[Goanet] Big voting lines
Just came back voting from Fatima High School polling booth. It took me one hour of waiting to vote. What intrigued me was that the woman's line was bigger than men's and most women were Muslims. The demographics of Goa seems to have changed significantly. Obviously, these people are here because their husbands' have jobs. While nothing can be done immediately about these, one has to get to the root of the problem as to why the demographics is changing significantly. Wonder what kind of jobs their husbands do, and why Goans keep going to the gulf. Also, met two boys. One from Manipur and another from Punjab. They were here for interviewing for a call center job in Goa. Goa obviously is creating a whole lot of low end jobs which are taken by non-Goans. samir

Re: [Goanet] Contribution of Valmiki, Digambar, Timblo to Goa
Dear Samir, This is positively my last in this thread ... that too, because I have to also thank you for the invite to the 'Bombay Cafe' batatawadas. First, a small correction in your (and your dad's) impression about me. Yes, I 'was' (not are now -- as you say below) in the business of buying and developing land into house-sites. From 1983. I made my few bucks there (if you're under the impression that I made a living from writing!) 99% of the plots I developed were sold to ethnic Goans, until I realised many purchasers re-sold them to all and sundry. I sure was party to despoiling agri/horticultural land for residential use. But as I always argued with my elders at home, I would rather develop and sell a one-acre paddy field in downtown Margao and buy several hectares in Quepem or Sanguem and develop a horticultural garden. I despoiled a bit of urban land around Margao ... but not even in a microscale to what's happening today. I always felt the same way as you did while passing by the verdant hills of Ponda ... when I drove through the interiors of Pernem, Bicholim and Sattari, or Sanguem and Canacona for that matter. I also agree with you that the situation in Goa today is close to what you say -- dire. More than all, I was very enthused with your practical ideas of how to stop Goans selling their votes in the context of Taleigao panchayat elections (in a signed article, in the 'Herald' I think?) We all know what the Taleigao results turned out to be. I think guys like you, who presumably have done well for themselves in life, need to resettle in Goa, and, other than eating batatawadas at Bombay Cafe, implement some of those splendid ideas. Who knows, they might work! Personally, all I can do is use my little writing ability to spread awareness among Goans through the print media, and other incidental ways that flow from that. (But don't call it Contributions to Goa as our friend, Dr. Jose Colaco, in his brand of typical humour, chose to!) I suffer from no such hallucinations! But, I cannot agree with your methodology in the current context. I have said before that Mathany is a good man, a rare politician in the Goa of today, who lives by his principles, and is given to virtues like loyalty. Mathany's otherwise praiseworthy record of loyalty is before us, but keeping the national perspective in mind, he did not get my vote because the leaders of the national party he'd naturally owe allegiance to if elected, will never get my vote. I honestly feel India would be safer in the hands of people like Dr. Manmohan Singh and PC Chidambaram. So, at my orderly (entirely voluntary -- the poor young cop with an ancient rifle was half-dozing) voting booth, near the Margao old market today, I went to vote just past 9.00 am. Since you disclosed your right to secret ballot, let me tell you what I did. I pressed the button at the lead (first in sequence) .. for one another friend privately described as Fishinha! Peace with your batatawadas at Bombay Cafe. But, no, thank you. Have other commitments. Today, the situation is dire (and I dont think you are stupid enough not to notice the caveat in my post and I repeat it here) Jesus said --- let him throw the first stone who has not created any sin. I would like to know the contribution of the following to Goa in the past few years. 1) Valmiki Faliero. 2) Digambar Kamat 3) Auduth Timblo. Jai Hind! samir With the brains that you have Valmikibab, you couldnt have not noticed the last few years that I mentioned re: contribution. To summarize, I feel the situation in Goa is dire. It is possible that Goans in Goa --- Timblo, Digu, you included --- cannot see it may be being caught up. We from outside who visit Goa often (I am here once in two months at least) can see it. If we are shouting, it is not to put down any of you -- it is for the concern of Goa. Let us join up --- each of us do have our own limitations I agree -- to save Goa. [Goanet] Jobs in Goa and jobs for Goans
The picture is very clear. Lots of non-Goans come to Goa for low-end jobs. (see my other post about long lines for voting). On the contrary look at this. Every year I get a lot of CVs of engineering students from Goa wanting jobs in Bangalore. Today too, I met a person on the bus, who, once he knew I was from the IT industry, asked me if I could get a job for his cousin who has finished computer engineering degree. Bottom line, while educated Goans dont get jobs in Goa, huge number of non-Goans come to Goa looking for low-end jobs. And it is unfortunate that our ministers not just dont do anything about this, but will go all out to please the non-Goans because they are much bigger in number and are a much stronger, and perhaps less demanding vote bank!!! regards, Samir

[Goanet] RELIGION AND SCIENCE
Dear All, I am sure that Mario Goveia does not know what he is talking about. I say to all Goanet readers who do believe in God or super power that. He (Mario) has nothing better to do all day. God means different things to different people - so, just shut up Mario! Science vs Humans is based on Evolution - Right? If that is so then, There are entities evolved beyond human kind. Dogs, Horses, Crows, do not see humans as Gods, do they? (well, I'm not going to ask them). But they do know there are beings that are superior to them, therefore they try to get away from us to save their life (or submit to us and become our pets). Similarly, Humans being animals (or is this speculation and conjecture as well) know that there are entities beyond our being (our existence is not the end of the chain of existence). Some call this superior existence - God, others just believe that there is a super power beyond our animal existence. One does not have to believe in Jesus as son of God to believe in God - we all are creatures of God. Even entities that are looking after us, are creatures of God. What I mean is - We are looked after entities - some call it God (all to their own). Regards, Mistri. - I congratulate Mario on a lucid exposition of his faith-based beliefs, as well as a clear understanding of an absolute separation between science and religion, and of the scope and limits of both. I would recommend this type of clarity of thought to everybody.Cheers,Santosh --- On Wed, 4/22/09, Mario Goveia wrote Once I have accepted certain core beliefs based on certain circumstantial evidence, the rest is based on faith, without any objective scientific proof in either history or science. Yes, if you want to know something for sure or within a certain rational probability. Otherwise it's all speculation and conjecture. I know at least three atheists who do a lot of good for poor people who do not believe in God or Jesus, as well as hundreds of non-Christians who do not believe that Jesus is the son of God. The Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule and the Sermon on the Mount make conventional common sense. They need no scientific proof.
[Goanet] KONKANI CINEMA _ A LONG WAY TO GO
KONKANI CINEMA: A LONG WAY TO GO ? Tomazinho Cardozo 24th April 1950 is a date to be remembered because 59 years back, on this day, the first ever full fledged Konkani film entitled MOGACHO ANVDDO was released at the Dasharata Cinema in Mapusa. Konkani language and culture for the first time entered the film world, thanks to the pioneering efforts of Mr. AL Jerry Braganza, a cinema enthusiast from Mapusa, Bardez, Goa. Mr. Braganza did not only produce the film but also acted the male lead role in the film. He is known as Father of Konkani Cinema but rarely remembered for his great contribution to the Konkani silver screen. The Goa Government or any other institution working in the field of Konkani never thought of remembering this great personality for all these years. It was only in 2005, after the completion of 55 long years, that Dalgado Konknni Akademi, for the first time, organized a function on 24th April to commemorate the screening of the first Konkani film MOGACHO ANVDDO and to pay homage to the memory of late Al Jerry Braganza. During the last 59 years about 40 full length films and over 150 video films were produced in Goa, Maharaxttra and Karnataka. Some of the important films are 'Mogacho Anvddo', 'Sukhachem Sopon', 'Amchem Noxib', 'Nirmonn', 'Mhoji Ghorkarn', 'Kortubancho Sonvsar', 'Jivit Amchem Oxem', 'Mog ani Moipas', 'Bhuierantlo Monis', 'Suzanne', 'Bhogsonne', etc. In the recent past 'Alisha', 'Sood', 'Padri' and 'Antarnad' have entertained the film lovers of Goa and elsewhere. Very few films have become commercially successful. It is because, although all Goans speak Konkani, very few of them make a point to see a Konkani film. I think it is high time that Goans patronize Konkani films so that they (films) become financially viable, otherwise a time may come when no producer will be willing to take the risk of making a Konkani film. Under these circumstances we will lose Konkani films forever and with it a powerful medium of preserving and promoting our culture. The Government of Goa organized the first ever Konkani Film Festival in 1997.This was the first step on the part of the Government to promote Konkani films. Most of the films that participated were Video Films because of the cost factor of production. From 1997 to 2005, in all three Konkani Film Festivals were organized and awards presented. The Goa Government also announced The Goa Scheme of Financial Assistance for Films. This scheme provides financial assistance for the production of feature films in Konkani and Marathi and non-feature films including tele-films, short films, and documentaries in Konkani, Marathi, English and Hindi. This scheme envisages grant of financial assistance upto 50% of the cost of production as per the provisions made in the scheme. This scheme which was formulated by the Department of Information Publicity has been now transferred to the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) which deals with all film-related activities in the state. The ESG is in the process of reviewing the said scheme in order to make it more attractive and more beneficial to the producers of Konkani films. The success of this scheme will depend on both, i.e. the Government as well as the producers. The budget provision made by the Government for this scheme is of utmost importance. The success of this scheme will depend on the financial support from the government. Secondly the success of this scheme is equally dependent on the producers. Their sincerity and dedication in making films of a high standard is the base of the success. Without being sincere and dedicated to the cause of the development of Konkani cinema, no success can be achieved at any point of time. The unity among the film producers of Goa is also of utmost importance. In a tiny state of Goa, having more than one Association of film producers, is a negative approach towards development of Goan film. Therefore, on this 'Konkani Cinema Day' let us resolve to work in unity in order to produce good quality Konkani films and contribute towards the preservation and promotion of Goan culture.
[Goanet] 53% VOTER TURNOUT REGISTERED - LOK SABHA ELECTIONS
Polling for the 15th Lok Sabha elections were peaceful. For the first time perhaps the Election Commission imposed several donts. Some were almost an irritant to the candidates and others deserved their baton. For example the defacing of public property the sloganeering the posters were absent even the polling tables did not have the party symbol/flag prominently displayed. When this writer toured the various polling booths there were hardly any workers seen around the polling booths. There were no paramilitary troops imported. Ofcourse most of the commercial shops and establishments were closed and this came as a blessing in disguise. The aam aadmi common man's cuppa chai too was missing. But the blessing was that these hot chat spots were visibly abandoned there was no gossip rumour mongering etc and therefore one had to vote and go back home and imbibe the spirit at home. There was another confusion, voting commenced at some booths at 0700 hrs and others at 0800 hrs. The mistake was because atleast the BJP voters apppeal showed the timing as 0800 hrs instead of 0700 hrs so one precious hour of voting was lost. Though climatic temperatures were surging there was less humidity so voting was by and large slow and steady. This time round the voters required to carry their EPIC or any of the government recognised phot identity as the electoral rolls for purpose of identification. The electoral rolls carried the photographs of most of the voters. Ironically as confirmed from the Election Office most of the voters in the Velhas Conquistas constituencies had to undergo a horrendous struggle to have their photographs on the electoral rolls . The % of such persons is around 25 to 28 %. Surprisingly in constituencies in the Novas Conquistas mainly in the gahat talukas etc having sizeable number of illiterate voters only 5 to 10% voters were yet to photograph. The Election Commission should institute an enquiry into the lapses of the agent selected for failure in photographing the voters. According to one official the officials in the respective talukas were ensuring to eliminate persons working abroad mainly in Gulf countries and hence the large number of persons from the Velhas Conquistas who had to go without photographs on the electoral rolls. Even on the last day despite a huge Q that was seen at the South Goa Collectorate the officials suddenly closed the photograph session and wound up operations on 20th April 2009. When this writer spoke to the Jt Chief Electoral Officer telephonically this evening he confirmed that the overall voting percentage was 53% with a break up of 56.5% in the Panaji Parliamentary Constituency and 50% in the Mormugao Parliamentary Constituency. Voting trends thus far reveals that the INC candidate will register a win in the South Goa Parliamentary Constituency while in the North the NCP/BJP will register a close contest as per the voting trends received at 20 hrs. Until a clear picture of voting pattern emerges from the drawing rooms of the BJP NCP for the North Goa a clear victor is yet to emerge. GODFREY J. I. GONSALVES, BORDA, MARGAO, 403 602, GOA. Date: Tue, 21 Apr 2009 22:51:50 -0700 (PDT) From: George Pinto georgejpi...@yahoo.com I am surprised Gilbert is advocating chicken soup. Is rooster soup less effective? Is he discriminating in favor of one gender over another? Is he a paid spokesperson for the Chicken soup lobby? The underrepresented Rooster Soup Association of Goa would like to know. Mario responds: George, The hens would tell you that the roosters have more important things to do than be made into chicken soup:-)) I strongly suspect Gilbert is a major stockholder in Cambell's Soup, which he hasn't denied. BTW, I have had chicken soup at least a couple of times a week for decades, but I still got cancer. When I was diagnosed, I drank only chicken soup for three days on the recommendation of someone from Gilbert's school of medicine, but the cancer would not go away, so I had to give up and go see a REAL doctor:-)) Next time I'll try homeopathy first, per the recommendation of that other Goanet physician named Padre Ivo:-)) George wrote: Most importantly, would he recommend chicken soup to a sick chicken? Mario opines: I think we need to ask Kevin this question:-))

[Goanet] Commemorating Environmental Days -By Clinton Vaz
This as well as all my previous articles are also available on my blog at: http://klintvaz.blogspot.com/2009/04/commemorating-environmental-days.html Commemorating Environmental Days It is important for everybody to participate in or show the community their support for Environmental Events. Supporting environmental events is also a great way to learn about a cause, or help improve public perception of the same. This week’s column seems to be sandwiched between a couple of internationally celebrated environmental days. While 22nd April was Earth Day, 28th April is ‘Save the Frogs Day’. So readers, how did you celebrate Earth Day? On Earth day, I woke up in the Wilderness, or Wildernest to be precise. Spending a day with the family, we made our way up North-East of Goa to the tri-border of Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Here in the deep forests of Keri, lies an eco-resort aptly named Wildernest. We all had a nice time unwinding in the midst of nature. The resort is nested in a deep section of the forest and some of the rooms have a great view of the valley below. There’s no aircon or television in the rooms at Wildernest, however, we didn’t miss it a bit. That’s because the team at Wildernest have elaborately planned out a string of nature related activities that is well spread throughout the day… Birdwatching sessions before breakfast, treks to make you trim and mehindi art sessions just after your afternoon siesta are just some of the activities listed. Somehow though hot as hell in most of Goa, at Wildernest, it was breezy, shady and cool, just how a typical forest ought to be. My brother actually thought it was too cold that night! During the day, they also organize treks to waterfalls, view points and more. Local cultural dances are performed by locals that live down in the village of Keri in the evenings. If you’re not game for it all, you could also laze in an armchair the afternoon breeze or swim in the infinity pool, a swimming pool with a view of a third of Goa! I swam there in the nights and could see lights in faraway Panjim and Vasco too! I appreciated the silence the most. It was nice to have absolutely no human noise around… it really clears and relaxes the mind. Meals are served in a common dining area that’s overlooking the horizons. Simple, yet delicious meals are prepared by the cooks using locally sourced ingredients, and guests are asked to serve themselves. It’s self-service here, and once meals are done, used plates and cutlery need to be placed into a wooden tray at the corner. Though this kind of concept might be quite alien to guests used to full service, I think it’s a good initiative for people to help clean up after they’ve drunk and eaten to their hearts content. Driving away from Wildernest, I could not help but notice the stark difference of getting back to civilization. Things got louder, brighter and dustier. Quite a stark difference to notice even though we were in the forests for just 24 hours! I’d recommend staying over at Wildernest for at least 2 or three days instead of a day. In my opinion, it was a nice way to celebrate earth day, in the midst of nature. These specially appointed days might seem unimportant at first, but they make us realize the importance of respecting Mother Nature. It's also a great time to learn about a particular cause while helping improve public perception of the same. In the next week, on Tuesday, the 28th of April is the ‘Save the Frogs’ day worldwide. There are lots of things that you can do to commemorate that day here in Goa .There are some that are writing in the papers, some like Roopa Bandekar and Nirmal Kulkarni who will organize related activities at their newly opened nature store called Earthworm in Porvorim. Ethel Da Costa has planned some programmes on Radio Mirchi and there’s an origami workshop planned in Panjim too. In the last few days, the WildGoa network is abuzz with ideas and suggestions for the 2 month campaign. Would you like to participate or get involved? Let us know and hop in! [Goanet] PM Manmohan Singh
Dr Manmohan Singh is dignified, gentle and courteous at all times. However there are occasions when pushed to the wall by unreasonable people, he can give back hard and mighty. This is the stuff our PM is made of. Here are some quotes of Dr Manmohan Singh: Advani likes to call me a weak prime minister. I cannot help pointing out that when held to the fire during the Kandahar hijacking, the BJP's *Iron Man melted*. I will certainly not say things in Pakistan that *offend every Indian and then abandon my stand* when it becomes politically inconvenient in my party. The BJP has not allowed Parliament to function... and now Advani wants to debate with me. *I don't want to give him the privilege* that he is an alternative prime minister. Mr Advani has the unique ability to combine *strength in speech with weakness in action*. I am not a sloganeer. I will readily concede that my opponents make more rousing speeches. [Goanet] ALERT: Sex rackets thriving in massage parlours in Goa.
Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help others be BETTER INFORMED --- --- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre (GDRC) Email: goad...@bsnl.in --- Sex rackets thriving in massage parlours Massage parlours have of late attained notoriety for being centres of sex rackets. Such massage parlours seem to go unchecked mainly due to the blessings from some influential persons and the cops. The fact that even the cops are hand in gloves with the perpetrators of the sex crime came to light when the deputy superintendent of police, Mr Sammy Tavares, and police inspector, Mr Manjunath Dessai, along with a team of Mapusa police raided a beauty parlour cum massage parlour in Morod. Here it was revealed that this racket was going on for a long time with senior police officials being 'aware' of it and still turning the other way. It was only at the behest of Mr Tavares and Mr Dessai and the assistance given by other police officials that the racket could be cracked. Sex rackets thriving under the guise of massage parlours is not a new thing. Such massage parlours are thriving in coastal villages.Last year locals from Anjuna had protested against the rising number of massage parlours and it was alleged that under the guise of these massage parlours, the flesh trade was flourishing. 'Yahaan sab kuch milta hai' was what the 'agents' of such massage parlours were going on telling the tourists who were landing in Anjuna. Realising the gravity of the situation, the locals proposed a resolution at last year's gram sabha that no more massage parlours should be permitted in Anjuna, as this was ruining the culture of Anjuna. These massage parlours are now seen 'legally' mushrooming in cities but carrying out 'illegal' trade inside their premises. In the first place it is very easy to obtain permission and licence for a massage parlour.Once a licence and permission is obtained for setting up a beauty parlour and massage parlour, the stage is set for the beginning of a sex racket. It may be recalled that just last week, the Mapusa police had nabbed two 'agents' who were taking a sex worker to a customer. Close on the heels of this, the Mapusa police managed to lay their hands on the beauty parlour and crack down on the sex trade that was going on there. The police not only held all those found there but even seized large amounts of cash and condoms. Surprisingly, it is learnt that the accused had even advertised for new girls to work in her parlour. Police claim that while each massage ranges from Rs 1000 upwards, the girls working there are brought from different places and paid Rs 5000 a month, besides they also receive 'tips' based on the customer's satisfaction. While the accused has provided a fictitious name and address to the police it has been learnt by the police in the course of interrogation that the family members of the accused were not aware of the situation. The licence for this beauty and massage parlour had also expired in March and it is surprising how this parlour continued to operate. -- The Navhind Times 23/4/09 page 02 -- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK --- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa --- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: goa...@bsnl.in -- __._,_.___

Re: [Goanet] ALERT: Sex rackets thriving in massage parlours in Goa.
2009/4/24 Goa Desc goad...@gmail.com: Sex rackets thriving in massage parlours Massage parlours have of late attained notoriety for being centres of sex rackets. Such massage parlours seem to go unchecked mainly due to the blessings from some influential persons and the cops. What about the blessings of the newspapers themselves? The Navhind Times was one of the publications that carried (and was doing so even a few days back), cheap but repeated classified ads for these massage parlours. And they were cautioned about this (even if in a strange, pranksterish way) in November 2007! See below: * * * http://penpricks.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-to-get-goan-editor-into-bed.html Friday, 16 November 2007 A NATIONAL PRESS DAY SPECIAL -- HOW TO GET A GOAN EDITOR INTO BED!!! FIRST, READ THESE CLASSIFIED ADS CAREFULLY... DON'T MISS ANY DETAIL... AND THEN, READ ON It is irritating to put this note right at the head of this post. We wish we could have just plunged headlong into the story instead. But we must make sure that you guys know the motive behind this small, but dishy story that we bring to you. There is no personal element involved here. We have only tried to do bring to the fore, the callousness with which newspapers treat their readers. We tell you how it takes only a Rs 60 classified ad (in vernacular newspapers) or a Rs 120 classified ad in English language newspapers to expose the moral and ethical bankruptcy in Goan newspapers. (in all we spent Rs 300 for the classified ads that were published in the three newspapers on November 16, 2007) What Penpricks has attempted to do in public interest, is pay these newspapers back in their own slimy, stinking coin. Our objective is to remind the editors of the responsibility they owe their readers. We are aware that this blog is a puny David in front of these mammoth newspapers of Goliathic proportions and hence we have followed this guerilla approach to lash out at their wrongs. We've jabbed their jaw, punched their chest, tied knots round their feet, but this story is a knee up their groin. Should serve them well to remember, that they should not take their readers for a ride. This is the story... here goes You must have seen several classified ads in Goan newspapers peddling 'massages' to clients. We had run a story on such obvious soliciting (through massage parlours of course) in The Hindustan Times some months back. We were not very pleased with this trend creeping its way in our own backyard and hence were looking out for a way to work a story around this, when one of us pricks in a rare spasm of brilliance, came up with this idea. This was the premise... a) Most 'massage parlour' ads solicit prostitution b) Newspapers in Goa have no compunctions against publishing such ads c) The editors are and should be held responsible for all the content published in their respective newspapers. There is no way they can shy away from this responsibility. This is how we went about planning the story. We picked three newspapers. We could have easily picked up more, but that would have meant more money... We worded these classified ad in such a way that there was no ambiguity about the fact, that the ad had less to do with massages and had everything to do with the flesh trade. Secondly, the ads we released clearly said that there were 'well built Arab/Asian boys and girls' to be had for massages and entertainment. It is shocking that the newspapers had absolutely no issue advertising BOYS and GIRLS or in other words minors, for the purpose of massage and 'entertainment'. Can you beat this guys? In other words, these chappie have absolutely no qualms being party to peddling minors for massage and entertainment purposes. And by entertainment, we clearly did not mean a Bharatnatyam or a Salsa performance. It could mean only one thing... You know what that is. Next comes the core of the brainwave, the prick came up with. In the classified ad, we put in the mobile numbers of the respective editors as contact numbers for people interested in the 'services' that the ad offered. If you read the three ads, you'll see the contact names as Aruna, Sandy and Robby and their corresponding cellular numbers. The ad which says Aruna was published in The Navhind Times. Aruna is scrambled for the newspaper's editor Arun Sinha and that's his mobile number up there. The ad which says Sandy was published in Gomantak, Marathi. Sandy stands for Gomantak editor Sanjay Dhavalikar and of course finally the ad which says Robby was published in the Herald. Robby is scrambled for our one and only Herald editor Robin Abreu. Sanjay and Robin's mobile numbers too accompany their respective ads. We are sure people interested in such 'services' have called these guys up using the phone numbers given. Till an hour or so the editors had already stopped picking up phones from unknown numbers. We know this would

LISETTE SALDANHA lisette_salda...@hotmail.com Hence we were totally blind-sided by both Eugene's gibberish on Goa-net where he claims he got his information from a GOA executive, and the resulting dialogue from well-meaning individuals who attended the GOA general meeting. As a final note, I would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Oscar Furtado, and wish him all the best. As life members of the Goan Overseas Association both Kevin and myself will continue to lend our support as we always have in the past. == Dear Lisette, You are probably the only GoaNet contributor who took Eugene Correia's nonsense seriously. Why he continues to write unverified stuff and who his alleged sources of mis-information are Correia himself knows. I know a couple of writers who rely on Mr John Walker for their information. But that ...on another day. I thought that the least he would have done is double check the John-Walker information with Kevin - before he hit the SEND button. But then, only trained and ethical journalists would do that. BTW: This is not to say that either of you would not make good Presidents. It is just that it would be rather surprising that Kevin would take on this task so soon after 2008. ..besides, I understand that Oscar Furtado is doing a truly commendable job. I commend your support for Mr Furtado, and commend to you the following: If it (the Presidency) ain't broke, don't fix it good wishes and thank you for placing your post on the record. jc
Re: [Goanet] Religion and Science
Date: Tue, 21 Apr 2009 19:05:58 +0530 From: Fr. Ivo C. de Souza icso...@bsnl.in I cannot study Theology without studying Science at all. Mario observes: Padre Ivo, With all due respect, if you are continuing to insist that the existence of God can be proven by science, after once agreeing that science cannot prove or disprove the existence of God, then, as Goanet's lone voice of reason, truth and peace, I am forced to conclude that you may have studied Theology and Science, but understood little of both. Here is a classic example of how little you know about how REAL allopathic medications are tested in double blind studies and comparisons with placebos ON HUMAN BEINGS. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-April/176852.html Excerpt: Are not homeopathic drugs being tested on human beings? They are efficacious even for animals. Allopathic drugs are tested on guinea pigs. [end of excerpt] Guinea pigs may be used only in very initial stages of development, but they don't go directly from guinea pigs to being approved for widespread use. This is also why you have ignored my post which questioned your illogical claim that there is no conflict between religion and science: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-April/176836.html Padre Ivo wrote: But he can discuss this topic without knowing Theology at all. Mario responds: I think if this discussion was about Theology you wouldn't hear a peep out of Santosh. Unfortunately, this discussion is not about Theology but about questionable experiments that are being passed off as scientific and bogus assertions that there is no conflict between religion and science.

It reflects the inspired words of the poet TOMAS RIBEIRO [1831-1901]: Eis a cidade morta, a solitária Goa Seis templos alvejando entre um palmar enorme Eis o Mandovi-Tejo, a oriental Lisboa Onde em jazigo régio imensa glória dorme There are really six churches (rather than five) as the poet says. All are welcome. - Hi! This is Clinton Vaz and you are recieving this mail because you have shown some interest in the Save the Frog Campaign in the past. I don't want to spam you, so in case you would like to receive such updates through this 2 month campaign, please let me know, and I'll continue to send you such updates. A week ago a group of concerned citizens came together to bounce off some ideas into the collective pond of thoughts towards the save the frog campaign for 2009 at the lawns of Kala Academy, Panjim, the capital of Goa. This was the third consecutive year where we've come together for the same cause, and though we saw a lot of familiar faces, there were new faces too. Getting onto the meeting, it was interesting to have members on both sides of the debate, do frogs need to be saved. These discussions let to a lot of productive suggestions and facts that eventually led everybody to agree that frogs do need urgent attention, and thefore the need of such a campaign. The following suggestions were made by those that were there. Thanks to everybody that did come and provided their inputs for a lot of interesting suggestions: 01-Expand on Reducing Chemical Pesticides: Expand the current campaign to educate people about reducing the amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in current farming procedures. A huge number of frogs is estimated to be killed on this account. Organic Food or Farmer associations such as those in Chorao could possibly work together with this campaign on this issue. 02-Testimonials from Former Frog Eaters Getting sound bytes or a short quote from people that formerly ate frogs, but don't anymore could possibly add a realistic and human angle to the campaign. There are already quite a few examples of people in Goa that liked eating frogs but lost their appetite once they learnt that the species was threatened / against the law / meat contained pesticide residues. 03-Meet Speak to Restaurant Owners Catch the bull by the horns, they say! We've already got a list of 15 restaurants from last year that we compiled with members help. Why not meet up with these owners and other offending restaurants too and speak to them about why we want frogs off the menu and in the fields and forests. Perhaps they might be supportive and volunteer on their own to be frog meat free this season onwards. Besides the the ethical aspect, getting caught serving the meat has a stiff sentence of upto three years in prison! 04-Picketing outside restaurants Black Flags, Plackards, Banners et al! If they won't listen, lets shame them and maybe supporting customers would prefer to eat at other restaurants once they know that these restaurants are violating forest laws. This suggestion is a bit provocative, and depends entirely on voluntary participation. Not more than 4 people at the meeting volunteered for such an action. 05-Save the Frog Bumper Stickers Recall the 'Save Goa' bumper stickers? They are still around, and remind you about the cause instantly. Bumper stickers are cheap to make and an effective tool in spreading a simple message around. Perhaps a campaign logo with a catchphrase would get people's attention. 06-Educate School Students Students are a great target audience for such a campaign. Involving the students however, means we would have to get their attention once school begins, in the first 2 weeks of June. We could organize contests, quiz competitions,

Re: [Goanet] RELIGION AND SCIENCE
Date: Tue, 21 Apr 2009 22:43:46 -0400 From: jane gillian rodrigues janerodrig...@rediffmail.com PRAYER REQUEST FOR JOSE ROD Dear Friends, We are saddened by the fatal news that Joseph Rodrigues popularly known as Jose Rod, a multi-talented individual hailed as the Super Star of the Konkani Stage, has been diagnosed of 'BRAIN TUMOR' and will be operated at the Hinduja Hospital at Mumbai, India on Thursday 23/04/2009 at 7:00 a.m. A humble request to all, to keep JOSE ROD in your prayers, so that the Almighty God may bless the hands of the surgeons who will be operating on him. Let us pray to Jesus to be present at the operating table for a successful operation. Mario responds: JGR, Thanks for your prayer for a cure for all my problems. One of my problems that really needs curing is understanding immediately when someone writes poppycock. BTW, I don't think you understood a word of what I said, so let's try again, shall we? You wrote: Yes, when all else fails, we pray to God for a miracle cure, and God always hears our prayers and cures us. And I responded HE does? Are you suggesting that those who die every day do not pray for a miracle cure? I did not suggest we should not pray for a cure, but I am surprised that you are suggesting that we should only pray for a cure WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, which puts all the responsibility on God to perform a miracle, after he has given us free will to take action before all else fails. What I questioned was your assertion that ...and God always hears our prayers and cures us. Clearly, this is false. More often than not God decides NOT to perform a miracle - as in curing me from immediately noticing poppycock:-)) However, in answer to your request, I hope it is true in the case of Jose Rod. The fact that they are doing surgery is a good sign because not all brain tumors are fatal. Please let us know how he is doing.
