The problem lies because no one is ready to throw their hands in the air and 
say 
that 19/12//61 was a mistake, and post 61 governance brought in is a utter 
failure. Democracy is a failure what are the other options? Instead one hears 
stories of Salazar and Salazar. One quirky bird has spent a part of her life 
writing about toilet issues pre 61. Can one imagine that a 'classy' restaurant 
can not even handle a booking and a simpleton just because he got a freebie 
makes a diehard defence. Only in Goa.

A spectre of pessimism is overtaking Goa these days. Actually, it has 
been hovering around for long, but is now reaching wider numbers and 
finding more takers more easily.

Every second expat, who comes down, quickly shifts to lamenting about 
the state of affairs in our State these days. They see dirt and garbage, 
they see corruption, and they see a loss of the old world charm that Goa 
supposedly once exuded.

While almost all posts in the Bomras thread are centred around discrimination, 
your posts are lost in tresspass, which is not an issue, even probably to 
Bomras' owner.  
 
Your (a) is misplaced: there are Consumer laws and obligations.
Your (b) is full of bias: Don't tell me you never noticed foreigners 
and Goan high class eating out at filthy gaddes, along with filthy rag pickers. 
That the gaddes or rag pickers are filthy does not mean they are inferior. Rag 
pickers have superior immunity (than foreigners, high class, you or me) to 
withstand the lower hygienic conditions. Gaddes offer superior taste with a 
niche of its own, which 5 stars cant. And your (and mine) hygienic status 
which we consider as high may be sub standard relative to some other person's 
standards. Can that person look down upon you as you did with gadde eaters? 
Your (c) defeats accepted systems: Tips are post service, depending upon

 Master cello player Alexander Mascarenhas's homecoming

After 43 years away from Goa, during which he never returned to his
ancestral land even once, master cello player Alexander Mascarenhas
will play a homecoming concert at Kala Academy on Friday, 7th January,
2011. The veteran musician spent his career  in prestigious orchestras
all over Germany. It is a family profession, he was trained by his
father, Espirito Santo Mascarenhas of Loutolim, and in turn trained
his son, Oliver, Mascarenhas who is also a professional cellist, and
will accompany his father on stage at the Kala Academy.

Alexander Mascarenhas was born in Loutolim in 1945, and studied music
under his father and the late Maestro Antonio Figueiredo. He attended
school at Don Bosco, followed by Dhempe College, and worked for a
while in Panjim (at the State Bank of India) before moving to Europe
in 1967 to study the cello on a scholarship from the German
government. He then devoted his career to performance and teaching
music in Germany. After 43 years, his return to Goa has been emotional
and unforgettable - he describes the Kala Academy as "great," and has
expressed gratitude to the government of Goa for supporting the
Panjim-based centre for the arts.

Oliver Mascarenhas was born in Germany in 1974, and was trained by his
father in music from a very young age. He is considered one of the
finest cello players of his generation, and has won numerous national
and international awards. At the age of just 22, he won his first
audition for principal cellist at the Hannover Radiophilharmonie
Orchestra, and has toured the world as a featured soloist with his
250-year-old instrument made by the legendary Italian luthier, Joseph
Gaffino.

Both Mascarenhases consider this trip to Goa, and this concert at the
Kala Academy, to be part of their profoundly meaningful musical
journey that connects Europe and Asia, Germany and Goa. They will play
several pieces written for cello by Beethoven, Ticciati, Rossini,
Boccherini and Offenbach. The young local musicians, Ingrid-Anne
Nazareth (piano) and Ashley Rego (violin) will support. The
performance will begin at 6.30 sharp at Black Box, it is free and
seating is first-come, first-served.

This concert is presented by Kala Academy Goa, the Indo-German
Educational and Cultural Society and Guitar Guild Goa (GGG).

Believe me or not, this is the first time  I even been to this  feast.
I never even seen inside of the church before

The village of Verem/Reis Magos has Catholic population less then 1000.
I am sure, this village had huge population many years ago.

Meenakshi Financial consultants constructing 66 flats and a swimming
pool in the village of Orlim approached the Supreme Court challenging
the order dated 7 th October 2010  which was in favour of the fabrica
da Igerja de Orlim



The Supreme court  on 4th Jan 2011 heard the case and upheld the High
Court order and the SLP  filed by Meenakshi was dismissed at the time
of admission itself and and has directed them to file a suit for
appropriate reliefs.


It maybe recalled that the High court order passed by Justice Britto
stated that there was no right of way from the Fabrica property to
that of the builders  .

Centre for Portuguese Language & Culture ( CPLC ) of the Smt. Parvatibai 
Chowgule College of Arts & Science, Margao in association with Instituto 
Camoes, Panjim announces commencement of Portuguese Language classes for 
Basic and Elementary levels in the College premises. Classes will begin 
from the week commencing Monday, 17th January, 2011. For each batch they 
will be held on separate alternate three days of the week between 6-00 
and 8-00 p.m.


Total duration will be around 80 hours of learning.

Examination will be conducted by Instituto Camoes in late April/early 
May, 2011 and certificates will be issued by it.

PANJIM, JAN 5
In a surprise development, Income Tax sleuths on Wednesday raided the office
and factory belonging to Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane.
The raids were conducted by the Karnataka circle of the I-T Department at
Karapur Agro Pvt Ltd office at Miramar and the factory at Karapur, Bicholim.
There was no information available on the raids.
The officials in the I-T Department in Panjim when contacted claimed they
had no knowledge about the raids.
On the other hand, attempts to contact Rane for his comments proved futile
while his office staff refused to make any comment.(H)

Comment:
I thought George would know why.
Digu bab's government has brought in untold prosperity to Frederick. Goa is 
now shinning. Guys are even striking gold, some will even walk over it on 
the pavements but it will not stink. Everything is subjective, depending on 
whose pockets are bulging. Come Manohar and everything will go wrong. After 
all we are in an age of "Intellectual Economy'.  The gold will shine or 
stink depending on who pays the highest price for intellectual property.

What is surprising about this? It is increasingly becoming clear that income
tax laws, instead of being a tool to shore up our economy, are being used to
browbeat political opponents. I am no fan of a Vishwajeet and his ploys in
politics, but is this the manner in which governments are to be kept in
power and the "people's mandate" (or politicians' opportunism) be coped
with?

It's like a Churchil Alemao, who once said, "When I'm out of the Congress,
I'm a smuggler, and when I'm part of it, I'm a good guy." Or words to that
effect.

It's not just the Congress which has been using IT raids (remember Babush --
when politically in/convenient, etc?) When the BJP was in power at New
Delhi, even the Rahejas, the major builders who own the Outlook magazine,
got raids on them. So did a local newspaper in Goa. It is time we all speak
out to reject the use of the law in carrot-and-stick ways. FN

The next day we made a day trip north to the town of Candolim. We’d heard it
was worth embarking on the hour-long drive for a slap-up feast at Bomras,
one of Goa’s finest restaurants — loved by locals and Mumbai weekenders, but
little-known among tourists.

It’s run by Bawmra Jap, a Burmese national trained in the UK, who serves up
world-class Burmese cooking in the shade of the palm trees in his pretty,
but unimposing, restaurant garden.

Paper lanterns and cane furniture give a pleasing feel of the Orient, but
the sleepy atmosphere and throwaway prices keep the tone decidedly Goan.

Glass Palace author Amitav Ghosh, who has a place nearby, says: ‘If this was
in New York, there would be a line along the block.’

COMMENT: Now that I have made, Bawmra Jap, a Burmese national, World
famous...there will be queues forming outside and prices will be going
heaven wards.
