[Goanet] Singing the Ladainha
Great narrative by Tony Fernandes on the Laidanha. In my village at least, the description in this day and age, fits to a T. I never miss a Laidanha, and join the singing with gusto, and look forward to the boiled Chonne or chick peas, and a quick peg of Uraak. I celebrated the Laidanha for the safe arrival and the safe trip back, of my daughter and her family a few years ago. My American son in law was so impressed and taken in by the piety of the people. This is one tradition that continues in my village in Goa, at various locations including the Kollemche Khuris where one has to trudge through the jungle to get to a lone cross, at the Bharazannache Konnir Khuris on the Socorro Plateau, and at the Bhurgheanche Khuris. Viva Goa and its traditions.
[Goanet] Goan picnic songs? Goan?!!!
My friend Eddie Verdes forwarded me a mail he had received. With his permission I am posting the request here with the name and address of the (female) sender edited out. - Subject: goan picnic songs Hi Eddie, This is Xxoxoxox from Bombay. Was just browsing the webstie and got yr email address. Do you have the lyrics of the goan picinic songs like: Amaku malum, tumku malum, kisku malum hai - Bambai Meri Hai - Bimbo, Bimbo whatcha gonna do-e-o - Daisy Daisy - Down by the Riverside - Evening in Gay Maharastra - Guantanamera - Hello Dolly - In the Army - Irani Serenade - John Brown's baby - Malaiaka - My Bonnie lies over the ocean - O my darling Clementine - Oh You Can't go to Heaven - Pontius Pilate King of the Jews - Ramona - Shame and Scandal in the Family - Sleepy Joe - There's a Hole in the Bucket - Una Paloma Blanca - Under the Mango Tree If yes, pls email it to me. Tks --- I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Either Eddie is pulling my leg or this woman is set up by someone to bait us all. How come there's not a single Konkani song in this bunch. How come there's nothing remotely Goan about the list either? This looks like a collection of songs East Indians or Anglo Indians would sing at a picnic. We do sing English songs at Goan picnics but they are of a different variety. In fact it makes as much sense as having the African Anthem 'Malaika' included in a compilation book of Konkani songs. I am not a purist in these matters but let's draw a distinction betwen what is Goan and what is specific to other states/countries. If a miniscule section of Goan migrant population has absorbed the culture of a different state/country into their own let's have specific labelling. Eg: Shirly Village Bandra Goan Picnic Songs or East Africa Goan Party Songs, but please don't call them Goan songs or Konkani songs. More about Goan Picnic Songs archived at: http://www.mail-archive.com/goa...@goanet.org/msg04094.html http://www.mail-archive.com/goa...@goanet.org/msg25770.html Cheers! Cecil ==
Re: [Goanet] An Amazing Re-incarnation story
Selma, Ian Stevenson at University of Virginia devoted his life to studying such cases, and came up empty handed as far as proving the authenticity of the claims is concerned. His student Satwant Pasricha continues to investigate these anecdotes at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore, where I worked for some time. From what I remember, almost all of their cases can be explained by mundane factors, such as stories told by visitors and playmates. It is virtually impossible to rule out such contamination in general. I wonder, and maybe Santosh specifically could shed some light here, because I more often than not tend to be skeptical about these things, has there ever been a scientific explanation put forward for past life recollections that add up. [Goanet] 'PODER' - The baker
‘PODER’ – The baker The word ‘poder’ is derived from Portuguese word ‘padeiro’. A shop selling baker’s products is known as ‘paderia’ (bakery). There were no alarm clocks during our childhood - we woke up when the dawn broke at cuckoo’s persistent whistled ‘kwer-kwah’ call or at crows’ cawing; if we continued to sleep, we were awakened by the sound of “poderacho danddo” (around 5-foot high, thick piece of bamboo) fixed with flat metal rings at nodes, which produced chiming sound when hit on the ground. Every morning, the “poder” (he was also known as “mest”) dutifully carried a “panttem” (large bamboo-woven basket) on his head and a poderacho danddo in his right hand, and visited each house/family barefoot. He also made a second round in the afternoon. He sold the crispy, aromatic, traditional leavened, “khornan bazlolo” (oven-baked) Goan “pão” (bread), “katreancho pão” (bread with four corners) – [do you remember “katreanche vistid” (girls’ dresses with a side/back cut?], kunddeachi poyi (bran bread) and children’s most favorite “kankonn” (the bangle). At home, he sold “bottamchi biskut/bottam” (finger biscuits/fingers), “sadi fati” (plain toast), “godd fati” (sweet toast), etc. He stored biscuits and toasts in large “dobe” (tins) which had covers. When the poder arrived with morning supplies, we would take delivery, hold bread in one hand and place kanknnam (bangles) in our arms and walk back in the house. The best way to enjoy a crispy kankonn was to dip it in black tea and savor it. Wow! The very mention of that toddy smelling pão and kankonn makes me feel hungry! They also made ‘panke’ (pancakes) the kind of which are not made now. For most people, the humble, smiling poder was the first person to exchange morning greetings “Dev boro dis dinv” (Good morning); he would thus make everyone’s day! Just out of context, there were some people in each ward whom their neighbors and even relatives avoided, as a look on their face would ruin the day! The poder never failed to arrive – he always made door-to-door deliveries be it during cold winter mornings, torrential rains, scorching heat or cyclonic winds. His forte: He was always ready to give on credit. He maintained a small book on which he recorded customer’s name and the amount due from him/her. We, too, kept a record of the days missed on the ‘Almanak’ calendar and deducted the amount at the end of the month. The poder wore a cream color “kabai” (cloak), which reached up to his knees. It looked like the white part of an opmus It was made from flour bag cloth, which was of very good quality; he wore a kashtti underneath. By the mid of the last century, he began to wear a khaki short pant over his kashtti. He continued to wear the kabai but its size diminished, which was gradually replaced by loose top garment. At home, he roamed freely with only a kashtti. He placed the singlet (vest) over his shoulder and put it on when people visited him/his family. He always wore loose clothes. Maybe that’s why whenever boys/men wore loose clothes, people remarked: “Poder koso dista” (Looks like a poder)! In the winter, he wrapped a muffler around his head and protected his ears and nose from cold breeze. During raining season, he wore a half “kapot” (raincoat) with head cover and plastic shorts. He always carried the danddo – that was his trademark! Once he supplied the required pão to a family, he closed the top of panttem with a plastic cloth. It was held tight around the basket with the help of an old bicycle tube. He mostly placed his panttem on a goddgo (compound wall made of rubbles) and made use of his danddo to balance the basket. He sometimes asked the person buying bread to help him place the basket load back on his head. Once through a customer, he proceeded to the next house/family by hitting the danddo continually on the ground, as if walking with a hand stick, which was an alarm to the next door neighbor that he was on his way to his house! The Fifties and the early part of the Sixties were the era of the bicycle. The poder was tired of walking; so, he grabbed the opportunity and bought a bicycle for himself. He fixed a large carrier on the hind of the bicycle and fixed the panttem to it. He was fortunate then because he could still reach each house on his bicycle through “paimvatt ani bidi” (foothpath and path with goddgo on either side), as most compound walls separating properties came into existence from the Seventies onwards. To my knowledge, there were three bakeries in Anjuna in the Fifties – one in Kumbarvaddo (now known as St. Sebastian ward) and two in Mazalvaddo. The bakery in Kumbarvaddo was located on the right side on way to Mapusa, two houses before the turn to proceed to Doxixira choddav (up-slope); it continues to be in the same place. It was run by one Antonio Mest. Manuel Antão,

[Goanet] Can Obama-isation save the US or the world ?
The world's ecosystems are in a state of terminal decline. We need leaders who will tell it like it is and urge people to Reduce, Re-use Recycle. Humankind's survival is at question here. Should near term growth be damned ? The choices are all unpalatable. A-Continue the US model to push consumption and growth using conventional energy and chemical technology and we destroy the planet by CO2 warming and toxic rivers and oceans. OR B-Rapidly attack the source of climate change-CO2 emissions using all possible resources, simultaneously reduce the damage to the world's ecosystems by eliminating polluting industry, while all the time ensuring that the basic necessity FOOD is evenly distributed to prevent rioting and the collapse of civil society. Re-organising global industry and commerce with near term job loss and re-training is inevitable. The old order must change and yield place to the new. Maybe we can go down path B if all the best minds from MIT quit the banking system which they ruined by financial engineering and focus their high IQ on re-engineering human society ?
[Goanet] Anger grows in India over US visa rules
Throughout the US presidential campaign I kept wondering why so many Indians were getting so irrationally excited over a possible US president who is indebted to the big labor unions which means protectionist policies to reward them which means bad news for countries like India that supply the US with goods and services. His opponent supported free trade which benefits countries like India. In the meantime, many ignorant Indians kept demeaning President Bush, the most pro-Indian US president in recent history, who faced down the rest of the world to get India a unique nuclear agreement and has provided billions of aid to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria in poor countries. Now we see the chickens coming home to roost: http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/feb2009/gb20090224_563564.htm?campaign_id=rss_daily Excerpt: Each year, the American government hands out 65,000 H-1B visas, and Indian engineers receive many of them. However, as part of President Obama's economic stimulus package, Congress passed provisions to bar any U.S. company that receives bailout dollars from directly hiring workers on these H-1B visas. In India, there has been a swift outcry. This is just irrational protectionism, says Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of India's Planning Commission. It makes no economic sense at all. [end of excerpts] Mario comments: Of course it makes no sense, Mr. Ahluwalia, just as most of Mr. Obama's economic stimulus plan makes no sense. Besides, India and free trade that benefits most Americans by keeping inflation low, don't stand a chance against his labor union supporters, who are part of his vote bank politics.

Mr. Premanand Lotlikar recalled Dr. Mathew Almeida's yeoman service to the cause of Konkani and said that his books Description of Konkani and Konkani course in Roman Script were his major contribution to those who wanted to know Konkani language. Fr. Vasco do Rego SJ made a fervent plea for working unitedly for the development of Konkani. Tiatr Academy of Goa President and Former Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly stated that the vacuum and void created by the death of Fr. Mathew would be difficult to fill. He recalled with pride that though Fr. Mathew ALmeida had a Ph. D in Linguistics from a foreign university, he always spoke in Konkani when speaking to anyone who understood Konkani. He called on Goans to proudly speak in Konkani as a tribute to Fr. Mathew. Mr. N. Shivdas, the President of the Goa Konkani Akademi said that he rushed to TSKK as soon as he heard of Fr. Mathew's passing away. As in life, he was surrounded by a few persons while he was in his coffin at TSKK. Fr.. Mathew was reclusive in life and loved his solitude even at functions Fr. Pratap Naik SJ said that Fr. Mathew was soft spoken buut had strong views. these views are reflected best in the Diaries he kept each year since 1966. He read a few of these entries: Fr. Matthew’s personal diary entries from 16th July 1966 to 17 August 2008 are found in TSKK. Pratap Naik, sj read out the following Texts from Fr. Matthew Almeida’s Diaries. 5.2.87 Thursday: Yesterday the big news was that the most controversial bill was passed last night. Konkani is official language of Goa and Marathi and Gujarati are also given equal status for all practical purposes. Now let us see what they are going to do with it. Naturally both KPA and the Maharashtrawadis are not quite happy with it. 3rd Sept.88 Sat: …Later in the evening Avadhut Pai of Sunaparant came to enquire about the circulation. He stayed on to talk about Konkani topics. The impression created by some of these Nagari writers is that Konkani literature begins with Shenoi Gõybab. I told him that Dalgado is the first to write in Nagari. These blighters talk as if Christians and missionaries don’t count. The same chaps made use of Christians in the first twenty five years to serve their purpose, now they have no use for them. Finally our chaps are waking to reality. 24 June ’05 Fri: Pratap has left by evening train to Bombay. He expects to conduct even workshops on roman script (RS) for Konkani. Up to now it looks as if RS is the only solution. Both the Kannada and Devanagari scrs (scripts) are losing ground. Let us see. This has been my contention. Where is the readership for Devanagari? Kannada has readership but it may not last more than a decade or two. 29 Sept ’07 Sat: At 10.00 there was a small book release function for my Romi Lipient Konknni Kors. Tomazinho presided and recommended the book to Konknni writers and lovers. Quite a good response. This is the first book that sold so many copies on the first day of release among our publications. Fr. Matthew Almeida, S.J. a veteran Konknni Researcher, writer and co-founder of Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr in 1983 died on 18 February 2009, in JMJ Hospital at Alto Porvorim, Goa after a brief illness.

Author: PNS Publication: The Pioneer Date: February 23, 2009 URL: http://www.dailypioneer.com/158243/Catholic-Church-determined-to-oppose-law- reforms.html Close on the heels of the objections raised by certain Muslim sects to some of the proposals of the Law Reforms Commission headed by retired Justice VR Krishna Iyer, the Catholic Church of the State has protested to some other suggestions of it indirectly warning the Left that any move to implement these proposals would have serious consequences as far as the coming Lok Sabha election is concerned. If the Muslims' objections were to proposals like better controls on polygamy, the Church is opposing the suggestions to put controls on couples' right to beget children, permit mercy killing (euthanasia) and to constitute trusts for managing church funds. The commission had submitted its proposals to the Law Ministry last month. Mar Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil, Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church, stated categorically that the commission's proposals were not acceptable to them. Inaugurating a seminar on the subject, Cardinal Vithayathil said that constitution of legislations harming the public good and freedom of society and individual was not appropriate as far as democracy was concerned. Reminding the Government that 99 per cent of Indians were believers, the Cardinal said any law, whether it be of the Government or the Church itself, should not be against the natural law of God, public good and common morality. He said the Catholic Church was opposing euthanasia, suicide and feticide because it considers life as invaluable. There was no justification for the proposal for constitution of new legislation for forming trusts when there were clear provisions in the Canon Law with regard to the management of the church's property and wealth. Just like any other organization, the Church also is submitting all the details of income and expenditure to the Government. In that situation, we can't understand the meaning of the Government's move to constitute trusts for the church, Cardinal Vithayathil said. One of these proposals is not to permit more children than two per couple. The report clearly said that Governmental concessions need not be given to children born after the first two kids of the same couples. More than that there a fine should be levied from the couples for every child they begot after two children. This recommendation had come at a time when the Catholic Church in the State was searching for ways to encourage couples in the community to beget as many children as they could in a bid to prop up the falling Christian population growth. The church had even floated a new movement, Pro-Life, to encourage couples to beget as many children as possible in the context of the falling population growth rate among the believers. Bishop Mar Kallarangatt, who spoke in the seminar, said certain programmes the LDF Government was initiating in the garb of people's welfare were in fact shocking. He said the law committee's reforms submitted to the Government were immoral, violence-prone, harming individual freedom and promoting rejection of values. Infuriating some Muslim sects and religious scholars, the law commission had suggested that there was no need to permit polygamy. However, in special cases like lack of children in the relationship and non-curable disease of the wife, permitting another marriage for the husband could be considered. But for this, the husband must get the consent of the wife, the report said. Muslim leaders like Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliar of the Sunni sect had reacted sharply to the proposals saying they would not allow their implementation as they were against the principles of Qur'an. Observers are of the feeling that the Government is unlikely to implement any of these proposals lest it would prove harmful to the LDF in the coming election.
[Goanet] How regulation caused the financial crisis / looking forward
Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 05:38:29 -0800 (PST) From: Gilbert Lawrence gilbert2...@yahoo.com To Mervyn: I like your comment, The cause ... is quite simple: Financial regulations that were in place were either removed or not adhered to. This after just reading and reading that it was too much regulations that caused the debacle, put forward by a Rush Limbaugh talk-alike called Thomas Sowell. Mario responds: Here we see Gilbert, a physician, continue his barrage of jejune personal insults against Prof. Tom Sowell, an eminent economist and expert in financial markets, who is a Fellow at the prestigious Hoover Institute at Stanford University. See, http://www.hoover.org/bios/sowell.html I have already shown in http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-February/174166.html, how Gilbert misrepresented the term dittoheads. The assertion that Prof. Sowell, a respected academic, talks like Mr. Limbaugh, a media commentator and talk show host, is equally specious and backwards. It is Mr. Limbaugh who frequently cites the research based opinions of Prof. Sowell. At Gilbert's request in http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-February/174177.html, and to further his education, I have shown below some additional sources of information from credible sources. Gilbert apparently has no idea that there are other financial industry experts who agree with Prof. Sowell's analysis of how the Community Reinvestment Act [CRA], an ultra-liberal piece of legislation passed in the Carter administration, which had good intentions of encouraging home-ownership by low income people, was escalated under the Clinton administration with overt and covert threats by the Justice Department, HUD, Democrat party politicians and community action groups against banks if they were slow to comply with its provisions. Most political liberals and Democrats, and a few Republicans, defended and protected the growing house of cards because it helped low income people, which is what socialism does until it implodes from its fundamental economic flaws. Shown below is an editorial from the respected Investors Business Daily: http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=312766781716725 Excerpts: The Community Reinvestment Act is to blame for the financial crisis, but it so powerfully serves Democrats' interests that they'll do anything to protect it — including revising history. The CRA coerces banks into making loans based on political correctness, and little else, to people who can't afford them. Enforced like never before by the Clinton administration, the regulation destroyed credit standards across the mortgage industry, created the subprime market, and caused the housing bubble that has now burst and left us with the worst housing and banking crises since the Great Depression. [Goanet] An Amazing Re-incarnation story - Carvalho
It features a British boy who is convinced he had a previous life on an island called Barra. I've pasted a link for those who want to read up on this boy. selma Selma,Ian Stevenson at University of Virginia devoted his life to studying such cases, and came up empty handed as far as proving the authenticity of the claims is concerned. His student Satwant Pasricha continues to investigate these anecdotes at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore, where I worked for some time. From what I remember, almost all of their cases can be explained by mundane factors, such as stories told by visitors and playmates. It is virtually impossible to rule out such contamination in general.Cheers,Santosh. Hi Selma, Let me put you out of your misery. The Barra boy story is true and Reincarnation is also true, I found no holes in it. As the program said, as we grow up we lose our child memory, secondly they took too long to follow up, they had no money, most of all - WHY! It so happens that as children grow up we loose some of the natures survival instincts/gifts that we acquire from nature. For example psychology (which was discovered long ago by the Greeks but only applied as a science till modern times), children are born with it. As we grow up we lose 'that special gift', dogs and children also have 'that special kind of gift', which they cannot convey because they cannot speak. Be as it may! 19 years ago (long before copy and paste) they showed on TV, made by an European Channel, Sweden/Denmark not sure, and repeated several times on Sky that year. An Indian boy born to a poor, I mean very poor slum dwelling woman in an UP village. That woman said he always said to me, 'you are NOT my mum, why do you have only one saree, my mum had 100s because I bought them for her, had a car, and a shop. She said to him 'I am your mum' etc etc - This whole story goes on and on for one hour. - To cut it short. He told her where the shop is, the location of the shop, the tree in front of the shop, the safe inside the shop where he kept his money etc etc. He told that his wife helped him in the shop, he has two sons, he told them their names too. He told them how the shop counter was positioned (which his wife then changed so as not to remind her of her dead husband). When the boy was taken to that place which was totally in a different area to where he was born, that boy or any one would not have known because it was/is insignificant. The tree, the safe, the counter, the positioning of the radios and the TVs etc was confirmed by his wife. The boy told his wife on cmaera, 'you have changed it all'. The wife when told, 'I am your husband', she told him on camera, how can I call you my husband when you are younger than my sons. When he told her what he called, she burst into tears and did not want to be in front of the camera any more. The program than moves on to how he died, again, no where near where he was born again, and no way any one would have told the boy. How did he die? he was shot. When was he shot? on a rainy night in front of his house when in his CAR, returning home. Where was he shot? On the top of the head. All confirmed by the boy his wife and the villagers. Because it was a heavy rainy day there was too much thunder and lightening etc Why? Money! Black money or whatever. He says he will not tell where he has hidden it, because it is his. Now! WHEN THEY SHAVED HIS HEAD ON CAMERA - THERE WAS A BIG SCAR WHERE HE SAID HE WAS SHOT. His biological mother said he was born like that, the doctors said with that sort of wound on the head, that place and as a child, he should be dead. All this on European TV. (professors are 'deliberately' looking in the wrong place because they are making a 'living' out of it, longer the search longer the pay packet). ED.

Re: [Goanet] Jai Ho Rehman
Dear Goanetters, I would like to share an email response from Madhav Chari to my post of Jai Ho Rehman. Madhav, Thanks for continuing to engage and point towards meaningful analogies. You succeeded in writing what we often talk about. My hope has often been that people will be able to leverage though laterally. So looking at calligraphy and say swordsmanship, music and management as you do so well in your seminars. Hope to see you soon. venantius +++ VJP, please see my comment on this and add this post to Goanet if you see fit. Dear Everyone, and music afficionados of all persuasions, First and foremost when people talk about actors like Shah Rukh or Rahman, as it is portrayed in the media, it is never about the quality of the acting or the music, it simply is a comment on the film or music industry. The Oscars are about the film industry, and no matter what anyone says, there are films that do not see the light of the Oscars that have good quality, and there are films that may happen to win awards that may have good quality. When Jagjit Singh goes on public record saying that Rahman does not know anything about ghazals, he is right. Sometimes though I feel that when this type of comment enters the public media I see it as a derogatory comment and it can come from some sort of jealousy: and in the end it is not counter productive. One fact you have to remember about film musicians, and I have interacted extensively with Loy Mendonca: film music in a sense does not require you to deliver musicianship in real time. That means as a live musician on the stage you have to deliver: no edits, no cut and paste jobs on the computer, and if you make a mistake you cannot go back and fix it. This is like live drama. Performing live takes a lot more effort than doing studio work in Mumbai no matter what these musicians may tell you. Take away their access to technology, give them a simple guitar or piano and see if they can deliver a live performance for 90 minutes without losing the audience: they will fail. In fact, many musicians have told me that their abilities as live musicians have dwindled since they entered the studio zone for ad world jingles and film scoring because they stopped playing live music (except a few times a year). Playing live is like a muscle: you don't use it you lose it. What these film musicians excel at is production for the specific goal of a film: they can take snippets of some flamenco guitar player and weave it as a background for some playback singer, do some orchestral backdrop (by the way I have met Rahman's orchestrator), each done separately and do an nice edit job and voila, you have a product. The film composer in this case is someone who is able to manage this job well with different people contributing to different tasks. He has what we can say is the bigger vision. Also one interesting thing about Indian film scoring: the songs are recorded a lot of the time before the movie even begins shooting, so film composers do not even need (hypothetically) a detailed plot of the movie. They could in principle get moods from the director, some scenes from the director, number of songs, some cultural influences (say Rajasthan for example), and they go for it. The background score is done later when they watch the film, but when you buy the CD the main things are the catchy songs which have been composed beforehand. Rahman's orchestrator will be able to deliver work for the film, but he will not be able to compose a piece of one hour or 45 minutes that has integrity and complexity of structure of a modern classical master composer like Elliott Carter, and he does not even have the intellectual and musical skills to do that, and NOBODY in India nor Hollywood (including John Williams) is a composer at that level: but that is not at all necessary to function in the film world in India. Playback singers do not have to be at the voice training level of the best carnatic, dhrupad or Hindustani musicians, they are also not at the level of some of the Sufi musicians I saw from Rajasthan, and I suspect on a musical level (communicating a deep truth of music) they are not at the level of the mystical Baul singer from Bengal. Again deep spiritual truth of music is not what the film needs: it needs a singer to deliver the particular song in real time, and so long as it fulfills the needs of the film it is OK, time to move on to the next project. In my own experience, the detailed knowledge of many people working in the film world is pretty low, and they are also unable to extrapolate intelligently the capability of musicians or in other words the film composers do not necessarily have the ability to estimate the overall ability of musicians, but they will be able to make an assessment whether or not this particular musician can function for them within the context of the film score. That is expected because they are not musicians who perform live a lot of the time and have to carry an
Re: [Goanet] Global warming: A cause for concern
Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 23:10:06 -0800 (PST) From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com The U. S. National Academy of Sciences, one of the world's most prestigious scientific organizations has provided the following update on the science behind global warming: http://dels.nas.edu/dels/rpt_briefs/climate_change_2008_final.pdf It should clarify doubts and answer basic questions regarding this topic. Mario responds: Thanks for this link from one respected scientific organization which certainly lays out the case for the proposition that global warming is being caused by human activity. Where the doubts arise is when so many reputable and respected scientists disagree with the findings of this report and that of the UN's IPCC. One of the problems seems to be the overheated claims by some proponents that there is universal consensus and the matter is settled science, when clearly neither claim is accurate. The IPCC's claims that thousands of scientists participated in its report has also been challenged as false by scientists who were part of the process. Such claims raise doubts apart from the science which is complex enough. For example, From 1940 to 1980, when human industrial activity, and presumably CO2 levels, were experiencing tremendous growth, global temperatures did not rise, and even declined for a period of time. Remember, the controversy is not whether global warming is taking place, but whether it is being caused by natural phenomena or human activity, and whether reversing or curbing the human activity, specifically CO2 levels, is a) necessary, b) economically harmful to poor countries, and c) going to make any significant difference, even if it can be done at some reasonable cost. A concurrent discussion is whether any modest global warming in the future may be a net benefit to the world: http://www.newsweek.com/id/35543 The opposing view is illustrated by the following examples from the US Senate report I posted earlier. I have limited these examples in the interests of brevity, and only to make the point that the issue is still being furiously debated within the scientific community: http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.BlogsContentRecord_id=2674e64f-802a-23ad-490b-bd9faf4dcdb7Issue_id= For example [links to quotes are in above report] * Quote: This new 231-page U.S. Senate Minority Report -- updated from 2007’s groundbreaking report of over 400 scientists who voiced skepticism about the so-called global warming “consensus” -- features the skeptical voices of over 650 prominent international scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC. * Quote: The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. * Quote: Russian scientists “rejected the very idea that carbon dioxide may be responsible for global warming”. * Quote: An American Physical Society editor conceded that a “considerable presence” of scientific skeptics exists. * Quote: An International team of scientists countered the UN IPCC, declaring: “Nature, Not Human Activity, Rules the Climate”. * Quote: ... a canvass of more than 51,000 Canadian scientists revealed 68% disagree that global warming science is “settled.” * Letter to UN Secretary General by a group of 13 scientists including three IPCC reviewers and one Nobel Prize winner: Quote: The UN Climate Change Panel must be called to account and cease its deceptive practices - Policies based on false science must be ended. We, an independent group of experts in various aspects of science and the environment, ask you to redress the lack of scientific integrity of the UN’s Climate Change Panel (IPCC) and to stop making reactionary and futile ‘Climate Change’ recommendations that hold back the developing world. As you read this, policies that you endorse are already causing misery and starvation for the world's poor. [end quote] * http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.BlogsContentRecord_id=865DBE39-802A-23AD-4949-EE9098538277 Quote: Climate Skeptics Reveal ‘Horror Stories’ of Scientific Suppression. Mario's Conclusion: The only point to be made here is that there are a significant number of scientists who are not yet convinced that the matter is settled and that the broad consensus being claimed by some, does not yet exist.

Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 22:51:10 -0800 (PST) From: ralph rau ralph...@yahoo.com The world's ecosystems are in a state of terminal decline. Mario responds: They are? Terminal decline?! I really haven't noticed. Ralph wrote: We need leaders who will tell it like it is Mario observes: Don't look to Obama - he has a poor record of telling it like it is as shown by the variance between what he says and what he does, most of the time. No one knows when to believe what he says and when not to. Ralph wrote: Continue the US model to push consumption and growth using conventional energy and chemical technology and we destroy the planet by CO2 warming and toxic rivers and oceans. Mario responds: If you were familiar with the US where I live, you would know that our conventional energy and chemical technology is subject to stringent controls over what goes into our air, rivers and oceans, unlike India and China. Most of our controls are based on health concerns. Ralph wrote: Rapidly attack the source of climate change - CO2 emissions using all possible resources, simultaneously reduce the damage to the world's ecosystems by eliminating polluting industry, while all the time ensuring that the basic necessity FOOD is evenly distributed to prevent rioting and the collapse of civil society. Re-organising global industry and commerce with near term job loss and re-training is inevitable. The old order must change and yield place to the new. Maybe we can go down path B if all the best minds from MIT quit the banking system which they ruined by financial engineering and focus their high IQ on re-engineering human society ? Mario responds: Regarding the best minds from MIT, does it make sense to you that people who could mismanage relatively simple financial systems could successfully manage far more complex issues of the kind you want them to do? Who is smart enough to decide which industries to preserve or eliminate? For example, industries that provide us with crude oil, gasoline and electricity pollute to some extent. Should we eliminate these? Who is smart enough to decide how to distribute food evenly and fairly. Who is smart enough to re-organize global industry? What exactly does this mean? Who is smart enough to decide how much near term job loss is OK? Would it be OK if you lost your job? Who is smart enough to decide what the new order should look like? Didn't India, China and the old Soviet Union already try all what you have suggested already, with supposedly smart people trying to decide which industries to preserve or eliminate, how to distribute food evenly, how to organize their industries, and how to make their countries heaven on earth? They all gave up their original systems where smart people decided what was good for everyone else, and now many decisions are made by millions of consumers and producers, who are often not as smart as MIT grads but far more clever in making decisions for themselves. In my following post you will see one succinct explanation of why no individual or group of individuals, whether they graduated from MIT or anywhere else, are smart enough to decide anything for everyone else. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-February/174163.html

[Goanet] Konknai _ English mix bhaji
Konkani - English mix bhaji Konknni English Mix Bhaji is being heard everywhere in and around Goa. The word 'Hello' is borrowed from English to Konknni to respond to every telephonic conversation. The other languages also use the greeting, 'Hello'. Nobody has an objection to the use of the word Hello. It has somewhat acquired a universal meaning. What you hear is amazing, 'Hallo, Konn uloita?' 'Hello Kiteak fon kelo re' vo “Hallo halloo, Kitem zalem.' Some words that are pronounced sound awful. 'Ponn! Ponn!' meaning there is a phone call. Next time you hear someone saying 'morebil 'be sure it is a mobile. It is a quality of the language to adapt to the new words and news sounds that keeps the language growing. Regional languages are left with no choice as words are being forced on them in the globalized economy. I have noticed many elderly people are getting used to operate a mobile phone. It is admiring quality that these people possess to learn the new gadget. Many grumble and say they cannot. They in a way get stuck. One of the quality get ourselves equipped as we grown in age is the power to learn new things or make new changes. When the older generation began using the words 'baba/ baby' no one had an objection. The parents loved it and the children seem to understand it better. Years ago this could be called the first serving of the Konknni English Mix Bhaji. The young and the old are displaying this amazing quality to adapt and adjust to a new language. The best part is that they are off the responsibility bar. They neither have fear nor shame. But the middle age person is filled with both. Anything mix put him/her in a fix. Lapitt
