[Goanet] Herald editorial on Goa bomb blasts
Herald, Editorial, 19 Oct 2009 Disingenuous defence Lightning doesn’t strike twice. But, in the case of the Sanatan Sanstha, apparently it does. For, it says it has ‘nothing’ to do with the bomb blast, just as it had ‘nothing’ to do with the blast last year in Thane. When activists of the Sanstha planted a bomb at the Gadkari Rangayatan auditorium in Thane, Maharashtra, exploded injuring seven persons, six activists of the Sanstha, who were also members of the Hindu Janajagriti Samiti (HJS), were arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad. The bomb was planted because a Marathi play, ‘Aamhi Paachpute’, was to be performed at the auditorium. The Sanatan Sanstha had denounced the play, saying it ‘denigrated’ Hindu gods and goddesses, and demanded that it be stopped. The play’s producers refused to stop showing it. The response? Not one bomb but two. The other bomb, planted at the Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium at Vashi, Navi Mumbai, where the play was also to be performed, was found before it exploded and defused. A third bomb - planted outside a cinema theatre in Panvel that was showing the Bollywood film ‘Jodhaa-Akbar’, which the Sanatan Sanstha had also denounced as ‘denigrating’ Hindus, exploded but thankfully did not hurt anyone. In Goa, the Sanatan Sanstha has been campaigning against the Goan tradition of building and burning Narkasurs at the time of Diwali for years now. They say making such huge effigies of the demon king is nothing but the glorification of evil. Goans are proud of their traditions, and have mostly ignored the Sanstha’s protests. In this lies the genesis of the bomb that exploded, killing as if in divine retribution the two terrorist Narkasurs that wanted to massacre innocent Goans, spread panic and trigger a communal riot in Margao. Thankfully, alert youth discovered a similar bomb planted on a truck that was headed for the Vasco Narkasur competition, threw it on the road and alerted the police, who defused it. The terrorists who were carrying the bomb were members of both the Sanatan Sanstha and the Hindu Janajagriti Samiti. So was the owner of the scooter in which the bomb was being carried. Yet, yesterday’s ‘Sanatan Prabhat’, the newspaper that represents the views of the Sanatan Sanstha, says that its activist Malgonda Patil (28) died in an bomb explosion engineered by ‘unknown elements’. That is exactly what the Sanstha said after the Thane blasts. That is why we ask: Does lightning strike twice? Similar bombs. Similar circumstances. Similar tactics. Similar situation. Is it a matter of sheer coincidence that while those blasts occurred in the areas around the Sanstha’s Panvel Ashram, and the perpetrators of the blasts were living in the ashram, these blasts occurred in Goa, and one of the perpetrators was living in the Sanstha’s Ramnathi Ashram? This time, the evidence is not merely circumstantial. The police have recovered some circuits and timing devices from the ashram that are similar to those found in a bag on the scooter that contained dynamite sticks, detonators, circuit boxes, batteries, remote control, stones and chemicals, which were defused by the bomb disposal squad before the police took them away. Hopefully, with the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), the Sanstha’s disingenuous defence will be put to the test. Even more amusing is the angry statement of the Hindu Janajagriti Samiti (HJS) that it is in no way involved in these blasts. The fact is that the Sanatan Sanstha is the main constituent unit of the HJS. Both the terrorists who died in the blast have actively participated in the HJS’s programmes. It is best that the HJS reviews its ties with the Sanatan Sanstha if it wants to be free of this taint. The Goa Police have been under intense pressure this last week, with 10 bodies being discovered, of which eight were murders. But it has acquitted itself admirably, solving most of the cases within days. We wish it keeps up the good work. -- Whatever it is, I'm against it -- Groucho Marx
[Goanet] Marathas are not ( or have never been ) Goans
It is not my intention to get involved in this debate other than to explain to fellow Goans what is exactly meant by the word Marathas (Marattas). The Marathi speaking areas of Western India are now known as Maharashtra and hence its people are correctly known as Maharashtrians. Like the influential Catholics of Goa who are now not more than 30 % of the total Goa's population, Marattas too are an influential minority in Maharashtra. But then who are Marattas ? They are the sturdy farmers of the Deccan region of Maharashtra comprising of Goa sized districts like Nasik, Aurangabad, Ahmadnagar, Pune, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur.. Deccan soil is not that rich as Konkan's and this region often gets scanty rainfall from SW monsoons. Hence these farmers have somehow managed to eke out a living from this inhospitable soil. These Marattas are like Chhaddis (Vaisya -farmers ) of Goa. Shivaji organized these peasants into a rag tag army that played havoc in the rest of India and in the process created a Maratta empire that stretched from Peshawar ( in modern Pakistan ) to Kanya Kumari in the south There are other influential minorities like Deshasta ( Desh ) brahmins of Deccan region, and Konkanastha brahmins mainly Chitpavan brahmins who succeeded Shivaji in ruling the Maratta empire as Peshwes (Prime Ministers) Just as in Goa the non-maratta and non-brahmin population are in absolute majority. Re: [Goanet] Reports on Sanatan... and the Margao blast (long)
Dear FN, We must thank God and I really believe it is an act of God, because one exploded prematurely and the other was detected in time before it exploded. Because, from the first set of victims (those two carried the device in the scooter) gave away the identity of the organization they belonged to. If the bombs had exploded after they were planted, it would have been a difficult task for the investigators, and meanwhile, wrong community could have been blamed/implicated. Thanks to Mother Mary and St. Frances Xavior with whose intersession I believe this miracle occured. I hope the source of material for the explosives is found and this type of occurance does not happen again in our beloved Goa. M.D

[Goanet] Terrorism – Monday-muse (19 Oct ’09)
MONDAY MUSE (19 October 2009) TERRORISM The annual general body of the Parent Teachers Association provides occasion to voice concerns. At my daughter’s school, a parent, Mr. Zaidi spoke on the threatening trepidation of terrorism. He made a pertinent point that terrorists were not just those who endangered lives... they included all those whose diminutive acts led to eventual destruction and devastation. Zaidi spelt out the seemingly innocuous acts that paved the path to peril. Motorists who exceeded speed limit restrictions endangered the safety of the bridge and therefore they were indulging in terrorism. Citizens who did not participate in the responsible management of garbage were pushing society to a deadly epidemic and hence they were fostering a terrorist act. Similarly, environment polluters were jeopardizing lives and foisting terrorism. Zaidi’s analysis made a pertinent point. Terrorism arises in a self-centred mind clouded by a criminal contempt for collective responsibilities... where narrow motives eclipse the common good. Every time, we involve in acts that eventually lead to the endangerment of lives, we are becoming active contributors to the inhuman acts of terrorism. More often than not, it is the governing authorities and promoters of irresponsible and self-interested ‘development’ that contribute to the build-up of deadly acts of destruction. However, It is not enough to be a good person… we must be better at ensuring zero tolerance for all acts that lead to eventual terrorism. We must ask ourselves: Do we directly or indirectly support those who in the name of development wreck destruction of lives, lands and livelihoods? Do we overtly or covertly support religious fundamentalists who use the cloak of spiritualism to promote hate and contempt that eventually leads to rioting and violence? Or do we just stand and stare in insensitive indifference? To BE BETTER at tackling the menace of terrorism... Let’s connect citizenship with responsive humanism! - Pravin K. [Goanet] Weekend Short Story #4
Weekend Short Story #4 === Tales Of The Unexpected === ADEUS Nachinola, Goa, December 2006. She met him on the internet, as these things often do nowadays. Her heart fluttered at the little Goan village library computer, first because she was almost thirty, an old maid by Goan standards, and second because after a month online, she found he was real. He was forty and lived with his mother in Mumbai, not so far away, and when she phoned, his halting bass tones were steadily reassuring. They exchanged pictures and the streaming words softly turned into love. Except that the phone-line kept worsening over the four-month monsoon until she could barely hear his voice, and so they were back to email. His messages began to grow in ardour and she responded likewise. His had a sense of urgency though, encouraging her to develop her artistic talents, predicting a great future for her. Her? Surely he meant...them? Was there...another? Still he professed undying love, and though he never seemed to answer her questions, he did write her everyday. At Christmas when his mail faltered, she said it was now or never, and took a train to Mumbai. She found his apartment, and his handsome old mother welcomed her. He wasn't there, she said, had slipped away. When night came and they were alone, the mother broke. He'd been terminally ill she said, and spent the monsoon writing hundreds of messages for her. You mean...? the girl's heart filled with dread. Yes, Mabel, wept the mother, I've been forwarding one every day to you since September. He wanted you to be strong, always. [Goanet] Ban Sanathan Sanstha - Malegao to Margao
To , The editor Herald Publications Goa * KINDLY PUBLISH AS LETTER TO THE EDITOR* ** Dear Sir, the Bomb Blast at Margao is an eyeopener to all Goans - it is a harbinger of things to come and happen in Goa. First and foremost how were these thugs allowed to operate from Goa under the guise of a social organisation supposed to be committed to the welfare of society . How were they allowed to acquire such big tracts of prime Goan land at Ponda and conduct their clandestine operations from here inspite of being implicated in the Malegao bomb blasts . Now they had planned to plant bombs in Goa and create chaos and communal strife . why did they target Margao only - is it because the CM hails from that constituency. Maybe some other political organisations are involved in this whole conspiracy . Lucky for us the blast took the life of the mole himself . But I call upon the police to be extra vigilant regarding all migrants and the functioning of rightwing organisations like Sangathan Sanstha - who are trying to copy the SS thugs of the erstwhile Nazis . Police should now take care during all congregations of people especially melas , feasts like Old Goa feast ,etc. Government should ban these organisations who are extremists and communal as the future already looks bleak for Goa. Police should also verify if these elements had any hand in the temple and church desecrations that happen so often. All those funding such organisations should also be questioned and all culprits brought to book.Functioning of Organisations like Sangathan Sanstha, Bajrang Dal , Hindu Janajagruti etc should be looked into as now it is evident that they do not seek any welfare or good of the people except want to create strife and communal disharmony. *Col.Cyril P.D'Souza ( Retd.)* #401 KHH PH 11 Gauravaddo - Calangute Gauravaddo

[Goanet] Goa forms SIT to crack blast case ... political patronage ... (Deccan Herald)
Margao attack: Pune ATS to assist probe Goa forms SIT to crack blast case Margao, Oct 18, DH News Service : A special investigative team (SIT) of the Goa police has been deputed to track down the two Sanathan Sansthan activists, who, the police suspect, assembled the crude bomb that went off at Margao on Friday night killing a Sanathan man, Malgonda Patil, and injuring another activist, Yogesh Naik. The police said the improvised explosive device (IED) had been put together by technical experts. Patil hailed from Sangli, but had been living in the Goa Sanathan ashram at Ramnathi, Ponda for four years, working in its administration. He and Naik have been listed as accused in the case. “We are looking for a Sangli connection in this case,” Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik told Deccan Herald. The police said the markings on the gelatin stick gave them a fair idea that they had been procured from outside Goa. A team of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Pune, also arrived here on Sunday to assist the Goa police in the investigation. Five persons from the Sanathan’s Ramnathi ashram, which has become the national headquarters of the right-wing group, were interrogated by the ATS at the police headquarters in Margao. They include ashram administrator Virendra Marathe and Sanathan Prabhat's group editor Prithviraj Hazare. The state police also searched the office of Sanathan’s Marathi newspaper at Nesar, Margao. The police said the Sanathan men had planned to plant four bombs around Margao during the Deepavali festivities to cause maximum damage during the crowded evening procession. The intention was to cause communal tension, DIG Ravindra Yadav said. In a cruel twist of fate, one of the IEDs went off as Patil and Naik were parking the scooter just a few metres away from Grace church. Two other similar devices were found near the scooter later. Just a lane away, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and South Goa SP Allen De Sa were on the dais watching the floats. This happened at 9:45 pm. An hour later, an alert driver watching another procession at Sancoale, about 10 km away, found another ticking IED planted in his pick-up cabin. He threw the bag into the field and informed the police. The police managed to get crucial details of the Sanathan connection from Patil’s dying statement. He told the police that he lived in the ashram, was from Sangli and had been to Pune, Thane and Malegao. His mobile number was traced to the ashram. Naik, who is in hospital in a critical condition, is a teacher in a school for deaf and dumb children run by a Hindu organisation. * * * Minister’s wife runs body’s finances Political patronage helped Sansthan’s expansion Ramnathi, Ponda, Oct 18, DH News Service : Sanathan Sansthan, a right-wing Hindu outfit which has been linked by the Anti-Terrorism Squad to the 2006 Malegaon blasts, has grown from strength to strength in Goa riding on the goodwill and financial support of the admirers of the ideology it professes to propagate. From a small indistinct office in Ponda just three years ago, its ashram in Ramnathi, which is in the religious and cultural heart of Hindu Goa, has blossomed into its national headquarters. This has not come without open political patronage. Goa’s Transport Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar says unabashedly that his entire family is involved with the Sanathan’s activities and the good work it has been doing in spreading the ‘dharma prasad’. Dhavlikar told Deccan Herald at his home in Bandora, located near the ashram, that his wife runs the accounts of the Sansthan and every member of his family is involved with the ashram in one way or other. Only he and his brother Deepak, also an MGP MLA, are not directly linked, he said. He wants proof to the Sanathan’s links to Friday’s blast in Margao before action being taken against them. “I don’t see any reason why my wife and other members of the family should stay away from the Sansthan, unless the police have sufficient evidence,” he says. He doesn’t see any reason to resign from the government to let investigations go on unhindered. “I am not interfering, neither have I called to police to find out the course of investigations,” he says. Dhavlikar claims he is in no way involved in financing Sanathan’s activities. The police searched the ashram on Saturday and questioned its administrators on Dhavlikars wife’s links to the organisation’s finances. Police said they had found incriminating material at the ashram like an electrical circuit and timers. Two room-mates of Malgonda Patil the suspected perpetrator who died in the blast, were taken in for questioning. There were 176 people in the ashram, including three French nationals who were staying there without informing the police, the police said. A spokesman for the ashram said the Sanathan’s activists had been victims of a bomb planted by someone else. * * * 'Transport minister should quit' PONDA, DHNS: Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik said Transport Minister

HERALD REPORTER Punish Sanatan men if guilty, says Parrikar HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, OCT 18 Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar on Sunday said there was so much wrong information floated by responsible people about the Margao bomb blast he feared the case, like so many others, will die its own death. Without directly blaming the Home Minister Ravi Naik, Parrikar said as per media coverage the former has been in the forefront to give information about the scooter involved in the blast. “The moment the minister came to know the scooter belonged to a relative of his bete noire in the ministry, he was happy to give that information to the media. This is wrong; I have come to know that the two-wheeler was transferred by the relative in the name of the person to whom he sold the vehicle two to three months back,” he observed. Parrikar said “politicians should not give political colour to the issue. There is lot of wrong information being floated around. I fear justice will not be done to the case.” Basing his fears on earlier cases where he mentioned nothing happened, he cited, “The sword seizure case has not been chargesheeted. It has been 18 months now. The truck in which the swords were seized was registered on a bogus ID which is very serious. The police should have gone deeper.” “An accused was caught for the temple desecrations. But what has happened. Are the Goa Police and the politicians interested?” he chided. Parrikar said after the Margao blast it appeared the police had no concrete security and evacuation plan. “The lack of training came to the fore because police failed to disperse people. Even after the blast narkasur celebrations were on for some time,” he mentioned. He said, “Once a blast takes place the place has to be immediately cordoned off and checked by the bomb disposal squad to declare it as safe. But we saw senior police officers, the CM, Fatorda MLA Damu Naik and others making an appearance at the spot, which could have been dangerous if there was another bomb at the spot.” He said the police have to go to the root of the case. “The BJP is clear, the guilty should be punished. If Sanatan Sanstha members are involved punish them,” he stated. Parrikar also chided the police stating there was complete intelligence failure. He said four youth who were responsible for the Panjim murders were from Chimbel where police fear to go because of their political masters. One senior officer has confessed police are scared to go to Chimbel because of political pressure, he stated. _ Windows Live: Make it easier for your friends to see what you’re up to on Facebook. http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/see-it-in-action/social-network-basics.aspx?ocid=PID23461::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-xm:SI_SB_2:092009

Re: [Goanet] Narkasur night -informal ruminations
Iggy, I think you are mixing up the issue of communalism with the anti-migrant sentiment. The Margao issue is a complex mix of communalism and possibly a group straddling Goa and Maharashtra (with its national headquarters in Goa, incidentally). To my mind, the anti-migrant chauvinism is a red-herring. Besides Goa has itself been long made up of migrants of diverse kinds. If the caste conflict we've seen dominate Goa in the 20th century was not a jostling in a way over 'insider-outsider' definitions, then what was it? Isn't anti-Hindu bias in the Old Conquest a kind of anti-migrant labelling too? And aren't we running into definitions of who is an insider today, when communalism targets Catholics here too? Once we enter this game, we're on dangerous grounds over definitions. Some groups (including the most vocal) have settled in Goa maybe eight centuries ago, that is, just three or so centuries before the Portuguese. So, whom do we accept as an insider and whom not, and on what basis? Why is the Portuguese's invasion and invasion, but the Parushuram-led aggression and take-over of an inhabited territory not a colonisation of Goa? So, isn't this largely a matter of definition? I think Valmiki's series of articles are a good eye-opener. His arguments point out how Goa depends on migrants (I would say in the past too). But more than that, can we overlook the angle of equity and reciprocity in this entire debate. Can Goans who scour the globe deny this very right to others when it comes to their (real or imagined, because some have not been around for ages or generations) homeland? Btw, are you based in Goa or a migrant yourself? If you check around, and see what is being said by others, some of the people with the loudest anti-migrant approaches have no problem with communalism, provided it fits their own interest! Re: [Goanet] Comment
Hello Vidyadhar, Your article was true to the pint as I live in Thane City barely 2kms from Gagkari Rangayatan. What needs to be noted in the context of the Margao blast is that the Sanshta Parishad is a spent force with the Mumbai police force coming down heavily on the. So also other places in Maharashtra. The Goa Govt and its force has to nip this organization in the bud before they have another Taliban on its hands. Having friends in the Police forces we understand from them, that a quick surgical action is better than wait till gangrene sets in. The Goa Police has to be quick and ake speedy action just as the Mumbai Police caught the two murderers. More on this later . Ashley

2009/10/19 Francis Rodrigues fcarodrig...@hotmail.com I've spent time with Soter - He pretty much walks the walk, and not just talks the talk. A genuine true-blood. Gouveia for one (almost on his way to fraternize with his Taleigao Narkasur bud) could take a leaf out of Soter's book. Expending unnecessary energy on anti-BO rhetoric. Get with it gramps - do something positive for ye olde motherland - or you face the stuttering fate of Chimbelkar's finches in yr dotage! :-) FR http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ RESPONSE: Here we go again ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq59z3O38UY) bound to get a lengthy reply, which we have probably all seen before: Repetitive syndrome. The rest of us are war mongers (Iraq etc) tell lies and have no semblance of reasoning, unlike 'the lone voice on Goanet of reason, truth and shanti' ( Recently changed from peace) The proponents of War: Bush, Blair and their die hard supporters make sure their children will not join the Armed Forces and will not be put in harms way. Cherie Blair cried when her son went just down to the Road to Uni in Bristol. Tony Blair wanted to shake the hand of the father of a soldier who died -- was given short shrift. Then the was the incident of the man who threw the shoe at Bushthe sole voice prevails; we may as well pack up and go home. The Archbishop of Canterbury put these guys in their place just recently. In the meantime we have dastardly acts being committed in Goa, poetic justice then, that the perpetrators got their just deeds. Apparently the scooter was sold off, don't come looking for me seems to be the response. The scooters owner is said to be a relative of some big hob nob Politicians in Goa...let's see how far this goes. The fact of the matter is that the Politicians have been misguided by the Right Wing Hindu front. Time for them to call a spade a spade. These Right wing nuts do a lot of disservice to the majority of peace loving Hindus. Perhaps with this incident, people will not jump to conclusions as in the past, trying to lay the blame on others, in order to create communal disharmony. This is not a Hindu thing, a few nutters have no franchise to speak for the Majority. DEV BOREM KORUM.
[Goanet] Terrorism Rears It's Ugly Head In Goa
Terrorism Rears It's Ugly Head In Goa I am not at all surprised to see so much cynicism oozing out of people all around, because of the lack of action oriented governance in Goa, Goa that prided itself of being peaceful and tolerant, has seen a spate of horror and violence in Goa in the past few years, as far as I can remember, in my entire life upto the last few years, there were just two movements that shook Goa, the opinion poll and the Konkanni movement, apart form these, Goa has never seen any turmoil but now things have certainly changed, more and more murders, rapes and thefts every day, religious fanatism and bigotry, people up in arms in every corner of Goa, desecration of holy places, kidnapping, we have seen it all, in the past few years and now the one thing that we all fervently prayed not happen on Goan soil, bomb blasts, to our utter dismay, have finally happened. It had been apparent for some time and many had seen it coming as well but our security services and our politicians remained short sighted and failed to stop this sacrilege on our soil. We Goans were lucky that the innocent were spared and the perpetrators themselves became the victims of their own pathetic ideologies and fallacies. I can't help but think, will we be so lucky the next time ? As Goa continues to wallow in abject corruption and unimaginable nepotism along with inapt foresight of our corrupt politicians, Goa is most certainly making it to the top, as the hub for criminal activities, and our politicians enjoying themselves and making hay while Goa is being torn to shreds, least bothered about the status of their electorate nor their domain. As always, we try to pick up the broken pieces at the aftermath of things, but do nothing, absolutely nothing to prevent such incidents, that were seen coming. We all know that, If we leave a carcass of any animal lying around for too long, the stench only gets worse, so the best thing to do is, to either burry or burn the carcass the moment it's noticed, these radical outfits should be dealt with in the same way. The moment they start emanating, any stench of hatred or communalism or involve in acts of violence, they should be taken to task and should not be left around in the open to spread their virus of hatred. It is never difficult to achieve goals as long as one has the heart and will to do it, but unfortunately commitment is a word that cannot be associated with any of our present MLA's and Ministers. Striking moralistic postures is their favourite pass time, which apparently is a poor substitute for apt actions, which further become a ritual bereft of any substance. What Goa needs at this point in time is, Governance at it's best, dealing with the perpetrators and their organization with an iron hand indeed, and a message to the other radical sects that Goa is not a place to mess around with or a playground to display their lunatic and barbaric skills. To further avoid the reoccurrence of such incidents, we should be on our toes and try to nip at the bud, the moment such radicals try to sprout and not wait for them to bloom or spread their ugly branches and tentacles around. We Goan are surely peace loving people but we should make sure that the radicals know, that we will not tolerate anyone and everyone that tries to force Goa and Goans to deviate from our humane principals of communal harmony, peace and tolerance. [Goanet] Selma Carvalho: Who the Bleep cares about madness?
Headline: Who the Bleep cares about madness? By: Selma Carvalho Source: Goan Voice 19 October 2009 at http://goanvoice.org.uk/newsletter/2009/October/2009_October_19.html Full text: Last Friday I attended World Mental Health Day, 2009, in Uxbridge London. I wasnt quite prepared to walk into a room of 300 odd participants who at various points in their life had all suffered from some kind of mental dysfunction. Madness as we used to call it back in the day, makes me uncomfortable. It makes us all uncomfortable. Those darting eyes, not quite at peace with the world, that fearful look, the quivering mouth, the slightly spasmic body, the out of place laughter or the perpetual melancholia hanging loosely about the lips, all signs that the person is a little unhinged and whose presence is a reminder of the precariousness of life and nature. I was assigned to selling a book, titled Sectioned, A Life Interrupted by John ODonoghue. The author, ODonoghue, spry, eyes brimming with curiosity about the world, sat next to me signing away the book and listening intently to people who dropped by to relate their own stories and struggles with mental illness. To listen to ODonoghue, who incidentally has a Masters Degree, it is hard to believe this intelligent, articulate and profoundly gifted individual also suffers from depression and episodic break-downs. He told me candidly that when he is in a state, which he describes as florid he truly believes he is John the Baptist. I asked him if there was a single part of his being, an iota of his mind, a measure of his consciousness that could elevate itself from this state and tell himself that he wasnt infact John the Baptist, at that moment, and sadly he said no. We in Goa suffer from almost a triple whammy when it comes to mental health, that of shame, guilt and ignorance. If the slightest form of mental ill-health makes its appearance in our families, be it depression or dysfunction, we are at once consumed by shame, the urgent desire to hide it from societys ugly glare, brush it under the carpet but on the other hand we are also blighted by ignorance. We feel the need to blame someone for it, not as in finding a causative factor but finding some divine or shamanistic reasons for it, and a possible cure through these avenues. One of the saddest things I have witnessed is mental illness being treated by a trip to the Mhar or to places such as Potta, where parents hope to find a cure. Sick people are prayed over, sometimes even beaten so that the demons in them dissipate, vanish, and they return to what we consider normal. I know of one girl, who suffering from a mild depression was taken to see one of these quack-healers. The healer put his hands on her and promptly told the parents that she was infested with several demons and should be exorcised and then incarcerated. Instead of dealing with what is a mental disability, the situation had taken on an even darker tone by the girl being held responsible for her state, accused of being a medieval witch of sorts. The fact is, mental illness is no different than a cut in the leg, a physical wound which needs a dressing, medication, attention, time to heal and constant care. It is imperative that we as Goans come to a clearer understanding of mental ill-health especially when rough statistics point to one in four people having the propensity to be mentally depressed. This is an ailment that is not going to go away, indeed solitary modern lifestyles, without the support of traditional families and the isolation this engenders is likely to put more and more stress on us mentally. But there is hope, mental illness can be managed and mentally ill people can lead functional lives. Do leave your feedback at carvalho_...@yahoo.com
[Goanet] Eddison's Death Condoled
19th October, 2009 Tiatr Academy Goa Panjim PRESS NOTE for favour of publication Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) condoles the death of the budding tiatr artiste Eddison Fernandes who expired on 17th October, 2009. Although he served the tiatr stage for a short time yet his contribution to tiatr stage was valuable. He was a multi-talented artiste. His promising qualities in acting would have been a great source of strength for the future of Tiatr. He was a musician as well a singer too who would have been a great asset to the Konkani tiatr stage. His sudden death at a very tender age has saddened the tiatr fraternity. TAG prays to the Almighty to give courage to his family members for the loss of young Eddison and eternal peace to his soul. Tomazinho Cardozo President - TAG
Re: [Goanet] Currently in Goa (Oct 18, 2009).......
News focuses on the negatives. Inspite of this, many people I know would still continue to opt to live in Goa. We should perhaps stop being obsessed with what our politicians do (or can't do).Instead let's look at what so many other segments of Goa (despite the handicaps) are managing to do. And, btw, when the critique comes from expats who have voluntarily chosen to cut their links with Goa, it does sound patronising and self-seeking. [Goanet] The Goan Poder
“ PODER, PODER PAO” By: Bennet Paes The aroma that whiffed out of a bottle of “Evening in Paris” might still bring to a Goan socialite, romantic memories of the evenings long gone by. But the simple pleasures of life that enthralled Goans of every hue, have their roots right inside the village bakery. Because that’s where the most enduring aroma came from – out of the freshly baked village pao. And the producer of that masterpiece was none other than the village poder. Few other sounds, too, were so joyous as the jingle that came out of his club, as he struck it hard on the ground while striding through the dusty village lanes. He wore a cabai, a vestment almost competing with the cassock of the village clergy. A large basket of wares magically balanced on his head, also added to his theatrics. Children would be seen clustering around, as the poder approached their neighbourhoods and as the jingle grew in intensity. They were all familiar faces to the poder and indeed, harbingers of the guiraik to follow. The benevolent poder would oftentimes reward the children with a khankonn, which gesture would send the children ecstatically chanting the popular lyric of those days: “Poder, poder pao – ducra boncant dao”. Those were the days of the 30’, 40’ and perhaps 50’, when Goans of all faiths used to be more sussegad and less ambitious than they are now. That included the poder, too. His morning calls were not early enough to get the freshly baked pao on time to our breakfast tables. As a result, calcho pao used to be toasted on the kitchen fire, to go along with the next morning’s cup of coffee. But, on the other hand, the day’s fresh pao was seen as a perfect match for yesterday’s atoiloli coddi. It was a make-shift affair of sorts, but it worked magic on our die-hard palates. Admittedly, changing times also brought about a change in customs. The poder of today has shed the traditional cabai. He no longer balances the basket on his head. Instead, he navigates on a pao-laden bicycle through narrow lanes, made even narrower by a serpentine chain of durgam. The old jingle no longer heralds his morning chore. Instead, a diminutive form of that ancient motor-horn ‘ponk-ponks’ menacingly to wake up even the neighbourhood’s kingfisher. He no longer has access to doorsteps, but transacts business over the durig tops. The transactions are still conducted in Konkani, but with a sprinkling of ‘Hinglish’ to curry favour with the growing number of migrant house-wives. And if truth be told, the variety of his wares has somewhat shrunk, too. The kankhon that used to be the children’s delight at one time has receded into history, and the bakri has surfaced as a worthy successor . Moreover, the heavenly aroma that used to be the hallmark of the sur-blended-pao is drastically diluted due to a shortage of Goan renders who have chosen to slog it out in Arab lands, rather than climb up to a sur-filled damonem. All said and done, it ‘bakes’ down to an uneasy feeling - that the traditional poder too will some day ease out of the scene, leaving behind the already diluted pao to be eventually replaced by a chapatti. -- Connect more, do more and share more with Yahoo! Re: [Goanet] Wake up Sid, Parrikar, footbal stadium, New campal-Veren bridge link etc
Before rebuilding the Campal stadium, I think the people living at Campal and in the vicinity should be consulted -- not that they will ever be consulted! Before the Fatorda stadium was inaugurated, one could see the chaos that was caused before and after a game. Having lived at a Campal for a number of years, I have been a witness to all this chaos. Then, most of the people used to come to the games in 2 wheelers. Now, one can only imagine the chaos that will be caused by even a 1000 people coming to any football game, each one driving a car! The traffic congestion on the Panjim-Miramar road is there for everyone to see, on a daily basis. It is great to be sentimental about a stadium, but one has to be practical and pragmatic on its impact on the quality of life, of the people around the stadium. I am sure certain politicians will be ever ready to oblige, but do they ever think clearly? Re: [Goanet] Bad news for non-US fans of President Obama
Date: Sat, 17 Oct 2009 20:46:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Mervyn Lobo mervynal...@yahoo.ca Obama's win has led to one super reward for me. My Texan in-laws, all Republicans, have had their lives changed by this man, the product of the loins of an E. African. Mario observes: Texan in-laws? Mervyn, whose well documented ignorance of the US I am forced to expose and correct time and time again on Goanet, has Texan in-laws? Saiba boggus! How can this be? Or is this some Freudian reason why Mervyn hates the US so much causing him to horribly distort so many facts about the country?:-)) I wonder if these allegedly Republican Texan in-laws know the abject poppycock Mervyn routinely writes about the US on Goanet? Mervyn wrote: Earlier this year, the in-laws decided that the entire family needed to experience to the environment that nurtured this exciting new US President, and his fore-parents. I was asked to accompany them in what I expect is a pilgrimage, even though there is no talk of this. Mario responds: Here is yet another classic example of the pathetic ignorance about all things American that I mentioned above. Everyone with even a minimal knowledge of Obama knows by now that Obama's Kenyan father was a reprobate and moral rolling stone and abandoned Obama's Caucasian mother when he was an infant. Obama's mother then married an Indonesian man and they spent a few years in Indonesia, where a school application form describes the boy as a Muslim. This relationship didn't last very long either, and Obama was shuttled off to Hawaii and brought up mostly by his white grandparents in Hawaii, who were good people, which is basically what saved him. Somehow, Mervyn doesn't seem to know any of this. I wonder if his allegedly Republican Texan in-laws know. Mervyn wrote: In a few hours, I meet up with the rest of the in-laws and head out to witness, experience and explain to them, the environment that shaped Obama. Mario responds: Saiba boggus, again! Talk about the blind leading the blind. As we see from the facts, as opposed to Mervyn's fantasies, other than his complexion, Obama was not shaped by anything Kenyan. However, if Mervyn gets to see this post before it's too late, I would like him to show his Texan in-laws the slums and the squalor that Obama's Kenyan grandmother and half-brother live in, whereas he and his family live in the lap of luxury in the White House, blissfully unconcerned about helping his Kenyan relatives. Perhaps the Texan in-laws will begin to realize exactly what Obama's REAL character is like where his Kenyan relatives are concerned, where this American multi-millionaire a) cannot help his Kenyan relatives with a few bucks a year which is all that it would take, or b) give ME their address, which I have requested numerous times, so that I could stand up for the US on his behalf and send them the few bucks that is all they need to turn their lives around. Can anyone imagine Manmohan Singh allowing his close relatives to live in jhopdis in Dharavi, even before he became Prime Minister?

2009/10/18 Mario Goveia mgov...@sbcglobal.net Date: Sat, 17 Oct 2009 20:46:09 -0700 (PDT) Perhaps the Texan in-laws will begin to realize exactly what Obama's REAL character is like where his Kenyan relatives are concerned, where this American multi-millionaire a) cannot help his Kenyan relatives with a few bucks a year which is all that it would take, or b) give ME their address, which I have requested numerous times, so that I could stand up for the US on his behalf and send them the few bucks that is all they need to turn their lives around. RESPONSE: Here is the address...this organization will make sure that these 'Obama Goans' will be taken care of. All you need is a credit/debit card...I trust you do own one? www.goasudharop.org As with all things you write, I guess it it only hot air. Actions speak louder than words. -- DEV BOREM KORUM.

[Goanet] ANALYSIS: Behind Sanatan Sanstha’s s piritual veil, a militarist face (Praveen Swami, i n the Hindu)
Behind Sanatan Sanstha’s spiritual veil, a militarist face Praveen Swami * Inflammatory literature may have driven last week’s bombings in Goa * Sanstha activists precipitated Miraj violence by distributing magazines with communal content * 4 activists of Sanstha’s sister organisation were earlier held for attacks on theatre houses NEW DELHI: Last week, a crude ammonium-nitrate based improvised explosive device detonated across the road from the Grace Church in Margao, tearing apart Goa’s festive-season cheer. Sanatan Sanstha operative Malgonda Patil was killed and Yogesh Naik critically injured while transporting the bomb — one of the two the men are thought to have fabricated to target Hindu religious gatherings held by a rival group. Many see the Sanstha as a harmless — if quixotic — cult: followers are assigned grades for their levels of spiritual awareness and encouraged to engage in arcane discussions, like the differing merits of lamps using ghee and oil. Despite credible allegations that the Sanstha has coerced and harassed followers seeking to leave its ranks, branches have sprung up across Maharashtra, in several major cities nationwide, and even in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Behind the outfit’s idiosyncratic facade, though, is an ugly militarist face. Last year, Sanstha-linked Dharmashakti Sena chief Vinay Palwalkar proclaimed a coming apocalyptic war: “the war of the future will be a Dharamyudh, and the Dharamshakti Sena will be its guiding force.” Were Patil and Naik fighting his war? Propaganda Inflammatory — and often inventive — polemic characterises the Sanstha’s propaganda. Discussing September’s riots in the town of Miraj, the organisation’s house-magazine Sanatan Prabhat’s October issue described the violence as “a well-planned attack on Hindus by Afzal Khan’s [a 17th century Bijapur warlord] Muslim descendants.” “Now,” it continued, “Hindus need to become warriors of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj to repel such attacks.” Police in Miraj say Sanatan Sanstha activists, in fact, precipitated the violence, by distributing magazines with aggressively communal content and forcing shopkeepers to down the shutters. Three Sanatan Sanstha activists were arrested for distributing the inflammatory literature. “Fed up of Muslim innocence,” the magazine reports, “Hindus [gave] a fitting reply.” “As a result of the riots in Miraj,” the article reads, “Muslims in villages were getting inspired to become insolent. Hindus, however, had enough of their insolence and started retaliating. A mob pelted stones and damaged mosques at 7 places. Thereafter, saffron flags were hoisted on these mosques.” Much of the reporting in Sanatan Prabhat appears to have no great concern for the distinction between fact and fiction. “Police,” one report claims, “have now discovered a kidnapping racket to provide recruits to Pakistani terror outfits through ‘Love Jihad.’ Investigations have revealed that all over India some 4,000 young women have been recruited in this manner to be trained against their will as terrorists and suicide bombers. In Kerala alone, the police suspect that over 500 women have fallen victim.” Terrorist actions Images like these have long been known to have incited members of the organisation to engage in acts of terrorism. Last summer, bombs went off at the Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium in Vashi, and the Gadkari Rangayatan in Thane. Both theatre managements had disregarded Hindu chauvinist protests against the play ‘Amhi Pachpute,’ a wry reworking of the Mahabharat by Santosh Pawar which is set around the travails of two middle-class Maharashtrian families locked in a dispute over a paan store. Maharashtra police investigators arrested Ramesh Gadkari, Mangesh Nikam, Santosh Angre and Vikram Bhave for the terrorist attacks. All four men were activists of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, an ultra-right Hindutva political group which the Sanstha lists, on its website, as a sister organisation. The men were, at the time of their arrests, reported to be living in retreats run by the Sanstha. The investigators found that the men had earlier attempted to set off an improvised explosive device targeting a mosque on the Pen highway. Nikam, for his part, was found to be on bail facing trial for having set off a low-grade bomb in the home of a Ratnagiri-based Hindu family that had converted to Christianity. Police also found gelatine sticks, electronic circuits and detonators that had been buried in a storage dump dug by the four arrested men along a riverbed outside Pen. Similar recoveries were made near Satara. Dangerous future? Sanstha leaders deny that their organisation has any role in terrorist acts by individual members. But the Maharashtra police investigators are less than persuaded by these claims, and have opened investigation of the organisation’s possible linkages with Akhand Bharat — the Hindutva terror group responsible for the murderous 2006 bombing of a

[Goanet] Motorbikes, two-wheelers...
One in five people in Malaysia have a moped or motorbike. Greece also has the second-highest proportion of two-wheeler ownership in the world (Public Radio International, Oct 19, 2009). Wonder how Goa would rate if judged on this scale? Higher than Malaysia? Does this reflect in the high accident rates (what with Goanetter Aires Rodrigues campaigning against helmets, etc)? Or is it also a reflection of the abysmal public transportation here? Or both? [Goanet] How to catch smelly fish....bottom fishing.
From: lesley.zlabin...@qc.cuny.edu Date: Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 9:02 PM Subject: Lesley Zlabinger is out of the office. To: Gabe Menezes I will be out of the office starting 10/14/2009 and will not return until 10/20/2009. If you need quicker assistance, please call the Louis Armstrong House Museum at 718-478-8274. Thank you. Date: Sun, 18 Oct 2009 22:05:09 +0100 From: Gabe Menezes gabe.mene...@gmail.com Anyone can make up an email and purport that it was as written. It is too uncanny that the man would reply to inform us that it was indeed Air India that flew the man from Singapore! I could easily have written below that there was no truth in the email posted here on Goanet from Lesley.zlabinger Mario observes: What is uncanny is the lengths that Gabe Menezes will go to slander me and embarrass himself by repeating the falsehood that Air India did not fly from Singapore to Mumbai in the mid-60s and therefore could not have transported the Louis Armstrong Band from Singapore to Mumbai as I had written in a post last year. Talk about a smelly bottom feeder, a term that describes Mr. Menezes' actions perfectly as we can see from the following sequence of events. He has not cited a single source to support his slander - he wants us to believe his obviously failing memory. In the meantime I have cited several credible sources from the history of Air India on Wikipedia, to excerpts of travel reports in the Singapore Straits Times, to an email from the archivist at the Louis Armstrong Museum at Queens College, City University of New York, Lesley Zlabinger, in which she confirmed from their records that the band had flown to Mumbai from Singapore on Air India. After seeing the copy of Ms. Zlabinger's email that I posted, Gabe has tried to contact her directly. He apparently received an automated response that she was out of the office until 10/20/09. The contents of the automated message are shown above. Gabe could have contacted the Singapore Straits Times regarding the numerous excerpts I posted of people traveling from and to Singapore and Mumbai on Air India throughout the 60s. No guts to do that. Gabe could have called the phone number for the Louis Armstrong House mentioned in the email he received, but that would have cost him some money for the long distance international call. Money must be tight in old Blioghty. He could have asked his buddy, Eric Pinto, who lives in New York City, to verify who Ms. Zlabinger is and the contents of the email she sent me. Instead he is now reduced to slandering Ms. Zlabinger too, trying to suggest that her identity and emails are made up. Are there no depths this bottom feeder will not sink to? I expect Gabe to follow up after Ms. Zlabinger returns to work and verify what her records show about Mr. Armstrong and his band's trip to Mumbai in 1964 from Singapore to Mumbai on Air India. After that, a real man would apologize, but in this case, I'm not holding my breath.
[Goanet] God and You
Albert writes:- Going for mass, attending hundred and one novenas and celebrating one thousand feasts do not make us christians. God has put only two things before us one is Love of God and the second one is love of man. In today's world neither the church is encouraging love of man nor the faithful who throng to the churches in thousands. Human beings will have just two children. The difference between the first and the second will be at least five to six years. There is no communication between the two. They will live in a huge mansion but separated fifty metres apart surrounded by at least two to three huge dogs which get more love and attention than the children born from the Almighty God. The children get packets of money in lieu of love and time which none of them really want. The parents are so busy making money that the children are seen even at one in the night. Husband and wife live on contract basis. sometimes they live just mere partners and are always on war. So many divorce cases that the files are piling in the court of the land as well as the court of the church but no clergy has time to help to prevent these cases. Mere praying with our lips while our hearts are filled with filth is of no use. i want each and every the so called christian to hold his right hand to his chest and listen to the talk of his own heart . Find out if you have made illegal money, robbed someone's land, cheated someone, used family planning means to hold back children, had abortion, harrased someone, and caused anxiety to others and dragged others to court unnecessary. _ Newsmakers and happenings from around the world – just one click away on MSN India http://in.msn.com
[Goanet] Ami Goemkar
To The Editor, Herald News Paper, Panaji,Goa. Sir, Kindly publish the following matter in your esteemed paper. Ami Goemkar A niz goemkar is goemkar first and then he is a Hindu,Catholic or a Muslim. We always lived together and will live together although some selfish, jealous, religious fanatics have tried their level best to erect a wall of hatred among us.At no cost a niz goemkar can be a religious fanatic cause niz goemkars believe in the religion of humanity.Come to Cuncolim during Sontreo festival and you will witness how the catholics and Muslims dance to the tune of Sontreo-music led by catholic local musicians,it is a tradition and has been going on since centuries. The Hindu community makes it a point to visit the Our Lady of Health Church on the 2nd of February to pay their respect for Saude-Saibinn.Last but not the least, one would find more catholics and Hindus than their Muslim brothers at the Urus at Adnen,Balli to enjoy the Qawali session. When the Rakhindhar station at Cuncolim was desecrated,we knew that some fanatics purposely wants to disturb the peace in the historic village for personal gains.Goa is a place for goemkars and not for organizations like RSS,Ram Sena or Sanathan. The one time very beautiful state of Goa was once known for Sun,Sand, fun and fenni is slowly turning into a state known for day-light dacoities, murders and all sort of Crimes. In the history of Goa,we never had a major law and order problems but unfortunately some fanatics with no goan blood in them created riots at Curchorem and recently a blast at Margao.First, the past and the present politicians in power raped the natural beauty of Goa and now some fanatics trying to rob the peace of goemkars. Days are gone when goemkars dined and danced throughout the night, nobody got disturbed those days cause Goa was of goemkars. Now we have to go by the time restrictions.Things have become tough for niz goemkars. The sun has suddenly turned to be very hot, lost our green fields to builders, the sand on the beach has turned it's color to a odd one and fun has got a restriction.River Princess is almost at the coast, the past and the present governments just watching it,thus proving it's competency. These elected people in power have been very good and fast in passing bills to save the illegalities of the hotels belonging to the rich and when it comes to the common people they turn out to be dead. Elected people in power had plans to sell Goa for all in the name of Regional plan 2011 but they were caught and now some fanatics are planning to disturb the communal harmony of our beloved Goa.Let us pass a loud and clear message saying,we goans live as goemkars in Goa and no power in the world will prevail over the communal harmony of Goa.This place is for decent fun loving people and we don't have have place for fanatics known for fanatical acts.
