I think people like Bhandare are often conveniently misusing this great list to promote their vicious campaign that openly spews hatred. I would suggest Goanet should make it mandatory for posters to positively identify themselves, where they are based and a phone number. A message without a signature should be automatically rejected. Secondly a blanket ban on comments relating to matters of faith may also be considered. --- Dear Tonybab, What you are suggesting involves at least two facets (1) unduly extra work for the volunteer coordinators and (2) a form of qualified censorship. I suggest that both are not good facets. If you have been following the various India related discussion forums - I am sure that you would have observed the spike in fever just before some election and a spike in fever after that election has not gone in any particular direction. There is a particular commonality of thought which pervades the postings of the hate mongers. The common themes: Sonia this and Sonia that, Rome, Inquisition, Forced conversions, colonialism, Portugal and look how bad the Catholics are. This is not new stuff ...it has been on Goanet since 1996(atleast). First, we had Ashok Chowgule of the VHP(Mumbai branch), then we had Sandeep Heble(Betim Jaycees) and now we have the new breed of sainiks.[You notice that I have not made any reference to amcho Aires. I hope he is happy with his omni-directional Flip-Flopping & Tree-Hopping] There is one set of points which always 'affects' these sainiks: the Caste System, Sati, the virtual elimination of Buddhism from the subcontinent, Devadasis, Human Bondage, Slavery, and the multitude of Wars and Rape that have occurred on the subcontinent. The idea (if sensible folks will read it) is to say to the Bigots ... For Heaven's sake ...ENOUGH!!; We have had enough of hatred among us. We have caste hatred, religious hatred and all kinds of hatred. Enough!! For all the fingers we are pointing towards others ...we have more pointing towards ourselves. It is best to understand that Religion is a private matter leave it alone. And IF you have to discuss it, please be equitable in your discussions. Having said that - I believe that the activities of clerics is not out of bound for discussion. I see no reason why the activities of clerics and other public proponents of religion should not be discussed openly. Sure, one has to be fair to everyone - the clerics as well as the people they affect but a blanket ban would hardly be fair. I have come to notice that certain sainiks have come out of the woodwork around this Goa election. They have raised the same "pet" topics that Ashok Chowgule raised on GoaNet more than a decade ago. These nuevo sainiks have received my stock response. They have reacted as expected ...like Ashok Chowgule did. I have given them the option to look in the mirror. I have NO intention to continue any dialogue with them unless they show me WHERE on (any site) they have initiated or voluntarily supported a posting of the negative aspects of the Caste, Sati etc topics. If they have not ...they are just the quadriennial sainiks who specialise in hate; no point in discussing with them. I invite us to ignore them ...NOT suggest that GoaNet ban them. If the barking of hate is ignored, chances are that they will go bark their hatred somewhere else. As far as telephone numbers are concerned I'd say even at the risk of Crank Calls - it is a good idea jc Nassau, Bahamas 242-328-3900 (has caller ID ...and any number that is 'blocked' is potentially capable of being unblocked) ps: One thing is for sure, IF I was a betting man ... I would never accept the tips from folks like Aires and Parrikar. Boy, they dont know how to predict numbers and yet keep making wild predictions.

Meanwhile over two thousand years ago, Indian classical musicians were busy setting the rules for those American musician's joy. If jazz is improvised music, Indian classical music is jazz! Now that we've discovered who really discovered jazz, it's time to take a good look at the state of jazz in India. The name of India's most popular live jazz venue located in Mumbai, tells the story loud and clear. It started as 'Jazz by the bay', changed to 'Not just jazz by the bay' and should now be called 'Just not jazz by the bay'! Granted, jazz has a niche audience and commercial music rules, but then a few years later the same commercial music that rules, is ruled out while jazz blissfully evolves, embracing all other forms of music along the way. We now have rock-jazz, pop-jazz, funk-jazz, latin-jazz, hip-hop-jazz, indo-jazz... to cut a very long story short, there is a -jazz attached to every genre of music and there will be a -jazz attached ot every genre that comes along. That's how huge jazz is and it should now be spelt jaaz! Jazz, with it's all embracing evolution, is certainly going to be the global sound of music just as everything else gets globalised. Why do I play jazz when I could easily make millions if I learnt to sing pop through my nose? It's because jazz allows me to be myself as opposed to pop that wants me to be Madonna. I'd rather be myself than strut onstage wearing conical jocks. In fact, not very long ago a leading music company in India released a male indi-pop star's album titled 'Mai bhi Madonna' with the man dressed in drag on the album cover. Jazz suddenly began to make sense to me after all. I chose to play bass as I felt it was the coolest sound of music. Rhythm, melody and harmony makes music and the bassplayer is the important link between the three. I may not be upfront or in the spotlight all the time like the singer and soloist in the band but I am certainly right behind the song all the way. It's been a long exciting journey into jazz for me, I made a lot of friends as a musician and a whole lot of enemies, I did meet a lot of people. If it wasn't for my music I would have been a lighthouse keeper on Andaman island or what's worse, I would have been a doctor, lawyer or engineer. Yes, music helped me get out of my introverted shell and face the world with a song. I currently work on two resident contracts at the JW Marriott hotel with my indo-jazz fusion ensemble called 'The Brown Indian Band' for obvious reasons and at night at the Taj Lands End hotel with my band called 'The Bassman's Band' for some strange reason. I often take time off from these two gigs to perform at concerts and corporate events all over India and internationally. One of the highlights of my career so far, has been performing internationally on the world renowned Hennessy XO jazz tour. The band, the only one from India selected for this tour, was called 'Soul Yatra' and was led by the amazingly talented keyboard wizard Merlin D'Souza. My journey into jazz has been fun and my best is always yet to come. To give back to the music that gave me so much, I setup an organisation in Goa called 'Jazz Goa' that can be reviewed at http://www.jazzgoa.com After close to three decades of playing jazz with just about every jazz musician in the country, I would have loved to be called the Godfather of Indian jazz. The position has been filled I believe, so I'll settle for Godson of Indian jazz! Checkout some of my bands and music at my website http://www.jazzyatra.com No need to miss a message. But the opening sentence refers to all kinds of "haphazard construction activities in the capital city". Recently a similar report appeared in a Bangalore paper. The offenders are both government agencies and private parties. It is one of the most effective mechanisms used to influence thought in the 21st century. Hollywood for instance has been remarkable in its ability to shape public opinion be it on gay rights, racial issues, historical perspectives or political activities. Hollywood, is an industry that is as feared by politicians as the plague and as courted as an unrequiting lover. It is imperative that film and its distribution are treated with the utmost objectivity and discipline. I don't know what role Bollywood and its other counterparts, play in shaping public opinion, but it is time that they took on more meaningful subjects such as embracing the concept of nationhood, overcoming the caste and communal divide, population, etc, rather than just frivolous, song and dance potboilers. selma Pinpoint customers who are looking for what you sell. http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/

Any NRI with a valid Indian passport can file an RTI application with the Public Information Officer (PIO) with the Indian Embassy by paying a fee of 24 cents. The payment can be made through a demand draft or a cheque. The Embassy will automatically transfer the application to the relevant department in India within five days if the information requested does not pertain to the Embassy itself. Under the RTI Act, the public authority must provide the information within 35 days. This was stated by information and culture attaché of Indian embassy at Washington DC, K A Georgekutty, in reply to a query posted by Somu Kumar of a US-based organisation called AID-India. The statement has come as a boon for expatriate Indians who own some property back home and are worried about land sharks gobbling up their precious landholding. "This is good news for NRIs who would want to check the credentials of specific developmental projects undertaken by the Gujarat government, before donating funds to them. Besides, one can always check the authenticity of NGOs who come to the US asking for funds - it can be ascertained, under RTI, whether it is a listed NGO. Besides an NRI businessman can use RTI to check government policies to know whether it is favourable investing in the state," said a software entrepreneur in the US, Pritesh Bhavsar. Anju Musafir, an educationist based in Ahmedabad, was the first to file an application with the PIO of the Indian ministry of external affairs on July 19, 2006 to seek information on denial of visa by an Indian Embassy in Paris to French national Benjamin M. [Goanet] Stereotyping 'pao wallahs' in the U.S.

Ignorance is the fertile soil on which prejudice grows. A nice artilce on Disney and Ageism below + 2 Qs: 1) How does the world stereotype 'pao wallahs' resident in the U.S.? 2) Are U.S. based 'maka paos' or 'macs', victims or beneficiaries of the brand halo called AMERICA? The ageism note: By Tim Henderson "Old people," said the Xer woman waiting ahead of me in a recent and interminable airport security queue. A roll of the eyes finished her scornful take on the senior gent being thoroughly questioned by TSA staff. I disagree with her sentiment, but maybe she grew up watching Disney flicks. Seems a study from Brigham Young U smarties uncovered senior stereotypes among Disney's animated characters. Of 90 senior characters in 34 Disney movies, BYU researchers say, 58% are positive. But 42% are negative portrayals, including anger, senility, missing teeth, creaking voices and hunched postures. Most were villains. BYU researchers worry that it's often impressionable youngsters viewing the flicks. Others, including me, have a more restrained response. That seniors are stereotyped by pop culture is little surprise. So too are many others, including caveman guys, dumb blondes, smart-aleck kids, shiftless repairmen, condescending store clerks and dimwitted bosses. Still, I'm not inclined to say those stereotypes or the seniors in Snow White and Cinderella are forever twisting viewers' brains. Responsible companies and compassionate consumers know the real villain is ageism. Like all prejudice, it finds fertile ground in ignorance. It's real-life, intergenerational activities like Disney grandparenting vacations, senior and Millennial tutors and, later in life, mixing it up in the workplace and on college campuses that destroy or affirm stereotypes. Hopefully, it's the former, positive impressions that consumers draw on for a lifetime.

[Goanet] Reverse Konkani-isms and new verbs

Reverse Konkani-isms are rarely given the attention they deserve because this forum is largely made up of English speaking people. A reverse Konkani-ism occurs when a English speaking (thinking) person literally translates into Konkani when speaking. For example yesterday I had phoned a journalist friend of mine a couple of times, on his mobile, but got no response. Later in the evening he phones me and asks in his accented Konkani, "Tuvem mhaka don favti apoiloi?" Technically speaking it does translate as "You called me twice" but "apoi" is "call" as in call and not as in phone call. The phrase sounds absurd to a Konkani speaker. Also we must address the new words that are becoming part of our vocabulary. "Missed call" for example, as a verb. "Did you missed call me?" "Why don't you just missed call me at about 7 and I will come to the park" This word/phrase is being increasingly used by South Asian cellphone-savvy youth and will soon be included in the English dictionary if popular usage is the criteria. Cheers! Cecil ===

Catholic Goan village feasts in the name of a European saint (who ironically is hardly remembered in empty European churches) are not the only mindless events, there are other groups who feel the need to have public displays of religion in Goa at odd hours violating noise pollution rules. There is another issue which is the amount of money wasted on these events but I suppose it is everyone's right to waste their own money. However, imagine instead of village feasts and religious events, if the church/temple/mosque were to organize programs on: Job fairs Employment skills Entrepreneurial initiatives Civic awareness Environmental awareness Conservation Wildlife protection Financial literacy classes Money management Art & music fairs Inter-religious celebrations Elder care and children issues Anti-corruption drives Anti-caste programs Cross-cultural, multi-cultural events Political activism Consumer rights And so on... What if Goan expat organizations and associations did some of the above instead of their mindless events and "fun" conventions to amuse the lowest common denominator. Oh well... Goans by and large have chosen by their actions to be a backward group, their verbal protestations notwithstanding. Regards, George

Consisting of some 20 items, it reportedly includes things like laying of underground electric cables, hot mixing of roads, a sewerage treatment plant, two football grounds, a community hall, an indoor stadium, two health centers, two markets, three overbridges etc etc. The first question that arises is: how does all this gel with the new Regional Plan which is supposedly in the works (after the original one was scuppered by the redoubtable Mummy's own whistle blowing). This is because presumably some land would have to be identified for the various purposes. Then there is the question of need. What purpose would the markets serve? Would the community hall be for one community or all of them? What if all 40 constituencies asked for football grounds and stadia? Is there a body which would take a wholistic view of these requirements? Then there are the missing items (though these may well be in the complete list). What about pay toilets, garbage disposal sites etc. "The Santa Cruz MLA has demanded non-interference .. in the development works of the constituency" citing the previous experience with the obstructive Town & Country Minister. Is this any way to run a progressive government, for Goa's sake?

In other words model cities are identified for particular functions instead of holding up cities as all-in-one models. For international airports (which the article begins with) it cites Berne and Munich. Domestic airports are not explicitly considered. For crime rates the models were Tokyo and Kyoto. State education quality (as also health care quality) was considered best in Zurich and Helsinki. Bangalore was said to be almost on par with top cities as far as telecom connectivity went. On tolerance the jury was out. "While creating transport infrastructure they haven't taken into account the density of traffic." This comment has to be seen in conjunction with the rating on "access to nature and key environmental issues". "At least 10 cities have made parks and trees a priority in their planning." What I observed was that Bangalore arterial roads are narrower than they need to be considering the high traffic density mentioned above. Vehicles are not only bumper to bumper but cheek by jowl (within 1 foot of each other at intersections). A real recipe for road rage although, to be fair, I scarcely saw any squabbling out in the open by irate drivers. Vast swathes of land have however been walled off, giving the impression that traffic flows in canyons! The areas behind these walls (much of it under the military) may no doubt be serene and green. But who decides on Bangalore's land use and on appropriation of land for the public good? Perhaps a highly sensitive question!

You did not have an answer. Neither could you give me three to five (or even one) example of KC doing the bidding of the Vatican contrary to the interest of Catholic Americans or America. Do you think American Catholics are unable on their own to evaluate and articulate morality? The efforts of KC to financially and socially help poor Catholics are very commendable. It is very likely you (and other ungrateful and perennial Church-bashers on Goanet) were the beneficiary of the kindness and sacrifices of the KC and the Catholic Church during your upbringing and in time of crises. Your string of anti-Catholic posts, as an ex-Catholic and an atheist, are an insensitive, offensive claptrap. You are utilizing your language skills and your self-acclaimed morality to display a showy, insincere empty talk. Your contemptible, crude and deceptive attacks, on the religion you divorced yourself from, are intended only to get an applause or notice. Don't you have any shame? Most atheists I know have much higher morals and decency standards. Regards, GL Kevin Saldanha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Read the book 'Parish Priest', Gilbert. In Tourism for example, a tourist taxi driver has to get a license, in Agriculture there are issues of zoning, etc. The entire process is transaction based and so each transaction can involve a kickback. In Goa, corruption has been "elevated" to new levels where getting a Govt. Job or promotion involves kickbacks. Of course, corruption is not unique to Goa, no place in the world seems to be corruption-free. Some places the corruption is cleverly hidden from public view, unlike Goa where it is blatant for all to see as Ministers flash their ill-gotten wealth. Regards, George

While Fr Sylvester was sitting with Valerian, Br Joyston and Br John were sitting with Mukund. As they were waiting for the doctor 3-4 local Hindu leaders led by Ramanna Shetty came and caught Fr Sylvester by his collar. Without giving any chance to speak, they pulled him down the stairs and pushed him on the ground, and then kicked and assaulted him severely, alleging that the priest was indulging in conversion activities in the area.. When Valerian tried to intervene and asked them not to assault a priest, they left the priest and assaulted Valerian. As a result Valerian sustained injuries and lost a few of his teeth. On the other hand both Br Joyston and John who tried to save the priest were also assaulted along with the cook. http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=34968&n_tit=Kundapur%3A+Fr+Sylvester+Pereira+Assaulted+by+Ramanna+Shetty

Mindless spending has become a social norm in Goa. Money which one can ill afford is spent on celebrating everything from birth to death and other events not worth celebrating, betwixt the two. I firmly believe this spending is impoverishing Goans, not just materially but intellectually. Every weekend, there are parties to attend. When do Goans spend time rejuvenating their mental faculties? When is time spent, reading or taking kids out to engage in activities that might encourage them to think? Instead, an inordinate amount of time is spent both by adults and children on attending birday parties, festas, anniversaries, Lions Club meetings, prayer meetings, weddings, ross ceremonies, ladains, funerals, etc and not necessarily in that order. Imagine if all that money and time was put to more productive use, such as books, saving for a good education or an educational trip abroad. selma Pinpoint customers who are looking for what you sell. http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/

Of all the coveted portfolios those relating to HOME,(which gets the entire Police administration under this portfolio ) usually retained by the CM; FINANCE ( nothing moves in the development or non development areas if the file - work order or sanctioning the finances is not cleared ) the TCP (you get change of land use for a consideration with this you can fill both the coffers of the Party the MLA's including those in the Opposition if it happens to be in their assembly constituency) PWD ( you could build projects and ensure that it does not give way until your term ends rest (85% of the money is siphoned -- how does this happen visit Miramar Campal to see the storm drains construction . Water is precious so is the PWD which takes care of the distribution and IRRIGATION portfoliowhich provide the resources for water. The Tillari project is a case in point. TOURISM -- though you need not sell Goa's tourism potential any longer -- theres a lot of money and no questions asked and a jaunt or two overseas at trade marts etc; EDUCATION portfolio has suddenly gained importance with the "Sarv Shikshan Abhiyan " which provides central funds for ensuring universalisation of education. POWER portfolio remember - you cant run anything without power (electricity) INDUSTRY means nothing if power and water supply are not assured. IT -- the parks are all important and there is a lot of money SPORTS portfolio is the cricket stadium planned in North Goa is given the green signal -- there will be a flush of funds HEALTH -- is the in thing -- with speciality facilities provided by the Government and upgradation of health centres and Mediclaim or Universal Mediclaim skim and district Hospitals these are can make it a lucrative portfolio, TRANSPORT what with the squabbles of the tourist taxis aand the unreliable public transport and licences etc AGRICULTURE is also important for there has been a uptrend in the allocation for Horticulture etc under various schemes. So who should get what? is the question? and the answer on every Minister's lip is WHY NOT ME? Therefore when a Minister cries in the name of development of his constituency one needs to read -- filling the party and coffers of one self. Incidentally a debate was raging in Panaji on whether administering insulin drips to Ms Victoria Fernandes MLA Santa Cruz still recuperating at the Vintage Hospital amounts to breaking the hunger strike or not? she seems determined to make the Hospital her better destination until the flutter of allotment of portfolios is out. With this those on the sidelines may cook up and be ready to serve the NEXT GOVERNMENT TO THE PEOPLE OF GOA. Meanwhile a hitch has developed with the House being summoned on the 16th July to pass the cruicial Budget. While the questions are to be prepared and kept ready for the concerned Ministers who are expected to provide the replies -- it takes 15 days for this excercise while the Legislative Secretariat needs atleast five days to prepare for the first days sitting. In these circumstances the first week of the Assembly session may not be conducive for any starred or unstarred question hour. Hence Goans await to see what unfurls tonight or early tommorrow noon. The latest tip off is that Mr Aleixo Sequeira may be given the Town and Country Planning portfolio as a consensus candidate--- for the records Mr Sequeira a relative of Commissioner of NRI Affairs is in the liquor industry unlike Mr Ravi Sitaram Naik -- the 1990 "saint of (land) conversions" and Mr Digambar Kamat admittedely a realtor. I am a film actor/writer living in Vermont USA, but born in Britain. Traveling India extensively in the late 1980s I played a part in a Bollywood movie filmed in Panjim in late 1988/ early 1989. I didn't get what the movie was called but the plot revolved around a boy from Madras marrying a girl from Goa (or the other way round?) -- anyway the wedding scenes took place in front of a large white church in Panjim. It was filmed in Hindi, even though we westerners were told to speak English. The idea for westerners at the ceremony was to suggest the family hosting the wedding was well-off and had foreign friends. I would be delighted to find out what the movie was called and try to find a copy. Good health to you, Alan K. Moore -- Dear Alan, Good health to you too. All the best in your search. If you can give me the name of some local contacts associated with the movie I could track them down and find out the name of the movie. As an amateur sociologist though I am more interested in the statement you made, "The idea for westerners at the ceremony was to suggest the family hosting the wedding was well-off and had foreign friends." Probably true of a Bollywood movie, specially of the 1980s. In fact 2 years back there was a feature article in the Mumbai newspapers about firms that hired out foreigner 'guests' for parties and weddings to make it appear that the host moved in top circles. A typical B-grade Bollywood movie watcher probably does think that white skins are in some way superior, or at least richer. In Goa though thanks to many more years of foreign occupation and closer interaction we don't have that sort of attitude towards foreigners. In fact after the flower power children made complete fools of themselves stoned on our beaches we started looking on the white man as being slightly cracked, in a manner of speaking. Now too the charter trash tourists we attract are so intellectually and culturally impoverished that we have a generic contempt for most foreigner tourists and indulge them only because thanks to the currency advantage they have a bit of spending money. In South Goa though some people from the hotel industry still behave like B-Grade Bollywood movie watchers. In North Goa we saw and measured up cheap foreigner tourists long back and treat them no different from others. There are of course rare exceptions. Cheers! Cecil =

Peter and Paul. This annual ceremony sees the Pope investing with the Pallium those who have been appointed Metropolitan Archbishops in the previous 12 months. It may be recalled that the Archbishop of Goa became a Metropolitan when the neighbouring diocese of Sindhudurg was made a suffragan of Goa, November last year. Goa had indeed been a Metropolitan Archdiocese since its foundation in 1557 till 1976, when its last suffragans - Macau and Timor - were detached from it. The Pallium, worn by the Pope and by Metropolitan Archbishops over their vestments, on formal religious ceremonies, is made of white wool and symbolizes the sheep that is carried on the shoulders of the Good Shepherd (Jesus Christ). It also symbolizes the Pope's concession of authority and communion to heads of major local Churches. Fifty one Metropolitans from all over the world will receive the Pallium this year, among whom Archbishops Oswald Gracias of Bombay, Albert D'Souza of Agra, Leo Cornelio of Bhopal and Dominic Lumon of Imphal (Manipur). During his stay in Rome, Abp. Ferrao will also meet Cardinal Ivan Dias, Abp. Blasco Collaco and Goan priests, nuns and lay people living in that city. Before returning to Goa on July 10, he will spend a few days with family members living in Germany. Fr. J. Loiola Pereira Director, D.C.S.C.M. Archbishop's House, Panjim June 27, 2007
[Goanet] On the role of film in branding a place

As I see it, what the Protugese did or did not do centuries ago is of little relevance to the growth and development needs of modern day Goa. Those responsible for the project failed, created a PR disaster and even also lost a branding opportunity. A Reader's Digest version of necessary conditions for a place to successfully brand itself: 1) Private industry and the government need to be on the same page. 2) Media needs to be brought on board. 3) The message associated with the place needs to be constantly refreshed. This condensed news item is a nice example of how film has tremendous potential to alter the brand of a place. CARTAGENA, Colombia (BRANDFlash) -- One need look no further than Colombia or New Zealand to understand how motion pictures have become the most potent marketing force for a country brand. Global perceptions of both nations have been affected in opposite ways by recent Hollywood fare such as "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "Lord of the Rings." And other countries are moving more seriously into moviemaking as a brand-enhancing marketing strategy. For instance, Dubai has launched an entire studio city designed to lure the world's filmmakers to a different view of the Middle East. --- "Frederick [FN] Noron ha * ??? ?? ?? ???" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I believe in free expression... but I also believe > there are limits to it. > The problem with the Deo-Parrikar-BJP VCD in Goa > wasn't whether it was > factual or otherwise, but that it sought to make > religious conflict and > strife the focus of a 21st century State in a > secular country. --- Film, like news media, has a very important role to play in a secular state. I don't know what role Bollywood and its other counterparts, play in shaping public opinion, but it is time that they took on more meaningful subjects such as embracing the concept of nationhood, overcoming the caste and communal divide, population, etc, rather than just frivolous, song and dance potboilers. selma
[Goanet] THE CLERGY AND POLITICS.

Averthanus L. D'Souza. Because of the rather large population of Catholics in Goa - approx. 30% - the local political dynamics take on a special flavour. There is supposedly a "Catholic vote bank" which the major political parties take into consideration when they formulate their policies and when they plan their election strategies. While it is true that a large proportion of the electorate is composed of Catholics, it is incorrect to assume that the Catholics constitute a "vote bank."This is quite evident from the fact that Catholics are members of (or support) a variety of political parties. Apart from the major national parties, there are several small "local" parties (sometimes referred to as "regional" parties) which have enjoyed the support of the Catholics. In the recent past, it became evident that the Congress Party became complacent about the so-called "Catholic vote," assuming that the Catholics would vote Congress because of its secular credentials. In contrast, the BJP (the Bharatiya Janata Party) went out of its way to project its own so-called "secular" image by giving prominent positions to Catholics. In order to promote the myth that the Catholics supported the BJP because of its "secular" character, the BJP used subterfuges and tricks to attract the support of Catholics. At the time of the destruction of the Babri Masjid mosque in Ayodhya, the BJP went to the extent of organizing a march starting from the island of Divar which was led by a prominent, senior Catholic legal luminary. This Senior Advocate later denounced the BJP and made a public announcement that he was misinformed about the real purpose of the march, and that he was duped into believing that it was a march to commemorate Goa's freedom. He went on record to state that if he had been told that the march was intended to culminate in the demolishing of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, he would never have consented to participate in it.On another occasion, a Catholic Member of the Legislative Assembly was projected as being a member of the BJP. When the BJP government was in a crisis, his signature was forged on an application form asking for primary membership of the Party. When this MLA publicly declared that he had no truck with the BJP, he was physically removed from the Assembly during one of its sessions. In the midst of all these political manoeuvrings the clergy of Goa (as also of other Dioceses) are faced with some difficult choices when it comes to advising their parishioners about making judicious political choices. There is a clear distinction between political principles which are adopted by the different Political Parties and practical politics as exercised by these parties. The Ecclesiastical authorities are very careful to issue guidelines of an "ethical" nature which will assist the ordinary Catholic to understand the issues which are at stake. At no point, and under no circumstance does the Church exhort its faithful to choose any one particular party over another; or one particular candidate over another. The freedom of conscience of the Catholic citizen is always scrupulously respected. The guidelines issued are only meant to be "guidelines" - not directives. It happens, only too frequently, that individual Catholics look to their pastors for advice on the way that they should cast their vote. The Ecclesiastical authorities are very explicit that in these circumstances, the priests should exercise extreme caution so as not to influence the lay Catholics towards one political party or another. As pastors, they are expected to offer ethical guidance - not political directives. In spite of this, Goa has seen some of the clergy openly canvassing for a particular candidate or for a particular political party. There are even reports that these priests (mis)use the pulpit to air their own personal political preferences.Such behaviour can only harm the unity of the Catholic community and divide the parishioners along political lines The primary role of a pastor is to foster communal harmony and to unite the people on the basis of basic ethical values. A priest should be seen - first and foremost - as a "pastor" rather than as a political or social scientist. The question which has arisen, and which is agitating many Catholics is whether a priest should actively accompany a candidate during his house to house visits to canvass sup

I have no desire in targeting "residents in America" since I am one myself. This is the first time I came across in last 28 years that Kuwait Airways is threatening AIR-INDIA and INDIAN AIRLINES during summer peak hoildays season in demand of more flights to India which is rediculus and shameful. Kuwait Airways should have raised this issue during off-season and serve notices to Air India and Indian Airlines atleast 6 months in advance. During this 6 months if both countries fail to solve the contentious issue amicably then all our Indian summer passengers could have grace period to choose their airlines of choice for their holidays without any inconvience caused to them. Kuwait Airways have 30 flights a week to India. In addition, Jazeera Airways is flying daily to India and whatelse they want more? Air India and Indian Airlines don't have a daily flight from India to Kuwait, instead opened the doors to Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways to operate their daily flights to India. Out of the 600,000 Indians in Kuwait a major share of air-traffic have been controlled by Kuwait Airways compared to any other airlines in the world. Lions club,PETA, greenpeace etc as well as many local ones. Goans or for that matter no community can be termed backward for celebrating feasts and jatras One can always appeal to and wish that the more well off people who contribute generously to a "havan program" where lakhs of rupees worth of ghee and sandalwood is burnt or golden domes are erected on top of temples would show the same generosity when it comes to civic causes like providing education and health for the poor C A Bhandare Pinpoint customers who are looking for what you sell. http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/

The person is so obviously bright, and well informed. The comparison with Macao ends there: because Bhandare is sensitive, to the point that i feel some of the pain he/she appears to know, even when i disagree with the arguement proferred. There is a certain feminine touch to the plaintiveness that i would be hard pressed to display or mimic. Sr. Colaco scares the lights out me : i know where he comes from, and i dont want to be there. His is a sad world, one he shares with just himself. One could mention professional help, and it's possibly not too late for help, but water tends to swirl under a bridge --- I would ask Ms/Mr. Bhandare to forego controversy and resort to private conversation with us, after a stink - bomb to the Pearl River delta. eric.
[Goanet] Attacks on Christians in India: An Analysis
WWW.GOANET.ORG *** A N N O U N C E M E N T Launching Goanet-sports - Dedicated to Sports in Goa and Goans in Sports Get your free subscription at: http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-sports-goanet.org Hindustan Times June 27, 2007 A HEAVY CROSS TO BEAR by Harsh Mander Gusts of hot winds have scorched India's hills, plains, valleys and forests. These winds are of hatred manufactured systematically against bitterly demonised communities. The campaigns of hate that target the populous Muslim community are better known than those mounted against the tiny Christian minority who peacefully inhabit most corners of this diverse land. The attacks on Christians, unlike in Hindu-Muslim riots, very rarely involve mass clashes between people of Christian and non-Christian faiths. Instead, the intimidation takes mainly three other forms. The first is of violent assaults on Christian priests, rape of nuns of numerous denominations, destruction and desecration of churches and chapels, and burning of Bibles. These have recurred with growing frenzy since 1997-98, when a priest was paraded naked in Dumka, and nuns were raped in Jhabua and Mayurbhan. In the same district, a priest was murdered in 1999. Churches were destroyed in the Dangs in Gujarat in 1998. India's then Home Minister LK Advani admitted in Parliament that there were 400 attacks on Christian priests, nuns and churches between 1998 and 2000. These attacks have continued unabated in the new century and recently spread to cities. The intensity of these attacks may be gauged by the fact that in the month of May 2007 alone, physical attacks on priests were reported from locations in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Kerala, Orissa, Maharashtra, Chhatisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. There was a common pattern, of armed mobs of Hindutva activists thrashing the priests, often in front of their families, sometimes proudly before the cameras of invited television channels, accusing them of propagating a 'foreign' religion by fraud, insulting the Hindu faith and demanding that they are permanently expelled. The police, on occasion, accompanied the mobs, but rarely restrained or registered complaints against the attackers. Instead, at times, it arrested the priests. A second form of intimidation is when converts themselves are attacked. A people's tribunal convened by Angana Chatterji and Mihir Desai painstakingly tracks the frightening sequence of such recent attacks for the state of Orissa alone. Their long and chilling litany includes: in 1999, 157 Christian homes were set ablaze in Ranalai village, and three people suffered gunshot wounds; in 2003, seven women converts and a pastor were forcibly tonsured in Kilipal village, and a socio-economic boycott imposed on them; 15 homes were burnt in 2005 in Gandhavati village, and so on. The third strategy for intimidation is of mobilising large masses for 're-conversion' ghar wapsi ceremonies, mainly in tribal regions, in which thousands of alleged Christian converts are welcomed 'home' to Hinduism. Dilipsingh Judeo, BJP leader (caught receiving bribes in a television sting) who led the campaign with vicious speeches goading violence against converts, claimed in 1999 that by then 1,65,000 persons were reconverted. But all such claims are highly exaggerated, because independent investigations confirm that the majority of those who are bundled for these rallies are not converts to start with. Also most tribal people were not Hindus in the first place, but animists who worship the wind, forests, hills and animals that inhabit their world. The Sangh propaganda is fuelling the attacks on Christians. These attacks are justified by the Sangh and its supporters as righteous expressions of mass popular resistance by an enraged Hindu majority against allegedly anti-national machinations of Christian missionaries. It is claimed that these missionaries coerce and bribe hapless dispossessed tribal people and Dalits with their foreign funded educational and health services, into the 'foreign' Christian faith. At its most extravagant, the missionaries are depicted as instruments of the CIA and the Pope with the mission to evangelise all of India and reduce Hindus to a minority. Sangh propaganda graphically depicts this alleged clash of patriots with traitors in pamphlets, posters and more recently CDs, through emotive images such as of the cross being triumphantly pierced by a trishul or trident and dripping with blood, or comparing the destruction of churches with Ram's final assault on the demon Ravana. These claims find a sympathetic echo among many midd

I have noticed that you don't like criticism in what you write although you should be thankful for that, cause atleast you would know that there are people who read your articles if not, umtea kolsear udok, isnt it? All your wisdom is wasted only on the computer? Well maybe you must be getting lots of private mails praising you for your writings, than that is good too. I don't know why you don't like catholicism, yet you say you are a catholic. There is are verses in the bible which says Do not Judge, yet you are using all your energies in Judging others. Check Mathew 7:1-2 1"Stop judging, that you may not be judged. 2 For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. Luke 6:37 "Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. James 4:12; There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save or to destroy. Who then are you to judge your neighbor? Cheers Jerry Fernandes

Re my point above, do you see the link "to preach about love" that you make in your post and can you recall any priest taking a stance against caste racism in recent times? I'd be delighted to know! Cornel DaCosta Percival Decosta wrote: There is so much hue and cry regarding the Prayer Service held at S. Jose De Areal. I can't imagine why some People and the Catholic Church has politized this Issue. & U know what? I wish the Archdiocese can do something to advise our Priest to preach love and not hatred. To Love your enemies and not hate your Enemies, as not to use the pulpit to address an pulpit deceitfully. Re: S. Jose de Areal Incident: A Clarification from the Archdiocese (George Pinto)
[Goanet] Religious Postings - Reply to Kamlaksh and Bhandare

Hindus can call Kali Mata (the human blood drinker) a goddess, and have a public holiday in Bengal; why did Parrikar pick on Christian HOLY day? Kamlaksh will be correct to put the wrong right and stick to the point, HOW & WHY THIS DEBATE STARTED in the first place. And, Bhandare will do us a favour and confess that there is NO hypocrisy regarding St Francis Xavier and paedophilia in the Catholic Community. 1. St Francis Xavier did not kill any human - the military during his time did, just like Hitler who did not kill any body, the Germans did (Hitler was Austrian), just like Poonam Devi (Bandit Queen) did not kill any body. St Francis like Rama is Innocent of killing Mythical Ravana or people in Goa, their associates did. 2. Paedophilia exists, it is not hypocrisy. FINALLY, LET ME SAY THAT STOPPING GOOD FRIDAY HOLIDAY IS NOT THE ACT OF GOOD PEOPLE. ED. - kamlaksh is correct that we need to focus on issues related to goa and I respect his decision not to post any thing related to religion but I must tell him that bigotry and falsehood flourishes precisely because good people do nothing regards C A Bhandare
