It was also informed that the legislature wing of the BJP will decide its

the state Assembly, if he continues to hold the office.

The onus of sacking the governor is on the President.

Going soft on Narvenkar Even after being framed in a scandal involving
corruption of a high degree...Narvenkar still continues to hold the finance
portfolio in the current ministry. That any of the current 40 legislators from
any of the parties in Goa have any ethics and are purely driven by greed of the
kodel is a well dramatised fact. I feel that in a democracy, it is not only
the party in power, but also the opposition is to be blamed if such corrupt
people are continuing in power. We take great pride in trying to blame the
chief minister and the ruling congress...but open your eyes wide...see if the
leader of opposition is doing his role well... See the logic...the opposition
goes up to the president to seek the removal of a governor...but goes soft on a
framed minister of the ruling party... At the height of the alleged
molestation case that featured the same minister...it was the guts of the then
leader of opposition ramakanth khalap, ably
supported by the students lobby that led a defiant narvenkar to finally budge
in and resign... Today, nobody seems to go for Narvenkar? And all this
assemblies and mobs claiming to save Goa? First step to save Goa is to get rid
of tainted ministers...but then if that happens..there are hardly any among the
current 40 that are not tainted? Cedric D Dubai

Re: [Goanet] June 18 -- Let the Revolution Begin

2008-06-19 Thread Eugene Correia
Well, yes Telo was charged with bigamy. For that he got what 10 to 12 years in
jail? Historical data has shown how the Portuguese worked against the
nationalists.
I am not sure but I think Telo, on his return, was bypassed for the
supervisor's post in All-India Radio, Delhi and the post given it to Laxmanrao
Sardesai, a Saraswat Brahmin, also a freedom fighter. Did not Sardesai later
become editor of Goa Today and then Ambassador to Angola?
We have seen on goanet how the little info on Agente Monteiro brought an
avalanche of information, including personal views from Monteiro's son. I think
Fred wrote a wrote on it for IANS or Goa Today.
Similarly, journalists in Goa could do some more digging into Telo's life and
also verify what I have written. Some Goa-based and some Portugal-based
historians are members of goanet and they could shed more light.
I myself wanted to do my Ph. D in Goa's freedom struggle through long-distance
learning from Goa University but was denied because of residential
qualification as I lived in Canada. I had approached Teotonio de Souza to be my
guide, if I remember correctly. I lost the opportunity to do my doctorate when
the late Dr. George Mark Moraes, the doyen of Goan historians, offered to be my
guide. I foolishly went to join a law college after my post-graduation.
I have gone through tmany books on Goa's freedom struggle and also the Who's
Who (in two volumes) by my friend and ex-college Prakash Shirodkar, the former
director of Goa's archives (forget the name of the institution).
One other historian also offered to be my guide.
I write this because Goa's freedom struggle has been one of my favourite
subjects. I have discussed this subject with many freedom fighters and also
with Prof. Rubinoff, the Toronto academic who wrote India's Use of Force in Goa
for his doctorate.
As I said earlier, I do not have my books with me in Dubai. So it become a big
problem. I just wrote a piece on Bombay Goans and I had to jog my memory. I
could not remember lot of names and incidents and could remember some very
faintly.
Another example is the postings on Goan women hockey internationals. I could
not remember many names and thanks to some goanetters who provided
clarifications and verifications. Just is the nature of goanet and it should
remain that way.
However, I am surprised that JC and PC were ticked off by my writing on June
18. I have spoken from the heart that some those who I mentioned may
have been bit disappointed with the way things turned out after liberation.
That's the price one pays. Freedom has its own price.
Coming to another relevant topice that of freedom fighters being given monthly
pension or monetary rewards or compensation, I do not find anything wrong
with it. Many freedom fighters fell on bad days. They suffered a lot. It is for
the freedom fighters to decline such offers by saying that they did it for the
country and with their hearts.
I don't think any of the freedom fighters took part in the freedom movement
with an eye to getting financial rewards. I doubt the thought ever came to
their minds. Unfortunately, some freedom fighters got big rewards through
government posts, etc, while the majority were found fighting for bread (not
butter) each day.
In my reading and also meeting with freedom fighters, I have known that the
credentials of some of the FF were not wanting. I know that some were just
freedom shouters and some were just arsonists. Maybe the children of the FF
also joined their parents by just shouting slogans against the Portuguese and
now that they have grown up they lay claim to being FF.
JoeGoaUK's mock post makes one take notice that everything is not alright in
the government's approach to granting compensation to those who suddenly claim
to be freedom fighters. I think in the past the FF society or group has
objected to certain persons being called FF.
I just read a bit of Flaviano Dias's (my ex-colleague at Free Press Journal)
piece on June 18 and I agree that Dr. Juliao Menezes was largely forgotten for
his role.
It is the misfortune of history that Ram Monohar Lohia had a larger image and
that Dr. Menezes's own persona and role got overshadowed in the swell of things
of the time. I wish if someone could post me or post it to goanet Flaviano's
piece. In a decade or less, many of the FF would be dead and gone.
Whatever one may say, June 18 will remain symbolic in more sense than one.
It would remain more glorious that the actual Liberation Day. The freedom
struggle had its own share of factional groups and most of its history is now
written. Yet, more needs to be written and I am not sure if any more thesis are
in the works on this subject.

Lionel is doing a fab job on getting the figures of
expenditures of the legislators...

i am sure if you annalyse the bills...it is mostly a
few of the hotels and caterers that are preferred,
definately there is some cut there...

Also, it would be nice to look into the bills of
various NGO's in Goa and check who spends on the
lavish parties thrown at 5 stars in Goa in the name of
catching the RAPIST n all those revolutionary save goa
organisations...

the source of funds of the various save goa
organisations springing overnight at every nook and
corner of Goa would tell an interesting tale...and
bring to light the real motives of these groups...

I feel that in Goa...launching a save goa group is a
big business...its like an extortion racket...

groups claiming to kick off the revolution to save goa
have been operating for several years but i see not an
inch of Goa being saved...in fact large parts of goa
are gettin submerged, and lost...in front of the very
noses of the saviours...

There are some vested interests also trying to
polarise the communities...mob mentality is being
preached...Goans are incited...unnecessarily
provoked...various forms of the media are used to
project an exxagerated version of Goas decline...the
peace of the state is being slowly turned into a state
of hatred and malice and filty words are used by filty
minds to forward the hidden agenda...

Goans be vary...not all have Goa at heart, but hidden
personal agendas...

Time will tell...

[Goanet] Euro 2008 Quarter Finals

2008-06-19 Thread Sandeep Heble
One of the standard charge against Christiano Ronaldo is that he
scores heaps of goals against lower ranked teams but comes a cropper
against the stronger ones. Ronaldo will have the opportunity to prove
himself to his critics once again when Portugal takes on Germany in
the Euro 08 quarter finals. This will be difficult as he is likely to
find himself heavily marked in this game, just as Zidane was by
Materazzi in the FIFA World Cup Finals.

Hopefully, for the sake of Portugal and all its fans, Ronaldo will let
his feet do all the talking, will ignore the Pakle burr remarks and
will use his head only for scoring goals, not for anything else!

My Prediction is 2-1 in favour of Portugal.

Cheers!

The ignorance about natural phenomena that led to the superstitions of

[Goanet] Our legacy for future generations of Goans, courtesy of Goanet.

2008-06-19 Thread Paulo Colaco Dias
I thank Cornel for his courage and honesty.

Cornel's post clearly demonstrates what I always believed:

Posts by a number of authors (me included) are nothing else but a waste of
time, space and bandwidth. Often our written claims lack integrity, factual
credibility and in some cases also lack substantial legal sufficiency,
which, in essence and all put together, leads to most claims, conclusions or
discussions to be unreliable and useless to say the least.

This is what is wrong with Goanet!

We Goans seem to suffer from lack of detail and excellence in whatever we
write. It is easy to write rubbish and because we are not used to quality
reading, we tend to contribute with even more rubbish.

One thing we can be sure: whatever we write today will be available for
eternity through the internet. Isn't this scary enough?

Is this the legacy we want to leave for future generations?

If yes, we are doing an excellent job.

If not, we ought to introduce factual credibility in whatever we write or it
would be better not to write it at all. Especially for those who claim to be
professional researchers or academics that surely could do much better by
not having non-factual claims above their names.

Best regards
Paulo Colaco Dias.

 Hi Eugene
Because of pressures of time, we can only read some
of the posts that appear on Goanet and other sites. I
therefore am forced to use my delete button rather a
lot. However, there are some names that I will always
read but it would be invidious to name them now.
However, I bet most others do so too. Yours is one of
them because I invariably find much good sense in what
you say. Your paragraph below is a good example of
what I also believe. We tend to respond quickly and
invariably without any research that others think,
rather erroneously, is needed on Goanet.

Let them believe what they wish. They seek something
that is simply unavailable for lack of time. It is the
general fund of knowledge and experience that helps
one to respond---and especially when one feels
resonably safe about a given topic. Indeed, JoeGoaUK
could do a good analysis beyond the number of times
people have responded on Goanet per month or whatever.
He could note what topics tend to be addressed by
different respondents. That evidence would confirm
that our range inevitably tends to be small but
reasonably well informed. It is also for this reason
that I absolutely frown on those who suddenly raise
points totally unrelated to issues on the table for
discussion. In this post, you have indeed been
responding to one who does this habitually.

[Goanet] Terror’s new face

2008-06-19 Thread Vidyadhar Gadgil
Herald, 19 June 2008

Editorial

Terror's new face
The arrest of sevaks of the Sanatan Sanstha, a religious group
that is behind the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti for planting bombs in
theatres at Thane and Vashi brings a new dimension to terrorism.
Seven people were injured when one of the bombs the sevaks planted
exploded in the parking lot of Thane's Gadkari Rangayatan theatre
on 4 June.
Ramesh Hanumant Gadkari, Mangesh Nikam, Santosh Angre and Vikram
Bhave, the four bombers, are all full-time activists of the
Sanatan Sanstha, living in ashrams run by the organisation. Their
arrest at the end of a 10-day investigation by the Maharashtra
Anti-terrorism Cell exposes what many have suspected for a few
years now; that not all terrorists are Muslim, and there are Hindu
terrorists too.
Police say that they had planted a bomb outside a mosque or dargah
on the Pen highway last Diwali, to check its intensity, but it did
not explode. Nikam had earlier set off a bomb in the house of a
family in Ratnagiri that had converted to Christianity, and was on
bail awaiting trial.
Ever since there was an accidental bomb blast at a flat in Nanded
rented by Bajrang Dal activists a few years ago, there has been
suspicion that extremist Hindu organisations were also carrying
out terrorist attacks. However, police forces in India never
seriously investigated this phenomenon, blaming the Malegaon
blasts, the Mecca Masjid blast in Hyderabad, the blasts in the
Jaipur dargah, etc, on 'Islamic terrorists'. Now, they need to
have a fresh look, and see who was really responsible.
The Sanstha has said it had no knowledge of these activities and
that the sevaks did it 'on their own'. But the police say it is
very clear that at least one of the bombs was assembled in the
ashram premises, though no bomb-making materials were found in
Gadkari's room.
Protestations of innocence cannot be taken at face value, and the
organisation must be investigated thoroughly. Its literature talks
of 'elimination' of 'evildoers', and though no doubt they will
claim that the words are used in a figurative and not literal
sense, the police need to rigorously look into its voluminous
literature and check out its activities with a fine tooth comb.
This is because the Sanatan Sanstha and the Bajrang Dal, two Hindu
fundamentalist organisations that are both linked to bomb blasts,
are the main constituents of the broad joint front called the
Hindu Janajagriti Samiti, which has been holding public meetings
all over Goa claiming Hinduism is in danger, and making
provocative speeches.
Besides, the leader of the Sanstha, Dr Jayant Athavale, lives
mostly in Goa at Mangueshi, and directs the organisation's
activities from this state.
What is especially troubling is the editorial written by Shiv Sena
chief Bal Thackeray in yesterday's 'Saamna', his party's
newspaper. He has advocated the creation of 'Hindu suicide
squads', saying that the only way to counter the threat of Islamic
terror is by 'Hindu terror'. This threat cannot be taken lightly.
Terrorists typically target innocents, and with two varieties of
terror 'taking on' each other with bombs, it is ordinary people
who will be blown to bits.

Police:

GOA POLICE - PRIDE OF GOA - NOT A SHAME

Police force should be the pride and not the shame to the country or to a
State like GOA. I would desire that more be read into this statement.

STUDY TOURS - SINGAPORE - POLICE UNIFORM - FINE COUNTRY- HUMEROUS NOTE

Our government spends crores of rupees to send our legislators on study tours
across the developed nations of the world. Do they learn anything at all? is a
million dollar question. Once such merry jaunt was to a small country called
Singapore, purportedly to study that country's policing systems. All they came
home with is the color of its police uniform, terming Singapore - 'a police
state'. I have spent the best part of my sailing life in Singapore, it being
called the 'FINE' country. You throw a cigarette butt out of a taxi-cab and the
taxi cab is fined $500/- without mercy. So the cabbies do not allow its
passengers to throw out their cigarette butts. The police is supposed to
implement the laws, rules and regulations that you, sir, the executive,
formulate. On a humorous note I would like to say here that --- if we had
followed the Singapore system of governance, I am sure most of our 40
legislators as well as half of our police force would be behind bars for
breaking and/or failing to enforce the laws of the land.

I would want my following few suggestions recorded and thought over seriously.

1.. NO INTERFERENCE: The Goa police department must be freed from political
executive interference. The police must be allowed to do their job for which
they are trained.

2.. EQUIPPED TO FIGHT CRIME WITH MODERN METHODS. Equipped The Goa police
department must be equipped to fight crime with modern methods.

3.. PROVIDE ADEQUATE TRANSPORT/PATROL VEHICLES: Police stations must be
provided with adequate transport/patrol vehicles fitted with modern
communication/detecting systems such as radar/Doppler systems for police
traffic cells to. Goa government has invested the tax payer's money to purchase
INTERCEPTORS. Sorry to say that these only detect helmet less riders, And the
mode they use to stop the evading riders on Highways is their football playing
skills , resulting in severe accidents which could be translated into deaths.
Ex. The case of Interceptor NO.4 at Porvorim on May 21 2008

4.. CIVILIAN SERVICES BOARD: The police force must be brought under the
'CIVILIAN SERVICES BOARD' where this board shall be responsible for
over-seeing the conduct of the police department including
recruitment/transfers of its personnel.

5.. PUBLIC RELATIONS BUREAU: Police Headquarters must be installed with a
PUBLIC RELATIONS BUREAU handled by a capable police officer who will not only
improvise and/or improve the public relations at the police HQ but will also be
responsible to set up PR- desks at all Police stations. Presently, and as
always, our public relations in general is ZERO. That Goa police must excel
with at least 80% if not a 100% in Public Relations is a foregone conclusion
since Goa is a world acclaimed tourist destination. Therefore, building and
maintaining the police-public confidence is super-most and essential

.

6.. GOOD MANERISM: ASpecial training programmes must be designed to train
police personnel in matters of good mannerism, handling of telephone
instrument and/or the wireless system; public psychology (including mob
psychology) and techniques to handle mobs, demonstrations and morchas that are
likely to become violent, without resorting to unnecessary violence.

7.. IOs Investigating Officers (IOs) in criminal cases must be held
accountable for shoddy/poor or unsatisfactory investigations resulting in cases
being dismissed by Courts. These must be taken into account at the time of
considering promotions.

8.. NIGHT PATROL - DEBRIS : Chronic absence of police on regular beats and
patrolling during the night hours must be addressed on a war footing. Apart
from crimes like robberies etc being committed, lawlessness reigns high with
vehicles such as tempos and trucks dumping debris and garbage on unsuspectingly
clean roadsides by night.

9.. HOAX FINANCIAL OTHER INSTITUTIONS: Police department must start a
vigilance cells to detect hoax financial institutions (NBFCs) advertising and
operating from hotel rooms. Also to control the chronic proliferation of sales
persons doing unchecked door to door rounds.

10.. FOREIGN NATIONALS - EXCLUSIVE CLUBS: No foreign national on tourist visa

opportunity to do my doctorate when the late Dr. George Mark Moraes,
the doyen of Goan historians, offered to be my guide. I foolishly went
to join a law college after my post-graduation.One other historian
also offered to be my guide.

[4] However, I am surprised that JC and PC were ticked off by my
writing on June 18. I have spoken from the heart that some those who I
mentioned may have been bit disappointed with the way things turned
out after liberation.

JC: The only part which JC ticked you off about was where you (Eugene
Correia) manufactured facts.

--

[6] I just read a bit of Flaviano Dias's (my ex-colleague at Free

was largely forgotten for his role.

JC: You mean THE Flaviano Dias of the infamous BOGUS (manufactured
facts) VideoCD fame? Now, that makes some sense.
--

[7] I am not sure if any more thesis are in the works on this subject.

JC: You know ANY thesis on the subject which can stand the test of scrutiny?
--

JC post script and conclusion on the topic: I believe that my
knowledge on this topic has now been exhausted - for the time being,
at least. I believe that concerned Goans like Rajan Parrikar have
taken upon themselves to spend their own time in Goa to photo-document
the mess that has been created. Rajan Parrikar has not just stayed
somewhere in California or Canada and tried to do any PhD on Goa
courtesy some well placed (friendly) guide here or there. Rajan has
done what the alleged Goa Journos should have been doing all these
years - including the ones who were 'a dollar short' and 'an hour
late' on the matter.

To do a PhD, I submit is NO walk in the park. It needs one to get
the feel of the place, people and problems. One can never get that via
remote. I am not sure if Eugene has ever lived in Goa for any
significant length of time.. If so - he may wish to relate his
experiences of living in Goa. If he hasn't really lived in Goa, how
did he expect to do a PhD on a topic related to Goa?

The only reason I intervened this time around is because Eugene
Correia wrote non-facts in his post. Credit is due to him that he
withdrew some of his manufactured facts. (I know at least one 'expert'
who would deny that he ever wrote those manufactured facts).

I reiterate that professionals MUST do due diligence before making
negligent mis-representations - instead of hiding under the excuse
that there are no books in the sand OR that the mis-representations of
journalists do not harm anybody.

If one cannot write accurately as a professional, let us know that in
preface i.e. 'hey guys, I am just writing this from my heart ...I
cannot vouch for the stuff which I am writing as there are no books
here only Sand..

Someone like me would know then NOT to read that post. Please do not
represent yourself as being either knowledgeable or professional, and
then proceed to manufacture facts.

Just understand this: it is all about the poixe. The pallava about
glory et al having been noted. Lionel Messias' post provides
physical proof.

I have said my piece on this matter. Eugene may wish to have the last
word on this matteror just

[Goanet] professional colleges instead of football academy

2008-06-19 Thread peu De

Football Academy now on slippery turf

HERALD REPORTERVillagers want professional colleges insteadMARGAO, JUNE 18 —
Comparing the football Academy to Special Economic Zones, the Rs 100 crore AIFF
Academy proposed in Cuncolim came in for strong opposition from villagers, who
have demanded utilization of the prime 1.26 lakh sq mts land for educational
institutions and professional colleges.Former Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson,
Ramesh Dessai even threatened to go on a hunger strike at the miraculous
Taddeancho Khuris at Panzorconne if local MLA and Urban Development Minister,
Joaquim Alemao goes ahead with the project. The press conference was addressed
by citizens from Cuncolim, including three prominent members of the screening
committee constituted to decide on the Academy.Dr Jorson Fernandes said the
proposed Academy at Cuncolim is a “fraud” played on a political turf rather
than a natural turf, while objecting to the football Academy in the present
form.He said the screening committee had raised the demand to se
t up colleges for various technical courses such as catering college,
physiotherapy college, rubber technology etc to help the students of football
Academy to have the necessary qualifications to grow in an event they do not
make to the mark of excellence, adding “unfortunately for reasons best known
this point was totally excluded by the drafting committee”.Moreover, he said no
cognizance was taken of the Cuncolim Municipal Council resolution dated
September 18, 2007 favouring educational institutions on the acquired land.He
demanded to know what has happened to the children of land losers vis-à-vis
fellowship or the five seats for students of Cuncolim in the Academy.Dr Jorson
demanded to know why AIFF Secretary Alberto Colaco and Joaquim Alemao are
bending towards Bharti Foundation, adding “I fail to understand why Bharti is
shying away from the people of Cuncolim or why Albert Colaco is taking so much
interest in doing presentations on behalf of Bharti”.In his address, De
rick Dias representing Save Cuncolim demanded to know why the Goa government
is not building an academy rather than selling the land to outside private
companies like Bharti Telecom. “Joaquim had promised in his election campaign
to set up institutions and colleges. Why is he going back on his promise? Why
didn’t he take public opinion before taking decision on this major project”, he
said, adding that Alemao invited only his select people, who would submit to
his terms. “The academy is a combination of SEZ and Housing Board. It is a wolf
in sheep’s clothing”, he added, and demanded that the land be returned back to
the owners.Former CMC Chairperson Ramesh Dessai warned that the people of
Cuncolim would go to any extent against the Academy. A member of the screening
committee, Dessai said neither the views of the members nor the resolution of
the Cuncolim Municipal Council were taken into account before approving the
Academy.Another J J Mascarenhas strongly favoured setting
up of professional colleges on the land in question instead of the Academy.
“The academy is nothing but backdoor SEZ. We are opposed to it”, he said, while
disclosing plans to knock the doors of the Judiciary.Civic and Consumer rights
activist, Roney Dias said the CMC resolution was very clear that the people of
Cuncolim want educational institutions on the acquired land and urged the local
MLA to go by the resolution.

Less-than-Ph.D or we Ph.D's. What is IT

Now you either have one or NOT? Was this so hard to grasp? That was the
precise reason i told you not to reply...cause you have a very tough time
understanding plain english, and most of the netters are reluctant to engage
in a conversation with you. You are like the DOLE(I wonder if you know, what

[Goanet] An allergy to freedom fighters and any anti-Portuguese colonialism position? Was: Re: June 18 -- Kagaz ke Phool

2008-06-19 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या
Apart from answering questions with counter-questions, the
doctor-cum-now-qualified-lawer that is JC is also known for raising
irrelevant and diversionary issues, taking on his favourite targets
(Goa journos including those who reported on or were anyway involved
with the Siddi and Daman bridge stories, politicians, anyone even
remotely critical of Portuguese colonialism and a few other
'favourites').

Just two comments on the following:

(i) In what way are the comments made below any different from the
bad-mouthing of people that we run into so often these days? Goa has
now made a fine art of bad-mouthing people we do not like. We're now
seeing Wendell being targetted by an anonymous mail, selectively
copied to a few, on the grounds of his (hardly any secret) sexual
preferences, just at a time when he speaks out on the problems Goa is
facing and threatening to turn into an oppositional figure of sorts.
Likewise, Dr Oscar was recently targeted at around the same time some
voiced fears of him being built up into a politician to contest the
Panjim seat. Is this just a coincidence? Is Telo de Mascarenhas'
bigamy also targeted selectedly, or are we uniform about what issues
we take up?

(ii) Telo de Mascarenhas' biography by Shashikar Kelekar (June 1984,
Builders of Modern India series, sorry JC, I know this would cause
an allergy, but that's what it's called) notes that Telo fell in love
with a Portuguese girl with it eventually maturing into marriage and
had two daughters, named Padmini and Lakshmi (p. 24). It mentions that
their firstborn died of penumonia and soon, Telo's marriage itself
went on the rocks. Husband and wife found it difficult to stay
together and they were divorced.

On page 50, we're told that married again in New Delhi in February
1957, his wife being Elsa do Nascimento Mendonca, the daughter of
Nascimento Mendonca (1884-1926), the Goan poet. Now, we all know that
divorce wasn't permitted in Salazar-ruledl Portugal, in a country
where Church and State ruled in close alliance, where Concordats gave
priviledges to religion, and a nation which wasn't a modern secular
European state but an unabashed theocracy.

So is this a case of bring up issues just when we need to build some
controversy about someone? Yeah, tax-raids have been conducted against
critics of the government, and the Tehelka was found to be operating
in a very questionable manner after its expose of the earlier
government. Dr J F Martins was imprisoned by a post-Liberation
government in Goa, and JC has been consistently opposed to anyone who
questioned Portuguese colonialism in this part of the globe (though in
a couched manner).

So much for taking up issues! We're very selective about them... in
whom we hero-worship and whom we won't forgive for the positions
they've taken. FN

2008/6/19 J. Colaco jc [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 JC's comments interspersed,

 Eugene Correia wrote:

[1] Well, yes Telo was charged with bigamy. For that he got what 10 to
12 years in jail? Historical data has shown how the Portuguese worked
 against the nationalists.

JC: So, Eugene, was the charge of bigamy trumped up - as you had
 previously asserted?

JC: You mean THE Flaviano Dias of the infamous BOGUS (manufactured
facts) VideoCD fame? Now, that makes some sense.

In logic, the above would be called:
Ad Hominem (Argument To The Man):
attacking the person instead of attacking his argument.

[Goanet] Why is English so difficult

2008-06-19 Thread edwardingoa
Why is English so difficult

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes;

but the plural of ox became oxen not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,

yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice;

yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,

why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet,

and I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,

why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,

yet hat in the plural would never be hose,

and the plural of cat is cats, not cose.

We speak of a brother and also of brethren,

but though we say mother we never say methren.

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,

but imagine the feminine, she, shis and shim.

Portuguese colonialism in this part of the globe (though in a couched

jc's response:

Dear Frederick, I personally found your response particularly peculiar
as well as predictable and prejudicial.

But ...you are a journalist - not one of the alleged Goa journos I
referred to nor the negligent ones (I paraphrase) that Rajan Parrikar
referred to in an earlier posting. Accordingly, when Frederick writes,
JC readsand when Frederick does a little samba/tango with his
words, JC believes he deserves a response.

Let's briefly examine the issues you have raised - and which I have
excerpted above. Take your time and answer the questions I place
before you (only for clarification ...err reclarification). I place
them here because of your clever use of words - your prerogative
since you are after all a professional journalist. You research much
before you write. Do you not?

Well here goes:

re # 1:

a: Was the story by (the now late) Mhambre wrt the Sidis of Goa - accurate?
b: Did you believe it to be accurate?
c: Were the errors pointed out on GoaNet? (I actually copied my letter to NT)
d: Did Mr. Mhambre (to the best of your knowledge) ever correct his error?
e: Did you ever advise him to correct the errors? (You have already
confirmed your own 'part' in that story)
f: Did you ever attempt (on GoaNet) to justify the non-correction of the errors?
g: Same questions (minus the reference to Mr. Mhambre) wrt the Daman
bridge story which hit the wires.

Now ...

h: Is it important that we correct our negligent errors of statement?
i: What purpose do blatant Bondollam serve - when one is dealing with
a set of educated people?
j: Is there not enough documented material with which the Portuguese
can be beaten up with?
k: If so, why is nuevo and bogus material being manufactured?

for the Sidi story: please vide : http://www.colaco.net/1/siddhi0.htm

re #2: You may be partially right - especially with the way you have
(cleverly) constructed the sentence. However, the relevant questions,
I submit, are the following:

l: Has JC merely opposed anyone who questioned Portuguese
colonialism or only the Bondollam the opposers have manufactured?
m: Are you saying that FN supports the publication and non-correction
of Bondollam?

re #3:

n: Did you read Eugene's assertion of 'trumped up charges?
o: Were the charges trumped up or based on the then-currently operating law?
p: Are you saying that IF you (FN) are arrested for taking photographs
at Dabolim airport, the charges would be trumped up because in 'a
modern European state', photography is allowed at airports?
q: Would you please advise us of the Nationalistic Activity Telo was
confirmed to have been involved in?

Conclusion: I will not ask you (FN) to read carefully before you give
script to your pet prejudices. I suggest however that you advise us
clearly and once and for all .. your position on the following
(please do not do the samba or waltz on this one):

QUESTION: Do you support the journalistic use of manufactured facts
aka Bondollam and semi-facts on any issue?

You are right: I am allergic to Bondollam.

Sincerely

jc
PN: remember now ...straight talk - No dancing around the Kokum tree.

PS: This is not the first time that Frederick Noronha and I have
discussed this topic. This is my first and final response to FN's post
on this matter (at this time). Frederick's responses to the queries
posted above - IF he chooses to respond - will remain as the final
words.

They will also determine - whether he is a non-Bondollista journalist
or just the 'convenient one'.

[Goanet] In No mood for Heros

2008-06-19 Thread Carvalho
I was watching a BBC documentary on Charles Dickens the other evening and was
quite disconcerted to find out things about the man I had once devotedly read
in school. It turns out that Charles Dickens was a very secretive man, who in
the latter half of his life had a mistress, the little known actress Ellen
Ternan. What was disconcerting about Dickens was the almost savage severing of
ties from his wife, who bore his 9 children, that followed once the illicit
affair began.

Dickens however, is revered by the British. It is said his popularity and,
political and social clout at the time was unparalleled. His peccadilloes have
neither marred his image nor toppled him off the pedestal to which a literary
giant like him rightfully belongs. The British are forgiving of their own that
way.

The American media likewise is very adept at creating heros. Just recently,
they've chiseled-out a hero from a relatively unknown man called Barack Obama.
Their heros are not limited to politicians alone. They are routinely in the
business of creating heros chosen from Nascar racing-drivers to basketball
players to movie-stars. There is something in the American psyche that years
and thrives on hero-hood.

Which set me thinking as to why the Indian public seems reluctant to embrace
heroes, post independence. Even our national icons such as Gandhi and Nehru are
now being painstakingly reinvented and cast in a poor light. Other regional
potentials like Dr Oscar Rebello soon find themselves mired in controversy,
either of their own making or foisted onto them. Yesteryear's heros and today's
lemmings. A public's embrace in the soft-glow of luminary light is fleeting and
often ripped asunder even before the sun rises on their short-comings. The
India media rarely plays the role of matchmaker between the public and
hero-worship.

Is it that we are more cynical as a country, perhaps incapable of sustaining
the hero myth given the plurality of our political and cultural ideologies and
regional loyalties? Or are we just bereft of any real heroes in our society
forsaken as we are by our polity and the commercialisation of our artistic
integrity? Perhaps we are just a nation in no mood for heroes. Somehow I think
that leaves us a little impoverished.

It is dismal to hear how such meetings are conducted. Was Mr. Damu Naik of
Fatorda, asking Floriano Lobo for a solution a genuine query or tantamount
to an aggressive posture? In such a situation it up to the aggrieved to
offer solutions, or does it merely amount to tum kitem kortollo tem pouya
or sang baba amkam, ami tujem aikonc toyar assat.

I find it a bit Kafkaesque but could be misreading Florionos's comments. But
to further follow it up with a circular stating that no MLA or ministers may
be defamed is soft thuggery. First of all, this circular cannot be binding,
but sadly many will simple assume that it is. Goans in Goa do not need me to
say my bit, but it is really galling to hear the Chairman's bhasa and the Ad
Hoc Committee's kornneo — a la circular. I would rather a tormentor have
marbles of steel, but these are sad caricatures that pass off as men,
particularly Narvenkar. I often wonder how their children, particularly the
women perceive their patriarchs — those in the Goan politics. And what is
even worse is that they have high-level security. So essentially
State-sponsored thugs or state-protected thugs. Its as if the Center and the
State says, chaddo un becharon par, par paise humare kabz mein dena, aur
aap bhi raklo.

Cartoonists lampoon these emasculates. I know it is hard, but try. It has
been done before in the Eastern-bloc countries.

I have so far attended the second round of the Ad Hoc Committees meeting
at the Goa Legislative Assembly chaired by MLAs. This has given the
opportunity to place before the committees various suggestions to the
prevailing wrongs and even if nothing happens after the exercise has ended,
one thing will remain, that the Officials of the respective departments
 have
been forced to hear the comments of the lay people and be censured or
praised as the case may be.

When at the Law meeting, Chairman being Mr. Damu Naik of Fatorda, the first
issue that I raised was about the Law makers not only becoming the Law
breakers but also are gifted with the portfolio dealing with the Law
 itself.
I named Dayanand Narvekar by name as the blatant example and asked the
chairman if any confidence can be retained by me as a citizen in this
situation. He asked me if I had any solution. To that I told him that the
normal norm that one is innocent until proven guilty' must be reversed in
the case of elected representatives to read one is guilty until proven
innocent and should not be given any portfolio least the Law and Finance,
the departments for which Dayanand Narvekar has had contempt during his
 entire political career.

You will be pleased to note that for the next day, there was a circular
handed over to every participant that ministers and MLAs should not be
 named
 or defamed.

Dear Eugene,

What exactly is the point that you want to make in your long, rambling
post on 18 June?

Telo Mascarenhas lived at the house of Elsa Mendonca in Camurlim for
some time. so what does that have to do with the freedom struggle?
Personal issues do not concern freedom. Some arsonists and children
who Shouted slogans are Pensioned Freedom Fighters asking for more
reservations ... 46 years after liberation when the maximum age
for employment is 35 years. why should someone BORN 11 years AFTER
liberation ever deserve reservation for education AND service? These
are beggars, not fighters!

Flaviano Dias has already lorded over the Scrutinising Committee set
up by Manohar Parrikar for the infamous VCD. Just see how he has
depicted Cuncolim in that. Why suddenly remember Dr. Menezes now? Why
not in time to add him in the VCD??

Let me quote Dr. Manohar Rai SarDessai's poem Otthra Jun for you:

Kitle oxe aile gele
Otthra Jun!.
Ambea-mullant kuddkuddtta
Gavdeacho por ozun!
Bhangarachem Goy amchem
Kitlem asa pois ozun!

Fr. Vasco do Rego sj has rendered it in English [for the book My
Song. Ma Chanson. O Meu Canto. Edited by Jorge de Abreu Noronha. New
Age Printers. Rs.250/-] thus:

So many times it has come and gone:
The 18th of June!..
The poor Gavddi-boy
Shivers still beneath the mango tree.
How far from us, oh how far still
That Golden Goa of our dreams

On 22 June, 2008, it will be three years since this linguist-poet
with a Ph.D in French from Sorbonne University, Paris, to boot .
last walked through the streets of St. Inez , Panaji-Goa. Till the end
he earned his living, unlike the bootlickers who masquerade as Freedom
Fighters and bring the true Freedom Fighters [pensioned or not] to
disrepute!

The consolidated pension for a FF in Goa is Rs.14,600/- per month [as
stated in a recent case against the wife of a FF taking DSSS pension
that was exposed by my friend, neighbour and former colleague, Subodh
Shetye.]. Imagine petty crooks of yore getting FIVE TIMES or 500% of
the salary of a full time contract labour in the Industrial Estates of
Goa, toiling for 8 hours a day. I am not talking of just the
Gavddi-Kunbi-Velip boys and girls. I have seen graduate degree holders
from across the caste spectrum in Goa who earn less than the FF
pension of the day ...and their wages are deducted for non-working
days!

Oh! Brother, do you remember: 18th June?

Subject: Re: [Goanet] June 18 -- Let the Revolution Begin

Historical data has shown how the Portuguese worked against the nationalists.
I am not sure but I think Telo, on his return, was bypassed for the
supervisor's post in All-India Radio, Delhi and the post given it to
Laxmanrao Sardesai, a Saraswat Brahmin, also a freedom fighter. Did
not Sardesai later become editor of Goa Today and then Ambassador to
Angola?
We have seen on goanet how the little info on Agente Monteiro brought
an avalanche of information, including personal views from Monteiro's
son. I think Fred wrote a wrote on it for IANS or Goa Today.
Similarly, journalists in Goa could do some more digging into Telo's
life and also verify what I have written.

I had approached Teotonio de Souza to be my guide, if I remember
correctly. I lost the opportunity to do my doctorate when the late Dr.
George Mark Moraes, the doyen of Goan historians, offered to be my
guide. I foolishly went to join a law college after my
post-graduation.
I have gone through tmany books on Goa's freedom struggle and also the
Who's Who (in two volumes) by my friend and ex-college Prakash
Shirodkar, the former director of Goa's archives (forget the name of
the institution).
Another example is the postings on Goan women hockey internationals. I
could not remember many names and thanks to some goanetters who
provided clarifications and verifications.

I have spoken from the heart that some those who I mentioned may
have been bit disappointed with the way things turned out after liberation.
That's the price one pays. Freedom has its own price.
Coming to another relevant topice that of freedom fighters being given
monthly pension or monetary rewards or compensation, I do not find
anything wrong with it. Many freedom fighters fell on bad days. They
suffered a lot. It is for the freedom fighters to decline such offers
by saying that they did it for the country and with their hearts.
Whatever one may say, June 18 will remain symbolic in more sense than one.
It would remain more glorious that the actual Liberation Day. The
freedom struggle had its own share of factional groups and most of its
history is now written. Yet, more needs to be written and I am not
sure if any more thesis are in the works on this subject.

[Goanet] MUMBAI-SEVA DHAN: Patients Evicted From De-Addiction Centre, NGOs Appeal Chief Minster

2008-06-19 Thread Goanet News
Patients Evicted From De-Addiction Centre, NGOs Appeal Chief Minster

By SAR NEWS

MUMBAI, Maharashtra (SAR News) -- Several Non-Governmental
Organisations (NGO) together with the Mumbai-based Catholic Secular
Forum (CSF) made a representation to Maharashtra Chief Minister
Vilasarao Deshmukh questioning the eviction of Kripa Foundation's drug
de- addiction centre from the municipality premises. It may be
recalled that the Municipal authorities on May 8th, evicted patients
and substance addicts from the Seva Dhan centre run by the Kripa
Foundation alleging non-payment of long-pending municipal corporation
dues.

While the State Minorities Commission too has taken up the appeal of
the CSF, representatives of the CSF and the NGOs working towards drug
rehabilitation – Seva Dhan, Kripa Foundation and National Addiction
Research Centre (NARC) also met several key officers including the
Chief Secretary and the Mayor of the city.

Dr A J Tavares, with this NGO group said, The crux of the matter is
that we will not be awarded funds from the Centre (Ministry of Social
Justice and Empowerment) unless the BMC enters into an agreement with
us. The BMC though is refusing to get into an agreement, without us
paying rupees 1.20 crore as rental arrears.

Clema Pinto, cofounder, Seva Dhan says, We first received the
eviction order in October 2007, and were given fifteen days to vacate
the premises. We approached Kishore Gajbhiye, Additional Municipal
Commissioner, Health, Western Suburbs, who refused to hear about an
agreement before we paid up the amount . The Central Government can
grant us this amount only if we have an agreement with the civic body,
so the NGOs requested the municipal corporation for some time, which
was flatly denied to them. The NGOs are now awaiting action, expected
within a couple of weeks.

Ironically, the Chief Minister had recently conferred an award of Rs
25, 000 on Seva Dhan for pioneering drug de-addiction in the city.

[Goanet] STT: Bombay Culling?

STT: Bombay Culling?

Something to think (STT).

O God, how can you watch from heaven your own children getting killed by Bombay
suburban trains?

What about the so called religious leaders, can’t they do something at least in
the name of their Gods?

Is India really shining?

Is India a developing country, if so how? By culling its own people to curb
population?

12 reported deaths per day on Bombay tracks (there could be equal number of
deaths which go unreported).

Today 12, tomorrow 25 then what 100 per day? And then we continue saying ‘ye
hai Bombay, yaham aisa hota hai’?

Is Bombay using the same old brains which was left to them by the Britishers?

Bombay or India has got no brain of its own yet?

What about the Metro?

What about the Skybus?

Is it ever going to happen? When? Or what took them so long?

Just 2 days ago, a 27 years old Kingfisher Executive was traveling by a train
on a footboard (like many others in crowded trains). She lost her balance and
falls to death.

The other ladies saw her falling but none bother to pull the chain. Her other
friend and room mate who was inside the same compartment got down at the next
station and reported the incidence to the Rly police and rushed her to Bhagwati
hospital where she declared dead. The incidence took place between Malad and
Goregao Stations.

Police says ‘wearing high hills and a clutching a heavy laptop have cost her
life’
  (News report TOIgoa June 18)

No doubts, most deaths are due to victim’s negligence but there must be some
health safety measures in place to prevent such deaths. One cannot simply
ignore such things saying ‘This is Bombay’.

We are talking about human beings here not something like damage to public
property etc.

[Goanet] Buying books direct from Goa

2008-06-19 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या
Thanks to Cecil Pinto, I learnt of an easier and cost-effective way of
sending books across from Goa. If you want to buy any books from here,
try this out:

Go to any website that stocks books on Goa. Incomplete list below.
Check out which are the ones in print. Ask a relative or friend to
pick them up (you should get some discount, depending on the place
you're buying them from). Then, get the books packed at one of the
shops alongside the General Post Office Panjim -- called Deepak
Enterprises, the proprietor is friendly and knows his work, a Mr Chari
-- or the Mapusa post office (I've not been there).

They will pack it for you, in plastic wrapping, with a cloth covering
that's open on one side. Postal regulations require this.

You can walk over to the post office (before 4 pm, in Panjim's case)
and send the books across as a air packet, printed matter only. Make
sure you don't include any handwritten text, note or letter in the
packet. This is not allowed under the postal rules.

I sent five 200-page books across to Canada and it cost me Rs 360 for
postage and another Rs 40 for packaging. It reached in under two
weeks. Another five larger books sent to the UK cost me Rs 445.

Goanetters interested in knowing more about Goa can use this route to
pick up relevant books on the topics. This would also give a fillip to
writers working on Goa, help widen understanding on different
perspectives related to Goa, and also offer new windows to
understanding Goa. Every book on Goa out there can be a promotion for
Goa, and can also help to keep touch with understanding the region.

You can check out which books are in print by visiting
http://www.goabooks.com, http://otherindiabookstore.com/search.jsp
(search for GOA),
http://shop.rediff.com/bookshop/buyersearch.jsp?crifield=blanksearch=1lookfor=Goasearch.x=0search.y=0
or http://firstandsecond.com/ (the last two are out-of-Goa, but you
might get free postage on books sent within India).

Searching for out-of-print jobs can be a tough task. Maybe it's time
for someone to set up an antiquarian bookshop in Goa! FN

Re: [Goanet] The International Goan Convention July 2008 - Brahmin Issues: Vol 3, Issue 735

2008-06-19 Thread Mario Goveia
This post contains my responses to first Seb and then
Edward who both misunderstood what I had written
previously.

Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2008 13:43:38 +0400
From: Seb dc [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In plain simple language, i had asked; Do you have a
Ph.D or Not? Cause if you read your mail properly in
your first Para you below you say Even with
my less-than-Ph.D. education...

Mario responds:

Seb,

I'm sorry to be the one to inform you that it was YOU
who did not READ or WRITE your mail properly.

To begin with, isn't it obvious that less-than-Ph.D.
means that I don't have a Ph.D.?

Seb wrote:

Then in the next you say: ...the wisdom of Solomon
and Bill Gates combined, and we Ph.D.'s are just a
bunch of Einstein wannabes. Do you have a job for
us where we can dirty our hands?:-)) - your words
not mine!!

Mario responds:

Seb, I know I was born at night, but it was definitely
not last night!:-))

Don't you know that when you truncate a sentence, it
can change the meaning of the sentence completely?

Now, let me show you the difference when one reads my
full sentence, in proper context:

I had written:

I think Edward is just having some fun with the Ph.D.s
on Goanet, some of whom - not most - certainly have
delusions of superiority, but who should respond
accordingly, something like, Edward, you are
absolutely correct. You have the wisdom of Solomon
and Bill Gates combined, and we Ph.D.'s are just a
bunch of Einstein wannabes. Do you have a job for us
where we can dirty our hands?:-)) [end of quote]

See what I mean, Seb? If you don't, let me give you a
clue. The clue is that I was clearly talking about
the Ph.D.s on Goanet, and then I said, who should
respond and then I wrote what THEY should say.

I was not talking about myself, Seb, which is the part
you missed. I had already made clear earlier that I
was not a Ph.D. when I said, less-than-Ph.D. Are
you getting the picture?

Seb wrote:

Was this so hard to grasp? That was the precise reason
i told you not to reply...cause you have a very tough
time understanding plain english,

Mario responds:

Seb, do you see now that it is YOU who has a hard time
grasping plain English on Goanet?

Seb writes:

and most of the netters are reluctant to engage
in a conversation with you.

Mario responds:

Oh, I don't know. The archives are filled with
Goanetters engaging in conversations with me.

Seb wrote:

You are like the DOLE(I wonder if you know, what
that is)

Mario responds:

Seb, I live in the US. The only Dole I know is Bob
Dole who was a US Senator some years ago and his wife,
Elizabeth Dole, is currently a US Senator.

I don't think I am anything like either Bob or
Elizabeth Dole:-)).

From: edward desilva [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Do you have any idea what you are saying on Goanet?

Mario responds:

Yes. Absolutely. You can see that in my response to
Seb above, and my comments below.

Edward wrote:

Are you always drunk? if not, What is all this?

Mario responds:

I have been known to occasionally have drunk well and
not too wisely, but that was when I was young and
irresponsible:-)) It has been quite awhile since I
was young:-))

Edward wrote:

As Seb said most of us try to avoid replying to your
mail.

Mario responds:

As I explained to Seb, this is not quite true. The
archives will prove that there are several Goanetters
who respond to what I write. However, there are some
who are unable to respond because my logic has been so
devastating and conclusive:-))

Edward wrote:

This is ridiculous.
Seb has lost his train - has he?

Mario responds:

No, Seb hasn't lost his train! Seb never had a train!

What Seb had lost was his train of thought and his
ability to spell. Here is what I was referring to.

Seb wrote, Appologies for burting in...but MG dear,
do you have or do you not?

See what I mean?

Do you have or do you not have WHAT? He forgot
to say.

Now he's trying to explain himself and making a bigger
mess than before as you can see above.

We have a saying here in America, If you find
yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is STOP
DIGGING!

[Goanet] The Caste blah blah blah ...not at The International Goan Convention please

2008-06-19 Thread J. Colaco jc
rui nuvo responding to Cornel da Costa (inter alia) wrote:

1: Yes, I do belong to the social caste system in which I happen to be
a Brahmin.
2: My culture is Hindu. And I am a Christian.
3: Much of what you say I have heard on Goanent ad nauseam eg Brahmins
killing Dalits and raping their women

Dears,

May I suggest to all you good people that you keep this caste
nonsense out of the 2008 Convention in Toronto?

From what I understand of Goa and our culture, these international
conventions are the last vestiges of Goemkarponn left. The rest of Goa
and Goan culture is being wiped out. Please, let us do everything to
preserve our Goan culture - and not waste time on useless and divisive
issues. For one, Caste plays NO major role in Goa today. Leave the
Convention in peace, please.

My only other comments re the above points - are as follows:

1: Never mind the spin, the caste system was/is a method of
discrimination which took control of Hinduism. The clerics took over
control of the territory.and made the rules. In a way, the Laws of
Manu were a 'fatwa' of their time.

Clerics be on top when there are Warriors and Chieftans?
Hence.. religion, God et al . These days, some
churches/temples/cults are finding novel methods of relieving the
naive of money.

2: I submit that the practise of the Caste System makes one a Hindu -
It is definitely unChrisitian. ...as the type of discrimination is
contrary to the life and teachings of Christ.

3: The Dalit controversy is thicker than one can imagine. It is true
that there are atrocities against the Dalits but there are many
occasions when the Dalits are used as pawns.

I must say that I believe that enough 'leveling' of the playing field
has taken place since 1947/1950. I am opposed to any further
reservations on the basis of Caste / Tribe etc especially in the
high tech and highly specialised fields. walk in the park fields Ok
...but no further. From now only Merit please.

just my view

[Goanet] IN THE NEWS: Alfredo de Melo, a WWII veteran from Goa now resident of Montevideo, Uruguay

2008-06-19 Thread Goanet News
http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=ArchiveSource=PageSkin=TOIBaseHref=TOIGO/2008/06/18PageLabel=4EntityId=Ar00401ViewMode=HTMLGZ=T

Fighting Nazis and industry leadership
Alexandre Moniz Barbosa establishes contact with Alfredo de Melo, a
WWII veteran from Goa now resident of Montevideo, Uruguay

As a kid he teamed up with siblings and friends to play war games,
fighting a 'friendly' war that ended up in bruises on the slopes of
Altinho, Panaji in the 1930s.
Just a few years later he was parachuting on to the battle fields
of Europe to fight the Nazis in World War II. The war over he set off
for Uruguay, to establish a business in the South American country and
even serve as vice president of the Uruguayan Chamber of Industries.
Life has not only taken Alfredo Froilano de Melo half way across the
globe but wound him up to.
Now 84 and despite having left Goan shores in his early teens,
Alfredo hasn't forget the Goa of his childhood.
His book, 'From Goa to Patagonia' released last year, recounts in
fond detail the years he spent in Portuguese Goa. But travelling to
Goa is no longer a possibility.
I am afraid it is highly unlikely that I shall travel to India
again. My cardiologist does not allow me to travel on economy class
and only two weeks ago, I could walk just two blocks without being out
of breath, says Alfredo.
But he remembers Goa a lot, keeping in touch with his birth place
through email, exchanging messages with friends made in cyber space.
I only keep in touch with Fernando do Rego, as I don't know
anybody else. I don't even know Fernando personally, says Alfredo.
His love for Goa tugs at his heart and he laments, I have not
done anything for Goa, except offering to give half my royalties to an
orphanage, recommended by Fernando's brother Fr Vasco do Rego.
Alfredo has two books to his name, 'Columbus' and 'From Goa to
Patagonia' one on Christopher Columbus, the other his memoirs.
For young Alfredo who spent his early years in a sprawling mansion
at Altinho, life was easy. His was a privileged lifestyle, with tutors
coming to the house, his father being the reputed doctor Froilano de
Melo who went on to represent Goa in the Portuguese parliament. Early
home schooling took Alfredo to Bishop Cotton Boys School, Bangalore
and then to Madras Christian College, attempting to study medicine at
the Madras Medical College.
But he was soon off to Portugal seeking a degree at the Oporto
Medical College, where his father was a visiting professor.
But Lisbon had other distractions to offer. Outings to the theater
and socializing abundantly brought Alfredo in contact with various
people, including one Phillip Newman, who turned out to be the Chief
of British counter espionage in Portugal. Still a teenager, Alfredo
found himself involved in counter espionage activities and halfway
through med school found that there was a serious threat to his life.
Hoping to find safety elsewhere, he opted for the battle fields of
Europe volunteering to fight in the ongoing war for Britain and
following a quick preparatory course, Alfredo teamed up with a
commando unit which dropped by parachute into occupied Holland.
Caught in the battle of the Bulge, Alfredo and his colleagues were
captured by the Nazis and taken prisoner-of-war by the Nazis on
December 17th, 1944. It was four month's before the American forces
led by General Patton would liberate Alfredo and his fellow soldiers.
Having had enough of Europe it was to Argentina that Alfredo went,
before making Uruguay his home, where he established his own plastic
industry and served as vice-president of the Uruguayan Chamber of
Industries.
A socialist, Alfredo could, but stayed away from politics.
Although by conviction, I am a socialist, and have voted for the
socialist party here, I have never sought public office nor got
involved in politics.
Now living a life of retirement Alfredo has turned to writing and
travelling, the latter bringing him to an excursion of India too. That
was enough to make him savour the flavour of the dishes that are
rustled up in the Goan kitchens. The one thing that I would do if I
go to Goa, would be to taste the spicy food, which I don't get here.
His little contact with Goa has been enough for him to gauge the
way the State is progressing.
Says he, The politics of Goa seem outrageous. There is too much
corruption. In fact I only glean these from the mails that Fernando
sends around the world. Anyhow, each country has the government it
deserves.

Re: [Goanet] The Rape of Goa...as a tool to Save Goa?

2008-06-19 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Folks,
Goanet started out as an un-moderated forum.

All topics that were interesting to members were discussed, without any
restrictions. When a member got out of hand, other members would write to the
offending party informing him so.

About ten years ago, someone made a post exactly the same as Rajans post of
yesterday. People complained that their children were reading Goanet and they
did not want their kids to be exposed to senseless and disgusting posts. At the
time, a member wrote to us saying that the person who sent in the offending
post had previously suffered a nervous break down and was known to have stress
problems. Because of this, moderators were introduced to Goanet.

It seems that the 'moderation' has come a full circle.

Yesterday we read the exact same post that made Goanet a moderated' forum.
The 'moderators' deemed the disgusting post as being worthy of Goanet. Rajan
Parrikar's replied to an excellent post using the most coarse of thoughts. Is
this the type of behaviour we want to cultivate on Goanet? Is this the type
of forum we want to build?

Lets take this one step further.
After I protested to Rajan, I got a reply that cannot be reproduced here.
Someone else also sent us a private email saying that he too got an email from
Rjan with the same language. Miguel Braganza reports that he was verbally
abused by Rajan in Panaji because of Miguel's protest on the same vulguar post.

Look at the post below. Not only is Rajan unrepentant about his post, he is
now gloating, adding more of the same disgusting thoughts. This has to be
stopped (somewhere). I have tried asking the offending party to stop but he
refuses to do so. I ask all the moderators to take their responsibilities more
seriously when deciding if such posts are acceptable to this community or not.
Either that or we will see Goanet stoop to the level of the gutter.
