Air India Express cancels its Goa flights

Dubai (PTI): Air India Express, the low-cost subsidiary of Indian Airlines
catering mainly to middle east countries, has cancelled its operations from UAE
to Goa, a week after opening its seat bookings for the Indian state. The
budget airline was scheduled to operate its flights to Goa from June 18 thrice
a week, to cater to the nearly 500,000 Goans who live in the UAE. The
airline, however said the people who had booked their tickets will either get a
complete refund or will be provided alternative arrangements, a gulf daily
reported. "Those who had purchased their tickets from us are not that large
in numbers. We are right now working out options so that they do not waste even
a single day and are able to travel to Goa," Jayshree Ramchandran, marketing
Manager of AIE, was quoted as saying by the Gulf news. Currently Indian
airlines operate direct flights to Goa twice a week. Indian, which used to
operate thrice a week direct flights to the state, had also
stopped its operations as of March 30 due to low seat bookings. One of the
reasons being cited for the airline's shelving of its operations is load
sustainability after the peak season comes to an end, the daily said. "The
peak season is from June to December but after that the question is whether or
not our flights will operate in its full capacity. Indian already has two
flights going to Goa per week and if we were to operate three flights the total
number of flights to the state will be five," said Ramchandran.

[Goanet] Gulf Goans Support

2008-06-14 Thread Arwin Mesquita
Dear Cedrico

Thanks for your feedback. I have no where said that the Gulf Authorities are
not doing the right thing for their Land & people. In fact they are right in
protecting their interests.

The Point is that the Gulf is not what it used to be for Goans; as they are
protecting their Land, Identity & Interests, we should be doing the same for
ourselves.

Dear Arwin,

As a fellow Goan working hard in the Gulf, I totally
agree with your writings...but i guess somewhere you
contradict yourself...

*** --- you complain about localisation in the Gulf
--- well why not? the country doesnt belong to us, but
we are allowed to come here and work, nobody called
us, we came for our own benefits...

that's why i guess we are here...Gulf Goans! as you
call them...yet we are expats here...accept the fact!

so you are still allowed to come and work in the gulf,
start a business etc...all fair!

*** --- in your post you also talk about -- saving Goa
for Goans?

so when it comes to your land...you sing a different
tune?

Apply the same logic...work out the math...

Dalit Christians ask church to stop conversion drive

New Delhi, June 6, 2008:  The Dalit Christians on Friday asked the Church
leadership to stop fraudulent conversion in India among Dalits and Tribals. And
it further demand that the foreign funds received by the church be used for the
welfare and upliftment of the poor Christians who are suffering from the
discrimination. The convention strongly urged the Govt of India not to appoint
Bishops, priests and nuns in the government commissions and committed but
instead it should appoint ordinary Christians. These and many other demands are
raised in a resolution adopted at the national conventions organized by the
Poor Christian Liberation Movement (PCLM) headed by R.L.Francis.

The convention urged the “Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) and the
National Christian Council of India (NCCI) to set up a 1000 crore “Dalit
Christian Development” fund to ensure integrated social and economic
development.

Considering the confusion created by the propagation activities in the far
flung areas the convention adopted a resolution urging the church authorities
to defer the mass conversion programme. The resolution stated that, “This
assembly unanimously believes that evangelism cannot be a measurement of a
society’s socio-economic development. Therefore, evangelism programme should be
suspended for long years and funds should be saved and utilized for the welfare
of Dalits and Trible Christians and deprived sections of society for creating
awareness among them.”

The resolution also demanded reservation of seats for Dalit and Trible
Christians as well as other Dalits in Church-run schools, colleges, technical
institutions and other vocational organizations.

Three hundred delegates from different parts of the country, who attended the
convention, alleged that a handful of priests and bishops were monopolizing the
Church funds and property in the country. This has led to the worsening
conditions of   neo converted Christians were living in a pitiable
condition and deprived of the basic necessities.

In his address, the National President R.L. Francis said that the church
leadership is interested only in increasing the numbers and is hardly bothering
about their living conditions. The biggest proof of this was that a large chunk
of foreign funds were being utilized either for purchasing land and for the
luxurious lifestyles of few Christians leaders in India . Bishops are
monopolizing the Church estates and treating it as their own property and are
indulging in its sale-purchase without the consent of the community,” he
alleged.

Mr. Jawahar Singh, President Gertor India Foudiotian said 90 per cent to the
maids working in cantt and its surrounding areas are Dalit and Trible
Christians. Their children do not even complete their primary education, he
said. Mr. Singh said that when he went to the priest of the church in the area
to discuss the issue of maids and their children; he refused to say anything.

Mr. P B Lomeo, Christian activist and editor of a church newspaper, alleged
that not one of the 40,000 educational institutions run by the church give
admission to the children of Dalit Christians. The PCLM, which was launched to
help Dalit and Trible Christians and provide them with a platform to express
their grief, is the most powerful for them, Mr.Lomeo said.

Fr. William Premdass Chaudhary a catholic priest of the  Archdiocese of
Delhi said  that “ in last two decades many poor Christians have gone back
to Hinduism due to maltreatment by the church. “Even myself was treated bad fly
as I am local Christian and not given any assiyment by Bishop of Delhi Catholic
Archdiocese because I am a Dalit and local Priest.” he further stated.

Mr. Balbir Punj, a senior BJP think tank and member of Rajya SAbha
suggested that the Church in India should honestly make a model for the
progress of Dalits Christians. He also called for moratorium on conversion for
the next ten years.

Raising the question of future of Christian children in India , well known
human rights activist Joseph Gathia urged the Govt of India and the Supreme
Court to redefine minority educational institutions. He further demanded
declassification of those Christian minority institutions   who do
not admit Christian’s children in their schools.
Mr. Joseph Gathia opposed the caste base reservation for Christian community in
India as it would institutionalize the discrimination in Christianity which is
against its very basic principle. Such a move would darken the future of poor
Christina’s children in India .

At National Convention, Mr. Meharban James, Bishop R.B.Sandu, Mr. Ashok Bharti,
P.N. Ambdker and others express their views reading

[Goanet] Friday the Thirteen

2008-06-14 Thread William & Judaline Alphonso
Hi, the rains on Friday the 13th just inspired me to write this poem. I'd
like to share it with all you Goanetters.

Friday the Thirteen

We all agree, this day is most dreaded my most,

In the young old days, it was linked to ghosts.

What is it about this day, that people fear?

Various thinks from people and on radios we hear;

making Friday the thirteen a day, not wanting to be anywhere near.

This day in 2008 dawned just like any other day;

Off to work, people woke up, and were on their way.

I didn't hear anything unusual that did happen;

which my fears of Friday the Thirteen did dampen.

In Business, we were lucky; all went well I must say;

tired, we returned home, and on the couch we lay.

The evening was calm and very peaceful;

Gradually the wind started to blow, a little cool.

The rain came down and soothing was the sound 'pitter-patter, pitter-patter';

It just makes us feel great, and about nothing else to matter.

Suddenly ! It was like the sky broke loose;

The roaring thunder sent people running, leaving behind their shoes.

Oh ! Those large streaks of lightening;

Sometimes to the eye was blinding.

My family and I got down on our knees and began to pray;

I silently asked god "Is this Friday the Thirteen our last day?"

In doing so, I realized that my God I had offended;

As we all know, that is not how the day ended.

Friday the Thirteenth is just another regular day;

Happy, lively and positive, I must say.

Dear Rajan bab, I am not only knowing how to read but I am also knowing how to
read between the lines. First I was only expressing possibilities, now I am
sure. It cannot be simple coincidence that two people who are always criticisng
GBA are finding a name called GPA.

Yesterday night I read website www.peacefulsociety.org and I found that they
are Mahatma Gandhi's followers. So why are they doing program in Air
conditioned Convention Hall. What game is this? Soter is always writing against
GBA, but why he is not leaving GBA if only he is the good person there and
the rest are rascals. Maybe he is waiting for GPA to be born.

Rajan bab I am not against your GPA. But you must be open like you are always
and tell why you are choosing the name. Peaceful Society must tell why they are
using their Gandhi notes on ac hall of Mandovi. Otherwise Soter must tell who
is spending for this function.

GOAN JOURNOS-2
By Valmiki Faleiro

I know my drawing a nexus between creativity and intoxication would have drawn
ample
puritan disdain last Sunday. But, indeed, look at the world of creative
artists. Save the
rare exceptions, almost everyone needed a ‘high’ to bring out the best from
within. From
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, to Frank Sinatra, to Jimmy Hendrix.

Journalists also need to be ‘creative,’ and that creates a thirst for
intoxicants. It used to,
in olden days. The story is told of the great AB Nair, as brilliant a
journalist as he was a
tippler. All his editorials could not stop then Chief Minister of the Bombay
Presidency,
Morarji Desai, from imposing Prohibition. The day that happened, all of Nair’s
junior
colleagues wondered how he would survive without the cup that cheers. Next
morning,
as Nair walked in, the air was heavy with Eau de Cologne. He had not liberally
dabbed
himself with it. He reeked of it. The alcohol in the Eau helped.

Volumes could be filled with hilarious anecdotes on Goan journos and booze. I
will
mention just as many as this space permits. When Morarjibhai became Prime
Minister in
1977, Goa’s chief minister Shashikala Kakodkar, already on a shaky wicket from
within,
had to curry favours with Delhi. As a curtain raiser to total prohibition, she
severely
curtailed the alcohol / beer quota to Goa’s then tiny overland pockets of Daman
and Diu,
in Morarjibhai’s home region of Gujarat. Goans were aghast.

Dr. KSK Menon, Editor of a Goan newspaper, asked his budding cartoonist (not
sure if it
was Dr. Subodh Kerkar) to do a piece on the subject. The following day, the
cartoon
showed a scene at a bar in Daman. A customer orders, “Half peg beer.” The
bartender
enquires, “With or without soda, Sir?”

Alfred Tavares (I prefer calling him “Chacha”) was Chief Reporter of ‘Goa
Monitor.’ One
cats-and-dogs rainy July, he spent almost the entire day at either Bar
Fernandes or Pio.
Dusk approached, and Chacha had not filed a single story. Chums in tow, he
rushed to
his room at Panjim’s Tourist Hostel, to freshen up and dash off the day’s
stories. In he
went to shower, to emerge only moments later, dry as a bone, towel around his
waist.
Rolled paper into the typewriter and furiously began punching that famous
opener for the
next day’s headline … “Water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink!”

When I reported for the ‘West Coast Times’ (1978-79) from Margao, I had two
buddies
from the Marathi segment. One, of medium build, was better adept at ferreting
out drinks
than news. The other, just about a metre tall and rather plump, was better at
producing
notes (of the Reserve Bank of India’s stationery variety) than news copy. In
true Bernard
Shaw-Chesterton traditions, one couldn’t stand sight of the other. Both were my
friends.
The diminutive guy once likened the other to a dog, who follows whosoever shows
not a
bone, but a bottle. The other retorted, “put some currency notes in the mouth
of that
bottle and you’ll have two dogs following it.”

A drunken journo can be harmless, but a combination with an inebriated MLA can
be
volatile. It was a rainy afternoon in the early 1980s, when I was covering the
Goa
Assembly, then in session, for a national daily. A fiery debate on the Bicholim
floods
ended in an adjournment. Everybody knew that a famous mineowner’s rejects had
silted
the river, causing the floods. But, not a single MLA dared utter the name of
the miner,
despite legislative immunity.

This apparently annoyed our spirited journo, who in the Assembly lobby loudly
taunted a
“coward” MLA, who was equally ‘spirited’ and often snored when in his seat. The
MLA
warned the journo. The journo dared the MLA. Out went a shower of fists to the
face of
the journo, who did not, or perhaps could not, retaliate. I quickly asked my
stocky friend,
Dilkush Dessai, to intervene. Before the journalist could get a worse
battering, Dilkush
grabbed his fellow-MLA until he cooled down.

Like technology, a lot seems to have changed for Goa’s journos. A kind of a
paradigm
shift. None of the younger generation journos, or at least the ones I
personally know,
either drink or smoke. It is significant that the unofficial Press Club in
Panjim today is not
Bar Fernandes nor Bar Pio, but the sedate Café Prakash opposite the Azad Maidan.
Perhaps, as one would think, they were born drunk. But, seriously, to me,
today’s
teetotaler Goan journos are sufficient reason to raise a glass in sincere toast.

2008-06-14 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad

This is in reply to Message No. 13, dated 14th June 2008 by Satyawan
Govenkar under subject as mentioned above.

Satyawan, you are sincere, no second opinion about this. But before you let
your steam out please read what I have written below (and don't accuse me
saying I am for mining lobby or other lobbies). I share below mentioned
information because you are hard core Goan.

Organization in any form, in any shape and in any name (like
GBA..GPA...OR..G(x)A., etc) should be welcomed by all Goans as long as the
true motive of that organization is to save Goa (not like save Goa party).
And if that organization is not doing what they were suppose to do, all
Goans must raise their voices and or their views to see that an organization
working against Goa's interest is cut to its roots. This is my principal and
I stand by it. No matter who says what or who writes what!!

Having written this, I welcome the formation of GPA though I don't know the
actual structure of this outfit. Basically with what ever little information
I have read on GPA it appears to be good for Goa.

Now let me share some new developments taken place which are quite
detrimental to Goa. It's conclusively true that one Aam Admi in the name of
his classmate Mr. K. A. has strike a deal worth Rs 300 Crores in buying
entire property (scattered in 3 different areas) of Mr. L's family (it's big
family with lots of claimants within family). This Aam Admi in the past had
managed to convert property holding of Mr. K. A. at Dona Paula to the tune
of 10,000 sq. mts. Just find out were this property is and who is enjoying
fruits of this property presently. In this connection please have a linking
study done about present agitations at Dona Paula (though it's cooled down
during rainy season)!!!

The same Aam Admi is also operating - a ready hot mix - manufacturing
company from Canacona . This unit sends out nothing less than 70 truck loads
full of ready hot mix per day and the net turnover is nothing less than 3
Crores per month.

Same Aam Admi has even brought chunk of property behind old RTO office at
Margao.

Is not this a BIG issue?
Is not this achievement of that Aam Admi disproportionate of his declared
income?
Is not this what we have to target?
Is not this what we have to take up and see that all persons are treated in
the same way as that Aam Admi?

Therefore I welcome any new outfit as long as these outfits also keep a tag
on such Aam Admis'

Best regards,

[Goanet] LIMERICK FOR THE DAY 131 - FUTURE FOR GOAN YOUTH

2008-06-14 Thread Shanti Dhoot
FUTURE FOR GOAN YOUTH

The Padre Conceicao College of Engineering should be felicitated,

And all who wish well for Goa should be genuinely elated,

To hear the news that this college,

Not only imparts skills and knowledge,

But has also for its students, opportunities for employment created.

It proves that Goan students are in no way less capable

Than their peers elsewhere and sussegad as a label,

Is inappropriate for the younger generation,

If at all it was justified for the general Goan population.

Such news will for other youth, their ambitions enable.

The mining magnates who have already entered the educational field,

As also others in Goa that have done well, are now well-heeled,

Should take more interest in our village youth,

Who are undeniably and in truth,

As good as any others, and ensure the urban-rural divide is not congealed.

PANAJI: It is a first for an engineering college in Goa. A foreign company
has conducted campus interviews and recruited students. Four of the 260
students who will be graduating from the Padre Conceicao College of
Engineering (PCCE), Verna, this year have been recruited by British company
Tedmur. Vishal Nagwekar, Mandar Pawar, Prassan Kamat and Joshua Dias have
been offered jobs by the company at its Qatar branch as technical design and
research engineers.
All four students belong to the mechanical engineering branch and will be
carrying out research on air-conditioning and earn a salary of Rs 5.08 lakh
per annum. Niyan Marchon, the head of the training and placement cell of the
college, said it is also the first year that all 260 students of a batch
have secured placements through the campus with top companies in the
country. "Over the last four years, the college has witnessed a surge in the
number of companies participating in the placement activity. This year, the
companies had more jobs to offer than we had students. Now, with the
participation of a foreign company, the students are in for exciting times."

The college offers 60 seats each for degrees in computer engineering,
electronics and telecommunication engineering, mechanical engineering and
information technology. This year 260 students have been offered 265 jobs
from industry majors such as Infosys, WiproTech, Cognizant, Siemens, Tech
Mahindra, HSBC, TCS, IBM, Vedanta, Sulzer, MRF, Tata Autocomp, Videocon,
Putzmeister, Sasken, L&T Infotech, Persistent Systems, L & T Engineering,
Mahindra and Mahindra, Godrej, Anglo Eastern Shipping Co. etc. To top it
all, 136 students of the college's 2008-09 batch have already been
recruited.

[Goanet] FERVENT APPEAL: A ...letter addressed to Home Minister Ravi Naik (The Goan Observer)

2008-06-14 Thread Goanet News
FERVENT APPEAL: A reader sent us this letter addressed to
Home Minister Ravi Naik.

SOURCE: Goan Observer, Panjim June 14-20, 2008

Your Excellency,

I am writing to your exalted self in order to protest the
publication in the Goa print media of numerous letters by
ungrateful whining Brits, who whinge endlessly about how hard
life is for them here and how absolutely beastly the Goa
government treats them.

I want you to know, Sir, that we are not all like that. I
feel honoured and priviledged to be breathing the same air as
one so magnificent as yourself. I think that Goa is the most
beautiful country in the known universe.

Goans are the hardest working people on the planet. They are
the salt of the earth. They are the icing on the cake. The
sauce on the pudding

Goans elect only the most able, most honest, virtuous,
good-looking men to be their leaders, who then strive
tirelessly with no regard for themselves, in the interest of
the people.

The Goan police are toasted the world over for their
independence, unwavering objectivity, fanatical dedication to
duty, their steadfast commitment to justice and, above all,
their honesty.

I think that more Goans should move to the UK to help push up
our house prices and sort out our garbage problems.

Er, what else? Quick! Feni is the finest alcohol beverage to
every pass my lips. Fish-curry-rice has no culinary equal.
Bull-fighting should be an Olympic sport.

Is this enough? Now, can I have a visa? Please?

Yours in grovelling servitude,

Andy Butkiss,
Sea View Cottage,
Candolim.

[Goanet] Goa People's Assembly

2008-06-14 Thread Diogo DSouza
Dear Goanetters,

What is all this confusion? Which Dr. Rajan? One Rajan is photgrapher, other
Rajan is Editor. Is Rajan Cunciolienkar, Supdt of GMC a doctor? I thought he
was a bureacrat from Secretariat. Why Goan Observer write nothing about GPA?
Otherwise that Rajan write tomorrow's story yesterday!

Why will GPA be like Lok Shakti? I thought Lok shakti was an Advertising Agency
for NRI Goan professionals like Rajan, and that Virgincar fellow who used to
write sometinmes on goanet before. I think Floriano can guide us. He somehow
knows all these rascals.

How come Rajan Parikar become Director in Peaceful Society? I thought there was
some Kumar or someone in Peaceful Society, or was that Satan Sonsta or
something in Ponda that is doing all the anti-Muslim exhibitions and
anti-Narkasur or Diwali protests every year?

Best wishes,

Rajan bab had got angry with me because I said that GBA is good. Now he is
doing another group called GPA. GBA - GPA. It cannot be just like that. I am
going to come and see which activists are going to come to do air conditioned
activism in Hotel Mandovi Hall. Maybe Nova Goa was not available.
Anyway it is good if this GPA will first look at the illegal construction of
the Convention Hall of Mandovi, and then they will look at Conversion of
riverfront space meant for sitting for old and young people into Riveiara Event
Deck. And last there is mining by the Kenis.
We Goans will not be cheated like this by politicians. This GPA will be another
Lok Shakti. Only sad thing is good people like Rajan are wasting their time and
money on them. Dr Rajan will be another Dr Francis Colaco. Good man in wrong
place.

BJP's Signature Campaign to oust Governador

I recently read about Porrikar's latest gimmick of
collecting signatures and submitting to the
President...

Well first he tried to unsuccessfully topple the

then he sold coconuts

now the signature campaign?

If one remembers how the BJp under Porrikar faked
Philip Neri;'s signature, will any one believe that
this signature campaign is genuine?

Well...I wished Porrikar took up...as a leader of
opposition relevant people's causes than trying to get

What will be good is if you first learnt to read.
Nowhere has it been said that the Goa People's
Assembly is a "group." It is exactly what the
name suggests: an Assembly, a gathering of
people belonging to diverse groups and platforms:
men & women with ideas coming together with
the hope that a cohesive resistance may emerge
to save Goa from impending ruin.

Also - you seem to be good at offering critiques
of the activities of others fighting for the good cause.
If you do not like what we are trying to do, or have
problems with our choice of venue etc etc, please
go ahead with your own initiatives. I look
forward to learning from the example you will
set.

Re: [Goanet] Sharad Pawar should sack Narvenkar

2008-06-14 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar
Cedric,

It was not the BJP government that did not take action against Narvenkar.
There was a judicial enquiry and there was a scathing report against him.
Based on that report, he should not even have been an MLA.
Then the BJP was thrown out of power and the 1st action taken by
Pratapsingh Rane as CM, was to throw the judicial enquiry out of the window!

There is too much at stake for Narvenkar at this time too. If he loses his post
as Vice President of BCCI, he loses access to the cash of the richest sports
organization in India, and perhaps in the world. He has a lot of bigwigs and
more corrupt people like Sharad Pawar supporting him.

Every Goan knows that the ticket scam was his doing and yet he got away
unscathed. Only time will tell if the present case and the judiciary process
has any teeth this time around!

[Goanet] Goa People's Assembly on Construction, Conversion & Mining (Monday, June 16 in Panjim)

Please come if you are in Goa.

*
The Goa People's Assembly will be held on Monday, June 16,
to address the issue: "Construction, Conversion & Mining - A
threat to Goa's survival" at Hotel Mandovi, Panjim, from
3.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. It is open to the public. The event
is being facilitated by the Centre for Panchayati Raj - Peaceful
Society, Kundaim.

The programme will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a screening of
the photo documentary "The Rape of Goa" by Rajan P. Parrikar.
Following the screening, activists, leaders and representatives
of various people's movements drawn from all over Goa will
address this People's Assembly on the menace of rampant
concretization, conversion of land, and the havoc wrought by
mining, that is threatening the very survival of Goa.

Well-known Goan personalities such as Remo Fernandes and
Hema Sardesai will address the Assembly. An Open Forum of
30 minutes will seek participation from the public. Ideas for
future course of action may emerge from the proceedings.

Everyone concerned about Goa's future is urged to attend
this People's Assembly and lend support to the struggle to
save Goa.

A press conference by the Centre for Panchayati Raj has
been scheduled at 6:00 p.m. following the People’s Assembly
at the same venue.

I look
forward to learning from the example you will
set.

jc's comment:

1. I agree with the main thrust of the above post. Every other day,
this Pak and that Bak come on stream only to go down that very stream.
Then come, Dals, Andolans, and some other nonsense. Most Goans (I
believe) don't associate themselves with these "bhaille" names ...and
that is one of the reasons why none of these chaps win or achieve
anything other than a little 'bobbatt'.

2. I agree, Good people in Wrong places.

3. Having decimated the spoken Goan language (Konkani), wiped out the
previously official language in Goa (Portuguese) and destroyed the
Goan system of Communidades - Goans had imposed upon them S-konkani in
devanagri (basically a "bhailli' language to most Goans) and
Engineered Romi Konkani (probably from outer space). The
Maharashtrians were right IMHO. This alleged S-Konkani is a badly
spoken and horribly sounding nasal dialect of Marathi (which is such a
beautiful language). No wonder the MGP wanted to merge Goa with
Maharashtra. No questions of "bhaille" would arise then ...would they?

4. And now we have Goans complaining that "The Bhaille are taking
over" and that "Goans are a minority in their own homeland"!

5. Shutes.what else did you guys expect?

6. Ask yourself these simple questions:

a: Would it have been easier or difficult for the "bhaille" to take
over all facets of Goan life IF the Original Konkani was left in situ?
b: Would it have been easier or difficult for the "bhaille" to take
over all facets of Goan life IF the Portuguese language was left in
situ?
c: Would it have been easier or difficult for the "bhaille" to take
over all facets of Goan life IF the Communidades were left in situ?
d: Would it have been easier or difficult for the "bhaille" to take
over all facets of Goan life IF all Goans had voted against the MGP?
e: Would it have been easier or difficult for the "bhaille" to take
over all facets of Goan life IF all Goans had stood together?

I can understand the naive and uneducated Goans just following
Politicians as Gods/ Social Workers / Philanthropists etc BUT I
cannot understand those who were educated and of means as well as the
lackey journalists.

ALL I can say to those folks is that They are (as equally as the
corrupt & communal politicians) responsible for this destruction of
Goa that Rajan Parrikar has photographically captured.

The following people please take credit for the Goa of today:

1. Genuine Freedom Fighters who made NO plans or arrangements for the
welfare of "1961 Baby" they helped procreate.
2. Goan intellectuals who kept silent while Bandodkar and his MGP were
taking Goa into the path of dissolution.
3. Educated Goans who voted for the MGP and for merger in the Opinion Poll.
4. The MGP for it's selective application of the Mundcar Act.
5. Those who accepted jobs, foreign trips, gifts, favours et all from
politicians in exchange for their tacit support and votes.
6. Those who remained silent after the Communal Video was released.
7. Educated Goans who support Communal and Corrupt political parties.
8. Journalists who remained silent especially the ones who then
criticised those who spoke out.
9. et al

Lambert Mascarenhas, please note ...the Sorrowing Land you knew in
your youth - is Gone! It is replaced by this mess that some call
'Paradise' and others a 'Toilet'.

Goa Thanks you and all the "Lamberts" for your strategic silence when
it mattered most. Hope you guys benefited enough personally to sit
back and say "Amkam Kityak" aka "Why bother, as long as I and my
family are OK"!

just my view

[Goanet] (GoaNet) Proposal to retire Gov't Staff at 58

Proposal to retire govt staff at 58
NT NETWORK
PANAJI — Just as the government employees are all set to proceed on an
indefinite pen down/ tool down strike from June 13, the government is seriously
considering bringing down the retirement age of its employees from 60 to 58, in
order to relieve the state exchequer from the additional burden of Rs 80-odd
crore resulting from bringing parity in the government pay scales. It may be
recalled that the Goa Government Employees Association had demanded parity in
government pay scales

Couple of thoughts on this:

If this does in fact happens -

Younger blood "may" infuse a new purpose and renewed enthusiasm into the system.
Lots of youngsters "may" remain in Goa instead of flooding the exit gates Goa
Goa "may" see the percentage of educated sons-of-the-soil increasing in gov't
positions
Many of the works that now take months and years "may" take shorter time frame.

These are just a few of my humble thoughts. I am sure many of us on this list
will have more to say...

[Goanet] Pound - the enemy!

a photo of Wendell, Hema, Prajal etc at the launch of Goan Solidarity

All the the lettering on the backdrop banner is not legible but the
slogan at the bottom definitely is.

"Pound the enemy!"

Now if they have decided that the GBP (Pound Sterling) is the enemy
then I do declare this a tad bit unfair - what say chaps. Why single
out only the British? What about the Russians, Israelis and
what-have-you?

I suggest they change their slogan to properly reflect their objectives.

[Goanet] Gulf Goans Support

2008-06-14 Thread Arwin Mesquita
Gulf Goans today face many difficulties i.e. declining living standards,
localisation, reduced savings etc. Many contemplate leaving the Gulf soon.
We must take strong interest on Goa's Identity, mega-projects, corruption,
mining, destruction, alarming outsider land sales, uncontrolled migrant
influx etc. We must work with residents to save Goa for Goans; including
future generations. Gulf Goans can help Goa significantly; if only we wake
up immediately and think positively/constructively.

Have we lost hope/belief in ourselves/Goa? Our home is in region (including
China) where the economy is booming vs. others; education (all layers) &
medical are getting international respect. Rich nations are targeting our
region as the future; there is strong demand for Goa by outsiders and
strangely today, we have on a large scale "Entire Well off Gulf Goan
families" migrating; abandoning Goa; selling off properties!! Are we really
a short sighted community in general; lacking a real long term vision? How
much wealth is really enough? Is so much migration really relevant today
and does it not influence the erosion of Goa's Identity? Are western
societies really better off as a whole? Think about identity/value/family
issues that our future generations will face; or is it just the
materialistic things that interest?

Let's stop complaining & looking only at all the negatives of Goa, which are
just excuses for our reluctance to act or to justify today's "debatable"
migration. Surely, Goa also has positives vs. other societies. We should
start from the positives, address the negatives and see how we can together
make Goa, the place we want it to be. I believe we can do it, if we just put
our heads together and look at what we can do and not, what we cannot do!!
After all, there is no place like home.

After the infamous ticket gate scandal, Narvenkar got

Today Narvenkar has not only shamed Goans, his

[Goanet] Stranded Transhipper Finally Towed Out

2008-06-14 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
Goa: Stranded Transhipper Finally Towed Out

Panaji, Jun 13: Friday the 13th proved lucky for Andheri Nagri. It was
fare-well for the transhipper on Caranzalem beach as the tug vessel
Pyarelal successfully pulled it clear from its position and ended its
14-day 'stay' after it drifted to the shore on May 31.

The ship narrowly missed being 'arrested' by the authorities after the
actual operation to pull the bottomless dumb barge weighing 2,800 metric
tonnes approximately, began at 4.30 pm.

After the tug started pulling it around, the operation lasted barely an
hour. This marked the end of high drama at Caranzalem beach involving
the ports administration minister, captain of ports, fishermen and other
officials.

The ports administration Ministry had initiated the process to seize the
vessel on Wednesday, invoking provisions of Indian Ports Acts, 1908 and
the order received the last signature just before the tug started
pulling the 80 mm rope. A police party had been arranged to carry out
the operation to seize the vessel.

Before the ink could dry on the document in the CoP officials' hands,
the ship was already over the waves, sources say.

But sources in the Ministry stated that an inquiry will be initiated to
book the firm owning the vessel in connection with the drifting of the
vessel to the shore, recovery of compensation for losses caused to
fishermen, environmental damage done to the coast under the Environment
Protection Act and other damages that are to be ascertained. The vessel
without any engine is being taken to Jaigad port to safe anchorage, 350
km by road beyond Ratnagiri and 30 hours by sea. "In Jaigad, she will be
in sheltered waters," an official of Salgaocar Mining Industries, the
firm owning the ship said. Times of India was first to report the
appearance of the vessel ashore at Miramar.

The operation had failed on Wednesday as the knot came off while the tug
pulled Andheri Nagri, the official claimed.

"The rough weather made the operation difficult, but we are grateful to
the local people as they were co-operative," he told TOI. The
transhipper's owners had sought the permission of the Momugao Port
Trust, but the board of directors had refused it, citing some reason.

[Goanet] How to Store Your Food So It Lasts Longer

2008-06-14 Thread edwardingoa
How to Store Your Food So It Lasts Longer

You can extend the life of groceries with these easy storage tricks:

   - Organize fruits and veggies: We often toss produce into crispers
together, but apples and some other fruits give off gas called ethylene that
speeds ripening in vegetables. So store them separate, so vegetables don't
   ripen too fast
   - Know which need room temperature: We tend to keep most of our fruits
and vegetables in the refrigerator. But cold temperatures can actually
damage some produce, like squash, tomatoes and oranges
   - Use your own packaging: That flimsy package from the butcher won't
protect your meat from freezer burn. Put it in a vacuum sealed or sip lock
bag with the air squeezed out
   - Protect your dry goods: Dry kitchen products like flour, cornmeal and
other grains can attract bugs that make them unusable. Instead, stash them
in the refrigerator or the freezer where they will be safe from pests
   - Chill your bananas: Most of us keep our bananas on the kitchen counter.
But it seems like they spoil almost as soon as they ripen. Instead, store
them in your refrigerator once they have ripened. The skin will turn brown
but the inside lasts a lot longer
   - Shield leftovers from the air: Many of us end up throwing out leftovers
because they went bad. To prevent it, don't just cover the top of the bowl
with foil or plastic wrap. Instead, transfer your leftovers to an airtight
food storage container to keep them fresh

So keep it fresh longer. Oxygen damages food, so air tight packaging will
help keep things fresh.

[Goanet] Goan identity erodes with onslaught of migrants

2008-06-14 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
Goan identity erodes with onslaught of migrants

One day, Goans will be strangers in their own land. The Goan identity
will fade away and they will be left repenting, for having flirted with
danger and damaged their birthplace. It's time Goans wake up and
initiate saving their identity. .

CJ: Armstrong Vaz ,

GOA IS tiny, with a finite carrying capacity and is already saturated.
The Goan population is extremely small compared to other communities in
India. We (Goans) cannot withstand the current high-inflow of migrants.
It will lead to severe civic, social and economic disturbance, will
obliterate the Goan- identity, turn Goa into an unpleasant hovel like
other urban Indian areas," writes Rajan Parrikar, an America returned
Goan on Goanet, which is a Goan mailing group on why Goa does not need
more migrants.

Yes, Goa and Goans are angry and are facing the ire of the agitating
groups, trying to protect Goa from mega projects and Special economic
zones (SEZ). What is at stake and why are Goans fighting to protect the
land and Goan identity?

Goa has its charm, which has been attracting many to the land over the
last several years. One gets enchanted with the picturesque landscape of
Goa, which possesses rich and varied charms at different altitudes. But
large concrete structures are threatening the beauty and ecology of the
place.

Goa at present is getting a cosmopolitan look. Dangers are expressed
that Goan identity will soon fade away.

"Utt Goenkara! Utt Goenkara! (Goans, awake from your slumber) It is for
long that you have taken things in your stride. Time has come to rise
from your slumber. Time has changed tracks on a fast lane for you for
long. Long for you, to take things around you for granted. The sudden
gush of winds of change will at least make your wiser in thought.

"The issues affecting Goa and Goans are a grim reminder to each one of
us to rise above our narrow mentalities and unite, instead of pulling
each of our fellow Goans down over trivial things. Trivial things, which
can be sorted out and where fences can be mended," a speaker cautions
and exhorts Goans at a mammoth meeting in south Goa called to oppose
mega housing projects, to jell together.

The peace and tranquility of Goa has many a countrymen move to this
land. For years we have played good hosts, had guests from all over the
world. We do not know what our next door neighbour who has taken a
house, flat or a small room for rent would turn out to be.

The next door neighbour may vary from being a pedophile, murderer,
terrorist, rapist, swindler, property grabber, drug peddler, pimp,
prostitute. We do not check the antecedents of the persons. We want to
do business. Business of quick money in giving the premises on rent.
Lest we may lose business to another competitor. The lust to grab a few
crisp notes makes us ignore the face of threat we invite upon ourselves.

The police on their part are happy with their daily routine, collections
of hafta from the various persons in business. The compilation of
strangers' data in every nook and corner of his beat has taken a back
seat.

Utt Goenkara is an non-militant way. Violence does not serve our cause.
So next time around when you sell the land, take a cautious route. Route
of inquiring and prodding a few minutes or for hours to find the
reality. Your conscious will be clear that you had made an effort and
that you were unsuccessful is a different thing.

So do not sell your soul, your land, your pride, your ego and play with
your life and the life of other fellow beings.

The migrants are blamed for the ills but take deep breathe. Where does
the mason, the carpenter, the barber the tile fitter, the labourer in
your market or the beach sports operator come from. The Biharis, the
UPites, have made inroads into the trades.

Gone are mason from Pernem who built outhouses during our childhood
days. Some of them are still living in our villages in Salcete far from
their land in Pernem and greet us, but they had for long forsaken their
professions. The barber who used to cut our hair till last five years
back has changed his shop from a barber's shop to another goods selling
shop. His children like others low menial jobs have changes tracks to
another profession or gone for white collar jobs and even migrated to
America.

In my village Cuncolim, the best of the mechanics and the best
carpenters from Demani Cuncolim are decreasing with every passing year.

So painting all migrants as bad will not serve our cause. The migrants
come for their livelihood and they for one would not like their
livelihood to be destroyed in one stroke.

The drug pushers and the drug lords of the coastal belt are the one who
are more of a threat. A threat, in the long run when they will control
all around and push things for them. Already there is buzz of the
Kashimiris and the Russians combining to control the drug trade in north
Goa beaches.

Record Price For Indian Painting
2008-06-13 02:44pm

A painting by the late Goan painter Francis Newton Souza has broken the
record for an Indian artwork at an auction in London.

Souza's 1955 painting "Birth" was bought by an anonymous bidder at
Christie's auction of modern South Asian art for US$2,519,762.

The purchase set a new "world auction record for the artist and for any
Indian modern art and contemporary work of art," according to
Christie's.

Souza was born in Goa, the former Portuguese colony on the western coast
of India, and lived in London and New York. He died in 2002.

Known for his bold compositions and hailed as one of the most
significant Indian artists, Souza set up a of a group of influential
Indian artists in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1947 called the Progressive
Artists Group, with the aim of encouraging new forms of art.

Christie's said in a statement that Wednesday's auction of the works of
50 of South Asia's leading modern and contemporary art fetched over
US$9.7 million.

Christies says 12 artists' records were set in total at the auction.

[Goanet] Drinking and driving

2008-06-14 Thread Bernice Pereira
Dear friends,

Stringent punishment is meted out in Mumbai to those found drinking and driving
and in case someone is killed, 10 years in jail.  This is very welcome and has
prevented most drivers from taking their cars on the roads after parties.
Breath analyser tests are conducted if drivers refuse to admit that they have
been drinking.

The road accidents in Goa are alarmingly high in proportion to the population
and I feel that legal measures preventing  drinking/drugging and driving are
absolutely mandatory. The speed at which people drive on narrow village roads
is alarming high - everybody thinks they are in Monte Carlo.  Specially for the
"bhaille" drivers, it is a haven..

Please ensure that attention is focussed on this very important matter in Goa
Net.

Mario responds:
Hey, Rui,
Once again, Rui, you and your new friend, Gabe, are missing the
point.  Has either of you grasped yet that there is no such
thing as caste in Christianity?
It is high time we finished what our ancestors started and became like
other mainstream Christians the world over
Reply:
Your argument is for the sake of argument without justification.
In UK, Christianity practise, CLASS system, this was later replaced by Free
Masonry, (ie. giving jobs and contracts to those WHO you know and not WHAT you
know).
These two systems are now going hand in hand, you wouldn't know this because
you are IGNORMUS about it.
WHY? You are not a Lord and secondly, let me quote: a Bangladeshi friend of
mine who had not heard of free masons said, bring me their application form,
I'm a business man too

Mario said:
Of all the Hindu religious practise our ancestors dropped when they
became Christians, the leadership retained this
abomination in order to abuse others who were
considered to be "beneath" them when they were Hindus.
It has gone on long enough.  It is high time we
finished what our ancestors started and became like
other mainstream Christians the world over.
Reply:
Have a good look at your first line (argument for the sake of argument).
Did Christians drop observing the ZORGOT the ECLIPSE, Full Moon etc?
(Christians have dropped the Sun and Moon as gods, but not their effect on
humans).

THERE HAS TO BE the 'Queen Bee' and the workers.
Land owners just because they became Christians, did not mean they had to be
treated equals with labourers. They had to keep their status.

Now with the PhDs.
The PhD people think that they are of the higher class, even above the MB BS
(MBBS, only bachelors in Medicine and Science - what a shame, not a phd.)

RESPONSE: Have heard of this one:-

Excerpt
The Kristang language originated after the conquest of Malacca
(Malaysia) in 1511 by the Portuguese. The community of speakers
descends mainly from marriages between Portuguese settlers and local
Malay women, as well as a certain number of migrants from Goa,
themselves of mixed Indian and Portuguese ancestry.

Kristang had a substantial influence on Macanese, the creole language
spoken in Macau, due to substantial migration from Malacca after its
takeover by the Dutch.

Even after Portugal lost Malacca and almost all contact in 1641, the
Kristang community largely preserved its language. The language is not
taught at school, although there are still some Church services in
Portuguese.

Panaji, June 13:: A lower court in Goa has framed criminal charges against BCCI
Vice President and State's Law Minister Dayanand Narvekar in connection with
the 'fake ticket scam' reported during a 2001 India-Australia One Day
International (ODI) match.

Narvekar, along with eight others, were charged on Thursday under various
sections dealing with cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery, for the purpose
of cheating, and causing disappearance of evidence.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao (south Goa) Pooja Kavlekar
framed the charges in the infamous case which had rocked the state during an
India-Australia ODI played on April 06, 2001 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium,
Fatorda (Panaji).

The match had witnessed chaos outside the stadium when fake tickets were
reported and eligible ticket carriers were not allowed to watch the game.

Following ruckus at the gates, the police had resorted to lathi-charge to
disperse the crowd. Narvekar has been charged in the capacity of Goa Cricket
Association (GCA) President, who was heading the organisation of event.

The case will come up for hearing in the first week of July. Charges are also
framed against GCA's former Secretary Vinod alias Balu Phadke, Treasurer
Ramashankar Das, ticket contractor Chinmay Falari and five others.
