Dear Soter-bab,

The GBA douchebags have been 'naagde' for a long time.
The only new development is, the XXX-rated GBA porn is now
up on the public YouTube for all Goans to see. I have written
about the games played by these architect rascals, Goan
as well as bhaile, on Goanet before.

As for the Tariq Chauhans and the Dharul Khalils, Goa is now
a brothel that any bhailo can check into for a quickie. It tells you
the kind of worthless refuse that Goans have become. I surmise
Goa will be the next bastion of the Taliban. Commie Gadgil and boy
'academic' Fernandes will be howling for a fresh tranche of muslim
rights for the soon-to-be-registered Goa Taliban. Frederick Noronha
can then be counted on as their dutiful coolie.

Why do Goans even bother - simply hand over Goa to the outsiders
and the ghatis and be done with it. That Goa going to soon be another
Indian sewer is a fait accompli.

[Goanet] Our Corrupt Politicians Have Tarnished Goa's Image

2010-05-17 Thread manuel tavares
Freddy, I wholeheartedly agree with you. These scoundrels should be prosecuted
and all their illegal doings should be publicized for all to see. Then all
their ill-gotten gains should be repaid to the government, and their remaining
assets whether got by fair means of foul be confiscated and forfeited to the
state. This will act as a deterrent to stop future politicians who wish to
enrich themselves at the expense of Goa and Goans to think twice for the same
fate will befall them should they wander into such corrupt ways.

I therefore throw this challenge to all Goans to unite in the face of these
atrocities and first and foremost vote these thieves and robbers out of
parliament. The only way we can do this is to register one and all as voters
and then turn up in force on election day and vote in dedicated, honest,
trustworthy and selfless people to represent us in parliament. People who will
have Goa's and Goan's interests at heart and not their own. People who value
their name and who will be seen by their deeds to be people of integrity. This
is the only way we can ensure that there will be a place called Goa, not in
name only, but truly representative of our traditional views and values.

Come on Goans, we are facing a crises. If we don't unite now and stem the
advance of these corrupt politicians, then we will only have ourselves to
blame. We have to show them that we are not cowards!

WE HAVE BEEN MEEK AND HUMBLE FOR TOO LONG AND ALLOWED EVERYONE TO WALK ALL OVER
US. WE MUST FIGHT BACK AND REGAIN WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OURS AND GUARD IT WITH OUR
LIVES, ONCE ACHIEVED.

And each year, a theme is decided on by the Advisory Committee of the
International Council of Museum (ICOM).

Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of
cultures, development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace
among peoples. As a definition by ICOM says, a museum is "an institution
in the service of society and of its development".

Now complying with the theme, Museum for Social Harmony, Goa Chitra, an
ethnographical museum, situated in Benaulim, has opened its door to all
senior citizens of the state this year. The curator and founder of the
museum, Victor Hugo Gomes reiterating his passion for preserving the
past to enrich the future says that the genesis of the museum began many
years ago when he started collecting old, discarded implements and tools
from attics and storerooms because he was saddened to see reminders of a
way of life disappear.

This project has been recognised as an international product and has

[Goanet] Jacinta Luis - Concert Review

2010-05-17 Thread Mervyn Lobo
JACINTA LUIS
by Mel D'Souza

Like the weather that evening, the recital at the Al Greene Theatre in Toronto
on May 8, 2010 could have been described in one word - COOL! But whereas it was
a cold front coming in from the west that dropped the temperature rapidly to
zero, a different kind of ‘cool’ came in from the east in the form of a jazz
trio from Montreal led by Jacinta Luis. The music was a refreshing change from
the popular generic music that caters to the tastes of the diverse cultures
that make up the cosmopolitan city of Toronto.

Jacinta opened the show with her version of the classic standards “I Believe”
and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” followed by “Shine”, a tribute to her late
brother, Ian, who wrote the lyrics for which Jacinta wrote the music. For the
rest of the evening, Jacinta entertained the near-capacity audience with her
own compositions and her jazz interpretations of works by the great songwriters
of our time, such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Paul Anka, to name a few.

Jacinta Luis is the ideal exponent of jazz. A combination of her musical
training and rich cultural background provides all the necessary elements to
bring out the best in her performance.

Jacinta is a versatile and dynamic vocalist and pianist whose warm voice and
natural ear for music, reinforced by her training in classical piano,
contribute immensely to the listening pleasure of her performances.

Her cultural background also plays a significant role in the variety of her
repertoire. Jacinta was born in Dar es Salaam in East Africa to parents who had
their origins in Goa, India, when it was Portuguese territory. Her father was a
member of the city’s most popular dance band, and as a child, Jacinta would jam
with her parents and siblings, all of whom either sang or played at least one
musical instrument. It was in Africa that she acquired a love for the beat that
is at the heart of African and Latin American music.

In 1971, Jacinta’s family immigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal. It is
in this most European of Canadian cities that her Portuguese heritage tweaked
her interest in studying classical piano. She pursued music courses in Dawson
College and Concordia University, and acquired an MA in Music Education at the
University of Victoria where she developed her interest in vocal jazz,
arranging and composing.

Jacinta’s family and musical background reveals itself in her performances. Her
rendition of the Swahili classic “Malaika” (Angel) and the South African “Pata
Pata”, made famous by Miriam Makeba, was delivered with underlying African
‘spirit’. Likewise, her “jazzed” version of the Goan traditional folk song ‘Aum
Saiba’ (abbreviation of “Aum Saiba Poltoddi Vetam”) - about a woman crossing
the river with trepidation – incorporated creative phrasing without deviating
from the original theme.

Backing up Jacinta on vocals were her fellow Quebecers Stephane Crete, bass,
and Michael Dennis, percussion, who exuded that joie de vivre of Montrealers
that brought a warm glow to a cool evening.

This is one of the few articles that has really captured my interest. I'm
not going to pretend I live in Goa or can even understand the totality of
the issues. However I certainly understand the message being conveyed
through the article ... reclamation of the environment, looking beyond
differences (religious and class), need for a unified commitment at all
levels to our land and its people; and the creation of sustainable social,
political and environmental practices that will benefit Goa today and
tomorrow.

Whenever non-Goans gush about Goa, usually about its 'otherness' in
relation to other Indian states, I'm quick to retort that the land is
being desecrated for short term gain. In villages across Tivim, family
homes and land are giving way to developments that are incongruous with
the natural environment; no 'environmental impact statements' are
considered prior to any such developments [even at its most basic level];
increasing reliance on cars has given way to a looming health crisis in
our village where women [at least ones I know] are moving towards obesity
with little understanding of its health impacts; no preservation of
historic sites in villages.

Modernisation is good but we don't have to lose our sense of self.

Perhaps what is not considered is that Goa emerged in 1961 from a
ruthless dictatorship and were just as intimidated by the new authority
which confused people who did not know how to react particularly when
any vistage of 'western influence' invited negative reactions and such
Goans labelled as 'dogs.'Any leadership that could be depended upon did
not emerge from among the people. When Goans took charge they had no
vision for their future, a great deal of opportunity was wasted in
legislations that could have waited, while the problem of education, of
land administration and the decision to maintain what was essential and
precious was ignored. What the Goan totally misunderstood was the close
connection to land, a symbiotic relationship that was the only
inheritance that remained unrealized.

Goa was made by human effort. Its low lying Khazans were wrested from
the sea, its bunds and terraced hills, its kullagars and salt pans and
its complex administration were a peoples effort. Its agronomists
nurtured its many fruits and its fish and fowl and water bodies were
seasonal celebrations to be shared. And all this was achieved with
minimum technology and an understanding of nature.
When I came to Goa what hurt was the rejection of things Indian by
ordinary people obssessed by foreign goods.
The outlook was toward western shores. The needs of the land were
ignored and it was replaced by greed. The land was not understood as a
sustainable resource, it changed instead to a commodity with an ever
expanding price and so we have lost our salt pans, our forests, our water
bodies and our fields. The landscape is hidden by billboards of
unacceptable proportions which are an affront to my visual freedom. The
buildings are symbols of egotistic "ME TOO", The police dance to the
tunes of whoever pulls the strings and our only ' Instrument ' of Public
Good which is the elected Government is itself involved in a host of
self serving activities squandering public money for personal gain.Clean
up the Garbage, Stop the Mining lobby manned by politicians, Get a
sensible regional plan that empowers ordinary people, improve the
disgraceful state of schools, reduce the land sharks who descend on Goa
with the wherewithall to buy up the gullible native and his panchayat as
well...the list is long and the fighters few.

All Goans want to leave and every other Indian thinks Goa is the new
Dubai. We are glamourous, well endowed and capable of the Good LIfe. We
are the lifestyle mecca of India and this illusion is perpetuated by our
newspapers and the media. Come the rains and we can have Jumping
Chicken, and the old lores, superstitious beliefs and practices
are perpetuated with hundreds of articles extolling their long forgotten
reason for being. And our event managers will use anything for an event
of great short lived consequence which our Politicians attend with much
awaited gusto from their adoring fans.
Are we ready to fight? It costs to stick your neck out, If you stand up
to be counted immediately a slander or a scandal is cooked up about you
and the papers are full of the dirty rotten stink created on your
behalf. We are very good at that kind of thing. So, we don't have the
land, we don't have its enduring love and we are standing on the street
corner demanding a sale.

[Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: “The Dreaming House” by Tanya Mendonsa reviewed by Martine Corina Meijer

2010-05-17 Thread Goanet A-C-E!

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
The poetry of Tanya Mendonsa, by Martine Meijer

“I woke up after my first night in Moira, sat down and wrote a poem. It
has not stopped since”, says Tanya Mendonsa. In Moira she found she
could do what she was born to do - all the poems in her first volume
entitled “Dreaming House were written in the two years after she came to
live in Moira.

In 1995, after spending 19 years in Paris, Tanya returned to India with
a prayer in her heart - to paint and write again, surrounded by green.
In Goa, the spirits of nature bestowed this boon upon her and because of
this she has dedicated her first volume to the community of Moira.
Together with them she is engaged in a valiant and ongoing campaign to
preserve its river, its waters, is trees and all the life in them.

Tanya’s poetry is born from consciously living the conflict of our
times: that, as humans, we are both modern and natural. As in these
lines from “Divorced from Green:

One has no forewarning,
in the days of the fish and the dragonfly,
that this will not be forever.
(….)
The demands –
of a world you never knew existed
hang weights

on limbs
that yesterday
had no idea they were any different
from tree branches or the haunches of a deer.

The feet meet cement,
and are forever divorced from green.

The author returned to green but on her morning walks along the river in
Moira she found her views blocked by construction sites, and she
stumbled over rubble and garbage.

The relentless encroachment of a one-sided humanness stirred up pain,
anger and bewilderment. The conflict forced her inside of herself, to
that place of nature within us - that place where, if we only dwell long
and deep enough, something new and earlier unknown will show itself
between the opposites. What came to her from there is a new way of
seeing and the words to make us see anew too. She quotes one of her
favourite poets, Mary Oliver: “ Whoever made music of a mild day?”

In Tanya Mendonsa’s poetry nature is not just a pretty backdrop to a
life full of only human concerns, not just matter that humans can bend
to their will, but spirit redeemed - nature once again as essential to
us. When asked about the meaning of redemption for her she quotes
Shelley: to preserve oneself from the “contagion of the world’s slow
stain” , and thus to delight in something saved .

“Dreaming House” is not the work of a beginner. It is informed and
inspired by a long life of reading. Tanya says she has practically read
a book a day since she was 10 years old. Growing up in an English
speaking environment in Calcutta, the book fairs there were a delight,
and her mother Gilda ( herself a writer of cookbooks ) bought her books
constantly. After moving to Paris at the age of 21, she had to earn a
living there, but the reading never really dried up; nor the writing of
poetry.

Which brings us to the poet’s precursors, some of whose lines, with a
little guidance, we can find hidden in a few of her poems: W.B. Yeats,
Wystawa Szymborska, Gerald Manley Hopkins, Mary Oliver and George
Herbert ( a priest and poet from the 16th century). The last three are
her favourites because of the way they marry complexity to a clarity of
expression, and because they are always unexpected in their use of
language.

Indeed “Dreaming House” shows Tanya’s mastery in combining original ways
of seeing with a clear language, alternating between earnestness and
frivolity:

“Staying Single”
To sleep till noon
and, summoned by the
moon through an open window,
go out to dig and plant
in her company.

Letting the dishes pile up in the sink;
to stand, elbows on a wall,
in the cool wind,
eating a sandwich
of hot boiled egg and salt
at 3 am.

The scope of “Dreaming House’ is wide. Once in Moira Tanya could look
back in a different way at her varied experiences and from that
wellspring came the first part of the book called “ The Voyage Out”:
about maturing, about people real and imagined , about love and loss,
about a life away from India. In the poem “Staying Home “:

(…)
The blood and the guts of life
are better engaged with
when your feet can feel the earth;
(…)

The second part of the book, entitled “The Country Beyond” speaks of the
infinite love that has grown in her soul for Moira, its landscapes, its
people. The two parts are united under the one roof of a “Dreaming
House” by the sensuousness of their language. This poetic language
reminds one of the language of dreams, saying exactly what it has to say
in its own unique form, creating a direct connection with that fabled
world within us - our psyche, which is Nature itself.

Reading her poems, whether they speak of nature, people or inner events
moves us to see differently for a moment, and brings about the aliveness
that comes from feeling connected to something larger, when the ordinary
becomes extra-ordinary.

From “Staying Home”
Every day, the same landscape shifts.
Every day, the same face a

CM’s help to be sought to save Goan clubs in Mumbai

HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, MAY 17

The Federation for Goan Clubs (kuds) in Mumbai will approach Chief
Minister, Digambar Kamat to assign a Minister for the kuds and work in
tandem with the Federation and the office of the Archbishop to save the
age-old clubs from being taken over by land sharks in the metropolis.

Federation vice-President, David Joseph said the time has come for the
Goa government to stand out and reach out to these clubs in Mumbai, who
are villagers, but owning assets and properties worth thousands of
crores of rupees.

Joseph was in Goa in connection with a dispute wherein a club was
reportedly sold to a real estate developer in Mumbai. “The Federation
will soon make a representation to the Chief Minister to assign a
Minister for Clubs. That Minister would be working in tandem with the
Federation of the Clubs and the Archbishop House. These bodies for no
selfish motive. We are only interested that the benefits of the clubs
should come back to the villagers in terms of beautiful accommodation,
which will take care of rooms for the families and individuals”, he said.

“Our forefathers had a vision. They took these assets so that Goans
visiting Mumbai need not have to stay in hotels. We all should protect
these assets, whose value today runs into thousands of crores”, Joseph
added.

Saying that the Federation is actively working to safeguard the interest
of Goan clubs in Mumbai, he said only 243 clubs are existing today out
of 341 clubs in Mumbai, while calling for united efforts to save and
protect the traditional clubs.

Referring to the disputes involving the clubs with the real estate
developers, he said the managers of the clubs do not understand the
complicated mindset of the land sharks, who are waiting to grab these
valuable assets .

Replying to a question, he said the awareness program initiated by the
Federation has so far succeeded in making 70 clubs to register themselves.

Why implausible? Even when it emerged from colonialism, Goa was in the
top five or six States/Union Territories in terms of literacy.

There may have not been much access to higher education in Goa in those
times, but literacy was (and still is) regarded as the ability to sign
one's name.

So why does this figure sound implausibe? Curious... FN

much higher than 31.23% , which would appear to be highly implausible.

[Goanet] Awareness Meeting for FLAT OWNERS at Mapusa on Sunday 23rd May

2010-05-17 Thread Goa Desc
 ---
Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your
family members, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed.

---
GOACAN to hold meeting for Flat Owners at Mapusa
--
GOACAN has decided to hold the third meeting of
Flat Owners at Mapusa as part of its ongoing
Awareness Campaign on their Consumer Rights.
The Awareness Meeting for Flat Owners will be
organised by GOACAN on Sunday 23rd May
at Raikar Hall near Laxmi Narayan Temple,
Behind Suraj Bookstall Mapusa from 10am to 1pm.

It may be noted that over the past two years
GOACAN has been receiving many complaints
directly and through the village based Consumer
Forums from Flat Owners with regards to their sale
agreements, non-maintenance of the buildings & non
formation of Housing Societies although payment
has been made to the builder, poor service of
electricity & water supply, no proper parking facilities,
conversion & sale of open spaces, lack of garbage
management & sanitation and taxation issues with
Municipal Councils & Village Panchayats.

With the lack of proper legislation, poor monitoring
by various Government Agencies, and most importantly
lack of awareness of their consumer rights, Flat Owners
across the State of Goa have been facing umpteen
number of problems that have resulted in unnecessary
litigation, large scale expenses, agony and mental tension
for families interested in having a decent home and a
peaceful life. Many senior citizens have also lost their
life savings due to problems related to purchase of flats.

The recent initiatives by the Jairam Complex Residents
Association in Panjim and the Chowgule Gardens
Welfare Association in Zuarinagar to organise them
-selves to respond to issues faced by them is a positive
sign for Flat owners in Goa.

GOACAN is convinced that unless Flat owners
understand their Rights & Responsibilities, stop
agonising & start organising, identify the various
agencies that are part of the problem and involve them
in the solution, unite at Building & Town level, the
problem will continue to persist and reach gigantic
proportions.

In this context GOACAN has held meetings at Vasco
and Margao and proposes to hold similar awareness
meetings in the towns of Ponda and Panjim so as to
provide an opportunity and a platform for Flat owners
to narrate their problems, express their opinions on the
possible solutions and chart out a course of action
for the near future.

GOACAN proposes to facilitate the process for the
setting up of a Bardez Taluka Flat Owners Association
to protect the interests of the Flat Owners in the
Taluka. In this direction it will develop a charter of
demands which would include lobbying for legislation
with the members of the Goa Legislative Assembly
from the constituencies in Bardez as well as guidelines
for action by the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC)
as a local self governing body before the forthcoming
Municipal Council elections.

GOACAN calls upon individual Flat owners and
prospective Flat Owners, Co-operative Housing
Societies, Housing Maintenance Societies, Housing
Associations from Mapusa and surrounding areas
in Bardez who would like to attend and actively
participate in the Awareness Meeting to write in to

[Goanet] Konkani - devanagri or Romi?

2010-05-17 Thread Jerry Fernandes
Dear Netters,

This Konkani Romi / devanagri discussion has been going on for quite a long
time with no way the devanagris agreeing to accept that the Romi is the real
Konkani of Goa.

Dr Borges the staunch supporter and the main correspondent on goanet for
devanagris has been writing endlessly, his strong love for the devanagri
Konkani, but what amazes me is that his correspondence is mostly in romi (
not the writing) but the pronounciations, and I wonder why he does not write
his mails in devanagri,(he may use the romi script as goanet does not
support the devanagri font) , and I am curious to read and see if I can
understand the devanagri Konkani.

Most of what is being said on doordarshan TV, in the short time allotted to
Goa, just flies over my head and makes me wonder if that is the Konkani or
Marathi or whatever language it is.

Cheers

Re: [Goanet] Catholic Land Scam: Parishoners want Bishops defrocked!

2010-05-17 Thread floriano

Today, 17 May, 2010, seems to be a day of many surprises.
For one, our CM boldly says he does not need votes from Goans. Perhaps he
can win the seat on the strength of the migrant cultivated vote-bank.
And ladies get dragged with impunity and almost beaten in the august
precincts of the Goa Vidhan Sabha.

But this is not the surprise that I am talking about. At Verna's Blue Berry
meeting venue, I met a guy known to me, after a very long time. And as we
got talking about things, we lapsed into the the idle talk of sex scams,
land scams, secularism and communalism etc. And he asked me if I have been
to Diwar. "Ofcourse", I said. "Diwar, Malar, St. Matias is all I know plus I
know about the Bonderam festivals". "Why are you asking?" I asked.

"Do you know that there is an island called 'Vaxim' admeasuring
approximately 4 lac square meters at Diwar?" he asked. "No" I said. "Never
heard of it"
"Well", he said. "It belonged to Santa Monica estates controlled by the
Church of Goa". "And just like the Church has sold out other properties kept
in its custoldy, i.e Canon Souto Maior property in Caranzalem, or, Santa
Monica property at Corlim, Goa leased out to the corrupter and master
polluter Sinzenta, Vaxim island has been sold by the Church for peanust [37
lacs] some 4-5 years ago to Vijay Mallya" he said. "And the go between agent
to sell this off to Mallya was Architect Mahendra Gaonekar" he said. When I
looked surprised, he added, "that is not all". "the guy who signed the sale
deed is your fellow Moidekar"

"Oh My!" I said. Only if I knew, I could have been the owner of an entire
island, far away from the hustle and bustle of every day dirty and dry
life" And perhaps I could have set up the headquarters of PPS there on this
island. What a pity" I said.

Saving Goa was the raison d'etre of the Save Goa Front.
Looks like somewhere down the line saving Goa got lost from the list of
priorities and looking after number one became the most important
preoccupation.
Now it appears that the whole family seems to be wanting a finger in the pie
of the state.
So why not let the children, the nephews and the rest of the family join the
band wagon? There is lot's of room at the top for sundry family members and

The poor Goan sots are ready to be taken for a ride once again!

It?s very easy.
Here is how..

On Tiatr Day i.e. 17th April 2010, at Tiatr Academy Conference Hall,
two amateur Tiatrists (?) proclaimed that ?JoeGoaUk demanded
compensation from Times of India
for stealing his Tiatr stage photo and using it in the daily.
And that TOI paid him Rs.8,000 as compensation.
of which they even claimed to have seen a proof of receipt from TOI office?

Reminds me of something that happened in Goa. I can't pinpoint exact details
as age has dimmed memory.

Years ago, a Chinese sailor had hacked his captain to death while the ship
was off Goan waters. So when the ship berthed at Mormugao, the sailor was
promptly arrested and incarcerated in the local jail. He languished in jail
for a number of years because there was no one who could understand his
language to communicate with him. So he was kept in a kind of legal limbo.

This went on for quite a number of years till the print media got wind of it
and blew it up. The man was released after a number of years in jail.

The strange thing was that a few days after his release, he disappeared and
has never been heard of again.

2010-05-17 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

Dear Mr. Barve,

You are obviously discussing the issue from ill-informed premises.
None (repeat, NONE) of the Goan names mentioned in any of my
four articles on the subject are of any Goan-origin defence officers
in India's defence services who served the Portuguese administration
prior to 1961 -- and then were absorbed in Indian services, as you
seem to suggest. NONE of the names in the next two articles to follow
will similarly be of Goans who served the Portuguese (though it wasn't
a crime to serve in the colonial administration!) ALL names are of
those brave officer rank men who served India, or call her Bharat or
call her Hindustan. Whatever your personal choice.

Instead of merely trying to search for cracks in what I wrote (and I can
assure you I have taken maximum possible care to avoid errors), why
don't you contribute positively -- you may know of some Goan names
that I have missed so far. Tell me about them.

But do remember that in the defence services, every officer regards
himself/herself as Indian first, then Goan/Bengali/Punjabi/etc., then maybe
Hindu/Muslim/Christian/Sikh/Parsi/etc. -- and last perhaps as a veg. or
non-veg by diet and other predilections. Open your mindset with a
wide-angle lens and please talk further.

Thanks and regards, v

Dear Mr. Barve,

Will you kindly tell me who has given this "interesting
news"
-- and "again and again" -- before? I must be foolish to
think I was
attempting something like this for the first time...

Will you kindly also disclose the rank/name of all other
Goans
(who you obviously imply I left out -- deliberately or
otherwise) who
served India as commissioned/ranked defence officers??

Will you also come to terms with the fact that I was on
Indian
defence officers of Goan origin, who are NOT recruited by
way of
"recruitment drive in Goa" -- but by an all-India
competitive entrance
exam for the NDA/IMA/etc?

And finally, will you stop thinking that I am some walking
encyclopaedia on defence officers of Goan origin? If you
need to
know the date of commissioning of any officer, you can
jolly well
search the official defence website www.bharatrakshak.com

Or, if the shoe pinches, face facts, and keep your trap

Dear Barve,

Amazing that it may sound, but well as you have said, maybe the Catholics on
Valmaki’s list may have served the Portuguese. Does it mean, only they were
educated Catholics of than? What happened after Goa became part of India,
did the Catholics suddenly loose their interest in joining the forces? I
wonder why.

As Goans we should be proud of the achievements of our fellow Goans, who
ever they may be. Its great that Valmaki brought the list forward, and you
could have supported him by joining more names from Hindu community to make
it more complete instead of being critical.

[Goanet] A report on Verna's Blue Berry Meet and the scuffle at the Secretariat, Porvorim

2010-05-17 Thread floriano

A report

There were approx a hundred people gathered at Blue Berry, Verna, mostly
village groups who are fighting filling of agricultural fields, sewage
spilling into fields, mega projects, mining and its woes etc. etc. Prominent
among those present were Dr. Wilfred Mesquita, Fr. Eremito Rebello, Fr.
Bismarque Dias, Edwin & Diana Pinto, Judith Almeida, Laurie Abranches, John
Philip Pereira and his wife Olinda, young Neri Fernandes, not forgetting
Prince Jacob and many more.

After a while of various addresses and even a song dedicated to Goa sung,
the crowd tracked it out to the Secretariat at Porvorim to hand a memorandum
of demands (as posted earlier) to the Chief Minister, especially as today
was the day of CM listening to the grievances of the people at his office at
the secretariat.

Permission was refused for the people to see and submit the memorandum to
the CM and the police bandobost was quickly arranged. After much arguments
with the police (Inspector Devendra Gad) a five member delegation of women
were allowed to see the CM. The purpose of this delegation was to request
the CM to come out and meet/address the people at the front gate of the
Minister's complex. It is believed that the CM was rude to the women
delegation even to the extent of telling them that he does not need their
votes when told that he has been elected by the people - when he refused
point blank to meet and hear the grievances of the people. "I will not see
the rowdy people - You can do what you want" is believed to be his answer to
the delegation.

There were bad scene of scuffles between the police and the people when
police forced the people to disperse. Diana Pinto suffered a minor head
injury when she was pushed by the inspector of police Mr. Gad to load her
into the police bus to be transported to the Porvorim Police station. Also
inspector Gad had a scuffle with Olinda Pereira trying to pull her into the
police bus with Olinda's blouse having been torn and in the bargain Olinda
de-commissioning the inspector of both his shoulder stripes and chain in one
jerk.

At the police station, the leader of the opposition ( who was summoned by
the agitators) along with a delegation of the agitators saw the SP (North)
Mr. Arwind Gawas. Later the agitators were allowed to go after signing
personal bonds, much after 3 p.m.

The entire episode at the secretariat and the police station was very well
covered by the electronic media and the detailed footage is presently
running on all the local channels at this very moment, especially the INGOA
channel.

The PPS was much promoted from Verna to Porvorim and the agitators have
realized that PPS is perhaps the right forum to get under to cleanse the
dirty politics of money and disregard to the environment, ecology and sanity
of Goa by the perverted politicians of the day.

Yours sincerely, in his address to the crowd at Verna related the unity
story of the Battle at Kruger which Dr. Ferdinand dos Reis Falcao was kind
enough to make available. The story as well as its context was well
appreciated by one and all present.

Cheers

The last thing you want to do Floriano is get involved in the politics of UK

2010-05-17 Thread Goa World

Tottewada’s mangrove trees gone?
CM’s eco-sensitive promise comes a cropper
By Franky Gracias
PANJIM, MAY 14

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s verbal assurances to the Goa Bachao
Abhiyan of not allowing cutting of mangroves in eco-sensitive zones has
come a cropper as a 500-metre stretch touching the banks of river
Mandovi at Tottewada, Naroa in Bicholim have been felled for a
commercial project while the authorities concerned have turned a
Nelson’s eye to the wanton destruction.

Journalists who visited the spot on Friday walked the stretch and got to
see for themselves the felling of a huge number of mangrove trees in the
eco-fragile area and also witnessed alleged illegal hill-cutting for a
road that will facilitate the commercial project.

Inquiries with some of the villagers revealed one Captain Mehta of
Panjim-based Sea Scan Marine Services had cleared the pristine mangroves
on May 2, 2010, in order to construct a dry dock and a farm house. The
villagers revealed Mehta had visited the villagers’ houses promising
employment to locals once the dry dock was built.

Villager Sandip Naik who claimed he lost around 1,800 square metres of
his property to the hill-cutting said the activity for building the
approach road more than a kilometre long has been going on in a portion
which is a reserved forest since last year.

“When I approached Captain Mehta and brought to his notice the
encroachment and destruction of jackfruit and cashew trees in my
property I was told that the activity was legal and he could do what he
wants,” Naik maintained.

Captain Mehta has also anchored seven tourist boats on the banks of the
river where a miniature ramshackle jetty has been made of bamboo stands.

When press persons accompanied by social activists approached the Naroa
Village Panchayat, the Sarpanch, Laxman Malvankar, said no permissions
were issued for any of the activity carried out by Mehta but also
admitted there was no written complaint made by him for legal action.

Malvankar expressed helplessness to many of the ills going on in the
village. “I went to the Bicholim block development officer after
learning of the mangrove cutting but got no cooperation from him,” he
observed. The panchayat secretary is on leave from March 3, 2010 and
till date I haven’t got a replacement, he mentioned.

But when asked whether he had conducted an inspection of the spot and
compiled a report after the mangrove cutting came to his knowledge the
sarpanch again admitted he had not carried out any such activity which
has brought up a question mark on the functional capability of the
village panchayat.

It is just today, nearly two weeks after the cutting and burning of the
mangroves, the sarpanch drafted a complaint and filed it before the
Bicholim police which stated they were verifying the ownership of the
property where the violations has taken place before registering a case.

Public meet to highlight govt’s failure on various fronts today

MARGAO, MAY 16

The Village Groups of Goa are holding a public meeting on the May 17 at 10am
near Blueberry Hill, on Verna Plateau to protest against the failure of the
Government of Goa to act on all the illegalities such as hill-cutting,
filling of paddy fields, construction activity in eco-sensitive zones,
illegal mining, land grabbing by the Government, Collapse of law and order
in the state etc.

Cyrdon Madeira informed on Sunday that the meeting is open for the people of
Goa to come and join hands to save what is left of Goa, for the future
generations.

He said till date many NGO’s and village groups have been fighting mini
battles to achieve justice in their own areas, with no outside support or
helping hand.

Madeira said many village groups have joined hands and are united for the
first time in the history of the state of Goa, adding this by itself says a
lot and that being the sons and daughters of the soil are fed up and have
lost all their patience.

“They feel neglected, cheated, disgusted and angered at the state of affairs
as they are in the state. With the Government having no regard for it’s
people the only option left is to meet and get as many people into the fold
and proceed with a future course of action”, he added.

The group has appealed to the people to stop being slaves of politicians and
sell their conscience for a few pieces of silver. “This is the mother of all
public meetings and it is in the best interest of every Goan to lend their
support by attending this meeting. As children we all owe our motherland the
protection she deserves in times of need. Let us save our motherland from
turning into a concrete jungle and from a green Goa we knew to a brown Goa
we would not want to be associated with. Let us stop being greedy as when
everything deteriorates and dies money cannot and will not be able to feed
us”, he added.

[Goanet] Celebrating Goa's Ministers

2010-05-17 Thread Arwin Mesquita
I am as guilty as many of my other Goan Colleagues; as I was part of
associations celebrating Goa's Corrupt Ministers, a few years back. But I
have come to my senses and hope that my fellow Goans, would do the same as
well. Goans are honoring Goan Ministers in Canada, USA, Europe, Gulf, Goa
etc and I really need to ask the question; Why? Are we honoring the very
people who are responsible for the sorry state of affairs Goa is in today.
These corrupt MLA's that we are honoring, have and are today actually
seriously damaging Goa, its land, its Identity and are continuing to do so
with all of our blessings. Following are some facts which these MLA's or
Ministers are guilty of; on some or all of them:

(1) Using the Konkani movement to enter Politics and then using Power to
gain illegitimate wealth and pull in respective family members into politics
and further damage Goa & Its Identity; what is the status of Konkani today?

(2) Liaising with powerful Non-Goan companies to sell of Goan Land or bring
in un-wanted mega-projects e.g. in Carmona. And these very people had
hypocritically floated political parties to Save Goa!!

(3) Supporting Migrant vote-banks, issuing ration cards to migrants and
supporting Parties that encourage migrant vote-banks; leaving no stone
un-turned to gain as much power & wealth as possible.

(4) Excessive Corruption, Faulty Employment & Industrial policies done
mainly in personal monetary interests, forcing Goans to go overseas; and
many of these Overseas Goans ironically reciprocate by honoring them?

(5) Illegal Land Conversions, Hill-cutting, filling of fields, contamination
of land & water etc

(6) Using scarce taxpayer’s money for their selfish exploits with absolutely
no accountability; then use a small percentage of their loot for bags of
rice, sugar, alcohol, meals etc so as to buy off gullible voters!!

Surely the above are only some facts and there are much more. So again, I
really would like to know why Goans are celebrating these people; who if
allowed to continue, will spell doom for our beautiful land & our prized
identity!! Many Overseas Goans in particular complain, that they are too far
away to do anything for Goa; well then please at least stop
honoring/entertaining the very people who are destroying Goa & Goans. Let
them know that they are not our heroes but are actually the enemies of Goa &
Goans!!

In response to:

From: tony martin

Subject: [Goanet] Talpona golf course update

Goa is become a land of "scams a galore". The TPC and the Panchayat bodies are
just pawns, that are moved around carefully in arithmetically calibrated moves
by the builders lobby, fearing repercussions the poor corrupt souls provide
provisional NOC's to start work without the approval of the gram sabha, so, does
the Gram Sabha has any meaning ? That's the reason why our Government is not for
the 73rd and 74th amendment. They can easily manipulate, the panches, Sapranches
and the Secretaries.

By now a lot of goanetters must be aware of the fight of the people of
Kanaguinim against the food park and the auxiliary services project in their
back yard, it was just another scam by the local MLA. All the sea front plateaus
in Goa have fallen prey to the greed of the builders, who know the weaknesses of
our politicians, their penchant for plethora of wealth. The actual plan was a
golf course and over 800 housing units and had nothing to do with food park. We
are still up in arms and fighting hard against this project.

Cabo de Rama plateau was another scam where communidade land was sold to a five
star consortium, but we the villagers of our area fought and won against the
perpetrators.

CRZ is yet another scam by which the billion dollar hotel industry is
facilitated and we Goans are harassed, our government is not just interested
about the well being of the public, they are only interested in fulfilling the
wishes and the dreams of money bags the world over in return for rewards in cash
or kind. It just doesn't matter to them, if Goans are pushed into oblivion in
the process.

In this case I would strictly advise a strong unity of the citizenry and the
involvement of the youth is very very important. If the people are together one
in mind and spirit then nothing can prevail over them and I am talking from
experience.

People of Talpona be united and don't waver and you'll will be successful.

[Goanet] Trouble in Cuncolim - GBA X'POSED

2010-05-17 Thread soter
The latest news is that Cuncolim is on the boil once again. A permission
granted for a residential project to one Dubai based Tariq Chauhan of Dharul
Khalil, Aligarh U.P. by the Cuncolim Municipal Council is now suspected by
villagers to be more of a madrasa with the toilet specifications itself being
as big as a bedroom. Several violations have been observed. When residents
spoke to the said Chauhan in Dubai over phone, he challenged them to do
whatever they want as he has the full support of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat
and Urban development Minister Joaquim Alemao. What fuelled even more anger is
the realisation that the project has been designed by a firm Mozaiq-Archnova
which people allege to be that of Arch. Dean D'Cruz and is signed by one arch.
Poonam Verma all of Goa Bachao fame. Coincidentally, Dean D'Cruz is also
involved in designing the market project at Cuncolim for SUDHA. The Cuncolkars
are now gearing up for a show down.

[Goanet] GRB formulates rehab scheme

2010-05-17 Thread Mauricio Pereira

The Goa Rehabilitation Board (GRB) has formulated a scheme at a cost of Rs 11.6
crore for rehabilitation of persons likely to be displaced by the acquisition
of land for the remaining part of the 4-lane NH 17-B from Varunapuri to
Mormugao port.

"The Board will allot 32 sq m to each of the displaced persons irrespective of
the area encroached upon," Surendra Sirsat, board chairman said. The GRB has
constructed 256 tenements through the PWD for rehabilitation. Called the Goa
Rehabilitation Scheme (Rehabilitation of 4-lane NH 17-B displaced persons), it
has been notified for objections and suggestions for two weeks from the
publication of the scheme in the official gazette.

A map with boundaries of the area proposed to be acquired for the road passes
has been kept for inspection at the Board office.

The deputy collector, Mormugao has been requested by the Board to draw up a
list within 30 days of persons likely to be displaced by the construction of
the highway.

"The list will be published in the media, setting aside four weeks for
representations, if any," the source added.

The allotment of the units of shelter to those displaced will be done according
to the serial order in the list. "If the oustee accepts the allocation, the
Board will issue an order of grant. But ,if he does not accept the Board's
initial offer or fails to take possession of shelter after issuance of the
order on the appointed date, the Board will not be further responsible to
rehabilitate him," Sirsat said.

The displaced person's economic conditions will also be taken into account
while considering him for allotment.

[Goanet] Do we have White Goans?

2010-05-17 Thread Gabe Menezes
Race under fire: Is being white something you can learn?

What does it mean to be white? An explosive new book by an American academic
argues that whiteness isn't biological at all – in fact, it can be learned.
Precious Williams disagrees..The Conservative Party's first-ever black
female MP, Helen Grant, has just been elected. And across the pond, there is
a black man in the White House. Or is there? A controversial new book, The
History of White People, claims that Barack Obama is, to all intents and
purposes, white

[Goanet] Tar On Goan Beaches Has Become Seasonal

2010-05-17 Thread Freddy Fernandes
Tar On Goan Beaches Has Become Seasonal

In Goa a lot of things are seasonal, Goan weddings too are mostly preferred
during the holidays, Diwali, Christmas or the summer Holiday. So also
harvesting, and the conventional fruits too have their seasons, so do dogs,
apart from all these, during the end of the summer, April, May we have another
season for tar balls to make way to the shores, I have been a witness to this
absurd phenomena for a couple of decades and as time goes by the amount of this
unhealthy and unwarranted residue just keeps on increasing.

The whole year round we have visitors from all over the world visiting Goan
beaches and our coastline, although our beaches are far from being what they use
to be, they are still accessible, but come April, May we are stuck with tar
deposits all along our coast, in our village because of the smallness of the
seafront it's appalling to see four to six inches of tar all along our beach
front making a mess of our beach, the only option we have is to set fire to it
late in the evenings, otherwise we have to wait for the heavy monsoons to come
and wash it away.

During this particular season every year this aberration makes it's presence
felt, affecting sea life, birds and us humans as well. Most of us in the
village like to have a dip in the sea before we proceed to the spring which is
just a few steps away from the sea, but during this particular time, if you
venture into the sea, you could have a tan that the Africans could envy, and the
tar even reaches the spring, making it unusable.

Though our authorities have been notified about the tar deluge no action has
come forth. What can be the source of this highly pollutant chemical compound ?
>From were does this tar come ? Can it be the ships, barges, oil tanks or even
the Zuari Agro-chemical factory ? This particular phenomena occurs year after
year without fail. So there must be some one or some people, who do some
process which results into the pollution of our beaches and our environment. Our
Authorities have to find this source and stop this deadly deluge.

Although year after year this particular problem is highlighted by the media,
our authorities have not taken any action nor have they come up with any action
plan to stop this aberration. Countries like Japan, Singapore and the USA have
placed stringent law against defaulters polluting their water, and even a stain
or a blob in the sea by the vessel, will immediately invite repercussions that
will give the defaulting companies or the owners, sleepless nights and burn a
huge hole in their finances as well.

Why can't we have these stringent laws in place to protect our beaches and our
environment ? If one visits the Cutbona jetty in south Goa, it's appalling to
see oil and diesel spilled all over the floor as well as the water and nobody
cares, over the years, the shell fish, cockles, mussels, snails and oysters have
all but disappeared from this area, even the crabs smell of oil. When will our
authorities wise up or will they ever ?

I am personally organizing a fund-raising contest to benefit Goa Sudharop
and Goan Chitra museum. After prizes, potentially USD $980 (approximately
44,000 rupees) will be raised. Goa Sudharop will donate the money to benefit
the incredible Goan Chitra museum which showcases Goan culture, see
http://www.goachitra.com/museum.html.

Here is how the contest works and is open to anyone. 64 tickets will be
sold. Only USD $20 per entry; there are 32 teams participating in the World
Cup, let us try and get 64 entries i.e. two entries per team. Winners of the
World Cup (two tickets) get USD $100 each and runner-up of the World Cup
(two tickets) get USD $50 each.

After confirmation that all 64 tickets have been sold, I will sit down and
do a draw from a hat and assign a World Cup team to each ticket. Please note
you cannot pick a particular team, a team will be assigned to each ticket by
random drawing.

To buy a ticket through PayPal, click on the DONATE NOW button at
www.goasudharop.org (home page, bottom left hand side). Each ticket is USD
$20. Or you can mail a check for the number of your tickets payable to "GOA
SUDHAROP", and mail to ACARIA ALMEIDA, TREASURER, P.O. BOX 6144, MORAGA, CA,
94570, USA.

See the teams at the official Web Site :-
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/teams/index.html

Good luck and let's have some fun rooting for a team! If you wish you may
buy more than one ticket (highly encouraged!). Please help a good cause.

Please pass this message on to your family and friends. Thank you in
advance.
