists and those who smoke, divorcee, live a homosexual life style or
cheat on their spouse. These are all very LEGAL activities. Those who live any
of these life styles, in fact they would LIKELY welcome new members with
valuable tips. Surprise. :=)) All these are perfectly legal lifestyles,
compared to others that I did not mention but others did. So clearly some do
not know the difference between legal and illegal activities. Also I like
Jose's comments about the "true belief" of believers and non-believers which
surprisingly Santosh finally understands and agrees with you ... and us. That
is exactly what some of us have been saying all along.

Santosh, and others who took the contrarian view, expose their own narrow view
and authoritarian / mean attitude towards those who do not live a similar
lifestyle. Should I, give or not give, consideration to a smoker because
he/she is a catholic? What is Santosh's rationale? The smokers of all beliefs
have an absolute right to smoke in public areas, where such activity is
permitted. And while I refuse to hang around those areas, I greet the
smoker-friends with a "big Hi" from a distance! I do not tell them to smoke or
not to smoke, even though I know better - samkem like the other groups. So I do
not know where is your beef, Santosh? Other than perhaps you do not do so.
Every one has a right to their own thing, if it is permitted by law. And as
per my belief, (rock solid moral code) we need to be kind to these law-abiding
bros. and sis.. As a good citizen, for those who break the law, one needs to
turn them in even if they happen to be one's relative.

Similarly my "indifferent attitude" to someone having an extra-marital affair,
should not surprise you. Perhaps you should learn for it. Statistics report
that about a third of married people have extra-marital affairs. So perhaps you
should be pretty broadminded yourself. These folks are believers and
non-believers, who do not live by their rock solid moral code. Some engaging
in extramarital activity claim a superior life style - like other groups. This
includes being a great calorie burner.:=)) Other posters gave other "good"
reasons.

I try to explain to myself, why our "logical" Santosh is off-the-wall with my
very reasonable view which likely is held by many goanetters. The only
explanation I could come up for his outburst is possibly the term "Benign
Neglect" spooked him. This is a term used in medical practice or rather
medical malpractice. If it is the extra-marital relation that outrages him,
then perhaps he may have seen the Indian (social) documentary which was
recently screened in the USA. The thought-provoking and gut-wrenching movie is
called "WATER". It touched on some hidden social issues of "conservative"
India. I do not know how many goanetters saw this movie.

Beyond the above explanations, perhaps Santosh has to get his mind out of
theological texts and into the real world around him. He is outraged about
extramarital affairs. But a few weeks ago, claimed that modern thinking has
improved today's social mores. Or is my liberal colleague just ignoring or
denying or sweeping modern liberal social issues under the carpet?:=)) Yet, he
may be making his not uncommon U turn and agreeing with us.

Kind Regards, GL

--- Santosh Helekar

I find Gilbert?s statement bigoted because of the following reasons:

1. Under all democratic constitutions an atheist is no different from a person
of any other faith. He/She should not be treated differently from others
because of his/her religious beliefs or lack thereof. Nobody would dare to
announce in this forum that he/she reacts to a Catholic with "benign neglect".

2. The lumping of a smoker, a divorcee, a homosexual and an atheist with
someone who cheats on his/her spouse reveals how contemptuous and
discriminatory Gilbert is towards the former four types of individuals. Nobody
would dare to claim in this forum that his "benign neglect" towards a Catholic
or a Goan is no different from that towards someone who cheats on his/her
spouse.

"Im afraid you have got it a bit wrong. The goans in the Armed Forces
did not need any parsi to assist in their promotions! I can assure you
that those who reached higher ranks, did so on their own merits.
Nothing to do with Parsis whatsoever.
I cannot however vouch for the other central govt. services.

Gilbert,
I did not intend to detract from the obvious acheivements of our community
in the Armed Forces and all things being equal and in an ideal world, they
would have risen to senior and the top positions on their own merits.
However, wherever we are - and the Indian Armed Forces is no exception - it
is far from an ideal world.

Promotions up to a certain officer rank are automatically based on seniority
subject to a clean record of course, but after that when there are less
positions than there are eligible personnel, it becomes a metaphorical
free-for-all. The interested parties are a) the General Officers and their
Air Force and Naval equivalents who are in favor of promoting officers who
have directly served under them sometime during their career, on the
principle of 'better the devil I know than the devil I don't', b) the
'know-it-all" bureaucracy who would like to appoint a "pliant officer" who
would better understand their 'clever' motives and strategies c) the
politicians in the defence ministry, the Prime Ministers Office and even the
PM himself who have their own party considerations, not the least of which
is community and caste and d) the Intelligence Apparatus who have bulky
dossiers on all top officers, that they can manipulate according to the
wishes of who at that point in time controls them.

Sometimes thank God, specially in a situation when the country is in dire
need, these various pressures can speak with one voice in favor of the
officer with the most merit AND the least controversy (read: Parsi or Goan -
the Anglo Indians have all settled in Australia) or thankfully at other
times these various lobbies neutralize one another leaving the field open to
the candidate with the same qualities mentioned earlier. The Pakistan Wars,
the Khalistan Insurrection, the North East rebellions, The Emergency during
Indira Gandhi and the formation of the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) for
the Sri Lanka intevention, were situations like these.

[Goanet] Message forthe World Konknni Day 20 August 2006

2006-08-19 Thread Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr
Message for the World Konknni Day

On August 20, 1992 Konknni was included in the Eighth Schedule of
Constitution of India through an amendment. Thus on this day Konknni
became one of the official languages of India. 20 August is observed as
Konknni Day by Konknnis (Konknni speakers) in India and abroad.

Providentially or accidentally this year 20 August falls on Sunday and the
Catholic Church all over the world observes it as Justice Sunday. Let us be
proud that our mother tongue Konknni is an Official Language of India. When
Konknni was included in the Eighth Schedule the script of Konknni is not
mentioned. Hence from this fact we could definitely conclude that Konknni
language was recognized and not any one of its scripts.

Konknnis are spread out in various parts of India and world. They have
preserved their mother tongue through their own native dialects and scripts.
Therefore, Konknni is alive and continues to be a dynamic language. If a
section of Konknnis insists or imposes with a particular dialect or script,
Konknni will become an archaic language. In Goa Roman and Devanagari
scripts are used for Konknni. Unfortunately, Roman script has not got the
official status due to the selfishness of a section of Konknnis. Unless
Roman script gets equal and official status there is no real justice to
Konknni. If there is no justice to Konknni written in Roman script we
cannot talk about brotherhood and sisterhood. Mere celebration of Konknni
Day has no meaning without equality and dignity to all sections of Konknnis.
On World Konknni Day let us reflect on the following words of J.H. da Cunha
Rivara (23 June 1800 - 20 February 1879), a Portuguese Govt. official who
was the General Secretary to the Portuguese Governor General of India in Goa
for more than 15 years.

"It is now time to undo the damage caused. The time has come to restore the
mother tongue to its rightful place. To you, then, the Goan Youth, is
reserved this great work, essential element of the intellectual and social
regeneration of your countrymen!

The methodical culture of the mother tongue will bring you closer to the
Marathi Language; it will facilitate the knowledge of the Asiatic and
European languages, ancient and modern, and thereby useful knowledge will be
opened to your intelligence; and the treasures of the world, till now hidden
from you, due to the absence of this instrument of exploration, will be
opened to you.

Let fools laugh and shout from the depth of their ignorance that the
language has no grammar, that it is not capable of being written and that as
it is in common use now by only a few individuals, the exertion on its study
is insufficiently compensated; that its varieties and dialects from province
to province, even from caste to caste, make it complicated and
unintelligible, and that is so corrupted that it cannot be purified.
If however, you feel that these ignorant critics deserve a reply, tell them
that this book and all others that will follow it prove t whether the
language has a grammar or not, whether it is conducive to writing or no. Do
not be ashamed to imitate the example of the British nation, exerting itself
to cultivate in Europe, the semi-barbarous dialect of Malta, spoken scarcely
by 70,000 persons, and in India the harsh Jataki or Baloochi, the Pushtu of
Afghan and other such languages. Tell them that the varieties of Konkani,
from province to province or from caste to caste, are not greater than the
dialects of old Greek, modern Italian, French or German etc. And lastly its
very corruption should be an incentive to you to improve it, to purge it,
rather than to despise it. And if they yet persist in their outcry, do not
give heed to it but move on.

Indeed, this enterprise is not easy, but it useful, it is honourable, it is
glorious.

And that you may have as far as possible a light-house to guide you in the
midst of darkness caused by the foolishness of some and the malice of
others, we conclude by listing for you some aids to which you may have
recourse."

Re: [Goanet] Nachne

2006-08-19 Thread maurice dmello
The subject of 'nachnne' made an interesting reading, and the mention
of 'ambil' stirred boyhood memories. During wartime (WW-the big one!), when
rice was in shortage, our elders it seems used to add ground nathnne or what
we call nathno to the rice gruel called thandlla paez. When this coarsely
ground nathno was added to the paez, it was called 'ambil paez'.

Nathno plant has thin long leaves and the nathno matures on the 'khanshi' of
the plant. This used to be a cash crop, grown beside chilli and kanngi (sweet
potato), vegetable like red bhaji, string beans(Alsande), bhende etc. In
southern India, it is extensively grown and used as a staple diet. It has
cooling effect on the body and is nutritious.

Nathnno and wheat (goum) used to be ground, strained and with jaggery and
coconut juice was boiled to prepare a pudding we called 'manni' similar to
Goan 'Nasne tizan', and was poured on a large banana leaf placed on a huge pan
called 'thadpe(used to separate rice from husk, broken rice etc). Once
cooled, it used to slightly harden and could be cut into slices and relished
as it used to just melt in the mouth!!!

I remembered a Kunnbi song where 'ambil' was mentioned and requested Dom
Fernades for help, and he was kind enough to mail me the entire article that
also included the song, which is given below in part:

"Bolaqen gott ga Kunnbi nokdda khambo
Paus votan arbo teje jivit lambo
Ambil gottai, di taka vokta thembo
Sokallim aura toear sadgaxim kombo"

Another folk song that I came across where mention of achnne is made, is
the song that was part of another article by none other than Dom Frenandes.
The article begins thus:

The lyrics of the following Konkani folk song KOMBO-KOMBIECHI AMIZAD or
rooster-hen friendship. The song begins with praise for the rooster, followed
by allegations resulting in proposal and demand for dowry and 'vojem', and
finally a forced marriage because the hen is already laying eggs!
"Kaiboro mozo kombo, zobor apurbaiecho.(the song continues...)
..Zobor mhaka khoxi, tuje kombiek sun korchi .. Ani hanvui khoxi zanvuim
korchi, doth ghetoloi kitli? Ti diteleachi khoxi.. Borem kunddo ek
paili

Barik tandull don poddi ani nachnneanchi annatti ."

  Best regards
  Maurice D'Mello

2006-08-19 Thread cornel
The Parsi community in East Africa was small. The Parsis would have gone to
East Africa ( Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) along with other Indian communities.
Several schooled at my primary and Goan secondary school in Mombasa and some
have continued to be lifelong friends. On reflection, I don't think any of
us co-ed students saw any particular distinction between the Goans (the
majority in this Goan High School), Arabs, Chinese, Seycheloise, Parsis,
Ismaili, other Indian, and the few African and European pupils. I think
besides having to focus on study, we were too busy with sport, music and
other extra-curricular activities to worry about ethnic differences. On
reflection too, the school was a great place to be in with such a pleasant
mixed intake.

[Goanet] CM RANE PLAYS AT BEING A HERO

2006-08-19 Thread airesrod
The increasing crime rate in the State is a matter of
deep concern and immediate remedial steps needed to be
taken to stop Goa going the Bihar way.

One has to strongly condemn Goa Chief Minister
Pratapsingh Raoji Rane's high-handed visit to the
Panaji police station on August 16th to interrogate
the alleged five accused involved in the gruesome
murder of Mandar Surlakar.

One wonders if Chief Minister Rane was in his senses
when he visited the police station. Mr. Rane is the
first and only Chief Minister in India's history to
interrogate the accused in a crime and thereby
directly interfering in the investigation.

Mr. Rane's vested motive to visit the police station
is now very clear but the police have to be also
questioned as to how they allowed the Chief Minister
to interrogate the accused.

Chief Minister Rane's hour long interrogation of the
accused has to be condemned by all as no politician
should be allowed to interfere with the investigation
of any crime or the administration of justice.

Goans should be proud of this good man - Frank D'Souza
By Lenny Barretto

I feel, mention must be made of a Senior Citizen to whom Goans owe much.

Frank D'Souza was born and educated in Karachi. He was the first Indian to be
appointed by the
British, as a member of the Railway Board of India. In those days, a small
group of men
controlled
the mighty railways of India. It was the railways that kept the Indian Empire
working efficiently

and effectively. Therefore, it was important that membership of the Board was
the perserve of the

best, and Frank D'Souza being one of the best was appointed to the Railway
Board of India.

After finishing school with a Matrticulation, Frank D'Souza started to work as
a Railway Guard in
one of the Railways. He was a self-made man and educated himself over the
years. At the time of
Partition - Frank D'Souza opted for India and because of the Evacuee Property
Law, which was
established by both India and Pakistan, he lost his large property "Maryville"
in Karachi,
Pakistan.

At the time, Pakistan urgently needed the services of someone to set-up the
Railway system in
Pakistan. Pakistan decided the only man to help in this direction was Frank
D'Souza. Mohammed
Ali
Jinnah, Founder of Pakistan and the First Governor-General of Pakistan
specifically requested
Frank
D'Souza for his help in setting-up the Railway system in Pakistan. Frank
agreed, but on condition

that his home "Maryville" be returned to him. Jinnah and the Government of
Pakistan agreed.
Frank D'Souza always helped and supported Goans and often suggested that Goans
should always try
to support each other. He set an example. When he came to Pakistan, he stayed
at a Goan-owned
hotel "Braganza Hotel". He could have asked the Government of Pakistan to
arrange for him to stay
in the best hotel. Frank was known for his transparently honest Christian
character.

On completion of his job in Pakistan and before returning to India, Frank
D'Souza gave his
beautiful home "Maryville" to an order of Nuns. If he wanted, he could have
sold his home in
foreign exchange for a good sum. The nuns made "Maryville" into a Senior
Citizen Home. I had
close aunts who lived in the Home and were well looked after for the rest of
their lives by the
Sisters of Mercy. A few years ago Frank D'Souza's only son - Ronald- a
Catholic Priest - lived
the last few years of his life at the home. He died at the ripe old age of 92.

Gilbert appears to have now found refuge in
name-calling, while going through some kind of
twisting and turning to rationalize his statement of
moral equivalence between practices that are not
regarded by modern society as immoral, namely atheism,
homosexuality, divorce and atheism, and that which is
regarded as immoral, namely cheating on a spouse.

It is hard to understand, as usual, what he is trying
to say, but a couple of questions that I have, in
addition to the ones that Aristo has asked are:

1. Is Gilbert claiming that cheating on a spouse
should be considered moral because a relatively high
percentage of people engage in this behavior?

2. Is he claiming that more people cheat on their
spouses now than in ancient times? If so, does he have
statistics to back this statement?

Cheers,

Santosh

[Goanet] Why Condoms Will Never Stop AIDS in Africa

2006-08-19 Thread Holy Spirit Interactive
Dirty Little Secret: Why Condoms Will Never Stop AIDS in Africa

by Sue Ellin Browder

Every ten seconds, a man, woman, or child in Africa dies from an AIDS-related
disease. According to the USAIDS/World Health Organization (WHO), 40.3 million
people now live with HIV infections, two-thirds of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
In Swaziland, 42.6 percent of pregnant women test positive for HIV.

There’s no cure for this killer, and no end in sight. The United Nations
predicts that if present trends continue, AIDS will claim an additional 65
million lives by 2020—more than triple the number of those who died in the
first 20 years of the pandemic.

It has been five years since New York Times columnist Bob Herbert wrote that
most of us are simply unable to grasp the enormity of this disaster. “We are
in the early stages of an unprecedented threat to the health of the human
species,” he warned. “The long dark night of AIDS has just begun.”

Gilbert is right. Benign atheist smokers who are homosexual could not have
cheated on their wives
since homosexuals have partners and not wives. However, divorced smokers who
have a rock solid
moral code are usually neglected in a less benign way than homosexual atheists.

What Gilbert is saying is absolutely clear.

[Goanet] Coco, meme, Monno! and other bad names in Toronto!

2006-08-19 Thread Silviano Barbosa
We were driving on Highway 427 North today and I saw "Memme" on a sign
board, So I asked my kids , "Hey you guys know what "memme" means in
Konkani?", they said "No". So I said it means "fish". Then my daughter said
: "I thought "Nishtem" was fish. I said "That's right, but 'memme means fish
in kid's language". Then my son said "What's kid's language?'. I said "Arre,
in Goa, in olden days you had to speak to kids in kids' Konkani language for
them to understand.
"Like you don't say "xit" for rice, you say "Coco".
Remember in olden days, mothers used to scare the kids "Arre Monno etolo
veguim jei" or "Baba tujeo uuo kaddtam na zalear mure teo Uoo tuka ubarun
tea vodlea shetant uddoitolio:" and the kids would let their mother hurt
their skull, ani "s" kon teo liko, uuo nakttam ghalun uuo martalim.
"Baba tum mosteo konakam, tuk mure Dev hast laitolo, Choool kon kailim ghan
Inferna ujea lashtolo" and we poor kids would believe our mothers ani amgue
lissaum kotalei. Atanche bhurgue hem korpak assai?
Tuvem tenkam hat lailear. "Mom I will call 911" mhun police-k apoupak assai.
The kids have all their rights and mummy and daddy are having their fights.

*

Last week I went for my friend's barbecue party for his son's birthday
party. His son Savio after working for IBM for 4 years is going back to
school, as he is doing his Ph. D. in Engineering. So he had some colleagues
from his U. of T. (University of Toronto) days. Most of his colleagues were
a mixed ethnic crowd.
So Savio started to introduce them to us:

"Hi guys. This is Eric"
I said "Eric? What's your last name?" ( I wanted to know "To Konnnalo?" as
he was brown and first name being western)
Eric said "Kader"
We old Goans started laughing, when someone whispered "ericador-u?".
Now you won't believe who was the next. Many of you know about that Hindi
film producer "Subhash Ghai"(pronounced "ghei" in English)
This guy comes up to me and says," I am Ajit Ghai" like "ajit ghe" and
everyone of us old Goans start kakading (laughing) holding our
stomachs.(first "ericador ani atam "ajit (enema) ghe?)
So two more people are introduced and nothing happens. But then there is
this white Italian girl who comes up and introduces herself, " Hi guys I am
'Marla Fusco' . So you guys know what happened then!(Kitem fusco marla?
Konnem?)
No more stomach holding. What a party! What a free entertainment. What they
must be thinking of us?
I kid you not.
This all happened in Etobicoke, Toronto, not in EtobiPepsi or Mrs. Sauga!
This old Goan Bardez lady said 'arre Shi Baba, kohlim pozzdim navam re
hanchim?"
Bye Cheers!

[Goanet] A MESSAGE TOTHE WORLD OF GOANS ON 'WORLD GOA DAY-2006'

2006-08-19 Thread Goa Su-Raj Party

August 20 of each year is a day celebrated all over the world by Niz
Goemkars only to show the depth of their love for their Motherland Goa. It
is not important that our Motherland was ravaged by many an alien rulers
which included the Portuguese, before 1961. It is not important that our
Motherland has been ravaged , even more so, after the so called 'liberation'
in 1961 by the liberators themselves who even to this day are hell bent on
ravaging the person of our Motherland to their own benefits and interests.
But it is important that Niz Goemkars do a little introspection on this
WORLD GOA DAY and come out of our lethargy and complacency which has been
taken as 'weakness' by the marauders to heap more and more insults on our
Motherland, may it be its governance; may it be the denial for the rightful
claims of its 'tongue' Konkani; may it be the respect for its sons of the
soil, all through its own sons of the soil who have been blinded with
self-enrichment and avarice.

We, Niz Goemkars wish and want to fight back these injustices unto our
Motherland. But our numbers are far so few and spread-out to make a pointed
thrust to dislodge the evil forces and bring them to their knees. We gather
initial and much desired momentum when we want to show our resentment but
unfortunately, we do not move forward to attain our much lauded goals, all
to the happiness and contentment of the evil forces, who, all the time go on
multiplying like the common cold bacteria with the right ambient atmosphere
of lack of fear of justice, which they themselves command.

When Niz Goemkars get together, the goals are the same. We see this
manifested in newer groups cropping up, such as 'Save Goa Front' led by
Adv. Aires Rodrigues; 'Borda Citizen's Committee' led by Lawry Abranches
and Socorro Fernandes; 'Lok Shakti' led by Dr. Francisco Colaco; and the
most recent 'Goemche Niz Mogi' led by James Fernandes and Fr. Antim Gomes.
And, for the last 6 years, right from 31st August, 2000, there has been the
registered 'Goa Su-Raj Party', a veritable convert from an NGO, with a
Constitution, un-paralleled and un-surpassed, through the inclusion of
Articles in its body i.e. Art. 34, Art 38, Art 40 and Art 41, which
commitments are the need of the hour, if our Motherland is to be
reintroduced to it former glory of effective governance such as Gaunkaries
(Comunidades) for agrarian excellence and the Rule of Law for common good,
peace and harmony. Perhaps, it is the 'EGO' in us Goans which inspires us to
splinter ourselves rather than join forces against our common enemies.

Six years ago the founders of the 'Goa Su-Raj Party' have put in place the
important tool for the fight to evict the evil forces at play in Goa in the
realization that 'POLITICS MUST BE FOUGHT TOOTH AND NAIL WITH SUPERIOR,
UNSELFISH POLITICS' . Towards that end, and for the benefit of the World of
Goans, Goa Su-Raj Party has released its 'ROAD MAP FOR GOA' on the occasion
of the World Goa Day, 2005. Towards that end, and to instill a fighting
spirit in the World of Goans, Goa Su-Raj Party has released its CAMPAING
DIALOGUES 1 & 2 with Political Jingles 1, 2 & 3 along with the Party's
theme songs "Goa Su-Raj" lyrics and music composed by Basilio Magno, a
concerned Goan in Spain, music directed by Fr. Peter Cardozo of Pilar-Goa
and sung by Young Chicko, a Goemcho Tiartist with a golden voice; and,
"Amchem Goem" -lyrics composed by our present Party President Dr. N.S. Dumo,
music composed and directed by Fr. Peter Cardozo , Pilar-Goa and sung by
Kiran Kerkar. The campaign dialogues and the theme songs are available to be
downloaded at the Party's website www.goasu-raj.org.

On this WORLD GOA DAY, the Goa Su-Raj Party commends in no uncertain terms
the enthusiasm, commitment and dedication shown towards uniting Goan, by
Rene Barreto to take forward and co-ordinate the World Goa Day celebrations
world-wide. And, likewise, on this WORLD GOA DAY the Goa Su-Raj Party prays
that Goans all over the world will unite as one to take the fight to
liberate Goa the second time from the clutches of the enemies of Goa and
Goans which would make the 'all past alien ruler of Goa' look like saints.

And last but not the least, on this WORLD GOA DAY- 2006, the Goa Su-Raj
Party wishes each and every GOAN a World Goa Day full of joy and unity in
CELEBRATIONS.

Sd/-
Floriano Lobo,
General Secretary/Spokesperson
Goa Su-Raj Party.

[Goanet] Putting Catholic prejudices in context

2006-08-19 Thread Carvalho

My father used to be a bigot. The word immediately
conjures up images of burning trains and frenzied mobs
but anyone who knows my father knows him to be a most
congenial soul. So let me put his Catholic prejudices
into context.

My paternal great-grandmother must have been at best a
second-generation convert. Ancestry from her side of
the family is almost untraceable, but given the
physical features of her kith and kin, which were fair
of face, green-eyed and tall of stature; I am assuming
a migratory possibly Northern tribe found their way to
Goa.

Whatever the religion of her ancestors was, it must
have had some shamanistic element to it, for Sunday
Mass was almost invariably followed by a trip to the
"Maar". She saw no dichotomy in this act whatsoever.
By the time, my parent's generation came of age, such
duality of worship had been successful purged thanks
in part to formal education , but also largely to the
efforts of the Catholic church.

The Church however, was ever watchful of lapses that
caused many Goans, even well into the 20th century, to
continue some form of "pagan" worship. Doubtless, one
way to counter this was to spread vicious canards
about other religions. That they worshiped animals,
that they were unclean, that their Gods had several
hands and as many heads. Canards made more plausible
by the increasing distance, both geographical and
political, created by colonialism between these two
religions. My father bought the party-line
unquestioningly.

This is what Goan born journalist Rajdeep Sardesai has
to say about Goa:

---
"Let us be honest, there are two distinct communities
-- Goan Catholics and Hindus. They have lived for
centuries through a process of what I would call
"civilised segregation", in the sense that there has
been no open hostility between the communities but
there has been limited interaction at a personal
level. There has been attempts over the years to
exploit these divisions, particularly by the post
independence politicians of Goa."
---

My generation is the first called up to truly
assimilate. And we've failed. We are all too ready to
endorse Freud's "narcissism of minor differences",
embrace our suspicions and hoist our disrespect. This
unfortunately from both sides of the aisle.

My father was a victim of his time and over the years
has painstakingly revised so many of his ill-conceived
notions. We on the other hand have no excuses to
harbour ours.
