[Goanet] Imbroglio that is Afghanistan
Afghanistan is a hilly country occupied by many war like tribes called Pashtuns, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras, Balochis etc. Pashtuns ( formerly known as Pathans and fondly remembered by the British and the Soviets ) are a dominant tribe that occupies not only East andSouth of Afghanistan ( Kabul and Kandahar ) but also North West Frontier Province of Pakistan ( Peshawar and Quetta ) . It is mainly Pashtun that the American army cannot so far subdue, for they are born fighters and for whom fighting is considered to be a national sport. They have a hilly terrain of ravines, gorges, canyons and what have you, from where they launch counter attacks much to the chagrin of technology dominated American army. It looks as if Americans are not adept at fighting on the hilly terrain just as they had found it difficult to tame Vietnamese in their dense monsoon jungles. American General McChrystal wants another 40,000 troops but I have a feeling that Pashtuns will be too happy to deal with the reinforcements on the premise that more is always better for their shooting instincts.
[Goanet] LAZY NATIVES AGRESSIVE MIGRANTS. Goa going the Bombay way..
Like Bombay, Goa is also going in the same direction. Migrants are pouring into Goa. Only 20% of those migrants are living legally by purchasing land, flat, property or living on rent. These 20% contribute taxes, keep their surroundings hygenic, etc. The other 80% of the migrants are the ones who settle illegally by encroaching land in broad daylight by bribing local administration, cops, slumlords. These illegal migrants create slums and shit and piss anywhere and indulge in criminal activities. The illegal migrants are prepared to work for meagre salary and prepared to do any type of jobs. Since these illegal migrant don't pay any taxes, rent, etc they save lot of money which they send to their families in their native places. The illegal migrants later become votesbanks of politicians. The politicians in order to get votes provide the illegal migrants with free water connection, voter id, ration cards, etc and eventually pucca and legal houses. Resources which should have been utilized for the benefit of Goans will be diverted to serve the illegal migrants living in the slums. Today the population of goan catholics in goa is around 35%. A few decades down the line the population of goan catholics will become less than 5%. and the goan catholics will face exactly the same tragedy the catholic natives of bombay are facing. *source : www bombayland.blogspot com * * * * *

[Goanet] Feelings and Emotions Portrayed in Paint
Feelings and Emotions Portrayed in Paint By NAGUESH SARDESSAI Thursday, 29 October 2009 01:36 Her current exhibition titled 'Reflections' has over twenty-seven works on display. Her paintings are the reflections of the happenings in the life of people in general and her experiences in particular. She has, after her Masters, completed a brief stint with an art gallery in Mumbai before packing her bags to return to Goa. Having realised the need to satisfy her own inner self, Gaikwad immersed herself in the process of painting. She prefers oils over any other media. 'Oils,' she says, 'suits my temperament and painting style.' More in love with the process of painting than the painting by itself, she works at a leisurely pace. Most of her works are women oriented and few are based on the subject of relationships. Influences, experiences, feelings and other factors leave an impression on the artist and get translated into paintings. Gaikwad's case is no different. She intends to create a mood and avoids going into intellectual explanations. Her works are simple and neat. All the 27 works bring out varied moods and shades of women. Her anxiety, fears, loving glances etc gets personified in the paintings. Her works have shades of Amrita Sher Gill, B Prabha and Anjali Ela Menon. She admits her admiration for masters like Paul Gauguin and his bold usage of bright and vibrant colours. Each of her works has a lilting quality in them which entices the viewer. If 'Midnight Fiesta' is fun-filled, then 'Dream I,II,III' are surrealistic. 'Blue in Spring' and 'Poise' stand out for the sheer beauty and grace. Having participated in the State Art Exhibitions and this being her first solo show, Gaikwad clearly displays the capacity and ability to go a long way in the field of art. The show will be on till October 29. http://www.navhindtimes.in/buzz/4706-feelings-and-emotions-portrayed-in-paint- Goanet AE www.goanet.org

It was 40 years ago on this day, October 29, 1969 when one IMP at UCLA communicated with another IMP at Stanford University [1]..and the internet that was born a little over a month earlier began communicating. Listen to Professor Leonard Kleinrock aka Father of the Internet describe that night with a crackle in his voice [2] and how he was 'shown the door' by ATT as they felt they could not monetise his inventions. Big mistake!! Thanks to Academia, we have the internet!! Something that many of us take for granted everyday. The devices we use today to communicate, sometimes lodged as an appendage on our hips, is a far cry from those earlier computers of 1969. Email, a legacy application from the early Web 1.0 days is still around and withstanding the onslaught of Web 2.0 applications vis-a-vis Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.The semantic Web is around the corner we are toldholograms, et al!! [Goanet] job reservations
Dear Goankars, As per e-mail of Arwin below, I would like to add to what he has written below:- (1) A parish priest in Goa, refused to let his catholic parishioner, a 24-year old goan residing in goa, check the records of his parents marriage which was written in portugese in the church register, nor would he let this boy have a copy of his parents marriage details which were written in portugese, so that he could make a portugese passport, instead he gave the information in English. (2) This same goan boy has informed me that for a govtmt job in goa RTO - the bribe is advance payment of Rs. 12 lakhs. (3) Govtmt job in Goa police Rs. 15 lakhs, advance payment. (4) Allegedly, only goan ministers are allowed to distribute quota of govt jobs in reserved and general category, at a price. (5) Goans can get SC/ST/OBC certificates for govtmt jobs and admission into govtmt educational institutions, but even in Goa there is a price for such certificates. Yes, therefore local Goans are forced to do menial, low-income jobs in Goa, or migrate to foreign countries. I hope someone on this website can prove me wrong, and instead, inform me the name and address where local goans can apply for govtmt jobs. === Regards, = From: Arwin Mesquita Subject: [Goanet] No jobs for Goans (Letter to the Editor - OHeraldo) *No jobs for Goans R Fernandes, Margao *The arrest of the customs employee from Vasco for duping Goans of 8 crores under the garb of providing them jobs at the Dabolim airport helps us to draw some inferences: 1. Goans are willing to work here in Goa and not just waiting to go abroad as some like to project. 2. Goans cannot get jobs in Goa without paying all and sundry. 3. Goans cannot get jobs in Goa even after paying all and sundry. 4. Ministers don?t care about giving jobs to Goans. So there are no Goans in the Konkan Railway, Airport Authority, Meteorological Dept., Railways, etc. 5. Goans do not get jobs in the reserved category too. Who bags these jobs? --

I'm not a linguist, but know of no other Indian language that has so celebrated and glorified a human being's humble pubic hair in its idiom as our own, Konknni. I agree, the Konknni adages that do that appear 'colourful' superficially, but on second reading, bring out the full flavour of infinite local wit. I resume work on that front next month. But, I think, this is the style in which Konkani is used much of the time. Levels of vulgarity probably vary from language to langauge. So does the acceptability of it. For that matter, Valmiki Faleiro's forthcoming book on Konkani sayings does have interesting, if 'colourful' sections of Goan axioms which would be definitely unprintable in most English texts. [Goanet] Sesa Goa Gets Probe Notice from Fraud Investigation Agency
Sesa Goa Gets Probe Notice from Fraud Investigation Agency By PRASENJIT BHATTACHARYA NEW DELHI -- Sesa Goa Ltd., a unit of Vedanta Resources Plc, said Thursday it has received a notice from India's federal fraud investigation agency for a probe into its finances and management between 2001 and 2009. The scope of investigation includes looking into the state of affairs of the company... in respect of mismanagement, malpractices, financial and other irregularities, Sesa Goa said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange. Sesa Goa, India's second-largest iron ore miner by sales, said it will fully cooperate with the investigation. It didn't say when the probe would begin, but the Serious Fraud Investigation Office said the investigation will be completed in the next six months. Sesa Goa said the order for the investigation may have originated from a shareholder complaint in 2003 before Sesa Goa was acquired by Vedanta. The scope of SFIO investigation include looking into the state of affairs of the company and its subsidiary Sesa Industries Ltd, in respect of mismanagement, malpractices, financial and other irregularities, Sesa Goa said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange [ Images ]. The SFIO enquiry, to be completed in six months, follows a probe by registrar of companies which was looking into Sesa Goa's case since 2003. The company... has received request from the RoC for information for the period from 2001 to 2009, the statement said, adding it also received an intimation for the SFIO probe from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs yesterday. Clarifying its position, Sesa Goa said, the company believes that the investigation originates from the complaints filed by one of the shareholders of SIL against SIL, the company and the directors in 2003, prior to the acquisition of the company by Vedanta in April 2007. The company added it will fully cooperate with the investigation and expressed its commitment to follow the highest norms for corporate governance and transparency. Following the announcement, Sesa Goa shares fell as much as six per cent in morning trade on the BSE. It was trading down 1.69 per cent in the afternoon session. Allegations against the company, official sources said, also include diversion of funds. The RoC had submitted its report on Sesa Goa early last week. On Wednesday, Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid had termed the inspection as a normal procedure and said, These inspections are procedures that have to be followed before taking a final decision. Meanwhile, another case pertaining to merger of Sesa Goa, the country's leading iron ore producer, with its subsidiary Sesa Industries is pending before the Supreme Court. India's largest iron-ore exporter said on Thursday it and its unlisted Sesa Industries Ltd (SIL) subsidiary were under investigation by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), and the probe had to be completed in six months. The investigation comes 10 months after India's biggest corporate scandal, a $1 billion fraud at IT services firm Satyam (SATYAM.BO : 100.6 -5.65) Computer. I think the overseas investors will be very happy that the regulatory agencies in India are becoming more and more intrusive in company affairs, said Rishi Sahai, managing director of Cogence Advisors, a New Delhi-based corporate advisory firm. [Goanet] Porvorim suffers- government releases water connections...
Porvorim residents may be suffering due to acute water shortage, but the Government continues to release water connections to huge housing projects in the village. Today 29th Ocotber 2009, one more water connection was given to Sapna Habitat with 400 apartments and everyone knows why. The close relationship of the nanu's and the CM. The A.E. who refused to approve the water connection for this project was transfered one month ago. To add insult to injury, today the PWD was armed with an SDM's order asking the police to give protection to the labourers. The Sarpanch and some Panchayat members who came to the site were helpless as the PI kept flashing the order. With so much of rainfall, the PWD is not capable of releasing water to the residents everyday. The sewerage which is released into public drains from the Sapna Garden apartments at nights from the below capacity sewerage treatment tank is being ignored by the health authorities. Worst still the sewerage is released into a water drain that leads directly to the Pilerne spring. Despite a Gram Sabha resolution not to allow more constructions of buildings, the giovernment is forcing it's way through with use of the police. If one goes to court, the matter will continue to see-saw for the next 3 years or even more. Leaving aside the lawyer's costs and the continued burden of keeping track of the dates for court hearings, briefing the lawyer, leaving your job and being present in court, if accounted for will run into thousands. An FIR filed by us against a sarpanch in 1999 under prevention of corruption act has now come up in special court in 2009. What would be the peaceful solution to all this dadagiri of the government, if violence by the tribals to protect their land and livelihood is considered wrong in a democratic process? -Soter D'Souza

This glitters !! Thank you. Gabe - Got Tony Brent ?! From: Tony Correia t...@correia.home.co.ke To: goa...@goanet.org Sent: Wed, October 28, 2009 1:18:14 PM Subject: [Goanet] Meaning of monkey in AMCHI BHAS Dear AMCHI BHAS lovers, There are numerous words in AMCHI BHAS that are spelt and/or pronounced differently by different sections of Goans depending on factors such as the areas they come from or the people they have associated with. Makodd/mankodd is one of them. (Please note the double d at the end of the word to get the correct sound). A few other examples are sotri/sontri (umbrella), paim/paem (legs), kavllo/kanvllo (crow), khott/khontt (heel), somzonni/sozmonni (meaning), donparam/denparam (afternnoon), patt/fatt (back), khak/khank (armpit). The beauty of us Goans, unlike many other peoples of the world, is that we can have unity in diversity and it would therefore be prudent to allow the variety that exists to continue as by doing so we not only avoid hurting anyone's feelings but also enrich our MAIMBHAS. The feminine of makodd/mankodd is keldem but we can accept other forms if the same are being used in certain parts of Goa. Many words starting with kh are pronounced and written by some Goans without the k at the beginning of the word. One example is khapri/'hampri, which, to the best of my knowledge, is derived from the word Kaffir or Caffre, a term originally used by Arabs and Europeans for Bantu inhabitants of southern Africa but now regarded as a term of opprobrium and no longer officially used. Others are khando/'hando (branch) and khandi/'handi (twig). I am not a scholar of or an authority on AMCHI BHAS or any other language for that matter so the views expressed above are purely from the interest I have taken in and the love I have for our language. Finally, I am very much interested in our 'opari' (proverbs), 'mhunn'niom' (sayings) and 'humannim' (riddles). Here are a couple of humannim for those who are interested in them: BATTKAR BOSLA BALKANVAN, XEVTTO HALTA KALSANVAN. POTTAR POTT, BURAKAN BOTT. Re: [Goanet] What would you be willing to give your life for?
Man has often shaped god in his image and likeness. Christ went from being a seen as a rebel leader of the underdog, to being the religious figure supported by the dominant forces of an Empire (the Roman one). From there, it was a short step away to him becoming Christ the King, a term still in use despite the sun actually setting on the monarchy in most parts of the planet. In Medieval times, he was dressed up in the finery of the feudal order. In colonial times, the powers of that era (Spain, Portugal particularly, but also Britain) were quick to deploy Christian religious imagery to justify their own civilizing and economic agendas. More recently, I read somewhere (don't recall the exact citation) references to the management styles of Christ. It was almost as if he was Christ the Managing Director. Even someone like Lal Krishna Advani has been able to deploy Christian imagery, when it suits his purpose, both in Goa late last decade and in Kerala [http://www.samaylive.com/news/bjp-a-party-resurrected-after-crucifixion-advani/617848.html] If you take the sections of the Bible which talk about his search for justice, and against the powers that be, it's not hard to see a Christ the Revolutionary emerge. The Liberation Theology that gained hold in the jungles of Latin America is as close you could come to a revolutionary form of Christianity (though this was also seen as a counterfeit by forces both on the Right and the Left, for differing reasons). Whether Christ might have taken up card-holding membership :-) of the CPI (Maoists) or not is a moot point today. But Marshall has a point when he says he would probably be branded a Naxalite. Even a Seby Rodrigues in Goa was recently! By none other than the honourable leader of the Opposition, Manohar Parrikar! Do mainstream Goan religious folk subscribe to this belief? My understanding was that Naxalites were as bad as religious terrorists and extremists in India. During 2009 so far they have killed 560 innocent Indian civilians and security personnel. Had Jesus Christ lived today, possibly he too would have been branded a ‘naxalite’. There are many commonalities between Christianity and Marxism. Social justice is an important issue in India.

How can we be so heartless to dump our beloved parents who have given us the best in the homes ? [Goanet] What is a 'khandi'?
Just needed to know whether it is accurate to translate a 'khandi' (the old Goan system of measuring field areas) to roughly 4000 square metres? Does anyone have any pointers that could tell us about the old system of measurement in place here earlier? I remember the 'pailies' and 'podhs' used to measure small quantities of grain, before the metric system became the unavoidable (by law) standard. Of course, fish is still not sold by kilos in Goa, and eggs come by the dozen :-) FN -- Frederick Noronha :: +91-832-2409490 Writing, editing, alt.publishing, photography, journalism Books from Goa: http://tiny.cc/goabooks

[Goanet] What would you be willing to give your life for?
Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2009 21:43:11 +0530 From: Marshall Mendonza mmendonz...@gmail.com Both Arun and Vernon were heavily influenced by the liberation theology propounded by the Jesuits in the 70's and 80's and practiced especially in Central and South America. Mario responds: So called liberation theology grew out of frustation with the oppressive oligarchies that existed in South America where a small number of wealthy families ruled the roost and exploited vast numbers of average citizens. These oligarchies functioned very much like colonists and had minimal social consciences. Unfortunately, the Catholic Church did not do much to alleviate the exploitation of the populace, thereby failing in its primary mission. Thus liberation theology evolved as a well intentioned attempt to implement social justice by Christianizing Marxism. This was an absurd concept, redundant on its face and a contradiction in philosophies as well. All that was really necessary was for the Catholic Church to start behaving like Christians. Real Christianity has always had a social philosophy based on love of one's neighbor without the coercive weight of government being involved. In stark contrast, Marxism pretends to have a social conscience but this is only a ruse because it is based on the coercive and oppressive weight of government controlled by a small number of ruling elites who think they know what's best for everyone else, better than they do, and are willing to impose their will by force and violence. Thus Marxism seeks to replace the wealthy oligarchs with its ruling elites and the population is left no better off than they were before, often will less personal freedom as we see from the experiences of Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia. Marshall wrote: Had Jesus Christ lived today, possibly he too would have been branded a naxalite. Mario observes: Marshall, This is one of the most outrageous, even blasphemous, assertions I have seen in a long time. You don't seem to have a clue as to what Naxalite means. For Marshall's edification, here is how Wikipedia accurately describes the Naxalite movement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naxalite Excerpt: Naxalite or Naxalvadis (name from the village of Naxalbari in the Indian state of West Bengal where the movement originated), are a group of far-left radical communists, supportive of Maoist political sentiment and ideology. Their origin can be traced to the split in 1967 of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), leading to formation of Communist Party of India (Marxist- Leninist). They have been responsible, since 1947, of violent acts on the Indian state and its machinary. [end of excerpt] Naxalites are VIOLENT far left radical Maoist communists. Their inspiration comes from Mao Tse Tung, the worst mass murderer in world history responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of political adversaries in his attempts to consolidate his political power. Jesus was the exact opposite of a Naxalite. Marshall wrote: There are many commonalities between Christianity and Marxism. Social justice is an important issue in India. Mario observes: Poppycock. As outlined above, real Christianity stands for loving your neighbor as yourself and for taking care of those who need help, whereas Marxism replaces love with the coercive power of the state where a small group of ruling elites seek to control every aspect of their lives, by force if necessary. Marxism has failed in every country that has tried it and been consigned to the thrash heap of history where it belonged to begin with. Today it is synonymous with brutally oppressive states with ruined economies and terrified citizens in places like N. Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Somalia and a few other basket cases. Christianity is alive and well and spreading around the world. Marshall wrote: I am attaching transcripts of an interview of Arundhati Roy with Karan Thapar which relates to such issues and also an interaction between CNN-IBN with Arundhati Roy and Gladstone Dung Dung which has lessons for us all even here in Goa. Mario responds: Arundhati Roy is a proponent of the failed ideology of Marxism. She is a dangerous radical in sheep's clothing whose ideas are as obsolete and harmful as the failed ideologies of Marxism, Leninism and Maoism. Proof of this lies in the rejection of these ideologies by its major proponents like the old Soviet Union and China, who tried it and created nothing but economic havoc and human misery until they decided to scrap it for the sake of their people. There are no lessons for Goa as far as I can see in anything that Arundhati and the frustrated and violent radicals and revolutionaries she supports seem to believe. While there are some parallels between the corrupt government in Goa and the wealthy oligarchs in South America in how they run roughshod over the populace, the oligarchs

The question is whether mainstream religious folk accept armed violence as a legitimate means of fighting against injustice, which this form of Marxism and Liberation Theology does.
