[Goanet] (Goanet] Long term Visas 15 30years to PIO OCI

2010-08-14 Thread JoeGoaUk
(Goanet] Long term Visas 15 30years to PIO OCI

ref above topic

Quote:1
Appealed to all PIO to apply for the PIO or the
Overseas citizen of India (OCI) card.
If they apply for either the PIO or the OCI card, they
can stay in India for 15 years (in case of the PIO card) and
30 years (in case ofthe OCI) card.

OCI CARD HOLDERS CAN STAY IN INDIA  ONLY 30 YEARS?
WHICH MEANS, I CAN STAY IN INDIA UNTIL I AM 89 ?
(COMPLETES 30 YRS IN 2036)
BUT MY OCI VISA STICKER CLEARLY SAYS
MY VISA VALLID FOR LEFETIME OR LIFELONG (See pic)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk8/658550483/sizes/l/

WHAT’S LIFELONG? 30YEARS?

OR IS IT LIKE INDIAN CELLULAR Cos WHERE THEY SAY
PAY  Rs.100 AND GET LIFETIME VALIDITY WHERE
LIFETIME HERE MEANS THE LIFTIME  OF THE CONTRACT
OR LICENSE

Quote 2
I had received several complaints from Goans holding
foreign passports that some of our embassies and
High Commissions abroad, issue them tourist visas (valid
for three to six months) at the end of which they have to leave the
country though they have property matters
to deal with and have families here, Faleiro said adding
that following the complaints he had taken up the issue
with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.

THOSE WHO DO NOT WISH TO TAKE  PIO OR OCI CARD
THEY CAN STILL TAKE 5 YEAR LONG TERM ENTRY VISA
WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO PERSONS OF INDIAN ORIGIN
(STILL AVAILABLE IN UK FOR 135 POUNDS SO SAYS
THE WEBSITE)
SO, WHY SUCH A BIG FUS?

IT IS STRONGLY ADVISABLE THOSE WITH ROOTS IN GOA/INDIA
TO GO FOR SUCH LONG TERM VISA.
SHOULD THERE BE SOME EMERGENCIES,
ONE CAN LEAVE HIS/HER COUNTRY SAME DAY OR
THE EARLIEST WIHTOUT WAITING TO APPLY FOR
FRESH VISA WHICH COULD TAKE TIME.

IT MAY BE NOTED THAT MOST EMBASSIES ARE OPEN
DURING WEEKENDS AND EVEN ON HOLIDAYS  TO HELP
WITH YOUR EMERGENCY TRAVEL.
e.g.  HIGH COMMISSION OF INDIA –LONDON
OPEN  till 1900 hours on working days and from
10AM to 5.30PM during Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

ALL THESE FACILITIES ARE THERE BUT MANY OF US
ARE UNWARE OF IT.
e.g. SOMEONE’S MOTHER DIED IN GOA ON FRIDAY, HER
SONS GOT THE NEWS AROUND 4PM LONDON TIME BUT
THEY WAITED TILL MONDAY TO VISIT EMBASSY
ASSUMING THE OFFICE REMAINs CLOSED DURING
THE WEEKENDS.  THUS DELAYING THE FUNERAL BY UPTO
3 more DAYS.
IF THEY HAD PIO/OCI OR 5 YR LONG TERM VISA,
THEY COULD HAVE LEFT LONDON FRIDAY ITSELF.
THEY ARE IN LONDON FOR OVER 25YRS THOUGH.

During my stay in UK say for 12 years,
I have had 3  FIVE years long term visas
First costing me just  about 63 pounds in 1994
Initially, I had 2-3 short term visas too.

Ref. Longterm visia
http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk/visa-categories.aspx

6month tourist visa cost about 40 pounds (inc. service charge),
delivery charges add 8 pounds.

PIO card cost 215 pounds

[Goanet] Coconut Breaking Game (Contest) at Agassaim

2010-08-14 Thread JoeGoaUk
Coconut Breaking Game

We wanted to be there on time
So we arrived on time i.e. 3pm
No, it did not start at the stated time nor it started
90 minutes later
But it actually did at  4.55pm.
As if they were waiting for their Chief Guest the
Local MLA and his brother, Zila Member.
No sooner, they arrived than the event started.
Local Sarpanch and the panch made it around
4pm though.

Tip: Next time when you know there is a politician as chief guest,
be there at least one hour later than the stated time.
In our case, we did not know nor it was said in the ad etc.

The Game:
This is the first time I ever watched them playing.
It needs two players.
One to set the ball (coconut) rolling and the other
to hit/break the ball using another hand held coconut
as striker.

Mostly, the opposition coconut breaks but sometimes
both break or none breaks.
Yet, there are situations where the opposition’s ball is
safe but the hitter’s (Striker) ball breaks

All the  winning/losing situations are selectively
included in the clip.

It’s Young Boys of Dugrem presentation of their
40th Traditional Coconut Breaking contest
on the feast day of their Paron St. Lawrence
on 10th August (every year same time/same venue)

pics were supplied earlier
There were other programs too such as Konkani songs,
Magic Show by Anil, Kids Fancy Dress, Folk dance followed
by Volley ball match between Curca Boys v/s Hausi Band

Sadly, we could not wait to watch all this as we
already wasted about 2 hours.. It was our feast too
and he had our own programes at home.
Except some parts of Magic Show by a local (Settled
in Loutorim) which we liked a lot.
A clip may be uploaded if time and mood permit.

[Goanet] Tarcar Memorial State Selection Chess: Youngsters steal show as Gauri emerges Champion

2010-08-14 Thread Sandeep Heble
Augusto,

Thank you for the encouraging words.

We had engaged the services of Mr. Tanay Kaisare (our Chief Arbiter)
and Pinge was there as a coordinator from the Association side, but
all the others especially Mr. Peter Rebello, Adv. Anita Thorat,
Jyotsna Sarapalli, Viju Gaonkar, Santosh Dempo and Latika Ahuja came
voluntarily and worked tirelessly to lighten our hands. Sanjay Barve
was in the organizing Team too but he was not there as an Arbiter. The
spirit shown by them all was indeed incredible. Needless to say, had
it not been for them, it would have been difficult if not impossible
for us to conduct the championship so smoothly.

We were particularly delighted to have with us the presence of Dr
Peter Carvalho during the ‘Presentation function’. Dr Carvalho has
been providing clocks and Boards free of cost to the organizers and
his presence came as a big boost to us.

I agree with you that the present Sports Policy is flawed but only
to a limited extent. When we first approached our sponsor, he was
wondering whether we would get a response of at least 50 participants
(and he would have been happy with that considering that in the past
the figures have barely crossed twenty) but the final response left
him in a virtual sense of ecstasy and committed to sponsoring more of
such events in the future.

The Sports Policy does have its failings but on the brighter side,
with more participants being lured by the marks on offer, more
sponsors and Corporates will come in which will ultimately benefit the
Sport. All that it needs is a little fine tuning, to ensure that those
who stand in merit stand to gain more marks than those who simply come
to participate.

It was nice to meet you there.

Warm regards
Sandeep

Today, I happened to drop in at the ‘Late Shripad Vishnu Kamat Tarcar
Memorial’ All Goa State Women’s Chess Championship organized by JCI
St. Inez in association with Sports Authority of Goa
and Goa Chess Association.

I was delighted to see the spirit that a number of our chess workers
like  Mr.  Tanay Kaisare, the Chief Arbiter, who was assisted by Mr.
D.R. Pinge, Mr. Peter Rebello, Adv. Anita  Thorat, Jyotsna Sarapalli,
Viju Gaonkar, Santosh Dempo and Latika Ahuja displayed in ensuring the
success of the tournament. I also noticed Sanjay Barve there although
his name is not mentioned among the assistant arbiters.

I had a chance to shake the hands of Sandeep Heble, who was
instrumental in conducting this tournament. It was quite nice to see
someone who I don't think is an active chess player promoting this
game. The Goa Chess Association would be wise to co-opt such able
organisational people so that the game becomes more popular. In the
meanwhile the GCA under the President-ship
of Asheh Keni will I am sure be working overtime to ensure that all
chess workers including people of the calibre of Dr. Peter Carvalho,
and Shrikant Barve are made to display their love for the game in a
more overt manner.

I think my friend Shrikant Barve, who has done much for chess but is
currently under a cloud for silly reasons, must be very pleased.
That's because his ward, Gauri Hadkonkar, a contemporary and rival of
Ivana Furtado, (who incidentally Barve once used to coach) became the
Goa's Woman's champion.

One of the features of this tournament was the record number of
entries. One hundred and forty. Although the popularity of chess is
rising in leaps and bounds,I  I think that this number has come up in
a somewhat artificial manner. The Goa government has come up with a
policy that grants a goodly number of grace marks to those who
participate in State, National and Inter-School/Higher Secondary
events. So a large number of children enrolled in order to avail
themselves of those grace marks. Some thought should be given to this
abuse of a good system.

Anyway, leaving all that aside, congratulations are due to Sandeep
Heble and his team for successfully conducting the Goa Women's Chess
Championship.

Cheers
Augusto

[Goanet] INDEPENDENT INDIA: THEN AND NOW

2010-08-14 Thread Michael fernandes
INDIA: THEN AND NOW.It’s 00.00.00.Indian Standard Time.
Its midnight . All is calm. A
second has just elapsed. Now it is 00.00.01. It’s the start of a new day. Its
15th of August 1947. It’s the independence day of my country. Of India
my motherland. The people savor the first fresh air of freedom. Soon they will
witness the first dawn of free India .

I was born much later. Born a free
man. Unlike my father who was born during the British rule. A slave of the
whites. Sixty-three years have gone by. “ How lucky I am” I tell my dad. He
shakes
his head. “My boy are you really proud? You were not there during the raj. You
know not anything about it. What you see today, no doubt, is Independent India .
People are not forced to work. To keep our country clean. To grow more food. To
produce more goods. To make better quality products”  “Those were the days. The
roads were
clean. The footpaths were meant to walk on, not to build huts. Gardens and
parks were so very well maintained, not used as urinals. Every one had a proper
house. The food we ate was unadulterated, so was medicine. The building
material had quality steel. Bridges did not collapse in fourteen years time,
like the Mandovi Bridge
in Goa . The public servants worked for you and
me honestly. No one accepted bribes. Not just human beings but animals too ate
well. Money scams and fodder scams were unheard of then. Money spent for animal
fodder was not pocketed by hungry government officials. Guns were bought to
defend our land not to stash kickbacks in foreign banks. Now tell me son” said
he. “Who should be lucky?”

Listening to him, I Hang my head in
shame. He went on “Son, are we really free? Or are we the slaves of the greed
of our very own people? Have we elected our representatives to hoard money? To
allow black marketing to flourish? To accept bribes? To allow someone to
adulterate our food and medicines? To degenerate law and order and make our
country an unsafe place? To make a mockery of our judicial system? What can we
accept when the lawless have now become the guardians of our law? When dacoits
and criminals, murderers and forgers rule over us. My pride gave way. How could
I be proud on this 50th year of Independence ? I closed my eyes and said a
prayer.

On this fifteenth  day of August,
my Lord my God God,

    I pray for my country’s
good.

    To give us Christ like
leaders lord,

    Who will feed the
multitude.

    Who will lead the
present misguided youth,

Who will fearlessly pursue the truth.

Who will not let shoot innocent lives,

But heal their bleeding wounds.

Without armed guards, who will walk in the
crowd,

When they come out on their rounds.

For the sake of this country,

Who will sacrifice their lives,

And make every Indian proud.

  Amen.Michael Fernandes

[Goanet] As India Celebrates-Six Deadly Sins That Plague India

2010-08-14 Thread Vasant Baliga
At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to
life and freedom – Jawaharlal Nehru on 14 August 1947
Cut to 63 years after freedom and we wake up to an India that our martyrs never
dreamed of. Today, India has become a land of more wrongs than rights as our
nation is symbolised by abject poverty, corruption, a huge population and lack
of transparent governance, to name a few ills.
India is free; so are we, but have we really valued the freedom that has been
granted to us by martyrs who fought valiantly so that we could be born free? Do
we think it’s a part of our legacy that has been passed on to us through the
years?
Freedom is not about being free, it is a great responsibility. Freedom does not
give us the right to misuse our rights, but it gives us the power to make
better
choices. This Independence Day, let us stay away from the usual festivities and
pledge to free ourselves from the ills that exist in our society to build a
better India. For this, we need to get rid of the six deadly sins.
Read on.

[Goanet] HC tells VPs not to issue fresh licences for construction

2010-08-14 Thread roger dsouza
Newspaper reports indicate that the High Court of Bombay at Goa has told the
Village Panchayats not to issue fresh licences for construction licences
until they comply with the earlier court directions regarding garbage
disposal.

Would the Village Panchayats comply with the directions of the High Court
of Bombay at Goa? That's to be seen. The Builders-Politician-Government
Machinery nexus is too strong and it's obvious that they will do everything
possible to destroy Goa and do everything possible to have their way even
going against the High Court.

The Government of Goa would of course have it's own tricks up it's sleeves
to bypass the High Court's mandate. We've seen how the MLA of Cortalim
Constituency Mauvin Godinho at the recent Assembly Session was asking for
100,000 square metres of precious Goan land in his Constituency to set up a
garbage disposal unit for just 6 villages! He is working overtime to make
sure that the real estate lobby is protected at any cost and is known to
issue threats to poor villagers not to oppose the development that his
builder friends have planned for Goa. The ads in the newspapers that the
Real Estate Lobby put out to wish him for his Birthday was enough evidence
where they all have their undying love pouring out in public and why. Not to
be missed was the one page write-up by his cousin Agnelo Alcacoas from
Queeny Realty Estate along with photographs of the Minister’s family
including his wife and children. Interestingly that one page ad was paid by
the Contractor who was awarded the contract of constructing Kala Bhavan at
Sancoale! If I was Maria Divina the Minister’s wife or one of his children I
would be ashamed to be openly flaunted and feted in the newspapers and
public forum by the Builders in order to seek the favours of the Minister.

The following is the latest update from the Times of India.

HC tells VPs not to issue fresh licences for construction

TNN, Aug 12, 2010, 05.19am IST

PANAJI: The high court of
Bombayhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=high%20court%20of%20Bombayat
Goa on Wednesday directed several village
panchayatshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=village%20panchayats(VPs)
in the state not to issue further construction licences until they
comply with the earlier court directions regarding garbage disposal.

The high court had on March 10 directed the Goa State Pollution
Controlhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Pollution%20ControlBoard
(GSPCB) to conduct inspections for verifying whether the VPs had
established functioning
compostinghttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=compostingunits.
The court had passed the directions in a suo motu petition relating
to streamlining the garbage disposal system in the state.

The GSPCB had on April 7 filed a detailed inspection report before the court
pertaining to the inspection of garbage composting units of 12 village
panchayats in the state.

The officials of the GSPCB conducted inspections of the units set up by
Calangute, Betalbatim, Majorda-Utorda-Calata, Cavelossim,
Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim, Chicalim, Chicolna, Sancoale, Arambol, Morjim,
Paliem and Mandrem village panchayats.

The inspection report filed by the GSPCB had pointed out progress by some of
the VPs in the collection and disposal of garbage, while some had not
complied with the court's earlier orders with regards to recycling plastic
waste.

I am not saying that BJP is guilt free, but it definitley

 Sameer,
I agree with you in what U say below; that there are
persons in the Congress too who are casteist and caste
political; and there are persons that switch parties often
like 'a merry go round' and a transistor switch!.

However in the case of the RSS, BJP and like groups,it is
their doctrine and party preamble, and their Manifesto, on
Hindu Fascist Supremacy; and these consider only the top
castes as real Hindus; all others are only pawns in their
filthy game of 'alcat Raj'. Low caste and casteless hindus
are used by the top caste people to serve them up to a
point; but in reality these people are slaves and a means to
 an end.

Re: [Goanet] Caste and Creed

2010-08-14 Thread Nascy Caldeira
Dear Vasant,
I have only pointed at Indian Hindus for the cste system prevailing in India
and amongst Indians abroad too.
U have gone on a tangent and using Sameer's words as my posting. That is where
Sameer is trying to confuse. Neither have I spoken of vote banks politics here
and only of the casteist saffron brigade. I have spoken purely of the evil of
caste and casteism, that prevails only in India and only among Indians abroad.

Here even U are trying to confuse people about Class distinctions and Caste
distinctions. U guys are saying that, one has to be born a Brahmin to be a
Brahmin, and once a Brahmin, always a Brahmin!
Does this not imply racism? If I bring a harijan , educated and scholarly in
Hindu religion, will you ordain this persona Brahmin? NO U will not.
Or will M. Parrikar loose his marbles and be harijan one day?

That is casteism. A person born into a caste is always there, even in so called
re -incarnation? He/she cannnot shake it off! 'Cause of the imposed system by
the upper castes!

That is Casteism quite different to Class distinction that u are trying to get
'readers' confused with! If it were not, then there would be no caste names, in
the first place.

Then U are talking about Bhuddists. There are hardly any Bhuddists in India to
make an impact. Bhuddists and Bhuddism thrived all around India; Buddism was
driven out of India five centuries ago? Why and by the upper casted Hindus, as
then, there would be no caste prevailing and all would be equal, except in
individual or family or group achievements. The caste Hindus never liked it, so
they drove Bhudda and his teachings away.

A casteless society, that is what I want for India. Therefore RENOUNCE
CASTEISM NOW, and get into a program to Eradicate This EVIL. U do not have to
remove yourself from the caste that U are born into, if U are in a priveledged
caste! But do denounce Casteism. That is a BIG Difference!

Caste or Race is neutral to Christianity as a religion; there are Christian
Hindu, Christian African, Christian Chinese, Christian Europeon, and Christian
Mixed persons and so on.

So when a Brahmin caste/ race person becomes a Christian he is still a brahmin
since he belongs to the race/ caste. All that he has to do is not to practice
Casteism (that the Hindus do) or any sly distinctions based on caste system. I
think that is being accomplshed by and large among Goan brahmin Christians. The
Christian Religion is not about social mores, and accommodates the race/caste
the person is born into. His behavior the is for his 'Conscience and his
understanding of God's Love.

Hindu upper castes are utterly lacking in God's Love for others, more so the so
called lower castes. That is what is BAD about the HINDU society, and the
Casteists.

Vasant, any amount of mixing up of 'Topics' will not get the Mud off the
Casteist Hindu. Mud Sticks remember? and it has stuck for centuries.
So what are U doing about it. The saffron brigade is trying to entrench this
position by trying to get into power in New Delhi, and then they will just
ignore all who are not upper caste Hindus and even have a POGRAM, like in
Modi's Gujerat.

Enough said for now. India must Change now. Either all become Brahmins or all
become Sudhir. What is your choice Vasant?
No hard feeligs.
Nascy.

does not wash and is not borne out by facts.

Christianity and Islam are hundreds of years old in India

Do you honestly blame Hindus for the Casteism in

[Goanet] Poemoods:08-Celebrating Freedom

2010-08-14 Thread Dr.Nandkumar Kamat
Celebrating freedom…

I celebrate freedom…
Freedom to say what I want and write,
I am an Indian , I love India,
India is part of my system,
I live for India, I wish to die for India,
Be part of same elements of which my ancestors had been part!
This country has given me everything,
The nutrients to carve me as a foetus,
My mother’s nourishing milk,
I never grew my own food,
And never inquired while purchasing whether a farmer from Punjab grew my wheat,
And whether my lentils came from MP and spices from Kerala,
I just take my country for granted, every day..
Because I am free,
I have freedom to cry, shout, curse, condemn, protest, exhibit anger,
privately, publicly!
I know there is no power to tie my hands,
Imprison my pen, electrocute my thoughts, castrate my brain...
Freedom is flourishing everywhere, getting stronger…louder
In this country which was looted, raped and plundered,
To build the mills of Manchester,
And forge the Steel of Glasgow,
And transport the affluence to Americas,
Those who drank blood of India,
Today are scared of India,
Those who cut the thumbs of the weavers of Dhakka,
Are wearing the Woolens of Ludhiana,
Gentries who worried about India’s survival,
Taste the Indian curry in Londoners hurry!
I celebrate the freedom,
Which made me what I am today,
It is not my country which has let me down,
We have let down our country,
We wrote tomes on poverty, even got a Nobel prize,
For theory of entitlement and economics of equity,
But spent more money on pet food,
Than throwing a morsel to satiate the nearest crying orphan on the footpath,
Was there really a man like Gandhi in this country,
A man who is not from Cinema?
I have no complaints about my freedom,
I have grievances against my countrymen, I wish I cut and paste Khalil
Gibran here!
But India is Not Lebanon!
We talk, write and criticize a lot,
We take sadistic pleasures in describing how this country is going to dogs,
As if the rest of world has turned into a paradise,
What is dictatorial China, a nation or an AC prison?
Where is the comparison?
India is India-there is no match.. visit Kumbhmela,
Where else would I find 30 million people melted as one crowd?
What is that magnetism which still binds the country?
The charm which Jawahar attempted to discover?
Aurobindo demystified, Vivekananda glorified,
Rajneesh exported, blessed Mother Teresa embraced in humble service?
A xenophobic country can not have 426 living languages,
India’s borders were always unguarded,
“find a plant which has no medicinal use’ had told Charaka’s teacher
in University of Takshsheela, When Charaka had asked anxiously to
his Guru in Ayurveda,
“Master , when my education would end?”
“it is over” had told the master,
When Charaka returned empty handed.
That’s the spirit of India. Discovery. Pursuit of Knowledge for the
sake of Knowledge.
Freedom fits this country like an inseparable bionic ornament!
But we refuse to enjoy the freedom,
“We, the people’ are real masters of our country,
The power is WITHIN us…
It was discovered in 1857, 1942, 1977… and forgotten…
The Imperial Mauryans could have marched in Macedonia,
Akbar could have conquered Persia,
Marathas could have ruled Afghanistan,
But India did not pursue such chakravarti agendas…
Indians were happy in building a Borobudur, An Angkorwat somewhere,
A stupa here, A zen garden there,
We have let down this great country, this civilization,
We have layers of gossips, but no pregnant news,
Of hope, resurgence, reconstruction and repair,
We cultivate tremendous self pity,
A trait our children have picked up from us!
Our individual poor self image,
Collectively contributes to a nation’s self image,
What use is this freedom, if I shop for new chains to bind me?
What use is this freedom if I curse my own mother?
What use is this freedom, if I don’t free myself,
Who has stopped me?
From self liberation?
Where is that Sufi, a Kabir, A bulle Shah, A tagore?
Why I refuse to compose the songs and sing for my self liberation?
Somewhere inside I know, I may deny, but I know,
That this soil is sacred,
The elements of our ancestors are mixed in it!
Having tasted the freedom, I need to be worthy of it,
I have to rise from my own ashes,
And see the country rise!
That is our Karma, that’s our collective moksha, that’s independence,
that’s freedom!
Long live Indian people, the great Indian republic!
Vande Mataram!
Jai Hind!
God Bless India!

[Goanet] The Slap...

2010-08-14 Thread Frederick Noronha
The Guardian
[http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/jul/31/the-slap-christos-tsiolkas-booker]
is critical of Christos Tsoilkas book, 'The Slap', which is apparently
drawing attention from Down Under. Question: one character in the book
is an Anglo-Indian vet. Is she a Goan by any chance? (I ask because
the film 'Bow Barracks Forever' was supposed to be about
Anglo-Indians but had so many Goan sounding names in it.

Does The Slap deal with contentious issues of multiculturalism and
racism in Australia? Only read summaries of it... FN
