Was'nt it Tenysson Tony?
Comment:
You are absolutely right. It was indeed Alfred, Lord Tennyson in 'The
Charge of the Light Brigade', a poem which was very popular in our school
elocution competition.

[Goanet] Merces remembers Dr Jack de Sequeira

2012-01-22 Thread Isidore Mendis
Merces remembers Dr Jack de Sequeira

         Isidore Domnick Mendis

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Opinion Poll Day, a melodious musical
extravaganza -Konkani Kantarancho Kariakrom was orgainsed by Konkani Kala Kendr
Merces (KKK). This renowned cultural group of Merces was till recently known as
Goykaranchi Konkani Bhas, Songit Kala ani Sonskrutai Kendr (GKBSKSK). The 16th
Jan 2012, evening coincided by paying rich tributes to the Father of Opinion
Poll Dr Jack de Sequeira.

The Chief Guest of the  musical extravaganza was Fr Conceissao D’Silva Parish
Priest of Taleigao.Fr Maverick Fernandes of Council for Social Justice and
Peace along with Fr Clifford Castelino Asst parish priest of Our Lady of Merces
Church, Merces   graced the occasion as special invitees.

A close aide of Dr Sequeira and one of the last surviving stalwarts of Opinion
Poll Joao Fernandes was honored by Konkani Kala Kendr Merces. Joao expressed
his agony that today most Goans had forgotten the priceless contribution of Dr
Sequeira and that was to get Goa for Goans.

Joao showered paean on both Dr Sequeira and other luminaries of that famous
movement like Anton Caitan Fernandes(founder of ‘oHeraldo’), Antonio Fernandes
(Xiru), Anton Fernandes, Joao Joao, Kerin and Bonifacio Rodrigues.

Fr Conceissao too expressed anguish that the present rulers of Goa do not care
for Goa and Goans. “The principles of unselfishness and thoughtfulness
practiced whole heartedly by the late leader of United Goan Party (UGP) do not
apply to the present day politicos who are both  corrupt as well as  self
centered. Ironically even this year while celebrating Opinion Poll anniversary
only the villages of Calangute and Merces remembered Dr Sequeira.

Fr Conceissao who is also the main preacher of the famed Jesus Mary Ministry
Goa asked derisively why only Calangute and KKK of Merces  only remembers Dr
Sequeria. “What has happened to the other talukas and more so to Salcette
Taluka  which coincidentally during the time of historic opinion poll had
played a decisive role in preventing Goa from being swallowed by Maharashtra.
Why has Dr Sequeira become an anathema to our present day Goan rulers? Why do
they run from even discussing his name?” asked Fr Conceissao.

Konkani lovers were spell bound by the captivating ‘kantaran’ rendered under
the tutelage of melody king Lawry Travaso. The audience was awestruck to the
heart rendering numbers delivered by both stalwarts and upcoming stars of
Konkani numbers comprising of Mario Menezes, Anthony San, Tony De Ribandar,
Marcus Vaz, Mario Da Vasco, Clerissa, Jessica, Rosy Alvares, Joana, Ben
Evangelisto, Alexinho da Morjim and Elvis. The comedian duo of Joana and Ben
Evangelesto were at their best to pepper the evening with laughter and humour.

The 2011 KKK, Merces winners of 2011 Gandhi Jayanti Essay competition in Roman
script were also rewarded with cash prizes during the occasion.

Re: [Goanet] Merces remembers Dr Jack de Sequeira

2012-01-22 Thread vivek araujo

A well thought ideathis is the way to go ...It would certainly be of great
importance to have a Dr Jack De Sequeira statute raised in Panjim to
commemorate not only him but Goans should see the Statue and be grateful to him
for his greatest contribution in the opinion poll, probably the Goan Youth of
today should be informed what Opinion Poll was and is all about and why we must
pay great respects to Dr. Jack De Sequeira, just imagine if there was no
Opinion Poll where would Goa and Goans be?

The below information was an article written by Mr. Nandakumar Kamat:

Before that a tremendous amount of groundwork had been done by Dr Jack de
Sequeira in Goa and New Delhi. He had met three successive prime
ministers–Nehruji, Shastriji and Indiraji to press for a demand for opinion
poll. The resolution was passed in CCPB meeting on Sept. 3, 1966. Then Indiraji
moved fast. Within a record period of two months the central government drafted
Act No 38 of 1966, The Goa, Daman and Diu (Opinion Poll) Act, 11 pages with 35
sections.
On December 1, 1966, the Lok Sabha passed the Act followed by the Rajya Sabha
on December 7. On December 15, it was published in the Official Gazette of Goa.
The president gave assent on December 16. The Chief Electoral Officer of Goa, P
B Venkatasubramaniam declared January 16, 1967 as the day for India’s first,
the only and so far the last “opinion poll”.
Out of 38,8,392 total voters 31,7,633 cast their ballots. Anti-mergerists
polled 17,2,191 votes and the pro-mergerists polled 13,8,170 votes.

That is really spelt as molho, as used in fish, meat and prawn preserved in
sauces. Other spellings as used by commercial vendors and English writers are
corruptions, as English-educated people cannot prounce lho properly and ends up
as llo, as in carvalho pronounced as carvallo. Right Selma :-) ?

Molho=sauce

[Goanet] FIGHTING CORRUPTION AND INJUSTICE NOT A EASY MISSION

2012-01-22 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Fighting injustice is no easy task. One faces a backlash of crank calls,
vicious anonymous letters and more seriously the risk of an attempt on
one’s life.

On 13th October 2008 such an attempt was made by a gang of seven who had
come all ready to dispatch me to heaven or maybe to hell. It was, however,
a miraculous escape. My time may have not have been up.

The Panaji police who launched a massive manhunt for the attackers were
able to arrest six accused at Mahableswar where they had fled after
attacking me. It has now been over three years but the seventh accused,
Dinesh Patil who happens to be the nephew of Santa Cruz MLA Mrs. Victoria
Fernandes, is still absconding.

The case has been going on for the last three years. On 6th December last
year, in the true Christian spirit of forgiveness in the season of advent,
I felt it was proper to pardon and forgive these six young misguided youth.
I accordingly met the Judge concerned and put my request in writing that I
would not like to prejudice the future of these young six. The pain they
inflicted on me was heavy but the trauma and ordeal they faced after the
attack and over the last three years was appropriate punishment and a
pardon may help them reform themselves.

Over the last 35 years of fighting against injustice, nobody has been able
to intimidate me. I have never been cowed down by any threats of
consequences that I have had to face for speaking out fearlessly.

Over the years I have never hesitated to take on the powerful and mighty
over a wide range of issues. Be it the Governor of Goa on the Right to
Information Act or the High Court Judges attending that private dinner at
an Advocate’s residence, I have never shied away from pursuing a whole
range of issues involving senior politicians to well-connected bureaucrats.
Even that October 13th 2008 brutal attempt on my life has not cowed me down.

I have had nothing personal against anyone about whom I have raised issues
over the years. When highlighting an issue, it is bound to hurt some
individuals. Have I hurt one too many? One has to have the spine to speak
out against things that are wrong. I will continue to highlight any
injustice that I see. Nothing shall deter me and my commitment in this
regard. The risk of having one’s fingers chopped is a small price one may
have to pay in the bigger battle against corruption and injustice.

I am content that over the years I have been able to achieve a lot without
being a Panch, Sarpanch, MLA or MP. By not being elected as a Corporator
last year I was saved from having to embroil myself with the Corporation of
the City of Panaji’s garbage. One does not have to hold any position to
serve those seeking justice. In recent years the Right to Information Act
has been a big aid and a very handy tool in fighting for what is right and
exposing the rampant corruption.

Looking back over the last over three and half decades, I do not regret
having taken up any issue I did. At times one pays a heavy price and
fighting public causes does take a toll on your family life. Having crossed
50, it may be time to slow down but one needs to maintain the spirit and
keep on fighting. Life is a very short voyage, a journey, the end of which
we know not. So let’s keep up the fight

Mogal Tonybab,

The best way (for you) to organise the bringing of this discussion
"back on track" and to 'debate Eugene's initial post' is as follows:

1: Quote BC (and others, where and when applicable) correctly. You
have still not got it right.
2: Understand that your repeated misquoting of BC (on this topic)
derailed the discussion.
3: Initiate (re-initiate) the "debate".

If your post is interesting, you will get a response;if not, you will
not. For now, you are playing to the pleasure and entertainment of BC

Re: [Goanet] Issues for the upcoming election. (Reposting table converted to text).

2012-01-22 Thread Bernardo de Sousa
Goans deserve a corrupt administration, so please stop complaining

Practically every single day Herald e-Paper carries one or more articles and/or
an editorial and/or letters from readers complaining about corruption in Goa.
Goanet readers also regularly post comments on this topic. Since more than a
decade, an American colleague keeps telling me that the US is heading towards
ruin because Americans vote with their wallet. Goans do exactly the same. When
I ask people who complain to me about rampant corruption in Goa why they vote
over and over again for the persons they accuse of being corrupt, the most
frequent answer is “To mujem kam korta” (He gets my work done). This implies,
of course, that some illegal transaction of the voter gets legalised through
the intervention of the MLA concerned, possibly against a “fee” – a win-win
mutually beneficial situation. This could be e.g. the tarring of an approach
road on private property at the taypayer’s expense, obtaining a construction
permit for agricultural land, legalising a claim as sole proprietor of family
property that would otherwise legally need to be shared with other members of
the family who happen to be NRI’s and are unaware of what is going on (a
favourite Goan pastime), getting a government position for a totally
unqualified family member, etc. etc. This accounts for fifty percent of the
electorate. The other fifty percent of the electorate that abstains from voting
does so because the persons concerned have no personal gain or benefit that
they expect to derive. The so-called winnability of a candidate thus depends on
his or her “kam korunk” ability, a criterion that is intrinsically linked to
corruption.

Goans vote with their wallets for the person from whom they expect to obtain
maximum personal gain by whatever means, mostly illegal. Therefore, they
deserve the corrupt administration that they themselves have put in place in
democratic and fair elections. So Goans need to either change their paradigm or
put up with it but please stop complaining about it. As Joseph de Maistre aptly
stated in 1811, more than a century ago: "Every country has the government it
deserves” (“Toute nation a le gouvernement qu’elle mérite").

For those of you who really and sincerely envisage a change in paradigm, here
is an easy guide in tabular form. This guide is a draft (with emphasis on
draft) that needs to be completed/corrected/aligned, as an individual voter or
as a group, to each individual constituency. You can then cast your vote for
the candidate to whom you give the highest score. This is not a guarantee for a
clean administration but you will increase the probability in favour of one.
Good luck.

[Goanet] : Mathany`s magic

2012-01-22 Thread Nelson Lopes
Mathany`s Magic
He  came in to the picture of Goa scene after the movement on META
STRIPS Nothing changed on the ground with many cases filed against the
supporters and they were a harassed lot The company started operation
and there is no guessing , as to who benefited from this  operation
The momentum fizzled out, as it always happens, when the leaders are
convinced and accommodated. He got elected on UGDP platform on the
aspiration of the
constituents. His ambitions saw him desert the party and give in to
his hidden ambitions for power and glory His entry into BJP a rank
communal party led Govt, fulfilled his greed for position and gave a
handle to the BJP, perhaps to proclaim their secular image and credentials.
The fleeting moments in the Govt. corridors of powers, left an indelible
mark on the buttered side of bread He lost the next election , a
fall out of his treachery and cunning. Ever since the BJP finds him a
good propaganda material to woe the Catholics. He stood for the south
Goa seat of Parliament and lost miserably with all the indirect
support of the BJP
He may be dreaming big , that his presence will make the community align
with him with the communal outfit .He is sadly mistaken in his game
plan and he will live to rue it. The leopard does not change its
spots, and it is wishful thinking to be in the garb of chameleon
changing colours. The electorate is by now, wise enough to see through
the smoke screen of camouflage, deceit and treachery and his
association and hobnobbing with the BJP will not have any effect on
the electoral politics of Goa in the south , including the seat from
where he hopes to win In In what way is he going o make the BJP
change their hard stand, dictated by RSS and National party ?We see in
the pictures  that he is not even confident standing with them,,
hiding behind, as non entity, with diminished exuberance and display
of self defeat. He will learn the hard way that one
swallow does not make a spring The earlier members of the community
have left that party and their own hardliners have resigned to seek
their fortune else where. Judas, the traitor sold his Master, with whom
he enjoyed love and affection for thirty pieces of silver , with the
famous KISS of final betrayal. It is a secret as to what  has changed hands,,
as it is normal in such switch of allegiance The treachery of JUDAS,
never till date altered the course of history
Let Parikar enter all the constituencies in the south mounted on the
donkey to realise it is all in vein He is alluding himself under a
false premise of wooing the community in the garb of demonstrating an
experiment of embracing all wit a bear hug The BJP under Parikar has
shown all signs of anti catholic, hatred , vengeance bias in
promotions, employment, transfers, developement etc If there was a
change in the leadership of the BJP , may be, it would  send a signal
of reconciliation Parikar with his authocratic ways and know all attitude
spells doom for his own party not withstanding He brooks no challenge
to his leadership challenge in the frog pond, dissuading Naik Shripad.
Goan electorate is not
foolish to be swayed by Mathany or his likes and will definitely give him a
humiliating defeat, as principles, character, honesty and selfish
interest of glorification will be his nemesis
Mr Parkar is no P.C Sorkar, with magic wand of Mathany to pull out
rabbit from thin air, nay the hat. BJP existence in Goa is due to ,
foolish, mistaken greed of MGP to come back to power and is as the
result fallen from the pedestal of glory and decimated. It is a
challenge to Parikar to field willing traitors, if any, in all the
constituencies in the south, to see the mathany effect, instead of
promising to support out of helplessness

[Goanet] Support Fr Bismark

2012-01-22 Thread Freddy Agnelo Fernandes
Support Fr Bismark

Ripples were caused all over Goa and more so in Goa’s political pond,
when Fr. Bismark, a Catholic priest announced his candidature for the
forthcoming Assembly elections in Goa, it could yet cause history in
Goan politics. Initially there was a mixed reaction from Goans when
Fr. Bismark expressed his desire to contest elections. People,
especially the Goan Catholics were not sure how to digest the absurd
idea of one of their priest jumping into the quagmire of Goan
politics, knowing fully well the filth and the immorality that thrives
therein. But two week down the line people have a changed perception
as truth prevailed over mind-set and they realized the futility of
trying to change our appalling and squalid system from outside the
system and now most have welcomed the idea of a Catholic priest in
Goa’s Vidhan Sabha. We have been complaining for far too long that a
rotten apple spoils all the good apples in a basket but here we could
yet be witnesses to a good apple changing the bad ones for a change,
anyway it is high time that spirituality permeated the walls of our
Vidhan Sabha and restored its sanctity and sanity as well.

Fr. Bismark as a socio-environmental activist needs no introduction;
his actions and his work speak for itself and his commitment to the
Goan causes. He has been leading the aggrieved people from the front
in the fight against corruption; the anti peoples policies and the
environmental degradation. It is not just we the Catholics but the
whole of Goa is proud of Fr. Bismark and his principles. He has been
such a revelation in this otherwise horrid situation, that it isn’t
even surprising that he commends such huge support from even the vast
majority of the non Catholic community, which shows that, if we can
come up with some good and credible candidates, our people will
support them, irrespective of which community they belong to.

The Church Authorities in Goa have been mute about the situation and
have refrained from making any statements in the case of Fr. Bismark’s
candidature. I only hope the Church Authorities will not see the
actions of Fr. Bismark as challenging the Authorities but on the
contrary as of service to the Goan society and the environment who are
both victimized and ravaged by our very own who were elected to work
for the wellbeing and welfare of Goa and Goans. In the Church today we
have doctors, lawyers, scientists, scholars, social workers and other
professionals working for the betterment of society, so why cannot we
have Fr. Bismark, a priest as a politician in Goa ? As a politician he
will still be serving the people of Goa and the land of his birth and
it could have enough influence to restore the ever flagging
credibility of Goan politics and our faith in it too.

Fr. Bismark has been a source of inspiration to many young and the old
with not just his fiery speeches but also his keenness to walk the
talk as well. His honesty, dedication and integrity are beyond
reproach as we know how he has stood up against his own institution
and our corrupt politicians, in keeping with his principles. There is
no doubt that he has all the attributes to be a very good politician
and a person who has such courage and conviction as he does, he could
be the much awaited source of metamorphosis for healthy Goan politics.

On 21st January 2012, a meeting was held at the Sea View hotel Dubai,
by the NRG’s from Cumbarjua constituency and their well-wishers,
pledging their support for Fr. Bismark as the candidate for their
constituency for the forth coming Goa Assembly elections. It was
wonderful to note that the NRG’s though far away from home, still love
Goa and want the much needed change in Goa’s political arena. It was
indeed good to see Goans together and united for a common cause. I
wish to congratulate Cumbarjuemkars for the initiative they have taken
to support Fr. Bismark as their candidate for the forth coming
elections and wish them all the very best in their endeavor and I hope
other Goan across the globe will take this as a cue and work to garner
support for a worthy candidate of their own constituency.

meant post. Nelson Lopes also wrote an excellent post from the
freezing climes of NE USA. My good friend ex-Capt Gerald Fernandes has
suddenly (and unfortunately) gone silent (on this list, at least).

RESPONSE:

I invite Bernardo to read Nelson's most recent post.

Now, to Bernardo's post:

[1] I (partially) agree with the following:

(a): "The so-called winnability of a candidate depends on his or
her “kam korunk” ability, a criterion that is intrinsically linked to
corruption."

I suggest that Anyone in doubt, please contact Tony Correia- Afonso in Benaulim

I'd like to add that Winnability also depends very significantly upon
Caste and Religion. Anyone in doubt, please review the infamous
VideoCD from which Manohar Pontius Pilate Parrikar washed hands after
it "ran into trouble". And the blame was so "brilliantly" assigned to
a Non-Catholic Katlick puppet on a string.

==

[2] I need further information on the following, before I comment :
"the US is heading towards ruin because Americans vote with their
wallet."

Would appreciate a clarification of that comment and support for that statement.

==

[3] I disagree with the following

(b) 'Goans need to either change their paradigm or put up with it but
please stop complaining about it.'

Gerald was right when he stated that Goans have been emasculated. He
was, of course, wrong as to WHICH masters truly emasculated Goans for
good.

Bernardo may wish to think again: Are Goans the decision makers in Goa
or even in the Goan elections? And what has happened to the so called
'honesht' candidates AFTER they were elected? e.g. Farrel, Luizinho,
Matanhy etc?

(c) Goans deserve a corrupt administration, so please stop complaining

Goans did not and do not deserve it. It is their Karma. So, perhaps,
they should stop complaining about it BUT only because they can do
NOTHING about it.

BTW: Your guide is excellent - Hope the "decisive Migrant Vote Banks"
and the "Caste Banks" will even get to know about your guide, forget
seeing it, reading it or even considering it.

[Goanet] NEWS: Shripad's Porvorim dream shot down (Times of India) ... Christians are the focus of BJP's Goa gameplan (HT)

2012-01-22 Thread Goanet News
Shripad's Porvorim dream shot down
TNN | Jan 22, 2012, 04.16AM IST

PANAJI: BJP's Goa MP Shripad Naik continues to be the state unit's
inevitable fall guy. Naik, who had expressed his desire to contest the
Porvorim seat in the upcoming March assembly polls, has been told by
the party high command that he will not be allowed to do so.

Sources in the party told TOI that during Naik's recent visit to New
Delhi, BJP national president Nitin Gadkari informed Naik that the BJP
high command has decided that he should not contest the state polls
and he should continue as Member of Parliament. A shocked Naik
returned to Goa on Friday.

While rejecting Naik's request to contest from Porvorim, the high
command spoke of "party interest", said sources. A bitterly upset Naik
declined to disclose the discussion he had with Gadkari, but party
sources said the decision has been taken to avoid a tussle over the
chief minister's post if BJP wins the state polls. "We don't want
factional fights after the elections," a senior BJP member said.
Opposition leader and Panaji MLA Manohar Parrikar has been the party's
chief minister in the past and is a contestant for the slot.

Sources said the decision is not just on account of personality-Naik
is considered soft-spoken, while Parrikar is viewed as aggressive-but
on caste lines as well. Naik is the BJP's most prominent face of the
Bhandari Samaj, while Parrikar is representative of the Goud Saraswat
Brahmin community.

Following Naik's treatment, there is strong resentment against the BJP
leadership in the Bhandari Samaj-Naik is the community's most
prominent BJP face-for ignoring its sentiments. Naik's BJP supporters
and well-wishers, who had asked him to quit the party if he was denied
the Porvorim ticket, are expected to meet shortly to decide their
future course of action. Naik, though bitterly upset over the high
command's decision, is against quitting the party.

In reaction to the decision, however, he has informed state party
leaders that he will not be attending a single BJP state election
committee meeting henceforward. The committee has been constituted to
finalize the party's candidates for the assembly polls. The panel is
likely to meet in the first week of February to finalize the
candidates before the central parliamentary committee meeting clears
the final list.

Sources said that BJP vice-president Govind Parvatkar, former BJP
Aldona candidate Kunda Chodankar, Asnodkar brothers Kishore and
Mahanand are aspirants for the Porvorim ticket. There's also a tussle
between hardliners and other BJP members in the constituency.
RSS-oriented members are in favour of Parvatkar getting the ticket.

BJP's alliance partner, regional outfit MGP, is also negotiating for
the Porvorim seat. TOI had earlier reported that the BJP is in the
process of allotting six seats to the MGP, including that of Porvorim.

In 2007, Mayem was identified to facilitate Naik's entry into state
polls, but two months before the assembly elections he was told he
might lose the seat. The seat was won by an even lesser known BJP
candidate, Anant Shet.

In 2002, Naik was asked to resign as central minister and contest
against Ravi Naik in Ponda. He lost that election, leaving his
supporters feeling that the MP is given the ticket only when he is
guaranteed to lose. Naik had travelled to the national capital as the
high command had failed to revert with a decision on his interest to
contest the state elections since late December. With no decision sent
through BJP senior leader Arun Jaitley who was in Goa last Sunday to
launch the Jan Sampark Abhiyan yatra, Naik decided to meet the high
command himself.

Christians are the focus of BJP's Goa gameplan
Shekhar Iyer, Hindustan Times
New Delhi, January 23, 2012

The BJP is going all out to woo Goa's Christians, who account for 25%
of voters and have traditionally backed the Congress. The party has
taken this step after losing electoral battles in Goa, particularly in
the southern parts of the state. Leading this campaign is IIT-educated
former chief minister Manohar Parrikar, 56, who is leader of the
opposition in the 2007-12 Goa assembly, in which the party has only 12
seats.

The state, which has 40 seats, goes to polls on March 3.

For the first time, the BJP has roped in three prominent Christian
leaders from South Goa - Carlos Almeida (Mormugao), Joaquim D'Souza
(Nuvem), and most notably, former Congressman Matanhy Saldanha, who
was Goa's tourism minister - into its fold.

Accompanied by Matanhy Saldanha, who has earned the nickname of being
the "BJP's Catholic mascot", Parrikar is campaigning across the
traditional Congress strongholds in Goa through his "jan sampark
yatra", which was flagged off by senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

Parrikar, who is seen as the BJP's CM candidate, is said to enjoy a
good rapport with local Church leaders since he was CM between 2000
and 2005.

In his first term in office, Parrikar had come up with a scheme to

'Tiatr will be 120 years old this April'
DOLCY D’CRUZ

As every institution, the Tiatr Academy of Goa ( TAG) has its share of
decision making and has successfully worked out schemes that help the
younger and older generation of tiatrists. Giving a brief history of the
academy, Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG says, “ This demand to form
an academy was put forward by followers of Konkani in Roman script. When
demanding for Konkani as the official language, there was equal status
for Konkani in Roman script and Devnagiri script. Now since Konkani is
mostly written in Devnagiri script, we put forward 13 demands which
included changing the name of the indoor auditorium in Ravindra Bhavan
as Joao Agostinho Hall which has been done. A cultural policy was
implemented whose Chairman was Dr Nandakumar Kamat. He asked me to give
inputs about tiatr for the cultural policy. The Chief Minister, Digambar
Kamat showed great interest as he felt that tiatr was the most dramatic
art form of Goa and yet it was not given due respect. Though I am not
beneficial to the CM in his political life in any way, he selected me as
the President of the academy and formed the Tiatr Academy of Goa.”

Tiatrs have been performed at different levels in Goa. What brought
about an academy after all these years? Tomazinho answers, “ Tiatr will
be 120 years old on April 17, 2012 and so far tiatrs were being
organised by dramatic troupes with no financial support by the
government. It was done completely on their cost and the commercial
success where there is no chance for experimentation with the form but
just giving people what they want to watch. Through the institution, we
bring up the standard of tiatr so that the tiatrists can experiment with
the form and take it to the next level. The government has given TAG one
crore, eight lakhs rupees to start the academy and a separate amount to
start a library. A ten member committee was selected which in turn
elected a ten member General Council who unitedly elected the Vice
President. An eight member executive board was formed to bring
functional structure. Once the entire committee was formed, 36 schemes
were decided upon for each section of tiatr and music.”

Each schemes plays an important role towards preserving tiatr and since
the academy was formed more efforts were made to get information for
aging tiatrists. “There was no oral documentation of tiatrs as once the
tiatr was performed the script would be misplaced. Through the scheme ‘
oral documentation of history of tiatr’ we meet and interview aging
tiatrists on video. They have a lot of information which would be lost
if not documented. There is a scheme of ‘ documentation of tiatr through
research work’ through which three books have been released.

One book ‘ Konkani Gramophone Records’, brings out the importance behind
the recording of Konkani songs on vinyl records right from the first
song. ‘Mirmirancho Mog’ sang by Joao Agostinho in 1910 to the last song
recorded in 1983.”

Tiatr is a unique form of drama enjoyed by a huge population in Goa. TAG
is trying to preserve the true form of tiatr. “ Our aim is to preserve
the form of tiatr as it has music but it is not a musical, it has prose
but it is not like most English or Marathi plays. The popular form of
tiatr has 6- 7 acts where each act has four small songs, comedy linked
with the story, songs in the form of solos, duets, trios and quartets
which together brings out the uniqueness of tiatr. Tiatr is majority
enjoyed by the Catholic community, however over the years, many non-
catholics have also joined tiatrs to perform onstage or to handle the
technical aspects backstage. ‘Mahanand’, a tiatr brought in a huge
number of non- Catholics to watch the tiatr and there are people to
witness tiatrs on a regular basis. There is a charm in watching a live
performance and I don’t think, tiatr will be affected by CD and VCD
productions.”

TAG has a lot more goals to achieve. “ Although tiatr is popular, it has
to have a standard and has to go on par with plays in other languages on
a national level. TAG is working on a model tiatr and it is making
efforts to involve children as they are the future of tiatr,” he concludes.

[Goanet] Roque promoted to prestigious SAI post

2012-01-22 Thread Goanet Sports

Roque promoted to prestigious SAI post

TEAM HERALD

NEW DELHI: Fifty- year old Roque Dias, who began his sports career as
Goa's badminton player in the Nationals from 1975 to 1982, on Monday
took over as the Regional Director of Sports Authority of India (SAI) in
Delhi, the third top post in the organisation after the director
general, executive directors and secretary.

Roque was earlier heading the National Institute of Sports ( NIS) at
Patiala. His promotion was cleared last month by a promotion committee
headed by Sports Minister Ajay Maken, recognising the administrative
capabilities he has shown in every position he held in SAI, the
government body promoted by the Centre.

An alumni of the prestigious Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Roque
was also the first youngest Goan to take over as Goa's Director of
Sports and Youth Affairs on deputation from SAI. He was earlier also the
regional head of the SAI's western region headquartered at Gandhinagar
in Gujarat.

In the Delhi Commonwealth Games, 2010, he was appointed as the Deputy
Director General for import of equipment and emerged as one of the
officers coming clean without an iota of doubt over his sincerity and
honesty. He is also the author of the book entitled “Eduardo Faleiro -
An Inspiration to Millions - A True Story of Yoga exponent.”

Roque contributed immensely to sports development like developing
infrastructure, laying of synthetic surfaces, import of equipment and
preparation of the Indian teams. He organised many international events
and represented the government in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games to
study the administration and organisational inputs to help in hosting
the Games in Delhi.

His proficiency in sports and social activities led to the first
National youth award he got from the hands of then Prime Minister Rajiv
Gandhi and later deputation to Japan by the government to represent
India. He appeared on the cover page of the International Youth report
published by the Government of Japan and circulated the world over, in
recognition of his efforts to promote sports and youth activities.

After graduating as Bachelor of Science, Roque had plunged himself into
playing competitive badminton when he felt good governance in sports is
need of the hour. That is how he went to NIS Patiala to secure a
coaching diploma in badminton and later completed his Masters in Public
Administration.

Re: [Goanet] Dol Mhojea Bai - Pipitt, Kemkem, Biskutt, Bol, Boll, Mama, tata etc - What it all means?

2012-01-22 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Would molho also be the spelling in Konkani? I ask this taking corruptions
into consideration. To mean, would someone versed in Konakani orthography
write it as "molho?"

Forget English educated speakers and pronunciation. That is by no means a
given. Some of us have pretty decent prounciation chops in various
languages (and difficult ones too). If one has lived amongst people and
engaged with those who speak it well (assumption, on my part), one absorbs
the pronunciation.

I am simply trying to understand why many Konakani speakers now in the
70-80s (some who speak Portuguese -- perhaps not as great as the others)
sound as though they are saying moll (not as the word moll in archaic
English, as in prostitute), but a drawn out rounding off the "ll." "ll"
mute (unvoiced)!

I am not also not talking about Portuguese speakers who may/probably bring
Portuguese renditions directly into Konkani.

Re: [Goanet] Business as usual - Diana Pinto

2012-01-22 Thread Edwin\Diana pinto

Business as usual

by Diana Pinto

Politicians and political parties contest elections to seek votes and
democratic validation in their endeavour to serve the people. Or so they
would have us believe. Indeed, the run up to the elections is always a
period of fevered activity - a compelling season of hopeful proposals and
intriguing disposals.

For Goa undoubtedly, this election appears to herald the disintegration of
old, traditional loyalties and mindsets, even as new contours in the shape
of strange alliances and unlikely political partnerships are sought to be
created. It is also the season for active promotion of "family welfare" as
wives, daughters, sons, nieces and nephews come crawling out of the
woodwork, stridently demanding a share of the electoral space as their
political inheritance and birthright.

The political mating season was initiated by the MGP, who flirted brazenly
with the BJP, notwithstanding their existing political alliance with the
Congress. This budding romance however, withered, even before it blossomed
and the "Lion" was back, eating out of the "Hand". But as of now, the MGP
has once again given in to the temptation of "biting the hand that feeds it"
and is back to making amorous advances to the BJP.

The political drama that riveted the attention of the Goan electorate
however, was the coupling of the unsinkable Micky Pacheco and his newly
acquired Goa Vikas Party with the colourful UGDP of "dhon pannam" fame.
While both parties displayed commendable unanimity in attacking the alleged
ineptitude, corruption and misgovernance of the Congress government, seat
sharing and other aspects of their own alliance agreement alas did not
elicit the same level of consonance and harmony in GVP's Pacheco and UGDP's
Anacleto Viegas. The unfolding of the drama continued the next day, when
UGDP's Radharao Gracias, conspicuous by his absence the previous day,
inexplicably waded into the fray, warning that the UGDP would field
candidates wherever its prospects appeared bright if "Micky Pacheco turned
out to be unreasonable on seat sharing". Was this a case of delayed
reaction - an attempt to draw up the "pre-nuptial" agreement after the
marriage was consummated? Still one can always count on the artful Radharao
to keep the people of Goa guessing indefinitely as to the fate of both the
unlikely spouses in this questionable marriage.

In the meantime, the BJP, which had not so long ago blotted its copybook
with the minority Christian community through the controversial VCD, and
canceling of the December 3rd and Good Friday holidays, seems to have
redeemed its image. As elections drew near, the prospect of a minority vote
bank was reason enough for Manohar Parrikar to declare that the canceling of
the two holidays had been a mistake. Understandably, they certainly wasted
no time in exploiting the people's disenchantment with the Congress'
miserable track record in governance coupled with their total insensitivity
and indifference to the cries of their voters with respect to the RP 2021
and the illegal mining imbroglio. Indeed, the Congress' Jitendra Deshprabhu
was Goa's answer to the BJP's Kushwaha in Uttar Pradesh. Ignominously
expelled from the NCP after his arrest on illegal mining charges, a beaming
Deshprabhu was literally embraced into the Congress fold once again.

It is crystal clear that Christians and Muslims find themselves stuck
between a rock and a hard place this election season. Accustomed to being
taken for granted by an overconfident Congress party, who felt that they
were the minorities sole alternative, the Christians and Muslims seem to
have finally reached tipping point. A number of minority leaders were
welcomed into the ranks of the saffron brigade, amidst broad smiles and
pleasant anticipation of happy days to come. Indisputably, the prize catch
of the season was Goa's political firebrand activist Matanhy Saldanha, who
in his stint as Cortalim MLA, had limited his association with the Parrikar
led government to mere support on the floor of the Assembly. The UGDP-GVP
alliance and the uncertainty about the Cortalim ticket obviously prompted
him to jump into the deep end, forsaking all his earlier reservations about
the incompatibility of national parties with Goa's regional aspirations. But
then, one can hardly blame him for throwing in the towel, because, as the
MGP has openly admitted, "survival" rather than the interests of Goa and
Goans, is presently the top priority of regional parties. And perhaps there
was some truth in the statement of BJP state President Laxmikant Parsekar
when he said "though Matanhy's soul was with the BJP, now after 10 years,
his body too has joined the BJP." Given the track record of BJP ruled states
and their ideology however, it is indeed dangerously simplistic to assume
that saffron leadership will succeed in burnishing Goa's tarnished image.

There is no do

Re: [Goanet] Issues for the upcoming election. (Reposting table converted to text).

2012-01-22 Thread Gerald Fernandes
Dear JC,
1.Every time there is an Election in Goa there is an outpouring of genuine
concern about the way and direction in which the polity of Goa is headed, but
most unfortunately no sooner the counting of the polled votes is completed this
surge seems to mysteriously begin to evaporate.

2.If it is true that NATIONS DESERVE THE ARMED FORCES THEY GET(
incl.Pakistan,Portugal,Bangladesh,U.K,USA etc etc ad- infinitum) then NATIONS
DESERVE THE GOVT. THEY ELECT. This is poignantly true in a democracy.

3. Goa has forty (or has it now become forty-one?) representatives in its
Legislature. The Constituency size is around 24000(twentyfour thousand Electors.
It is not difficult for clever operators, especially the Mining,Tourism and
Transportation lobbies to game the system of Elections to their benefit, as
some seriously suggest that they have been doing. The small Constituency size
aids this process and people with the money ,resources (financial and brains)
do this. An example will suffice to illustrate. Last Elections some Candidates
distributed Motor-Cycles to the young Electors with the condition that the
installments on the bike would be borne by the candidate if he wins and would
have to be borne by the individual Elector if he loses! Great way
to ensure results and a novel financing strategem in Goa!!! Isnt it?

4. Personally speaking, it would be better to work around the year. There is no
dearth of instruments available to every citizen to bring about desirable
change. I subscribe to the thought "BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE
WORLD" The way forward appears to be "the expanding torrent approach". Punch a
very small hole in a massive wall and let the expanding surge ,over a period of
time demolish it. It is in this context that efforts by Bismarque et al need to
be viewed. The rest is oral dysentry.

Bernardo de Sousa bdeso...@bluewin.ch wrote an excellent and well

==

[2] I need further information on the following, before I comment :
"the US is heading towards ruin because Americans vote with their
wallet."

Would appreciate a clarification of that comment and support for that statement.

==

[Goanet] Konkani VCD on Ravina - just allegations and false propaganda? If it is, what a shame for those involved in such cheap gimmicks

[Goanet] Konkani VCD on Ravina - just allegations and false propaganda?
If it is, what a shame for those involved in such cheap gimmicks

A reply in today’s Herald 23/1/12

VCD on Ravina
This refers to the letter ‘VCD on Ravina’ by Andrew Pereira (Herald January
12,2012)
The death of Ravina was due to ‘criminal medical negligence’ as stated in
the Health Committee report. The wording ‘criminal’ has been used, as there is
a serious motive behind the death. The say, that late Ravina, made the
allegation of kidney removal by the doctors, when she was alive. A case has
been filed in Court and this will be proved in the due course of time. The post
mortem report will be challenged when the time comes as there are lot of
negligence on the same. I am not aware of the edited version of the VCD on the
net, as I am not computer literate. As a tiatrist, I have shown the people the
fact about Ravina’s death as this should not happen to anyone in the future.
If you read the inquiry report, you will understand that her death is a cold
blooded murder.
