I would suggest that non-chardi stop participating in the feast! Or have a
parallel feast of their own?! I wonder why anyone would want to be king at
all nowadays!

Thank you Nasci.

I think we need to define the problem before making

any attempt to solve it.

What could 'Goa Catholic Church' do to re-solve this

problem - so that 'Freedom to every Cansaulim-kar

Parishnor to take part in the celebration of the

Three Kings feast in Cansaulim'?

Perhaps, Dr. Teotonio R. de Souza

[EMAIL PROTECTED] could come up with a solution

in the New Year 2008 - to celebrate caste-free and

Gaunkari-free 'Three Kings' feast of Cansaulim.

U still got it all wrong!

Please read my posting properly. U see it is a fact,

that only the Gauncar Chaddis are allowed to

because of this Feudal Communidades Sytem.

Example, in the village where I come from, only the

Gaumkar Caldeiras beloging to the Vangor are allowed

to participate and only the gauncar tribes cobtrol

 the

finances et al. My family also Chaddo/chaddi, not

descendent from this Gauncar Tribe is not allowed,

 to

participate, even though I used to give huge

contributions to Church and other charities, whilst

 I

 lived there!

That is why I am saying that this Gauncari system of

Communidades is the bane of division and apartheid

 in

What I am saying is that: This Feudal Gauncari

  Cansaulim, charddi 3 kings Feast

Yes, the three Kings must be from Chardi caste

 (also

  knows as gaumcars).

  Now who are these chardi?

Mainly, Saldanhas, Vaz, Gracias, Barettos etc of

  Cansaulim/Arossim/Cuelim

Mind you there are Vaz in kunnbi community too in

  the area.

Chardi – necessarily mean landlords with large

  Portuguese houses ?

No. There are chardis who are ‘Poder’ and ‘render’

  by profession (bakers

toddy tapers) yet they are proud to be chardi.

 Many

  chardis are even siphoning

public funds (DSSS) Rs.1000 per month (remember my

  recent ‘1in3 Goan

housesholds living in poverty?’) Yet they are

 proud

  to be chardis. There are

some chardis in the area who are goondas history

  sheeters, some even serving

life sentence for murder. Yet they are chardis.

Cansaulim Church is very notorious for such

 things-

  I mean Chardi only affair.

Parish Priests (who themselves are mainly Chardis)

  come and go but never

bothered to touch these issues. I am sure, Bishop

house Altinho too is full of

  chardis

AMKAM KITEAK PODDLAM? DANTUI MHOJE, VONNTTTUI

  MHOJE.

The 3 ‘Reis’- 1 each come from Cansaulim,

  Arossim, Cuelim

Usually, starts with Sons first, then grand sons

 and

  the cycle continues

(kings age group between 5-10). See pics

GBP v/s INR

Only yesterday, GBP exchange rate was 78.50 (bank) and as of now 5.30am 21/12
it has further nose dived to 77.50.

Just about 5-6 days ago, it was Rs.80 but my friend was waiting till 20/12
hoping it would go up but yesterday being his last day to pay the installment
Rs.14 lacs (or face 18% interest) he had no other option than to exchange GBP
20,000 @ Rs.78.50.
That's Rs. 30,000 loss for not exchanging the same 5 days ago.

He has booked a 2 bed appt with Gera (Panjim) costing around 58 lacs ready in 2
years.

However, the builder was willing to give one more week up to 25th Dec provided
he pays post-dated cheque on due date i.e. on 20/12

If exchanged today, he would have lost another Rs.20,000. (total 50,000)

Dear Goanetters
What is in a caste system ? I cannot understand why some people bring caste in
this modern computer world. I appreciate the modern generation for they have
forgotten not only caste system but all barriers of human beings. People who
write about caste system on this net are outdated ancient humans. I do not
myself feel a different person when I mix about with people of different
castes. Gone are those days when caste system dominated the church. The older
clergy still might be feeling happy because a bamon is made a bishop. But I
find no difference. Today girls have been marrying christians, hindus, muslims
and even non goans. They look at the status of the groom and try to find out
whther this boy is suitable lover or not and not whether he is a bammon or
chaddo or suddir. Christians should hang in shame for making humans as low
caste and employing them to dig graves and ring church bells and place them all
in one ward called Marrod and calling them mars. Jesus himeself woul
d not like this. It is high time we should close this mail once for all. I
wish to inform Monteiro and Edward that I do not take feni and do not need one
for I can sleep very peacefully when night comes. I do not have any tensions in
life being a middle class goan brought up in this muddy soil and have very
little expectations in life. I do not want to go to the west as I know I will
be a fish out of water over there. These two gentlemen of high class society
can drown their frustrations using champagne or black and white whiskey and I
will not be jealous and for your information if by any chance you two do come
to Goa please do not offer me any of the western drinks for I do not know how
to taste but offer me goan cunji with yesterday's dry curry for I am a goan.

Goans have a habit of giving ghantis credit. This bridge and that maidan is
named after a ghanti. What about our own martyrs like Floriano Vaz?

Should the maidan named after a ghanti whom the Goans do not even know have a
Goan name ie: Floriano Vaz campo!

As per the report filed by Felicio Cardoz in the GULAB of January,
1987, the police arrived in a private Matador Tempo GDL 9945 at about
1.20 P.M. in the afternoon, at the behest of one businessman named
Naik driving a Fiat car GDF 1174. The lathi charged the people on the
street before dragging out 22 year old Florian Vaz from his house
where he was eating lunch. On the orders of ASI Narayan Yetle [now
Police Inspector] the injured Floraino was shot dead at point blank
range by SRP Constable Rajaram G. Pawar of the Gujarat Police
requisitioned to control [or suppress] the language agitation. The
case was registered under No.444/86 of 20 December, 1986 at the Margao
Police station. Post mortem was done by Dr.Sylvano Dias Sapeco at

Celebrities, Socialites and Aldonkars
A village that celebrates education and the Goan way of life
By Cecil Pinto

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

Everyone's SHOUTING for chrissake. The music is so friggin LOUD you
can't converse without shouting. Why are you shoving this NDTV mike in
my face? Why's that guy pointing the big camera at me?

Do you come often for fashion shows?

No, actually this is my first time. I'm here more as a Wendell-friend
than a fashion-fan.

I notice your open-shirt style statement. Is that an Armani?

No it's an 'Any-Item-Rs.250/-.
All-Clothes-Must-Sell-to-Recover-Fire-Loss' shirt. And I keep it
unbuttoned to give my paunch breathing space. This is a duplicate
Jockey banian….

Was that silver Mercedes yours?

No I came on an Activa scooter.

You're not the normal celebrity type…

Definitely not! I'm a celebrator. I celebrate Goa and the Goan way of
life. I'm an Aldonkar!

Is that some sort of a Goan Page Three term?

Page Three my backside! I'm from Aldona, the greatest village in the
world. You Delhi bimbettes should do your background studies before
interviewing Goans. Oie waiter! Aree oi! Tsschhs! S! Get me some
more of this liquid gold!

Ok Sir, sorry about my ignorance. What is special about Aldona?

Just today morning we had a Wann Xitt at the Aldona Institute.

Won't shit? Who? Sorry Sir, the music is loud

It's called a Beggars Lunch. Long back, the poorer people in the
neighbourhood were given this special meal before any great
celebration, like a wedding. It is eaten seated on the floor with the
food on woven leaf plates being constantly replenished. Hello are you
listening at all?

Sure Sir

And this morning outside the eating area we had a brass band, mando
singing, 'goddyani' like marbles, 'koyno-bal' like 'gilli danda',
'kaylyani' like hopscotch. We also had bullock cart rides and… Hello?
Where you going? Hello!

Sir if you don't mind I have to find some socialites…

I'm telling you about celebrating Goan cultural traditions and you're
searching for socialites?! Aldona doesn't have socialites. We have
people who do good for society. We have Savio Figueiredo, Francis
Dias, Manuel Alemao, Teacher Margaret, Janice Figueiredo, Leslie
D'Souza, Christopher Moniz, Nick Figueiredo, Francis Lobo, Carlos
Silva, Lawrence Baptista… I could go on. Last year we put up a
statue!

Aha! Someone important? A politician, a religious leader, a saint?

An educationalist, Edward Soares. Aldona celebrates education and not
politics. We collected enough funds to institute scholarships. Last
year the monsoons destroyed the house of a poor family. We collected
funds among ourselves and built them a new house. People gave not only
of their money but their time and skills. Rosario Fernandes, Blaise
D'Cruz, Freddy D'Souza, Jose D'Souza, Thomas Tavares, Moses Fernandes,
Uday Chodankar, Vallabh Polle, Norman Athaide, Premanand Prabhu, Fr.
Sertorio Rodrigues, Shakoor Qadri … these are our celebrities. Hey!
Your cameraman's gone. Your mike is off! You're not recording this!!
Waiter!

Sir, everyone's gone down to the ramp where the fashion show starts
in a few minutes. Shall we go there?

Oh! You mean all these people who were in this Mariott ballroom just
now, strutting their stuff, were not part of the show?

Ha! No they were the socialites. The seats are all taken. Let's stand here.

Hey don't you have any interviewing to do?

Not right now. While the ramp show is on it's just the cameraman's
job. Tell me more about Aldona. I might do a feature on Aldonkars
someday. They're quite fascinating

Please do not. Aldonkars don't seek publicity. We just do what any
right thinking community should do. Day before yesterday I went to the
Xavier Centre for Historical Research for a presentation 'Perspectives
from the Nineteenth-Century' by Dr. Rochelle Pinto, using extracts
from her book 'Between Empires: Print and Politics in Goa'. What a
woman. What brains, what language, what presence, what looks! None of
these models can compare!

Why you telling me about Rochelle?

Oh! She's an Aldonkar too! Tomorrow I'm going to watch a performance
of Isabel Vas' play 'On The Holy Trail' enacted by the Mustard Seed
Company. It's about our lovely land and the insiders and outsiders.
Who is buying and selling what? Why? Who cares for the land and who
doesn't? What is being lost? These are issues to be addressed, and
Isabel has done it through a superb dramatic

Rss wallahs on GN call it slave mentality if the invasion of Goa is not called
'liberation'. For 46 years Goa is under the death row. Now we have NGO's and r

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year

Christmas is a time for Love; a time for Joy and Peace;
A time to trim the Christmas Tree and a time to stuff the geese.
It's a time when we can come together, however far or near;
To shed a little hope into a world of sorrow and fear.

Yet Christmas could be all year 'round, if only we would try
To gently wipe an old man's brow or soothe a baby's cry.
If we could smile throughout the year as we do on Christmas Day;
Just think what happiness we'd shed along life's weary way.

To give a gift of Hope to one who otherwise has none;
To be a Friend to somebody whom everyone else has shun.
To be Forgiving of our faults, and of our sisters and our brothers;
To Live in Peace and Harmony with ourselves and with each other.

Ah, don't you see that Christmas is more than opening up the gifts;
It's more than singing Christmas Carols and rolling in big snow drifts.
It's a feeling that can stay with you throughout each day, all year;
And all it takes is a loving heart.and a sensitive little tear...

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2008 TO YOU ALL

Dear Chinmay Bhandare,

It may shock you to read this: but my views on the Agacaim martyrs
and your views are almost the same. The problem was, no doubt,
aggravated due to the KPA-led agitation and the fact of the roadblocks
erected by the agitators that made the medical attention to the
injured difficult. If at all, the Konkani Rajbhas was a collateral
issue to the killing .. neither its cause nor its effect.

I do not share your views on Floraino Vaz. It is based on what was
written at that time and has gone undisputed so far. A slight
correction: ASI Narayan Yetle did not shoot Florian Vaz, he only
ordered it. The shooting was not from a service revolver [as was also
mistakenly stated at the programme to pay him homage] but from a .303
rifle held and fired by Rajaram G.Pawar a constable of the State
Reserve Police from Gujarat than requisitioned for bandobust duty in
Goa. The F.I.R. No.444/86 of 20.12.1986 of the Margao Town Police
Station and the Post Mortem report of Hospicio Hospital Margao should
bear that out.

One Mr. Naik, a businessman was involved in this sordid business. I
would think of him as an aggravating factor. The fact is Floriano was
involved in erecting road blocks and in the agitation, the unwitting
cannon fodder of an agitation that gave his family nothing, not even
Konkani in Roman script that they use as the Official language of Goa.
I consider Floriano Vaz as a martyr for a cause that reamins
unfulfilled. You may not share this view. That is okay.

Mog asundi.

Subject: [Goanet] Remembering the sacrifice of Floriano Vaz for
   Konkani.

Dear All,

Another account of the Floriano vaz tragedy is that he
was a local tough...rubbed a salcette politician on
the wrong side and was marked by the cops for special
treatment. The opportunity presented itself on the
fateful day and ASI Narayan Yetle killed the young man
in cold blood...The KPA agitation needed a martyr and
they made the most of this tragedy.

The other six unfortunate souls who met their end in
the rice fields near dongri were victims of a group
clash that had nothing to do with konkani agitation.

One christian gentleman had a dispute with parwatkar
brothers over the auction of a sluice gate for fishing
reasons. The christian party sent some goons over to
break the parvatkar shop and in the melee the goons
got thrashed. The christians couldnt carry these
injured men to the hospital because roads were
blocked. They rang the aggacaim church bells and
collected a mob of locals .In retaliation the
parvatkars collected a mob of their own and then they
fought each other in the paddy fields . Guns were used
so were sickles.

These unfortunate incidents though colored by the
language agitation had nothing to do with it. But
every agitation needs martyrs, and thus a carefully
crafted myth was born.

The konkani protagonists hailed them as martyrs while
the marathi protagonists called them molestors of
women Ofcourse there was no proof whatsoever that
these men molested any women.

BICHOLIM DEC 21: A three year old leopard caught in the trap laid by
Animal Rescue Squad escaped after breaking

the iron rod of the cage and injuring three ARS members
at Naiginim Bicholim.

It may be recalled that since last few days leopard had created havoc
in the area by attacking the villagers and killing

dogs and cattles. The ARS had laid a trap to catch the leopard at
Dhangarwada Naiginim and had kept vigil at night.

Today at about 4 am a leopard was traped in the cage and the villagers
later informed the ARS about the incident. The

ARS chief, Amrut Singh along with his team including Kedar Kanekar and
Dinesh Mandrekar swung into action and

went to the site. The news of the leopard spread like wild fire and
soon there was huge crowd seen in the area.

Amrut Singh went with the motive to directly transport the leopard to
Bondla. We were just putting

a sack over the cage when the leopard became so violent that it swung
and jumped in our direction bending the 8

mm iron rod Amrut singh disclosed adding before we could sense
what was happening the leopard ran from the

crowd into the jungle

Probably the cage was of a bit bigger in size and the iron rods were
also rusted this made his escape easier and also he

was able to jump with a force in the cage Amrut Singh accepts
because of the crowd too the leopard got nervous and

furious.

In a desperate bid to escape the leopard also injured those who came
in between them including Amrut Singh. One of

She told me she was a mahar when we got talking, and
invited over to her place but I had to decline as I had a

I had just polished off a cup of chai and a plate of shiro

854 (including you?)

Dear all,

This year, I thought I would send a card to each one of you individually,
because of the time it may take etc, I decided to sent same card same time to
all via BCC.

Guess what? Yahoo did not allow me saying 'there are too many addresses'.

So how many is 'too many'?

I was curious to know...

As on date, it's 854
(this is over a period of 50 months)

So, who are the people in it?
If you wrote to me at least once, then there are 99% chances of you being one
of them.

99% of the time I reply almost instantly (or else I forget) and when you do so
(when replying for the first time only) yahoo automatically asks if you wish
to save, say 'yes' and he/she is added to your address book.

When I type A (it displays about 30 different addresses beginning with letter
A).
Similarly, Q-6, U-4, V-32, W-20, X-5, Y-9 Z-4 (all others av.30).

Sorry guys, no card this year..

i will think something else.

When it seems that the casta system was done away by Bharat, in the UK
according to the BBC it is thriving much to the dismay of Cornel. One Sudreka
rap singer by the name of Shiva's Lingam was done by superior castas.

In the Southall area once famous for Bharats there is a lot of brickering among
the various castistas. Lower castas also known as dalits are not allowed to
pray in the uber casta temples etc.

Dears,

Below is a clarification that I have issued to the press on this
POLITICAL V/S APOLITICAL debate, first for the anti-Regional Plan-2011
and now for the anti-SEZ in Goa. The fact is that the Apolital
grouping has been successful in 1. getting the RP 2011 revoked and 2.
stopping construction/destruction at the two SEZs ...in
Buthkhambh-Keri and Verna-Loutolim.

It is also a fact that the Meditabs factory was allowed to beginning
setting up shop on the very place that Nilesh Naik lost his life to
prevent Nylon-6.6 from being set up.

The use of the SVM and GBA names by the YFG reminds me of the Konkani
proverb Xent kadd ani ambear mar. Ambo poddlo zalear poddlo. Xent
ghellem zalear ghellem [mening Take something insignificant or handy
and throw it at the mango on the tree. You are lucky if the mango
falls and lose nothing if the insgnificant thing is lost. ] One does
not lose anything by names dropping if ab initio one does not have
credibility worth a cent!

The admonition from the Book of Revelations or Apocalypse may not be
out of place here: So then because you are LUKEWARM, neither hot nor
cold, I spit you out. [Rev3:16] Dr. Pratap Naik sj said similar words
to the alleged lovers of Konkani in Goa on 19 December, 2007.

I believe the journalists need to do some thinking, not just blind
reporting that some of them have got used to ;-)

Once this SEZ business is over, Siddanath Buyao and I will be on the
same side fighting FOR Roman script to be included. Soter D' Souza and
even Matanhy Saldanha will be with us. Some of the elements in the GBA
will perhaps be on the other side of the fence with the Devanagri ONLY
proposition.

Politics in Goa is not like football with permanent teams and end
of the season inter-club transfers. It is like a game of
koinddo-ball, with players shifting allegiance in the course of a day.
Kolloi? Kolloi tujem sondd!!

consonance with the stated objectives and rules of play of the GBA. I

It took me by surprise this morning that local newspapers could write
such headlines as Differences among anti-SEZ groups comes to the fore
at Verna meeting or a sub-head like Anti-SEZ groups fail to close
ranks below a correct headline Lukewarm response to YFG meet. Was
anything different expected by the journalists sold on the malicious
PROPAGANDA of the Youth for Goa leaders [read GT of 19 Dec, 2007
page 3 Column 1 report entitled 'Youth for Goa' to hold public meet
first four paragraphs for details.]. Did they really expected the
avowedly APOLITICAL groupings like SEZ Virudhi Manch [SVM] and Goa
Bachao Abhiyan [GBA] leaders to represent their Civil Society
Organisations [CSOs] at the JUNIOR DIVISION meeting of the GMAS that
goes under the banner of YFG ??

Both, the GBA and the SVM have publicly declared, orally and in Press
Notes, that they will NOT share a platform with any known politician.
It is for this SOLE reason that Prashant Naik [General Secretary of
UGDP to which Matanhy belongs], the compere of the GBA rally at Azad
Maidan on 18 December, 2006, had to leave the CSO. It is
for this sole reason that I am a member of the GBA and have associated
with the SVM, though not yet shared the dais with them.

The CAUSE is important, not the Dais. GBA and SVM members, including
those spearheading the two CSOs, were PRESENT IN STRENGTH in the
AUDIENCE at the Azad Maidan on 18 December, 2007, at at the rally
organised by GMAS. The number of people at the rally was not all due
to the GMAS, though they may like to think of it differently. The GBA

Dear Dr.Santosh Helekar,

Thank you for the statement of fact. There are many Goanetters who
behave like Goebels and believe that a lie, oft repeated, becomes the
truth. It does not.

Chinmay Bhandare tries to project me as a Communist/Marxist. Far be it
from me. I am a Christian and, hence, I believe in God. The communists
do not believe in God.

I do not subscribe to the many fallacies that the Roman Catholic
Church propagates as Dogmas simply because there is no rational
justification for that. That is as unChristian as the social disparity
that the Hierarchy tolerates, nay, promotes. So, while trying to be a
good Christian, I am often at odds with Catholicism. Unlike what many
think, the two are not the same thing.

God and Communism/Marxism is like SVM and GMAS ..the two do not mix ;-)

If anyone can refer me to the proof of what he or she says, there is
no reason to believe that I will not accept it . even if I held
the contrary view till date. I do not share the views of those who
made Galileo recant.

Mog asundi.

Hi Santosh,
I mostly tend to agree with you, but this time I fail to do so.
Presumably you are living in Goa (sorry if it is otherwise), the below does
not apply to Muslims. I have Muslim friends and I know them well. When the twin
towers were blown out and they knew the Muslims had done it they were
overjoyed, when the reality struck, they soon changed their tune. I say this to
their faces, and endless discussion ensues.
Now, my friends are saying to me that the Americans did it themselves.
This to me is not cafeteria religious belief.
  ED.

Dear Chinmay,
I don't think what you say is true today. Today most
religious believers apply the cafeteria approach to
their religion. They pick and choose what is good and
reject what is bad about their religion. They also do
not believe in the literal truth of most of their
religious beliefs, especially those that contradict
perceived reality.

Dear Cornel,

I respond to your 'closing reflections,' not the issue I've already said
I will not engage in. I read your scholarly post (by length) with great
interest. I wish you well in that singular crusade you self-avowedly
have chosen to launch on: abolishing the caste system, even if only
selectively among Goan 'Catholic' .. the words? ... bamons, Chadis.
Bang 'em hard, brother (if you deign, incl our Goan Hindu brethren.)
The rest of India will be too hot for all your sides.

I wish you well in your crusade. I think I belong to the same objective,
though certainly not by the means of achieving it.

Even Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho, did whatever on horseback
(let's not get into who was being unjust ... D.Quixote or the horses) and
here we have you, a quarter of the way round the globe, ensconced in your
comforts as no one should grudge, declaring war on tiny Goa's castes, er..
Catholic Goa's castes!

Easy to attack the 'catholic' church in Goa -- be sure no one will contend,
much less rebut. Despite your long absence / alienation from local soil,
am pretty sure you heard one of those quaint local proverbs ...
easy to dig where the soil is soft.

I can only pray that some day when the Goan Catholic anti-casteists --
absentee by large measure -- are down on a patronising vacation, and a
wayward daughter slips into love with a local 'Mhar,' 'Chamar' or migrant,
parents like you will walk their talk.

Practice what they preached, so condescendingly, to poor little native
Goans, from their high pedestals across the oceans.

For heaven's sake, if you think you can reform Goa in howsoever big or
small a measure, come down here and do it. Only a minuscule minority fraction
of Goa's current population (migrants included) has decent access to
internet connectivity, and would be in a position to read your enlightened
e-mail discourses. Most of what you preach from the high pulpit of cyberspace
will not trickle down to the target area. You and your comrades need to come
down here and do something.

I can only hope you are serious. Do have a joyous Christmas before you can
churn that.

'The Golden Compass' is anti-Christian: Vatican
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Dec 21 (IANS) The Vatican has slammed the new movie The Golden
Compass and asked New Line film studio not to distribute it.
The film, based on a novel of the same name by Philip Pullman, has topped the
box office in Britain but the Catholic church called it anti-Christian and
cold. The Vatican has issued a statement saying it hoped New Line would abandon
the idea of filming the sequels, reports contactmusic.com.

The statement said: In Pullman's world, hope simply does not exist because
there is no salvation but only personal, individualistic capacity to control
the situation and dominate events.

It further called the movie the most anti-Christian film possible. The film
portrays the church as an orthodox dictatorship, which conducts cruel
experiments on children and tries to suppress free will.

INDIA RISING OR SHINING ?

Averthanus L. D’Souza.

So, the expected has happened! L.K. Advani has been nominated
as the Prime Ministerial candidate by the B.J.P. ahead of the expected
general elections early next year. This has been accompanied by the usual
rhetoric about the hard-line versus the soft-line Hindutva. The media
has already begun to dissect the already desiccated theme of Hindutva. It
is a great pity that the Media cannot find anything more interesting or more
important to discuss than Advani’s emergence as the future P.M. of India.
Of course, this has always been his one great consuming ambition, and he is
grabbing at the straw of gaining immortality.

The sad thing about this, of course, is that the ordinary
citizen, who has more important matters on his mind, is being subjected to
all the inanities about the future of Advani, and the future of the BJP
instead of the future of India.

A recent discussion on NDTV about the ‘new slogan’ of Advani
about India Rising made one wonder whether the obvious talents of the young
NDTV team cannot be put to more productive use.The attempt to analyse
the previous slogan of ‘India Shining’ which ‘bombed’ (to use the term
employed by the moderator of the discussion) became so boring and
directionless that it left the viewer wondering whether the time could not
have been spent in a more entertaining way.

Advani very magnanimously admitted that his espousal of the
India Shining propaganda was a mistake. He made feeble attempts to try to
find the reasons why it led to the BJP becoming the laughing stock of the
entire country, and of the whole world. He gave several reasons, none of
which, was sensible or convincing. As an alternative he now proposes to
popularize the new slogan of ‘India Rising’. This, he hopes, will not only
redound to his personal glory, but that it will also serve to resuscitate
the fortunes of the BJP.One is reminded of the puppy which after failing
to get at the marrow inside the bone from one end, then tries to get at it
from the other end.The end result, of course, remains exactly the same.
The marrow remains unattainable. With all the political experience at his
disposal, Advani should have realized that the shift in sloganeering will
not change the fortunes of the BJP – or of himself, for that matter. One
begins to wonder about the ability of Advani to lead the BJP when he seems
to be losing his grip on simple and obvious reality.Merely changing a
slogan does not – and will not – change the reality which the BJP represents
– an antiquated and irrelevant political ideology which is completely out of
sync with modern times.Whether India shines or whether India Rises, the
BJP will not be able take credit for it because the BJP is backward
looking and is seeking to drag India back into the Dark Ages of fascism and
totalitarianism. The fact that fascism has become passé and that in a
modern world which is rapidly globalizing, there is no place for a Hindutva
ideology (whether “hard” or “soft”) does not seem to attract the attention
of a hard-boiled politician and his cohorts.

In a recent response to queries from media persons, Advani is
reported to have said that the Prime Minister (Dr. Manmohan Singh) does not
understand politics. The response of the common citizen is: “Thank God for
this”. Dr. Manmohan Singh is a man of intellectual achievements of
international stature, and is respected for his ability to see issues
without the coloured glasses through which people like Advani view the
world. In sharp contrast to the blinkered view of people like L.K. Advani,
Dr. Manmohan Singh is able to transcend the limitations of political
ideology and to preside over the renaissance of India as a respected member
of the international community. If India is rising, or even if it is
shining, it is due to the intellectual leadership of statesmen like Dr.
Manmohan Singh and his core team of academics who are charting the economic
and political future of this great country. We citizens of India are
grateful that Manmohan Singh, who did not aspire to political office,
finally accepted the offer to become Prime Minister, and that he has not
been affected by the power which, as Lord Acton declared, corrupts people.

The root cause of Goa's critical state of health is unhesitatingly a
corruption and precipitous fall in the moral standards of our politics and
public life. Today on issues like Regional Plan, SEZ, Food Park, IT Park,
Land Acquisition, IFFI, etc every single Goan is washing leaders of ruling
congress party of Goa without even applying soaps!

Knowing this fully well, the shameless peddlers of Congress Party (CP) and
their followers in Goa are still traversing length and breadth of Goa
propagating the gospel of venal corruption. Statements and pronouncements
like corruption is preferable to communalism, corruption is lesser evil
than communalism, communalism is infinitely worse than corruption,
corruption is reversible while communalism causes irreversible damages,
corruption is not a public issue, corruption cases against CP leaders are
nothing but political vendetta are ringing loud in the newspapers and
electronic media almost every day. So much so that even some of the educated
thinkers appears to be working over time to sanctify corruption and give
respectability to CP leaders and their affiliates, who are facing charges of
bribery, criminal misconduct and misappropriation of public funds.

Afflicted by this virus and emboldened by the weakness and meekness of our
judicial process, several other political entities have entered this
bandwagon and are flooding the media. These statements sanctifying
corruption and giving certificates to its avid practitioners cannot be
allowed to go unchallenged and unquestioned. While the ills of communalism
are known and should be countered effectively, it need to be realized that
corruption is like AIDS which sucks up and destroys the basic value system
on which a society is founded and has no cure if allowed to go beyond a
certain stage. Furthermore, unbridled corruption in government and public
life could be a major causative factor in instigating and inflaming communal
passions and disturbances. Besides, corruption, by slowing down economic
development and accelerating poverty, is a major factor in causing and
sustaining social inequalities and tensions.

Turning to economic development, corrupt practices have proved highly
detrimental in achieving modernization ideals. Its prevalence has raised
strong obstacles and inhibitions to development. It has decreased respect
for and allegiance for the government and its institutions. It has even
promoted irrationality in planning and has limited the horizons of plans.
The corruption being spurred by fragmentation of loyalties has acted against
efforts to consolidate Goa.
Goa, ranking 3rd among the most corrupt states in India, has witnessed the
dangers of collapsing politically and economically on many occasions only
for allowing corruption to survive and sustain itself in the system of
governance. Besides this, corrupt politicians, more typically congress
leaders, under pretext of secularism have very shrewdly injected, within
Goa's social fabric, conflicts between individualism vs. communalism, greed
vs. sharing, formal vs. informal dealings, the willingness to view life as
dispensable vs. our love for humanity, and religion vs. spirituality. The
net result of all these implanted conflicts are an irreversible multiple
damages within the peace loving communities of Goa. History of Goa very
clearly says that CP ruled and is ruling Goa without a backbone - All that
CP knows is corruptions and nothing else - It is also equally surprising to
see CP in Goa is bending twice before Karnataka lady whose intention is to
sell Goa for personal monitory gains.

Now let's have a closer look on other aspects of corruption. Corruption has
resulted in undermining Macroeconomic stability due to the loss of
government revenue, excessive spending and leakages. It has increased the
costs of doing business and small firms have started bearing a
disproportionately large share of these costs - small entrepreneurs are
badly affected. It has also compromised on pollution norms pushing the
environment in danger. The poor community has already started suffering the
most since they are getting to low quality public goods and services,
leaving no exit options. There is a negative correlation between the level
of corruption and the level of investment in the economy. This has severely
constrained economic growth and employment generation. Large-scale
corruption has also been

Meet and greet the peerless Cajetan Godinho, popularly known as 'Caji' to his
friends and admirers. The only child in the family, Caji belongs to the stuff
that dreams are made of because, at the scholastic age, he captained the
famous A.A. de Majorda Football Club.
After his academic career, Caji joined the Marmagoa Port Trust (MPT) in 1979,
as a football player and, was about to make a debit for MPT in Western India
Football Federation's (WIFE) most prestigious Rovers Cup Tournament when fate
winged him to Kuwait.
Thereafter, there was no turning back. Caji joined the then celebrated Goan
Sport in 1979, when the expatriate soccer was in its nascent stages on the Soor
Grounds. Caji continued with the Goan Sporting until it was disbanded in 1995.
With Caji's dazzling midfield display, Goan Sporting had the unique honour of
being the first club, to win the very first coveted
UG Shield in the inaugural United Goans Tournament in Kuwait. Goan Sporting
also basked in the glory of being the first, to win the late Ida Memorial
Football Trophy after the liberation of Kuwait.

Caji strides the Soor Grounds like a colossus. A midfield maestro with
mercurial thrusts, Caji displays superb ball control, dexterous ball
deflections and his exactitude in powerful long range shots make him the
'karma' (nemesis) of goal keepers. A free kick specialitst with lethal
potential, Caji is also gifted with a rare and incomparable ability to hit the
bull's
eye with amazing 'spiral shots' taken straight from the flag kicks. Tactically
astute, when Caji is in possession of the ball, his opponents rarely get a
chance to shift from the first gear, paving way for him to unleash unexpected
sizzlers with devastating effect.

A former coach of the Kuwait National Soccer Team, the great Brazilian Carlos
Alberto presiding as chief guest in 1984, praised Caji as a 'wonderful player'
and presented him the The Best Player Award in the finals of the late Ida
Memorial Football Tournament on
the Soor Grounds.

Caji is endowed with a flint personality, patience and perseverance and
captained the first ever Goa XI verses Kerala XI at the Fahaheel Stadium in
1990. He was also honoured with a Fair Play Award in 1995, at a friendly
match between Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) selection and the famous
Al-Arabi Sports Club of Kuwait. As late as in 2001, Caji was decorated with the
title of Athlete of the Year by the CRC Chinchinim in Kuwait. Caji's sports
resume flaunts with lots of accolades and awards. When asked the secret of his
success, Caji humbly replied, love, dedication, discipline and it is
precisely these
traits that make him the super nova to cross the Silver Jubilee portals of his
outstanding and
unblemished football career on the nostalgic Soor Grounds.

Goa-World.Com adds:

Caji - the never aging most respected man on Soor Ground continues his love
for 'football' and is a shining example and inspiration to the young and the
old among the Indian football players and officials.
Caji deserves special accolades and honour considering his unique record in
Kuwait's expatriate football history - never receiving any warning card or
disciplinary action from the 'men in black' for the last 28 years!
Cheers to that, we are proud to have 'the pearl' amongst our midst!
A staunch Konkani lover, his poems has been published on the Internet and
print media (Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter, Goanet, Daaiz.com, www.goa-world.com, The
Goan Review, etc.)
