We call this Molão

Pealed and cut into pieces and add sugar, taste good.
Now, chilled one  taste even better.

I remember, after slicing it into two, we removed the inside
part or sticky bunch of seeds and throw or spread it over the
external walls.
This is either to feed the rats :-)
or to use it for germination
(for growing in the field etc). We ate the dried seeds too.

Subject: A message on Your One Hundred Years of Fortitude

Dear esteemed editor, Mr. Ashwin Tombat, Executive editor Mr. Raul
Fernandes,

The Goa Su-Raj Party takes the utmost pleasure in wishing you o Heraldo
o - Herald ... combined ... many, many happy returns of the past century
and continue wishing it more fruitful innings for future centuries to come.

Yours is the story of fortitude and perseverance and for that this fledgling
party commends and congratulates you.

There was an instance, very early in the life of this party when I had
personally approached your esteemed editor, Mr. Rajan Narayan, who now, by
the way, happens to be my good friend, for the reason of wanting to know if
he felt that this newly formed party (at that time) had some crippling
deficiencies that made him ignore any and/or all press statements/press
releases issued by this party. And his spontaneous response to me was:

Quote
Tum poilem kitem korun dakhoi, then we shall print
Unquote

This was my most spontaneous reply to that:
Quote
Vhoi - Ami tuka kiteim punn korun dacoiteleaum - Punn tuca hassoum'cheak
margar nagde nasche'naum

Unquote

And, in the same breath I had asked him if he had understood what I said.
When he shook his head, this is what I had told him. " All the more reason
for you not to talk to a native in his native tongue'.

That apart, I like the line in your write-up/editorial of today when you say
you had no mine owners to draw financial support from, no vested interests
to protect. Likewise, when this party was formed, it was formed for Goa and
Goans with no ulterior motives, no mine owners and big business sharks to
finance it and no vested interests to protect. Sixteen persons signed the
charter for ' GOOD EFFECTIVE GOVERNANCE' for Goa, hoping that our various
political parties would follow it for Goa's sake, but finding this to be a
most impossible task, took on the mantle themselves by inventing GOA SU-RAJ
PARTY. It has been a long track of 10 years, the road having been rough,
but nevertheless, track it we will, even if Goans fail to realize its real
intentions.

And, just like o Herald o and Herald, we shall taste the victory one day.

Thank you, big brother, for this much needed lesson in 'fortitude and
perseverance'.

I saw this plant after long time.
It had a local name but unable to recollect now.
I think, it was even taken for medicinal use

On this plant we use to catch variety of pakule or cacule (butterfly)
Even the bigger one called ‘girilianv’

As these plants were plenty, we used to uproot some of them
Make a bunch (sort of a bouquet)  to trap the butterflies.

Saw this one after many many years

[Goanet] Goanet Reader -- Goa: Return of the North-South Divide (Maria do Ceu Rodrigues, in EPW)

ANALYSIS | Goa: Return of the North-South Divide
Maria do Ceu Rodrigues

An apparent lack of enthusiasm
for either of the two main
political parties in Goa was
evident in the Lok Sabha
elections. This negative
opinion of the nature of
governance in the state,
combined with the lack of a
clear-cut differentiation
between the parties on issues
that dominated in the run-up to
the elections ensured that the
traditional north-south divide
determined the outcome in the
two parliamentary
constituencies in Goa.

The 2009 Lok Sabha poll saw the two major players in the Goan
politics, sharing the spoils of victory evenly. While the
North Goa seat was bagged by the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP), the Congress candidate emerged victorious in the South
Goa seat.1 This election once again restored the traditional
voting pattern that has been seen in Goa. The
political/ideological divide in the state, shaped by its
colonial past, runs also on geographical lines -- north and
south Goa. The two geographical regions have their distinct
voting patterns. The majority community dominates the north,
while the minority has a significant presence in the south.

Over the years in Goa, as the regional parties got
replaced by national parties, the vote banks also
shifted in the north from the Maharashtrawadi
Gomantak Party (MGP) to the BJP and in the south
from United Goans Party (UGP) to the Congress.

In 2004, the Congress failed to win back its bastion in South
Goa as the seat fell to the Congress rebel candidate
Churchill Alemao. In the by-election that followed though in
South Goa, Francisco Sardinha, the present South Goa member
of Parliament, won back the citadel for his party.

The contest in both the seats was a straight fight between
the BJP and the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
combine. While the BJP put up a candidate in both the seats,
the Congress left the North Goa seat to the NCP and fielded a
candidate only in South Goa. While there were other parties
in the fray too, the principal contest was between the BJP
and the Congress-NCP alliance (Table 1). It needs to be
stressed that the margin of victories of the winning
candidates in both constituencies was very modest. This
indicates that both seats were keenly contested.

Through the Political Prism

The 2009 Lok Sabha results in Goa reinforces certain
established trends in the state and points to certain new
directions. While it reasserts the north/south divide, other
important differences can also be discerned. Though voting
appeared to be on conventional lines the reduced margin of
victories point to the attempts of both parties/alliances at
having made every effort to woo the voters.

Shripad Naik of the BJP, who retained the North Goa
seat, projected himself as the son of the soil and
skilfully employed the insider-outside factor to
his advantage. He promised to work towards giving
Goa a special status in order to attract investment
for setting up industries in the state. His rival
Jitendra Deshprabu, a senior Congressman switched
sides on the eve of the elections to contest on the
NCP ticket. He was able to give a tough fight to
         the BJP candidate.

The situation in the south was very different. Francisco
Sardinha, the Congress candidate, had to fight against all
kinds of odds -- sabotages, challenges and rivalries within
his party and its ally the NCP. In critical assembly segments
within this South Goa Lok Sabha constituency, which were
considered as bastions of important Congress-NCP alliance
leaders, the party candidate did not do very well.2

The politics of internal rivalry was an offshoot of the
struggle between the Congress strongman of the south --
Churchill Alemao and the Congress candidate Fransisco
Sardinha. Churchill Alemao felt that the high command had let
him down by denying the South Goa ticket to his daughter and
giving it to his rival. This triggered off a spate of
infighting in the party with charges and counter charges
being levelled.

It was the intervention of the Congress state general
secretary Hariprasad that brought a public truce between the
warring factions. Observers of the election campaign in South
Goa noticed that Churchill Alemao was not very active in the
party campaign. This explains the reduced margin of victory
for the Congress candidate in this seat.

Subject: [Goanet] Garbage Disposal

Goa which prides it's self of a very high percentage of literacy is
unfortunately, way below as far as civic sense is concerned, we Goans just don't
care about the unwarranted waste that we produce interms of garbage, and I see
no change in attitude in the near future as well, the only solution to this
problem as I see it, is, hit them where it hurts and that means hitting their
pockets, like in Europe and America charge for the garbage produced and more
for the toxic and plastic. Hold each citizen responsible for the waste,
societies for the buildings, community centers for their blocks, you will see
garbage reduced to a bare minimum in no time. We Goans have this habit of
picking up anything and everything without much of a consideration which in the
end increases the volume of garbage.

Ask our Goans who have migrated to other land, how precise they are while pick
up things to make sure that they don't end up paying more than the necessary for
the garbage, I am sure it must have been difficult initially but now they are
surely accustomed to the western way of life. People will grumble but in the end
they'll realize that they have to pay the price for their pathetic civic sense.

Here in Dubai as well, even though there are bins for different types of waste
materials, nobody bothers but then all the garbage collected is taken to a
municipal depot and processed into fertilizer for the lush greens that have been
converted from the scorching deserts but we are charged for the water used as
well for the water going down the drain, waste water, the principal is, the more
water you use the more water you waste, so people have become wise and the taps
flow only when it is absolutely necessary. It is mostly when it hurts the
pockets that people are forced to think.

The garden pit is a good idea.

Goa Federation of Mines Affected People (GOAMAP) strongly condemns police
action on people protesting against transportation of ore from Sesa Goa mining
company in Usgao, Ponda on 12th October 2009.

Usgao villagers had created blockade of transportation of mining trucks plying
from British corporate Vedanta owned Sesa Goa mine at Condli for one week
before Police action was enforced arresting 157 protestors.

Few centuries ago one British company known as ‘East India Company’ entered
India for business and ended up ruling the country. Today another British
company known as ‘Vedanta’ has purchased Sesa Goa and Dempo mining companies
and already using Goa Police to clear roads for itself.

GOAMAP urges Goa Government not to use public-funded Goa police force to defend
private interests of any of the mining companies in Goa.

Flood victim to Guv, what's the use of spending money
on your visit to Canacona?

There is a lot of truth in this man’s talk

Believe me or not, I too wanted to write a few lines on
yesterday’s Governor’ visit to Canacona.

A visit, at whose cost?

Transport alone cost me about Rs.2,500 on my yeterday’s visit.
It was a non-ac taxi, covering around 250 kms of mileage (to and fro)

Imagine, how much the Guv’s visit must have cost. you and me?
There were in all 10 vehicles plus one Fire brigade and an ambulance.

There is a lot to be learnt from this video (NT).
Including the security issues.
Check how the guys were trying to stop the man but
could not in front of camera.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVJoWQikeMA

The man even asked the Guv,
what is the point of you coming here spending
a  lot of money on transport etc?
We don’t even have a house to live nor  have any clothing etc
We know we will get help but when? After our death?

The man or the victim appears to have a good knowledge of
Hindi and English e.g. ‘Colleagues’, ‘What is there?’ etc

The man got Rs,10,000 form Guv’s pocket

All this in front  of a media Camera..

Crime on the rise in Goa

Four dead bodies in forty eight hours, one male and three females, is this a
record of some sorts ? Crime is certainly on a steep rise in Goa, and the
lethargic attitude of our men in uniform does not warrant any hope that, things
will turn around for the better, in the minds of the general public. Just on the
heels of the Mahanand saga, more suspected murders are reported by the day, and
the men in uniform do not seem to have a clue, lost as ever before, which gives
rise to the one question, should the general public be concerned about their
safety ? Have we any faith left in our men in uniform ?

It is very disturbing to note that the list of unsolved murders is ever
increasing by the day and it won't be long before some one from our own family
becomes the victim and are faced with dilemma of holding the ever growing tiger
by it's tail. It is not very clear to figure out, if the murderers are far too
clever than our police to leave any clues behind or our men in uniform too dumb
to see the clues that are left around.

Mahanand went on a killing spree for more than ten years killing 16 women, could
be more and yet the police did not catch him, it was only when his girlfriend
lodged a complaint of physical harassment and blackmail that the "Pandora's Box"
was opened, other wise the killing spree would have surely continued and our men
in uniform would have been "none the wiser".

People who are fighting for their rights and against the atrocities of the
miners and builders, are at once taken in to custody, intimidated, harassed and
even threatened with encounter deaths, so how come our elite local "Gestapo"
come "a cropper short" when it comes to solving crimes like murder and theft ?
Food for thought isn't it ?

No Question Of Returning Mother Teresa’s Remains To Albania: Indian Govt.

By SAR NEWS

NEW DELHI (SAR NEWS) – With Albania, the country of origin of Mother
Teresa, clamouring for the saint’s mortal remains to be returned to
it, India October 13 rejected the demand saying Teresa was an Indian
citizen.

According to media reports, an official of the external affairs
ministry said Mother Teresa was an Indian citizen and there was no
question of returning her remains to Albania, the country where ‘the
saint of the gutters’ was born August 26, 1910.

“Mother Teresa was an Indian citizen. There is nothing more to be
said,” the Indo-Asian News Service cited the official as saying.

The decision was expectedly widely welcomed by the people across India
where the Nobel Prize winner spent her life working for the welfare of
the poor and tending to the abandoned sick and dying, mainly in the
City of Kolkata.

Welcoming India’s decision, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India
(CBCI) said the Church would want her remains to be in the country.
“The Catholic Church gladly welcomes the response of the external
affairs ministry that Mother Teresa was fully an Indian citizen. We
would want her remains to be in India,” said CBCI spokesman, Divine
Word Father Babu Joseph.

“Mother Teresa had all through her life and activities built a strong
bond with all sections of Indian society and she is respected by all
in the country. And this was the filial relationship between the
Mother and Indians, which cannot be overlooked.”

Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s government had on October 10
asked India to return the mortal remains of the Roman Catholic nun by
the 100th anniversary of her birth in August next year.

Berisha had also said, according to media reports, that Albania has
started negotiations with the Indian government, which “will be
intensified this year”.

MoC yet to receive request: Meanwhile, The Missionaries of Charity
(MoC) congregation, founded by Mother Teresa, said October 11 that it
had not received any request from any quarter for transfer of the
saint’s remains to Albania.

Salesian priest Father Robin Gomes, who ministers to the nuns in the
Auxilium Parish in Kolkata, said: “Unless we receive any specific
request from any quarter in this regard, we cannot comment.”

He said the MoC headquarters in Kolkata would not probably agree to
any request for transfer of Mother Teresa’s remains outside of her
tomb, which is situated in a room on the ground floor of the Mother
House in Kolkata. “It will not be fair to remove her remains from
there,” Gomes said.

Tiatr Academy Goa

PRESS NOTE for favour of publication

TAG to preserve Tiatr Literature

Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) has observed that although thousands of tiatr scripts
are
written and staged, there are very few tiatr scripts published in the book
form. TAG
intends to preserve tiatr literature for posterity. This can be done by
publishing
books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without
music scores. TAG, therefore will publish books of tiatr scripts, lyrics of
songs,
one act plays, etc in book form. Interested script writers and lyricists are
requested to send three copies each of the scripts of tiatr or lyrics of songs
to
TAG on or before 15th November, 2009.

  Promotion of Tiatr music

The TAG has observed that the number of musicians playing blowing
instruments
such as Trumpet and Saxphone is decreasing day by day and that these two
instruments
are very important in the music of the Tiatr. In view of this the TAG has
formulated
a scheme to encourage youth and others to learn to play blowing instruments
particularly Trumpet and Saxphone by providing them with financial assistance.

Documentation of the history of Tiatr

TAG felt that there is an urgent need to document the history of Goan
Tiatr. It
was also strongly felt that priority must be given to oral documentation with
the
help of old Tiatr artistes who are still living.

Hence TAG has decided to document the history and experiences in the field of
Tiatr
by interviewing old artistes of Tiatr which includes writers, directors,
actors,
singers, musicians, persons involved in stage setting, light effects,
background
music, etc. etc. DVDs. It was also resolved to document the history of tiatr
by
publishing books on history, critical appreciation and on any other topics
related
to Tiatr, its song and music.

Persons interested in taking up the work of documentation may contact the
Member Secretary of TAG on phone number 9823375530 or the President on phone
no.

Congratulations to Goanetter Carmen Miranda on this honour:
http://www.environmentaljournalists.org/Carmen_Miranda_of_India.htm

INTERNATIONAL GREEN PEN AWARD WINNER - 2009
Carmen Miranda - UK

As Director of the Asia Regional programme of Panos Institute in the
90s, she was responsible for developing, designing and executing a
series of dynamic and creative training programmes and fellowships for
journalists in South Asia and Indonesia to create awareness and
encourage reporting on environmental issues. The programmes were also
designed to promote regional exchange of information on the
environment, cooperation and understanding and to identify common
regional environmental concerns such as the issue of water for
example, which was covered extensively and from different perspectives
across the region through Panos fellowship programmes. So many of the
Panos Fellowships involved travelling to and reporting from
neighbouring countries creating a network and valuable links among
environmental journalists in the region.
Having travelled extensively across the region, she quickly became
aware of the fact that there were vast differences in terms of need
for extra training in some of the countries compared to others, and
proceeded to provide what she found necessary to raise standards,
while also regularly lobbied the editors of the main newspapers in
South Asia to give space to environment reports.
Carmen Miranda also keen to find new undiscovered talent in aspiring
young journalists, and give them a fair chance to prove their
abilities. As a result, through competitions for fellowships she
developed especially in Bangladesh and Nepal in cooperation with the
Bangladesh and Nepal Press Institutes a whole new young generation of
talented journalists, both male and female were discovered and trained
to report on the environment.
Carmen Miranda worked closely with Press Institutes in Nepal,
Bangladesh and Indonesia, helping to develop the skills of a large
group of journalists who as a result dedicated themselves to reporting
on environment and sustainable development issues; she pioneered the
first environmental journalism training programme for women in Nepal
and Bangladesh, which for the first time put women in those countries
in equal position to compete with their male colleagues for Panos
fellowships. Senior female journalists from India and Sri Lanka gave
the training courses and were role models.
She expanded environmental reporting from English into 14 vernacular
languages across the region and enabled the production of monthly wall
newspapers for villagers in several countries. Convinced All India
Radio to participate in Panos workshops on environmental reporting,
and as a result, radio producers from across India took part in
ground breaking workshops in which for the first time ever two major
forces working in parallel (All India Radio and environmental NGOs)
met and cooperated for the first time.Carmen Miranda did similar
exercises in Indonesia and Pakistan and organised and led the first
ever group of 24 senior environmental journalists and water experts
from Nepal, India and Bangladesh in a journey down the Ganges up to
the Bay of Bengal , to investigate the environmental and water sharing
conflicts between those 3 countries. In 1994 with the help of a Ford
Foundation Fellowship, She launched a journalistic investigation of
the Flood Action Plan in Bangladesh involving 14 local journalists
that resulted in the influential book Rivers of Life, published by
Panos and BCAS which changed the course of that mega project. Carmen
Miranda initiated the decentralization process of Panos, which
culminated in the establishment of the first Panos South Asia in
Kathmandu.
Born in Goa, India in 1943, Carmen Miranda studied in the UK and a
Master of Arts (M.A.) in International Communications and Development,
City University, London, UK 1997 and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art
and Design (Graphic Design), Ravensbourne College of Art and Design,
Kent, UK 1971.
Carmen Miranda an unusual and varied carrier in the communications
field that expanded into 10 countries (6 in Asia and 3 in Africa and
UK) and that ranged from an award winner designer, to TV documentary
making, to university lecturer in UK on International Communications
and Development, and Brand Consultancy at Wolff Olins, which is
recognised as the most influential international brand consultancy, to
working as an interpreter for asylum seekers from war thorn countries
in Africa with London's Boroughs of Islington, Haringey and Barnet
and so on. In early 70s afte

The brand ambassador for East Bengal shall now make an appearance on the big
screen
in a Bengalli movie where he would play himself. Alvito D'Cunha has been
approached
by a Tollywood director to make a special appearance in the movie called
'Aakashchua'
which means to touch the sky.

"I have three scenes in the movie. Rituparna Sengupta is the lead actress and
another new heroine is also part of the group," said Alvito excitedly.

The Goan star was approached by the director, S.Chakrabarty following his
return
from the pre-season camp at Jagannath Puri.

"Since the muhurat (auspicious time for a start) was on Monday, the news
finally
came out. I was supposed to have my scenes in this week but since the ground
isn't
green at this point, we shall shoot sometime in the next month."

Alvito isn't new to acting as he has acted in several one act plays in his
hometown
during festivals.

"I love acting and always would participate in plays during Christmas and other
festivals for the Church. I hope everything goes well."

The former Salgaocar player is pleased with his form and was relieved after
scoring
a goal with his right foot.

"I scored in the ASEAN Cup final with my right foot. The goal in Mumbai against
Mahindra United was great as it came at a time when criticism was heavy. If I
can
score with my weaker foot, for sure I can with my stronger one," said the
optimistic
winger.

Alvito has the opportunity to star for his club when they take on arch rivals
Mohun
Bagan on the 25th of this month.

Thomas Stephens: Asiatic Society, Mumbai, and XCHR, Porvorim

Yesterday I was in Fort, Mumbai, and took the chance to visit the
Asiatic Society of Bombay (formerly the Royal Asiatic Society, Bombay
Chapter) and the Public Library adjacent to it.

In both libraries I found A.K. Priolkar's, The Printing Press in
India, with its English translation of J.H. da Cunha Rivara's History
of the Konkani language. Unfortunately, and very disappointingly,
Theophilus Lobo, who translated this essay from the original
Portuguese, thought it fit not to reproduce the essay in its entirety.
So while the Censures and Licences are mentioned, the complete texts
of these - and J.L. Saldanha says he got these texts from da Cunha
Rivara's essays - are not given. Which is a real pity. Now we will
have to find the Portuguese original. Which I suppose should be either
at the Heras Institute, St Xavier's College, Mumbai, or else at the
Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Porvorim, or at the Central
Library, Panjim.

Ahmedabad Journal

The Butterfly City

Late on a moonlit night, Ashish and his wife Nicole, my niece, drove me along
the
newly-built embankment on Ahmedabad's Sabarmati River. Flowing north to south,
the
river roughly divides the old city with its rich tradition and heritage
architecture
and the modern suburban development on its west side. As we drove along the
river's
edge, I marveled at the sheer beauty of the waterway in full flow. I lived in
the
city for three years in the 1960s and my parents made their home there. So I
have a
proprietary hometown interest.

When I lived in Ahmedabad, the Sabarmati held no water. Its banks were
slum-ridden.
In the middle, you had these wonderful sights of people drying their colorful
clothes and donkeys laden with sand to fuel the furious building activity on
the
west side of the river. Every now and then, the river would become flooded as
the
barrages upstream released water in the monsoon. By and large though, the river
ran
dry and the many bridges across it seemed pointless.

All that changed in May 1997. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation
was
set up under the stewardship of then chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela to
develop a
plan for the riverfront. Twelve years later, Vaghela's dream is taking shape.
The
river is full now, fed by the water of the Narmada Dam. When the project is
completed, Ahmedabad will join Goa's capital city Panjim as the only other
riverside
city in India to develop its waterfront.

The riverfront development in Ahmedabad is a huge and sophisticated urban
renewal
project. When it is complete, it will transform this city that is already fond
of
the good life. Traditionally known for its parsimonious ways, Ahmedabad has
changed
over the years to become possibly the most global city in India; not because of
multinational firms as in Gurgaon but mostly because it has a huge connection
to the
US, where many of its denizens reside. This least Western city in India is
curiously
its most American city.

As such, Ahmedabad is truly egalitarian. On a recent flight from Bombay, I
bumped
into my friend Sanjay Lalbhai, scion of the city's illustrious Lalbhai family
and
the head of Arvind Mills, traveling with me on an all-cattle-class Jet Konnect
flight. His family is, among other things, a benefactor of the city's famed
Indian
Institute of Management and the renowned CEPT University.

In an India of new and in-your-face wealth, Sanjay remains an icon of
understated
old wealth: unassuming and courteous, wedded to larger development causes such
as
higher education. He does this not as part of some PR-driven corporate social
responsibility program; he is convinced, like his forebears, that a
publicly-traded
corporation has a duty to the community.

People like Sanjay and a relatively enlightened bureaucracy have transformed
Ahmedabad from a moffusil place into India's most dynamic city: its new Bus
Rapid
Transit System makes its Delhi counterpart look like a third-world system; the
city's
airport, roads and its smooth power supply make it closer to global standards
than
any other city in India.

Historically, the laughing stock of India's western provinces, Ahmedabad today
is
the face of new India. Never mind Bombay, people commended even Surat, Baroda
and
Poona over Ahmedabad. But the city will have the last laugh. It is set to
emerge,
with its mixture of schlock and exquisite architecture, superb infrastructure
and
thriving consumerism, as India's premier city in the 21st century.

This does not mean that Ahmedabad is suddenly a pretty city; far from it. Flat,
featureless and dusty, it grew privately. Builders from the north transformed
this
once genteel city into a treeless monstrosity of ugly multistory buildings.
Over the
years, conscientious civic authorities decided to take the city back. So you
have
this unusual combination of ugly private buildings, superb public architecture
and
now, sophisticated public spaces with a well-designed bus rapid transit
corridor and
a cleverly designed ring road with flyovers that work.

The expressway that links Ahmedabad to Baroda is a marvelous piece of road
engineering that makes the Delhi-Gurgaon highway look like a country road in
Burkina
Faso. It runs about 100 kilometers, a distance that can be traversed in 55
minutes.
The city's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport makes the

Congratulations to Goanetter Carmen Miranda on this honour:

Carmen
Miranda  initiated the decentralization process of Panos, which
culminated in the establishment of the first Panos South Asia in
Kathmandu.
Born in Goa, India in 1943, Carmen Miranda studied in the UK and  a
Master of Arts (M.A.) in International Communications and Development,
City University, London, UK 1997 and Bachel

[Goanet] Diwali: Celebrating Traditions for Cultural Integration

As a little kid, I virtually grew up making effigies of the demon
“Narkasura” in the days leading up to Diwali. The tradition is hugely
popular in Goa, and more particularly in the streets of St. Inez where
I grew up. The tradition is unique to the whole of India. Every year,
we spend a few late nights on the roads, in our pursuit to get the
demon ready on time.

>From building the structure and stuffing him with hay to stitching of
sacks and painting and decoration, we take great pains to make the
effigy look ugly and menacing, and yet so very artistic and beautiful.
Our localities – like many others - are illuminated with attractive
glowing lights, giving the whole city a festive look. On the eve of
Diwali, almost every city resident comes out of his or her house to
witness the hundreds of “Narkasurs” displayed in the various nooks and
corners, thereby giving us our greatest satisfaction.

This is one occasion the children from the whole of the neighborhood
get – to meet each other, to spend some moments together, and have
great fun in the process. Joining us in our traditions are not just
other Hindu friends, but also Christians and Muslims. Along with a
Harish, a Shekhar or a Mayur, we also have a Tony, a Rafael or an
Abdul. The tradition, in all its glory, has thus become the
cornerstone of secularism, an occasion where the young and the old,
the boys and the girls, the rich and the poor, from different castes,
states and religions, meet, joining hands with one another, sharing in
each others joys and happiness. What a wonderful sign for communal
harmony.

"Unity in Diversity" has been the distinctive feature of our Indian
culture. We are a land of variety. Our Country is like a whole
continent; with so many lifestyles, so many languages, so many
different cultures and traditions. To use Mark Twain’s words, “India
is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the
mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand
mother of tradition. Our most valuable and most astrictive materials
in the history of man are treasured up in India only!”

However, there are many challenges that lie before India today. Our
Country is slowly and steadily being torn apart by vested interests,
by political and religious figures in their predatory pursuit for
power. Today, we are witnessing so many riots and so many instances of
communal strife, violence and tension.

The Country can learn lessons from Goa. If the Christians in Goa
celebrate Diwali and Holi with the Hindus, the Hindus celebrate
Carnival and Christmas with them. The communities together celebrate
Id. In a world so divided on ethnic and religious grounds, one way to
eliminate these divisions is to participate in each others cultures,
festivals and traditions. In Goa, there is a complete cultural
integration and thanks to practices like these, we are now the perfect
illustration of peace and harmony.

The land of ‘Unity in diversity’ must go back to its basics and learn
from such benchmarks. If our Countrymen, so diverse, could fight the
battle for freedom unitedly, there is no reason why we cannot stay
united again to transform India into a World Superpower!

May we be inspired by the Festival of Lights so that, in the true
spirits of the festival, good triumphs over Evil.

A happy Diwali to one and all!

Cheers
Sandeep Heble
