[Goanet] Yap, yap freedom fighter on Goa Contacto

2009-05-28 Thread Bernado Colaco

As advised by Dr. Nalini director de Contacto Goa I managed to get a glimpse of
the current episode which related to the polemic events of 61. What one saw is
a deep focus by Contacto Goa almost hand in glove with the last leg freedom
fighters namely Libia Lobo Sardesai and Prabakar Sinari (daughter with
Portuguese citizenship).

In 61 the bharat army raped Goan women, luckily Libia Lobo was not a victim of
this atrocity. What one sees and hears from this lady is only blah, blah to the
dark events where she spells the brain washed version that Portuguese soldiers
fired the first shot thereby bharat had the upper hand to attack Goa. Today and
thanks to the net and forums one understands that bharat was a provocateur and
that they initiated the vast invasion by land, air and sea.

Unfortunately Contacto Goa provided weak contra to the 'liberation view' by
interviewing some weak bokdes without any political thinking. Dr. Nalini was
provided an attachment by Eng. Paulo Colaco where dr. Fernando Colaco
extensive information could have been used. But alas after 48 years the brain
washing of false information continues to reign and this time spread by the
Portuguese (RTP) themselves.

[Goanet] Goa is going backwards with Shiroda leading !

2009-05-28 Thread Samir Kelekar

I have heard that every fortnight at the Kamakshi Temple in Shiroda, lakhs
of devotees turn up. The money collected ( would anyone check the sources
of the income ?) is in crores, as per what I have heard.

And now I hear of this gold thing.

Quite interestingly, our Mahanand Naik belongs to the same Shiroda.

Apparently, Goddess Kamakshi couldnt do anything to save the innocent women
from Mahanand.

May be now, more women will throng to Kamakshi asking her to protect them. They
might even go wearing gold so as to impress the Godess, and the time is just
ripe for Mahanand-II.

Samir

Re: [Goanet] Our facile Goan Catholic Society .. It has not changed !!!

2009-05-28 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक न ोरोन्या
This seems like the Goan trend of blaming the underdog for it all!

I thin the Goan bhatkar has a death-wish (okay, I can understand the
role post-1961 politics has played here, but don't overlook the fact
that this class also lived a cloistered existence, happy with an
unsustainable exploitative state of affairs, and thought they could
continue their dominant role forever).

Being out of touch with reality (the pre-1961 censorship helped) meant
that the demise of the Estado da India came as a big shock. Most
bhatkars have sold out and moved on elsewhere. I know that some of the
first families that sold their large homes to foreign buyers were from
this very section, and didn't need the Rs 44 lakhs (which in the early
1990s seemed like big money indeed!)

One can't blame the tenants here.

The Goan bhatkar class would have been better off for itself, if it
had a vision and a social conscience. Given our history, I guess it
anticipated it could escape both. FN

2009/5/27 Gabriel de Figueiredo gdefigueir...@yahoo.com.au:

 Selma,

Do you know the reason why Goan bhatkars want to sell the land? They cannot
cultivate it (as it is held by a lessee who is no longer interested in
cultivating it - now that they get remittances from abroad) nor lease it to
someone else, due to the Tenancy Act. The poor bhatkar has to pay the tax,
but gets nothing in return. So the next best thing is to get it converted and
 sell it off.

So, before you blame the bhatkar, please investigate the reasons behind the
 sale.

Please note that a number of mundkars, especially those that have sons
working abroad, have now illegally built walls round what they now consider
as their property, causing unnecessary hardship to their neighbours,
blocking right-of-way. I know it because a few years ago, I witnessed an ugly
incident between an uncle and a nephew, all because of their new-gotten
 gulfi-wealth.

[Goanet] The Best Goan Blogs on the web

2009-05-28 Thread gaspersWorld
By Gasper Crasto, Kuwait

Blogs, short for web logs, started out mostly as personal web journals.
However, thanks to sites like Google, which allows people to easily create
blogs in a matter of minutes, these simple internet outposts are rapidly
expanding and evolving.

I've noticed that many people have their own blogs nowadays. If they don't,
they read other people's blogs and post their comments on them, or forward
the links to friends.

There are no longer any limits to what people will post on their blogs. You
have people posting pictures, naming and describing them. You have people
posting their favorite movies or songs (Really? Who cares?). Some people
obviously take it too far and post inappropriate information and visuals.

Some blogs serve a purpose in that they inform people of upcoming events,
breaking news or just plain information about many things like drama,
culture, language, etc. Certain blogs are politically or economically
oriented and give a forum for open debate on vital social topics. These
types of blogs are great because they benefit humanity in one way or another

One of the most significant blogs among Goans is on the Taitr Academy. The
material is taken from several Goan writers/reporters. Another one is Eddie
s blog - one of the best on Konkani songs, mandos, etc.

However, there are a large number of blogs out there that don't actually
serve a purpose. They are like ‘diaries in disguise'. While some are ‘active
with regular updates others can be termed as ‘pooped' archives.

Some people who blog have a false sense of grandeur. They actually believe
that their words, beliefs, likes and dislikes are important to the rest of
the world. These bloggers are under the impression that when they post about
their diarrhea or the fact that they are allergic to tomatoes, they are
being interesting and helpful. These people feel the need to inform the
world of their upcoming life events, things that even their own dear ones
don't want to hear about.

Why is it so important to know about a blogger who likes to eat while in the
shower? Psychologically speaking, there must be a reason for the need to
feel important in stranger's eyes...? The internet is a tool that has
simplified our lives, we should not use it to publicize how we like to cook
our sausages!

Usually, reading someone else's diary is a very interestingly sneaky thing
to do. However, when it is posted for the world to see, the deceitful appeal
is stripped away. If I am reading someone's secrets and every one has access
to them, then they can no longer be classified as secrets...

In my research I have identified some of the best Goan blogs. (You may add
to the list and have your own rating). Of course, most of these blogs are
mind-numbingly dull but you need to dig deep to find the gems among them:

Shrikant,

How do you/they know that these children have been benefited? How did they
measure the benefits in terms of intelligence, immunity and bodily strength?
How did they determine that these benefits were solely due to this ritual as
opposed to anything else, such as the conventional vaccines that the children
received or the milk they drank? How were they able to compare these children
with 50,000 other children who were not subjected to this ritual - a comparison
that would be necessary to assess net benefit?

Cheers,

Re: [Goanet] Our facile Goan Catholic Society .. It has not changed !!!

2009-05-28 Thread Carvalho

I want to take a slightly different position from both FN and Gabriel here, not
because I know Goa better but because I can identify with the village
mindset. There is a pretty big disconnect between urban Goa and rural Goa,
between middleclass Goa and the labouring class.

Both the mundkar and the bhatkar want to tenaciously hold on to land that is
free for settlement on development. The mundkar knows sooner or later he can
wrangle quite a sizeable portion of the bhatkar's land. The bhatkar knows he
can rope in a big-time builder for top money. No one in Goa is absolved from
this basic human desire to make money off the land.

There are but a few activists in Goa who have done a great job of bringing to
the fore the extent of ecological damage to the environment on account of
indiscriminate use of land. We cannot undermine their contribution, whatever
their political affiliations might have been or their personal agendas were or
however far-end of the spectrum their ultimate objectives were. At least there
is a cursory awareness of environmental protection created.

If I think about this carefully, without any emotional rhetoric, the problem
is, not just in Goa but elsewhere in India, of land. It's scarcity and the fact
that it is infact the only commodity one can barter for a sizeable amount of
money. This position makes it impossible to make this an ethical issue. It is
an economic challenge; how to safeguard the environment while creating
opportunity for the citizens. It is a challenge which will continue to plague
Goa for many years to come, for the torrent of dissent springs from the
village, not the urban area. Those badly need development and rehabilitation,
unfortunately there are no investors willing to do so.

Best,
Selma

Re: [Goanet] Goanet Reader: ... there isn't a true Congressman in Goa(Nisser Dias)

2009-05-28 Thread floriano
When I went about having organized the all Goa brainstorming sessions in
1999, sickened

to the bone marrow by the CONGRESSMENs' culture of defections in Goa
(Sardinha's exit from Congress to form the government with BJP support), one
thing which stood out loud and clear was that the CONGRESS in Goa was beyond
redemption as it was not really the CONGRESS at all but a hotch-potch mixed
brew of self-seeking political mercenaries. And it became all the more
clear from these sessions that if at all something had to be done, it was to
fight dirty politics with clean, sincere and self-sacrificing politics. And
voila ! GOA SU-RAJ was born.

Today, at the threshold of a decade after this historic event of August,
2000, I commend Nisser Dias for having said what he has said in his bold
write-up.

I have always been the votary of the 'basic' CONGRESS thought process, with
no doubt in my mind whatsoever that from time to time, having put to the
test of fire, it will always come out shining, it having been the party that
brought independence to this country, a party of great minds and rock solid
will to succeed. The people of India, for their part, have shown the door
to this party more than once, hoping that it will shake itself, violently if
necessary, to get rid of the added trash it collected on its way and come
out shining once again. Elections 2009 is one such test of fire and the the
people of India have brought the CONGRESS out shining by decimating the
communal Baah Jaah Paah and the commie left, etc. It is only hoped that it
will maintain the 'shine'. However, there is no doubt in my mind that with
genuine persons like Dr. Manmohan Singh around, the shine will be
maintained. But as far as this little state of Goa is concerned, inspite of
the good intensioned persons like Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Goa Congress has
to be burnt at the stake, not allowing it to come out of the fire, for it
has been totally and absolutely corrupted in body and mind. And the bearer
of the flaming torch that will strike fire at the base of the (Goa)
congress stake will be the Goa Su-Raj Party. It will be interesting to see
if Dr. Manmohan Singh, in all his genuineness and goodwill, will be able to
douse this flaming torch with enough water to save Goa Congress from its
inevitable demise.

I will venture with one example why Goa Congress has to be burnt at the
stake.

Take, for instance, the mind boggling serial killings of 'Mahanand Naik'. It
becomes more and more obvious that Mahanand has been the protege of an
influential Congressman who has been sheltering him, to exhibit the boldness
with which he has been going ahead to do what he has done for these many
many years. If my memory serves me right, there was the 'acid throwing case'
on a lady in Duler, Mapusa some time ago. The suspect has never been
identified and brought to book despite many vital leads. I have reasons to
believe that this suspect was also the protege of this influential
Congressman as he is believed to be hailing from Ponda area.

The Goa Su-Raj's flaming torch that will burn such influential Congressmen
at the stake will be:

IC [Influential Congressmem/Politicians] calling the Incharge of the
concerned Police Station [PI]:

Prevailing scene:
IC: You have just arrested Mr. 'X' [Mahanand Naik]. See that he goes home
with a clean slate. He is my man.
PI: ( Standing at attention and saluting) YES SIR. This will be done
immediately.

The scene that will prevail with GSRP at the helm of Goa's administration:

IC [or whoever]: You have just arrested Mr. 'X' . See that he goes home
with a clean slate. He is my man.

PI: Yes Sir ( no salute). Only thing you must do is to come to the Police
Station and sign for Mr. X's release. It is necessary we have the record
that you vouch for him. Instructions from TOP, Sir.

It is precisely because some bhatkars had a social concience that they didn't
throw out the mundkars at the first inkling of the news that a Tenancy Act was
being enacted, as quite a number did.  However, now that the land is in the
hands of the second generation, neither bhatkar nor mundkar is bothered with
either side of the encumbrances. Hence what you see out there, I am sorry to

In the meanwhile, I have noticed that in case of a dispute between mundkars,
the bhatkar is called upon to decide, and the Sarpanch washes his/her hands off
the matter ...

 Shrikant,

How do you/they know that these children have been
benefited? How did they measure the benefits in terms of
intelligence, immunity and bodily strength? How did they
determine that these benefits were solely due to this ritual
as opposed to anything else, such as the conventional
vaccines that the children received or the milk they drank?
How were they able to compare these children with 50,000
other children who were not subjected to this ritual - a
comparison that would be necessary to assess net benefit?

Re: [Goanet] Our facile Goan Catholic Society .. It has changed !!!

2009-05-28 Thread Eugene Correia

Dear Fred, it is true that, to a large extent, Goan society is exclusivist. But
over the past few years, the dividing lines have been erased to a large degree.
Goans from all strata life mix much more easily -- and freely -- with each
other now that during the Portuguese period or for at least two decades after
the Portuguese left.
Do not judge yourself as failure to learn Konknni when you were just two years
old. Judge yourself how much you can talk and write now. Obviously, you are
fluent in spoken Konknni. I haven't seen any Konknni writing by you.
In the same breath, I am not a fluent Konknni writer. But, I would be a bit
careful to write an irreverent Konknni sentence like Selma's.
Like you, I too tried hard to study Portuguese in Toronto but without success.
I wish I could at least read so that I could access a lot of Poruguese books on
Goan history and culture.
I never said nor maintain that failing to speak and write Konknni makes one
Goan. But not to speak the mother tongue is, in my opinion, a bit of a
hindrance.
Just the other day at my gym, one member asked me if I was a Goan. I said yes,
and he asked me if I speak Konknni. I said yes. He went ahead and shot at me,
Ponas, ponas ponchivis. With a subdued smile, I told him that he was wrong.
His eyebrows went up.
Even before I could tell him, a fellow Muslim non-Goan member told him that it
is, Pondra, pondra ponchivis. He felt humiliated. The Muslim non-Goan member
is from Mazagoan area of Mumbai, which used to have a large Goan population. I
then asked him where he hails from Goa and he replied Aldona. He lived in
Mumbai.
For those who do not know, the pondra... thing is a slur or perhaps a
put-down, just like maka pao. It implies that Goans are uneducated nuts, just
as Goans are considered cooks and butlers.
In a previous posting, I have mentioned how a couple of letter-writers to The
Goan Review deride Goans who cannot speak the language and that those who
cannot speak and write are responsible for losing their identity. Tiatrists
poke fun all the time at Goans who do not speak Konknni. They also mock those
who speak with English-accentuated Konknni. But the tiatrists are in the
business to entertain and can be excused. Hitting at Goans who do not know the
language draws a good amount of laughter.
Frankly, I expected Selma to be not perfect but near-perfect. But then, the
issue is not incorrect usage of language. Sekna wrote it in jest but the joke
seems to be on her.

It does not mean that we should stop the practice.

At Bharatiya Ayurvedic College the prepare Suvarnaprashan.

I beleive.

There is a sample size of half lac benefiitiaries. to get a good result about
benefit from these Suvarnaprashan may take few decades to be know. (My logic).

Consumtion of Suvarnaprashan is harmful has not been reported to collage.

It is not tested means It may not be as per American standard.

Suvarnaprashan given all over India is not banned by Indian Govenment or any

Re: [Goanet] Our facile Goan Catholic Society .. It has changed !!!

2009-05-28 Thread Carvalho

Dear Eugene,

First of all, this I am more Goan-than-thou, thingy has to stop.

Secondly let me assure you that I am fluent in shasti Konkanni, which is spoken
quite differently from its Bardez variant or even the Marathi variant. I admit
my spellings are shot to hell.

Lastly, since when is it un-Goan to make jokes about our own society. One
Francisco Joao da Costa, writing at the turn of the 19th century, under the
non-de-guere of GIP, created a sensation in Goa by poking fun at the Margao
elite. If you ever get the book, Jacob and Dulce, or the original column
written as notas a lapis, please do read this author, who to me is a Goan
literary God. His evocative writing, perhaps, engineered an introspection of
our Catholic society, although at the time he came in for a lot of flak for the
so-called intelligentsia. We Goan Catholics must be introspective, all the
time, otherwise we run the risk of becoming redundant.

I never knew you to be so humourless Euguene.
Best from shastikaan,
Selma

An Indian dies and goes to hell. There he finds that there is a different hell
for each country. He goes first to the German hell and asks What do they do
here? He is told First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then
they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the German devil comes in
and whips you for the rest of the day.

The man does not like the sound of that at all, so he moves on. He checks out
the USA hell as well as the Russian hell and many more. He discovers that they
are all more or less the same as the German hell.

Then he comes to the Indian hell and finds that there is a very long line of
people waiting to get in. Amazed he asks What do they do here?

He is told First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay
you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the Indian devil comes in and
whips you for the rest of the day.

But that is exactly the same as all the other hells - why are there so many
people waiting to get in? Because maintenance is so bad that the electric
chair does not work, someone has stolen all the nails from the bed, and the
devil is a former Govt servant, so he comes in, signs the register and then
goes to the cafeteria...

Au contraire, mon demagogue ami. I am only vile to those who build straw men

fact is that Andrew Sullivan, who you assumed was the author of the post, is
not the author. That is how much you pay attention to what you read and respond
to.

Mario responds:

Actually, I was abu, ...er, criticizing you and being factual about Mr.
Sullivan because my actual words were, It continues to amaze me how you find
and follow the most ignorant and biased bloggers in America. Andrew Sullivan
is a far left wing advocate for the homosexual community and knows about as
much as you do about economics.

However, you are correct that I missed who wrote the specific post you were
referring to. I'm not sure it changes anything though, because Richard Posner
is a lawyer and jurist, not an economist, who proved how little he understands
about economics and current events in the US when he described the Clinton
administration as conservative when he wrote in an essay on the conservative
movement losing steam, By the end of the Clinton administration, I was content
to celebrate the triumph of conservatism as I understood it,

Greenspan correctly describes his analysis as thin. For him to debate Alan
Greenspan on economics is like you trying to debate Santosh Helekar on medical
research:-))

Besides, the housing bubble had little to do with the Fed and interest rates as
Posner has decided, and far more to do with the government regulators forcing
banks to lend money to high risk borrowers for social engineering purposes.
The banks should have stuck to lending money to those who could reasonably
repay their loans.

Posner says it was de-regulation that caused the financial crisis, when it
was actually government regulation, based on the Community Reinvestment Act,
that was at the root of the crisis.

Unfortunately, instead of resisting, the banks gave up and joined in with
incredibly idiotic lending practices like interest only loans, no down payment
loans, 100% plus loans, accepting fraudulent loan applications, etc. which
inflated their loan portfolios and earned them inflated bonuses as well. Had
the banks refused to lower their credit standards we would not have had the
bubble or the house of cards that collapsed as soon as the economy slowed -
which it always does at some point. Anyone who ignores the inevitable economic
downturns of the business cycle and conducts business by assuming uninterrupted
growth should pay the price as well.

To work properly, capitalism needs to reward success, good ideas and good
decisions, and penalize failure. This self-correcting mechanism is what has
broken down due to political reasons. Instead of just those who screwed up
paying the price, we will all pay a heavy price as a result,

Gilbert wrote:

Despite your lofty statements on goanet, for you to raise in a degrading
manner, the (alleged) author's stand on homosexuality, in a discussion of
economics, reflects your extreme views of other human beings, with whom you may
not agree.

Mario responds:

Andrew Sullivan is a proud public homosexual and a vociferous advocate for his
community. I did not use his proclivity pejoratively or gratuitously, but
simply as a fact to question the validity of a serious discussion on economics
in such a forum as his blog. For you to take umbrage at facts about Sullivan
probably reflects more on your discomfort with his proclivity while sharing his
politics.

Gilbert wrote:

I am joining the vast majority of goanetters to place you on my 'do not dialog

However, I hope you are not under the delusion that I will reciprocate:-))

Placebo - The Real Thing

From the link below, non-medical readers can get a good idea of how placebo
works - via well known physiological pathways - or what is called 'Mind over
Body'.  This serious write-up is from the Science Editor of Newsweek magazine
and appeared in this month's issue. The link is provided below

http://www.newsweek.com/id/198727?from=rss

To the scientists on this forum (and there are many) the question is if On an
average sham acupuncture delivered as much benefit as real acupuncture,
then how much of the real acupuncture is scientific and real?  If scientific
(expensive) medicines can use the placebo effect as the studies show, why would
not the same pathways apply to / be used by Ayurveda, homeopathy, alternative
medicines, nutraceuticals, etc.?  These need some real explanations, not some
demagoguery.

For those interested in the science and medical version of Hooked on a Feeling
- This is your brain on Placebo please read this month's issue of Archives of
Medicine. What is intriguing, the various (3) types of acupuncture
(non-traditional treatments) had about twice the benefit (60 percent) compared
to the standard medical care with anti-inflammatory drugs (39 percent).  I
have still to study this paper in detail.

It is precisely because some bhatkars had a social concience that they

the land is in the hands of the second generation, neither bhatkar nor

In the meanwhile, I have noticed that in case of a dispute between

[Goanet] I like this idea of Aldona AMFT

2009-05-28 Thread JoeGoaUk

I like this idea of Aldona AMFT

I remember at the time when I needed for my Mom, I place order with
a local maker and a painter 3 weeks in advance. Got it delivered on
time but painter took long time despite several reminders and in the
end it was done in a shabby way – reason being he was a known
alcoholic (was young 30 and a good artist though).

A year later, it was missing from the AMFT, made another.
(People were stealing them only to sell it back to the makers/painters).

My local church had once approached me for a donation for extension
of AMFT.

And I will definitely suggest this idea to the leaders.

It can be a great help to a poorer family too.

Every coffin has a metal plate on its cover to indicate the dead man’s name,
DOB/DOD

Just before the burial, we make sure that the plate (along with
the cross/crucifix) is removed or detached from the coffin.
Don’t know what we do with it then after.

Well, with this idea, the same plate can be attached to the
already existed fixed ones

I also saw similar idea at Navelim but here I think they were of marble instead
of metal.

Re: [Goanet] Suvarnaprashana for children on May 28 at Shiroda Goa

 Dr. Santosh Helekar,
This is exectly the difference, I believe, you dont
 beleive.

My concern is that this belief is a blind belief in something just because it
is ancient or Indian or eastern or sacred. I am alarmed that this belief might
be harmful to children who have no health reasons to be exposed to this type of
risk. I am outraged that this ayurvedic college is luring parents to risk the
health of their healthy child by making wild unsubstantiated claims about a
ritual whose safety has not been ascertained.

It does not mean that we should stop the practice.

A practice whose safety and efficacy have not been proven from the standpoint
of the consumer should not be started in the first place. One must not put a
healthy infant's or toddler's life and health in jeopardy based on some ancient
untested claims about a ritual that might be dangerous, considering what is
known about toxic effects of heavy metals.

There is a sample size of half lac benefiitiaries. to get a
good result about benefit from these Suvarnaprashan may take
few decades to be know. (My logic).

Were the parents of these children told that the benefit and/or harm of this
ritual are unknown, and that it might take few decades to know?

It is one thing to try wacky untested remedies with informed consent on sick
people with incurable conditions, but quite another - indeed criminal - to
subject healthy children to a potentially dangerous secret ancient ritual.

Cheers,

Santosh
