[Goanet] Thinking aloud.....................
After reading posts on this forum bashing the Portuguese, and also the Congress party for discrimination against those of the Hindu faith, I got to thinking Lets set a day aside to demonstrate in Panjim for each of the following: 1. The Aryans who invaded India from the North and imposed their beliefs on the true sons of the soil, which gave rise to the Hindu faith and the Caste system. 2. The Moghuls (Mongols), Afghans, Iranians who invaded India and brought the Muslim faith to the sub-continent. 3. The Portuguese who were invited to help the Hindus to overthrow the Muslim rulers of Goa, and then overstayed their visit, and brought Christianity to a few Goans. Thankfully very few of us speak Portuguese. I only know a couple of swear words in Portuguese. 4. The British with their divide and rule policy who conquered India and gave us this hated language called ENGLISH which we shamefully use for discourse on this forum, as well as Government offices, the Indian Parliament, most if not all our Educational institutions and Universities. Lets ban English the hated language of our colonizers and all vestiges of English names in India, Let us start here ! What then will call our National language - Hindi or Tamil ? 5. The Congress party for discriminating against Hindus Since most of our ancestors were immigrants to the Indian sub-continent, let us get out of India and leave it to the true original inhabitants of India, such as the Tribals, the Gaude and whatever. Only then will we have peace and understanding on this forum and among all Goencars.

Frederick, I appreciate your concerns/facts about 'balance of power'. But this is about sporting prowess, and balance of sports/ soccer power; and Qatar has only got one soccer team and presntly 'no infrastructure at all'. I think this calls for Universal high level Judicial Enquiry into the whole FIFA process of selection etc. Only then will the truth be known. Re: [Goanet] Exploding the myths on Goanet
Dears, I found the following Frederick Noronha [FN] very well scripted post a mixture of known truths, appropriate and inappropriate interpretations, figments of non-knowledge, misrepresentation and a possible attempt to either taunt or suppress Santosh Helekar. Allow me to state again that I personally find almost all of Santosh's writings quite well researched and scientifically supported and defensible. I do expect that those, like me and FN, who are not in Santoshbab's intellectual genre, will not always understand Santoshbab. Happens! For instance, I do not understand why Santoshbab tries to correct the unsupportable views of every Con, Dona and Larry on GoaNet. To me, it is a painful process - for another 'bright spark' will come and say something really brilliant e.g. If Sardars in the UK are exempt from using helmets, why should I have to wear them in Goa? Some might believe that Frederick is smarting from criticism of his own misuse of Goanet (as in flagrant and repeated violation of GoaNet rules) and the WWW spreading of stories in which truth was admixed with obvious 'bogusities'. The added issue is the refusal of folks like Frederick to correct their errors. (Let me acknowledge in advance a well used worn cliché i.e. Doctors mistakes bury etc). Does FN acknowledge that untruths spread by journos eventually hurt the populace? Does he (at least now) accept that the (financially motivated IMHO) 'TRS Vasco da Gama disturbance' actually hurt the relationships between Catholic and Hindu Goans? Anyway ..now to the individual points in FN's message. On 3 December 2010 00:49, Frederick Noronha [FN] wrote: FN [1] Goanet has also been used by people with an undying faith in a science-can-do-no-wrong ideology, and their own ideology is tasteless, colourless and odorless enough to them and therefore implies a lack of ideology. jc: and by others including FN for their own purposes. - FN [2] Or by those who believe that taunting individuals with a particular point of view is the best way to diminish scientific illiteracy and take rationalism forward. jc: As though FN has never taunted anyone. - FN [3] The claims made below have more to do with creating straw-men and then going about demolishing the same with great ease. Naturally. jc: another cliché - FN [4] To be fair, I think what has often been argued on Goanet is not what Helekar claims, but the following: [5] 1. That not everything is necessarily better off in post-colonial times, and a few things have actually deteriorated for the worse since. jc: Where has Santoshbab claimed the above? - FN [5] 2. That life expectancies were far lower, on average, in earlier times (whether colonial or not, including in the non-colonised world), but some people did live healthier lives then too. Also, the diseases of affluence, which have since crept in and turned widespread today, were restricted to a tiny section then. jc: On what basis is FN making the above argument? There are, I submit, multiple factors involved. Has FN studied them enough to make a judgment? - F [5] 3. That scientific progress and modern scientific medicine is not the only factor to be credited with improving human lives. That even the progress of science and medicine has come accompanied with some gross errors, the misuse and abuse of science and technology (for purposes like war, etc) and the like. jc: Abuse and Misuse having been accepted, Who has claimed the sole credit for improving human lives? - FN [5] 4.(a) That there could be alternative routes to healing, which may well work in some cases, and still is the only or main option for a large number of people in the planet -- for reasons of economics, preference, tradition, access, whatever. jc: There surely could be BUT ...what exactly is Santoshbab suggesting and the 'alternativos' refusing to submit to? Does FN believe in the Rule of Law? Does he believe that the State has a right to impose legal guidelines which require that ALL medications which are given to the citizens of the State, be tested? Accepting that Indian is wrought with adulteration, fraud, inducement etc in the health industry and profession, does it justify the turning off .of the Rule of Law? Haven't modern medicines come from plants after testing and purification? What is Frederick Noronha saying: Do not test the medicinesjust allow folks to prescribe bush or arsenic? http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20091018/arts/arts5.html - FN [5] 4 (b) These can neither be wished away, nor should people who opt for these be blocked from accessing the same using the excuses and labels like ncient superstitions, faith-based nostrums, religious rituals and paranormal practices. jc: Education and Information isn't just wishing away. Individual adults have a right to consume what they wish, even Methylated Spirits and Hashish. The State has a duty to protect its citizens. Enough said excuse any typos scripted at one go jc
[Goanet] Targetting the Portuguese
Comments : Camilo FernandesI am in total agreement with Floriano as regards his post (given below) on the so called freedom fighters. These so called freedom fighters are only in name but in reality they are jokers and fake. They and their supporters have nothing better to do and are just crazy to grab some publicity. They are just hypocrites who are silent and turn a blind eye to the present politicians who are destroying our beautiful Goa after it got its independence. Though Goa got its freedeom nearly 47 years ago, they prefer dwelling in the past and burying their head to the present wrongs being done in Goa where Goa daily is being raped and destroyed right under their noses by the politicians/builders. As Floriano rightly pointed out true freedom fighters have not accepted dole. In fact some of the so called freedom fighters/family members/heirs/supporters have quietly opted for Portuguese nationality. They protest against Portuguese names/English names but in reality make sure that their family members/heirs go only to Catholic English schools. In other words they will preach one thing but practice another thing. The Goan fishermen gave a fitting reply to their protest against the friendly visit of a Portuguese ship by giving them a fond, colourful and rousing send off in true Goan fashion.Dev borem korum,Camilo Fernandes floriano wrote :floriano.l...@gmail.comYou must understand:1). Some of the frontrunners of this so called Hindu-based patriotic citizens are non Goans and do not have an iota of Goan blood running into their veins. This category is just the mob who are feeling bold for being unchallenged by true Goans . One of them is Adv. Satish Sonak who is a rank outsider.2) All this tamasha against the Portuguese rule in Goa is just the 'show' to justify the gobbling of fat pensions by these so called Freedom Fighters ( who are, in Goan parlance known as 'Double Fs)3) That these same so called Double Fs secretly pray in the confines of their homes that Portuguese controversy may live forever for the dole at the cost of the Goan tax-payers. In all probability they genuflect and say 'Namaste' to the Portuguese for keeping them in good stead and for being continually employed.4) Practically all of these Double Fs who are staging the show against the Portuguese have an axe to grind. They were behind bars for petty crimes and not for displaying their patriotism for Goa or India. Those true Freedom Fighters (if any alive today) have never accepted the dole.
[Goanet] SANCTITY OF OLD GOA CHURCHES DEFILED -ASI
A huge multitude of devotees of all faiths and pilgrims partook in the several masses beginning from 0400 hrs today followed by the feast mass at 1030 hrs. The Archbishop of Mumbai, Cardinal Oswald Gracias was the main celebrant alongwith Archbishop Patriach Filipe Neri Ferrao Archbishop Patriach Emeritus Dr Raul Niclau Gonsalves and Bishop Aleixio Dias of Port Blair. The kissing of the altar where in the casket of St Francis Xavier lies was a long drawn affair almost three hours --- with the men women and children and old--- having to move in the 8 rows before reaching the main altar but with a roof cover to save one from the sun. But one pilgrim from Andhra Pradesh was non plussed on seeing the devotees go about this ritual with a reverential devotion -- after all this sacrifice would eventually cleanse one of his or .her sins he remarked. There were some shortcomings the drinking water tanks ran dry on some ocassions. Replenishments were not forthcoming until the vounteers were coaxed and cajoled to do so. There were volunteers all around but they were too tired perhaps having started on from 0300 hrs and that was understandable. But this writer was disgusted to witness the scene near the St Catherine Chapel. The area was stinking of urine and defecation was seen almost touching the precincts of this Chapel. Alfonso de Albuquerque the navigator would have turned in his grave to see the first chapel he had built after the conquest of Goa on 25th November, 1510. and which celebrated the 500th anniversary on the commencement of the Novenas also the Feast of St Catherine in this sorry state. When this writer interacted with a female wet sweeper around the vicinity she claimed that there were no adequate toilets to meet the exigencies of such a huge multitude. There were no lights around in most of these vulnerable areas during the Novenas which commenced on 25th November, 2010 and apparently many made use of the darkness to answer natures call. Most of them were hawkers who have crammed up the roads, who took advantage of the dark and a fair share of devoutees too, When quizzed further of how the ASI authorities who have a security force in place could not prevent this she preferred this question to be addressed to the authorities. Noting that this writer was taking photographs and conducting a detour of the area de novo she immediately stated that they did clear some of it -- Later they had put calcinated lime and disinfectants around the Chapel but not before many foreigners were dumbstruck by this dismal picture. There is also a water body lying partly being restored with cement concrete works but the stench of the water body speaks volumes of the neglect. As one moves down the road leading towards the Diwar end ferry service and the fishermen's jetty the areas in the vicinity of the Old Goa Heritage Churches produce a similar odour. How could the ASI authorities neglect all this. Above all the Old Goa Panchayat has its share of blame for the scant disregard to this place of worship. The MLA of Cumbarjua Mr Pandurang Madkaikar who has his house within the 100 meters of the Bom Jesus (violating the ASI rules ??) Basilica should have atleast assisted the Panchayat headed by his spouse to ensure that the non biodegradable and degradable waste was cleared off on a daily basis. It was a disgusting site to see mounds of waster littered all over. True there were mobile toilets provided around the Bom Jesus Basilica but what about the other areas ?? Even beyond the window on the North end of the KRISTU KALA MANDIR or old Archbishops Palace the stench was unbearable. There are security personnel staying in some of these places near the public toilets but people used the open spaces. Meanwhile this writer in a teletalk with Fr Leonardo Correia 0832 2284710 learnt that the ASI official did not enjoy cordial relations with the Church authorities. Agreed that the property and churches are in the custody of the ASI but the lackadaisical attitude and highhandedness of the authorities alone according to him has resulted in this dismal state of affairs. He cited another instance where the ASI authorities had objected to the customary hoisting of the Flag on Independence day as their permission was not sought One conservation assistant Mr Verma 9421747752 who this writer contacted on mobile confessed that the sanctioned strenght of watch and ward was not adequate, despite several representations to that effect made to the ASI authorities in New Delhi. He also found fault with the Goa Police personnel who had tiffs with the ASI security personnel -- he claimed that the Goa Police personnel claimed that they were in control of the venue and therefore could permit the cars to be parked where they desired since they had the orders of the Collector and District Magistrate -- though they had
[Goanet] GBA's 4th Anniversary of Miners and builders Interests
Well, it is the 4th Anniversary of Goa Bachao Abhiyan. Time to take stock of how much we have achieved and what needs to be done. states an e-mail. It further goes to state the objectives for which it was formed. The main cause that led to the formation of GBA was the objection to the mass conversion of land for construction in the Regional Plan 2011 which was a threat to the identity and sustainability of Goa. . The main demands raised were 1) revocation of the Regional Plan 2011 2) Formulation of a new Plan by a participatory process as per the 73rd and 74th amendment of the Constitution. It goes on to claim that, The first objective was achieved in 2007. All of us who were part of this movement take great pride in recounting this success story. No one will deny this achievement of objective No. 1. GBA admits that it is still struggling with its objective No. 2. However, it conveniently seems to be pushing the blame on the government. If at all the government has suceeded in bull dozing its own understanding about particiapatory planning, it is definitely GBA that must carry the blame for the betrayal of the people for the following reasons; 1. GBA's top brass began playing footsie with the Government no sooner the Margao based Digambar Kamat took over the reigns in june 2007. From then on the effort was on how to cultivate a cooperative role with the government where people opposing government policies began to be looked at as anarchists. 2. The report of the workshop held in August 2007 at Goa International Centre to develop clarity on the Way forward for GBA vis a vis the Regional planning process was strangely made to disappear from GBA's future agendas. 3. When it came to tackling the Goa Town Country Planning Act 1975 before allowing the government to proceed with a new RP, the architects and engineers within GBA seemed to get terribly nervous and began diverting attention. Thereby, the very instrument that gave birth to the infamous RP2011 was deliberately allowed to continue. 4. The conditions were further worsened with the controversial amendments to section 16 16A of the TCP Act and GBA besides mere noises did nothing to get the government to strike it down. The top brass began sabotaging any inititative that would cause inconvenience to the government. 5. The situation was even further worsened with the notification of the Outline Development Plans and what was very interesting is that GBA cheered the people in participating in this parallel planning process. Thus the GBA has allowed scope for a parallel planning process for Goa which is not bound by the RP 2021. 6. Besides being part of the Task Force on RP, GBA has not contributed anything concrete as regards the model of participatory planning that needed to be reflected in the draft report of the TF. The GBA convenor is a signatory to the draft RP 2021 thereby endorsing the planning process for the government. 7. The GBA cheered the people to participate in the consultative process on the RP 2021 instead of questioning the process. At no point did GBA reject this consultative process as not being in accordance with the participatory planning process in the 73rd and 74th Amendment. Thereby GBA has indirectly endorsed the process followed by the government. 8. Thereafter, it has been GBA which was in a hurry that the government notify the RP 2021. Now the noises being made about not inviting suggestions is all for entertainment. The vested interests in GBA have entertained the people all this while and have ensured that the real estate interests are protected. GBA is the biggest fraud on the people which has been kept alive by builder and mining interests after the scrapping of RP 2011. Goans should not complain now. They have indirectly endorsed the present RP 2021 and are not entitled to any scope for further suggestions as per the TCP Act which GBA has preserved. All this was done inspite of cautioning from time to time. -Soter

We celebrate this feast with great solemnity are't we? But do these words have any relevance in our lives? In the current socio-eco-political settings of Goa and Goan, I have this question to ask fellow Goans. What good will it be for a Goans if we gain the whole world (wealth, fame, foreign citizenship etc), yet loses our soul (Goa)? Let us take a pause and think if we can change our outlook for the sake of Goa and Gaon cause rather than just rock, sake and dance at every occasion. Cheers! Agnelo Pinheiro
[Goanet] The Itinerant Saint
ST.FRANCIS XAVIER: THE ITINERANT OF GOD Born in Navarre, Spain, on April 7, 1506, Francis Xavier from April 7, 1541, when he left Lisbon for India, till the day of his death, December 3, 1552, travelled by sea 38,000 miles, a few thousand by land, during 11 years: 1. Lisbon to Goa, April 7, 1541...10,000 miles--8 months; 2. Goa to Cape Comorin, Sept.20, 1542...600 miles--1 week; 3. Tuticorin to Goa, Dec., 1543...700 miles--1 week; 4. Goa to Cochin...500 miles--1 week; 5. Goa to Malaca, Aug.1545...2,000 miles--1 month; 6. Malacca to Molucas, Jan 1, 1546...2,000 miles--6 weeks; 7. Moluccas to Malacca, Dec.1548...2,000 miles--6 weeks; 8. Malacca to India, Jan 1548...2,000 miles--1 month; 9. Cochin to Goa and Bassein, Feb., 1548...700 miles--1 week; 10. Goa to Cochin, Sept.4, 1548...600 miles--1 week; 11. Cochin to Goa, Nov., 1548...600 miles--1 week; 12. Goa to Cochin, Dec, 1548...600 miles--1 week; 13. Malacca to Japan, June 24, 1549...3,000 miles--3 months; 17. Japan to Malacca, Nov., 1551...3,000 miles--2 months; 18. Malacca to S.India, Jan, 1551...2,000 miles--1 month; 19. Cochin to Goa, Feb, 1552...600 miles--1 week; 20. Goa to Malacca, April, 1552...2,600 miles--6 weeks; 21. Malacca to Sanchian, Aug., 1552...1,500 miles--6 weeks. About 38,000 miles and 25 months as actual distance and time travelled by Francis Xavier during the eleven years between the start of his missionary journeys at Lisbon in 1541 and its conclusion at Sancian (China) in 1552. Francis was a bad sailor, sea travel meant suffering in those days. May the Saint teach us all to live for others! Regards. Fr.Ivo
Re: [Goanet] Exploding the myths on Goanet
I always like a genuine argument based on facts and honest disagreement, which does not involve bogus insinuations and fabricated narratives that are repeated over and over again. Unfortunately, the post appended below is not an example of a genuine intellectually honest argument. It is a clear example of a spurious ideological smear piece, of the type that I and others have spoken out against. Please note that as is the case quite often this bogus propaganda is being carried out by the administrator of Goanet, himself. As usual, it involves blatant falsification of the facts that I have stated, and fabrication of a purely self-serving ideological narrative, complete with hackneyed straw men, red herrings and insinuations. An example of outright falsification of the facts that were presented in the video I had provided is the following claim: The Swedish video is an interesting one, but I couldn't help notice that it talks about the economy -- and not about what Helekar labels scientific progress or modern scientific medicine. Admin Noronha The above claim is dishonest and bogus because any objective person who watches the video will note that the graph shown is not just about the economy. On the Y-axis life expectancy of human beings in years is presented. Any scientifically literate person knows that life expectancy is a good measure of progress in medicine and health care. It is also well known that economic development, as indicated by increase in per capita income (shown on the X-axis) over the last 200 years is because of scientific and technological progress. Indeed, Prof. Hans Rosling in the video explicitly mentions industrial revolution and technological advancement as causes of the rapid rise in income. Two examples of outright fabrication of a bogus narrative as well as dishonest insinuation, that have nothing to do with facts presented, are the following: QUOTE By simply reducing a lengthier web address to a tiny-url and embedding Goanet's name in it does not make the debate any more relevant to the wider issues (including, a critique of corporatised science and its implications) often discussed on Goanet. UNQUOTE Admin Noronha QUOTE Goanet has also been used by people with an undying faith in a science-can-do-no-wrong ideology, and their own ideology is tasteless, colourless and odorless enough to them and therefore implies a lack of ideology. Or by those who believe that taunting individuals with a particular point of view is the best way to diminish scientific illiteracy and take rationalism forward. UNQUOTE .Admin Noronha Regarding the first quote, please ask yourself: Why would anybody want to make a big deal of the simple fact that a tiny url was used for convenience of the readers? Why would any person, let alone a Goanet administrator, want to use this insinuation to malign a contributor to a public forum? Any reasonable moderator/administrator of an internet forum would have welcomed such a practice because the readers are better served by it. Regarding the second quote, besides being another clear demonstration of Admin Noronha's habit of gratuitously smearing others with bogus insinuations and innuendo, it is also the recycling of a political canard (with buzz words and dog whistles of his own political ideology) that has been discredited several times before by me and others, including the late Cornel Da Costa and George Pinto. Examples of these tools of political propaganda are meaningless word salads such as science-can-do-no-wrong ideology and corporatised science. Instead of wasting time on them again, let me point to the following earlier posts and pertinent quotes of mine, in which I have shown how bogus and disingenuous these charges are: http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg13779.html QUOTE Not a single sentence he (Admin Noronha) has ever written on Goanet about science or my attitude towards it is true. He simply makes up things about both and puts those words in my mouth. So as usual, his claim that I believe science can do no wrong is pure garbage. Those who have understood what I have written over the years know that I have always maintained that science is simply a method of thinking critically and evaluating the truth of any proposition based on objective evidence. A scientist has no illusions about being righteous or knowing the absolute truth, whatever the heck that may be. As I have said time and again, s/he merely tries to seek the best rational explanation for the natural world based on observation - an explanation that has predictive power and practical significance. Far from claiming to be infallible, science thrives on falsification of hypotheses. It is every young scientist's dream to improve upon or overthrow a previously held best scientific explanation. Just to let you all know that I got back safely landing at Gatwick this evening. Thompson's must have felt the pinch of paying for our stay at Dona Sylvia Beach Resort in South Goa, so sent a special plane from Manchester to pick us up. I had hoped to enjoy the luxury of this resort for another day especially since my evening was made yesterday, when I Just couldn't resist joining our famed Emeliano Da Cruz and his trio in singing some old favourites at his request. Was glad to meet this great Goan for the first time too, as also FN and many other talented Goans at their Thursday Book Club. So many memories to cherish in so fleeting a break. [Goanet] International Conference on Catholicism in the World of Science
International Conference on Catholicism in the World of Science There has been always an osmosis between Science and Christianity. Scientist like Alfred North Whitehead and Paul Davies state that modern science is a gift of Christianity to the World. Jaki-Duhem thesis argues that Christianity was necessary for the rise of modern science. Besides these positive voices, there are significantly large number of scholars who think that Christianity hiders the development of Science and hence, support a conflict model between Science and Christianity. The conflict model draws a lot of attention but fails to consider all the complexities of the relationship between Science and Christianity. Some make a peace offer through a non-interactive model beautifully exemplified by Michael Faraday who said ‘ when I open by oratory I close my laboratory’. Thanks to developments in Science and Christianity, one can notice a great atmosphere of openness between the two. The twentieth century physics brought about a kind of humbling of science as a result it became open to Christianity. This openness was based on the developments in Science itself. Theories like Special and General Relativity , Quantum Physics, M-theory, Chaos theory have built a firm belief that there can be a conversation between Science and Christianity. Similarly, the developments within Christianity have reinforced this conversation. The Second Vatican Council, opening of the case of Galileo by Pope John Paul II, Pope’s John Paul’s letter to the scientists, etc., have opened a new corridor of dialogue with Science within Christianity. The church is Goa joins the dynamic conversation with Science as the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol celebrates its fourth centenary. This great temple of learning, that served as a meeting ground of East and West Continues its noble mission of mediation as it organizes an international conference on the theme ‘ Catholicism in the world of Science’ in collaboration with Pontifical Council for Culture, Vatican, Rome, Division of Humanities, St. John University, New York and the Indian Institute of Science and Religion, Pune from 17th to 20th Dec. 2010 at the Patriarchal Seminary in Rachol to mark its fourth centenary. The Archbishop Patriarch, his Grace Filipe Neri Ferrao will solemnly inaugurate the seminar and deliver the inaugural address. Dr. Job Kozhamthadam, the director of Indian, Institute of Science and Religion and the president of the Jnana-deeepa Vidyapeeth will give the key note address and the message of Archbishop Ravazi, the secretary of the Pontifical Council for culture will be read in the inaugural session. The delegates will be addressed by several illustrious speakers of both national as well as international repute who have expertise in their respective fields of research. The dialogue of contemporary cosmology with catholic theology of creation would be addressed by Dr. Victor Ferrao of the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol. The debate on Darwinism and Catholic anthropology will be taken by Dr. Craig Baron of St. John’s University New York. Creation, Evolution and Intelligent Design debate will be taken up by Dr. Tomasz of the Pontifical Council, Vatican, Rome. The Debate around the Neuroscience, and the Human Soul, will be tackled by Dr. Augustine Pamplany from Little Flower Seminary, Alwaye, Kerala. The Galileo episode will be dealt by the Galileo expert Dr. Mathew Chandrankunnel of the Dharmaram Vidya Kshetra, Bangaloru. The fate of the universe and humanity will be discussed from the point of view of science and theology by Dr. Kuruvilla from Jnana-deepa Vidyapeeth. Along with the above issues of faith, the conference will take up some vital issues of morals. Dr. May A Webber from St. John University New York, will discuss the morality of cloning and stem cell research and Dr. Sarita Nazareth of Goa University will present the moral issues centered around Genetic Engineering. Dr. Asrid Lobo , from Tata Memorial Hospital will strive to take up the moral issues emerging from tissues banking, oncology and human fertility. Dr. Bazilio Monteiro, from St. John’s University, New York will take up the debate on the metaphysics of the models of development. The other papers promise to consider the nuances of the Science and Catholicism dialogue and draw the direction its future engagement. Dr. Keith Desouza will study how hermeneutics is the meeting ground between science and catholic faith. Dr. Theodore Mascarenhas sfx, from the Pontifical Council, Vatican, Rome will take up the teachings of the Church on Science and technology. Dr. Chae Young Kim, Sogang University Korea will take up the prospects of theological appropriation of the findings of science while Dr. Gennaro Auletta, of the Gregorian University, Rome will takes the theological appropriation of quantum physics. Dr. Allan Tavares, sfx, will take up

[Goanet] SANCTITY OF OLD GOA CHURCHES DEFILED -ASI
Good to highlight issues as Godfrey did. Rather than just do that, concrete solutions are the need of the hour. Workable solutions instead of plain criticism are what Goa needs today. With such a huge number of people converging at Old Goa with no proper supporting infrastructure, things are bound to go awry. Let us not wait for another twelve months. Target the responsible authorities directly: not via the press or Goanet, and work towards achieving the desired change by supporting them, not attacking them. They need help!

[Goanet] VASCO'S FAMILY- Portuguese blood, Indian roots
Vasant Baliga: There is a very fine line between Desh Premis and Desh Drohis-One person's Desh Premi is another person's Desh Drohi as can be seen in the case of Arundhati Roy-a sizable coalition comprising the so called white wine drinking intelligentsia, Maoists,Nihilists and Separatists consider her a Desh Premi and many others a Desh Drohi-the vast majority feel that she should be allowed to rant and rave and is best ignored. Response: May I request Vasant to provide the source/ statistics of his conclusions on Arundhati Roy or are these his personal perceptions? Please clarify. Vasant Baliga: Arundhati has now been booked on directions of a Delhi court for sedition against the Republic of India for saying that Kashmir is not an integral part of India.Lets see how the case progresses for it is very pertinent to many Goans and their views on Goa being part of the Republic of India. In my view a Desh Premi is one who loves his Desh and a Desh Drohi the opposite. Response: In which basket does Vasant place the RSS, VHP, Shiv Sena, HJS, Sanathan Sanstha, Bajrang Dal - the Desh Premi or Desh Drohi? Please also give reasons why. Regards, Marshall

[Goanet] Just imagine...Rains in Goa on 3rd December!
Sorry FN, Do not mistaken it for a joke. Its a warning. The so called Hindu Gods are always depicted with weapon/s in one hand (or more), which believers understand and fear of. But only few notice a warning device in the other hand: Concha of Vishnu or Damaru of Shiva. Mythologically (or philosophically), the manner in which they are sounded, is supposed to communicate the degree of anger or acceptance of what the earthly persons do. And yes FN you have sensed the rape, but if a person of your calibre does not know whom to blame, God help the mankind. It is easy to say: we all share the blame, which is sadly though is the essence. But it is also an excuse to say that I am too small to get rid of it and usurp an excuse to do nothing. What is important is what each one of us can contribute or even attempt to weed out at least one of the thosand evils. When there is a problem, Japanese management practice prescribes something called Fish Bone Analysis as the first step: Brainstorm the thousands of causes, attribute weightages and then arrange them in the order of importance. It was statisically found that top 6 causes contribute 88% (Toyota experience 93%) of the problem. It then becomes easy to plan a solution (+2 to 3 backup solutions) and the modalities of implementing the soluions. Instead of going blah..blah all the time, can we atleast try to identify the main causes of the rape of nature as the first step? I offer to be a part of such an effort. Rains on 3rd December. is it not telling us that we must do something differently? Rajendra In response to Fredrick's lament: it drizzling (lightly though) on the evening of December 3 in Goa. This is a bit much. Even nature should have a limit to the jokes it deems to put us through. But then, giving the manner in which the human race has been raping nature, whom can we blame? FN
[Goanet] MINISTER VIOLATING THE LAW
It is extremely distressing that the High Court had to intervene to rescue a 70 year old whose access to his abode at Dona Paula was being blocked by our Health Minister Mr.Vishwajit Rane. If one stoops so low for a mere piece of land one wonders what vicious battles and wars would be waged to assume power and authority. I am sure when he turns 70 himself, Vishwajit Rane would not like to be bullied by a kid. But what you sow, you shall reap Mr. Health Minister. Ministers flouting the law with impunity reflects the lawlessness in the state. Officers who comply with the illegal dictats of those in power are equally responsible for abetting these illegalities. Their salaries are paid for by the people of Goa and they should have the spine to refuse complying the illegal orders of their political masters. And that the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane is himself residing in a bungalow that is allegedly illegal as it does not even have an occupancy certificate is something very serious. So the police security given to him as a Minister is to protect an illegal structure. Does this augur well for Goa when even Bihar is moving ahead from lawlessness? Re: [Goanet] GBA's 4th Anniversary of Miners and builders Interests
The Goa Su-Raj Party nor the Goa Environmental Action Group lead by their respective General Secretary Shri. Floriano Lobo has never been a part of GBA even from the very beginning, though these two organizations did hugely support its initiative from the background. These two organizations have been silent observers of what was happening vis a vis GBA brass and the Government of Digamber Kamat. The indication of what was to come was given in the 'Draft Regional Plan' when Dr. Oscar Rebello, GBA's original convenor, had endorsed it with the Margao based builder's suggestion that accommodation for the migrant workers in Goa should be built to house them This clearly showed the builder/GBA nexus. Therefore, that GBA's mandate had to fail and the people of Goa be taken for a jolly good ride was evident. We believe that Soter is making a lot of sense when he says what he says, especially that GBA couldn't use its clout to negate and remove the controversial amendments to section 16 16A of the TCP Act which is a arrogant move by the powers that be to tell the people 'you do want you want - but we shall do what we want'. Therein lies the total and absolute failure of the GBA. What is happening now within the precincts of the GBA is a face saving activity, nothing less, nothing more. The GBA, specifically Sabina Martins who is leading it, is required to scrutinize each and every 'who is who' in the GBA, check their antecedents, and the rotten apples (which are aplenty ) be shown the door OR say RIP once and for all and be done with it, sooner the better, so that the 'PPS' movement which is waiting on the sideline be recognized for what it is and be given an even bigger boost that will overshadow the Azad Maidan's gathering of 18 December 2006. If at all the government has suceeded in bull dozing its own understanding about particiapatory planning, it is definitely GBA that must carry the blame for the betrayal of the people for the following reasons; GBA is the biggest fraud on the people which has been kept alive by builder and mining interests after the scrapping of RP 2011. Goans should not complain now. They have indirectly endorsed the present RP 2021 and are not entitled to any scope for further suggestions as per the TCP Act which GBA has preserved. All this was done inspite of cautioning from time to time. -Soter
[Goanet] Is the GoaNet digest auto-modifying some words?
Dears, I received an interesting G-chat message a couple of minutes ago - asking whether I was making a double typo or whether I was linguistically challenged wrt certain words. So I checked and thought I'd ask the question of those in the know. QUESTION: Is there any particular reason i.e. Is there some 'frakness' in the GoaNet software which causes words to be modified at least when transmitted in digest format? [Goanet] Fwd: Churchill’s note unlikely to a id Raheja’s plans for Carmona project
http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Churchill-rsquo-s-note-unlikely-to-aid-Raheja-rsquo-s-plans-for-Carmona-project/43485.html Churchill’s note unlikely to aid Raheja’s plans for Carmona project HERALD REPORTER Churchill’s note unlikely to aid Raheja’s plans for Carmona project ...TCP wants road widening first HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, DEC 3 PWD Minister Churchill Alemao’s official note to acquire land for widening of the existing road to 10 meters may not be of any help to Mumbai-based real estate developer Ms K Raheja Universal Ltd to obtain construction license for construction of bungalows in Carmona village till the land in question is acquired and the road developed. For, the Town and Country Planning department has again categorically maintained as in the past that any secondary development on the land owned by the Mumbai-based developer would be permitted only after “acquiring” and “development” of the road of 10 meters and shall be governed as per rules in force. This question has assumed significance given the real estate developer had replied to the TCP citing the note put up by the PWD Minister towards acquisition of the land for road widening. When contacted, Town Planner, Margao Rajesh Naik said his office is in receipt of the letter-cum-reply from the developer and the file is being processed as per rules. He, however, replied in the negative when asked whether there exists any mandatory 10-meter road from the main road to the property. And, the Town Planner agreed that one of the conditions that Raheja will have to fulfill is the acquisition and development of a road of 10 meters to the property. “The file is being processed. Appropriate decision will be taken as per the rules and conditions”, he added. The TCP had earlier issued NOC for sub-division of plots to K Rahejas Universal amongst other conditions that any secondary development will be permitted only after the acquisition and development of road of 10 meters. Incidentally, PWD Minister Churchill Alemao had put up a note on November 30, 2009 issuing directions to the PWD, Executive Engineer to immediately take up land acquisition for widening of the road to 10 meters right up to Raheja property on grounds that the residents of the locality face hardships due to inadequate motorable access to reach their destination, especially during the monsoon. Based on Alemao’s note, the Town and Country Planning had issued the NOC for sub-divisional of plots, but on conditions that any secondary development would be permitted only after the acquisition and development of the approach road to 10 meters. -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. Re: [Goanet] Goa Inquistion
Hi Frederick, Being the weekend, I followed your advice in the Jan Huyghen van Linschoten thread. While not computer savvy, I checked edits and references in the Wiki article on the Goa Inquisition. Clicking some references, led me to web-articles written in the 21st century. These web-articles were general reviews with NO REFERENCES to the writings of the period or real-time accounts (16th /17th / 18th century historians). Hence the references in the Wiki article converted someones' off-the-cuff ramblings and opinions into historical facts. This includes writings of French philosopher Voltaire about Goa's history. (Venantius and others please note) In the Goa inquisition write-up in Wiki, there is the account on suppression of Konkani in seminaries and liturgy. I do not understand how this becomes part of Goa Inquisition. So too, is the account of Synod of Diamper in 1599. This synod related to the mutual relations and workings of the Roman Church and Syrian-Orthodox Church in India. How does this become part of Goa Inquisition? Were measures like these passed by / through the office of the inquisition? Are the author(s) of the Wiki article (like many others) confusing the Goa Inquisition with the history of Goa during the Inquisition period? And, they are doing a poor accounting of both topics. I am unaware of the author of Goa Inquisition article in Wiki. That is good. As an avid history reader, I have to give the writing poor grades. It is a 'LAZY HISTORIAN' writings relating to the Inquisition any-and-all stipulations (laws, rules and regulations) in 16-17-18 century Goa. Instead of relating and analyzing the stipulations to the military-political-social-economic changes and challenges in Goa at that specific period in time. Some of the social changes in this period (for a variety of reasons, starting with the Dutch blockade in 1603 and again in 1636-1639) was the transition of Golden Goa (Goa Dourado) to an economically stagnant Goa. This led to significant out-migration of Goans (Firangis and Mesticios) to Portugal and Brazil where gold was discovered. This vacuum in Goa led to Indians to come to Goa as unwelcome immigrants. It is immigrants of this time (17th / 18th century) who are the forebears of most of today's Goans - Hindus and Catholics. Many of the laws are to contain this uncontrolled and unwelcome migration; akin to the current laws enacted in various states across America to stem Mexican immigration. Finally, I am surprised Goan historians have not addressed the Wiki article. Usually they are fairly obsessive (a.k.a. anal retentive) to specifics about semantics; having conclusions and opinions supported by facts; (as in the controversy about Invention of Goa). Yet in the Wiki article, many statements of facts are permitted to stand without data and evidence to back-up and explain the accounts. The only hard data is the number of individuals subject to capital punishment from 1561 to 1774; with no mention of their demographics and crimes they committed or are accused of committing. Please feel free to forward these comments to Wiki office; especially now that they have one in India. Regards, Gilbert Lawrence
