[Goanet-News] Goanet highlights: Carnival, Carnival, and Carnival (by Selma Carvalho)
Goanet highlights by Selma Carvalho se...@goanet.org This week's highlight was Carnival, Carnival, and Carnival. The word Carnival comes from 'carn' and 'vale' meaning farewell to the pleasures of the flesh. Watch these spectacular pictures by Colin D'Cruz of Carnival 2010 in Goa. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189959.html Men in Saris? More Carnival revelry captured on video by JoeGoaUK. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189958.html And in case you missed the floats this year, JoeGoaUK captured them on video. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189943.html And yet more Carnival from the camera of Frederick Noronha. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189898.html George Menezes is an extraordinary writer with a literary career spanning several decades. In a piece titled Fare thee well Old Girl, he bids adieu to his dear wife. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189848.html This article by Onilda Fernandes caused a lot of interest and debate about what form of burial is best. Should we take scarce wood along with us? Onilda's article is titled Coffin v/s. cloth and was posted here by Cecil Pinto http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189994.html Bevinda Collaco writes about Goa's politicians and the intricate dance of the middle-class. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/190022.html A wonderfully descriptive article was sent in by Vivek Menezes titled My city is better than yours: Panjim. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189745.html In an article titled Goan Goan, Mahesh Rahman, a Delhi-based journalist looks at the people's movement in Goa. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/190011.html Selma Carvalho in her weekly column looks at the lives of Colonial Clerks and Goan honour. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189942.html In response to Carvalho's column Mervyn Maciel forwards a message from a former British District Commissioner in Kenya. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/190006.html Internet postings have created a new moral responsibility about public behavior. What is written on these forums can exist in cyberspace for 40 years or more. Given this, Gabe Menezes has some thoughts on the subject. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189975.html A khell tiatre is a dying art form in Goa. It is a traveling troupe of performers who stage plays on an open ground with a minimum of costume and backdrop. Much is left to the audience's imagination. At times the audience has to create in their mind entire scenes of houses, roads, even enclosed rooms and much depends on the skill of the actors involved. JoeGoaUK brings us pictures of khell tiatre in action. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189965.html Tony de Sa pays tribute to the freedom fighter Ravindranath Pai Raiturkar. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189940.html An incisive article was sent in by Jason Keith Fernandes on why Goans should own Portugal's Republic centenary celebrations. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189864.html Freddy Fernandes writes why yawning lions should be caged in India. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189754.html Is there a way for us to make the pertinent issues of remote Goan villages more audible? Can we get the youth in these villages involved in disseminating information? Frederick Noronha shares some thoughts. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189736.html Three books were recently in Goa opening a discussion about Goan writing in English. At some time or the other, the world will have to resort to electric cremation for the reasons such as 1) contamination of ground water 2) saving trees 3) saving much needed space. In cities like Mumbai, it is next to impossible to even get a niche (forget about a permanent grave). Bernice Pereira Your Mail works best with the New Yahoo Optimized IE8. [Goanet] Class Distinctions By Bevinda Collaco · o n 15 February 2010
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- http://www.facebook.com/knowprose?v=feedstory_fbid=309867348425#!/note.php?note_id=311321141569 There’s a Mr Moneybags with dubious sources of income who is one of the most pious people I have ever met. His wrist is covered with sacred red threads which never seem to fade, or maybe he gets his threads renewed with every new visit to a temple. There is also a Mrs Pauper who wears ragged dirty dresses three sizes too large for her slight frame, who is most devout. She spends most of her time praying before roadside crosses and in churches. I know both of them rather well and the similarity of thought, word and deed is startling. When Mr Moneybags speaks to me, he speaks of good things. He talks of all the good deeds he has done. He had helped get his neighbour’s daughter a job in the police force. He had given money to a boy who broke his leg in three places to tide him over until he could work again. He had just finished one pilgrimage and was planning to go on another as soon as he finished some pending work. When his employees talk to me, they only speak bad things about Mr Moneybags. He is tight-fisted, mean minded, mean spirited and had a gang of goons on his payroll who could do anything from stoning your house to attacking you with swords and sticks. He ate like a pig and drank like a fish, got into a drunken rage and had a thing for very young women. Mrs Pauper generally wept when she spoke to me. If she was not weeping, she was sighing. She too would speak of good things like how she was struggling to give her family a good life through honest means. That she did not have money but she had God on her side. When her neighbours speak about her, they talk about how she has a filthy tongue in her head, how she abuses them regularly, poisons their domestic animals and birds, how she throws filth in front of their homes. They spoke of how she didn’t have money to feed her family, but she had enough to drink herself into a violent rage every day. And it struck me that both the very rich and the very poor have so much in common. Both rich and poor get a huge amount of freebies. Both belong to privileged sections of society. Mr Moneybags is wooed by the powerful with an eye to his wealth. Mrs Pauper is wooed by the powerful with an eye to her vote. A simple enough concept since using wealth to buy votes leads to more power to the powerful. Mr Moneybags is not in politics; he owns politicians; he dictates policy. Mrs Pauper just has to ask her MLA to allow her to build an extra couple of rooms on a precarious slope. He makes the necessary calls and even builds a retaining wall so that her house and those of her neighbours don’t slide down the hill. The very rich and very poor can break the laws with impunity. They don’t even bother to laugh at CRZ rules; they just build their homes, sprawling or simple and get on with life as they know it secure in the knowledge that no one can touch them. They are dangerous enemies since both resort to extra-judicial activities to sort out issues they may have with others. They think nothing of publicly harassing, abusing or killing an enemy. Their moral standards (or lack thereof) are similar. Crimes of passion, murders of paramours and spouses are common with both classes. And yet they are so devout. Laws, morals, ethics and moderation fall to the lot of the middle class. They cannot afford to break the law because they have too much built up through hard work, to lose. As piety is the armour of the rich and poor, respectability is the armour of the middle-class. The middle class moves in a never ending bourgeois dance between the two other classes. Moving forward always trying to catch up with the very rich. Always looking over their shoulder at the poor, terrified that they will slip backwards into poverty if they don’t work hard enough. Seems like such a waste of time. Shrikant Vinayak Barve Your Mail works best with the New Yahoo Optimized IE8. Get it NOW! http://downloads.yahoo.com/in/internetexplorer/

--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- Albert writes: I cannot understand the big noise of R.Catholics about fasting. Everyone talks about the fast on ash wednesday. when we get up we have a nice breakfast. We must eat less- today is ash wednesday fasting day. then in the afternoon we eat rice with fish- today is fasting day eat less. In the evening we have a nice dinner. Today is fasting day eat less. what is the big noise about it ? all tiatr and khell tiatrs . Jesus fasted for 40 days. The bible does not speak how he fasted. He never told or ordered his disciples to fast. Why does the church order the christians to fast ? why it is published in the newspapers ? because this fast is a first scene of our tiatr. When I attended a retreat in Potta they requested us to fast one day. It was optional. Those who were not fasting could get coupons for food. We went without eating till around 5 pm .There were prayer programme as usual but less in number and people prayed .we only drank water and at five in the evening we broke our fast. Since it was voluntary it had a meaning. The Lord Jesus said There is no need to fast when the bridgroom is with you. Those who fast are not followers of christ because they are anxiously waiting for the second coming when they are not satisfied with the first coming. I always pray to Jesus that his second coming should not have a crown of thorns on his head and a crucifix on his shoulders. His first coming was a waste of time because love is replaced by hate. unselfishness is replaced by selfishness, pride and greed. God has been replaced with idols. Crown of thorns by crown of pearls. Stable with palaces. wooden stool with a rich throne. Who is your God today ? is it a human being or the spirit of God ! If it is human being or earth that I should say you will die and go down along with the earthly crowns. Don't we find palaces sinking down in the earth in the past ? The humble few words (“Call them back”) of our Bishop made me to turn back and see deep inside who are with me in the way. By name Man was called by God in the very beginning. But today God is searching for Man.. Luke : 10 : 20 – To get the deeper meaning of this scripture in life. Help me to pray with you (Church). This week you’ll receive announcement call. [Goanet] BRIAN READS AT ST STEPHENS COLLEGE, DELHI
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- A day before Ash Wednesday, Brian shared his poems with students of St Stephen’s college at the SCR lawns, St Stephen’s College, Delhi University, North Campus, New Delhi. As daylight dripped into dusk, students silently filed in and occupied chairs – as if in a performance play – as Brian softly plucked ‘Greensleeves’ – the Elizabethen tune -- on his classical guitar. Robinson Raju, Final Year BA student at Stephen’s and the coordinator of the event, introduced Brian as a traveller-poet at 6.30 p.m. -- the scheduled time for the event to begin. In tribute to the synergy which made the gathering possible, Brian opened with the hymn ‘You are my hiding place’ on the guitar. BLOG : The first clutch of poems were from Brian’s blog and included the Udaipur/Jaipur poems (Forthcoming in Journal of English Studies, University of Kashmir, Srinagar, 2010) and ‘Morning Walk- Delhi South’ and ‘Autumn Woman’ -- two poems recently published in the debut issue of South Asian Ensemble (Canada, Autumn 2009). Brian invited the students to contribute to the Ensemble for which he is on the advisory board. The Stephen’s reading of 16 February 2010 is Brian’s 90th blog at www.lastbustovasco.blogspot.com POEMS for CHILDREN: ‘Hymn to Ravi’ (Published by Oxford University Press, Delhi, 2009) and ‘Barefoot Child’ (OUP, 2007) were read by Brian, bringing up the rear with ‘Childhood’ (Parmal, Goa, 2009). The little boy in the poem who pushes his tyre up the hillside and watches it roll down with glee recalled, observed Robinson, the myth of Sisyphus. LAST BUS to VASCO (Self-published 2006, reprinted 2007): Next, the group set sail for Goa via Brian’s first poem ‘Requiem to a Sal’ (1989). ‘On the Run’ and ‘Sea in the Sky’ brought giggles with its staccato style leading on to the lyrical ‘Sonya’ and the acceptance of ‘Bells of St Andrews.’ ‘Fugitive’ was recited in Portuguese followed by the translation. ‘Praxis’ recalled the search for the poetic voice. Social issues were showcased in ‘Londa Station.’ The last poem in this section was ‘A Peace of India’ which was promptly followed by a Portuguese song ‘En Costa tua Cabecinha’ and the riotous Konkani medley ‘Undra Mhojea Mama.’ A PEACE OF INDIA (Forthcoming): A request for a poem from Bihar took us to Brian’s poem on the Sonepur mela and its ‘absent elephants.’ The pungency of ‘Kamariya lachke lupa lup’ made many blush. ‘Kali Gandak’ on the ‘black river’ followed. Nainital was next with the pathos of ‘Gargia’ lamenting the tragic death of a village girl to a speeding mini-truck in the hills: ‘You went away /when we came to love you’, the first lines, made a deep impression on the listeners. ‘Kundun’ an early poem, written in Dharamshala, evoked ‘The oracle [which] warns / of imminent danger.’ ‘Deep South’ took us all South of the Cauvery and a memorializing of the tsunami dead. SAHITYA AKADEMI (2004): The moment of truth in Brian’s poetic career was the 14 poems published in the SA journal Indian Literature. From here Brian read the much-loved ‘I am not alone’ and ‘Traveller’- a manifesto to his destiny. Fellow-travellers were impressed with the plenitude of Brian’s themes. Among his influences Brian mentioned, TS Eliot, Yeats, Pessoa, Sofia Andresen, and a host of Romantic music composers with Schumann leading the charge. ‘Do you write full-time?’ one student asked. Brian replied that he need to work so that he could travel. Asked where he saw himself in the tradition of Indian poetry, Brian replied, ‘I enjoy writing. Let’s leave the theorizing to someone else.’

[Goanet] ASH WEDNESDAY
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- The celebration of Ash Wednesday sets in a period of Lent, a time of purification that invites all Christians to renounce evil, turn to God, reconcile with one's fellowmen and build harmony with the entire creation. It is marked by prayer, fasting and good works that enable Christians to bring about an 'exodus' , a crossover from the life of slavery, of sin, to a life of freedom and authenticity of being a child of God. This call to authentic freedom aptly begins with the ritual of putting on the ashes that symbolize the finitude and mortality of human life and the need to be redeemed by the mercy of God. It also has an ecological dimension as the sacred words: Remember man you are dust and to dust you will return (Gen.3:19), firmly express the solidarity of humanity with the entire creation. The symbol of ashes makes Ash Wednesday a celebration of a call to an authentic freedom as a child of God as it inaugurates a season of Lent that offers each year a 40- day period to passover from death to life, sin to freedom, discord to reconciliation, hatred to love, selfishness to sharing and from despair to hope. The 40 days of renewal equal to a kyriological moment of intense grace that invites Christians to slow down the pace of the journey of their lives, look at the bigger picture and illumine and ennoble their lives through the experience of God's mercy. It is a time to look back and to look around and to carve a future path of life through a look ahead in the light of Christ. That is why Christians consider these 40 days of fast as a way of the cross wherein they are invited to contemplate on the mystery of the crucified saviour and experience the mercy and the love of God communicated through the passion of Christ on the cross and move through his death and resurrection to the authentic freedom of a child of God. How are we to take this journey or the way of the cross in our times? We begin this journey t hrough an existential look at human life. Humans have a tendency to fall away from their authentic self into a 'they self'. Often we find our self falling into a 'crowd' as we blindly follow a way of life designed for us by forces that chase their own vested interests. Falling into the 'they self' has materialized and comsumerized us in our predominantly secularized world. This has led humans to identify with 'being' as 'having'. As a result, to be human is thought to be the same as to have material possessions. Hence, humans spend their lifetime seeking money, power and the things they can offer. Lent calls Christians to a deep understanding of this tendency of falling into the 'they self' and exhorts them to begin the return journey to the authentic self. The trap of sin can be seen in our times as a temptation of mixing 'being' with 'having'. Hence, Lent becomes a challenge to imitate the Son of God and accept his beatitudes. The beatitudes are 'be-attitudes', the attitudes 'to be' authentically human. The challenge is 'to be'… to be poor, to be honest, to be simple, to be caring, to be forgiving, to be serving… This return to the authentic self is deeply embedded in the spirit of Lent. It is ingrained in its penitential as well as baptismal character. Thus, Lent as a whole is a return, a re-turn, turn to the authentic self, to the true identity of being a child of God that Christians believe to have become at the time of their baptism. The innocent freedom of the child of God that is taken away by sin can be rediscovered by being like Christ, the son of God. Therefore, this return to the authentic self can be seen as a return to compassion and non-violence of thought and action. Hence, Lent can be seen as a call to accept and follow a green way of life so that we can humanize everything through our thought and action. While Lent has largely encouraged us to follow the via negative, the way of not doing, we are certainly encouraged to be more positive in our times. Hence, in the context of our quest for a green Lent, it becomes a challenge to seek alternatives for plastics, reduce the use of paper, fight pollution of all kinds, use organic vegetables, show care to the environment, use composting and other bio-friendly methods of waste management, confess your green sins, work for eco-justice, walk more and use public transport, replace regular light bulbs with energy-saving compact bulbs and turn off lights when not in use. These green resolutions are very much in accordance with the spirit of Lent. Led by this eco-sensitivity, we can root ourselves in an eco-spirituality that can make us compassionate not only to nature but to every fellow pilgrim on the face of

[Goanet] Of Coffins and death announcements.....
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- Hold it there. This is all complicated if not sensitive. Firstly, what is the deal with writing of the death announcements. One is hardly keeping with the Navh*nd Engleesh by saying, O Lord I am coming home... What? Which home? Say, have real estate prices dropped somewhere? And then, what if you are a Goan rascal who is booked a place with all the fire, rage etc (it sounds fun if you ask me). Then, instead of saying '...funeral leavs residence at... whats all the fuss...sounds like there will be a 21 gun salute of something. Incidentally, from now on, the funeral announcements should mention the type of coffin (only a suggestion): O Lord I am coming home..: Death announcement, Bostiao passed away yesterday in his armchair, leavs behind . Coffin: cloth. (I'll stay away). Here is why. Have you been to a funeral where the body parts moved? Well, I have. No names mentioned here; I don't wish to piss off anyone and scare off Joe-Goa-UK-Utorda-Majorda. I was at the wake and comforting the dead man's (the village ploughman) young wife...when his leg stuck out of the cloth coffin. Really. My mouth went dry. The mourning woman shrieked, he's back from the dead. Holy terror. But naturally, I made a quick exit. Another time, I happened to comfort a dead man's daughter when the chaps hand moved and stuck out of the cloth coffin. Naka re saaiba. And then there is a now well-known case of man back from the dead: Francis-Manuel (pronounced Franc-Manel, also a ploughman) from Baretto (pronounced Baret) vaddo whose look-alike was given a bur rial, but naturally a costly case of mistaken identity. **Gabriel Garcia Marquis'es brilliant novella 'the Leaf Storm' has an agonizingly long description of a funeral, if I remember correctly** Aye, the Irmao from Moira who wants to go in all-white instead of his Reid Dorji suit, Paul Smith red on pink socks (you Moidakars have a thing for socks it seems),Gucchi shoes and gelled hair: what if they mistake you for an arab up there?Just a thought. Or if you get off the plane from Mississauga, take a welcome to Goa detour. An earlier poster had mentioned developing Goa: what? You out of your mind? Develop for what? Parrikar parri...@yahoo.com wrote: --- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- To Goanet - My letter in the Herald. See - http://oheraldo.in/newscategory/Letters/13 For some reason, Herald has titled it Daily Constitutional. I do not know their thinking behind it, but I would indeed recommend a daily early morning constitutional (used here for its other meaning) to Dr. Rebello along Goa's waterlines, fields, lakes, even the airport road, so that he can see the hundreds of defecating migrants himself. And someday he should take a constitutional through the Chimbel slum, which, by the way, is now like a favela like the ones in Rio de Janeiro. (The Brazilian govt has no control over favela territory.) The unedited version of the letter below: There is an old saying that patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel. Apropos of Indians, we must replace patriotism with Constitution. When an Indian is cornered in an argument or caught peddling humbug, you can be sure to find him hiding behind the Constitution. You can also be sure that he has never read the Constitution. And so it is with Dr Oscar Rebello, who lectures Goans (see Herald, Feb 12) about the rights of migrants by invoking the Constitution. But alas, Dr Rebello dispenses half-truths. The Indian Constitution does not give migrants the right to come into Goa and squat on footpaths and public spaces, or to use public spaces to loiter litter, or to usurp public land and create slums, or to defecate and sleep in public areas. Migrants do not have the right to vote either without satisfying certain requirements - and as is well-known, migrant voter fraud is widepsread in Goa. Although Dr Rebello seems to have developed a recent crush on the Constitution his knowledge of constitutional matters is less than meagre. There is a sub-clause in the Indian constitution that leaves open the possibility for states to enact laws to restrict inward migration. Goan attorneys need to seriously study this option. Goa is already bursting at the seams, and we have finite resources. If we are to preserve our quality of life, and it we are to prevent Goa from turning into another urban Indian nightmare, we must reject Dr Rebello's muddleheaded screed. I have laid out my case in a column in this daily (May 2008) for restricting the uncontrolled inflow of migrants (available now on the web). r

Maseeh Rahman While this is a romantic view of Goa, the writer fails to answer the question --- why are Goans selling their land ? How many Goans dont want to sell their land ? Unless, Goans --- and many are living not even a hand-to-mouth existence --- are given jobs or work hard or find a way of making a good living in an alternate fashion, they will continue to sell their land to the highest bidder. The problem of creating jobs is a difficult one. It also means Goans will have to confront some hard truths like give up their susegaad lifestyle. So, it looks to me it is better to create a romantized notion and live in a delusional world, as is done by this writer. samir

Does anyone know if there is a rule that females cannot be pall bearers in the Roman Catholic funeral tradition? . As regards your choices of how your body should be disposed of once you konk off, I approve of the first two. The third one: Burial in a bamboo basket I am not too sure about. Would this not possibly lead to a plague? Anyway, don't trouble yourself too much about this - the point is merely academic. The other issue you raise - about women not being pall bearers at funerals - is to do with our being converts. As you no doubt are aware, women are not supposed to be present at cremations. This is a fact even today: women are not seen at cremations - unless we are talking about Indira or Sonia Gandhis. In fact in the past even Christian women would not go to funerals. Forget about being pall bearers. I'm talking of pre - 1970s times. Nowadays Christian women go to funerals. In fact in my village the chances are that there will be more women than men at a funeral. Therefore in principle I guess there will be no objection to them being pall bearers. Just as there there is no objection to them giving communion. I presume that the only reason that they do not want to volunteer to be pall bearers is because coffins tend to be pretty heavy and they would rather prefer to avoid this chore. Still, sooner or later they will have to do this. The population of Goan Christians is going down at a fairly rapid rate. Just incidentally, I remember how, when my mother died, and her body was brought home, there was no one to take her from the ambulance to my house. Some ghantis (bless Rajan Parrikar and Arwin Mesquita) happened to passing by. I don't know who they are but they, along with me and the ambulance driver, carried her body to my house. --- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- I read with interest Cecil's comments on coffin v/s. cloth and would like to make a few comments. While I fully agree that we should gradually do away with wooden coffins, I believe that it will take a long long time to get accustomed to this. I too wish that after my death, I would prefer cremation in an electric crematorium which is instant, hygienic and environmentally friendly. Apart from the savings, I would wish this money could be donated to charity where it could be used to feed orphans or elderley and surely they would pray for the departed. I would like to go a step further that to make things easier to do away with wooden coffins, each parish church should keep 1 or 2 aluminium coffins which could be loaned and used for any deceased member of the parish. This could be optional as many atleast for the moment would still prefer wooden coffins. Lastly I was shocked that there were some objections when a Goan Roman Catholic female was the pall bearer of her father's funeral. If this is true then this is discrimination. After all if the son has the privilege or right to be the pall bearer why should the daughter be prevented? We are born to the same parents. Surely we live in a modern society where we all are born equal and die equal. I believe there should be nothing against a woman being the pall bearer at funerals. [Goanet] An Open Letter to the Hon'ble Education Minister
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- An Open Letter to the Hon'ble Education Minister of Goa From Mr. Thalmann P. Pereira Advocate Rani Pramila Arcade 18th June Road Panaji, Goa. Tel. 2427582 e-mail: thalm...@sancharnet.in To The Hon'ble Education Minister Government of Goa Secretariat Porvorim Bardez, Goa. 17-02-2010. Subject : Dangerous RTI Query Dear Sir, 1. This Open Letter is addressed to you in the context of some letters written by the officials of the Directorate of Education addressed to the Principals / Headmasters of all Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools in Goa. 2. The first letter in question is from the Assistant Director of Education (Adm.), Panaji, Goa, bearing Ref. no. 28-263-Adm.I/B/2009/Part-file/II/53 dated 07-01-2010, by which a letter dated 30-12-2009 received from Mr. Damodar (Damu) G. Naik, Hon'ble M.L.A. of Fatorda Constituency under the Right to Information Act, 2005, has been forwarded to the respective Zonal Offices of the Directorate for onward transmission to all the Principals / Headmasters of all Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools in Goa, with directions to submit the required information directly to Mr. Damodar G. Naik. 3. As it appears that the Principals / Headmasters of various Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools in Goa were distinctly uncomfortable giving the desired information, the Directorate has issued yet another letter bearing Ref. no. ACAD/R.T.I.-Act/2009/172 dated 21-01-2010 by which the very same letter dated 30-12-2009 received from Mr. Damodar (Damu) G. Naik, has been again forwarded, this time directly, to all the Principals / Headmasters of all Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools in Goa, with directions to submit the required information directly to Mr. Damodar G. Naik. 4. Non-compliance with the provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005, is a very serious matter having penal consequences. 5. It therefore ostensibly appears that the officials of the Directorate of Education are very conscious of their duties under the Act and have therefore forwarded the letter from the Hon'ble M.L.A. to the Principals / Headmasters for compliance. 6. The problem lies with the mechanical fashion in which the officials of the Directorate of Education appear to be functioning with absolutely no dedication to their larger public duty to thoroughly vet a request before considering it as worthy. 7. This becomes clear when one reads the letter dated 30-12-2009 written by Mr. Damodar (Damu) G. Naik, Hon'ble M.L.A. of Fatorda Constituency under the Right to Information Act, 2005. The purpose of this Open Letter addressed directly to you is precisely to lay bear this letter dated 30-12-2009 as well to alert you directly to your constitutional duties in the matter, without the intermediation of any of your subordinate officials who cannot be trusted to advise you correctly, given the sorry state of affairs which reveals total non-application of their minds to such a serious issue. 8. Let us therefore begin by quoting extensively from the letter dated 30-12-2009 bearing Ref. No. -nil- written by Mr. Damodar (Damu) G. Naik, Hon'ble M.L.A. of Fatorda Constituency, addressed to the Public Information Officer, Education Department, Panjim-Goa, with the Subject caption Issue of Information under Right to Information Act and which reads as follows:- Dear Sir, Kindly give me the following information under Right to Information Act. 1) Names of the students studying in Goa in Xth and XIIth std. along with their perfect postal residential address, date of birth and contact number like parents mobile or students mobile / Landline Number etc. 2) Names of the students studying in 1st to 4th Class in and around Margao Schools with their postal addresses and contact number, D.O.B. Hope you will do the needful at the earliest. Thanking you, sd/- Damodar (Damu) G. Naik MLA FATORDA. 9. No wonder the various Principals / Headmasters of the Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools in Goa were distinctly uncomfortable giving the desired information. But the very fact that the officials of your Department have thought it fit to forward this letter not once but twice with clear-cut directives, only goes to show that they have made up their minds that such information can be given to anybody who applies for it. 10. In our humble opinion the giving of such information is not only illegal but downright dangerous. 11. We shall not even bother to waste your valuable time with any allegations about the political affiliations of the Hon'ble MLA of Fatorda Constituency since he belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: The 'Poilo Paus' man is back... (Oslando De Souza, interviewed by FN)
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- The 'Poilo Paus' man is back... From Colaba in Mumbai, Oslando has long been a beacon for promoting Goan traditional song and music. He describes himself as a Goan folklorist, singer-guitarist, composer, music arranger and conductor all rolled into one. In past decades, Goans would remember the nostalgia and pride with which the Saligaokar created popular songs like 'Poilo Paus' (The First Rains). Probably only when the heart yearns from afar for tiny Goa can such music pour forth. Recently, the multi-faceted artiste came out with a new book, titled 'The Christian Goan Konkani Folk and Art Songs: A New Perspective'. Below are excerpts of an interview with FREDERICK NORONHA: FN: Please tell us about the book? How would you describe it? The book consists of three parts. The first is an essay on what Christian Goan folk-music is all about. What you always wanted to know about the origins of the Dulpod, the Mando and the Dekhni, but didn't know whom to ask. All this is answered in this essay. Part 2 contains the music and lyrics of the most popular traditional folk and art songs, grouped under several ready to sing choicest selections of medleys. Part 3 includes the music and lyrics of original compositions of Goan music by me. The price of the book will be Rs. 500. For a big book of over 300 pages and containing over 100 songs, it is reasonably priced. FN: What prompted you to do it? What prompted the writing of this book was my aim to collect the results of my life-long passion to perform and study diverse genres of Goan folk music and convey the knowledge so gained to all music lovers. FN: Whom do you think would find the book most useful? This book will be most useful to all professional musicians as well as all amateur singers who enjoy folk music. The audience I have in mind is not just restricted to Goa and the rest of India but global wherever Goan diaspora is spread. FN: Does it fill an existing gap in the world of Goan music? This is the only book that addresses the problem of all singers of finding music in suitable keys for average range of voices and the big problem of finding ready to sing selection of songs that can be sung as a long medley. This book offers the singers several choice selections in an unique presentation never published before. FN: Please tell us a bit about your own earlier work in music. I fondly remember Poilo Paus... but there's obviously many gaps in my knowledge... My releases are: Poilo Paus (The First Rains) released by H M V (1971); New Konkani Hits released by H M V (1975); Soul OF Goa released by Oriental Melodies (1978); Goa Meu Amor released by VP Sinari Co. (1981); Boas Festas (Happy Feast) by VP Sinari Co. (1984); and Nostalgia by VP Sinari Co. (1991). In addition, I regularly participated in All India Radio broadcasts notably in All-India and All-Asia Folk Music Radio Festivals. Meanwhile I found time to produce and successfully release two English albums -- Family Fiesta (party songs for family occasions) and Christmas Fever (Christmas carols). FN: We have been missing your work for some years now. Why the long gaps between your creative output? Was there any special reason? The only long gap is between the the last recorded release and now. That is because with the last release I had already completed the full gamut of the best known folk-song tradition of Goa. FN: What are your future plans? I have put my lifetime knowledge and three-and-half years labour of love into this book. My future plans are just to relax and enjoy the fruits of my labour! FN: Who else was involved in this book project, and what was the most difficult part of putting it together? For this project I was ably supported by my two children. The most difficult part was to get music (with piano parts and choral arrangements) computerised for over 100 songs. --- Contacts: Oslando De Souza, Meherzin Bldg. It also has an ecological dimension as the sacred words: Remember man you are dust and to dust you will return (Gen.3:19), firmly express the solidarity of humanity with the entire creation.. --- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- Coffin v/s clothes (to save trees or money?) No Caixao? How would I know the deceased person’s age? While his body still in the church (for final rites) don’t we go out at the Church door to have a look at the coffin’s lid or ‘tamp’ or ‘danknnem’ for his age? http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextras/4365134620/sizes/l/ Are we doing this to save trees? Then what about the ‘furis’ or the wooden crosses in the ‘Ximitor’ or cemetery? I had to order another one as my mother cross was missing from the cemetery just after one year. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk1/2880394088/sizes/l/ Are we doing this to save money? What about the expensive obituary advertisements? Once, it was Navhind Times that was leading but now it is Herald. Tiatr or Orbits ads? Then it must be H. The difference between the two is the price tag. e.g. A credit size or ATM card size (5cms x 2cols) ad would cost Rs. 2500 for death announcement. Rs. 5000 if in colour (Front and back page extra). But the same for the tiatr it would be Rs.600 only in both bw n colour. Recently, I visited H office, to give a small ad to my departed friend and it cost me Rs.1500 (6cm x 1 col). There I said to my self ‘H taking (stealing) my photos for free and look, here I pay Rs.1500’ Don’t we read variety of funeral ads ‘slogans’? In your hands, oh Lord, I command my spirit (Look who’s talking here – not the deceased but his family) One year with the Lord (As if the deceased family is so sure about it) Two years in the Garden of rest (as if we never retired on earth) Three years in the God’s Paradise (after spending 70 years in Goa, which itself a paradise) Why can’t they just say ‘Death’ or ‘month’s’mind’ or ‘death anniversary’? [Goanet] Distinguished career cut short
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- Wing Commander Oswald (Ossie) de Abreu, had a distinguished service in the air force and was shortly to receive promotion to the higher rank of Group Captain, when he was killed after his IAF MiG-27 fighter jet crashed in West Bengal on Tuesday, Born on November 29, 1970 to banker father Vincent and his wife Rufina, Oswald completed his high school from Don Bosco’s in Panjim and then proceeded to study a degree programme in Zoology from Dhempe College in Miramar. Soon after graduation, Oswald answered the Combined Defence Services Entrance exam and was chosen for training as flying officer with IAF, a rare and envious feat in those days. Upon completion of training at the Air Force Academy at Dundigal near Hyderabad, Oswald was commissioned as a fighter pilot in IAF on June 21, 1993. During his tenure, Oswald flew various fighter aircrafts like MiG-21s, MiG-27s and the trainer aircraft HJT-16. He was a Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) and trained young cadets to become pilots in IAF. For his hard work and dedication towards service, Oswald had received commendation by the Chief of Air Staff on January 26, 2000. He was a graduate of Defence Services Staff College, which is an esteemed defence services institution. He was chosen to lead a delegation of IAF to the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) to view and fly their fighter aircraft. A press note from RSAF stated that a delegation from the IAF, led by Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu, visited the RSAF from November 5–6, 2008 as part of the IAF – RSAF Fighter Exchange visit. The delegation visited Flight Simulator Centre, where they viewed the Operational Flight Trainer and the Air Mission Trainer (AMT). They also visited Air Force Museum and 140SQN where they viewed the RSAF’s F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft and were briefed on the squadron’s operations. More recently, he served as Flight Commander of 222SQN, aptly named ‘The Tigersharks’, an esteemed Fighter Squadron of IAF. Their motto ‘Vinashay Dushkrtam’ means ‘Destroyer of the Evil’, because 222 Squadron is equipped with the MiG-27 aircraft and is capable of inflicting a mortal blow to its prey without remorse of fear. Oswald was shortly to receive promotion to the higher rank of Group Captain, before tragedy struck his aircraft on February 16 at his squadron’s home base in Hashimara, West Bengal. He is survived by wife Janice and children Nadia and Nathan, brother Orlando in Taiwan and sisters Claret and Marina in Canada and UK respectively. Oswald made his home in Goa at ‘Oceanview’, his waterfront cottage at Betim, across the Mandovi from Panjim. It is from here that his mortal remains will begin their last flight for a ceremonial state funeral and interment. _ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. [Goanet] Fwd: Samir Kelekar and his problem with Rajan's citizenship
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- Samir Kelekar wrote: Let me clear this point. I am going to Digambar Kamat as a CM of a state that I belong to and I care about. I am spending my hard earned money to make several trips?to Goa?so that I can create jobs in Goa, certainly a much better endeavour than throwing some pounds as charity and giving one's services to a foreign country. Certainly, the job that I am doing or trying to do is much more challenging and difficult than doing a mere job in the UK. Besides, in India it is very tough to make ends by itself.?I am working in such circumstances. Response: I am glad we have established one thing. Your trips to goa are not paid for by Digambar Kamat. You actually pay for your journey. How admirable? It must be extremely challenging to persuade Digambar to part with some money as sops, particularly when it is tough for you to make ends meet? My heart bleeds for you I dont want complaints by someone who doesnt work in my country and all he does is throws some crumbs at Goa. What Goa needs is valuable time of people, and I am spending it. First, you did not want Rajan's political activities because he has American citizenship, now you do not want complaints from me because I do not work in India. What next Mr Kelekar? shall we make a rule: you qualify to write, complain or say open your mouth only if you beg for favours to Digambar? Only someone with a mentality of abeggar and a useless one at that would talk of genuine help that I and several other NRGs including goa sudharop offer as crumbs. what we offer is help to the needy, we do not throw anything at people in need, let alone crumbs. NRGs can help in the work that I am doing by giving business to companies in Goa. If you can help in that, let us work together. Otherwise, if you cant, at least dont throw spanners in the work. The dire need for Goa right now is jobs in? a sustainable area. Goans would be pleased with the efforts that you are putting in with digu's help to create jobs. Good luck to you. MARG spends government money for a noble purpose, and not for personal luxuries of my father. We are both working in our country where we are not thrown big money at for rendering our services unlike you. I have conscicously decided to work in my country unlike you, even when I have an opportunity to work abroad. It is obvious that whenever and for whoever you worked in america, you obviously had the 'boot-licking' experience and therefore it is no surprise that you let go the opportunity to work abroad. 1) the accident numbers have decreased. 2) It is not an easy process and a very tough challenge. Someone has to do the hard work. You are not doing it,my father is doing single handedly at such ripe age. Digambar Kamat has been appointed because my father is now past 80 and he wants the work to continue. If you come and are ready to take the challenge rather than raking in money there and throwing crumbs to Goa, you are welcome. samir I looked at the officila statistics for deaths due to accidents in goa. It wou;d be helpful to know for how long MARG has been getting money from the government. In 2001, there were 222 deaths on Goan roads. In 2009, the number was 310. In 2008, it was 318 and 2007 it was 322. On traffic inspector told Times of India reporter last month that this small reduction was because of traffic police persuading PWD to make changes to certain dnagerous sections of roads in at least 100 different places. Lastly, for your amusement, I have pasted a letter published by MARG in Jan 2003 when the number of deaths on goan roads had gone to 260 from the previous figure of 222. Dear Brothers and Sisters, The accidents on the roads of Goa have crossed the limit and created havoc among Goans. They killed 260 persons and injured more than a thousand on Goan roads last year! There is no terrorist activity in Goa, nor any sort of earthquake, yet thousands of families are just weeping over the loss of their dear ones, who have been killed, perhaps with no fault of theirs. This is just unbearable ! Then what must we do? It is high time for us, the citizens, not only to ponder over the situation but also act. Pointing a finger to the authorities or the Government does not bring the situation near to a solution. The accidents and consequent fatalities are increasing over the years. We, kind and large hearted Goans, need to come together and shout halt to the massacre on our roads, for which we the citizens, directly or indirectly, are also responsible. Let us be together to wipe of the tears of those who have suddenly lost their dear ones, light a candle in their memory, and decide what we can do at least to minimize the number deaths on our roads. Dear citizens,

[1] I'm sure there are others too. Accurate performance measurement is most likely difficult in this instance. Injuries and fatalities on Goa's roads have increased over the years. 321 fatalities on Goa's roads in 2009. [2] The number of vehicles have increased and so have the number of vehicular trips on Goa's roads. Traffic jams, unseen 10 years ago, are the norm now. In general, road-width has not increased for over 35 years. With Bajaj ceasing production of scooters later this year (if not already), its obvious more cars are being sold in India and road-space is not increasing proportionally. Below I have selected a few... Female, 45+, USA, non-practicing Catholic I always thought that funerals should be according to the wishes of those left behind (music choices, burial, ash dispersion, etc) rather than the person being buried/cremated, so as to give comfort to those who will really need the comfort. - Female, 40+, Goa, non-practicing Catholic personally i want to be cremated in a crematorium near the sea , or an electric one , i dont mind either way, it really doesnt matter once you're dead, does it ? but i want lots of lovely colourful clothes at my cremation and feni poured over me, while i burn :) - Male, 35+, Goa, non-practicing Catholic Interesting that you should send me this. Many years ago, I'd read an interview with some personality who claimed he wished to be buried without a coffin and have a tree planted over his grave. Building on this, I came up with the brilliant idea of having an orchard cemetery, where people would be buried without coffins, and a fruit tree of their choice would be planted over their remains; all fruit eventually harvested would be given back to the family of the deceased. This would also enable one to, as Jesus says in the New Testament to know [one] by [his/her] fruits! Also... I would suggest you discard option number two - burning is such a waste of good organic material! Either donate your body to science or give back to the earth. The chilling announcement came on WNYC FM as we exited the Lincoln Tunnel onto the New Jersey turnpike. Cocky roared and I swerved sharply as we sped from New York to North Carolina. Convicted Goanese fraudster Mauvin Bobo was knocked down in the prison yard at Butner today, by fellow felon, Bernie Madoff! I sighed, Hope he'll be glad to see us, Shrove Tuesday and all! Bobos! cried Cocky, On Pancake Tuesday for.Mauvin Bobo! Shrove or Pancake Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday - for Christians worldwide, the start of the forty-day Lenten fast before Easter. Bobo is a Goan pancake, and we carried a stash for Mauvin. Eight hours thru a bunch of '95 Interstates into Durham, and an x-ray search later, Mauvin glowered at us at the visitors station. That bloody phony ponzi Bernie, nearly killed me! he croaked. Bribe him with bobos, you sad disgrace to Goans! went Cocky. Rich, I thought, Mauvin calling Bernie a phony. On the crim advice of a Texan Goan quack friend, Mauvin had tried to pass himself off as a public health official, trying an extortion racket on New Jersey motels. Those Gujjus saw quicker through his fake badge - Public Health Of New York (PHONY) - than our poor Bobo, and the NYPD graduated him quickly from the Lower Manhattan MCC to Butner. He boxed me in the goolies! cried Bobo. I'm so important now! Impotent, lol..impotent! squawked Cocky, Get it freakin' right! Why you bring me these stupid bobos! screamed Bobo, instead of an iron-file, or a little RDX stuffed in our dear Goan sausages! The guy blew my breath away. The sheer effrontery, nay audacity. When bobos harden, yelled Cocky, you use them as missiles! A prison guard stepped up menacingly. A light snow fell outside. I felt sorry for Mauvin. A small-time petty offender, the vagaries of the recession had ensnared him in the nefarious web of a fake Goan godman, a latter-day avatar of Maharishi or Osho Rajneesh. Hasn't ol' Sontos been to see you? I said, He put you here!! Mayhem. Cocky began yelling blue murder to the high heavens. Don't ever mention that Nazi butcher, that Mengele! she cried. A notorious torturer, the godman had started a life of quackery as one Hell'ikar, but quickly changed his moniker to an ecclesiatical if dubious, Sontos Holykar. To Mauvin he was the perfect Fagin. Holykar established the Bhailo School of Madisin Gardens, which was no more than a crude avian-torture facility, attracting the attention of animal activists for its terrible atrocities on birds like finches, who had blunt needles cruelly rammed down their brains in the name of science and Mammon. I felt Cocky's great pain. I'll rip Sontos' stupid bat-ears! cried Mauvin Due to him, Bernie's burning me, Carmine's corraling me, and Omar's 'oming in on me! Besides Madoff, other notorious names at Butner included crime-boss Carmine Persico, and Omar Abdel-Rahman, Al-Quaeda bomb plotter. I've been given kitchen-duty now, and been threatened with death if I don't produce sexy Carnival dishes, like in Rio! quavered Mauvin. The three days before Lent are a riotous Carnival in Christian climes. I need a signature dish, wept Bobo, All I know is chilly chicken! No, I said, Carnival is all raw meat, gladiators, beef, carnivores! But I'm not a cook! Mauvin cried, Just a Con!! Whatya suggest?? Chilli Con Carne! screeched Cocky,Or should I say...Chilli Kon..kani! I dissolved into a paroxysm of laughter and even the warders guffawed. Fine, said Bobo, but they want a really Brazilian dish! Something that brings you the heady magic of the rhumba, and salsa, and! And you're just a South Indian con, I agreed, so you can do a.. Brazilian...sambhar! screeched Cocky, and we collapsed hysterically. Re: [Goanet] UK Parliamentary review / US Senate report
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- I thought Gabriel had claimed in his previous post that he would not post any more on this subject. Here is his exact quote: No more from me on this subject, whatever the outcome of the investigations. Let truth prevail. Gabriel de Figueiredo Please see http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-February/189934.html But putting that aside, the post appended below is another piece of damning evidence that his is a political/ideological campaign against climate science and scientists, not any genuine skepticism towards scientific data and interpretations. As you can see, he is still not able to provide actual graphs and numbers contradicting the scientific data on global warming, CO2 rise and the greenhouse effect. All he can do is provide links to a parliamentary website, and a partisan political website set up by a U.S. senator who is opposed to climate science on ideological and conspiracy theorist grounds. The deceptive nature of the latter website is immediately obvious when you look at the list of so-called 400 scientists. The list includes scores of economists, TV weathermen, industry consultants, lobbyists, activists and mathematicians. In fact, as a geology graduate Gabriel could have easily been on that list, and would have been more qualified than many who are on it right now. Regarding the hacked emails, let me restate the following: 1. No credible scientist or scientific organization has made any serious allegation of scientific fraud against climate scientists based on the information contained in the hacked emails. 2. In fact, the world's most reputed scientific journal Nature has exposed the unjustified nature of the false allegations. Please see the quotes and link to its editorial below: QUOTE Nothing in the e-mails undermines the scientific case that global warming is real — or that human activities are almost certainly the cause. That case is supported by multiple, robust lines of evidence, including several that are completely independent of the climate reconstructions debated in the e-mails... A fair reading of the e-mails reveals nothing to support the denialists' conspiracy theories Whatever the e-mail authors may have said to one another in (supposed) privacy, however, what matters is how they acted. And the fact is that, in the end, neither they nor the IPCC suppressed anything: when the assessment report was published in 2007 it referenced and discussed both papers Whatever the e-mail authors may have said to one another in (supposed) privacy, however, what matters is how they acted. And the fact is that, in the end, neither they nor the IPCC suppressed anything: when the assessment report was published in 2007 it referenced and discussed both papers. The stolen e-mails have prompted queries about whether Nature will investigate some of the researchers' own papers. One e-mail talked of displaying the data using a 'trick' — slang for a clever (and legitimate) technique, but a word that denialists have used to accuse the researchers of fabricating their results. It is Nature's policy to investigate such matters if there are substantive reasons for concern, but nothing we have seen so far in the e-mails qualifies. UNQUOTE ..The scientific journal NATURE 3. The police criminal investigation is focused only on the illegal hacking of private personal emails. Please see the following official letter from the University of East Anglia: http://www.parliament.uk/documents/upload/091210_UEA_Vice-Chancellor_Letter.pdf 4. The quote in the post appended below concerns an independent review commissioned by the University of East Anglia to ascertain the truth or falsity of the wild allegations and speculations made in the lay press. [Goanet] SMILE................ IT'S WEEKEND (18/02/2010)
--- *** Follow Goanet on Twitter *** http://twitter.com/goanet --- IN THAT……… An Indian (Ramanlal) was traveling in a train in Pakistan , along with his pregnant wife(Shivangi). A few Pak army officers were also traveling in the same compartment. As everybody knows, the Pakis think they are a little too smart in their own country and also try to show their superiority in all aspects, they tried to act little smart and embarrass the Indian. They thought at the same time, it would be a good time-pass too. So, one of them (Iqbal) went and sat beside Ramanlal. Iqbal: Are you an Indian?. Ramanlal: Yes, I am. Iqbal: Is your wife pregnant? Ramanlal: Yes. Ramanlal was a bit annoyed by the question as it was obviously visible that his wife was pregnant and Iqbal still asked that question. But Ramanlal kept quiet. Iqbal: If it is a boy, what would you like him to be? Ramanlal: I'd make him a Software Engineer. Iqbal: What if it is a girl? Ramanlal: I'd make her a doctor. Now, Iqbal gave Ramanlal a naughty grin and said:- Iqbal: What if it is neither a boy nor a girl? Now the smart Indian (Ramanlal) realized the whole point. He realized that these officers were trying to embarrass him, so he decided to give it back to them. Ramanlal thought for a second, returned the same naughty smile back to the officer and said: Ramanlal: In that case, he will join the Pakistan army... Cajetan de Sanvordem Kuwait
