Re: [Goanet] Goanese
2009/11/20 Bernice Pereira bernicepere...@yahoo.com: Cecil Pinto's article is interesting. The word Goanese (accent on 'ese') does jar, but what is more jarring is makkapao (in other words maska pao and abbreviated as makka), as if Goans are the only people in the country eating bread and butter. Bernice, do we find it jarring too when a Goan calls someone else a Ghanti, for instance? Or a Khapri? Or a Posko? Or is our sense of outrage reserved only when we feel the pinch? Another disgusting habit is being addressed as Aunty and Uncle by hawkers/ salespeople specially in Mumbai and this is directed only to the Christian community. Reminds me of the early days of prohibition, when people went to the aunties to buy their fix of home distilled liquor. Certainly nobody likes to be Aunty/Uncle of ever hawker or street urchin. Nobody? Why not? I suspect these hawker and street urchins as you describe them are using this term out of respect, not mockery. Maybe they believe that's the way Goans like to be addressed; just as quite a few motorcycle 'pilots' in Goa believe that foreign tourists of the backpacker kind like to be addressed as Baba (as in Hello Baba. You go Anjuna, baba? Only sixty rupees, baba.) And why is it disgusting when hawkers/sales persons use the term? Is it an issue of class-bias? Incidentally, I know some returned-expats who detest being called Uncle or Aunty even in Goa. I've tried, unsucessfully, to explain that the word Uncle or Aunty when used in a Konklish (as journalist Valentino Fernandes would put it) way has differing connotations. It no longer means dad's brother or mum's sister. Instead it means: a middle-aged gent or lady, whom you want to address respectfully. My personal view of Goanese is that people use this term more out of ignorance than the desire to insult. And that Goans are unduly hypersensitive about it. --FN -- Frederick Noronha :: +91-832-2409490 Writing, editing, alt.publishing, photography, journalism ANOTHER GOA: http://openlibrary.org/b/OL23851672M/Another_Goa
[Goanet] Appeal for Christmas Gifts for underprivileged children
November 2009 Dear parents, Christmas is a time were we are remembered to share with those who are less privileged than us. Tara Trust, a non-profit organization in India, which is in the process of building a mobile library project for the less privileged in Goa, named BeBook. BeBook will reach out to orphanages, migrant children and others who have not been as lucky as you and me. We would like to encourage your children to pack a gift-box for an orphan in Goa. We will distribute the boxes at Don Bosco in North Goa on December 14th at 10.00 am. All those packing boxes are welcome to be part of the event, if you have the time. Otherwise we will take your box along. We already found parents and kids to participate but still need supporters for 20 kids, mainly gifts for boys, age 6. How do I pack a Christmas-box? Please choose one of the above children and buy some things that match the age and your budget (around 300-500 Rupees)! It can be books or toys or anything that comes to your mind that will give joy to a child. Please let me know which children are chosen, so we will have gifts matching all age groups in the end. What kind of things should NOT go in the box? - no used things - no broken things - no breakable things or fluids, no perfumes - no sharp items like scissors - no video games and no war toys, such as plastic guns - no medicines Thank you very much for your support! If you and your child have decided to join our cause, please let me know. The gifts can be delivered at Literati! With regards, Katharina Poggendorf-Kakar Tel. 9890016277 Mail: kpka...@hotmail.com

and the misinformation about the goan Arjuna awardees continues ---http://goanvoiceuk.wordpress.com/2009/11/19/times-of-oman-19-nov-2009-pages-18-19/ MY EARLIER MAIL ON GOA NET http://www.goansinoman.com/sports.htm Hello Hello my Goan brothers and football lovers how can i forgot about bruno when i mentions about the Arjuna Award, when the Goans in Oman have mentioned brahamanand, they have conveniently forgotten yet another favorite Goan son, hopefully they do justice to him on their website. Sports--- Today sports brings communities, states, countries together. Every emerging country believes that sports can contribute a lot in building friendship, harmony, peace and understanding among nations. This is more true of Goa, for sports runs in every Goan’s blood. People around the globe acknowledge Goans as fun loving and peaceful people and that comes from their natural love for sports. Even though Goa is a small state, it is held in high esteem with regard to football, hockey, swimming, athletics, windsurfing and many other games. Especially football. Any discussion on Indian football cannot leave out the Goan equation. With four Goan clubs – Dempo SC, Churchill Bros SC, Clube De Sporting and Vasco SC featuring in the 12 team Indian I – league, the success of Goan clubs on the national scene bears testimony to the love and passion Goans have for this game in particular. Mr Brahmanand SK Shankhwalker is Goa’s first recipient of the Arjuna Award, which is India’s most prestigious sports award. Mr Brahmanand rose to be one of finest goalkeepers in Indian football. We the Sports Sub-committee at GCO have committed ourself to giving the Goan sports talent in Oman a platform to perform, exhibit and share sporting events amongst fellow Goans and others. We are happy to inform you of two major sports activities planned for this year: First, a 11 a side football tournament, and second, a Sport day for all Goans. We have planned the Swift Connection Cup Football Tournament on Friday, 7th of November 2008 at Al-Khuwair Oman Club grounds. A total of 12 to 14 teams will be participating in this tournament. We are expecting a crowd of around 1250 the day. Besides the league style matches, which will culminate in the semi-finals and finals, there will be spot prizes and gifts for all. A ladies football shoot-out competition will be held in the evening. Adding spice to the day, we shall have a live band in attendance. We have approached Mr Ali Al Habsi (Oman National football team Goal keeper) to be the chief guest for the finals. We request all our sports lovers to spread the news of this event so that a maximum number of Goans may utilize this opportunity to meet and interact with each other on this day. We are also planning a Sports Day / Day Out for all Goans . It will be a full day event with games, food and music. The venue, date and other details will be will be announced shortly. We encourage many more members to join us to build a strong team in order to organize more sporting events in the days to come. We also welcome any suggestions and ideas for the success of Sport Committee of GCO. [Goanet] Selma Quits
Eric Pinto's post caught my eye... which then took me to Selma's related post. It appears that Selma had just a run-into one of those hoity-toity Goans in London; and is confusing them with the sussegad bhatkars ani empregados de Goa. Likely Selma spotted these Brit-Goans using their Queen's English admixed in their verbal helium. They in turn spotted Selma's Americanism mixed with her Middle-East lifestyle of roiling in the mullah (gold) and her salt-of-the-earth logic straight from her Goa roots. While the Brit-Goans showed-off their sesquipedalian (a lover of big words) traits, Selma took great pride in pointing out their foibles, keeping an eye on the world for the rest us. She of course has 'been there, ... and ... done that'; and likely they could not stand her voice of eternal reason, the Diogenes of our generation. But how about Their reputations and lifestyles, was preserved by the silent contempt shown towards them by other Goans (native and immigrant) who had surpassed them in knowledge, skills and wealth. The Professor ani Professora clung to their high school certificates; while their students went on to earn graduate and double-graduate degrees. Clearly the message is don't present that more egalitarian garb. It will be spotted a mile away by the white-knight of Goan writers, holding the feet of the hemming and hawing nuveau bhatkars (who now drinks Johnny Walker Black and Blue) to the Goan fire. Regards, GL - Carvalho The bhatkarponn of Goan forums Those days are gone now but that sense of bhatkarponn has not died in these families. Over the course of the four years I have been on Goan forums, I have come across it again and again. Yes, to a large extent caste is defunct in Goan society but it is not dead. It is merely dressed in a more egalitarian garb. There were in the Goa of yore a few Catholic families who no doubt occupied positions of power and privilege pre-1961. This sense of entitlement was upheld by notions of caste, with little or possibly no regard for merit. Nonetheless, in time, education and economics played their part in insulating this coterie from the rest of Goa. Doubtless in time they solidified their positions, made possible by inter-marriage. In time they became almost a clan. Implacable. Their reputations and lifestyles, however debauched, protected by a wall of silence, maintained in part by loyalty, in part by fear and sadly in part through unfailing reverence from all those that called them bhatkar.

Deadly Labor Wars Hinder India's Rise http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125858061728954325.html Excerpt: We can't be a capitalist country that has socialist labor laws, says Jayant Davar, president of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India. The unrest serves as a reminder that India has far to go before it stands alongside the world's other economic powerhouses. With its widening middle class and growing base of rural consumers, India has averaged more than 8% growth for the last half-decade. It is seen as a country that can help lead a global economic recovery. But first, it must show it can ride out booms and slowdowns alike. The country's manufacturing sector, after growing about 7% annually for the past 16 years, logged 2.4% growth in the 12 months that ended in March. That has pressed manufacturers to make some unpopular cutbacks -- spurring labor actions that have slowed production further and suppressed growth. [end of excerpt]
[Goanet] Obama fails to understand India's distrust of China.
Any respect I had for President Obama has been wiped out by his ridiculous joint statement with China. Talk about placing a Fox in the hen's coop ! After being back-stabbed several times by China it is no wonder that India is wary of China. India is walking on eggshells right now, fully aware of China's growing military prowess, while its ally and client-state Pakistan is a thorn in India's side on the Western border. Until India builds up its own military might, it cannot afford to antagonize China. China meanwhile is flexing its muscles and it is only a matter of time before it annexes Arunachal Pradesh. Some Indian politicans have yet to fully appreciate the magnitude of the problem that India faces vis-a-vis China. As for President Obama, he reminds me of a mendicant, begging bowl in hand kow-towing to the China line, very much like former British premier Chamberlain who prior to World War II kow-towed and acquiesced to Hitler. History will repeat itself. Sad.

To all, their hurts. All is relevant. To all, their salve. Young Muslim cab drivers in Mumbai mostly call me Uncle, and are startled when I talk to them about jihad (its multiple meanings) and stuff. [Goanet] CITIZEN'S INITIATIVE FOR COMMUNAL HARMONY GOA - THREAT TO SECULARISM
I made it a point to attend this meet at the Menezes Branganza Hall (Ground Floor) this evening and I must say that I enjoyed listening to the winding portion of Pundalik Naik's address in Konkani and the full address of Govind Pansare in Marathi. I was late to catch the address of Dr Narendra Dabholkar, Executive President of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti. I must say that liked what I heard and I made it a point to go to the stage and endorse the resolution taken against Sanatan Saunstha. The talk by one accomplished young person (name not known) on how the Saunstha which may be considered as a cult organization brain-washes its victims was much appreciated. It made sense when he said that the victims themselves who turn out to be brainwashed zombies should be slowly de-brainwashed instead of being victimized but the leaders of the cult organization must be taken to task. Apart from endorsing the resolution, I did not say what I wanted to say due to it being late in the evening and because I needed to return home in a jiffy. But this is what I would say if I did say it at all: 1.Give teeth to the below signature contents of Swami Agnivesh. 2. That it is the responsibility and the business of the Government of the day as the custodian of the Constitution of India to keep its eyes and ears open in order to case out rabid communal organizations like Sanatan Saunstha and to discourage them from freely operating from the sacred soil of Goa. The present Government is found much wanting in this regard or else Sanatan Saunstha would have been already banned in Goa and its headquaters closed down. 3. That the Goa Su-Raj Party had initiated a dialogue with the Saunstha and had its delagation meet the Saunstha people at the Ramnathi Headquarters way back in 2003 but did not pursue any more talks because it was felt that the management had some hidden agenda but was trying to sell itself with its tall claims of being sensitive to the side effects of propagating the Hindu Religion through frivolous practices like burning of Narkasuras, generating noises/air polution through displaying fire-works etc. 4. That the Sanatan Saunstha should be banned in Goa. The organizers of the meet must be congratulated for creating awareness in the people of Goa, especially in the more rooted in religion Hindus. There were many known faces attending the meet, though small, including Fr. Maverick Fernandes of CSJP-Goa. floriano lobo Gen. Sec. [Goanet] Margao's internal roads help ease congestion
Margao's internal roads help ease congestion TNN 20 November 2009, 06:05am IST MARGAO: The city's internal roads have come as a blessing with the main roads choked with vehicular traffic. Those wishing to make an U turn at the Hospicio hospital while entering the city or driving down from the hospital towards the old market will have to make use of the internal road to drive down to Abba de Faria road leading towards the old market. Similarly, vehicles moving towards Pajifond can use the internal road from the BPS club instead of having to drive straight towards the Collectorate office, leading to traffic decongestion. Similarly, a right turn from the Hospicio circle to go towards the hospital will not be allowed. Instead, the vehicles will have to proceed straight and take a turn from the Holy Spirit church and enter the city once again. The diversion has been made possible with a new notification issued by the south Goa collector, G P Naik following recommendations made by the traffic cell, Margao. The notification for the diversion is on a trial basis, but if it is found useful, then the plan can be taken forward,'' said traffic cell inspector, P B Shirwaiker. Shirwaiker said the new route will ensure smooth flow of traffic. There is also a plan to shift the bus stand and auto rickshaw stand near the Hospicio hospital. The notification was to be executed from Thursday, but got delayed because of the impending visit of President Pratibha Patil and as the traffic police remained busy with the parade practice. The internal roads were earlier thought of as an alternative to decongest the traffic, but it was kept on hold because of residential colonies. However, the administration decided to go ahead in view of the increasing criticism it faced over the bourgeoning traffic chaos and the fracas that it led to. Earlier in the year, tourism minister, Francisco X (Micky) Pacheco had filed a complaint against one traffic constable at the Hospicio circle, who was found wanting during duty hours. The traffic cell conducted an inquiry and the constable was transferred. The constable too had filed a counter complaint against the minister for 'using foul language,' police said. Recently, an youth was arrested for manhandling a traffic constable at the same circle and charged with assault and obstructing a government servant while legally discharging his duties. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Margaos-internal-roads-help-ease-congestion/articleshow/5249377.cms

Robert and Andre moved to the west from gulf and settled there .Caroline had a bad luck when her husband died leaving her with two small children. She moved from her husband's house to her mother's house and stayed with her widowed mother. Her brothers never bothered to come down to Goa nor even send their mother any money. Caroline managed to feed four mouths by working in somebody's kitchen. She felt that her brothers were not interested in the property and so she gave up her husband's house and property in favour of her brother in law and received a small amount from settlement which she put in the fixed deposit. She managed to educate her parents. As years passed by her mother's health started to detoriate and most of the savings which she managed to get from sale of field product went to pay the bills of the doctors. A time came when she had to sell some gold which her mother had to buy medicines. Her mother passed away and now she thought she would live a very happy life till her sons stood on their own. One fine day both her brothers came and they wanted to sell their house. They even managed to get a buyer. Caroline was in a fix. where will she go now ? She was not aware as to how much the sale of the house would be and how much she would get. Though she tried to convince her brothers that she has no house of her own, they were not prepared to listen to her as their house would fetch them around a crore and a half. Caroline was not aware for how much the brothers sold the house and the property .They gave her ten lakhs and with that she managed to buy a small flat somewhere .The brothers were contented that they got a big price for the house of their parents without spending a pie. How they managed to take their price abroad we do not know but the two brothers never felt a bit of uneasiness to cheat their only sister. _ Windows 7: Find the right PC for you. [Goanet] Churchill bab adamant to build bridges in Nave lim
Hello Friends, It is for the people to guess why Churchill is really adamant to build 3 bridges in Navelim. With this bridges coming up,it will not only kill the village of NAVELIM but it will also result in more killings of GOANS on the GOAN roads in road accidents.(Nerul in Bardez was a nice and peaceful village before the Candolim bridge was built). Real need of the hour is cheap and efficient public transport on Margao-Panjim- Mapusa road. SKY BUS project developed by Konkan Railway would have been a real blessing to Goans who have to shell out Rs 50 for a return trip from Margao-Panjim. Compare this amount with what Mumbaites spent on travelling from Borivli to Churchgate.Goans are spending I hope better sense prevails in our PWD Minister. Manoj Raikar

Re: [Goanet] Father Agnelo
Venerable Father Agnelo de Sousa: Son of Goa *Fr.Ivo da Conceiçao Souza Introduction: We seldom think of our own sons and daughters living a saintly, holy life, with the power of God. Goa has produced marvelous people. We think of Venerable Father Agnelo de Sousa and of Blessed Father Joseph Vaas. Yes, there are many who have not been, and will not be, canonized. Our parents will surely be among the chosen. In spite of our strenuous efforts, Father Agnelo de Sousa is still on the way to he altar. Father Agnelo revealed himself as a shepherd, a preacher, a confessor and an administrator. We shall reflect on his human existence within the Goan context: Anjuna, Rachol and Pilar. His Childhood: Born on January 21, 1869 at 7 p.m. in the ward of Ganvaddi of Anjuna, in the taluka of Bardez, to Miguel Arcanjo Mariano de Sousa and Maria Sinforosa Perpetua Magalhaes, he had to be baptized privately at home soon after his birth, as there was danger for his life. Then on February 13, 1869, he was solemnly baptized with the name of Agnelo Gustavo Adolfo de Sousa, by Fr.Joao Baptista de Sousa, Asst.Parish-priest of Anjuna, with the permission of the Vicar-in-charge, Fr.Valentim Constantino Fernandes. His god-father was Gustavo Adolfo de Frias, from Mapusa, through his proxy, Esmeraldo Felicissimo Jesus de Sousa, from Anjuna, , and the god-mother was Ana Piedade Angelina de Brito, from Anjuna. Since he was born on the day of the feast of St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr, the child was given the name of Agnelo, a little lamb. There is much in the name: Agnelo was gentle, peace-loving, humble, obedient, lover of silence. From among nine children, eight boys and one girl, he was the sixth child of his parents. The atmosphere of faith and love, in which Agnelo grew together with his parents, instilled in him apostolic spirit. His mother would give catechetical instruction to the children of neighbourhood. Agnelo lost his father, when he was only eleven years old (on May 6, 1880), and his mother, two years later, on May 22, 1882. On her deathbed, his mother summoned her children round her and, pointing out to the picture of the Mother of Jesus, told them: My darling children, I am about to leave you for good. From now onwards your true Mother is our Lady, to whom you should turn in all your needs. Agnelo grew in his great devotion to the Virgin Mary. Agnelo studied in the government primary school in the village of Anjuna, where he learnt Portuguese from Fr.Inacio Valeriano Rebelo, with flying colours. One of his uncles, Fr.Lazaro Fortunato Sousa, seeing his zeal in the catechism classes, prophesied: Agnelo will one day be a virtuous Priest and a renowned Preacher. He was an angel of peace among his classmates. Sensing his priestly vocation, his eldest brother, Fr. Manuelinho, asked him regarding priesthood, to which question Agnelo answered affirmatively. Therefore, Fr.Manuelinho sent him for Latin classes, conducted in the parish of Anjuna by Fr. Luis Jose Pais. After two years, he joined the Aulas Filiais (Affiliated Classes) of Rachol Seminary at Mapusa; and, later on, he went to the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol for studies in Theology. He was a proficient and a well-disciplined student. His Priestly Studies: After completing the Theological Course on March 22, 1893, he was invited by Fr.Jose Joaquim Lourenço de Sousa, from Khobravaddo, Calangute, Bachelor in Theology (on 13.3.1897) and his erstwhile professor at Rachol Seminary (1883-1901), to tutor to his nephews at his own house at Calangute. For three years he taught Latin and Portuguese to several children in and around Calangute, without any remuneration, until he moved into the house of his cousin, Felicio Santana de Sousa, at Gauravaddo in Calangute, and continued to teach there, where in August of 1896 he had twenty-five students-ten for Latin from the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, two for Latin from the National Lyceum and thirteen for primary instruction in Portuguese. Only one of them was a girl, studying Latin for Lyceum. He was muttering prayers, whenever he had to address her.(and there is a tradition that he would cover his eyes with umbrella when he had to teach girls.) After teaching for four years in Calangute, Agnelo received the Minor Orders on December 22, 1895, and was ordained Sub-deacon on December 19, 1896. As the Portuguese Government forbade religious societies in Goa, but he ardently desired to join a Religious Order, Agnelo made up his mind to seek admission in the Society of Missionaries of St.Francis Xavier at Pilar. After being admitted as a candidate in the Society of Pilar on July 17, 1897-the feast day of Our Lady of Pilar, patroness of the Convent and of the Society-he was ordained Deacon on December 18, 1897, by the first Patriarch of the East Indies, Archbishop Dom Antonio Sebastiao Valente (1882-1908), at the Convent of St. Monica, Old Goa, and

[Goanet] Mumbai 26/11 victim's dad heard his son's last words
VIDEO: http://ibnlive.in.com/videos/105410/mumbai-2611-victims-dad-heard-his-sons-last-words.html New Delhi: The Mumbai terror attacks will always be a painful memory for some families as their personal losses are insurmountable. One such person is the father of Chef Boris Rego, who was working as a trainee at the Taj, when the terrorists struck that fateful night of November 26. Urbano de Rego, the bereaved man recounts that heart-breaking phone call he got from Boris, not knowing that it would be the last time he would be speaking to his son. Urbano de Rego started his career as a chef in 1971, at The Taj and the famous landmark hotel in Mumbai was like his second home. Whenever I used to travel I would stay in The Taj always. Actually The Taj is my home, says Urbano de Rego. He wanted his younger son Boris to also begin his career at the very same hotel. Boris did not disappoint his father. On November 26, Boris who was the Junior Chef at the Taj Mumbai was on duty when terror struck. I was just surfing channels when I saw the Taj on CNN's screen. I knew instinctively that something was amiss, says Rego. I started watching and I saw smoke on the screen. I phoned my son Boris. He said that - Dada there is a big problem. One of the waiters has been shot, Rego narrates. I said - Baba, what you are doing? You people should run from there. He said that the attackers had gone upstairs and he had hid in the kitchen and later taken some people to the safety of the basement. When I called him again, he said, please do not worry about me. I am fine, you go to sleep. Whatever is happening is on the sixth floor. Do not worry, we are safe in the basement. But the father's hopes were over when next his elder son called his kid-brother in peril. Kevin, Kevin is all the boy could say, said Rego. My elder son almost collapsed hearing the words and said daddy, something is seriously wrong with Boris. I grabbed the phone. I kept on calling him - Baba, Baba...but all he said in the end was Dada, Dada...those were the darkest hours of my life. I must carry on... said Urbano de Rego. Even in his dying breath, his son had called out aloud to him. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/mumbai-2611-victims-dad-heard-his-sons-last-words/105410-3.html
[Goanet] Documentary on Goa rivers to vie for Vasudha Award at Iffi '09
Documentary on Goa rivers to vie for Vasudha Award at Iffi '09 TNN 21 November 2009, 06:04am IST PANAJI: The 40th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) holds special significance for Nalini Elvino de Sousa. The event, which will be hosted a stone's throw away from her Campal production house, will provide her an opportunity to compete for the Vasudha Award with her documentary Rivers of Goa. The 27-minute-long film was earlier aired on the international Portuguese language television channel RTPi in March this year. It is one of the many documentaries my team and I have produced for Contacto Goa that looks at the fascinating trail of Portuguese legacy in Goa, says Nalini, who, incidentally, was born and bred in Portugal, but migrated to Goa in search of her roots. Throwing more light on the film she says, This environmental documentary essentially looks at the rivers of the state as the veins of its economy. Fishing and agriculture depend on the water that vends its way through the state, so do mining and tourism. This documentary underscores the importance of rivers in keeping the heart of Goa beating, she says. Directed and anchored by Nalini, in collaboration with Jude Santos Fernandes, the documentary comprises interviews with environmentalists Claude Alvares, Nirmala Sawant and Rajendra Parrikar among others. It has been produced locally by Nalini's Lotus and Film TV Production. When we initially began airing 'Contacto Goa' on RTPi, our documentaries were produced by a Mumbai-based production team. But, Rivers of Goa is our baby, she beams. The documentary, along with five others, will vie for the Vasudha Award in the environment segment of short films. 'Peace of Mind Guaranteed' by Nalini's Goan counterpart Rajendra Pednekar is also in the race. However, Nalini appears unfazed about the attention her documentary stands to receive at the Iffi. I will be busy during Iffi, but there are many other projects that need my attention. For one, I want to begin collaborating with local TV channels and air documentaries made by my production house. Communicare is also on my priority list, she says. Nalini is president of Communicare Cultural Centre, a Porvorim-based educational project. Communicare, which started off as a Portuguese language kindergarten, now aims at teaching popular foreign languages. Currently, seven languages are being taught at Communicare-Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Hindi, Konkani and Marathi. I plan to raise the number to 28 languages by October 2010, she says. I myself love to learn new things. In fact, I am currently taking piano classes along with my school-going son. After filmmaking, music and reading are my passion, adds Nalini, who also owned a store dealing in Portuguese food, wines and souvenirs in Panaji. Although having come to Goa a few years back, Nalini feels as comfortable here as any other Goan would. I am intrigued by this quaint state and the remnants of the Portuguese legacy it proudly boasts of. I intend to capture all of it on film simply because I would like it to last for an eternity, she says. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Documentary-on-Goa-rivers-to-vie-for-Vasudha-Award-at-Iffi-09/articleshow/5253704.cms

[Goanet] Goa's Intellectuals .....2
During the colonial era i.e. pre 1961 years, the only schools that were available for villagers, were Escolas Primarias, which taught ;pupils how to read and write in Portuguese language, elementary arithmetic and some history of Portugal like O Navegador and O Conquistador. These schoold had four classes, primeira classe, segunda classe, primeiro grau and segundo grau, that is altogether four years of primary school. Each class had a Professor in charge, who was a Licenciado na Pedagogia Infantil from Escola Normal de Panjim. These glamorous intellectuals were called Professores das Escolas Primarias and hailed mostly from bamonn and bhatkar families and hence were lions of the local society. There were a few English medium schools in towns, primary cum secondary, whose teachers were mostly B.A.s and B.Sc.s and who taught in addition to English language , subjects like History , Geography, Algebra, Geometry, Physics and Chemistry but for the Goan society they were ordinary teachers only. Last but not the least , after priests, doctors and teachers, were the Govt. employees and were known as Funcionarios do Governo do Estado da India Portuguesa.

[Goanet] GOAN LADY - FIRST TO ACT ON STATE 22/11/1904
20/11/2009 When the countrys first woman President, Pratiba Devsingh Patil arrives on her first official four day visit to Goa from 21st November, 2009 to 24th November 2009 it would perhaps interest her to know that like her historic accomplishment as a woman --- the first woman to act on stage on 22.11.1904, at a time when such public performances by a woman attracted social stigma and obvious ostracisation from society, was indeed a 23 year lady Goan Maria Regina Fernandes ( born on 16.11.1880 died on 20.12.1908 ). Hailing from village Raia in Salcete, she was married to Joao Agostinho Fernandes a tiatrist hailing from Modsai Margao Salcete .. Joao Agostinho ( born on 14.12.1871 died on 29.08.1947 ) a Konkani playwright (tiatrist) and dramatist who earned the sobriquet “Pai Tiatrist” i.e Father of “tiatr “ wrote nearly 30 original plays unlike others who merely resorted to adaption of plays written in other languages. The seven act play accompanied by 18 side-shows was his format now adapted for staging tiatros by tiatrist (Konkani playwrights ) . He endeavoured to undo the gender inequality and vowed to reverse the role of males who would otherwise perform the role of women in “tiatrs”. Thus .he is credited for creating history by introducing his wife Maria Regina to act on stage in his tiatr “Bhattkara de Panzare-I ( Landlord of Panzare – I) written and directed by him. The show was staged in Gaiety Theatre (now Capitol Cinema, Mumbai ) . Her sterling performance on stage raised eyebrows because no female had until then ever ventured to perform on stage. Even on the Marathi stage no such instance of a woman acting on stage was heard of until several years later. Her performance on stage and the role in the “tiatr” itself won rave reviews and sent shock waves wherever it was staged in places as far as Bhusawal, Igatpuri, Pune and Jhansi . It is a sad commentary that 104 years later on this red letter day (22.11.1904) in the annals of “tiatr” history neither the State Government nor the newly constituted Tiatr Academy of Goa (on 16th February, 2008) have thought it fit to either a) award her posthumously or b) display a portrait of hers in the Tiatr Academy of Goa office for her pioneering role or c) institute an award in her name to encourage women to take up “tiatr” as a profession. “Tiatr” is a form of performing art in Konkani language which is mainly prevalent in the Catholic dominated talukas of Goa and is staged world wide where the Goan community have ventured. Even in the today’s westernized society that has influenced Goan society tiatrs attract huge audiences even though it has not been granted the status of industry. For the records it may be noted that it was only in 1913 that the first woman Bhasmasur Mohini ventured to act in films . Much later in 1932 i.e 28 years later after Maria Regina maiden entry on stage that another Goan Kamalabai Rambhau Gokhale (marital surname ) and daughter of sitar musician Durgabai Kamat from Assonora Bardez Goa ventured to act on Marathi stage. It is hoped that the President of India recommends to the Govt of Goa to do justice to the immortal memory of Ms Maria Regina Fernandes.. GODFREY J. I. GONSALVES, BORDA, MARGAO, 403 602, GOA. [Goanet] Indian govt agrees with me, says India is filthy
To Goanet - News Flash - In a rare display of intelligence and wisdom, the Government of India has officially agreed with what I have been saying the past several years - that India is one giant filthy toilet. Today's TOI reports an Indian govt turkey named Jairam Ramesh declaring: If there is a Nobel Prize for dirt and filth, India will win it, no doubt. Touché! Let us see how many more years India takes to accept my other prescription - that India should wholly focus on building and MAINTAINING clean toilets, both in private and public spaces. The rest will take care of itself. I have to concede, though, that the germ of this idea is Gandhiji's, not mine. Goa was different in this regard, but the Indian govt (with generous support from apathetic Goans) is keen to cure Goa of its clean and calm. Take Azad Maidan in the heart of Panjim, for instance. There is fresh vomit on the TB Cunha memorial, garbage strewn all over the square, loiterers spit and piss there, ghati urchins use the Martyr's monument as their cricket wicket as well as a loo. Yet all of this is invisible to the citizens of Panjim. Even more surprising, it is invisible to the Goan journos who congregate every evening within a stone's throw of the Maidan at Cafe Prakash. Warm regards, r
