[Goanet] Govt Primary schools in Marathi
Government Primary Schools There are more than 800 Govt.schools spread over, the whole of Goa It is Govt. idea of providing Education to the poor and there is no different opinion about the responsibility of social dimension. With RTE to be enforced shortly these schools may be indispensable Most of the schools cater to Marathi Medium, and these unfortunate students and parents have no choice ,but take what they get The Govt. has abdicated its responsibility to promote more Konkani medium schools , since Konkani is the mother tongue and state`s official languag It is pertinent to know that the strength of the students is woefully low and they do not qualify to exist as per student to teacher ratio Even their most populated schools fall far below the normal requirement strictly insisted in private aided schools It is therefore reasoned to conclude that there is drain on resources, considering the infrastructure and human factor There is hardly any drinking or toilet facilities in these schools. It is more in the interest of the staff maintenance, as under similar circumstances in private aided schools , teachers are declared surplus and deployed where ever there is a vacancy. Many a times there are private schools in the vicinity , where these students could be conveniently enrolled in stead of incurring unwanted expenditure. These students could also be reimbursed all their expenditure. The single teacher norm is totally undesirable for conducive learning. The standard of teaching in these schools is to low. The supervision of work, attendance and monitoring is by remote control and not regular The arrangement to attach these schools to high schools in the neighborhood is not working satisfactorily due to lack of motivation. It is a said that the teachers teach by the sound and site of approaching Govt.jeep There are many teachers in these GOvt schools who are required to teach English as the subject in Std III and Std IV. Their proficiency is to be experienced and there is no attempt to recognise or provide in service training Hence Education in these many schools is a mere formality at a cost The nonviable schools lacking in student strength should be evaluated and closed The Govt is propping up teacher awards specifically to Govt Teachers to place them on par with Non Govt schools and that has not raised the standard or morale of these Govt schools attracting numbers

BACK TO... A Goan (Rico) and a Keralite (Gopalan) are seated next to each other on Konkan Railway from Goa to Mumbai. Gopalan asks Rico if he would like to play a fun game. Rico was tired, just wants to take a nap, so he politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. Gopalan persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. Gopalan: I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me Rs.100/= and then you ask me a question and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you Rs.5000/=. Rico agrees to the game. Gopalan asks the first question: Gopalan: What's the distance from the earth to the moon? Rico doesn't say a word, reaches into his purse, pulls out a Rs.100/= note, and hands it to Gopalan. Gopalan: Okay, now its your turn. Rico: What goes up a hill with three legs and comes back with four legs? Gopalan puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references ... no answer. Frustrated, finally Gopalan hands him Rs. 5000. Rico thanks him and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer (Gopalan), who is more than a little miffed, stirs Rico and asks: Gopalan: Well, what's the answer? Without a word, Rico reaches into his purse, hands to Gopalan Rs.100/=, and goes back to sleep. Cajetan de Sanvordem Kuwait.

[Goanet] London Global Goans Convention Brochure...
...badly put together; some of the Articles posted are woefully short on specificity. For instance Rabi Martins wrote about the formation of the G.O.A. in 1966, he then went on to write that he remembers well the early days when meetings were held in people's homes, dimly lit rooms and Pubs. This might well have taken place but I do not recall Rabi being present when the Association was founded in 1966. The East African Catholic Society formed by Camilo D'Souza (ex Uganda) and Amorito Nazareth (ex Tanzania) could arguable be the forerunners of the Goan Overseas Association. A meeting was called and 17 persons attended. A function room was hired at Caxton Hall, Westminster. It was at that meeting that an intention to form the Association took place. The Gentlemen who were prime in setting this up were Amorito Nazareth, Camilo D'Souza and Romeo D'Silva. Tony D'Costa and myself were present, amongst others. There was a Brass plate at the G.O.A. Clubhouse, which was put up to show that the East African Catholic Society installed the alarm system. On that plate Amorito Nazareth's and Camilo D'Souza's names were inscribed, the funds used were from the balance left in the Society's books. Rabi went on to write that he remembered well too, when the Association took possession of the prestigious Club and playing fields in Bromley, Kent. Actually it was Beckenham in Kent! Rabi continued to say the premises served the Community well until it was burnt down by some senseless thugs. The impression given was that we would have still been in possession of the Clubhouse and grounds...this is patently false. The present President took on the post conditionally i.e. that the Club house and grounds would be sold. The second article possibly written by Cip Fernandes who only became a member this year was full of time frame errors. It was in fact 1996 when the Bungalow was sold to pay the overdraft at the Bank of some 30k and to pay Jason D'Costa who was owed 20k and Lily Menezes who was owed 25k. Norton Antao was paid a year or two earlier. Having cleared the debts and paid all the bills there was a balance left when the handover to the next Committee was made. This Committee did not attend to the Clubhouse, I got numerous phone calls asking me to open up the Clubhouse on weekends. I had to inform the callers that I was no longer on board. Thereafter the situation got from bad to worse until the Clubhouse was burnt down. -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.

[Goanet] Hygiene, The Lost Treasure In Goa
Hygiene, The Lost Treasure In Goa We Goans love Fish, football and feni read a banner, that I still remember seeing during the inaugural Nerhu Cup in Goa, played for the first time on the newly constructed Fatorda Stadium. There is no doubt that majority of Goans just cannot do without our fish, football and feni, now with the price of fish, fast catching up with the price of gold, a lot of people who cannot afford have been forced to cheaper options which too are limited if not totally restricted. During my stay in Margao during my holidays, when my kids use to study it was my weekly routine to go to the wholesale fish market very early in the morning between 4:30 to 5:30 AM. There were a number of reasons for this routine that I use to religiously follow. I was the early bird right from my childhood so had the choice of worms too, at that time the market use to be less crowded, I just hate crowded places, the fish at that time is much fresher than later, variety of choice and good bargains and most of all less mess and stink around. I was told that with time, the heat and the stink get unbearable and the mess and water logging around is appalling. I dare not go late. Once unfortunately I landed in Goa during the rainy season and by George, what I saw made me sick to the pit of my stomach. I was on my bike the whole market submerged in ankle deep greasy dark water which was seeping into the fish baskets, there was cow dung, dog crap and the red smears of the paan on plastic and papers floating, stale fish and garbage scattered everywhere and moving in every direction, and still people waded through and bought the fish, it took me just a few seconds to turn my bike around and puke by the side of the road. Since then I have never ever gone to the wholesale fish market during the rains. During the normal season it not as bad but still very unpleasant and unhygienic. Today's article on the Herald about the appalling state of the wholesale fish market brought back the haunting memories. Fish is a major money spinner and more so in Goa, fish is also the basic ingredient of our meals, some even have it for breakfast and it is also fish that can affect most Goans if hygiene is not maintained in the markets. During the earlier days we had to do with the pathetic and appalling state of the fish market in the heart of the city and under the very nose of the Margao Municipality and now with the shifting of the fish market the sorry tale has not ended but become worse. When will our Authorities ever learn the dynamics of hygiene ? With the employment fish generates in Goa and the rate it's consumed, why do the Authorities not upgrade the fish markets and maintain the hygiene levels that should be maintained ? Like all else in Goa the most frequently visited sites and places are in dire states, public toilets, bus terminals, markets, government offices and even our airport, tells a sorry tale of the inefficiency and the apathy of our Authorities. Our Politicians frequently make jaunts to foreign countries at the cost of the exchequer, how come they don't see, feel and learn the significance of hygiene there ? The attitude of our Authorities and politicians towards hygiene is very unfortunate and deplorable, the price for which, innocent people may have to pay with their lives. The world over hygiene is the word attached to every aspect of their way of life, but sadly, in Goa, it's a lost treasure that perhaps even the famous treasure hunters Laura Croft, Indian Jones may not be able to stumble on to or find. It's indeed another sad story of the once beautiful Goa. Re: [Goanet] Mamlatdar... first class magistrate?
Yes, they are. They are meant as an alternative to folks who cannot afford getting their certificates attested by a Notary (notary public) in some cases. In order to get a certificate attested, they require additional documents (proof...that you stay in the city, ration card and photo proof..proof of identity, basically). If you happen to be Katlic in certain municipalities, there is an orchestrated against you...you get the marathon run around. While a Notary will 'blindly' sign/attest your document for the buck -isn't it what life in Goa is like, anything for a buck-or-five, the Mamladar usually does it for free (or a very small fee and a fuss). 2011/8/4 Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا fredericknoron...@gmail.com: Dear Goanetters, A reader from the UK wants to know whether a Mamlatdar is a First Class Magistrate in Goa, for attesting original birth certificates to be submitted at the Indian Embassy at UK. [Goanet] Kishore Kumar - Remembering a Genius!
Rafi, Kishore and Mukesh formed the trinity of Hindi film music. Among them, Kishore was perhaps the most talented and versatile. He could sing, dance, act, compose music and write poetry and was exceptional at it all. Born on 4 August 1929, Kishoreda was a multifaceted genius with a soul stirring voice which could capture the hearts of the young and the old alike. As a small school going child, he was my favorite singer and still is. Today happens to be the legendary singer’s 82nd birth Anniversary and on Social networking sites like ‘Facebook’, it was nice to see so many youngsters remember the brilliance of this versatile genius by recalling his songs. Some even replaced their profile pictures with his as a glowing tribute. Although this versatile singer lives no more, his voice lingers in our hearts and will continue to do so for many more generations to follow. As my tribute to the legend, I recall 10 solo songs of his which happen to be my favorites. 1. “Tera mujhse hai pehle ka naata koi Yoonhi nahin dil lubhaata koi” In the Don Bosco’s where I studied; once a month, the whole school would be shown a Hindi movie in the School’s Oratory section; on a big screen. All the children would anxiously wait for this moment to happen. Although I can hardly recollect names of the movies shown in those days, this movie, “Aa Gale Lag Jaa” - and this particular song - has remained etched in my mind. Brilliantly sung by Kishore. 2. “Ek Ajnabi Hasina se Yun mulaaqat ho gayi Phir kya Hua yeh na poochho kuch aisi baat ho gayi” Kishore was best known as the voice of Rajesh Khanna. Mere Sapnon Ki Raani shot Kishore to fame but I prefer this song to that one. This one is a gem composed by another great genius, R.D. Burman. 3. “Tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniya mein aake kuch na phir chaaha kabhi tumko chaahake, tum bin …” Rafi sang another version of this song. Even today, the debate rages on in various music forums as to who sung it better. Hariharan too sang a version in a more recent movie but by no means matching the brilliance of the two legendary singers. Rafi was brilliant as he always is. Kishore improvised with his yodeling. 4. “Chhookar mere man ko kiya tuney kya ishara Badla yeh mausam lagey pyaara Jag Saara….” Amitabh was a superstar and everybody’s favorite actor. Needless to say, he was mine too. Kishore sang many hit songs for Amitabh. This one is my favourite from them all. With music composed by Rajesh Roshan from the movie Yaarana, Kishore impresses in this score with his soft rendition. 5. “O saathii re, tere binaa bhii kyaa jiinaa Tere binaa bhii kyaa jiinaa” Ok, maybe I’m have to do a rethink. This song may be a trifle better than the last one. Kishore is renowned for his sad numbers. This one, from “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” has to rank as one of his best. He was nominated for the ‘Filmfare’ for this track, but lost out to “Khaika Paan Bana Raswala”, another song sung by himself, from the movie ‘Don’. 6. “Aanewala Pal jaanewala hai Ho sake to Is mein Zindagi bitaado Pal jo yeh jaanewala hai” Kishore had the uncanny ability to make even ordinary songs look great. But this one is no ordinary track. From the movie ‘Golmaal’, Kishore added his magical touch to this song which one can hear over and over again, and yet never feel bored of it. The same can perhaps be said about the movie too. 7. “Chehra hai ya chand khila hai Zulf ghaneri shaam hai kya Saagar jaisi aankhon vaali Ye to bataa tera naam hai kya” All songs from the movie ‘Saagar’ were brilliant. One of my favourite S P Balasubramanium number, “Sach mere yaar hai” is also from this movie. But the above track, picturised on Rishi Kapoor and the gorgeous Dimple Kapadia, has to be the best of them all. 8. “Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi, Yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hai Woh kal bhi paas paas thi woh Aaj bhi kareeb hai” Hemant Kumar, a good singer himself, composed the music for this movie ‘Khamoshi’. This movie had another brilliant song, “Tum pukar lo.. tumhaara intezaar hai” which Hemant sang himself but he picked up Kishore for the above gem. A soulful rendition. 9. “Chalte Chalte Mere yeh geet yaad rakhna Kabhi alvida na kehna Kabhi alvida Na Kehna” The King of Disco, Bappi Lahiri, has given us this brilliant composition. A beautiful parting score, every second party has to end with this song. And Kishore’s beautiful rendition has turned this song into a classic. 10. “Main Hoon Jhum Jhum Jhum Jhum Jhumroo Phakkad Ghunghroo Banke Ghumu Main Yeh Pyaar Ka Geet Sunata Chala…..” Kishore Kumar was the King of yodeling. This will undoubtedly be his best yodeling song. The versatile genius acted in this movie, composed the music, wrote the lyrics and sung the song. A true genius. He may no loner be with us today, but his voice lives on. Here’s wishing a ‘Happy 82nd Anniversary’ to the Legendary ‘Singer of the Millennium’ and to his millions of fans worldwide! Cheers, Sandeep Heble
[Goanet] Fwd: Murder- Suicides: The Mental State of Mental Health Professionals as a Risk Prone Group
MONTGOMERY PSYCHIATRIST KILLS SELF, SON ( WASHINGTON POST, U.S.A) By Dan Morse. Thursday, August 4, 2011, 8:01 AM A 54-year-old psychiatrist who doted on her 13-year-old son fatally shot the boy in their Montgomery County home before killing herself, police said Wednesday.Margaret F. Jensvold, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, was deeply committed to the care of her son, Ben Barnhard, who suffered from an autoimmune disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity, according to her friends, court records and Ben’s father. The two lived in Kensington. THE CRIME SCENE Police found the mother and son after Jensvold’s co-workers grew concerned because they hadn’t seen her since late last week, a police spokesman said. Officers were called to the house on Tuesday, went inside and found the two bodies. The mother and son were found in their bedrooms. Newspapers that had been left outside indicated that the pair could have been dead for days. A medical examiner ruled Wednesday that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide, said Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman. “Both victims had at least one gunshot wound,” Starks said. He said Jensvold shot her son and then shot herself. “You don’t expect this,” said Jamie Barnhard, Jensvold’s ex-husband and Ben’s father. “You don’t expect this out of a mental-health professional.” Barnhard sobbed over the phone Wednesday night while describing his son and his ex-wife. “She was a very bright and, for the most part, very happy person,” he said. Ben recently returned from Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas, a renowned weight-loss boarding school, where he lost more than 100 pounds, his father said. “He was bright and energetic,” he said. “A wonderful child in every respect.” In divorce records filed in Montgomery County Circuit Court, Jensvold listed 18 professionals her son needed to see. Among them: child neurologist, allergist, infectious-disease specialist, rheumatologist, educational tutor and psychiatrist. At one point in her career, Jensvold gave up her private practice to become a salaried psychiatrist for Kaiser Permanente, which afforded her more time to seek medical care and educational opportunities for her son. “I can hardly imagine a better parent than Margaret Jensvold,” longtime friend and fellow doctor Jeffery W. Paulson wrote in a letter to the court supporting a petition that she retain custody of Ben. “She is committed to raising her son with all the advantages she can provide for him.” Jensvold grew up in California and attended a magnet program in elementary school for gifted and talented students, according to friends and her ex-husband. She co-edited her high school newspaper, Paulson wrote in his letter of support, and graduated from UCLA. Joyce Braak, a doctor who was Ben’s godmother, wrote that Ben “could not have a more superb mother than Margaret Jensvold.” Part of her commitment was how strongly she delved into her son’s medical problems. Jensvold thought that his illness was the result of a strep infection, said Bob Baum, an attorney who represented her. One court filing, submitted as part of her divorce and custody proceedings, was a research paper she studied titled “A Case of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated With Streptococcal Infections.” Said Baum: “She fought tooth and nail for her son to get his education issues taken care COMMENT: A very tragic heart-rending state of affairs. We are all aware that psychiatry is a very demanding and stressful profession, quite akin to the vocation of Catholic Priests administering the Sacrament of Reconciliation to the Catholic Laity. However the murder-suicide rate in Catholic Priests is almost negligible verging towards non-existence. Can modern Psychiatry and Training Programmes for Professional Psychiatrists take a leaf out of the training of Catholic Priests? The Harvard Medical College has accepted the role of Spirituality in mental health. Should refresher courses in Spitituality be a prescribed ,mandatory part of Continuing Education Programmes for Psychiatrists? Perhaps, this could save them from themselves and the mounting stress occuring through patient- doctor transference.

Albert's post is very interesting. The take-home for me was (i) that third parties don't work in a system like ours too -- so don't blame Floriano's Goa Sudharop or Dr Willy's misadventure called the Goa Congress (ii) our electoral system might just not be the most determining factor in deciding how we are ruled, and by whom which means just blaming the voter for an ugly situation is definitely unfair! [Goanet] EVERY ACT OF TERRORISM CANNOT BE PREVENTED IS A REALITY
Shri Shantaram Naik, Member of Rajya Sabha from Goa said in the Rajya Sabha today, that no government can prevent every act of terrorism, is a bitter truth and we cannot run away from the reality. Mr Naik who initiated the discussion on recent Mumbai blasts on behalf of the Congress party said that truth must be appreciated and persons making a truthful statement should not be condemned. Mr Naik said that when Shri L.K. Advani visited Mumbai blast of 13th July, he said that there was no intelligence failure but policy failure. Mr Naik said that Shri Advani did not point out as to what policy of the government failed and added that the only policy of BJP on terrorism that the country is aware of is that of dropping the terrorists to Khandar in a private plane to safety. Mr Naik said that BJP is friendly with many right wing terrorists in the country and therefore, they should use their influence with them and prevent them from indulging in terrorism and, if this is done, 50% of terrorism in the country will vanish. Mr Naik suggested that Indian Evidence Act should be amended to make new technological evidence admissible. Mr Naik also suggested that school text books should contain lessons on patriotism, so that patriotism is inculcated in the mind of children from the very beginning. He said that law should make it mandatory for every citizen to inform about the terrorists activities or terrorists, in case they come to know about them. Mr Naik said Police Bit System should be activated in all the police stations in the country, so that policemen in charge of their respective bits are able to keep a watch on every household. He suggested that police stations in the country should be modernized and should be equipped with internet, fax and scanning facilities. At the outset there was a pandemonium in the House for about ten minutes and the opposition did not allow Mr Naik to continue with his speech on account of certain observations made by Mr Naik, for which Mr Naik, subsequently apologized. RELEASED THROUGH THE OFFICE OF SHRI SHANTARAM NAIK M.P.

[Goanet] Mining Contaminating Democracy
http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=953boxid=33842750uid=dat=8/5/2011-- *letters to the editor* *For letters to the editor contact us at editorherald@ herald- goa. com* Mining contaminating democracy It is well known that mining in Goa has a very insignificant contribution to the state’s GDP and the profits are not used for the benefits of Goans at large. The profits in fact are mainly diverted to ministers at the centre via their agents in Goa who are also senior ministers in the current Goa government. Therefore, one should not be surprised why the corrupt anti- Goan government in Goa is reluctant to stop the destructive/ illegal mining which is devastating GoA. The huge profits realised by the anti- Goan politicians are then put to some use in buying off voters with rice, sugar, paying of amenties like water/ electricity, sponsorships of tiatrs, football tournaments, religious ventures etc. One sure way to stop the contamination of democracy is to put a stop to the anti Goan politician from gaining huge incomes illegally from mining.; which I hope we appreciate is keeping the current corrupt anti Goan government in power.
