-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM MARCH 15: A 52 year old lady was today escaped from a possible attack from a monkey at Vathadev Bicholim. According to the available information one Suman Manjrekar from Vathadev Bicholim was working in the kulagar when a monkey jumped from the tree and started chasing the woman. Sighting danger the woman started running but the monkey also followed her for more than 100 mts. Hearing shouts for help a person who was working close by pelted stones on the monkey who later fled on the tree. It may be recalled that similar case was reported in the village some days back when the monkey had chased another woman who was working in the kulagar. As per the reports the monkey is alone and runs after people especially if they are alone and has also damaged some crops in the area.

[Goanet] Can You Do It, MP Shantaram Naik ?
Can You Do It, MP Shantaram Naik ? Ever since the catastrophic annihilation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the "N" word, has been giving humanity the night mares. The word nuclear sends shivers down the spines of the educated; the illiterate are ignorant of its existence and won't be able to fathom the repercussion of a nuclear holocaust. Even then man has marched on in the field of nuclear or atomic feasibility, as a result of which a lot of good has come to mankind especially in the field of medicine and treatment for once most dreaded and untreatable diseases. It has also enhanced the power and the research sectors by leaps and bounds, all this is attained at a cost; a risk to humanity itself. Can any one forget Chernobyl, the disaster in Ukraine, in 1986 ? There have been several others in the US and other parts of the world over the years. In India we have witnessed what chemicals and gases like methyl isocyanate can do during the Union Carbide disaster in Bopal in 1984, which is just a mere miniscule exponent compared to the nuclear intensity. So, the whole wide world is seeking an answer to one question, should we risk the wellbeing of our civilization for scientific and civil benefits ? Is it really worth the risk ? In Goa MP Shantaram Naik of late seems like a man seeking redemption but unfortunately moving around in circles in the dark. He has raised an issue regarding the safety of the nuclear facility in Karnataka, which is in very close proximity with Goa and the other being the proposed nuclear facility in Maharashtra, again in very close proximity with Goa but on the opposite side and rightly fears for the worst in case of a nuclear meltdown as Goa will be sandwiched in between and nowhere to run. His concerns are appreciated but what I cannot understand is his asking for the safety standards of the two facilities, I am sure everyone will agree that the Japanese safety standards could well be one of the highest or the best, even far better than the US. But today we are witnesses to the fact that the best of safety standards do not withstand the fury and the force of nature. So if MP Shantaram is well and truly worried about the welfare of Goa and Goans try getting support for the closure of the one in operation or stop the other from being operational, nothing in between will and can save Goa and Goans in case of a nuclear meltdown. Secondly, nuclear as well as chemical contamination is spread mainly through air and water; these two are called "elements" in science along with fire. Lay siege to these two elements and civilization will cease to exist. In Goa rampant mining has laid siege to these to elements for monetary gains. People living in hinterland are the victims of this siege even after all the opposition; our government does not hear the cries for help. It would do a lot of good for MP Shantaram Naik to personally look into this matter where he will find a good number of his own fellow politicians and party men actually forcing a mining meltdown into the lungs and stomachs of Goans living in and along the entire mining zone, the mining meltdown may not be as devastating as a nuclear meltdown but it is devastating none the less. If MP Shantaram Naik is as keen as he shows to be, give justice to these people who are breathing, drinking and eating mining dust. Can you do it Mr. MP ? [Goanet] Dubai Black Money
If the Indian Government is really serious about addressing the issue of Black Money, can they investigate Indian Politicians using Dubai as a conversion hub of Black Money. There are Goan Ministers in particular who come to Dubai very frequently and have their agents who facilitiate their activities and publicise their visits. Surely there are enormous funds involved and I am sure this is an angle that is worth pursuing!! Arwin Mesquita, UAE. [Goanet] Holistic Medicine by Pandurang - Part 1
In his retirement from public life President Pandurang has decided to be an alternative public servant by doing all kinds of alternative things, like practicing alternative medicine, using alternative energy, writing alternative history, living an alternative lifestyle, and finding alternatives to science and reality. To do these things he has founded a multi-million paisa foundation called the Pandurang International Goan House. From inside the PIG House Pandurang wants to raise future generations of Pandurang International Goans. The first project taken in their hands by him and his fellow PIGs in this house is the practice and propaganda of Holistic Medicine. Pandurang can practice this medicine because it does not require a diploma, even from the postman. Simply he needs common sense and primary school Konkani-English dictionary. If you know a little bit of bhotponn or devosponn then very good. If your grandmother or mauxi taught you accurate science then better than that there is nothing. In fact, because of this cause Pandurang is qualified to teach holistic medicine to everybody by posting articles through Goanet, Huffington Post and Indian Postal Service. Posted articles are delivered very soon by highly qualified postmen with medical diplomas. In our next Part 2 circular, President Pandurang will describe Holistic Medicine means what, and teach you how to practice it. Yours faithfully, Forsu D. R. Dear Tucarama Naique/Tukaram Naik, I agree this post is hardly "constructive journalism". But the links are intriguing nonetheless. Do you know more about Sinha, and what advice he was offering Goa on SEZs? QUOTE Meanwhile, I got a letter from Manohar Parrikar, CM of Goa and I thought it would be great to work with an IIT graduate. So I went thereYes, he was very dynamic; but probably too dynamic. His problem was that he was the talati, tehsildar, collector, secretary, minister and the chief minister rolled in one. So very little actually got done. There were a lot of projects planned such as widening of highways, shifting the airport, housing projects, etc.; but very few decisions were taken. Moreover, while the State itself was the size of a large district, it had four government corporations dealing with industry; but very little industry to deal with! And then, everybody used sleep in the afternoon. I too had a lovely bungalow overlooking the sea and was getting into the habit of sleeping. [Goanet] ENSURE SAFETY OF KAIGA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT-SHANTARAM NAIK
Response to Mr Shantaraman Naik : Our Rajya Sabha nominate MP Mr Shantaraman Naik is very busy raising issues in Parliament and his question on Kaiga Nuclear Power safety issue may be right but he seems to be totally disconnect with larger safety issues of Goans effected by the mining projects. What about the people living with constant exposure to mining hazards from Assanora-Shrigoa-Bicholim,Sanquelim-Dabal-Panchwadi-Curchorem-Tilamol-Qupem? Is it any less than Nuclear radiation exposure? Are these not the Goans who he is representing in the parliament? Japan's tsunami is an eye opener to the entire world so easy to say. Have we forgotten the hidden dangers of mining in our own backyard in Canacona? Wake Mr Mr Shantaraman Naik and so also all the 40MLA's +2 MPs from the deep slumber to hard realities of mining effect in Goa. Your money will not buy you water and air which is God's free gift to mankind. Agnelo Pinheiro 7. ENSURE SAFETY OF KAIGA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT-SHANTARAM NAIK ** *FOR THE FAVOUR OF PUBLICATION* In a special mention made today in the Rajya Sabha, on tuesday Mr Shantaram Naik M.P. has demanded that government should plan out a strategy to protect Kaiga and other nuclear power plants in the country , in view of Japan experience. Mr Naik said that Nuclear Power Plants are established to meet power needs of the country but although Kaiga Nuclear Power Project , is close to Goa, the State has not been benefitted by it as, it has not been allotted any power from the plant and, on the contrary, has given the State constant nightmares, Mr Naik said. However, refering to Kaiga, Mr Naik said that reports say, that a study, by professor of environmental engineering at the Andhra University, Shivaji Rao, submitted to then chief minister Pratapsingh Rane, had estimated that evacuation of an area 2 to 5km around the reactor must be completed within six hours; within 12 hours for an area 5 to 25km away, within 24 hours for an area 25 to 75km away and within 48 hours for distances beyond 75km, as per the British accident scenario, based on a wind speed of 5 m/sec, rainfall of one millimeter per hour and neutral stability conditions. As far as Goa is concerned, areas up to Quepem and Chauri fall within 77km of Kaiga; while Panaji, Ponda and Bicholim are within 115km of the nuclear plant, Rao had stated. Japan?s tsunami is an eye opener to the entire world , Mr Naik said. It is learnt that there are two fast-acting independent and diverse shutdown systems at Kaiga and that, they have a safety measures committee which conducts a mock exercise every two years to check the preparedness of different departments in case of an emergency, Mr Naik said. ENGLISH!* by Adv.Radharao F.Gracias * * There has been a rise but no flow in the demand, for grants to English medium primary schools, in the State since the last quarter of century or more. Somehow the Governments seem determined, not to concede to the genuine demands, of the parents, without much reason. The refusal to provide grants for English medium schools, is based on false pedagogical premises that young children, must study in their mother tongue, to understand the subject. If this be so, there ought to be a rule mandating that children, must study only in the mother tongue. Marathi, admittedly is not the mother tongue of anyone in Goa although it is claimed, to be the language of religion and culture of a section of Goan Hindus. Children of these persons, are admitted to Marathi medium schools even though Marathi is not the mother tongue of the child. How is it that these children, for whom Marathi is as foreign as English, are not adversely affected by not studying in their mother tongue? The demand of parents is that grants should be released to all schools, irrespective of the medium of instruction. It is the parents who will decide, whether the child ought to study in English, Konkani or Marathi. The Government is bound to respect this inherent right of the parents. As school education goes now almost all students shift over to the English medium in class fifth. Do pedagogists say that it is in the interest of students to shift the medium a quarter of the way up? Will it not be ideal for students to learn in the same language from the beginning? Parents send their children to school for advancement of careers of the children and not for advancement of the language. I fail to understand how studying in Konkani till fourth class will help improve the language. It is much more logical to believe that a student studying Konkani as a compulsory subject up to Class Twelfth will have a better understanding of the language. Goa is the only State in the union where grants are released to all regional language schools, while there is no reciprocal arrangement, in the other States for the purpose of teaching Konkani. A regional language, is defined as the official language, of any State of the union. By that definition English qualifies as a regional language, since it is the official language of the State of Nagaland. On this count alone, English medium schools are entitled, for grants. Konkani, we shall continue to speak, whether we study it or not, being our mother tongue. The study of Portuguese language did not destroy Konkani neither has the study of English language, done so. If grants are released to English medium schools it would sound the death knell of Marathi, since not many parents will send their children to Marathi schools. Obviously, if no one studies Marathi, no one will know the language. Konkani will thus emerge, in a generation or two, the sole official language and the hurdle of Marathi, will be cleared once and for all. The Devnagiri protagonists who are opposing grants to English medium schools are at heart supporters of Marathi. Most of the Konkani writers in Goa have studied in Marathi and that does not exclude Pundalik Naik, Uday Bhembre, Damodar Mauzo, Datta Naik, N.Shivdas, Dilip Borkar and others. There is a feeling that these Marathi educated persons write in Konkani not so much because they love Konkani, but simply because, they stand no chance of gaining recognition, by writing in Marathi a language that is highly advanced and has a vast field of literature. Their loyalty to Marathi is understandable. After all, how can they be ungrateful to Marathi language, in which they have studied? And if they are ungrateful to Marathi, how can we trust them to be grateful, to Konkani which they have not studied? The Devnagiri protagonists write in Konkani at night, read Marathi papers in the morning and oppose Roman script in the evening. These elements are also opposed to Konkani in the Roman script, because a large number of writers in the Roman script would also compete for the Sahitya Academy Awards, thereby diminishing their chances. The creativity of the Konkani Tiatrists is well known, and many of them would easily corner the Sahitya Academy Awards, if not for the script barrier. These Devnagiri protagonists are therefore intrinsically Marathi wolves in Konkani garb. Konkani in the Roman script would have much greater acceptability, than Konkani in Devnagiri, has managed as of today. There are greater number of Konkani speaking people, in Karnataka and Kerala than in Goa who write either in Kannada or Malayalam script and are cut off from Konkani written in the Devnagri script. As against this, all Konkani speaking people in Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Mumbai and all over the world are perfectly at home in the Roman script having studied in English medium at higher levels. Hence Roman script can be the natural script for unifying
[Goanet] Panjim CCP Elections
On the Positive, I would like to appreciate the efforts of all those people and voters involved, in significantly reducing the potential winning margin of the Monserrate panel, at the recently held CCP elections. On the Negative, for those who have voted for the latter panel, I can also hold my head in disgust as how people with corrupt concience, no values and selfish motives have voted for known Anti-Goans and their associates; who not only have concretized a beautiful village but also have a major hand in the current rapid destruction of our beautiful state and our identity.Nevertheless the fight for Goa and its genuine issues must be carried on by True Goans!! [Goanet] CCP SHOULD NOT BE CONTROLLED BY THE MLA’S
That Panaji’s new Mayor and Deputy Mayor were selected at a meeting in Taleigao outside the jurisdiction of Corporation of City of Panaji is a very bad start by the new team. It is very important that the CCP get its independence and stops being remote controlled by MLA’s. The Mayor and the 29 Corporators should have full authority and be in control of the day to day administration at the CCP. They could of course seek advice and guidance of MLA’s, former MLA’s and former Corporators amongst others but the Corporators need to be in command. The Corporators should take the public into confidence in all they do rather than dancing to the tunes of MLA’s. Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372
[Goanet] SMILE...................... IT'S WEEKEND (17/03/2011)
HOW MUCH.. A major traffic jam on Zuari bridge in Goa was preventing people from moving forward. A motorist (Pidu) shouted out wanting to know what was happening. A guy (Cyril) from the front replied:- Cyril: Well at the traffic crossing Minister is sprawled across the road. He is refusing to move from there! Pidu: But why? Cyril: He has lost the elections and will now surely be convicted for corruption and will have to pay lakhs of Rupees as fines! Pidu: So that's his problem. Why we have to suffer? Cyril: He is threatening to douse himself with kerosene and set himself on fire if people didn't contribute with money to help him pay the fine!" Pidu: So how much has been collected so far? Cyril: Five litres kerosene! Cajetan de Sanvordem Kuwait.
[Goanet] Book reading :: Anna Karenina :: March 18, 2011 :: International Centre Goa :: 5-7 pm
'World of Books' Book Reading Workshop Leo Tolstoy Centenary Celebrations in Nov, 2010 made us revisit his works and we bring to you "ANNA KARENINA", which he called his first true novel An extremely engrossing read, this book tells the tale of one of the most enthralling love affairs in the history of literature. Penned while Tolstoy was wrestling with a religious crisis that nearly destroyed him, the book is filled with passion and soul-searching. Serialized in the Russian Herald from 1875?877 and published in its entirety in 1878, Anna Karenina was wildly popular and controversial. Yet Anna Karenina is a book that covers much more than one woman's misguided love affair. Tolstoy's broad canvas is big enough to include insight into happy marriages, adultery, sexuality, country life, politics, masculinity and femininity, individuality, conformity, altruism, love, death, longing and success. On nearly every one of its more than 800 pages is a sliver of Tolstoy's philosophy of life. Again and again, these small philosophical interludes resound with meaning that is as applicable today as it was more than a century ago. In all of literature, there are few novels that cover as much territory, or have stood the test of time so well. The literary workshop ‘Pleasure of Reading’ wants us all to look at our innate and compulsive love affair with story, as a species. It is the coming together of minds to brainstorm, meditate and explore the insights of the book, a true meaningful exercise. The workshop entails analysis, readings, movie excerpts and a PowerPoint presentation. Rendezvous @ICG "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy 18th Mar, 2011 from 5.00pm to 7.00pm The resource persons are Daniel Driscoll and Jugneeta Sudan _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ FN +91-832-2409490 or +91-9822122436 (after 2pm) _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/
