[Goanet] Press Note (TAG) - "Meet the Artiste"
*Press Note* *For Favour of Publication* * * *Meet the Artiste* *Sabina Fernandes* The monthly programme, *“Meet the Artiste”* organized by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) will be held on Tuesday 28th December 2010 at 4:30 pm at TAGs Conference Hall, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim. The tiatr artiste of this month is Sabina Fernandes. During her studies as a child her favourite hobbies were music, dance and drama. In the year 1960 she had an opportunity to play a major role in an English Play entitled *“Scattered Feathers”*. In this play she acted so well that she got appreciation for her role from numerous people. It was in this show that Master Vaz, the famed tiatrist of that time spotted her and offered her an important role in his tiatr *“Bapui”*. It was her acting in * “Bapui”* which changed her life totally and she became one of the most popular actresses of the tiatr stage. Although Sabina has acted in many tiatrs and impressed the audience with her acting abilities, she will be remembered by tiatr goers all over, for her 2 memorable roles, (a) in John Claro’s *“Portuguez Kolvont”* and (b) Aristides’ *“Divors”*. In *“Portugues Kolvont”* she was at her best and contributed her acting in making the tiatr very successful. Infact this tiatr had a run of over 100 shows which was a record at that time. In the tiatr *“Divors”* too she won the hearts of the audience with her acting abilities. This tiatr too had a successful run of more than 100 shows. Her acting in these two tiatrs impressed the tiatr audience and Sabina established herself as one of the most sought actress of tiatr stage. Sabina is also a very good singer and has sung numerous songs particularly duets throughout her carrier with different singers of tiatr stage. However, her duets with her late husband Greg de Candolim were very popular among the tiatr audience. Greg-Sabina duets, which were witty and full of comedy, will always be remembered by the tiatr fraternity. Sabina has also acted in films. Her role in the film *“Mhoji Ghorcarn”* was very impressive. Sabina, the most sought actress of that time, has the credit of acting in tiatrs directed by almost all topmost directors of that time. She has acted in the tiatrs written and directed by C. Alvares, M. Boyer, Alfred Rose, Remmie Colaco, Jacint Vaz, Kid Boxer, Saib Rocha, Prem Kumar, Master Vaz, Nelson Afonso, Aristedis Dias, Mike Mehta, John Claro, Roam Tony, Tony Sax, Wilmix, Mendes Bros, Valent Mascarenhas, etc. She along with her husband late Greg de Candolim produced and directed 7 tiatrs. Some of the tiatrs written and directed by them are *“Ximiritint Sacrament”*, *“Mhozo Titi”*, *“Gõycho Sadu”*, *“Avoichim Dukam”*. She also produced audio cassette and lent voice to several audio and video albums. She has acted in over three thousand tiatrs all over Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Karnataka and Gulf Countries including United Kingdom. She has won numerous awards including Goa State Cultural Award presented by the Government of Goa. All tiatr lovers are requested to attend the function. * * * * *Victor de Sa* Member Secretary

[Goanet] There is no drug mafia in Goa: Ravi (Herald)
There is no drug mafia in Goa: Ravi HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, DEC 21 Snubbing allegations of Goa being major hub for narcotics, Home Minister Ravi Naik today claimed that ‘there is no drug mafia in the State.’ Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a new barrack for Goa Reserve Police at Altinho, Naik said that the State has been cleansed of narcotics. “I don’t agree there is drug mafia in Goa. One can take a walk along Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and other places. You will not find the existence of drugs anywhere here,” he said in the presence of Director General of Police Bhim Sain Bassi. The minister claimed to have personally patrolled the coastal stretch along with police officers to crack down on drugs trade. “We have intensified our anti-drugs operation in the coastline. We are personally ensuring that narcotics trade does not exist here,” he stated. DGP asserted that stern action by the police has effectively broken the backbone of the illicit trade in Goa. “We don’t allow the use of drugs. Goa police has taken effective action even on smaller drugs trade. This has made it difficult to drug pushers to operate along the coastal belt. We have come down heavily even on smoking (drugs smoking),” he said. The department claims that the coastal stretch is now safe for locals, as many avoided visiting these places because of alleged notorious activities. DGP also maintained that amplified music is stopped by 10pm. http://oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/There-is-no-drug-mafia-in-Goa-Ravi/44029.html

[Goanet] Goans losing jobs in 1961
I wonder if there was any inquiry to the Goans losing jobs in 1961. Many left the shores to conduct new lives. Others stayed, continued and found new ways of living. I wonder if there was any inquiry conducted via an independent commission against this atrocity against Goans? What was the MGP thinking then? BC
[Goanet] SVM gheraos GIDC chairman on Tuesday evening
The Sez Virodhi Manch members gheraoed the GIDC Chairman, Mr. Babu Kavlekar at 5.30 p.m today and submitted a memorandum with six demands. Primary demand being resignation of all members instrumental in he allotment of lands for SEZ’s and accountability. The GIDC Chairman was left dumbfounded and repeatedly stated that the matter is under study and that a legal opinion has been sought. The SVM members were interested to know whether the matter under study were actually the figures of kickbacks that would come to the Board of Directors in the fresh allotment of lands as the lands have been reverted back to the GIDC by the Court. The SVM members informed Mr. Kavlekar that people of Goa and SVM would not be at rest until the fraud in allotment of lands for SEZ’s is investigated and the persons involved in the fraud bought to justice by law. To Mr. Chandrakant Kavlekar, Chairman, GIDC – Goa. Sub: Memorandum of Demand of SVM Sir, The Bombay High Court has quashed the allotments made for SEZs in the judgment on 26/11/2010. The H’ble Bombay High Court has clearly held in the Judgment that “the power of GIDC under clause (a) of Section 14 of the Transfer of lands vesting in GIDC can be exercised only with a view to ensure establishment, growth and development of Industries. (pg158). “It can be safely concluded that there was no direction issued by State Govt. under section 16 of GIDC act to allot any land for the purposes of setting up SEZs. (pg156). “The lands which are available at the disposal of the GIDC are public properties and therefore, the GIDC is under an obligation to sell or transfer the lands by acting fairly” (pg148). “In view of law laid down by Apex Court, The GIDC cannot arbitrarily allot lands vested in it and the alienations made by the GIDC must stand the test of reasonableness”. The allotment of the public properties vested in the GIDC can be made only in a fair and transparent manner and that also in public interest. (Pg. 154). There is no transparency in the allotment of lands by GIDC. There is a complete arbitrariness in the allotment of lands by GIDC. (Pg173). Instead of owning up the responsibility for causing losses to the public exchequer to the tune of over Rs.100crores as per the Comptroller Attorney General report for 2008-09, you have been making irresponsible statements in the media. The people of Goa will not silently suffer your illegal and immoral acts in allotting the Lands for SEZ when no SEZ policy existed in the State at that time and more importantly in utter violation of law as observed in the judgement. We, the members of the Sez Virodhi Manch demand: 1. The immediate resignations of yourself from the post of Chairman of GIDC; and of Mr Aleixo Sequeira, (present Power Minister), Mr Nitin Kunkolienkar (ex President GCCI),A. V. Palekar (ex M. D.), Keshav Kamat from whatever capacity you or they may be performing today as you were instrumental in the illegal allotment of lands for SEZs and acts of omission and commission for the same. 2. We also demand a thorough departmental inquiry followed by stringent action against you and the others mentioned above, so that the GIDC can cleanse its tainted image in the eyes of the Goan citizens. 3. SVM demands that the lands allotted for SEZ’s should be reverted to the original owners or in the alternative, handed over to the Govt. to be utilized for community projects in accordance with the wishes of respective villages. 4. SVM demands that the GIDC immediately notify regulations under section 51 of the GIDC to specify mode or method of disposal of GIDC lands as the same do not exist till date. 5. SVM demands that the GIDC adequately advertise availability of Industrial plots in principles of transparency and with first preference given to entrepreneurs for self employment. 6. SVM further demands the GIDC request the State Govt. to hand over the jurisdiction of Industrial Estates to the Village Panchayats as the loss of jurisdiction has caused undue losses and violations with villagers facing the brunt due to illegalities in form of illegal bore wells, illegal constructions, violation of Construction regulations, etc. with local Panchayats having no control over their own lands. Governance of Industrial estates need to be vested to the local bodies. Failure to accept our demands will provoke an intense agitation in the coming New Year 2011. Dear Soter, When all fail, highest scorer even with 25% marks is the best student in a class and is the mascot of the class. ToI comments option may not be the best or may be even fail class. But it is so far the best option I have come across to understand the public pulse in Indian context. It is more user-friendly and has more people hits (700 comments each with average 70 votes makes it 5 hits). If Soter or anyone shows a better option I shall thank him. Secondly about TRUTH. I do not think that I know the truth in any matter. If any goanet contributor thinks that he knows the truth than he must be Gandhi, Buddha or Christ. Since I do not know the truth, for me the view of a larger group is the TRUTH till the time an even larger group says otherwise. I consider collective wisdom to be far superior than individual wisdom. In response to Soter’s comment: If for Rajendra kakodkar the 'Truth' is going to be determined by polls conducted by media houses set up by India's exploitative class then God save this country. [Goanet] Scholars call for continued dialogue between Science and Faith
Scholars call for continued dialogue between Science and Faith Published on: December 21, 2010 - 00:27 PONDA: Rev Dr Basilio Monteiro, ex-alumni of the Rachol Seminary, now a professor at St John’s University, New York, on Monday, on the concluding of the four-day conference on ‘Catholicism in the World of Science said that "There is a need for bold minds and bold ideas to face the tremendous challenges of the modern world." The international conference on Science and Faith held at the Rachol Seminary ended with the scholars calling for a continued dialogue between Science and Faith. Scholars were unanimous that Science and Faith have to work together for the betterment of humanity. Fr Monteiro called for an Indian response to the new challenges. Dr Chae Young Kim, a Protestant scholar from the Sogang University, Korea speaking on the occasion said that the "Religious Values in a Pluralistic Age" was all praise for the Catholic Church.’’ "I really admire your Catholic intellectual tradition," he said adding, "whether we like it or not, scientists and religious people are neighbours and we have to co-operate." The Catholic Church has understood this all along", he added. Dr Gennaro Auletta, from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, explained as to how research strategy is in transformation. Dr Auletta called upon the Church to draw up a method to promote both Science and Faith together. "India can give an impulse to the West in this direction", he said. At the closing ceremony at which Rev Dr Anthony Da Silva, SJ, Provincial of Goa was the chief guest, Dr Orla Hazra presented a report on the seminar. Seminarian Dylon Clive D’Costa proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Da Silva congratulated the Rachol Seminary for carrying on the intellectual apostolate started by the Jesuits in Goa. Fr Donato Rodrigues invoked God’s blessings to the delegates for the upcoming celebrations of Christmas and New Year. During the four days of the conference, delegates listened to well-presented lectures and participated in group discussions. According to the delegates, this conference was a ground breaking event. They hoped that the Rachol Seminary and the Archdiocese of Goa would organise more similar programmes. Sr Luiza, president of the Pilar Sisters, speaking about the conference, said, "the profound and the thought-provoking insights have deepened my understanding of the relationship between Religion and Science." Ms Maria Magdalena Almeida e Vales, a lay woman said that the conference was, "overwhelming, interesting, informative, enlightening and motivating." For her it was "an outcome of the grace of God for modern times driven by the power of the Holy Spirit." Fr Joseph Salema, Director of Pastoral Institute, admired the organisation of the seminar and expressed his happiness that this conference had put the Rachol Seminary on the world stage. Professor Kamladevi Kunkolienkar, PES College, Ponda said, "Definitely it was an eye-opening experience. We had new insights on various issues. Though the forum began from the Catholic point of view it embraced the points of view of other religions." Ms Rakhee Sharma, a postgraduate in bio-technology said "being a part of this conference was a fruitful and enlightening experience. I got an insight on the various disciplines of Science and its relationship to Religion. Science and Religion complete each other when they go hand in hand." http://www.navhindtimes.in/goa-news/scholars-call-continued-dialogue-between-science-and-faith

[Goanet] FINALLY A JUDGE GETS JUSTICE
Goa’s distinguished judge, Anuja Prabhudesai is finally being reinstated. Her suspension was unwarranted and a grave injustice. Since her appointment as a judge in 1991, Anuja Prabhudesai has displayed extremely high levels of dedication and integrity. Her character has remained unblemished during her entire tenure. With all her humility and gentleness she did not deserve to be treated so shabbily. The ruthless treatment meted out to Anuja Prabhudesai has put the entire judicial system to shame. With the callous suspension of Judge Anuja Prabhudesai it was established that the wheels of justice too can be manipulated. Unlike the Legislature and Executive which has gone to the dogs, the Judiciary has been till now left largely intact and we cannot allow the independence, sanctity and transparency of the Judiciary to be eroded. By merely reinstating the wrong done to her is not remedied. Rather, it is vital for the credibility of the judicial system that the conspirators in this most foul plot against her be exposed and punished. Those who framed fake charges against her should not be spared. It will only then reinstate the Aam Aadmi’s faith in a system that failed a very senior, intelligent and bright judge. [Goanet] Joint inspection confirmed illegalities at Devapan Mine
John Fernandes Quepem The Goa Pollution board along with water resources department , forest department, agriculture department and committee member of Cavrem Adivasi Bachao Samiti and villagers of Cavrem recently carried out a joint inspection of the Devapan Dongor mine Cavrem Quepem operated by Shaik Salim and Shaik Muktar. There were more than 200 villagers gathered along with officials to inspect the mine which started from 11 am in the morning and lasted till 3 PM in the evening without any break for lunch. At the time of inspection the team notice that inviolation of the inviornment clearence which has permited the mining acticvity upto the dept of about 120 mts below sea level but the mine owner has dug the pit upto the depth of about 167 mts below sea level. This has caused tremendous damage to the water resource. It was noticed by the directorate of mines and geology that no royalties have been paid to the governemtn since Jan 2010, till May 2010 even though the mine was in operation without there being legal consent to operate. This was confirmed by the inspecting team from visual inspection of the mine and the verbal confirmation from the directorete of mines representative. Top soil was not stored as per the environment clearance. one Water spring was totally destroyed and 2nd spring is heavily damaged. As per the EC 50 mts on both sides of the nullah should be mining free , and it was thickly vegetated with native forest trees. But the mine owners have completely buried and destroyed in total violation of environment clearance. The Indian bureau of mines did not attend the inspection but forwarded a letter stating that the mining company has violated the mining plan. The authorities were witness to large scale deforestation in private forest land, and the representatives stated that they had not encroached on land belonging to forest dept., but the team pointed out that deforestation in private forest is also contraventation of the forest conservation act. All the authorities observed that mining activities had been carried out in the previous week and that the screening plant had been operational in spite of high court orderand order from the Goa pollution control board. Photo annexed: Seen in the photo official of Goa Pollution control board, Mining department, Forest department and Agriculture deparment carring out the inspection of the Devapan mine at Cavrem

To Goanet - A couple of additional points that were not mentioned in the blog post (it is a photo blog, and I tend to steer clear of political issues there). - The Ribandar hill has become worse, if you can believe it! You can now see huge new monstrosities jutting out. - Examine picture 3 closely; it has much packed into it. The concrete ugliness merits no further comment. But look at the foreground river cruise boats about to embark on another crude and noisy sortie. What kind of uncouth people are these Indians who would come to a place like this and instead of enjoying the riverine scene in quietude, engage in the worst possible display of public boorishness? And what kind of coarse people are the Goan owners of these boats that facilitate the Indian louts? r

Does it mean that in 2010/2011, Goa has the best chance for alignment with Hindu politicians (i.e. Parrikar) or that It is in Goa's best interests to align with the BJP (i.e. LK and that lot)? or does it mean that Goans best get reconverted (purified) to Hinduism or become Hinduized (Swadeshi) Katlicks and be taught by way of VideoCDs? Why would any sensible and self respecting individual want to mix religion (which is a private relationship between a human being and his maker or atom - as some would contend) with politics (which is a public hera-pheri of all kinds of sorts)? On a personal note (and for the record) I do not want to see the return of the Apartheid caste system, the systematic and religiously sanctioned abuse of women courtesy the Devdasi nonsense, the sheer inhumanity and brutality of Sati and the Inquisition, or the religiously swept under the carpet abuse of children. Religion should stay out of public life. When mixed with politics, it only serves as an instrument for the suppression of 'others'. #2 is nonsense; never mind the short-term bravado of these loonies. jc
[Goanet] Stop honouring and celebrating with corrupt Goan politicians
The suggestions are excellent. But mere writing on Goanet or NT is not sufficient. A movement is needed to make politicians feel the pinch. A year ago Remo wanted to dump all 40 MLAs in the sea. But a fortnight later he invited Digu and other politicians to bless his concert in Margao. Too much talk and no action smells of cynicism. In our once-in 5-year electoral politics, politicians know that they can buy gullible voters with soro-chicken-dudu bonanza in just one fortnight and then mint money in the next 130 fortnights. These voters may not even know what goanet is. Rajendra In response to: Camilo Fernandes wrote: I fully agree and endorse that we should stop honouring our corrupt ministers. Goans had elected these politicians in good faith that they would be saving Goa from ruins but they have let us down by being traitors, destory and ruin Goa and are only hell bent in amassing wealth for themselves. Goans associations should never invite these corrupt and crooked politicians to grace their occasions. Arwin Mesquita wrote: http://www.navhindtimes.in/opinion/letters-editor-236 * * Stop Honouring Our Corrupt Ministers *I AM as guilty as many of my other Goan colleagues as I was part of associations celebrating Goa?s corrupt ministers. But I have come to my senses and hope that my fellow Goans would do the same as well. Goans are honouring Goan ministers in Canada, USA, Europe, Gulf, Goa etc and I really need to ask the question, Why? Are we honouring the very people who are responsible for the sorry state of affairs Goa is in today? It is these corrupt MLAs that are responsible for doing serious damage to Goa.

Dr. Ferdinando, You make a valid point and so does Santosh. Without Blaming or for better word "siding" either of you, how do you define Democracy, Freedom or Liberation (let alone Invasion). If Liberation is to make someone free, then spitting, vomiting, burning people alive, urinating et al is a form of liberation. That is why one see's people urinating on the shores of Calangute beach. The States have enough autonomy within themselves to operate like mini-republics. Goa's lack of internal governance is a result only of not having vision. For democracies to succeed an educated and thriving middle-class is imperative. I do not know what "Hindu politics" means and I certainly don't know why Goa should align with it. Did secularism become redundant in the Consitution of India while I was taking my afternoon nap? [Goanet] Tears for onions, cheers for 5-star infrastructure
People who look just below their feet are bound to crash into something they had not seen beyond. At last onions have reached Rs. 100 in some parts of Bangalore. Now those who cheer 5-star development must go to KFC and Taj for cheaper food, isn't it? Shameless Indians are now turning to Pakistan for onions. The worst is not yet over, it is to come. We must get rid of our fields for wide roads and cricket stadiums which will guarantee food security for the future, won't it? After all the car manufacturers have hit record sales for 2010 and we need not only NDA's Golden Quadrangle to accomodate the cars but we can now dream of UPA's Platinum Quadrangle to provide for the future cars to roll out. KFC and Domino's will feed this nation. Super malls and 5-star hotels and micro-industries will subsidise food for the masses. If that does not happen then probably renowned development experts like Charles, Dean and Brian or allopaths like Oscar will help goans get cheaper food. Journalist like Ashwin and Sanjay will also come to the rescue of goans from wherever they are by then. We are blessed the troika of Montek, Manmohan and Chidambaram to propell this nation into feeding on electronic chips from USA and UK. So let us get rid of our forests, fields, lakes and livestock to make way for our luxurious living. I just pray for a food scarcity and high costs. At least that may open our eyes just like it did to our ancestors in Goa that were forced to look out for agriculture lands to grow crops during the World War II food scarcity. Cheers without tears! -Soter

[Goanet] Christmas miracle for Goa
The government's order to airlines to keep fares within reasonable limits seems to have worked for one popular destination at least—Goa. For more than a decade, Goa's beaches have been a popular destination and enjoy peak tourist season during Christmas and New Year, with tickets often selling for a king's ransom—nothing less than Rs 10,000. But this Christmas weekend, a one-way ticket to Goa from Mumbai can be purchased for a relatively reasonable price of Rs 6,000 onwards even if a last-minute traveller books a ticket for December 24. Travel agents have expressed surprise at the price given the huge demand for tickets. "If you book a ticket for December 25, the fares are even cheaper, starting at Rs 3,500," said Rajesh Rateria, managing director, Cirrus Travels. The reason for this Christmas miracle, he says, is due to the fact that airlines have either increased passenger capacity or flights in that sector. These low fares won't last for long, and a one-way Goa-Mumbai ticket on January 1, 2011, is on the expensive side. The fares start from Rs 9,000 and go up to Rs 38,000 for January 1 and 2, said a citybased tour operator.

Re: [Goanet] IT IS TIME WE PROTECT WHAT IS LEFT OF GOA TO CONTINUE SAYING - PROUD TO BE A GOAN - FATHER OF GOA, PLEASE HELP - CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ON 49 YEAR OF INDEPENDANCE - AZAD GOA! - GOA VOITA
The likes of Santoshi Helekar are clueless to the situation of Goa. More than two decades ago I was told by one Sarojini who used to work for a large mining concern as to what was happening to Goa (open rape of mines etc). This person was an outsider. She called us Goans stupid and naive. 50 years on we still continue being stupid and naive. Recently one Falviano Dias a traitor who was behind the production of the dreaded BJP VCD condones the invasion of 61 by saying (Prudent Media discussion) that Goa had no electricity. I have travelled to Bombaim several times in the seventies and eighties by bus. Most of the villages along the way were dimlit (electricity) or used pontis. I am not to sure what this donkey Dias is trying to compare. Clearly Bombaim was fully electrified so were our cities in Goa. Regards BC
[Goanet] MUSIC: A spellbinding performance of Samba and Jazz (The Navhind Times)
A spellbinding performance of Samba and Jazz Published on: December 20, 2010 - 23:40 More in: iWATCH It was a home coming concert for Canadian jazz pianist and singer of Goan origin, Jacinta Luis. Jacinta teaches piano and voice at the prestigious Dawson College of music in Montreal, Canada. She also travels the world with her quartet comprising accomplished Canadian jazz artistes. At a concert at Goa Chitra in Benaulim, Jacinta performed along with saxophonist, Ashton Colaco, bassist Colin D'Cruz and drummer Lester Godinho. Goa seems to bring out the best in artistes from all over the world and for one with roots in this beautiful state, it was truly an ethereal experience as Jacinta gushed to a spellbound packed audience made up of connoisseurs from the field of music from across Goa. The concert began with Jacinta’s singing ‘Night and day’ which was deftly punctuated with brilliant contributions by each member of the band. Jacinta then featured her bass player Colin’s composition ‘Simple Samba’ in which she proved to be on par with the best of soloists in the world, with flying fingers that coaxed some complex piano lines out of Colin’s composition. Then came the song of the evening ‘Goa’, a lovely original by Jacinta set to an infectious samba beat again. The song spoke about beautiful Goa in English and then in Konkani. The rendition thrilled the crowd to bits. The first set ended with a jazz interpretation of ‘The last post’ dedicated to Goans in the armed forces. Back after a short break as promised, Jacinta launched into her act with renewed energy this time with ‘Malaika’ and ‘Pata Pata’ showcasing the Zambian phase of her life. She then performed two of her originals, a funky ‘Procrastination’ and a spunky ‘Feeling Good’ which actually made the audience feel good. Few more interesting interpretations of popular jazz standards like ‘Summertime’ and ‘Autumn leaves’ and then it was a jazzy Christmas time with some swinging interpretations of Christmas carols. The concert ended with Jacinta pulling off a surprise by inviting her dad Jerry Luis onstage. Jerry, an accomplished band leader in his days, harmonised with his talented daughter in an encore call for ‘Malaika’.
