[Goanet] BABUSH MONSERATTE’S INCONSISTENCIES
Goa's Education Minister Mr. Babush Monseratte besides changing political parties has also been found to switch hobbies and educational qualifications. Information sought from the Goas Legislative Secretariat under the Right to information Act has revealed that in his biodata Mr. Monseratte had in 2002 stated that he was S.Y.BA, while in 2007 submitted that he was a SSC holder from St Theresa's High School, Bandra, Bombay. In 2002 Mr. Monseratte had stated that his hobbies were reading books and watching movies, while in 2007 he stated that his hobbies were reading books and singing. In 2002 his sports interests were in Football, Cricket, Long Tennis, Squash, Judo and Boxing, while in 2007 he submitted that his sports activities were only playing Cricket, Football and Table Tennis. His favorite pastime and recreation in his 2002 biodata was watching movies but in 2007 Mr. Monseratte submitted that it was driving. What has remained the same is his profession as Businessman and his special interests, which Mr. Monseratte has stated, is to help the downtrodden and needy people. With the ongoing controversory about the Education Minister's educational qualifications it is surprising that Mr. Monseratte passed only Std 7th though his favourite hobby was reading books. [Goanet] Ref: Article by Wilmix Education or Personal Vendetta'
In response to: Message: 3 Date: 25 Sep 2008 08:17:48 - From: Wilson Mazarello [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] Article by Wilmix Education or Personal Vendetta' Hi Wilmix, From your post I feel that your support for Don Babush Monsoratte de Taleigao will not go unnoticed by the Don himself and you'll probably get a five star treatment at his enclave without any appointments and if you have any sore neighbors or relatives he'll make sure that you are free from their glaring eyes !!! Well done Wilmix, you surely know how to get the right people on your side. If he can get away with attacking a police station in the heart of the Capitol what more can you do, if you can't fight them join them and be one of them, all the best Wilmix with your new found friendship but be very careful a snake can be a dangerous friend or a foe. It's common knowledge that education is not a criteria for politics but honesty, integrity and morality is, but who cares about that any way ? Isn't that right Wilmix ? Honesty, integrity and morality does not exist in the dictionary of most of the present politicians. As it is rightly said Politics is the last resource for scoundrels they are in to politics today only for power and position which unfortunately is the means of making big bucks at the cost of Aam Aadmi. I'll go a little further on your dialogue of Taka khorzota eke kodden, punn to khorpita dusrech kodden ? to put in to right prospective Soshen doleancher kan hadller, sonvsar kuddo zaina ! Probably that's what your high and mighty education minister must have thought. You seem to be an educated guy Wilmix , and I am utterly flabbergasted at your way of thinking that it is no problem to lie on an affidavit just because it is only an educational qualification and everybody lies about it so it's okay for a minister also to do so under oath. Are you in the world of reality that has marched into the 21st century or are you still in the stone age era ? If you have not kept up with the world around you let me remind you that all over the world a good number of Governments and politicians have bitten the dust, for not only a lie but also because they failed to disclose knowingly or un knowingly the truth and here you say, why we should make a big fuss about a minister lying on an affidavit ? Think again Wilmix. Have you forgotten that once you are elected you automatically become public property and are accountable to the general public for all your actions or inactions and should be role model to the younger generation. If you are not aware be advised that lying on an affidavit is a very serious criminal offence. It is because of the mentality of people like you that we are where we are today. It is because we let these bas .ds get away with things like these that they take the public for granted and do what they like without any feeling of guilt or remorse, because they know they can get away with anything and everything even assault, fraud, molestation, bribes, rape and even murder, all this happens every where, so why not in Goa as well, is that what you think Wilmix ? If that's so, you badly need your head to be examined by a shrink , I wouldn't mind paying the consultation fee if I can get even one Goan to think straight !!! Re: [Goanet] What To Do In Falling Markets - Off topic
Roland Francis wrote: I shall soon write a synopsis of a US and Global economic outlook based not on one but on two of North America's leading economic and market analysts. Their credentials are impeccable. Each of them have 40 years of market experience and they are both alumni of different Ivy League business schools besides being CAs, CFAs and MBAs. Sufficiently credible wouldn't you say? Francis, I work with these guys. Some are brilliant Some are burn outs. Some have theory's that cause financial institutions to fail. Currency basically has two fuctions - a store of value and a medium of exchange. In today's world nobody (except of course the hapless person who strores money in a mattress) uses any currency in the world as a store of value. Francis, just last week, people where lining outside Washington Mutual bank branches to get their money back. The bulk of the worlds savings are in currency notes. Next is precious metals and jewelry. Monetary policy means that the US will print unlimited money to combat the vaporization of assets that has taken place. That in itself is not a problem. It will not cause inflation because no money is being put in disposable channels. It is merely replacing money that has disappeared due to bad investments. The money that is being printed, is for bank depositors who want their money back. When there is a run on a bank, people do not want a cheque from the bank. They want cold hard cash. When people cannot trust the bank with their cash, it usually gets put into circulation. This is another factor that leads to inflation. Mervyn you are unduly concerned about the US dollar. Not by a long measure is it going to be replaced or even significanlt depreciated. The US GDP is a father big enough to take care of that baby. Mario has already provided us the terrible Euro/US peso rates. Canadians see it this way. When George Bush became President, one US dollar would buy you CAD $1.50. This year, one US Peso would only buy you CAD 95 cents. If this is not a significant depreciation to you, you don't have anything to worry about. Lastly, last month I finally got my act together, borrowed a little money from Citibank and started my own hedge fund. [Goanet] Cops: Goa nightclubs sitting ducks for terrorists
Cops: Goa nightclubs sitting ducks for terrorists 28 Sep 2008, 0548 hrs IST, Preetu Nair,TNN PANAJI: Nightclubs in the state will continue to rock, but under the glare of security. Calling discotheques and other entertainment venues, sitting ducks for terrorists, the police have issued notices asking them to strengthen security or face consequences, which could lead to imprisonment. Pointing out that several entertainment and nightclubs premises were unsafe, director general of police B S Brar said, Goa is a tourist state and we have to ensure that all premises are reasonably safe. If it is not so, and the owners permit entry of people with this knowledge, legal action would be taken against them under section 304 and 304 (a) of IPC. While section 304 of IPC deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, section 304A deals with causing death by negligence not amounting to culpable homicide. Goa being a tourist destination can be the potential target for terrorist attacks. To ensure security we are taking these steps as a majority of discotheques and entertainment zones in the coastal areas are sitting ducks for terrorists, said SP (north) Bosco George. Rushing to meet the demands of the police, a few nightclubs have hired women bouncers as door security staff along with male bouncers, while others have banned the parking of vehicles close to the venue, besides illuminating the area, installing CCTVs and metal detectors. We have everything in place to ensure safety and security of our guests. We have placed a metal detector at the entrance and have not only employed male bouncers but even female bouncers for the first time, said David D'Souza of Club Titos and Cafe Mambo at Baga. Besides illuminating the place, Titos have also installed CCTVs on the road leading to the nightclubs as well as inside the club and ensured that no one parks close to the venue. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Goa/Cops_Goa_nightclubs_sitting_ducks _for_terrorists/articleshow/3535814.cms ~(^^)~ Avelino

[Goanet] Goa the Abode of Death
As three more youth in their teens get swallowed by the tempting seas and two more youth are arrested for dacoities, a woman jumps in the Mandovi and here body recovered near marriott, there is only one thing that keeps coming back to my mind again and again. The nature is no more going to be tolerant and benevolent to us the ungrateful Goan people. Our ancestors have always shared a very deep bond with the nature around and though illiterate they had a wisdom that far surpassed our present day PhDs. They treated their surroundings as living beings. They just had one principle 'Live and Let Live'. We the so called over enlightened and technologically advanced generations have not acknowledged this fact and have traded our lands, hills and waters for prostitution and vice. All this just for that extra jingle tingle in our pockets. We cheer the real estate sharks demanding industries to employ our so believed rising unemployed professionals senselessly churned out from Colleges. On the other hand, Mr. Ralph D'Souza of TTAG cries that there are no Goan youth coming forward to work in the tourism industry. It's all about Jingle Tingle glamopur economy and easy multiplication of wealth that determines development. We have angered the nature Gods and they will be unforgiving. All our jingle tingle will vanish in the upkeep of security guards and lifeguards but we shall not have peace until we fall on our knees and undo the wrongs. Goa will no more be Goa. It will just be reduced to a can of avarice, lust, conspiracy, mental illnesses and the likes. The party of Peace for which the hippies thronged to Goa's shores is over, henceforth it wil be the party of Death. We are already a suicide point along India's coast. Our rivers will die, the seas will engulf us, the hills will tremor and disease will flourish. Long live the development by Goan crabs and conspirators. On one hand we destroy our 'Special Abode' while on the other we prepare the grounds for 'Special Status', only till the next elections I suppose. -Soter D'Souza

[Goanet] Experience biking on the ghats of Goa
Experience biking on the ghats of Goa 28 Sep, 2008, 0429 hrs IST,John Sarkar, ET Bureau The sun was out after a brief stint of rain. The air was salty and beads of perspiration clung on to anxious faces like transparent mosquitoes. We were all a bit sore after the wild party the previous night. I even had a throbbing head, but once I saw them, I couldn't help but grin. They were all parked neatly in a row-red, black and orange. Scores of Yamaha officials were fussing over them like busy ants, applying last minute touches before the ride. And the FZ 16s basked in all the attention, the sunlight glinting devilishly off their chunky tanks. The bike looked anything but a 150cc machine. BMX type handlebars, an unconventional headlight and low profile fat tyres gave it a brutish street fighter look. And honestly, it looked more classy and contemporary than any of the machines available in this country today. Even the beautifully sculpted indicators and tail lamps gave an impression of careful design. They merged seamlessly into the overall geometry unlike the ones that are plonked on to the so-called modern bikes sold to unsuspecting bike enthusiasts today. During the launch Yamaha dubbed it as the Lord of the Streets. And I didn't have to wonder why. My knees were twitching nervously as the other test riders gathered slowly around the bikes. Tsutomu Mabuchi, CEO and MD of India Yamaha Motor, dressed casually in a pair of shorts went around greeting journalists in his customary cheerful fashion. The riders from Yamaha looked quite the part in their blazing red jackets. And there were nervous smiles all around. Finally, after a short briefing our bikes were assigned to us. I got the key to a Lava Red FZ 16 and could already feel my heart thumping. The idea of a ride around Goa was dormant for a long time and I could finally feel the moment drawing near. I looked around as we were being segregated into three groups. It was a show of riding gear all around-riding jackets, gloves, boots and fancy helmets. But I stood out in the crowd in my worn out black t-shirt and faded jeans. What the heck, I thought; it is so hot and muggy, so might as well stop feeling guilty. I thumbed the electric start. But nothing happened. Immediately, a Yamaha official rushed towards me and fiddled around with the starter button. It was a bit stiff but finally he set it right and the grin returned to my face. Finally, we were off. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Features/The_Sunday_ET/Experience_bi king_on_the_ghats_of_Goa/articleshow/3535583.cms ~(^^)~ Avelino

[Goanet] The Wheel Chair Pawn Shop at GMC
Hi All, Even in this day and age - I cannot for the life of me imagine one living in a CAVE. The new Terminal FIVE in UK. They have decided to charge £1/- for using the trolley. NOT REFUNDABLE. - But the off season mango sellers from Southall have opened a stall at the airport and are taking anything valuable as pawn to refund the passengers £1/- when they return. - Of course the above is a joke, but will Tony see it as such? When I was in Goa last time a lady came to my doorstep wanting to recycle my old trainers, clothes etc. in return she gave me 2 melamine plates. I asked what are they for? she said as payment for your old discarded trainers. I said no! take them back - she looked at me in amazement. I said take the plates AND the trainers. And here I am - Tony saying no one in India will pinch hospital wheel-chairs. In the same sentence he says this: when GMC is bristling with security guards and servants who seem to be idling away their time YES Tony, they are even sleeping with the feral dogs when on duty. Go back to your cave Tony. You are not ready for the 21st Century - yet. ED. - Tony de Sa [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: I cannot for the life of me imagine any one taking a wheel chair, loading it into a vehicle and carting it away - not when GMC is bristling with security guards and servants who seem to be idling away their time. I understand the nurses concern for getting back the wheel chair allotted to their department as they are accountable. But since every wheel chair is labelled with the ward number, if a wheel chair is left out of place, it should be immediately returned to the correct place. Like at airports, a person taking a trolley can move anywhere within the precincts of the airport and just leave it there. There ought to be someone to collect the wheel chairs and return them to their proper places or the wheel chairs could have electronic tagging chips installed to make the task of locating them.
[Goanet] Our Mothers are crying, Can we make a PEACE bomb instead!!!
OUR MOTHERS ARE CRYING!!! The TERROR hearted men now uses tiffin boxes to shorten innocent lifes and earn his reward from the terror boss and lives his future, scott free. Whereas the 9 year old sweetheart boy who loved to carry tiffin boxes to school to make his future, perishes doing an act of kindness. 9 year old sweethearts mother cries for no fault of hers nor was it the fault of her loving child. And the mother of the terror hearted also cries for giving birth to a sweetheart who has now turned terror man. Its always the mothers have to suffer inspite of the 9 months pains and agony to bring them to this world. I am so disturbed that I don’t know what must be going through the minds of those millions of children when they open their tiffin boxes to eat their snacks/food during recess time. What must be going through the minds of thousands of tiffinwallas in Mumbai who from early morning ensure that the tiffin boxes reach the office goers offices? What must be going through the minds of all mothers , fathers , husbands, wifes, people who make food at our home, restaurants while they fill the tiffin boxes for their loved ones? 11 people play for India and earn millions while our army which is around 1.1million who has vowed to protect India are now making headlines because of low pay scales. I think the management of IPL should take over the army thereby India can dream of winning this WAR ON TERROR. We know from below question that usually the fathers are good: What father among you, if his son asks for bread, would give him a stone, or if he asks for a fish, would give him a snake instead of the fish? But sadly I now know that TERROR hearted fathers do exists in this world, many now in India, who keeps a BOMB in a tiffin box instead of chocolates. I feel disgusted by the facts that this explosion is termed as a mild explosion. How can anyone make such a statement. Even if no person is hurt by an explosion the people with concern(those whom we voted in and also those who were voted out) should leave their selfish differences and should join hands to ensure noone ever gets hurt. This is what our goals should be. What is happening now because of so many blasts/crimes/attacks taking place so frequently is that we wake up only if many people die or if there is a big explosion or if many places of worship destroyed or many people are burned/living in fear. God, we have become so thick skinned, people without compassion. We are used to seeing other peoples relatives, child, friend die not knowing that death comes like a thief and this thief might be just outside our doors. We have to leave aside our egos, dreams, aspirations and work towards nabbing these terror hearted before they put an end to us. I hate those countries who invented the BOMB. It would have put an early end to world war 2 and would have saved many lifes(American), but sadly this very bomb has destroyed and is destroying and would continue to destroy many many more innocent lives and can even trigger a much devastating world war III. The BOMB the BOMBER needs to be BOMBED, peacefully. Can we make a PEACE BOMB, instead? Tell me one thing, do you know how to use a wheel chair, the safety mechanism or the emergency features ? We might think we know every thing, first and foremost a wheel chair is the property of the hospital and no one should be allowed to handle it other than the trained staff or the helpers, why are they there for, if not for the safety and protection of patients and the hospital property ? It is the solemn duty of the hospital staff to use the wheel chair, during admission into the hospital, during their stay in hospital as well as at their discharge from hospital, if they do their duty the way they should be doing, why should the relatives and friends of patients be handling the wheel chairs any way ? It a risk to the patient. The patient is the responsibility of the hospital till such time that he is placed securely and safely into an ambulance or a car. [Goanet] Man gets life for sexual abuse of daughter
http://www.deccanherald.com/Content/Sep282008/national2008092792416.asp Man gets life for sexual abuse of daughter DH News Service,Panaji: A father of three has been sentenced to life for sexually abusing his minor daughter for years. DNA test provided the clinching evidence, and the Goa Children's Court did not grant any leniency after tests confirmed that he had fathered his daughter's child. The case has shocked the South Goa village and came to light on a neighbour's complaint to the police. The trial court has withheld the man's name to protect the girl's identity. Nothing less than life imprisonment would meet the ends of justice, Judge Desmond D'Costa felt. The father had taken undue advantage of his own daughter and destroyed the atmosphere of trust and faith. These acts go contrary to the protection and safety that the victim child should have had in her own house, he said. The 16-year-old victim who now has a baby to look after, testified against her father and asked that he be punished with a life term. The abuse began soon after the man's wife, sickened by his alcoholism, left him six years ago. The convicted man has two other minor children, but the trial court dismissed pleas for leniency saying the abuse was the most humiliating events in the life of the victim.

[Goanet] Skit from World Goa Day - Club de Goa, Brisbane. Queensland. Australia
Message Hi guys As you know the Goans have a small association in Brisbane which is called Club de Goa. (The explanation of the name is long winded but suffice to say it is a cross between the Portuguese name and the African-Goan interpretation of the same!) To celebrate WGD, the club had the usual Club Day which is held regularly in a school hall on the 4th Sunday of the month along with a skit, the brain child of talented teacher and actor David Albuquerque from Margao who is now more-or-less a converted Aussie. Here is the video from the World Goa Day skit in August 08. It is in two( 2 ) parts. After viewing the first part the second part will show up on the side bar in related videos. Re: [Goanet] Nostalgia #15
Thank goodness the so-called freedom fighters haven't seen VdeG at the top - or else it would have faced the same fate as that of the statue of Luis de Camões a few hundred metres away. A silly act, if I might say, as the famed poet did not attack, but praised and immortalised the Isle of Love (Anjediva) in his poems. The pedestal, without its rightful owner, is a bit weird, as the pedestal, in the way the Portuguese did these things, has references to the poet. The same goes for the pedestal which features Jai Kisan/Jai Jawan(???) on the Miramar roundabout which, if I am not mistaken, has Afonso de Albuquerque's voyages embossed on its circumference. [Goanet] Romi Konkani move elicits mixed reaction
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Goa/Romi_Konkani_move_elicits_mixed_reaction/rssarticleshow/3535809.cms Romi Konkani move elicits mixed reaction 28 Sep 2008, 0544 hrs IST,TNN PANAJI: The recommendation of the advisory board of the official language cell to allow the use of Konkani in Roman script for official communication received a mixed response, but some felt it would help dispel the friction between groups over the controversy over use of scripts. It is a good step as it will help unite both camps and help the cause of the language, Vincy Quadros, a Konkani writer and poet said. Stating that people in any section should not feel discriminated, he said that the row over the script had unnecessarily created bad blood in the Konkani world. Agreed N Shivdas, Konkani novelist, If people need a certain script for their understanding, why rake up a controversy over it? Naik pointed out that the use of Roman script by government agencies or for official purposes is nothing new. In the past slogans, pamphlets and matter for wider coverage through public displays, especially by the health department was being written in the Roman script. Konkani lovers feel that if the government assures them that their correspondence will be replied to in the Roman script, many will use it for official purpose. Those conversant with it will use it and not English as some do now, Quadros said. However, N Shivdas, who has written in the Roman script for many years, pointed out that the Official Language Act should not be amended at all. It is better to maintain status quo on the language issue, but Roman script needs to be protected, he said. The government has recently pursued a couple of initiatives, especially setting up of a tiatr academy, bowing to demands from protagonists of the Roman script. Naik also points out that the issue of the Roman script should not be identified with any community or religion. Identifying the script with a particular religion or community is bad. Anybody can write in any script, he said. Prashant Naik said that approving of the use of the Roman script for official communication will spur other linguistic groups. We may end up with demands from every section to reply to communication in their own languages, Naik said. * * * http://www.thehindu.com/2008/09/28/stories/2008092851300300.htm Goa firm on implementation of Official Language Act Special Correspondent Goa University urges Government to set up a centre for Konkani studies Website for the Directorate of Official Language to be launched soon PANAJI: The Goa Government on Friday decided to take steps to implement the State Official Language Act (OLA) in State administration. Preparation of administrative terminology, training to government officials in Konkani language and publication of Official Gazette in official language were some of the issues discussed at length at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Friday. The meeting decided to constitute a subcommittee under the chairmanship of MP Shantaram Naik to study various aspects of the issue of use of official language in the administration. The subcommittee will submit its report by December 15. At the meeting, it was informed that there was a proposal of the Goa University requesting the State Government to set up a centre for Konkani studies. The Chief Minister said that an appropriate decision would be taken on the proposal only after a thorough study. A website for the Directorate of Official Language would also be launched soon, said officials of the directorate. Faced with the pressure from Marathi language protagonists on one hand and the proponents of Roman script demanding equal status on the other, the State Government has been dilly dallying for long over measures to implement the Act. The State's OLA passed in 1987 after a major agitation made Konkani in Devnagari script the official language of Goa and provided for use of Marathi for all official purposes. * * * http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Romi_Konkani_in_offices_soon/rssarticleshow/3532770.cms Romi Konkani in offices soon 27 Sep 2008, 0355 hrs IST, Raju Nayak,TNN PANAJI: Supporters of Konkani in the Roman script tasted victory, when the advisory board of the official language cell at its meeting on Friday recommended the use of Konkani in Roman script in government offices. Hi Santosh In my experience, I will agree with you that Viviana is quite happy to provide her name and reason for a post rejection. On this count I have the highest regard for her approach re Goanet and have nil disagreement with her. However, I think I'd find it easier to extract a tooth with a pair of pliers than get Bosco to provide his name and any reason for a post rejection. Moreover he has told me personally in Toronto that since April 2008, he was no longer a moderator. This assertion of his was definitely not true nor that moderation was undertaken by people as normal members of Goanet. As to Frederick for whom I definitely still hold in high esteem, perhaps you will have noted that I indicated that I was not attacking the person but the systemic mess that Goanet is in regarding hundreds of unexplained post rejects. [Goanet] Short films to be highlight at Goa festival
Short films to be highlight at Goa festival http://www.indiaenews.com/bollywood/20080927/147295.htm Short films will be the flavour at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) which will be held in Goa in November, officials said Saturday. The Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), which is the nodal agency for organising this annual film festival, claims this is the first time in the history of Indian film festivals, that short films have been given a holistic thrust, backed by a professional business model. 'IFFI's Short Film Centre (SFC) will serve as a business platform for makers of short films, buyers, festival organisers and funding agencies. This has never happened before,' ESG chief executive officer Manoj Srivastava told IANS in Panaji. Of the 500 national and international film makers who are expected to submit their films at the Short Film Centre, 20 would be selected for the international competition and 10 for the competition on environmental issues. The cumulative prize money for both the sections is pegged at $26,000. 'What we intend to do is bridge the existing gap between the various players in the short film circuit and therefore increase opportunities of professional interaction,' Srivastava said. The ESG is working out this exercise in association with the Indian Documentary Producers Association (IDPA) and the short films will be selected by an international jury, once the submission deadline expires Oct 15. IFFI's other innovation is the creation of a special platform which will enable short-film makers to show their product to prospective buyers or funding agents. 'All the documentary films would be loaded on a central server. The film-maker would only have to select the film they need to showcase to a prospective client and run it on specially designed mini screens,' Srivastva said. Justifying this year's thrust on short films Srivastava claimed there were 10 short films produced for every one feature film made in India each year. 'The Short Film Centre is our contribution to keep the short film movement chugging,' said Srivastava, a short film maker himself. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Goa/School_starts_probe_into_Youtube_fight/rssarticleshow/3535816.cms School starts probe into Youtube fight 28 Sep 2008, 0550 hrs IST,TNN PANAJI: The principal of RMS higher secondary school, Margao, has started an inquiry into an alleged fight between two girl students which was filmed and uploaded on Youtube. A show cause notice will be issued to both the students as per the Goa Education Rules. Confirming this, school principal Vinod Pawar said, I had asked both the parties to record their statements, but the victim girl has yet to give her statement. On the basis of the statements collected from the school teachers, other students who were witness to the incident, the victim and the accused student, we will come to a conclusion and then decide on the course of action. However, we have still kept open the option for both parties to settle the matter amicably, Pawar added. The victim, in her complaint to the police, said that on September 13 at 3 pm her classmate called her in the classroom telling her that she wanted to talk to her. She then allegedly abused the victim and even hit her badly. The victim further complained that on the next day she learnt that a video clipping of her being beaten up was put up on the net and everyone started calling her up, causing much embarrassment to her. I have not done anything wrong. I never retaliated or abused the girl who was beating me. But she accused me of spreading rumours against her and beat me. I am innocent and I am traumatised with the whole episode and hurt that it has been uploaded on the net, said the victim. However, her classmates believe that both of them are at fault. Meanwhile, the school authorities are now working on stringent methods to curb the use of mobile phones in the school. Pawar added, Whenever we catch a student using a mobile phone in the school, we call their parents and take an undertaking from them that if they are again caught, they will be issued a school leaving certificate. But the number of students using mobile phones in the school is large and we can't everyday indulge in policing and checking the students' bags.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Goa/GU_keeps_re-election_decision_in_abeyance/rssarticleshow/3535811.cms GU keeps re-election decision in abeyance 28 Sep 2008, 0545 hrs IST,TNN PANAJI: In a further twist to the election controversy, Goa University (GU) has decided to keep in abeyance its decision on re-elections to the executive union of the students' council at the Goa University. It may be recalled that on Friday, the GU had declared the elections 'null and void'. In a press release on Saturday, assistant registrar R R Bhatikar said that the decision to hold the order in abeyance was taken by professor A V Afonso, in-charge vice chancellor of GU with a view to find a solution to the vexed issue. 'The entire process of elections to the executive union of the students' council will now be referred to the executive council of the university for review,' he stated. The development came about even as members of the BJP's students' cell staged a protest against the registrar's order at the university on Saturday. Later addressing a press conference, opposition leader Manohar Parrikar said that the Congress was resorting to political pressure to quash the election results. We asked our students' cell not to resort to violence, but protest in a democratic, but strong way. It was only after that, did the univeristy keep its decision in abeyance, Parrikar said. Referring to Friday's event where the GU announced that the elections were declared null and void, Parrikar said that such occurences did not even take place in Bihar. Commenting on the committee set up to inquire into complaints of alleged irregularities in the conduct of elections, the opposition leader said: Who is this committee, what right do they have? What has happened is a direct murder of democracy. This does not even take place in Bihar, he said. Ultimately, students are sufferers of bad politics, Parrikar added. It maybe recalled here that GU had issued a press release on Friday declaring re-elections. The release stated, The decision to declare the elections null and void was taken after the Committee, which was set up to inquire into complaints of alleged irregularities in the conduct of elections, reported that the procedure followed in the conduct of elections by the directorate of students' welfare was not in accordance with statutory provisions. The note stated that re-elections to the executive union of the students' council will be held at the earliest. The release further stated that elections to the posts of University Class Representatives (UCRs) and University Faculty Representatives (UFRs) are, however, valid.

They had flouted the ban on swimming imposed around this time every year because of rip currents-withdrawing monsoon currents which have a seaward pull. Although lifeguards will be commissioned on October 1, the sea will be safe only by mid-October, experts said. Two groups of students were involved in the first two tragedies. While a group of 17 from an institute of shipping technology in Vasco had gone to the sea shore at Canaguinim near Cabo de Rama in Betul, the other group comprising five students of the Guardian Angel Institute of Catering and Management at Sanvordem were visiting the dreaded Sunset Beach in Betalbatim that has claimed many lives over the years. All of them were in the age group of 18 to 20. Cuncolim police said three of the Vasco students ventured into the waters at Canaguinim around 12.15 pm. While Yohan Kuvarupu and Amit Kutre met a watery grave, their friend Pranay Paunikar was rescued by a speedboat crew that rushed to the boys' rescue. Yohan's and Amit's fathers work for the Mormugao Port Trust.
[Goanet] RESTRUCTURING OF AG'S FEES AN EYEWASH
The recent re-structuring of fees payable to the Advocate General of Goa is a sham and a mere eye wash. The government had gone back on its assurance that the fees of the Advocate General of Goa would be brought on par with the neighboring states. Even after the restructuring of fees, Mr. Subodh Kantak would be paid upto a maximum of Rupees 5 lakhs a month though the Advocate General of mega states like Karnataka, Maharastra and Gujarat average around a mere Rs. 40,OOO a month. Mr. Subodh Kantak continues to be India's highest paid Advocate General earning much more than even the President of India. While Goa's Advocate General Mr. Subodh Kantak gets paid Rs. 8000/- each time he stands up in the High Court, his counterpart in Gujarat is paid Rs. 700/- per day per case only if it is an effective hearing. The AG of Maharashtra is paid Rs.5000/- per case, upto a maximum of Rs. 7000/- per day irrespective of the number of cases he appears. The AG in Karnataka gets Rs. 1000/- for the first case and Rs. 250/- each for the subsequent cases upto a maximum of Rs. 10,000/- per day. The government should recover all the extra money paid to Mr. Subodh Kantak by way of double and excessive billing especially in the Saleli case where the Advocate General appeared in the High Court on 27th January 2006 in the bail applications of the 102 accused and was paid 102 times Rs. 8000/-, i.e. Rupees eight lakhs sixteen thousand although it was factually a common argument for the whole batch of bail applications and he should have claimed only Rs. 8000/- While the Government was taking undue care and pampering the Advocate General, nothing was being done to hike the salaries and improve the benefits of Subordinate Court Judges, Public prosecutors, Assistant Public Prosecutors and other Government advocates. Yes Mario! Become a Muslim and put your theory to practise. For sure when you die god will forgive you, Christian god may sent you to purgatory for a short while for abandoning the catholic faith, but the Muslim god will have 72 virgins waiting for you - it is written in the Qur'an. (I saw it in the channel 4 program in UK under the specific name of QUR'AN). Therefore the Muslims have got every reason to kill. Secondly the program QUR'AN said that it is written that no person should listen to another person about the QUR'AN, and that includes not listening to the Mullahs. Immediately after Mohammeds death there were no Mullahs and up till 1973 not a single woman covered their head or wore the Hijab, that included all the Mullahs 4 women (wives). Suddenly it has become obligatory to wear the Hijab? The University lecturer asked in the Qur'an program. ED. -- mario rodrigues [EMAIL PROTECTED]Said:- OUR MOTHERS ARE CRYING!!! But not having seen these wonders of the modern world, I cannot comment but just accept your word for it! That you speak in jest is very understandable even to a Goan country bumpkin like me. After all didn't our elders say some thing like this? [Voile khanniea vellem pann socoile khanieavellea pannak hanstali] For those not familiar with GMC or have never been to GMC, the security guards are (in theory, at least) supposed to control parking, prevent theft of hospital ware, and prevent inward ingress from unwanted animals, two or four legged. That, as Edward says, they are sleeping with feral dogs when on duty shows that the GMC Administration is at fault. The issue is not about paying for the wheel chairs - which BTW are free and supposed to be handled by the staff of GMC and not patient's relatives, its a question of demeaning the person requesting for a chair by questioning his honesty, integrity and plain civic sense by demanding a deposit when there is no such provision in the Hospital rules!. There are a number of people who come to GMC who have nothing to keep as deposit - what then, should they keep a relative as ransom? And if there is no one else at hand? [Goanet] The Testimony of one Christian- Julio Ribeiro
The testimony of one Christian- Julio Ribeiro (Times of India dt 28.9.2008) I am a Christian, a Roman Catholic to be precise. I have suddenly realised this. It is quite amazing that I did not think of myself as a Christian all these years! I was an Indian. Religion was in the private domain. No one made me feel that I was different and I never felt different. On one occasion in a temple in Punjab even the VHP's Ashok Singhal seemed well disposed! Why did it suddenly occur to me that I was a Christian? I really do not know the answer. I only know that I am sorely disappointed with the BJP for not reining in the VHP and Bajrang Dal, who like the SIMI and its offshoot, the Indian Mujahideen, feel that the best and only way to attain peace is to kill those who they think are different. My ancestors, like those of most Christians in India, were Hindus. True, I have a strange name. It is Portuguese in origin, but neither I nor the numerous other Christians sporting Portuguese surnames like Fernandes (George is a friend of the BJP) have any Portuguese blood. Our ancestors got these surnames when they were baptised and the surnames were those of the different clerics who officiated at their initiation. Was force or coercion used? I dare say it was. If not force, then certainly coercion. Lure of land, I learn, was the main instrument of that coercion. All land was appropriated by the conquerors and only those who converted retained their share. This, I dare say, was a powerful attraction. Even today, ownership of land is a dominant craving. Times were different in 1540 when the Portuguese landed in Goa. There was the Inquisition and the fervour of religious conviction. But I refuse to believe that force can be an option in this day and age. Can anyone be 'forced' to convert as the fanatics suggest? Possibly, there can be inducement. But how far can one go with inducements? Money, land, jobs, education? If money and land were in plenty to distribute, all or most converts would be immensely affluent. But that is hardly the case. Most Christian missionaries concentrate on education, health, social welfare. This may tempt somemarginalised families to cross over, but the answer to that would be to undertake such efforts yourself and not kill those who are doing what you yourself should have done long ago. The empowerment of the marginalised threatens the vested interests of the upper classes. For generations, tribals and scheduled castes have been kept down. Christian missionaries, with their stress on education and health, have challenged the foundations of this social order. That, I believe, is the cause of the present upheaval. The Christian missionaries do believe that their own religion is the only true one. All the three Abrahamanical religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, grounded in the theory of creation, believe that theirs is the only true religion. Judaism is not known to convert. The other two do. In this day and age, it is difficult to support the notion of conversions. I, for one, do not. To my mind it is not necessary to convert anyone. Even the Catholic Church to which I belong has accepted that good human beings, irrespective of religious belief, can attain salvation. But there are those who think otherwise. Should they be butchered? It is not only unlawful to kill. It is also immoral. And if the VHP and Bajrang Dal, like the SIMI and the Indian Mujahideen, do not understand this simple rule, it is the duty of the Indian State to make them aware of it. No excuses should be advanced to mitigate the horrendous nature of their barbarity, as some BJP leaders have done. Because excuses are quickly turned into mandates. Personally, I do not believe that many Hindus have been converted to Christianity in recent times in Karnataka or even in Orissa. In Kerala, the Christians have been around for the past 2,000 years. But if some conversions have taken place, there are legal remedies available. Surely no one can be permitted to take the law into his own hands and become prosecutor, judge and executioner rolled into one. And this is why I am disappointed with the BJP. The party has not come out strongly against the atrocities heaped on the Christians of Orissa and Karnataka. L K Advani himself studied at St Patrick's, a Jesuit school in Karachi. Nobody tried to convert him or other boys and girls who have passed out of Christian schools and colleges in India. He and they continue to be good Hindus, or Muslims or Sikhs. More important, they continue to be good human beings. And that is what true Christianity is all about. That is what I look for in my religion and what I admire in the teachings of Christ. Love, compassion, justice. These are universal values taught by all religions that the VHP and the Bajrang Dal, SIMI and the IM should try and imbibe. If they do not they should stop calling themselves Hindus or Muslims.
[Goanet] State of minorities in India
Is it really Muslims whose credibility is at stake? - M J Akbar Times of India dt 28.8.2008) There is nothing more subversive than the alternative narrative. A parallel version of the Godhra incident and riots sabotaged the re-election of the NDA government four years ago. A subaltern variation of the police operation at Batla House, near the Jamia Milia Islamia University on 19 September, is undermining the credibility of the Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi government today. It cannot undermine the credibility of home minister Shivraj Patil because he has none. The first doubts began to circulate even while Patil, wearing a very self-satisfied expression on his face, began to congratulate himself in front of television cameras for delivering bullet-justice to two young men living in a small apartment of this building. He had, he said, personally supervised the encounter, presumably without taking any break whatsoever for fresh laundry. Ironically, doubt needs the support of evidence. If it is mere partisan belligerence, it will last no longer than a puff of acrid smoke. Some things did not quite add up in the official story. It was, to use a phrase familiar from the Sherlock Holmes oeuvre, the dog that did not bark that raised the first question. You rarely slip on hard concrete; it is generally the banana skin that turns a measured tread into a painful fall. The Rashomon effect, where the same event induces sharply different perspectives, can make for intriguing fiction; in real life, it can rip up communication lines carefully planted by a government trying to sell a fable. The first question, followed by two photographs, began to dilute the triumphalism of the Delhi police even during the early phase of its self-glorification. The authorities noted, with satisfaction, that two 'terrorists' had been killed. They added that two had escaped from the rented urban cage where they lived, which was all they could afford. The deaths were explicable; the escape was not. The building had only one entrance, and hence only one exit. It was surrounded by policemen. How could the two escape? When the murmur became a buzz, the police attempted damage control with a weak suggestion. The two could have escaped through the roof, hopping across rooftops. But it was daytime. The roofline was surely as closely monitored as the roadline. Neighbourhood eyes were tense and alert. Had anyone seen this acrobatic, even melodramatic, form of flight? No. Two pictures propped up two ends of a growing conviction of foul play. One showed Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who lost his life, walking towards something, presumably the car that would take him to hospital, supported by two colleagues (one in a tie, the other in a T-shirt). His gunshot wound was obvious. There was a heavy patch of blood on the upper part of one arm, and only a faint discoloring on the lower front of his bush shirt, near the abdomen. Police had said that Sharma had died from a bullet in the stomach. The picture proved that the bullet had not hit the stomach, and that Sharma was able to come down four flights albeit with help. A bullet in the stomach would have left him a stretcher case, and caused far more blood loss, particularly through the exit wound. The official story changed. The self-acclamation had been blared over media, the change was released discreetly, through a plant that said that he died of a heart attack caused by blood loss. The questions multiplied: was Sharma hit by what is known in military parlance as 'friendly fire'? The police would have been far more comfortable about their theories if some intrepid photographer had not snapped Sharma. The second picture, however, was part of their public relations offensive. It showed three suspects, Zia ur Rahman, Saqib Nishad and Mohammad Shakeel. As is usual in the case of suspects being put on display, their faces were covered with cloth: the police are gracious enough to disguise the identity of suspects for they cannot be deemed guilty until a court has passed judgment. But there was significant departure from normal practice. These three had been shrouded by Arab-style headdresses (made famous by Yasser Arafat, and now a staple of Arab identity in countless TV images) instead of the anonymous black cloth used by police. Who had decided that these three suspects should be given an Arab identity? Was this a not-so-subliminal message to even the densest in the audience about the nature of the enemy, that the headdress was a signature of Islamic terrorism? Did this brilliant idea emerge from the home minister, now the hands-on commander, or did it emerge from somewhere lower down the food chain? Indian Muslims did not need to open a political dictionary to gauge the meaning of this forced symbolism? They knew that it was an attempt to stigmatize the whole community and link terrorism in India with an international

Re: [Goanet] The Wheel Chair Pawn Shop at GMC
I agree absolutely with Tony. Wheel-chairs are meant for patients who are unable to or should not walk. These clients of the hospital should be wheeled by support staff trained to use wheelchairs - NOT by relatives. What nonsense is GMC up to? I have never seen or heard of such callous dereliction of a duty towards a patient especially one who is (temporarily or permanently) unable to walk without assistance. About the deposit - First of all, I hope there is no statutory provision for this discriminatory act against the disabled. Secondly, I suggest that disabled human beings are significantly different from airport baggage. Even civilian airports know this. That is why they have (paid) baggage trolley for baggage BUT assisted wheelchair service for humans who are unable to walk. I would have thought that the doctors at GMC would have been a wee bit more sensitive to the needs of the disabled when compared to the airline personnel at Dabolim. It appears that they are not. [Goanet] Hindu fundamentals are under attack- Shashi Tharoor
Hindu fundamentals are under attack - Shashi Tharoor (Times of India dt.28.9.2008) There are basically two kinds of politics in our country: the politics of division and the politics of unity. The former is by far the more popular, as politicians seek to slice and dice the electorate into ever-smaller configurations of caste, language and religion, the better to appeal to such particularist identities in the quest for votes. But what has happened in recent weeks in Orissa, and then in parts of Karnataka, and that threatens to be unleashed again in tribal districts of Gujarat, is a new low in our political life. The attacks on Christian families, the vandalism of their places of worship, the destruction of homes and livelihoods, and the horrific rapes, mutilations and burning alive that have been reported, have nothing to do with religious beliefs - neither those of the victims nor of their attackers. They are instead part of a contemptible political project whose closest equivalent can in fact be found in the Indian Mujahideen bomb blasts in Delhi, Jaipur, and Ahmedabad, which were set to go off in hospitals, marketplaces and playgrounds. Both actions are anti-national; both aim to divide the country by polarising people along their religious identities; and both hope to profit politically from such polarisation. We must not let either set of terrorists prevail. The murderous mobs of Orissa sought to kill Christians and destroy their homes and places of worship, both to terrorise the people and to send the message 'you do not belong here'. What have we come to that a land that has been a haven of tolerance for religious minorities throughout its history should have sunk so low? India's is a civilisation that, over millennia, has offered refuge and, more important, religious and cultural freedom, to Jews, Parsis, Muslims and several varieties of Christians. Christianity arrived on Indian soil with St Thomas the Apostle ('Doubting Thomas'), who came to the Kerala coast some time before 52 AD and was welcomed on shore by a flute-playing Jewish girl. He made many converts, so there are Indians today whose ancestors were Christian well before any European discovered Christianity (and before the forebears of many of today's Hindu chauvinists were even conscious of themselves as Hindus). The India where the wail of the muezzin routinely blends with the chant of mantras at the temple, and where the tinkling of church bells accompanies the gurudwara's reading of verses from the Guru Granth Sahib, is an India of which we can all be proud. But there is also the India that pulled down the Babri Masjid, that conducted the pogrom in Gujarat and that now unleashes its hatred on the 2% of our population who are Christians. As a believing Hindu, I am ashamed of what is being done by people claiming to be acting in the name of my faith. I have always prided myself on belonging to a religion of astonishing breadth and range of belief; a religion that acknowledges all ways of worshipping God as equally valid - indeed, the only major religion in the world that does not claim to be the only true religion. Hindu fundamentalism is a contradiction in terms, since Hinduism is a religion without fundamentals; there is no such thing as a Hindu heresy. How dare a bunch of goondas shrink the soaring majesty of the Vedas and the Upanishads to the petty bigotry of their brand of identity politics? Why should any Hindu allow them to diminish Hinduism to the raucous self-glorification of the football hooligan, to take a religion of awe-inspiring tolerance and reduce it to a chauvinist rampage? Hinduism, with its openness, its respect for variety, its acceptance of all other faiths, is one religion which has always been able to assert itself without threatening others. But this is not the Hindutva spewed in hate-filled diatribes by communal politicians. It is, instead, the Hinduism of Swami Vivekananda, who, at Chicago's World Parliament of Religions in 1893, articulated best the liberal humanism that lies at the heart of his (and my) creed. Vivekananda asserted that Hinduism stood for both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. He quoted a hymn: As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee. Vivekananda's vision - summarised in the credo Sarva Dharma Sambhava - is, in fact, the kind of Hinduism practised by the vast majority of Hindus, whose instinctive acceptance of other faiths and forms of worship has long been the vital hallmark of Indianness. Vivekananda made no distinction between the actions of Hindus as a people (the grant of asylum, for instance) and their actions as a religious

Dear Valmiki Carmo Rod was a Uncle of mine on my meternal side, so is my Favourite and Uncle Juuny Rodrigues based in kuwait Thank you for the greta article, God Bless Ayres On Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 6:36 AM, Valmiki Faleiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: GOAN MUSIC-8 By Valmiki Faleiro Alfred Rose must be the most prolific of Konknni 'cantarists' (singers.) He set most of them to music himself, sang a few hundred, solo or in duet with wife Rita, or others. Most, however, were sung by other artistes. Alfred did a wide variety of songs, from serious to satirical, melodic to mournful. Like Alexinho de Candolim before him, many of his songs carried a strong social message, even if at times he sounded like a Sunday 'sermao.' Some despised the nasal in his otherwise versatile soprano voice. And, even though original most of the time, Alfred sometimes borrowed popular western tunes. But, as one of his greatest fans and my friend Filipe Dias of Madel-Margao says, Alfred's music was customer oriented. When fans requested him to set songs to particular western tunes, Alfred obliged. Like music generated by the Konknni stage, it's not possible to discuss Cantaram save in passing. My personal choice always was songs that spun on humour. Let's move to another genre of Goan songsters. At a time when Goa's independent identity was under grave threat, in the run up to the Jan-1967 Opinion Poll, several gifted Goans used their pen, voice and music to save the day for their homeland. Men like Dr. Manoharrai Sardessai, Adv. Uday Bhembre and Shankar Bhandari worked hard, through their song, to stem the tide of public opinion that was almost sure to have forever obliterated the idea of a distinct Goa. Songs like Goenchea Mojea Goenkaranno and Goenkar zaiat zage sung by 'Goyem Shahir' Ulhas Buyao and Don Pana by Assolna-born vocalist Carmo Rod, still echo. In easier times, men like Bhembre wrote songs like Chann'neache Rati (sung by Buyao), while Buyao himself produced quality songs, the most hilarious of which, to my mind, is Gagar kiteak foddta re? rendered, with equal finesse, by Varsha Usgaonkar. Dorya Deger by Santosh and Mamta Prabhugaonkar, with pleasing vocal skills, delivered a powerful message on inter-caste marriages. These are included in Buyao's album, Roop Tujem Laita Pixem. Mangalore also produced a rich harvest of cantaram. Helen D'Cruz and Henry D'Souza created radio history with Ye, ye, Katrina (1971), one among many in their repertoire. Then there were Jerome de Souza, Lourdes Collaco, Agnes D'Souza, among others. Wilfy Remimbus and Eric Ozario were giants on Mangalore's music matrix. In this penultimate piece, some more 'firsts' in Goan music… The first recorded Konknni song (on a vinyl gramophone record) was by Joao Agostinho, the Pai Tiatrist's Mog mirmiriancho (HMV, 1910), sung by him with his daughter Sofia. The first recorded Konknni audio cassette was by Alfred Rose. The first Konknni audio CD was by Remo Fernandes. To Remo also goes the credit of re-doing old classics like 'Rajan Prema' and 'Kustoba Rane.' The (unofficial) title of Nightingale of Goa was

[Goanet] Goanet] Open letter to Goanet and other Goan related
Dear Goanetters, Goanet's Moderation is at times actually extremist! To add to it, Bosco can be quite condescending ... as if he has inherited some divine rights on Goanet like the Stewarts and the Tudors of Britain that is no longer Great. I have nothing against Bosco D'Mello but Moderator is a term that seems incongruous when used to describe him! Sole Arbitrator may be a better term to use. ;-) I have no problems with Viviana or any one else on Goanet, now that my friend and irritator Frederick Noronha has become an occasional Moderator (or Approver ;-)] on Goanet. I have had to ask him to withdraw as Moderator on on Aldona Net and St. Mary's alumni list due to strong differences on the meaning of the term moderation. Both these lists are now moderated by moderate people, not extremists like Frederick and Miguel ;-( Jenifer Lewis has been doing a wonderful job of moderating Vascokars United yahoogroups and Gaspar with Gulf Goans yahoogroups. So is Savio doing a great job with Aldona Net and four girls are doing a great job of Chilli Net as we call the St. Mary's Convent alumni list in which I am a member by virtue of the three years in that school. Bosco seems to be suffering from Moderation fatigue like some people in Goa are suffering form Agitation fatigue. In the GBA, Patricia resigned gracefully while Oscar resigned with a bang.Bosco can choose his own style or at least take a sabbatical for rest and recreation like the G.I. Re: [Goanet] Kuttombachem Zhadd ... what does one call one's sister-in-law's husband?
Dear Ingrid, Thanks for the response. However, I do recommend that you learn the Konkani terms for various family members to get the flavour of our wonderful native language and state. I am retaining a few of the terms from DOMNIC'S GOA, a book every Goa needs to read ... after buying a copy for self and at least one friend, to know more about Goa and to encourage Goan authors to publish. It is a shame that publications by Goans do not easily sell a thousand copies unless they are targeting the tourists as potential readers. How to be an Instant Goan by Valentino Fernandes has sold thousands of copies! Being in the publication business, you will understand how Cecil Pinto, Frederick Noronha and, of course, Domnic Fernandes feel about publishing, editing and writing[respectively] a good book for Goans ... who want a free copy and, even then, unwilling to read the book! ;-( We got quite a few school students to read the book DOMNIC'S GOA by making it the recommended reference material for a GK Quiz focussed on Goa. A gift by an alumnus to teachers in our school, in the memory of his father [who was also our teacher]has become a treasure for the retired teachers to read. For those still younger, and with hormones [not from HRT] revving in the body, the book is still useful as can be seen below: Baiko-la firaila aila re kanttalla Mevnni paije mhalla! in Marathi or Bhaillek bonvddavpacho aila re vaz, Mevnni zai mhakam re az is a song one can sing along with one's Mevnno [wife's brother] if, like me,one is married to an only daughter. If the wife has a sister, it is dangerous to sing it with the Mevnno. One can sing the song with one's Saddu [mevnni's husband], only if one's wife has two or more sisters. Otherwise, the Mevnni one sings about will be the Saddu's wife .. and he will not take kindly to a suggestion that one wants to flirt with his wife. ;-( There is a growing awareness and understanding of promiscuity in the present day Goa,which is on the verge of a becoming a major Rest Recreation hub like Pattaya-Thailand or Subic Bay-Philippines for the US Seventh fleet, now stationed in the Arabian Sea because of the Iraq Afganistan conflict instead of the South China Sea during the Vietnam war. The so-called offshore casino ships are jostling for space in the River Mandovi and Porvorim's Majestic Hotel has recently started Casino Paradise bringing the home truth closer home. Prostitution is also keeping pace with the rising affluence and libido of the domestic tourists and the Gorah Babu. Dr. Rajesh Dhume, Senior Psychiatrist and Secretary of Psychaitrists Society of Goa, spoke about patholigical gamblers among ladies from the so-called elite families of Goa. He was speaking at a panel discussion on Tourism in Goa organised by the Rotary Club of Mapuca with Ralph deSouza of the deSouza Group and TTAG and Adv. Albertina Almeida as the other panelists. Domnic wrote that ancient truth that is going to come home to roost: Ghoran nokllo maim-manv, bhair zanna sogllo ganv. (The in-laws are in the dark, but the whole village knows.) Re: [Goanet] What To Do In Falling Markets - Off Topic
Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 15:06:14 -0400 From: Venantius Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am a bit surprised that my observation elicited the observation, shallow and grossly misleading and totally out of context. Unless you are saying that rich people have to be rewarded through a variety of techniques that should never be addressed as socialism for the rich, but perhaps just rewards for their initiatives in generating wealth, and in offering people like me a job. Mario explains: Why would you be surprised? I explained exactly why I described your comments, and Mervyn's, as shallow and grossly misleading. In short, there is no such thing as socialism for the rich in US policy in the context of your response to Mervyn's comment which you were referring to. To begin with, most corporations that are mismanaged are not bailed out - they are typically acquired at huge losses to their stockholders. Even when they are, their owners pay a heavy price. Finally, US tax policy is such that low income Americans pay little or no income taxes. Venantius wrote: You also quote some valuable statistics, all very true indeed. Yes it well may be 97% or even more, but what would that 97% entail if the upper 50% were paid what they really owed. I know I do not control that but can include this as a relevant point. That mite in the form of income taxes from the upper 50% would be an astronomical 97% then. Mario responds: No, it is 97 %, not more. I have no idea what you mean by, but what would that 97% entail if the upper 50% were paid what they really owed. I know I do not control that but can include this as a relevant point. That mite in the form of income taxes from the upper 50% would be an astronomical 97% then. Everyone in a capitalist society is paid what they are deemed to be worth by those who own the businesses or their representatives in management who are responsible and accountable to the owners. When the top 1% pay 40% of all income taxes, and the bottom 50% pay 3%, then how can you call this a system of socialism for the rich. Secondly, as I mentioned, those who are in the top 1% are not the same in 2006 as the list in 2001. So, the composition of who exactly are the rich changes constantly in the US - it is not always the same people. One cannot make the case that the rich are getting richer because many of them are actually getting poorer relative to some years ago and being replaced by others who were less rich some years ago. Venantius wrote: A bailout is also maintaining business as usual. But what do paintbrushes like me know? Mario responds: I guess it depends on the paintbrush. However, the fact is that a bailout is not even close to being business as usual. In most cases those deemed responsible for the corporate debacle pay a heavy personal price, and lose their jobs and are replaced by others. We, as taxpayers, pay a heavy price if the objectives of the bailout are not met. Perhaps you have missed the news that Fannie Mae, Freddy Mac, Lehman Bros and AIG are all under investigation by the FBI. That is not business as usual. Bear Sterns and Lehman Bros. and Washington Mutual will all cease to exist as viable entities. That is neither socialism for the rich nor business as usual. Venantius wrote: But thinking again, its better to just listen in on your comments, rather than even briefly commenting as I do with some other topics. Mario responds: Surely you do not expect me to agree with a proposition that does not fit the facts? If, on the other hand, you had criticized the faulty lending policies that had been foisted on the banking system by Democrats since the Carter administration, all interested in social engineering at someone else's expense, or criticized corporate top executive salaries that are not tied to the performance of the company, or golden parachutes which I abhor when they apply to failed executives, or criticized the top executives at Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac who were forced to resign for inappropriate accounting practices then showed up as advisors to Barack Obama, who received more contributions per year from this organization's employees and PACs than anyone else in Congress, or shown some appreciation for who produces most of the jobs in America and pays most of the taxes, I would have agreed with you. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.viewpageId=75586 Venantius wrote: A while ago a person who I esteem made a point to me that I should concentrate more on my personal work, rather than engage on Goanet ? Mario responds: I would agree with the first part, but the rest of the advice seems shortsighted to me, because surely you can do both. I would discourage you from withdrawing from the fray. Instead, read up on these economic and financial issues from a number of sources, so that you are more familiar with how these things work. If you are really interested in how the US

Thipsay stated that 'he had never seen such tremdendous growth in any state across India, the way that chess was growing by leaps and bounds in Goa'. He mentioned that the State Association was taking all 'the right steps' to promote the sport across the length and breadth of the state. He congratulated the organisers for smooth conduct of the tournament considering the fact that 'there was not a single appeal or protest during the thirteen rounds' and went on to add that he would be happy to visit Goa 'any time in the future for playing in well planned events such as this one'. Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi of Air India, while speaking on the occasion expressed his happiness over the fact that in Goa it is mostly the kids that are coming forward to participate in tournaments in a big way. Being India's youngest grandmaster himself, Parimarjan stated that this was a 'healthy trend' that should be kept alive at all costs as it is 'the youngsters that will keep the torch burning for the future generations'. He mentioned that he will take 'happy memories back with him from Goa' and that he will be more than happy to visit again in the future for chess. The Chief Guest of the function Datta Naik presented a copy of his latest book to Grandmaster Thipsay stating that by strange cooincidence his latest novel included a chapter on chess. Sometimes when I check my spam folder, I find them wedged between some Nigerian scam and news that I've won the Canadian lottery. Artificial intelligence is very good at detecting the similarity between mails. Mario observes: I think Fred can clear all this up, especially if he reads the following analysis and gets to my concluding advice to him, just before I respond to Eddie below. In the interests of full disclosure I do not know either Fred or Cecil or Jose or Selma personally - only through Goanet. I have an idea of what Cecil looks like and Fred as well because their pictures have been published. Cecil is one of the best satirists we have in our Goan community and Fred is a decent journalist with a distinct political point of view which I disagree with most of the time. I would not be able to vouch for their fine-ness if my life depended on it - and I am not sure how Selma can vouch for Fred and denigrate Cecil, though I suspect it is because Cecil has chided her for her opinions more than once, but then, so have I, yet she loves me like a favorite uncle:-)) Her comments about her spam filter insinuates that Cecil spams her with personal emails. If he has done so I would be surprised because my experience with Cecil is that he does not either pull his punches or suffer fools gladly and doesn't care who knows it.. Please understand I am NOT calling anyone a fool - at least at this time. So, everyone calm down. I want to focus this important issue before it goes completely off the rails with Jose's pawky - look it up in the dictionary - questions and Selma's equally pawky answers, at least, so far. a) Sounds like Selmabai did not read the totality of what Cecil wrote, hence the snide tap dance.. b) What difference does it make to his moderation of Goanet posts whether Fred is a fine man, or not? As a Goanet member who has to deal with inexplicably rejected posts from time to time, I would prefer a flawed man or woman who is unbiased and empathetic and respectful towards posters over a fine man who is biased in favor of a political agenda, and has so little respect for posters that he is unable to explain why a post is being rejected and hides behind the meaningless term Inappropriate. c) I know for a fact, based on Fred's own admissions, that Fred is so far out on the political left wing that he is teetering on the brink and I am concerned that he may fall off the planet:-)) d) Why did Fred ostentatiously resign as a Goanet moderator, then sneak back in without any notice, until Herman listed him as a Goanet administrator? e) If Fred is objective and above board in his moderation of Goanet posts, all he needs to do is to sign his name at the bottom like Bosco does, so that we know where to aim the brickbats, or, better yet, quit hiding behind the demeaning and disrespectful word Inappropriate when rejecting a post, and briefly explain why the post is being rejected. Not only does this show respect for posters, without whom Goanet would be a cyber-cipher, but it gives the poster an opportunity to reconsider their post It also requires the moderator to be less subjective and biased, which is why some moderators may not like to comply with my oft-repeated request. Only Fred can sign his name on his rejection notices. Only Fred can explain precisely why he is rejecting a post in a way the poster can understand. If he refuses to either do these things or tell us why he will not, then we will know for sure where Fred really stands. Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 23:54:12 +0100 From: Eddie Fernandes [EMAIL PROTECTED] The discussion about GoaNet moderation has come as no surprise but the acrimony it has generated causes me concern. Mario asks: Eddie, Are you aware that what Cornel and I and some others have asked for is, a) that Goanet administration interpret what the topics will be more broadly to be Goan-centris as opposed to Goa-centric, because so many members do not live in Goa and may have some other interests from time to time. I believe the administrators do this fairly well. My popular seminars that correct misinformation and explain in simple terms how the US system of government works is a great example:-)) b) that the moderators explain in brief why they are rejecting a post, instead of insulting us with the term Inappropriate. A simple explanation not only shows respect for us as posters, but gives us a chance to re-consider

Dear Readers (especially Goans), Please tell me who the attached figure could be. The long forgotten one or rather 'guess who?' Ty. Joao.
[Goanet] KONKAN CURRY: Tusk Force and White Elephants
Tusk Force and White Elephants Haemophilia, like HIV, is transmitted by healthy 'carrier' males Miguel Braganza The Regional Framework Plan for Goa 2021 is a wonderful publication. It is classy to look at, well written, well edited, beautifully laid out and printed in true colour on glossy paper. The RFPG 2021 is a sight for sore eyes! The copy that I saw had one thing omission: the signature of the Chief Minister of Goa and ex-officio Chairman of the Task Force on RPG 2021. He also happens to be the Minister for Town Country Planning and Mines. It also had one illegal addition: the name of the award, Padma Vibhushan, as a prefix to the name of an architect as if it was a degree he earned. It is just as illicit and immoral as the Prof. prefixed to the name of a Devanagri Konkani activist who actually was a lecturer in Geology at a college funded by a mining company. The uninformed person will easily mistake the document of RFPG 2021 for a promotional book for tourists on Goa's rich and varied heritage, natural beauty, traditional occupations, lush rice fields alongside sustainable iron ore mining, the quaint estuarine travel by the Gasolin or Vapor and road travel by the Camiao combined with some modern day casinos and marinas and, of course, the Mopa airport! It is a fairy tale publication that would put Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code to shame. On page 5 it states quite glibly that The Ponte de Linhares connecting Panaji to Ribandar will be preserved for posterity. In actual fact, the Ponte de Linhares or Patto Bridge connects two sides of Panaji over the Ourem creek, from the EDC Plaza near Sesa Ghor and Directorate of Tourism to Rua de Ourem between the PWD Div.I and Hotel Sona. So much for the scale of its accuracy. The mining industry may cry hoarse about the RFPG 2021 or DRP sounding the death knell for it in Goa, but you are unlikely to hear the other side of the story unless Ramesh Gawas [please do not kill his credibility by prefixing a Prof. to his name: he is a village school teacher, who has won the National Award this month for doing a wonderful job of teaching!] or 'naxalite' Sebastian Rodrigues tells you about it. A little of that has already appeared in print[GT 25 Sept. 2008, pg 2]. Everyone and his uncle knows there is a lot of money to be made from iron ore exports. Just how much the mining industry contributes to the Goa state exchequer by way of cess, levies and tax to be called the backbone of Goa's economy remains a mystery. That the mining industry provides support to spineless politicians from the bottom to the top does not make it Goa's backbone, or does it? There is one piece of good news in the RFPG 2021 for the mining industry that has gone unnoticed by the media so far: the Mission Bypass! Page 7 of the RFPG 2021 shows a map of the NH-4A splitting at Dharbandora-Sanguem with one arm going to Sanvordem and the other to Bicholim and Tivim. Read this with page 14 about the Growth hubs and the picture will get clearer. To this picture, add the information provided by the immediate past Editor of GT and current Vice President-Communications of a Group of companies involved in both the backbones of Goa's economy, mining and tourism. The road from Sirsaim-Tivim to Bicholim and onwards to the jetties at Vagus and Amona are used by trucks carrying iron ore from three mines at Advalpal and Pirna, at least one of them operated by an elusive mining BPO name after the Indian trinity, Trimurthi. More than rupees one crore has allegedly been paid to the villagers to buy their silence. Yet, persons like Shyamsunder Naik and others are shouting from the roff-tops. Only the blind and the deaf need to be told about Mission Bypass for Sanvordem. What everyone thought would be done under the March, 2008, amendments to Sections 16 and 16A of the TCP Act, 1974, has actually been cleared by the Task Force itself! Bravo. When the people speak in one voice, the Governments tremble. A shot of the Goan spirit later, the trembling stops. Down South, the issue is Mega projects which were beautifully re-defined by our Aam Admi Sarkar in the Goa Legislative Assembly last month as any project with an investment above rupees one thousand crores is a mega project. So, even the Government project like the Rs.500 crore Sports City in Goa Velha would be minor project. So what are the pig-rearing, sausage-making villagers actually doing in Dovonddem-Margao? Do they not know that Margao is a city? Can they not sell to the Madganvkars the vegetables grown in the hinterland as suggested by an architect who is a member of the Task Force on RPG 2021? Have they seen the 141 pages report plus annexure of the Agricultural Finance Corporation Ltd prepared for the Goa State Horticulture Corporation in June, 1995? The people of Goa must participate in development or be taken in custody as my friend's husband, Venancio, did some days ago in Sanguem and
[Goanet] Hey!..Whatsa gonna do during the Holidays?.. (Humor for Kuwait Goans)
:::Hey!..Whatsa gonna do during the Holidays?::: -by gasper crasto / Kuwait Eid Holidays..! Yes. The holidays are coming up. All your co-workers, friends and family have planned out something. Barbeque on the beach, hiking out in the desert, going for the latest movie, etc, or go somewhere out of the country.. a foreign tour! What about you..! Are you going to do the usual stuff of the weekend go shopping and clean the house? Or try out those disastrous new recipes that you invent? What is it this time? I asked my friend. My wife wants to spend the Holidays in Saudi Arabia. He replied rather sheepishly. Knowing my friend and his wife, orthodox Christians that they are by all faith, I was obviously at shock to hear that. My friend said he too was at a shock by his wife's decision. His wife is known to get the strangest ideas every holiday, like taking a course in jive dancing even though she is overweight. But going to Saudi of all the beautiful places on earth. His initial reaction was to scoff at his wife but we all know that wives get what they want, finally. Now, he was quite into the idea of going to Saudi and visit Mecca and Medina. Hey, she wants to visit every Gulf country including Antarctica. He said sounding thrilled about it. But Antarctica is not in the Gulf The exciting news is that, he cut me short, in a few weeks I can cross Saudi off my list of places she wants to visit. And hopefully I will get a few cool souvenirs and pictures with me back home. C-o-o-l..??? I exclaimed, knowing my friends interest in using his digital lens everywhere he went. Cool.. You think so? It is my years saving! ... Then, don't you think you should spend more reasonably.. I said. That's it. I told my wife we are not going.., He said, You know what? Actually, I am NOT happy about all these things especially about her --taking all the decisions... Well, take out a pad and paper and write down the things that make you happiest. What made you happy all these years? Was it playing football, watching cricket, visiting places? Photography? Movies? Whatever it is, no matter how silly, write it down. I said. I think I love toy race cars and puzzle books. He replied. I was slowly starting to get mad at his unrealistic, funky answers. So, buy those toy cars and puzzle books and when you get home, play with them. I said bluntly. Write a script and buy some puppets as well to act for you! Or take pictures of the lights and decorations outside all the apartments in your building, and develop your own rating scale and send your neighbors emails letting them know who got best deco for color/lights, etc. Learn to make your own fun. Keep yourself busy! And excited! Have a good time.. Bye.. As I was about to hang-up, I heard him chuckling sarcastically at the other end. His laughter left me intrigued. Have a wonderful holiday meal with your wife..Bye.. I said, don't settle for a panv-bhaji or omlette if you want to have those Goan pork sausages for breakfast all the days of the holidays... Hey buddy, Listen. We do so much for others throughout the year, you need to take care of the most important person in your world, that's you silly! Do something for yourself and agree that you won't let yourself feel bad about it. You deserve to feel good about what you do. Play holiday music, take off your pants and dance around the living room. Run to the kitchen, dance there for a while and get back to the living room and dance again! I know it sounds silly! But sometimes it's good, you know. Put on a winter jacket and Christmas fathers hat, and go to town! Doesn't matter if it is summer or Eid. Who's going to see you anyway! Have fun! Just have a good time.. Is that going to make me happy? He seemed to have spoken to himself rather than me. Don't allow yourself even one sad thought, and when you find one coming, start singing at the top of your lungs... Wish I could sing all my favorite songs to some live music.. all to my hearts content.. .. Yes..thats one thing I wanted to do all my life.. Then dude, why don't you go where you and your wife can both get all the happiness and inspiration that you deserve and desire.. Where... The Nite ORoses at Crowne Plaza. This Thursday..2nd October 2008.. You may even get on stage and sing with Indias top band The Blackslade, and the other band it is just 2..S#arp to be missed.. .. and whats more --- your wife can jive all night long === :::BLACKSLADE TO BRING DOWN THE HOUSE::: Blackslade, the band made up entirely of Goans, but based in New Delhi happens to be one of the best bands in India. Blackslade arent your regular musicians who come on stage, stick to their cozy spots and belt out number after number. Rather, their electrifying shows charged with tons of energy will wake up the sleepiest of souls... What do you get if you get India's best drummer, the most
Re: [Goanet] Open letter to Goanet and other Goan related websites
Dear Mario, For reasons, I will elaborate on a little later, I wish not to get into this debate. Upfront, I want to clear something which I have neither said nor insinuated but like so many things get convoluted on Goanet. Nowhere have I said or implied that Cecil spams me with private mails. Infact, let me state clearly that he does not. Lots of mails get into my spam folder, Mario, including yours. How my email decides which mail goes into spam and which is worth reading, I do not know. All I can say, is it saves me the bother. Now, the reason I don't wish to get into this debate because, it has become the custom on Goanet, a sort of tradition in keeping with the lunar cycle, to lampoon someone or the other every time there is a full moon. This full-moon, the chosen sacrificial goat is of course Frederick Noronha. Maybe it's slim pickings out there. In keeping with this custom, a group of men who seem wordily-wise will gather and create a conspiracy so great and chiseled, even Ian Fleming would have been impressed. Before we know it, not only is the efficiency of the person called into question, based on his political leanings but his moral efficacy as well. Pretty soon, we shall hear that FN has hatched a plot in collusion with the Chinese to systematically stem out right-wing ideology from Goanet. I have no wish to join this lunar-festivity on Goanet. To FN, I can only say this too will pass. Soon, these men will tire of this game. I'm only sorry that your reputation will get dragged through the mud while they are at it. It is easy to forget the 14 years of hard-work you have dedicated to this site. It's also easy to forget that you are one person who is always there to help someone out, should that person need your help. Not that I'm trying to canonizing you or anything, but there it is, for what it's worth. Take care, selma --- On Sun, 9/28/08, Mario Goveia [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't know about the rest of Goanetters but I would never take the word of a Cecil Pinto against that of fine man like Frederick Noronha
[Goanet] Miguel Braganza: How NOT to moderate Netgroups: A Goanet Guide.
-- Forwarded message -- From: Miguel Braganza [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 2008/9/29 Subject: How NOT to moderate Netgroups: A Goanet Guide. Dears, Every man and woman has his or her prejudices. When one accepts the role of a Moderator one makes a commitment to keep one's prejudice to oneself and to be FAIR to even those with whose views one violently disagrees. In technical groups one is very strict about the On Topic nature of posting. A person on Botanical Society of Goa list is not likely to be interested in how to repair a spray-gun or assemble a AK-47. However, he or she may be interested in vermiculture, EM, marketing of fruits or preservation of seeds, though these are NOT botanical subjects. Unless the subscribers complain, there is no need to be excessively careful about posts that do not strictly conform to the moderators concept of things permitted. Village groups cannot be treated like Technical groups. the best example of good moderation [minimalist] is the Vascokars United, a vibrant netgroup that has acheived action on the ground ...right from Those Were The Days music programme of yesteryears right in the first year of the VU. The Aldonanet is the next best thing I know. Two destitutes have homes, the pioneer of English education in North Goa has a statue and a lecture series and the Aldona Institute has better facilities thanks to this netgroup. It was also a platform to gain support for the Aldona Bachao Abhiyan [ABA] which has its own net group and website now. The Goanet allegedly has a large subscriber list but those who actually post on it are the usual suspects numbering less than fifty persons in any given month . except, may be , in the run up to the June, 2007, Goa Assembly elections that saw a dozen new posters posting furiously on Goanet. That has all but disappeared. Moderation is needed to avoid flare ups . it cannot be a permanent wet towel. It also must be seen to be even-handed, not dishing out meaningless technicalities. [Goanet] Report on attack on Christians in Frontline
Hi Marshall, On behalf of all fair- and open-minded; and information-seeking Goanetters, I thank you for keeping us informed of the sad situation in India regarding the recent attacks on Christians in several parts of the country. What is happening to Christians does not surprise me given the hate-web-mails against Christians that I have seen on the net. Many of these posts and webs have exploited and exaggerated the Inquisition in Goa and elsewhere and any and all deficiency of the Christians and the institution. Subtlety the extremists have been aided by so called intellectual Indians both Christians and Hindus. We have seen this benign support and excuses on Goanet. What has surprised and saddened me is the lack of open and vigorous condemnation of the anti-Christian actions by the otherwise moderate Hindus on Goanet. Perhaps their silence is a manifestation of their embarrassment. Very likely they are mortified by the acts of those who undertake these dastardly deeds in the name of their religion. Surely none of them are proud of what is going on in India. The reality is that these Indians should open their eyes. Any philosophy - religious or political - that seeks to divide people and uses past history as a cruch and tool of vengeance will soon turn on itself. As you rightly quoted the phrase of the uber-German to the evolution of the Nazis and their gradually increasing attacks on minorities. I congratulate you and other Christians in India who have raised your voices in protests at these atrocities. We are with you every step of the way. We feel your pain and sorrow and hope peace will come to our countrymen and India soon. [Goanet] IT IS A JUNGLE OUT THERE
IT IS A JUNGLE OUT THERE (A short, fictitious account based on a true Velim incident by jc. Any similarity to any person, occasion or incident on Goanet is coincidental) There are all kinds of anarchists and troubled animals (ATAs henceforth) hanging around. Some want to eat the GOOSE which has been providing the eggs for the community. Others want to just kill the GOLDEN GOOSE (chicken hereafter) for some inexplicable reason. There are some others who have a problem with the very farmers who have been faithfully tending to the farm for years and years. Apparently, they (the farmers) have had to consistently prevent the ATAs from disturbing peace on the farm. Most residents of the farm enjoy the peace, quiet and fellowship engendered by living on the farm. Occasionally, they would share stories about other farms and possibly some recipes and photographs. On other occasions there would be semi-heated discussions about the elections to the local egg development council or re: which eggs were tastier - white or brown. A review of the history suggests that the farm was the idea of a young bright spark. His idea was that a One or two chicken farm like this would attract the attention of other One or Two chicken farmers (and more important young 'farmereses') , Hey, Why Not. A meeting point for young farmers and 'farmereses'! Most excellent and Swt!. Life on the farm wasn't really the long term goal for the young bright spark farmers. They had other things to do. Some young farmers wanted to see the bright city lights and get all kinds of ABCDs after their names. They could not waste their precious time doing the mundane running of the farm for more than a few years. IT IS A LOT OF WORK, YOU KNOW! And so it is. But what happened to the others? Well! some farmers lost interest in farming per se and only returned to the farm to pay the occasional visit. Others found the 'farmereses' they were looking for and went about their married way. They now had more important stuff to deal with. A group of altruistic individuals who saw the benefit of chicken farming ...offered their assistance. They put in enormous amounts of their personal free time to work without pay. Their only goal was to help expand this One Chicken Farm into an Multinational Co-operative.. A strange situation occurred almost every single summer ever since this farm was set up about 14 years ago. Without fail, almost every summer (in the months of June July), the jungle became restive. The wild cats would attempt to gate crash and destroy this farm. But ...the farmers were quite aware of the dangers. They thwarted the designs of the wild cats. It must be the effect of Global Warming, or as one Rusty Pelican would call it ...Global Cooling. This summer (2008) started off relatively well. No trouble was forseen. Then, some other farmers decided to have a Mega-Mela in the Kanada town of Tornatapur. At least 3 anarchists (X,Y and Z) were spotted there. One on the inside, One who migrated from the inside, and one who gate crashed from the outside. Nobody really knows WHY the confusao started. But it appears that one (Mr. X) of the 3 anarchists did not like the wife of one of the mela-coordinating farmers. She possibly was wee bit too intelligent for him. 'Women, it is postulated, should be in the kitchen ...or at best ironing the shirts of the man'. That ...is their work during the daylight hours! Anyway, with the help of Mr Z, the confusao was started. Mr. Y was not at the Mela. He had predicted that the Mela would never happen. (he was of course wrong...Very wrong) He absented himself from the Mega-Mela (surely for family reasons) and found convenient refuge in the nearby village of Hattava. Unfortunately for him (Mr Y and possibly for Mr X) the Mela happened and was an organizational success. The confusao started by Mr. Z, therefore, was a matter of great delight to Mr. X and Y. Fast forward to a few weeks ago: The main farmers at the FARM made a few errors. We can accept that. We ALL make errors. We may not always accept that. ALL the other anarchists in the jungle are now jumping up and down. They want to rub the noses of the main VOLUNTARY farmers into the mud (at the very least) and possibly to destroy the FARM altogether. The Velim based Fee-Law-Zopher had this to say about this matter: Careful how you deal with any matter. THINK before you act. Every one makes mistakes. As far as this farm is concerned: Be very careful. IF the anarchists have their way, this farm will fold. Do you really want this to happen? We all know that change is the buzzword. But HEAR ME. Until you find experienced and dedicated farmers to look after this farm (FOR FREE). Careful. You may really get what you wish for. In short, I'd say this: Yesit is good to listen to the genuine problems of others ..and to make gradual adjustments as necessary. But BEWARE. When some anarchists start, some naive and some
[Goanet] Goanet moderation
Folks, I have 800 unopened emails in my inbox. I have not been able to follow this debate closely. What I do want to point out is that moderation is a thankless job. Having said this, some of the moderators here have spent YEARS of effort trying to make Goanet work. And they have mostly succeeded. The biggest complaint here is that posts are rejected without any reason. The second complain is that no one signs off on the rejection slip. These two complaints can be easily corrected. All the moderators need to do is to give posters the following courtesy: 1) At least two moderators should approve any rejected post. 2) They should included a one line explanation as to why the email was rejected. This are not hard tasks. If any moderator has insight as to why this is difficult, I would like to hear their view points. Like I said before, moderation is a thankless job. Perhaps there are issues here that the rest of the posters are not aware off. A little input from the moderators now would help in a big way. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Twenty-seventh Sunday of the Year
27-Sep-2008 Dear Friend, Whether we admit it or not we are 'gifted' people. We constantly receive gifts even though we do not acknowledge them or may not be even aware of the gift. We like to believe that we have earned what we have but the truth is: everything is a gift, and God is the giver of all gifts. Have we stopped to count our blessings and the many gifts we have received from God through so many people? Everyday is a present! Do we value the greatest gift we have received -our faith? Do we take it all for granted? Have a thanksgiving weekend acknowledging the giver! -Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: 27th Sunday of the Year 'Ingratitude- adding insult to injury!' 5-Oct-2008 Readings: Isaiah 5: 1-7; Philippians 4: 6-9; Matthew 21: 33-43; Composed during the early years of his ministry, the prophet Isaiah takes the role of a singer and takes for his theme the relationship between his friend and his vineyard. The friend does everything possible for the vineyard expecting it to produce plenty of fruit. After all his labour and care for the vineyard all that the vineyard produces is thorns and thistles and sour grapes. Nothing was left undone so that the vineyard would produce a rich harvest but alas the results are disappointing and the owner is frustrated. The owner is evidently Yahweh and the vineyard is the people of God, the Israelites. Israel has not responded to all that God has done for his people and so it will be rejected and God's care will be bestowed on the gentiles. What We Owe Others An American soldier, wounded on a battlefield in the Far East owes his life to a Japanese scientist Kitasato, who isolated the bacillus for tetanus. A Russian soldier saved by a blood transfusion is indebted to Landsteiner, an Austrian. A German is shielded from typhoid fever with the help of a Russian Metchinikoff. A Dutch marine in the East Indies is protected from malaria because of the experiments of an Italian, Grassi; while a British aviator in North Africa escapes death from surgical infection because of a Frenchman, Pasteur, and a German Koch who elaborated new techniques. In peace as in war, we are beneficiaries of knowledge contributed by every nation of the world. Our children are guarded from diphtheria by what a Japanese and a German did; they are protected from small pox by the work of an Englishman; they are saved from rabies because of a Frenchman; they are cured from pellagra through the research of an Austrian. From birth to death we are surrounded by invisible hosts -the spirit of people who never thought in terms of flags or boundary lines, and who never served a lesser loyalty than the welfare of mankind. God has done and is doing so much for us through his people. Are we grateful or take it all for granted? Raymond R. Fosdick in '1000 Inspiring Stories'' Paul in today's reading asks the Philippians not to give way to anxiety and worry but rather live in joy and peace with one another. He warns his readers that if they continuously worry joy will go out of their lives and their peace of mind will be disturbed. If they have needs that are making them anxious they should make them known to God through prayer and he will take care of their needs. Thus the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard their minds and hearts. These reassuring words come from Paul, who was in prison and who was not sure whether he would be sentenced to death. He had every reason to worry but he preferred to trust in the Lord. His example is worth following. Live In The Present Four men were playing cards. They discussed what each one would do if news suddenly came that the world was about to end and everyone was going to die. One said, I would go home and have a last look at a beautiful picture I have always admired. Another said, I would go and have fun, commit all the sins I could while there was still time. The third more sensibly said, I would make a fervent act of sorrow for all my sins. The fourth man remarked, I shall continue to play cards. -We must learn to live in the present, never to play the past records, not to worry about the unborn future. Be ready to face death any moment of our life. G. Francis Xavier in 'The World's best Inspiring Stories! In today's gospel Jesus tells a parable of wicked tenants and a good landlord. The parable is an allegory of God's dealings with his people. The landowner is God. The vineyard is Israel. The wicked tenants are the people of Israel, but more especially the religious leaders who had been given charge of the vineyard by God. The servants are the prophets sent by God and so often rejected and killed. The son is Jesus himself whom they killed. The parable was mainly directed to the chief priests and elders as a warning but they did not heed the warning. In the parable the tenants came to a terrible end. Israel too did not heed God's warning and so they were
