The Spice Trade, A Taste of Adventure:
KERALA, INDIA, AND THE MOLUCCA ISLANDS, INDONESIA
-
Soon after dawn on May 21st 1498, Vasco da Gama and his
crew arrived at Calicut after the first direct sea voyage
from Europe to Asia. If history’s modern age has a
beginning, this was it. Europe’s ignorance of, and
isolation from, the cosmopolitan intellectual and
commercial life of Asia were ended forever. With ships,
weaponry and a willingness to use them both, the countries
of Europe were about to colonize the rest of the world. To
support this expansion, its merchant classes would invent
new forms of commercial credit and the first great
corporations, vital parts of capitalism’s operating system,
and spread their trading networks across the seven seas.

And what did the men shout as they came ashore? "For Christ
and spices!"

The proselytising part turned out to be disappointingly
unnecessary: there were already plenty of Christians living
on the Malabar coast, following the arrival of a Syrian
contingent many centuries earlier.

But as far as spice went, Vasco da Gama and his crew were
right on the money. Then, as now, Calicut was a gateway to
the world’s greatest pepper-growing region — indeed this
was why the Syrians had moved there in the first place. As
such it was at the heart of the spice trade, a network of
sea routes and entrepôts in the making for millennia: the
world economy’s oldest, deepest, most aromatic roots.

Smithsonian and Turner: Just another media stunt?
Date: Sun, 03 Dec 2006 11:50:08 -

THE DISCOVERIES MARKED THE END OF THE FASCINATION FOR
SPICES

Lisboa, Jornal PÚBLICO, 3 December 2006, Sunday Bulletin on
Culture,
p. 33

Trade in spices did not begin with the arrival of Vasco da
Gama in
India in 1498 as we are made to believe in the text books
in our
first classes of History of Portuguese Discoveries. The
Egyptians
used spices and the Romans had organized trade routes for
commerce of
spices.
Jack Turner, an Australian researcher and author of Spice –
The
History of a Temptation, reconstructs the history of spice
trade
from Egypt to the arrival of the Portuguese, the English
and the
Dutch in the East. The only major difference that the
Portuguese
introduced was the change of the route.
Turner wrote one of the 20 essays for the catalogue of the
exposition
entitled Encompassing the Globe, which has been inaugurated
in
Washington at the Simthsonian Institute. The exposition
seeks to
present the views of a new generation of historians. Turner
seeks to
respond to a central issue and question: Why were the
spices so
important for the Portuguese? They were used since the
second
millennium BP for cooking, as medicines and as
aphrodisiacs. They
were much sought by the elites. The results were not always
the most
satisfying, and some were even recipes for torture: imagine
a mix of
honey, peper and wine for better sight, or applying pepper
to
genitals as sexual stimulant!
Pepper was most in demand before and after the Portuguese
discovery
of the Cape route. In the first years of this route in the
16th
century nearly 90 % of the Portuguese cargo consisted of
pepper. When
there were shipwrecks with this cargo aboard, they would
provoke
black tidal waves.
Despite the Portuguese crown investments, it never made the
expected
profits with this trade. Bad administration and excessive
expenses
with transport and defence did not permit the Portuguese to

neutralize its rivals. The Portuguese crown tried in vain
to fix the
prices in Europe by trying to keep the monopoly of this
trade. It
never succeeded in doing this. There was corruption and
parallel
black market which benefited the country, but not the
crown.
Despite the limited benefits, the spices were greatly
responsible for
promoting a new vision of the world. It would not have been
possible
without Gama, who cannot be seen as a discoverer, but as a
merchant
and investor.
Turner concludes that the Portuguese Discoveries had a
major cultural
impact and were vital for the evolution of the modern world
and for
the beginning of the globalization.
Very differently from the traditional economic and
political readings
of the impact of the pepper, cinnamon and ginger trade, the

Australian historian is more interested in analysing the
impact upon
the lives and imagination of peoples across centuries. The
high point
of the trade in

What was unheard of a generation ago ?

Re: [Goanet] The Mess that is Goa

2006-12-05 Thread Bosco D'Mello
I found Sunith's comparisons of NewYork of the 1900s with present day Goa
amusing. Instead of moving forward he seems to be acknowledging that Goa is
going backward. Never mind crime and corruption in New York in the 1900s;
Contemporary Goa draws parallels to Southern Italy of the 1970s, 80s, 90s -
with similar tales of the Cosa Nostra & the Corleones. Big difference - Goa
is yet to find its Giovanni Falcone or Paolo Borsellino.

If Sunith was amusing, Cecil Pinto's stand on the debate was down right
hilarious (just like his weekly column) complete with a list of laws and
by-laws from the Canadian landscape of the 19th (not even 20th) century. I
guess only in Goa is safe to fall off a two-wheeler travelling at 5kmph.
Cecil's penchant for detail, cracked me up today when he ferreted out
Helga's blooper.

One fella had to write-in to say he had no opinion. I thought Netiquette
demanded one just kept quiet if one did not have an opinion.

Apart from the sometimes jingoistic exchanges on this thread, are we
sincerely ready to acknowledge Goa's shortcomings? Or is Valmiki Faleiro,
Aires Rodrigues, VM, Floriano Lobo and other eminent personalities in Goa
that address social issues at the grassroots just shooting the breeze ??

For some unfortunate reason (possibly personal) this turned into a
Goan-expatriate vs Goan-in-Goa exchange. I think the latter should let the
former indulge himself in nostalgic recollections. That's how the human
psyche works. I find it absurd that a Goan-expatriate should be disqualified
from expressing (him)herself on issues in Goa especially when some of us
have family that live in Goa or own real estate and/or a business(es)
there - we are affected in some way or the other. Its quite natural for the
human psyche to wish for a better life not just for themselves but for
family and friends in Goa too.

I think everybody subscribed here or expresses an opinion here about Goa,
does so because we care about Goa. While Goan expatriates may love and
cherish Goa, there is a finite limitation as to what they can do to
influence issues in Goa. We Goans have been a vagabond people that have
perpetually migrated within Goa, India and the corners of the world.
Irrespective of where we are, we will always have an opinion of Goa.

[Goanet] Discrimination at IFFI irks southern filmmakers

2006-12-05 Thread Frederick \"FN\" Noronha
Discrimination at IFFI irks southern filmmakers
By R.G. Vijayasarathy, Indo-Asian News Service

Panaji, Dec 5 (IANS) Southern filmmakers are angry with organisers of
the just concluded International Film Festival of India (IFFI) for
giving undue importance to Bollywood and are threatening to boycott
the event next year.

Award-winning Tamil and Malayalam director T.V. Chandran came down
heavily on the organisers and said filmmakers from the south might not
participate next year if they are not given equal importance.

Well-known Tamil director-actor Cheran, whose film "Thavamai
Thavamiirindu" was showcased at IFFI, was annoyed because the usual
procedure before a film's screening in such festivals was not
followed. He was allowed to speak on the occasion only when he
threatened to walk out.

"It is not Bollywood alone that represents Indian cinema," an angry
Cheran told IANS.

Nine of Chandran's films, including his first Tamil film "Aadum
Koothu", were screened at the festival. But he was "extremely unhappy"
because of "the profound lack of knowledge" about the south.

Both Cheran and Chandran were surprised that the festival directorate
had not given proper prominence and publicity to south Indian films
selected for the Indian Panorama.

They criticised the "lack of publicity" for their films and said
publicity material was not used even though it had been sent to the
organisers before the screening. The focus, filmmakers said, was on
"pleasing the invitees from Bollywood".

Well-known Kannada film director Girish Kasaravalli has called for
IFFI being shifted to southern venues other than Goa, a proposal that
has found support from many filmmakers from southern states.

When the forest where the birds lived went up in

fire.

>From a distance, the other animals laughed and mocked
it. "What do you think you are doing?" they shouted.
"This fire is overwhelming. You can't do anything."

Finally, the hummingbird turned to them and said, "I'm

Navy committed to welfare of Goans: Rear Admiral
NT News Service

Vasco, Dec 2: The Flag Officer Commanding Goa Area, Rear Admiral, AVSM NM,
Sanjay Vadgaokar said that Navy being an integral part of Goa is strongly
committed to welfare of Goans and despite severe shortages in trained
manpower, it has opened the Dabolim airfield for 24 hours of operation since
September 2003.Rear Admiral Vadgaokar was interacting with the press at INS
Gomantak, as a part of Navy Week celebration organized by the Flag Officer
Commanding Goa Area and Flag Officer Naval Aviation on Friday evening.

"The Indian Navy is probably one of the few navies in the world which
encourage civil operations from it's airfields" stated Rear Admiral
Vadgaokar and further added that towards this end, on realising limitations
and restrictions on the availability of parking space and civil dispersal a
total of 25 acres of land had recently been handed over to the Airport
Authority of India.

He also stated that the navy has assets of Rs 75 crore in Goa and Rs 1,000
crore has been spent on infrastructure. He further said that Dabolim is the
largest airbase of Indian Navy and is operating six different types of
aircrafts.

He also informed that the navy is operating 24 hours and has upgraded its
system. "There is also an exclusive radar for civil operation at Dabolim
airbase" stated Rear Admiral Vadgaokar.

He opined that the navy is a risk-oriented profession and it's strength is
about 6,000 in Goa. This also includes.(sic)

It was also informed about Rs 40 crore is being spent to enhance the runway
itself. It was also disclosed that the Navy has given 84 per cent of the
time to civil operation. "If the civil aviations stretch their operations
during night times than there would be no confusion at the Dabolim airport,"
added Rear Admiral Vadgaokar. He also clarified that the navy has restricted
the civil operation at Dabolim airport for only four and half hours that is
from 8.30 a.m morning till 1 p.m.

"The Navy has gone out of it's way towards promoting civil air operations,
in this regard several additional facilities have been installed to
facilitate the commercial flights" said Rear Admiral Vadgaokar and further
pointed out that It may be interestingly to note that other than radar, none
of these additionally installed facilities are required for operations of
military aircraft from Dabolim. He added that purely from the point of view
of the national security on a broader canvas the navy at Goa is a backbone
of Maritime Operations on the West coast of India.

"It needs no elaboration that the navy and Goa are synonymous to each other,
be it may the erstwhile Portuguese Navy or the Indian Navy post-liberation,
the bond of trust between the navy and the people of Goa is strong and
therefore very integrated" stated Rear Admiral Vadgaokar.

He informed that the first Naval Detachment was established in Goa on
January 1, 1962 when the office of first Naval Officer-in-Charge (Goa) was
established at Headland Sada.

"As the years passed by the erstwhile Portuguese Garrison which included
land of Dabolim, Major Bunder Jetty, the area at Chicalim where we presently
have the Naval Armament Depot, the Mangor and Alpaqures hills and all were
taken over by the Government of India (since Goa was the Union Territory
then)". And this entire Garrison was later handed over to Navy by the
Government of India for the custody and establishment of a Naval Area. It
must be mentioned that the growth of nNavy in Goa was simultaneous to growth
of the Indian Navy at other places like Mumbai, Vizag, Kochi as well.

Rear Admiral Vadgaokar stated that the naval base at Karwar is presently
only capable of berthing of ships and submarines and not for accommodating
large bodied aircraft and their operations.

"There is no airfield in Karwar Naval Base" stated Rear Admiral Vadgaokar
and further pointed out that a provision does exist in the blue print of the
second phase of 'Project Seabird' to have a small airfield at Karwar however
it's use will be limited to operations of helicopters and small aircraft
primarily to maintain supply lines to the ships and submarines". Rear
Admiral Vadgaokar cleared its stand saying that the topography and
geographical location of Karwar does not permit operations of large bodied
aircraft operations of large bodied aircraft.

He said that the Navy Day is being celebrated on December 4 as the Karachi
harbour was set ablaze in a daring attack launched by the Indian Navy during
1971 Indo-Pak war.

"Taking this auspicious opportunity of Navy Day for this year the
Headquarter Goa Naval Area has undertaken numerous activities to be clos

[Goanet] Little Goans - We make those Goans Great! Viva Gandhi-class Goans!

2006-12-05 Thread Silviano Barbosa

The "Great Goans" thread reminds me of an old posting of mine made during
the dawn of the New Millennium.

Here it is!
**

Sado Monis ( Not The Millennium Man)

By Silviano C. Barbosa (email [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Toronto, Canada October 9, 1999

As the new Millennium almost sets in, we are bombarded with the titles,
selections, nominations for the "Millennium Goan" or "Goan Man of the
Century". It is true, there are illustrious names of Goans, past and
present, of what they have achieved and/or of what they have done to the
upliftment of Goa and Goans and the world.

But have'nt we realized that some of them may not have been there if it
were not for us, the simple lay men and women, the "sade monis" of Goa?

Ami te ami, kitem komi? (After all, are we any less than these Great Goans?[
Or do you think our grapes are sour? Chol soro kaddya!]). I say emphatically
"No" . Haven't we gone through enduring historical events in Goa like "The
Liberation"/"Invasion" of Goa in 1961, the critical "Opinion Poll" in
sixties? We were there in Goa walking on foot and developing ourselves with
limited resources going through life's aberrations when most others didn’t
have to go through life like we did and progressed exponentially.

And don’t you think we deserve any mention in the Millenium celebrations?
What happened to thousands of Freedom Fighters who gave their lives for our
freedom? But don’t ever mention thousands of smugglers who took the easy way
out and became politicians and have infiltrated the panchayats, the
Legislative Assembly and the Parliament. We went to school and colleges with
the hope of rising to the top only to find out there are millions like us in
every hut and concrete house in Goa and not going anywhere. What is our
future with all those BA/BSc? Now everyone is rich and lakhpoti and even
koroddpati is not the word we use for the rich anymore.

Don't feel belittled when you read about the "The Great Goans of the
Millennium". Don’t we wish we were included in it, but the list would be one
million long. Surely these guys are smart, intelligent and talented. But I
wish some of them were the real "niz" Goenkar. On the other hand Goans would
call every famous Goan their "cousin" when they are famous, but I don’t see
anyone recognizing their "beggar" cousins in Goa.

For me dear Goanneter, you are the Millennium Goenkar even though you will
never make that list. We have to have a "putlo" (statue) of a "Sado Goenkar"
next to the "Bhau-Saheb" Banddodkar statue in Ponnje to reflect our true
recognition of a true "niz" Goenkar, who has really contributed to Goa and
Goans. After all without us, simple minded Goans who would make "them"
special?

Just look at the list. I am sure most of these great men have great family
background. But if an uneducated Goan labourer's son/daughter becomes an
I.I.T. graduate or a Ph.D., man that is something! And today there are quite
a few of those in Goa and in India, without even using any of the
reservations. They should make that list! This NEO-LIST should be something
to admire!

Oh by the way our richest Goan has not made that list yet?. Somewhere in
Silicon Valley?

And who is the poorest Goan alive?

They also serve who only stand and wait!

Silviano Barbosa. Konkanni Bhas Uloi, Konkani Bautto Fuloi!

Do you think they would include the real Great Goan Martyr, "Floriano Vaz "
in that list? Do they know who he is? Floriano may not have been educated or
of high-caste, but his only known achievement is a hero's death from a
deadly bullet as our Konkanni Martyr during the Konkanni Chollvoll. Does he
qualify?

This list should come from all walks of life!(Arts, culture, science, music,
songs, politics, education, journalism, social activism, freedom,
spiritualism, Khell-Tiatro directors like Shempia Miguel, Kuddo Miguel,
RoseFerns, Prince Jacob,(Arent' these great Goans at all? Why not?)
classical Indian music, Goan cuisine, Champion chefs/inventors of Fenni,
Champion chefs/Improvisors of chourissam and sorpotel (The Goan way)etc.

And how about our novelists like Reginaldo Fernandes and Bonaventure
D'Pietro?

They also serve who only stand and wait!

are flooded with mails people don't want.

This is definitely not on. If your message is rejected by mailgroup
moderators, you can take it up with them and not inflict your messages
on people anyway. It is easy to harvest email IDs from mailgroups and
then send them mail -- this practice is usually known as spamming.

If you want to have people receive your mail anyway, the least you can
do is set up your own mailgroup and invite people to join. If they do,
the mails they will then receive will no longer be unsolicited.

One exception here -- I think that when responding to a mail on a
mailgroup, it is okay to cc the person whose message you are responding
to. But best practice is to write to the mailgroup.

I hope people who are currently spamming (that is the kindest word I can
think of) will desist.

Thankfully this riposte is not going to task my mind:
1) Why shouldn't they rush to elevate themselves in their careers? Isn't
everyone doing that all over the world? They don't have the dole to fall
back on or free medical benefits, just opportunities and chances at a half
way decent education which they are grabbing. I wish the young people in my
town of Boothbay whose school grabs all of my house tax had that kind of an
ambition. You should have been lauding these kids who survive brain racking
tests and brutal schedules without the luxury of cars, credit cards and
laptops. How do they address issues like global warming, sustainable
development and alternate fuels if they don't have the kind of education
that the NIO tries to give them?
2) And how do you know my colleagues are 'not doing anything?'
3) What correlation is there between by lenghty (sic) prose and my largesse?
I could be doing both, neither or one or the other.
4) How do you know if I contribute to Goa Sudharop or not? Did you hack into
Paypal?
5) Does giving to Goa Sudharop constitute the only charitable act that a
Goan can undertake? Or the only meaningful one? Really George Pinto I could

6) One watch does not make you a philanthropist who can throw (like a girl)

[Goanet] INCREASED INTERNATIONAL AIR CONNECTIVITY FOR GOA

This is a historic development for Dabolim. The first non-Indian scheduled
international flights. Charter flights have been operating since long
(initiated interestingly by Condor itself). Wish we knew how many
international destinations are/will be served by charter and scheduled
flights combined. Hyderabad Begumpet, a civil enclave like Dabolim, has over
20 foreign destinations. Why is Dabolim lagging behind?

[Goanet] Shirodkar's operation

2006-12-05 Thread Jesus Mario B. Fernandes

Thought this might be useful and interesting.

As I browsing through the Chambers Dictionary (New Edition), I found a
entry, 'Shirodkar's operation' in it which means " 'an operation in which
the neck of the womb is closed with the suture to prevent miscarriage', (N V
Shirodkar, 1900-71, Indian Obstretrician)'".

As the name couldnt have been anything but of Goan ethnicity, perhaps
somebody could tell us more about him, to be included amongst Great Goans,
if the case may be,--without alluding to his roots, low caste or otherwise,
Shastikar or Bardezkar, Warriors or not, or anything that betrays a medieval
mindset, a deeply rooted prejudice that projects narrow outdated ideas about
one's origins.

[Goanet] On Canonizing Goan Saints...

2006-12-05 Thread CARMO DCRUZ
Filomena,

Thanks for enlightening all of us on the issue of connonization in the
Catholic Church. Its high time we have Goan Saints. Venerable Joseph Naik
Vaz of Sancoale and Venerabe Angelo D'Souza of Anjuna who are the first
inline among Goans should be cannnonized as soon as possible and we need
lists and recommendations about who will be next - perhaps Cardinal
Valerian Gracias of Chinichinim/Navelim who rose from the lower castes to
become India's first Cardinal in a caste-conscious Goan Catholic
Society..

Instead of just yak-yaking on Goanet on dis and dat and othe non-significant
issues, I think Goanetters should be focused on the single goal of getting
the first Goan Saint connonized within the next year. There is a lot of
pressure on Pope Benedict these days to canonize non-Europeans esp in view
of the Islam issue, etc. where he even bent towards Mecca form Turkey and
showed his you know what to the Vatican, etc. We need to make the most of
the situation !

Best Regards,

Dr. Carmo D'Cruz

Dear Margaret,
I certainly sympathize with your being a secularist.
I have become not exactly a secularist but someone who
has gone beyond the confines of institutional
religion.
..
Canonizations are a sociological, public, and
political issue, not merely some free fall recognition
that someone is holy.

It requires proven public devotion to someone as a
saint, thus a kind of pressure from below. It is a
legal process that requires the services of a
?Postulator? or canon lawyer who collects data,
evidence, documentation of miracles etc. and presents
all this to the authorities at the Sacred Congregation
for the Causes of the Saints. But the final
application or waiving of these rules and the decision
to canonize someone is by arbitrary decision from
above, by the Pope and the said Congregation.
Those who have been writing on Goanet that the process
of canonization is biased toward making mostly
European saints and that lobbying for Goan candidates
is one way of getting canonized saints are not far
wrong.

... and
asked them what they are going to do to get us a
canonized Goan saint after 500 years of devoted Goan
service to the Church. .

Re: [Goanet] Home Is Where The Heart Is/response to Richard

2006-12-05 Thread Carvalho
Dear Richard,

You are absolutely correct, the original saying is
"home is where the hearth is". Infact, hearth was
generally olde English for home. However, since
hearths have become few and far between, hearth has
been replaced by heart in the saying. The hearth at
one time was considered the heart of the English home.
Hence the interchangeable use of the word hearth and
heart.

Take care and best regards,

[Goanet] The Table in Ribandar

2006-12-05 Thread Cecil Pinto
Helga do Rosario Gomes wrote to Selma:
"From the time you were laid on that table in Ribandar?!!!"

Now I think Helga has misunderstood what Selma originally said. She claimed
to have been delivered on this table in Ribandar, not laid. Eggs get laid,
humans get delivered. Now Santosh's query regarding delivery takes another
view. Could Santosh, considering his age, have delivered Selma's mother of
Selma or did he deliver Selma of her child?

Deliver:
To give birth to: She delivered a baby boy this morning.
To assist (a woman) in giving birth: The doctor delivered her of twins.
To assist or aid in the birth of: The midwife delivered the baby.

The future of Goa depends on the answer to this cryptogram. Did Helga mean
laid? Is Santosh insinuating that he could have delivered Selma or was
there a mid-wife? How does Cornel fit in the picture? Would the delivery
have it have been done more hygienically in Toronto, thus suggesting that
Selma/Selma's mother loves her child less than Roland loves his children in
Toronto?

I have an idea for a Semi-Fiction Documentary with the Table in Ribandar
being central to the plot. Like the Da Vinci Code and the centrality of the
painting of The Last Supper.

Cheers!

Cecil

Very good Madhu.

If Marathi were made popular in the Roman script for the Goan taste,
there would not have been this antagonism between proponents of the

And my school Marathi teacher Mr Nabar (peace be upon him) would not
have had so many frustrations teaching me proper Marathi grammar which
by the time I had mastered, became time to start learning French.

[Goanet] Bhakti to attempt second WGM Norm in National 'A'!

2006-12-05 Thread Goanet Sports
Commonwealth Under 18 Gold Medallist and Woman FIDE Master Bhakti Kulkarni
(ELO 2062) will attempt to secure her second Woman Grandmaster Norm in the
33rd National 'A' Women's Championship to be held in Chennai from the 6th to
the 16th of December. Incidentally, 14 year old Bhakti is the first ever
Goan to play in this prestigious event and the stakes are even higher after
she secured her first WGM norm in the recently concluded Commonwealth Chess
Championship in Mumbai. Bhakti, who also won the Asian Under 14 title in
Teheran earlier this year, will hope to repeat her fine performance and get
her second of the needed three Norms to help her obtain the much coveted
Woman Grandmaster title.

The field is indeed very strong and there are no less than eight WGMs in the
lineup of 33 players. Among them is S. Vijayalakshmi (ELO 2426), last
year's winner Swati Ghate (ELO 2385), Nisha Mohota (ELO 2270), R. Aarthie
(ELO 2228), S. Meenakshi (ELO 2347), Eesha Karavade (ELO 2321), D. Harika
(ELO 2353) and Tania Sachdev (ELO 2383). There will also be strong
participation of Bhakti's contemporaries in this event including WIM and
Asian Under 16 Gold Medallist P. Lakshmi Sahiti (ELO 2136), WFM and Asian
Under 12 Gold Medallist Padmini Rout (ELO 2188) and Commonwealth Under 16
Gold Medallist Pon. N. Krithika (ELO 2031). If Bhakti can finish in the top
6, she will represent the country in many International events in 2007 so
this is a golden opportunity for her.

Bhakti's coach India's only Dronacharya Awardee Raghunandan Gokhale has
expressed quiet confidence about Bhakti's chances. "She has to continue the
form she displayed in the Commonwealth", he stated, adding that "a second
WGM norm is indeed a possibility".

GSCA President Sameer A. Salgaocar and Secretary Suhas Asnodkar have also
wished Bhakti all the success in the upcoming event.

Bonny, I totally agree with you that all help that we can give should
be extended to HIV and AIDS sufferers in Goa irrespective of
background.

A society is only as strong as it's weakest links and our HIV/AIDS
affected brethren and our brethren who are physically and mentally
challenged should hold a special place in our hearts.
I hope that the next year for Goa Sudharop will be the year of the
AIDS affected and the year after that the year of the physically and
mentally challenged.

[Goanet] Landlubbers?

2006-12-05 Thread Philip Thomas
NAVHIND TIMES of Dec 3 had this item in its report about the press
conference of the Rear Admiral of Goa (caps mine).

<"..the erstwhile Portuguese Garrison which included
land of DABOLIM, Major Bunder Jetty, the area at Chicalim where we presently
have the Naval Armament Depot, the Mangor and Alpaqures hills and all were
taken over by the Government of India (since Goa was the Union Territory
then). And this entire Garrison was later handed over to Navy by the
Government of India for the custody and establishment of a Naval Area.["]>

The area covered by Dabolim has been officially put at nearly 1700 acres.
What do all the other areas listed above add up to? Does anybody know? And
while we are on the subject what exactly does the Navy use the port
facilities for? Nobody seems to say anything about the Navy in mormugao or
whatever (except for vague references to exercises with friendly navies
'somewhere off the coast of Goa' etc)

Re: [Goanet] Great Men Of Goa

2006-12-05 Thread Frederick \"FN\" Noronha
An old article (at the risk of repetition) ... based on the book by Dr
Clement Vaz. --FN

http://www.geocities.com/athens/forum/1503/eminent-goans.html
GOANS ARE ALL OVER THE WORLD, DOING ALL KINDS OF THINGS

By Frederick Noronha

Some helped build the steel frame of British colonialism. Others spent
their lives fighting alongside their Black brethren against British
and other foreign rule in East Africa. Some were cardinals, while
others were Free Masons. From the tiny region of Goa came forth
world-class men (and women) of medicine, super- cops, scientists and
sculptors. And more. If you thought Goan achievers were just in a
field or two, then check up their impressive list of achievements.
There are names that pop out from the world of music, the military,
economists, educationists, engineers, and even governors and
ambassadors.

This becomes clear in a recently-published book by octogenarian Dr.
J.Clement Vaz. At 82, and despite living outside Goa for long, Vaz
remains a Goaphile at heart, and tackles the task with keenness.
Fortunately, author Vaz has undertaken this labour of love -- most
books on Goa hardly rake in profits -- at a suitable point of time.
Vaz's life spans colonial and post-colonial Goa. Had he not written
it, many of these personalities would have been unknown to or
forgotten by the generation of youngsters which don't have much
contact with the past and can't read Portuguese either. Vaz has come
up with an impressive listing.

Early on, Goa gained a plethora of big names amidst the Catholic
religious. There were two Cardinals -- Valerian Gracias in Bombay and
Joseph Cordeiro of Pakistan -- and two Apolostic Nuncios. Eight
archbishops of Goan origin have served in Bhopal, Delhi, Calcutta,
Nagpur, and Agra, besides Goa itself. Vaz lists over three dozen
bishops too, the latest being Filipe Nery Ferrao, who was consecrated
auxiliary bishop of Goa in 1994. Later, people from this region went
to excel in many other fields.

Great men of science also have the made-in-Goa stamp on them.

One of India's pioneer of the food-irradiation programme was Dr Norman
Lewis of Goa. Other prominent men of science included medical
practitioner Emidio Afonso, who was also a mini-sculptor, a violinist
or an ingenious mechanic. Just out of his teens, he reconstructed with
the simplest available material a simplified version of Sir J C Bose's
crescograph, an instrument for measuring the sensitivity of plants.
It was a Goan who discovered protozoa, parasites, microbes and viruses
many of which bear the Latin name given by him followed by the name
"de Mello" as the discoverer.
Dr Froilano de Mello (1877-1955) was a research scientist of high
caliber, a successful professor, a literary man, and an eloquent
impromptu speaker. He did remarkable work for improving the health of
the malaria-endemic city of Old Goa by mapping the entire area so as
to discover the source of malaria. By 1927, this work was completed
and over 18,000 wells with stagnant water were uncovered in the jungle
that had grown where Old Goa existed two centuries earlier. He fought
valiant battles against TB and leprosy. He was hailed as one of the
foremost leprologists.
Datta V. Naik (50), known as Kumar to his friends, is a product of St.
Xavier's Mapusa who showed that youngsters given the opportunities in
Goa can even receive a Certificate of Recognition from the US National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Remember the Bunsen burner from your chemistry lab? It was Goan
scientist Agostinho Vincente Lourence (b.1862) who went to Germany to
work under the famous chemist Bunsen. There's a bust of Lourence in
the Lisbon Academy of Science, which stands besides Lavoisier and
others. There's also a bust at the Municipal Garden in Margao. Abbe
Faria's achievements in hypnotism are also too well known.

Goa threw up renowned Indologists and were experts in studying coins.
one such illustrious figure was Damodar Dharmanand Kossambi
(1907-1966).

Goa's supercops include the well-known Julio Francis Ribeiro, later
ambassador to Romania. John Lobo (b.1921) was the Director of India's
Central Bureau of Investigation. He introduced innovative features in
the Bombay police, including its data processing unit, dog-squad,
conviction index bureau and the like. He was Chief Security Liaison
Officer to two prime ministers.
Caejetan Joseph Vincent Miranda of Loutolim was director of the
Anti-Corruption Bureau. "During his scintillating tenure of three
years, the ACB struck terror into the hearts of smugglers, and as a
result of his successful anti-smuggling drive, the government
exchequer was substantially enriched," says Vaz.
Big names from Goa in the military include Air Marshal Terence Joseph
de Sa (b.1928) of Sangolda, Major General Antonio Caetano da Silva
(b.1930), Major Gen. Eustace D'Souza, Lt. Gen. F.T.Dias of Velcao, Lt.
Gen.S.L.Menezes of Sangolda, Lt.Gen Eric Alexander Vas of Saligao, Gen
Sunit Francis Rodrigues of Curtorim, who rose to

[Goanet] Jazzing up 'night life'

2006-12-05 Thread Philip Thomas
One of the standard arguments in the Dabolim debate is the non-use of night
operating hours by airlines. HERALD (Dec 3) had a report headlined "No
takers for Dabolim night operations". NAVHIND TIMES of the same date said
the following: "He also informed that the navy is operating 24 hours and has
upgraded its system'If the civil aviations stretch their operations
during night times than there would be no confusion at the Dabolim airport,'
added Rear Admiral Vadgaokar."

I myself have addressed this issue on goanet (Aug 17) in the following vein:
< Dabolimis supposedly open to night operations for which there are no
takers according to the Navy. This may simply be because scheduled
international flights are disallowed at Dabolim airport though chartered
flights are allowed. Hence only domestic airlines can use Dabolim at night.
Since existing airlines are unwilling to change their schedules for Goa, we
may have to wait for a new airline which is geared specifically to night
flights to operate out of Dabolim. For this to happen, changes may have to
be effected not only in AAI, but also in taxi services and in hotel
check-in/check out times. All this might take time.>

One obvious solution which no one seems to be considering is for the NAVY to
use the night hours (6:30 pm to 6:30 am) for its flight training activities.
What's sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander, right? No
staffing, transport and coordination problems in this option. And many more
hours at the navy's disposal to hone its pilots' Sea Harrier and helicopter
flying skills. A real win-win solution. What say?

[Goanet] looking for family

2006-12-05 Thread Mark & Sandy Felsher
Dear Sir, or Madam, or who ever gets this,

If I have not sent this to the best place could you please forward it to
where you think best.

My name is Mark Felsher and I and my family live in the USA. Six years ago
we adopted a nine year old boy from an orphanage in New Deli. He has been
able to recall a number of events from his early childhood and we have
reason to believe that he may have lived in the Goa - Karnatika area from
the time he was born until he was about five years old.

His mother, father and grandfather all died in about 1996. He does not know
anything about his grandmother or his younger sister. His name is now
Ambrish and he was born in about 1991. He does not think this was his name
when he was growing up and we do not know any other family names, but we do
have a few stories that might be remembered by someone there.

In about 1996 his mother was working in a mining pit, collecting some kind
of small stones from brown dirt (we think they were diamonds), when a
digging machine with rubber tires and a scoop with teeth on the front rolled
into the pit where she was working and struck her from behind and killed
her. There was no driver on the machine. Shortly after that she was cremated
on a wood raft on a river. His mother had also been a cook for the workers
in the mine. At that time the mine had two pits.

Ambrish's father was a taxi driver. He drove a yellow and black taxi, (three
wheels). I do not know if there is a place that would have records of taxi
drivers who died in about 1996 in that area.

Ambrish's mother died first, then his father, then his grandfather. He last
saw his younger sister as the two of them were crossing a busy street and
she fell in front of a car that ran over her leg. She was quickly taken away
in another car.

Here are some other clues that we have;

Ambrish remembers walking to a river where the water tasted salty.

He remembers white (European looking) people living in the area and they
spoke the same language as he did; probably Cannada.

He could walk to his grandparents house in several hours and they lived not
too far from a railroad station.

In about 1995 Ambrish spent some time unconscious, in a hospital, because
his father hit him very hard, on the head, with a metal pipe.

They lived a short walk from the diamond mine.

We have been looking at pictures of the Goa - Karnatika area on the internet
and he has recognized three pictures:

He recognized a park in Mangalore where he went with his grandparents. He
believes they took the train.

He recognized a picture from Hampi and believes his father drove the family
there in the taxi

He recognized a dirt road with businesses, in or near Karwar. He believes
that he, his mother and sister walked there, but only once.

At about the age of five Ambrish got lost on the trains and wound up in
Deli.

If you can think of any way we can use any of these clues to try and find
out who Ambrish's parents were we would be very greatful!

Thank you,

Mark Felsher

Re: [Goanet] Home Is Where The Heart Is (2)

2006-12-05 Thread Roland Francis
Mario,
How about walking the talk?

Instead of "lend my financial and moral support to the local Goans"
by which you mean buying a flat for yourself in Goa for your own
selfish and narrow purposes and not out of some well-meaning plan to
help Goa - how about putting some green into the hands of Goa Sudharop
who can do what you cannot?

I am fed up of Goans talking and talking but when it comes time to
merely write even a small check or even part with 10 dollars, they
suddenly remember they have something better and grander to do for Goa
which translated into Konkani means nothing!

Shame on those Goans.

And Helga, much as I admire your lenghty treatise on how Goa has a
bright future with all your bright colleagues in the NIO and elsewhere
rushing about to elevate themselves in their careers,
I would admire even more your less lenghty but more effective donation
to Goa Sudharop to do what your young colleagues are not doing -
making Goa a better place, one person at a time.

Regards,
Roland.

[Goanet] **LORNA - CHILLIN' FOR GOA**

Folks,
My sincere apologies for the *Ring for Goa* multiple

By way of making it up to you, here's a gorgeous
stunner from way-back-when. Go back almost 35

hot, sultry, Matisse skies, tangy scentsand then,
over the PA system, suddenly this smoky, raw, siren
voice volcanically engulfs the milling thousands - Lorna !!!

Well, here she is again - just last week - resurrected and

[Goanet] WORLD AIDS DAY

What does WORLD AIDS DAY mean to all of us? I have not seen any interesting

those who have been infected and remembering those near and dear ones whom
we have lost.

A treat to those infected in any form by vocal groups, social activists,
politicians, Govt, NGO's , church and expressing love would be remembered
not only by those infected but we would be blessed by the Creator.

We are fortunate to witness this World Aids Day, should it be an
IFFI,cultural event, elections, etc etc we are preparing for it a year in
advance but what about a day like this just comes and goes like a silent
wind. We only get up from our sleep when our kids succumb to such dreadful
diseases because we did not educate them on this disease.

When i read a lot of mudslinging articles on the net , it pains to see that
such efforts could be used for such WORLD AIDS DAYS not for mudslinging but
for building our youth for a better tommorrow.

Everything is expensive
No matter how cheap it is, we still say it is expensive and what more ? That
which is 'FREE'
is also expensive.

Or else, you tell me, how much does it cost just to say 'thank you' or 'please'
or 'sorry' ?

That's typical Goans (includes me).

Re: [Goanet] The mess that is a Goan argument

2006-12-05 Thread Sunith D Velho

Roland Quotes:
" Wherever You Are Home Is Where The Heart Is"

Sunith responds:
Didn't this thread start with how you had finally achieved closure and
were now happy that you chose to settle in Canada? Don't think this
quote is particulalrly appropriate and you are kind of trampling over
your own point.

Maybe a little less watching "Borat" and more thinking before posting
might help with your arguments. A little more thought and you could
even overcome the pettiness your debate is generating into.

Sunith

Roland quotes me and other netters completely out of context(as below):

With all this discussion about living in Toledo and buying flats in
Goa, drinking Canadian beer with shouts of "Canada rocks!", studying
in England and
returning to Goa to make changes - or not (as in the film BORAT) and
accusing people of fleeing from Goa "their own their native land.

They are also surely not interested in hearing little boys exclaim in
wonderment: In France they treat you rudely if you don't speak French.

[Goanet] Numbers Game

2006-12-05 Thread Philip Thomas
There seems to be a numbers game of sorts in connection with the money put
in by the Navy into Dabolim Here is the latest salvo as reported by
NAVHIND TIMES (Dec 3): Meanwhile HERALD of the same date notes: So far so good.

Interestingly just a few months ago I myself heard the hon Rear Admiral on
TV saying that the Navy had sunk Rs 75 THOUSAND crore into Dabolim. On
goanet I had observed at the time that this was way above the Rs 25
THOUSAND crores estimated earlier in a goanet post in late 2004. Now we have
Rs 75 crores and Rs 1000 crores which adds up to, not 75,000, but Rs 1075
crores (only).

How does one explain the disparity in numbers. If we cant get facts right at
Dabolim, how can we expect facts to prevail over pre-conceived notions in
Goa?

Another SFX feast was celebrated in Macau, with the

Great effort by the Goan lads and lasses for keeping
the spirit of Goa alive around the world may it be in
Melbourne or Toronto. This is while the neo

their hands open. Even getting into GMC is a sweat for
