Bahrain: Tivim continued their winning streak in the Basma Bahrain Goans Seven
A Side football league for Fr. Felicio Diniz Rolling Trophy played under the
patronage of Young Goans club at Al Qadisiya grounds in Salmaniya, Bahrain.

Tivim downed new entrants Baga 2-0 with Sandeep and Godfrey scoring in each
half. The young Baga lads tried had to level the match but Tivim goalkkeeper
Brijesh Kahnuja thwarted all their attempts.

Canacona droped vital points in the league when they drew both their matches
played during the week. In their first match they were held to a goalless draw
by Nuvem with neither team making an serious attempt to score. Canacona played
their second match against Benaulim and were leading by a goal from John Dias
until Benaulim were awarded a penalty kick in the last 5 minutes of the match.
Michael D’Souza made no mistake from the spot to level the score at 1-1.

In the last match of the week Navelim pumped in 4 goals to subdue Calangute
with a 4 -1 scoreline. Merwyn Afonso scored a brace, with Henry Fernandes and
Wilson Vales adding one each. Samson Fernandes reduced the margin for Calangute.

[Goanet] The Goan touch : Wendell Rodricks

2009-05-18 Thread Goanet News
The Goan touch

Wendell Rodricks abhors the idea of leaving Goa to cater for the
clubbing type. Shruti Pathak tries to understand the designer’s
mindset

Tucked away in a far off village in Goa, designer Wendell Rodricks
lives life on his terms. No random interviews, or Page 3 parties are
needed to draw attention to his designs. Far removed from the
complexities of city life, there is something rustic about his
personality that make him appear even more fashionable. He can just
about play up with white and turn it into a hot favourite for every
occasion. His latest collection showcased at the Kolkata Fashion Week,
titled the Mondarin Minimalist, brought out the other side to him.
Being an art patron, he has beautifully mixed art with fashion, paying
homage to the life of Yves Saint Laurent and the art of Piet Mondrian.
And has once again proved that clothing created in a rural Goan
setting can transcend into urban prêt wearability. The Statesman
caught up with him and this is what he had to say.

You are considered to be very reserved and calm ~ without an iota of
attitude. Are your designs an extension of your personality?
A designer’s attitude need not reflect in the clothes. But yes, I am
calm and stress free as are my clothes.

First Duncans dance philosophy, then Pieter Cornelis Mondrian’s art.
Does inspiration form a large part of your designs?
My designs are often based on a emotional inspiration whether it was
the Byzantine Empress Theodora or a collection as abstract as the
Dalai Lamam and reincarnation.

Your latest collection is a tribute to Yves Saint Laurent, designs of
whom are extremely European. Will it fit in with the taste here?
If you look carefully at the collection all the so-called dresses can
be worn with trousers or salwars. There are, in fact, many tunic sets
and two saris as well. There were also kurtas, dhotis and lungis for
men. We have sold this concept of Mondrian quite well. I am sure the
range at Westside will be a success.

Your fixation with basic colours like white and black has always added
a classic touch to your designs. But isn’t there an urge to explore
and just add vibrancy to your designs. Something chic that people can
wear while clubbing?
Mondrian has bright red, blue and yellow. But to reply to your
question, I don’t like clubbing and don’t do club clothes. My clients
are more elegant and will not get the clothes soiled with beverages
and nightclub smoke.

Considering the fact that your collection is retailed at Westside
stores, does that help reach the masses, who are apprehensive about
designer stores and the price factor?
People are unaware how reasonable the clothes are. When I tell them
they can buy a garment for Rs 1,700, they are shocked. At Westside we
will give designer value for money.

At a time when all mainstream designers are going the Bollywood way,
what is holding Wendell Rodricks back?
I have friends in Bollywood but the thought of leaving Goa for a
smoggy city and spend months inside hot studios, airless caravans and
terrible traffic is not my idea of creative expression. If I get a
good script that demands my kind of clothes I will do a movie but on
my terms. I was trained in Hollywood to deliver the wardrobe at one go
with proper sketches and fittings.

What next? What’s keeping you busy?
I have started working on my next collection to be showcased at LFW.
For the moment all I can say is that it is in two parts: one for
Westside and the other my own line. I am also planning a Chivas
collection and working on a book project.

Re: [Goanet] What evidence ?

2009-05-18 Thread Mario Goveia

Date: Mon, 18 May 2009 03:51:32 -0400
From: Joe Lobo

I happened to be watching last night on the Overseas Service
of BBC- TV an enlightening segment on Iraq where a BBC TV
correspondent was getting the views of average middle class
educated Iraquis on the state of their nation ,about 8 years
after the much revered USA president Mr. G.W. Bush decided
that he must have regime change then and introduced the old
concept of " democracy ". Speaking to a female university
lecturer who said ... " Mr. Bush may have had great zeal in
bringing us his western -style democracy..but he brought
us more pain andsuffering. Under Mr Saddam , our former
president who we knew was a military dictator..the poor
people had had enough to eat andlow level of medical
care. Now under the patronage and occupation of the
all-powerful USA we have hungry poor and the introduction of
corruption among our own Iraqui officials in the Homeand
Defence ministries who charge the common people enormous bribe
money to effect a simple transaction that was speedily done and
bribe-free in Saddam`s regime. If a young man wants to join the
army or the police, forexample , he has to be prepared to
pay an entry bribe to concerned officials of the equivalent of
$ 500 (US)."

Mario responds:

This is more selective reporting by the BBC which has supported the tyranny of
Saddam Hussein from the beginning with relentless propaganda against the
liberation.

The US gave Iraq an epic opportunity for freedom and democracy, peace and
prosperity, by removing Saddam's heavy heel from the necks of the Iraqi nation,
and did so in less than a month in 2003 with minimum casualties.

What happend next was the Iraqis turning against each other in sectarian
violence while the US-led coalition has been helping the Iraq government to
stop the mayhem and train them to handle their own security.

There is no "occupation" since the coalition forces have been invited to be
there by the Iraqi government to help secure Iraq's nascent democracy.

The corruption will have to be corrected by the Iraqi people through their own
electoral and legal systems.

Any comparison between Iraq and the corruption in Goa is patently absurd.

[Goanet] Goanet and Fidel Castro Award.

2009-05-18 Thread Mario Goveia

From: MD

Hope I am not intruding.

Mario responds:

No, you are not intruding, especially if you, too, want to be considered for
the Fidel Castro Award:-))

MD wrote:

Jesse Ventura (the former governor of Minnesota) On Larry King Live
(CNN): "You Give Me a Water Board, Dick Cheney and One Hour and I'll
have him confess to the Sharon Tate murders!!"

Mario responds:

The problem with this absurd and incredibly unintelligent comment by Jesse
Ventura which probably made sense to the clueless Larry King is that any
interrogator with more than half a brain looks at more than the admissions made
during waterboarding. In this case they would have known that Dick Cheney was
nowhere near California when Sharon Tate was murdered.

Furthermore, Dick Cheney would not have helped himself by providing false
information because he would have been waterboarded again once they found that
he had lied. Anyone with common sense would not want that.

MD wrote:

He also commented that if relations are normalized with Cuba, he would be proud
to be the US ambassador to Cuba. He also commented, USA is a democracy then why
Americans are barred from visiting Cuba.

Mario responds:

These are more idiotic comments from Jesse Ventura. The US - as a democracy -
also does not allow a host of activities including driving above speed limits
and driving without seat belts.

The restrictions against Cuba were applied by Democrat and Republican
administrations alike because they were part of economic and political
sanctions that the US governments had decided to impose on Cuba because of its
hideous political policies and horrible repression of political dissenters.

[Goanet] Science links Religion and Health

2009-05-18 Thread Mario Goveia

Mario Goveia observes:

I thought it was my cognitive function that was leading me to go to church -
not the other way around:-))

Now I can't wait to see the results of a similar study that examines the
effects of regular attendance at one's bridge club on one's cognitive
function:-))

Date: Sat, 16 May 2009 19:30:04 -0700 (PDT)
From: Gilbert Lawrence

If one with lack of cognitive function attends bridge club events, likely they
would find themselves with no partners or players to spend an evening with.
Fortunately that does not happen with church.

The scientific study based on their published conclusion, attributes the church
attendance as the cause of the benefit in maintaining MMSE and CES-D scores. I
hate to say this, but is this not what the Goan grandmothers used to claim? On
told that someone does not attend church their kindest comment was, "Dev
poita!" Surely some Goans may recount even sterner warnings.

Mario responds:

If one lacks cognitive function to begin with going to church is hardly likely
to create what is missing.

What I was suggesting was that there are likely to be many social activities,
in addition to church going, that create the positive and healthy mental
attitude which is what is behind the beneficial effects.

[Goanet] CONG IS KING

2009-05-18 Thread John Gomes
This was a verdict for continuity, stability, and showing the door for
divisive, communal and opportunistic politics! I hope MJ AKBAR is right when
he says that the election results show that the voter wants honesty, competence
and modesty. The BJP and left parties are out of touch with today's India.
Coming to Goa, I disagree with the CM who says this is  a verdict for endorsing
the governance of the present dispensation where "jo jeeta woh sikander"can
sweep under the carpet the simmering discontent obvious in the many attempts to
overthrow the government, the working at cross purposes by the old netas in
power, and peoples agitations everywhere. The BJP has a better and less corrupt
lot and is comparatively better organised. However if "None of the Above"
option was given to the voter, the results  in Goa could  have been very
surprising!
The opening of the courts after summer holidays, the finalising of RP2021,and
putting in place police and administrative reforms towards good governance will
decide whether the Congress in Goa will be worthy of the result oriented
government  expected to be formed at the Centre.

[Goanet] Smoking Gun for Iraq war

2009-05-18 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Hi Mario,

Just for the record, you and I are MERE messengers on this issue. So do not
take ownership of the information. I placed for the Goanet readers, the 'Left
wing / Paul Bagala' perspective and you placed the 'Right wing / Rush Limbaugh'
perspective.  So if any name-calling is warranted, please pass it on to the
original authors who should get credit for their writings.  Now goanetters have
a balanced view of the issues which  led to the Iraq war. This is the purpose
of this forum; and not to mis-characterize others, and their efforts to share
information with other Goanetters.

I read the "important resolution" that you posted, which was passed by US
Congress.   http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/bliraqreshouse.htm

Most of the above resolution (voting for the war), referred to Iraq's stockpile
of chemical weapons (CW) and biological weapons (BW); which as we all now know
were never found in Iraq.  Then there was the following in the resolution.

"Whereas members of al Qaida, an organization bearing responsibility for
attacks on the United States, its citizens, and interests, including the
attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq;

Whereas Iraq continues to aid and harbor other international terrorist
organizations, including organizations that threaten the lives and safety of
United States citizens;..."

It is interesting; the right wing when reminded that weapons of mass
destruction (WMD) were never found in Iraq, refer to the al Qaida connection.
When reminded of the lack of al Qaida connection,  we are told, "number of
reasons for the regime change in Iraq."

The real half-a-brain are those, on both side of the political isle, who voted
for the resolution, and the executive that prosecuted the resolution.  In
reality it is difficult to blame the Congress who was fed false information -
be it about Niger-uranium (Valerie Palme) saga, weapons of mass destruction
(WMD) and now the al Qaida connection.  This connection has also been known to
be false for quite some time. Bagala's article for the FIRST TIME tells us
HOW and WHY  the false information came into existence. Likely the Egyptians
passed the same false information obtained by "Enhanced Interrogation
Techniques" to the British.

Of interest in these revelations which are surfacing, the Enhanced
Interrogation Techniques (torture) were first presented as a means to get
information to foil another al Qaida attack on USA. The current controversy is
generating a time-line of events. This time-line suggest the torture program
was aimed to get confessions to justify the Iraq invasion. (see Maureen Dowd
article in the New York Times).  The only way to get a full and complete airing
of the issues is for a "Truth Commission" which I support. Those Goanetters who
support a Truth Commission and want to make their voice heard could sign a
petition at:
http://www.bushtruthcommission.com/forward
(Please feel free to pass this petition-signing to your family and friends)

I admire Goanetters who are 'walking encyclopedias'. Some proudly claim they
can whip-up their long reply with attached information, "in 10 minutes flat",
after reading a post.  The only problem;  their response is not necessarily a
reply to the specific issue being discussed in the post. i.e they are reading
information to match their own reservoir of knowledge, whether connected or not
to the post they just read. Often the remarks are taken out of context (to what
is written) and framed in the context the responder is familiar with or is
promoting.

This is my effort to keep Goanetters up-to-date with recently-unearthed
historical facts. It may be painful for some to know about them.  I thank you
for giving me the opportunity to explain to the Goanetters more detailed facts
about the mis-information that we-all were fed.
Regards, GL

Gilbert seems to suggest in his post that the relationship between Saddam and
Al Qaeda was the key reason for the regime change in Iraq.  This is itself
false.  There were a number of reasons for the regime change in Iraq that were
listed in the joint U.S. House-Senate resolution in October 2002 which
authorized the President of the U.S to use U.S. Armed Forces in Iraq.

dear Joebab

This small and beautiful beach is in Quepem taluka. Very few people
visited this beach untill about 19880s as the access to this village
was difficult due to inadequate transport.

Now it is not only overcrowded, but getting fithy as well. The village
is still unspoiled.Ghatis and builders should not be allowed to enter
this village. In fact the whole area from Betul to Cabe de Ram shouild
be declared as protected area and these are very few unspoiled areas
still not being encroached by destrustive builders and ghatis!

This village would be ideal to built home tourism which to me would be
ideal for Goa.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Africa, India, trade and a Goan author (FN)

2009-05-18 Thread Goanet Reader
Africa, India, trade and a Goan author

THE PRINTED WORD/By Frederick Noronha

Robert S Newman, the anthropologist from Marblehead, MA. who
has written quite a bit on Goa, calls our region "a land of
migration and exile". It has been so for centuries. In some
of his other writings, he has suggested that Goa has among
the highest out-migration levels in the world.

In view of this, it is surprising how little
attention is given to Goa's links with the outside
world. Or, even the doings of the diaspora in
  different pockets all over.

Small niche publications, like the online Goan Voice UK
[http://www.goanvoice.org.uk] run by retired UCL London
engineering librarian Eddie Fernandes do a good job of this
though.

Former Xavier Centre of Historical Research librarian Maria
Lilia 'Bunota' D'Souza shared with me the other day a book
authored by someone she knows. 'Harnessing the Trade Winds'
is a Goan-authored book, though its focus is not just tiny
Goa, but rather the wider canvas of understanding the
millennia-old trade links between India and East Africa.

Blanche Rocha D'Souza subtitles her book "the story of the
centuries-old Indian trade with East Africa using the monsoon
winds". D'Souza grew up as a child in Kenya, where her father
was district cashier. She studied in Karachi and Mumbai,
trained as a teacher, learnt library science in Kenya, was
senior cataloguer at the US Library of Congress and later
graduated in social psychology. Quite a global migrant even
in the Goan scheme of things!

Her 204-page Kenya-published book (ISBN 9966712321), coming
from Zand Graphics at Nairobi, is unfortunately not easily
available in Goa. Mine is a borrowed copy. Which is a pity,
because it is both interesting and informative.

D'Souza joins the small but dedicated rank of people who have
cut against the silence, and taken on the task of chronicling
the history of Goan migration globally. There have been
others like Stella Mascarenhas-Keyes (wish her work was
published in Goa), J.B.Pinto of Saligao who wrote in the
1960s, Teresa Albuquerque (who earlier focussed on the Goans
of Kenya and, indirectly, of Bombay) among others.

This small band has been focussing on the many tens of
thousands who have migrated out of Goa over the centuries.
Obviously, such a small number of researchers is not
sufficient. With India finally waking up to the potential of
its expats -- tiny Goa should have been at this point decades
ago -- one hopes much such studies come to light.

Of course, we know that there are others working on this
topic right now. But more on that when it actually happens.

If you're wondering what the 'trading wings' are
all about, read this quote from the National
Geographic, August 1999, which features at the
start of Chapter 15: "Around 120 BC, members of the
Egyptian Coast Guard found an Indian sailor
  shipwrecked on the Red Sea.

"They took him to Ptolemy VII. The sailor spoke a language
that no one in Alexandria knew, so Ptolemy ordered that the
sailor be taught Greek.

"Thus educated, the sailor taught his captors something
amazing; the Monsoons over the Indian Ocean blow in a regular
pattern -- from northeast to southwest in winter, and the
opposite direction in summer."

The Trade Winds are the most consistent wind system on earth,
we're told. Evidence suggests Indians made voyages across the
open sea to East Africa "from antiquity" while Malays used
the ocean currents to reach Madagascar.

In eighteen (mostly short) chapters, D'Souza goes into quite
some depth to trace links you'd never suspect even existed.
Her background in librarian science obviously gives her an
edge in collating such a wide range of facts.

It covers themes like the early Indian Ocean trade, Indians
in East Africa, Indian equations with various foreign powers
(British, Arabs, Portuguese), the Indian trader, the
"indentured Indian", the Uganda railway, and the trading winds.

Surely, one of the contentious chapters would be the one
dealing with Indians and the slave trade. D'Souza refers to
tracks such as African slaves here, the fact that the Muslim
king of Gaur in Bengal (1459-1474) had some eight thousand
slaves, and the influx of Abyssinian (Ethiopian) and other
East Africans into western India in the fifth century.

India, she says, could have not been unaware of the
slave trade, since they "exercised such a
predominant influence over East African trade".
D'Souza goes on to say that Indians were indirectly
implicated in the slave trade "inasmuch as Indian
merchant capital was financing both movements, in
and out of the interior of Africa, where
manufactured goods found their way into the
interior to be exchanged for slaves and ivory."

But, she suggests, British explorers (like Dr Livingstone)
tried to "implicate" Indians in the slave trade -- p

Panaji: Goa Board Withdraws Controversial Chapter in NCERT Book

By Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, May 15: Hindu Right wing organization has claimed that the Goa
Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has decided
to delete objectionable part from the NCERT’s controversial standard
VII text book.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, a Goa and Maharashtra based organisation,
had launched statewide agitations from March 13, 2009 onwards against
the textbook condemning the injustice meted out to great Maratha
worrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

“The G B S & H S E has taken cognizance of this agitation and decided
to change two whole chapters glorifying Mughals from the said
textbook,” Jayesh Thali, Convenor, HJS, has said in a press statement
here.

Quoting reliable sources in the Goa board, he added that "likewise, it
has decided to incorporate the local history in place of the same. The
objectionable matter in other chapters of the said book is also going
to be removed."

The GBSHSE officers were not available for the comment as they were
busy in the higher secondary education results to be declared today.

Thali said that the N C E R T has made a fleeting mention of
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the history text book for Std VII,
thereby according negligible position to him.

“The HJS along with like minded organisations, parents and teachers
had launched an agitation against the said textbook from March 13,
2009,” he said.

He said that the board has decided to change two whole chapters
glorifying Mughals from the said text.

Justifying their agitation, Thali said that of the 154 pages of the
history text book of Std. VII, most of the pages have been dedicated
to the information on Mughals and other Muslim kings who had invaded
Hindustan, whereas the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who
fought the foreign Mughal aggressors and established Hindu state has
been concluded in just four lines.

“Not only this, the books contain pictures of kings of 16th century
like Babar, Akbar etc. but there is not a single picture of
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who ruled in the 17th century. This shows
that Shivaji Maharaj has been relegated to an insignificant position
in the book,” he said.

Again strangely, the name of Maharana Pratap also does not figure in
the Rajput history. Also, the local history has not been included
inspite of this being mandatory, Thali added.

"Thus, the HJS and other likeminded organizations had staged an
agitation to demand immediate withdrawal of this book from the
curriculum,” he stated.

“As a part of this agitation, various constitutional measures such as
holding taluka level meetings, submitting memorandums, staging
demonstrations and rallies and others were adopted,” the HJS said.

2009-05-18 Thread Joe Lobo

Gabriel and Samir,
I happened to be watching last night on the Overseas Service
of BBC- TV an enlightening segment on Iraq where a BBC TV
correspondent was getting the views of average middle class
educated Iraquis on the state of their nation ,about 8 years
after the much revered USA president Mr.
If a young man wants to join the
army or the police, forexample , he has to be prepared to
pay an entry bribe to concerned officials of the equivalent of
$ 500 (US)."
Now , one may ask me what the above has to do
with Goa ?
Visiting Goa in November 2005 , I was assured by old
residents around Mapusa and Candolim that if a suitably
qualified University graduate wanted to join the Goa State
Police service in the officer cadre he hadbe prepared to
pay a bribe to the relevant recruiting officers of the
minimum of 2 lakh rupees. Naturally, on appointment to a
suitable post he worked towards recouping his " entry fee"
by extorting from citizens or the constables under him.
Would any police officer at high position in Goadeny
this happens ? The I-G of Goa State police will , of course
, feign ignorance of the situation or any complicity in such
dealings .but one wonders on hearingof such standard
operating procedures how endemic the corruption that has crept
in from India since 1961 has become in
Goa. whether it is under the patronage
of the Congress govt.who kow-tow the Party High command
in Delhior the more innovative goans in Goawho find a
quick way to make a buck.

[Goanet] POLLS-2009: Strategies spun by Modi failed

2009-05-18 Thread Goanet News
Strategies spun by Modi failed
17 May 2009, 0405 hrs IST, TNN

Mediocre show in the West
Besides 26 seats in Gujarat, he was made election in-charge of 52
seats of Maharashtra, Goa, Dadra Nagar
& Haveli and Diu-Daman. BJP and allies’ tally of 40 in 2004 slid
marginally to 37 this time under Modi. But, more worrying for Modi
supporters is the fact that he could not convert crowds into votes at
places he addressed public meetings.

Hand-picked men
Ignoring protests, Modi changed 17 candidates. He even went to the
extent of fielding three Congressmen. While Modi’s gamble had paid off
on previous occasions, eight of his hand-picked men lost. These were
Somji Damor (Dahod), Lalji Mer (Surendranagar), Bhavsinh Rathod
(Patan), Kiran Patel (Rajkot), Mansukh Kachariya (Porbandar), Ramesh
Mungra (Jamnagar), Ritesh Vasava (Bardoli) and Dhiru Patel (Valsad).

Tainted candidates
Name of at least four candidates Modi picked up had figured in
different scams. Dipak Sathi (Anand), CR Patil (Navsari) and
Prabhatsinh Chauhan (Panchmahal) were allegedly involved in co-op bank
scams; Bhavsinh Rathod (Patan) was an accused in a drug trafficking
case. While Patil and Chauhan won, Rathod and Sathi lost.

Sound bytes failed to bite
He called Rahul Gandhi a fish in an aquarium. He named 125-year-old
Congress as ‘budhiya’. Priyanka Gandhi became ‘gudiya’ for him.

Anti-Modi clamour
Detractors have started gunning for Modi. If BJP president Rajnath
Singh said the party was disappointed with Maharashtra (the state Modi
was in-charge of), another senior leader Chandan Mitra said projecting
Modi as PM candidate midway through the campaign was a mistake.

Home alone
A rattled Modi preferred to remain ensconsed at his official residence
in Gandhinagar. Even in 2007, he had monitored results of Assembly
polls all alone. He had visited the BJP headquarters only after the
final results were announced. On Saturday, however, Modi did not
venture out.

While such reports make for often noticed, sensational reading, one
has to be wary before believing the same.

The "urban legends" page says, in a similar context:

"It is critical to maintain the disctinction between what is fact and
what is folklore because, while it's accurate to say there is a grain
of truth to the legends, it is simply false to assert that the recent
incidents "prove them true." The perpetrators of the recent crimes
were copycats, merely imitating the same stories we've all already

in the punchline "Welcome to the world of AIDS" date back at least 10
years)."

[Goanet] More Science links of Religion and Health

2009-05-18 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
The Brain on Religion:

Says Andrew Newberg, a neuroscientist at the University of Pennsylvania.
Meditation and prayer can improve your physical, intellectual, and emotional
well-being and may even slow the brain's aging process.

The entire article can be seen at:
http://www.sfgate.com/columns/findingmyreligion/

The pertinent questions from the article:

Question: There was a statistic cited in your book showing that Americans
mostly view God as authoritarian, critical, or distant -- only 23 percent of
believers see God as gentle and forgiving ...

Answer: That's one of the things that we really want to advocate for, that
people have to be cautious about the beliefs they hold in terms of whether they
focus on God and religion as something that's a positive influence in their
lives and provides forgiveness and compassion or whether they're going to look
at God and religion as exclusive and negative, because that really does have a
detrimental effect.

The good news is that the brain does have the ability to continually change and
adapt, and therefore, even if you have gone down a fairly long path of negative
emotions, you do have an opportunity, if you start to focus anew on the other
side, so to speak, to bring about changes that are more positive. I don't mean
to make it sound simplistic -- it's not like you are just going to flip a
switch, most likely, and change your whole way of being. It does take effort.

Question: When you talk about the effects of religious beliefs or activities on
the brain, that's a very broad spectrum of possibilities to consider. Does it
matter what you believe or what sort of practices you're doing?

Answer: The particular beliefs and practices are very important. One major
point is the difference between having a loving and compassionate view of God
versus a God that is vengeful, angry, and exclusive. We know from other
research that if you focus your mind on positive emotions, and if you have an
optimistic outlook, then that is going to activate the areas of your brain that
help you lower stress, which helps you to function better and ultimately to be
healthier physically and mentally. And if you focus on a God that's angry and
vengeful, that activates the anger centers of your brain, the strong emotional
centers, which creates stress and anxiety. When that happens, your body
releases hormones that can actually damage the way your brain functions which
fosters more negative emotions and negative behaviors outwardly. That can be
destructive both for the individual as well as on society as a whole.

2009-05-18 Thread sebastian Rodrigues

Suresh Babani Gaonkar and Dhruvanjay V. Harmalkar were arrested by Bicholim
Police Sub Inspector Terence Vaz and head costable Pradeep Kubal on May 10 2009
for protesting against Chowgule mining company plying its mining trucks through
their property. They were picked by from Sirgao village in North Goa at around
11.30 am without serving any call letters. The arrests came 4 days after the
Sirgao Zatra festival in the village with scarce water due the giant mining
companies sucking their water sources dry.

Once taken into police custody they were put into police lock up. They were not
served any meals and were starved till they were bailed out at around 5 pm on
the same day.

So much for protesting against the marauding mining industry. Sirgao's village
wells, springs has gone dry due to mining while its agricultural lands are
lying fallow due to unavailability of water for paddy cultivation. And Bicholim
DySp Bousset D'Silva came up with a suggestion that these fields be converted
into the parking place for the vehicles! NEERI report has declared that mining
activities are responsible for downfall of 80 acres of paddy fields due to
depletion of groundwater.
