B,
Thank you for your suggestion.
Whether you understand it or not, you are the last person the moderators will
listen to. The reason being, you are unable to see the offensiveness of your
own posts. In addition, you have a history of being unwilling to answer simple
questions. When other Goanetters return the favour, you start crying for rules.

Do you now see how this is very very different from discussing ideas?

The short answer is no.
As far as I am concerned, more rules only serve to stifle discussions.
Discussions, IMHO, lead to ideas.

XAVIER'S NEWS FEATURES E-SERVICE (XNFES)

What you do is what defines you.

The third two-day Commerce Fest ARENA, organized by the Department of
Commerce of St. Xavier's College, is all set to take off on 5th
December, 2007, in the College Campus. Arena 2007-2008 has as its
central theme, What you do is what defines you. The main purpose
of the fest is to inculcate a spirit of teamwork, enthusiasm and
competition amongst Commerce students in order to prepare them to
face the dynamic corporate environment.

The first competition will be the NUMERO UNO. In today's fast paced,
aggressive corporate world, every company vies to be the best in its
field. However, to succeed in business, one needs intelligence and a
good personality to back it up. Hence, this event is a test of the
participants' skills to achieve success. Numero Uno goes along the
lines of the CAT examination. WIZARD OF ADS gives the participants a
platform to showcase their skills in the field of
advertising. Creativity and innovative thinking are the prime
requirements for success. In NOUVELLE AVENTURE participants have to
conceptualize, present and convince a panel of venture capitalists
about an innovative business idea for a product or a serivce that
wuold be economically and practically viable.

BRAIN DRAIN is a straight forward even testing knowledge on various
commerce related aspects ranging from general knowledge to CEO to
mergers. It consists of two round, an initial eliminatory written
round followed by a three tiered finale. NEWSPAPER puts the
participants in the drivers' seat allowing them to construct an ideal
newspaper of their choice keeping in mind current events, good taste
and strong commercial skills. PRINT AD tests the participants'
capability to market a product and to make a favourable and lasting
impression on the judge. MODEL MAKING is a competition based on the
Boston Consultancy Group Matrix. The main aim of this event is to
conceptualize the given theory. COAT OF ARMS is an event which
provides a platform for demonstrating the requirements for success
through the designing of a logo. A logo is a form of communication
and companies are often recognized more by their logo, than by their
name. STOCK SHOCK is based on the traditional trading scenario of
the stock market. This provides an opportunity t o the participants
to prove themselves in share trading.

The overall winners of ARENA 2006-2007, last year were St. Aloysius
College, Mangalore. The College wishes to expose students to higher
levels of competition and help them realize what is expected of their
performance in relation to modern day trade commerce. This indeed
can be the foundation for students to scale greater heights in future.

Students pledge to fight unitedly against SEZs
BY HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, NOV 30 – Close to 200 college-going students marched the
streets of Panjim Friday afternoon shouting slogans against SEZs and
later pledged to fight unitedly against the setting up of the zones.
The rally organised under the banner of Youth For Goa took off from
the Panjim Bus Stand and after a one-hour march culminated at the Azad
Maidan where YFG Convenor Malisa Simoes and other students spoke.
Simoes, who pelted out the ill-effects of the zones, appealed to the
State Government to scrap all SEZs, including the two notified ones.
Durgadas Kamath of All Goa Students Forum, Clifton Campos of Saraswat
College and Geeta Joshi also chided the Government on SEZs.
They all reiterated in unison that the Government was riding piggy
back on them to sell Goa in the name of employment to youth.
Simoes' speech was keenly heard by ex-Cortalim MLA Matanhy Saldanha,
who is strongly opposing the SEZs with the support of the BJP.
Saldanha was seen standing at the gate of the Azad Maidan close to
Café Prakash.
Advocate Aires Rodrigues and Soter D'Souza, who like Matanhy are
strong opponents of SEZs, also made their presence felt on the fringes
of the maidan (ground) to give moral support to the youngsters.
The rally, which was expected to draw more number of students,
however, lacked the firepower with just close to 200 of them gathered
on the historic ground which can accommodate 6,000 people.
The poor number today reflects on the fall out of some core members or
crucial leaders of YFG having clout over a sizeable number of
students, who chose to stay away fearing the presence of some students
having political affiliations.
These members resigned from YFG in a late-night development after
differences cropped up with their convenor, who, today, at the fag end
made a statement stating that the movement was not politically
motivated.
Simoes asserted that vested interests were spreading rumours with an
intention to destroy the movement. We are not politicians, we are the
youth of Goa fighting to protect our land, the statement read.
Meanwhile, two of the core group members, said they decided they
wanted absolutely nothing to do with any political or politically
affiliated group. We started this movement for the love of Goa and
not anything else, they stated.
It is learnt that some of those closely working with YFG have received
threatening calls and a police complaint in this regard would be filed
soon. ENDS

Oh is it Love? At What Price?

For sure! You will read the below mentioned e-mail.
But after reading, ponder over its serious contents.
And, please do not ignore it. And, bear in mind.
December 1st is marked as WORLD AIDS DAY. A day
dedicated to reflect upon the dreaded disease. Also,
note that I have intentionally refrained form giving
out the names, places and other matter that is not
worth reading

Dear Bab Lino,

I love your e-column “Aitaracheo Kaskutleo” I am XXX
and I hail form YYY place in Goa. I run my own small
business in Dubai for the past several years. I am an
auto-technician and I have an auto garage with four
workers. Due to the nature of my business a lot of
money roll in my hands day in and day out. I am
married and have two children a girl and boy. Both are
studying in Goa and my wife too is in Goa with my
children.

I am so obsessed with my work that it is almost my
religion. I work assiduously to make my living. I open
my garage at 6.00 a.m., even before my workers report
for duty. And, I close my garage around 11.00 pm or 12
midnight.

My single bedroom flat is adjacent to my garage. My
family joins me during the school vacations in Goa.
Otherwise, I live alone in my flat. Before dinner I go
in for two or three large ones of whisky. I am nor
used to socialize at parties, dances, picnics, or
dramas. But I love to go online on net to have a peep
at the Goan newspapers. Last year, a very good and
close buddy of mine landed in Dubai from Kuwait. I
picked him up from the hotel he was staying and
brought him to my flat. Being good old friends, we
joked, we laughed and cheered with drinks. All of a
sudden my friend expressed a desire to see the night
life of Dubai. I never visited a night club but, being
a bosom friend and not to hurt his feelings, we both
visited a night club. Once inside the club I came
across a female college mate of mine who was studying
with me in Goa. She was employed in the night club as
an ‘entertainer’.

Although a bit tipsy yet, I was in my senses when I
gave her my business card. And lo! The next day she
was already at the threshold of my flat.

And then followed my extra marital affairs with her
every week. I turned out to be an unfaithful husband.
And recently, to my horror I found out that she was
infected with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
(AIDS) and also her partners who have had sexual
relations with her. It is a fact that most Indians
working beyond the shores of India are victims of
AIDS. Therefore, the Government of India are will soon
enact a legislation to make mandatory/voluntary tests
for HIV for all those entering into marriage bonds.

Here is my fond request to you to warn our Goan
brothers and sister through the columns of your
“Aitaracheo Kaskutleo” about the dangers of illicit
sex without taking preventative measures.

Yours faithfully
XXX

I replied to this e-mail with the following query.

Dear XXX

You did not reveal whether you have been infected with
AIDS after having sex with your female friend. And he
was swift in his reply.

“NO!!! I made good use of condoms”

These ghanttis have been 'imported' by two contractors

our local Panch for violating power restrictions on
the use of machinery after dark. The other is a

This seems the formula of success in Goa, principally
for non-Goans: cheap real estate deals, rock bottom
migrant labor costs, next to no political and health
oversight by local authorities, and a big return on
the tourist market.
My niece recently gave up going to Goa for the
Christmas holidays because a room in a modest hotel by
the beach, run by a non-Goan, was going for $700 a

Tony should be more concerned that it is not Goans who
are buying up and fixing heritage houses for such
great investment deals.

If you go through the accounts of the Deorala sati case and its
aftermath, you will get lots of stuff.

Mridula Sinha, ex-President of the BJP Mahila Morcha, defended
dowry in a 1993 interview. She went on to say:

 a) A woman should not work outside the home unless her family is
 financially very deprived;
 b) Give dowry and receive dowry;
 c) We oppose women's liberation, as it is another name for 'loose
 morals';
 d) We oppose equal rights for both sexes;
 e) There is nothing wrong with domestic violence against women;
very often it is women's fault, we advice women to try and adjust,
 as her non-adjustment creates the problem;
 f) Women's future lies in perpetuating the present, because no
 where else women are worshipped as we are in India;
 g) Women's liberation means liberation from atrocities, it does
not mean they should be relieved of their duties as wives and
 mothers...

RESPONSE: Thank you indeed, Vidyadhar. You have exposed the true
colours of the RSS and its variants. Anyone, especially women, who

One in three people in the world's major industrialised countries know little
or nothing about the deadly HIV/AIDS pandemic and 25 per cent believe that the
problem has been greatly exaggerated by the media, a poll said.

The survey conducted by global polling firm Ipsos, however, found that 44 per
cent respondents, including 50 per cent in the US, are prepared to pay more
taxes to combat the disease.

The disease is estimated to have killed 28 million people in last 26 years.

The Global AIDS Attitudes Survey, published by the non-governmental
organization World Vision, reveals the awareness and attitudes of populations
in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, all members of the
Group of Eight industrialized nations, towards those affected by HIV and AIDS
globally.

Speaking at the launch of the survey on Thursday, the Director of the Joint UN
Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Bunmi Makinwa underlined that the more we
understand the epidemic, the better we can make policies.

Among the main findings of the Survey is that the more people know about HIV
and AIDS globally, the more concerned they are about the issue and the more
compassionate they are towards those directly affected by it.

The World Vision Index of Concern, a tool for understanding the level of
concern each country feels towards the issue, finds that Canada leads the seven
nations surveyed for the highest level of empathy its residents feel toward
those affected by HIV and AIDS globally, with Japan ranking last. The others in
order are France, Germany, US, Italy and UK.

In addition, concern about HIV and AIDS globally is on par with the war in
Iraq. But poverty and hunger, climate change, and terrorism are of greater
concern to people than HIV and AIDS or the Iraq war.

After more than 25 years more than a quarter of a century of news coverage,
education and prevention work, about one third of the people that we surveyed
in the seven countries for the report admit that they know little or nothing
about AIDS, one in three in the wealthiest nations in the world, said Richard
Stearns, President of World Vision.

In the United States that represents about 70 million adults that say they
know little or nothing about HIV and AIDS or its impact, he added.

Noting that the Survey does contain some element of hope, he pointed out that
80 per cent of people believed their governments should do much more to help
children who are orphaned by AIDS and AIDS-related illnesses.

Another astounding statistic is that 9 out of 10 people surveyed believed
that the global community has a moral obligation to respond to the AIDS crisis,
he said.

As to why so many people admit to knowing little or nothing about the problem,
he said the answer is simple. For those millions of people the disease HIV is
simply not real. It is not personal. It is somebody else's problem and somebody
else's disease, and very often in a place very, very far away and remote from
their everyday lives.

In response, the challenge is to make HIV/AIDS more real to the public, to put
a face on the disease that kills 2.1 million people every year.

AIDS will only become real, it will only become important when we see past the
statistics, he stated.

Just one simple step to stay away from sex related AIDS

Are you Married? If no..
Always carry good quality condom with you and when need arises, make use of it
without fail.

If yes..
Just stay loyal to your wife (or husband).

Remember, prevention is better than cure. However, in this case, there is no
known cure yet. So, prevention is the only solution.

To Goanet -

When, if at all, is the Abhiyan going to turn into an Andolan?
Hopefully sometime before the sun expands into a red giant?
The current govt is content to keep the extant Abhiyan
not out and mostly at the non striker's end. For the govt
knows fully well that these piranha have no teeth.

The GBA's favourite past-time seems to be issuing
asseverations that it is apolitical while simultaneously
acting as the official certifier of who is and who is not
political. That the GBA's repeated claim of being apolitical
was no more than a pinch of coonsh*t was demonstrated
rather dramatically the other day when its south
Goa co-convenor, the secular Shridhar Kamat, was
shown to be a Congress proxy and Digu's factotum.

Now we have the same rubbish going around: GMAS is
political, GMAS is BJP in disguise, GMAS is this, GMAS is
that. But why lookest thou on the mote that is in the
eye of thy brother, but observest not the beam that is
in thine eye? (that's Shri Jesus, by the way). Thumping
repeatedly on the word apolitical does not make you (us
for the GBA is us) so. There is a perception in some
quarters, not without merit, that most elements within
the GBA are Congress-leaning and anti-BJP. Nobody
expects anyone to relinquish one's fundamental right to
political affiliation. But the charge goes further: that
political leanings of the GBA leaders translate into policy,
where actions are calculated to not damage the Congress
and provide BJP with an advantage. I am now convinced
that GBA's assertions of it being apolitical are hogwash.
Perhaps there are a couple of GBA members (Miguel, for
instance) who truly wish to hew to this sentiment, but they
are outnumbered.

The GMAS has one virtue the GBA doesn't: it is exactly
what it says it is. A medley of political and non-political
organizations. As the largest party in the opposition it is
but natural that the BJP will have a significant presence
within GMAS.

At any rate, with the back-and-forth internecine sniping
we have witnessed in the past few days (perhaps even on
Goanet) we will destroy ourselves much before we come
within driving distance of our common enemies.

Warm regards,

r

JAMES REBELO--bids adieu
Goenkar Music-maker signs-up with *THE* maker

Dear Goa-netters,

Info.very heart-rending; has just come my way. Remember/Know James Rebelo?
James from Seraulim (Salcete), who in his zenith captivated us with his
wizardry on the drums, especially as the (literally)blue eyed guy on the
drums, percussions and vocals with the Goan band LYNX??? He and his wife
Vera who had moved on to their common-interest-Cuisine (after music
dancing) with the eat-sing-dance eatery Picket Fences at Seraulim?

Well, yet another Goenkar musician has signed up with the lord. James Rebelo
passed away early evening/late this afternoon.

I'm short of precise details. Figured numerous goa-netters know him? Maybe
family /friends?? Would want to know? From word-of mouth info- James was
riding/driving toward Margao, when a vehicular accident sent him plunging
into a roadside water body, cause of his death is drowning. James is
survived by his wife Vera and 2 daughters. The older one's Marushka
(latish-teens.) can't recall the little one's name. Don't know when the
funeral is. Best look up obits in the dailies morn?

Ani kitem? Just thinking why we keep losing ones we care for/love? Yes.
Death is the lone surety we have.I can reason that with my mind... But what
do I tell my heart?

Most certainly, Not only I but also any right thinking Goan should
be concerned about non-Goans buying up the neighbourhood and all available
real estate in sight.

But then there are many reasons for this.

One needs to look into the past. Goa has always been a favourite port of
call for many a people. It started in ancient days when the Aryans,
Phoenicians, Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch, Moghuls and now laterly all kinds
of people who have and are still visiting Goa. Many of these settled down in
Goa, while some of them conquered her.

Then came the waves of migration of ur own people to the Middle East, Africa
and later on the Western World. This left a vacuum (nature abhorrs a vacuum)
and resulted in migration from Maharashtra, Karnataka other States of the
Union. Hence over the years, Goa has proved to be an irresistable magnet.

Financially, too, Goa is also an interesting proposition. With the tourist
and building booms, and the upswing in the economy, People with black money
find it easy to buy up real estate in Goa. I was once present with a
delegation that met Mr. Ramakant Khalap, the then Deputy CM in Churchill
Alemao's Cabinet. We were lobing forsome land to put up a camping centre for
scouts and gudes. He point blankly told us that we would have to buy it.
When we complained about the high rates, he told us (at that time) that
prime property in Goa was Rs. 1000/- per sq. m., but in places like Bombay
or Delhi it was the same amount per sq. ft. (i.e. 10 times more!), so what
were we grumbling about?

Again it is the nexus between politicians and the black money holders that
makes these things happen.

Nice to see this subject brought up again, thank you Mr Lopes. I had read on
this forum about a young boy who had been infected by AIDS (as opposed to the
HIV virus) by eating pineapple from a vendor in Goa who was discovered to have
AIDS.

When I questioned this and sought more information about this, I received a
couple of rebukes from Goanetters who said this subject had been discussed
previously and lots of comments were posted on the forum.

Since coming onto this forum I have not seen anything relating to the HIV
virus, nor the AIDS which developed later, its prevention or any official
figures, until I got in touch with a bona fide agency which deals with HIV
AIDS and when I reiterated the story to them, they said it was impossible to
catch HIV virus from a pineapple because once the infected blood had left the
body, the virus would die.

On this forum I received two private emails which congratulated me for
passing on this info one who sent in a public notice that nobody was
basically interested in the subject because it was already discussed.

I am however pleased you have taken the time made the effort to bring the
subject up again, I dont think the subject should be left in the archives it
is important that the subject of HIV infection (and its prevention) is made
public on a regular basis, for this type of disease is not openly discussed in
Goan families as often, if at all. Of course in Indian most European
countries, the subject appears to be taboo.

Its no good just telling single people to pop on a condom and all will be
well. Two things come to mind when this is said, one is that it will increase
promiscuity secondly it makes people lethargic will not worry too much
about the other ways in which HIV can be transmitted.

A woman cannot pop on a condom (unless its on the man she is with).
Therefore if she is infected the they do not have intercourse but have other
sexual relations which transfer bodily fluids this can infect the partner.

Its about education and I recommend to everyone, and as a father of two girls
I have stressed that EDUCATION in all aspects of this disease be made public to
EVERYONE who may be at puberty or just before, when they also learn about sex
itself. Dont leave it too late please. Education is only way forward. Go to
genuine websites get the info, email the organisations like Terrence Higgins
Trust (in the UK), who will be pleased to send you more information or
recommend for you.

Dont listen to quacks who can cure you with a mixture of cow dung mixed with
honey which they rub on your belly button, or as in some African states that
the witch doctors say to HIV men who have been diagnosed in their last stages
of live, to have sex with a baby will cure you.

Yes, pretty disgusting, but the rape of young girls babies of both sexes
endure this atrocity, it is quite common there and it revolts us to know that a
witch doctor recommends this as a cure!

THERE IS NO CURE YET. BUT THERE ARE WAYS OF PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF HIV.
If you suspect yourself, your partner or someone in the family, or friends may
have had unprotected sex with someone who is not your common partner, then the
only solution is to go for a test to find out.

What to do afterwards it also recommended by the HIV AIDS organisations.

Lastly please remember, you cannot catch the HIV virus by drinking from the
same cup as an HIV positive person has used, you can use the same cutlery
plates (but common sense tells us for hygiene purposes, and cross contamination
of OTHER types of viruses, such as e. coli or salmonella etc, to WASH all
crockery and cutlery ANYWAY), but if you used the same items, even the toilet
seat, you WILL NOT catch the disease.

  WHY?

Because the HIV virus, which leads to AIDS cannot survive outside the body,
not even on a pineapple. It can however enter through broken skin, but you
have to place the virus directly into the cut to get a chance of passing it on,
there is NO RECORD in its 30yr history where infected food has passed on the
virus to another living human being.

Dont be scared, just be cautious.

And thanks again Mr Lpes for bringing some extra sanity to this forum. Oh by
the way, excuse me for cutting and summarising your post, I have been told by
the moderators that I must not send in the previous post in full, as it takes
up bandwidth. I have had several of my posts deleted

IFFI: Sun, sand and some seriousness
CommentMail to friend

By: Saibal Chatterjee, TNN

Indian cinema - indeed India itself - has changed beyond recognition.
But the nation's official international film festival, an embodiment
of immutability, continues to cling on to the past.

The more the world changes the more the International Film Festival of
India (IFFI) remains the same. The ongoing 38 th edition of the IFFI,
in its fourth straight year in Goa, is no different from what the 25
th or the 26 th IFFI were.

It was a drab sarkari event and it still is a dreary sarkari event.
Bureaucracy reigns supreme. The festival bumbles along from one crisis
to another, one controversy to another.

But should we write off the annual event as a dead loss? Certainly
not, especially when IFFI has managed this year to miraculously pull
itself back from the brink of redundancy by going back to the basics.

When the festival was first held in the Nehruvian era, it was
envisaged as a bridge between Indian films and the best of world
cinema. Gloss and glamour weren't what the founding fathers of the
film festival were looking for. Had that been the case, IFFI this year
would have showcased Farah Khan's blockbuster Om Shanti Om rather than
an otherwise impossible-to- access Manipuri or Assamese film.

There are only two Hindi films in the Indian Panorama this year.
Neither of them has any Bollywood leanings. Bhavna Talwar's Dharm and
Sameer Hanchate's Gafla, both provide a take on issues of social
import.

They may not be earth-shatteringly outstanding pieces of cinema, but
they are, for all they are worth, rooted in reality and have something
to say about the world around them. That, let's face it, is no mean
feat these days and deserves to be feted.

One is happy to report that IFFI has put programming back where it
belongs - at the very centre of the festival. The greatest thing that
Neelam Kapur, the current IFFI director, and her team have done is to
keep mainstream Bollywood away. That has helped IFFI reclaim its tag
as a pure film festival, devoted to celebrating the medium rather than
just the stars who parade across the screen.

The 38 th IFFI hasn't been just another starstudded show, where
Bollywood starlets get to grab their 15 minutes of fame, as they had
done during the first three years of the film festival's life in Goa.
With the carnival spirit at low ebb, the festival, despite the chaos
and mismanagement that interminably plague it, has once again turned
into an opportunity for avid film watchers to savour quality cinema in
peace and exchange notes with others of their ilk.

IFFI is definitely improving, master filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan
told this correspondent during the course of an informal conversation.
The challenge now will lie in fulfilling the expectation of further
improvement in the years ahead. Coming from Adoor, a staunch opponent
of the Bollywoodisation of IFFI and of the move to reduce the festival
to a tourism event, the approbation carries immense weight.

Festival director Neelam Kapur insists that the IFFI programming this
year is of the highest order. It's as fine a line-up as any, she
says. Sadly, the media makes the festival seem much worse than it
actually is. She may actually be right. The electronic media has
indeed sought to dismiss the latest edition of the festival as a flop
show simply because Bollywood stars haven't descended on the venue.
But no festival that brings together the latest works of directors
like Bille August, Aki Kaurismaki and Alain Corneau, among others ,
besides presenting mini retrospectives of Ingmar Bergman and Volker
Schlondorff can ever be a waste of time for those who have a passion
of true cinema.

Some locals in the know admit that while Goa may be about fun,
football and fenni, films are furthest from the people's minds. In
other words, the state doesn't have an entrenched cinema culture. But
why should that bother anybody? When the Cannes Film Festival began
its journey 60 years ago, the town that hosts it was a nondescript
fishing port. Today, Cannes is where the world goes to fish for the
biggest movie deals.

There is no reason to believe that Goa can't be developed into a major
film festival venue. Goa is a great place for a film festival, says
Adoor. The weather is great, the people are wonderful and the
ambience is getting better by the day. But he feels that the
programming needs to improve drastically. There was a

It is not really surprising to see the treatment meted out to her.

It is the duty of the Chess associations, SAG and Goa Government to

[Goanet] Goan businessmen-2: HERALD(Goa), Dec 2, 2007

2007-12-01 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

GOAN BUSINESSMEN-2
By Valmiki Faleiro

Pedro Paulo de Souza was a legend in his lifetime. He monopolized imports of
tobacco
to Goa. The Portuguese had brought the tobacco plant to India from the Americas
in
1560. Goa’s soil was unsuitable, so it was grown on the plains of the Deccan
Plateau.
But, like some other plant species the Portuguese brought from various corners
of the
globe – that were propagated by Garcia de Orta in his gardens in the ‘Praças de
Norte’
(colonies around Bombay) – India-grown tobacco could not match world standards.

Pedro Paulo (PP) imported the best of Brazilian and Virginian tobacco. PP was a
thin,
tall but sprightly man who traveled, as the more adventurous did those days –
the late
19th century – on horseback. The story of how he built a vast land-estate is
amazing. I
heard it from Goa’s Senior Counsel, Adv. Manohar Usgaonkar, during the course
of a
professional consultation. Usgaonkar has a prodigious memory. What he recalled
from
his childhood helped his clients, and us, solve a mystery.

Together with a friend, Jyoti Konkar, I was buying a property from Melita Pinto
do
Rosario and her husband, Fernando, of Porvorim. Melita was PP’s granddaughter.
The
land, where Nestle’s KitKat factory stands today in Usgao, admeasured some
1,78,000
sq. metres. It comprised of several erstwhile comunidade leases (‘Aforamentos.’)

Problem was the sum area of the leases fell short by some 25,000 m2 of the
property’s
aggregate area. Hence the meeting with Usgaonkar, the Vendors’ advocate. He
told us
the story of Pedro Paulo and suggested we search the comunidade Register of
Leases,
armed with a list of names of PP’s close relatives. The mystery soon unraveled.

PP, it seems, had a plan, a dream. From the moment his horse set out from his
house in
Aldona, for the weekly market in Ponda, he wanted it to trot all the way only
through land
that belonged to him. He wanted to acquire a broad corridor of contiguous
properties
right from his Aldona gateposts to the market of Ponda!

How could one achieve such a seemingly impossible dream? PP was a resourceful
man.
When import consignments arrived at his warehouses, he had the biggest and the
best
tobacco leaves set aside while being sorted. The prized leaves were never put
on sale,
even at a premium. Their value: beyond money.

On his weekly horseback visits to Ponda, PP would carry a bagful of his prized
tobacco.
While returning, he would stop at the house of a Comunidade president of a
village en
route, and present his priceless ‘saguade’ (gift.)

“Bhatkara,” he would then exclaim, “I have no much land in your village that I
so love!”
Promptly, several ‘Alvaras de Aforamento de terreno’ (lease deeds of comunidade
land,
granted on payment of an annual fee or ‘foro’) would then start getting
processed.
Agricultural leases could be granted upto a maximum area of 30,000 m2 per
lease. PP’s
grandiose plan necessitated not a few but a multiplicity of leases, which he
got, thanks to
his prized tobacco leaves, in the names of himself and his family members, in
villages
along the route from Aldona to Ponda.

‘Aforamentos’ by law could be remitted with a down payment of 20 years’ lease
fees, to
turn the land freehold. PP remitted them all and built a huge estate of private
property.
He might not have realized his dream in full, where his horse, from Aldona to
Ponda,
strutted exclusively through his land, by the time he breathed his last on Nov.
23, 1907.

To get an idea of the kind of estate he built, consider this. In the Inventory
proceedings
at the Senior Division Court at Mapusa in 1973, sixty-six years after he died,
the portion
of the estate as yet unsold by his descendants listed several properties ... in
the villages
of Pale, Usgao and Surla – all on his horseback route between Aldona and Ponda.
Just
one of these properties in Usgao that I know, was worth Rs.1.20 crore in 1993.
Multiply
that by ten for today’s value.

PS: Never knew Goan coconut trees sprouted “branches” that “decided to do a
salsa” on
overhead power lines, plunging IFFY into darkness. Thought our coconut trees
grew
ramrod straight. Got this gem from the Editor of a tabloid another Editor
described as
“taxi” journalism – yellow and black. (More on Goan Editors another day.) The
bloke who
discovered coconut trees with branches was crying about never being invited on
a jaunt
to Cannes. Goan journalism, ah! Must check from my Malayalee friends if there’s
some
long-lost breed of coconut that grew branches in Kerala, ha! (ENDS)

Re: [Goanet] Ivana is coming by Goa Express train after winning Chess Gold

2007-12-01 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dears,

Why should those who are GOOD in Goa migrate to the West? It is
incumbent on the game managers ...in this case the Goa Chess
Association [of which netters Shrikant Barve and Augusto Pinto are a
part currently] to raise this issue in public fora. I hope this
is just the beginning of a debate.

An air fare for Ivana, and one person to accompany her, is not asking
for the moon these days. The Govt. of Goa does as much for petty
starlets and mediapersons during IFFI.

Ask Dr.Susanna De Souza, the Director of Sports to do something if
the Chess Association is too impoverished to do it on its own. Ivana
is not too small to draw her attention!

Perhaps, Vijay Mallya can put the Digu-Kaka Government to shame by
giving Free tickets on Kingfisher Air to Ivana Furtado. A fully
clothed little Ivana Furtado emerging from the plane is better
publicity than a bikini-clad Vidisha Pavate spawled below the masthead
of local news papers. Don't you guys and gurlz agree?

Mog asundi.

Re: [Goanet] Noted drummer dies in mishap

2007-12-01 Thread Jim Fernandes
Very sad to hear this news. I've known James since high school days. He was a
couple of years senior to me at Loyola High in Margao.

He was a good looking blue eyed boy (a rarity among Goans) and was very popular
at school. But he shot to prominence with his excellent skills on the drums. He
leaves behind his wife Vera - a fine ballroom dancer, two young kids, his
mother and siblings.

For a brief time the family lived in my village at Per-Seraulim/Colva, during
which time, I took a few dance classes with them. Always smiling, James was a
real gentleman - we shall miss him dearly.

Death due to vehicular accidents, is an all too familiar occurence on Goan
roads. The stretch of road where James died, between Mungul in Margao and
Seraulim pond, is a lousy section of road. If you fall off the road, you end up
in the body of water, which is an extension of the Seraulim pond. Since olden
days, the water in the pond is retained with sluice gates at this time of the
year, to help local farmers grow second season crops. I do not believe anybody
uses that water anymore to grow any crops. Most likely, the locals use it to
catch fish (Pintoll) around March/April when they drain the water.

It seems, another young man, also from Seraulim, died in another road accident
just a day after James. It's sad to see so many young people dying on Goan
roads. I believe it is time, they gave classes in Goan schools in defensive
driving and traffic safety.

preceeds the UAE NATIONAL DAY!

1) On thursday, Goa's Padmashree R E M O, was on air waves on 101.6 FM. Remo in
the live interview with RJ Tia, went on to say that Goa is not the same Goa he
grew up to.
Remo, before being abruptly cut off from straying away from the topic of his
music, told the masses how Goa was being sold by the politicians. he even made
a mention and gave some publicity to the GBA .

I would salute Remo for having the guts to say all that on the UAE radio
chanell. The world should know, see and understand how the beautiful land of
Goa is being raped by the rogues.

2) There was a tiatr Amkam Xanti Di...as usual comedian Domnik aka hoddo bakru
and sibling Luis Bachchan thrilled the packed crowds.
But the show stealer was none other than Francis de Tuem...he exposed the state
of Goa and brought before the public how the current set of 40 thieves are
looting Goa and selling it to outsiders...
He also warned in his song that Goans are patient but not dumb...that the day
is not far that if further provoked...Goans can still take over the might of
the ghantis and Goa's Ghanteancho kumpar!

What does the above potray...that Goans living in Goa are constantly being made
to get frustrated.

Government after government, mla after mla and minister after minister has
played with the emotions of Goans and it is time, the entire situation will
come full circle and the volcano will erupt...

Also, the tiatrists mentioned that the people of saligao realised that 80+ Dr
Willy was tired after trying to pull the river princess and needed rest, hence
they gave him a political break...

While hearing this i did think of a certain alfred de tavares (and smiled to
myself) who recently took offence to my expose of the old fox dotor, wonder if
he has the energy to help Dr willy come back to pull the river princess out,
sometime around the next elections!

Cheers

Many thanks for the info about the idiots who support sati and are so
incredibly primitive in their views about women. Their level of stupidity is
truly mindboggling. Please keep us informed about other examples of primitive
social thought in India and elsewhere. However, do bear in mind that such
primitiveness is to be found in Europe too. I just had a ding dong on another
site with a Goan bloke in Finland who felt that it was OK to argue that Indians
breed like rats (not rabbits incidentally!) . The idiot thought that he was
right to call a spade a spade but could not stomach my refernce to his view as
that of the proverbial coconut (brown outside, white inside) and that as an
Indian I objected strongly to his view about us Indians.

Dear Selma,

This post of yours slipped my attention. You are
right, in general, regarding the interactions between
genes and environment. However, recent studies,
especially those comparing identical twins with
fraternal twins, and twins reared apart, have shown
that antisocial and aggressive behavior of children is
substantially genetically determined. One other
curious feature is that as children grow up to become
adults the environmental influence, especially, of the
parental kind assumes lesser importance, and genetic
tendencies become paradoxically more prominent. This
has been shown to be the case with regard to
religiosity, for instance.

Now to find out about the great extent to which the
overall behavior of young children is innate, I would
recommend you What Infants Know by Jacques Mehler
and Emmanuel Dupoux. It reviews most of the recent
findings on the cognitive science of early
development.

Dear mervyn:

How do you know what the moderatos will do? this is
not the first time you are speaking for others...if i
remember correctly you had announced on goanet that no
one understands what i write...

furthermore I submit to you that NO ONE including your
good self can see the offensiveness, errors, arrogance
or stupidity of their own posts..we all write what we
think is fair and balanced...it is for others to
politely point out the perceived deficiencies.

[Goanet] Home truths

2007-12-01 Thread Bhandare
Rajan-bab:
The biggest home truth is that many of the self
proclaimed activists , apolitical mind you, hate the
BJP more than they love Goa.
This lack of unity is appalling given their grandiose
public statements about saving Goa. The carefuly
constructed myth that GBA is apolitical is now
exposed.
Isnt arvind bhatikar politically active? isnt the
sarpanch of keri involved in panchayat level politics?
isnt Lok Shakti of which Francisco Colaco an integral
part , staunchly pro Digambar?

[Goanet] Selma's Fine Wine Wit

2007-12-01 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
GoaNetters,

If hitting and than rubbing a soothing cream is what Selma calls a Fine
wine and wit I have nothing else to say than to say Selma as usual is
always right in what she writes though she forgets what she had posted
previously and in which connection Such forgetfulness usually take place
with aged personalities.I frankly don't know Selma's age or anything
about her.

The above response is in connection with her posting dated 29/11/07 under
subject heading To wit or not/to Dr. Barad on which Selma picked up some
lines of my previous posting which reads, More than Bosco everyone in
GoaNeet will be happy to see Selma dancing separately with lap-dance!
Good thinking for upcoming Christmas! These lines were used by me when she
had posted one message in connection with Moderators responsibility against
Bosco in which she said she wants to have lap-dance. And now in her posting
titled To wit or not/to Dr. Barad she says Dear Dr Barad...Fine
wine and wit should always be dry. In your case I see you've not had the
opportunity to be acquainted with either

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

2007-12-01 Thread Bosco - Goanet Volunteer

The subject thread and its related offshoots is closed.

There has been a tendency lately for Goanetters to get carried away on OFF
TOPIC subjects. And moderators that reject such messages are at the
receiving end from such subscribers claiming to be 'handed' the short straw.

Please note just because one subscriber posted an OFF TOPIC post does not
automatically allow other subscribers to automatically begin a crusade to
counter the original OFF TOPIC post and its subscriber.

What is also inappropriate is that some subscribers are using Goanet to
hold the bag for some Goan politicians. While the acts of omission and
commission of our Goan politicians has a fairly large influence on Goan
society, subscribers are violating the privileges afforded them to post on
Goanet by indulging in never-ending and voluminous exchanges. It is one
thing to provide a point of view on any issue or a counter view to somebody
else but to enter into verbal slogging matches is undesirable. Please do not
drown the other voices that want to be heard on Goanet.

[Goanet] SEZ is BJP baby Parented by Parikar and Digamber

2007-12-01 Thread Jamima Dias
SEZ is BJP baby Parented by Parikar and Digamber

I have been seeing in the media all sorts of denials resorted to by the two top
BJP politicians in Goa. One the impotent leader of opposition and the other,
the BJP/RSS/Sangh Paarivar man in the Congress, Digamber Kamat who heads the
bankrupt Congress in Goa.

If the records are correctly quoted, Sardinha must have the guts to bring out
to the Goa's people that both Monahar Parriker and Digamber Kamat were the
prime creators of the SEZ controversy while they ruled Goa through the
communial Bharatiya Janata party, a sad era in Goa's history that saw communial
violence and dividing of Goa on lines of caste and religion.

Today, our CM is so scared to take on Manohar Parrikar and expose the BJP that
he knows very well that if he holds Manohar Parrikars nose, his mouth will
open, the way the old koankanni saying goes, and its vice versa.

Goa is very unfortunate, some evil witch has cast its evil eye on this
beautiful land. The misfortune of Goa is that both the CM and the leader of
opposition are both pro-BJP men and have committed joint sins while in the BJP
days. Today both try to save each other's tails.

The people of Margao will agree that most of Digamber Kamat's supporters in
Margao are BJP activists and many of the BJP staunch supporters worked for
Digamber Kamat during the elections for a bargain. Manohar Parrikar knew of
this secret liasion, but to Manohar Parrikar, Digamber Kamat is an old BJP
buddy and he did not campaign much at Margao to dethrone Digamber Kamat.

A sad future lies for Goa when both the Leader of opposition and the CM have an
unholy nexus through common cadres of the BJP.

It is a shame for the experienced and age old Congress ministers and MLAs that
they are unable to expose the fact to the people and not have an original
congressman as the chief monster. Also, politicians like Churchill Alemao have
proved to the Goans that he is a mercenary and is interested in profits for
himself, and his family only. Churchill is the darkest defacement for catholics
in Goa's politics and has let down even the church in Goa.

SEZ, IFFI and RP 2011 are the creations of land sharks and at one time there
was an unholy nexus between Manohar Parrikar, Digamber Kamat and builders like
Datta Naik. Digamber Kamat also has interests in real estate through benami
companies and hence he too benefits from the Regional plan and the rampant
selling of Goa.

The sins of ommission and commission committed by Manohar Parrikar in his
capacity as leader of opposition goes to show to the Goan public that he is not
too keen to expose the misdeeds of the Congress under Digamber Kamat.

Manohar Parrikar has been using frontmen like BJP men in the GBA and Mathany
Saldhana and Aires Rodriguese (both co-incidently catholics) instead of him
comming down in the battle field.

Goa's lone media warrior, If one has annalysed the situation, the Independent
Goan Observer run by Rajan Narayan is also not very independent anymore but is
dependent on Digamber Kamat as he has provided a ghanti with a roof over his
head. As a Digamber Kamat fashion to provide basis ammenities to ghantis and
get them into his camp (not sure which camp he might choose to be at the
elections).

In the last issue of the GO, rajan claimed that Shridhar Kamat, who everyone
knows to be a pro-RSS man and is always singing bhajans, hymns and aartis in
favour of Digamber Kamat, to be secular and secular activists in the GBA to be
pro-BJP fans. Shridhar Kamat is a deadly chamcha of anything that buys him
bread or say a bottle of feni!

I am sure Rajan Narayan owes this much to Digamber Kamat and his great home
provider Datta Naik another unwanted thrash from Margao town. So by buying
Rajan Naryan, Digamber kamat has scored another ace. If you observe Rajan
Naryan writes more of IFFi and conjugal sex in the GO than politics.

Also sad for Goa are the selling out of NGO's. In Goa everybody is desperate to
make a fast buck, even by selling their back sides like the way Goans are
selling their land. Many have sold out to the lure of money.

I ask an open question to the Congress of Digamber Kamat and the BJP of Manohar
Parrikar -- please do not give the impression to the people that you are not
the saviours of the SEZs. I ask Manohar Parrikar and his BJP, that should they
have been in power and in a position to make a commission through SEZs,
wouldnt they have deemed fit that Goa deserves SEZs?

And why is Digamber Kamat so slow in acting? has he to run to his mama-mia
Sonia Gandhi and Margaret Alva to whom he owes his seat of power to consult to
check what is good for Goa?

Where is the Aam Aadmi in all this? Goa doesnt want fake propoganda like IFFI
where it will be a great party for Digamber Kamat and his colleagues in the
cabinet to get photographed with Shah Rukh Khan.

Stop SEZs Mr CM. It will destroy Goa and also you in the bargain. Show
