[Goanet] A Goan Goan: A model for the 21st Century
>From the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute on the occasion of his 362nd birth >anniversary (b. April 21, 1651). It’s official. A non-European has been elected Pope. A new perspective from the New World has been set for the future Church. What can Africa and Asia add to the latest flurry of recommendations for Pope Francis? Firstly, Indian Catholics can go beyond reform of bureaucracy and existing framework of the Church’s rules right into the mystical heart of religion. Blessed Joseph Naik Vaz famously followed the ideal of a Christian saint and Eastern sannyasi and bodhisattva, combining the ideals of renunciation and detachment by not even touching or accepting money for his work and giving compassionate service to suffering human beings during the smallpox epidemic in Kandy. He was recognized as a living saint by his Catholic bishop and contemporaries as well as by the Buddhist King of Kandy and other non-Christians. Instead of imposing religion as part of a package of colonial conquest and sweeping away the religious ideals, languages, music and culture of non-European peoples, he used them all in the liturgy and in founding a Sri Lankan Catholic literature. Most important of all, he is the ultimate model of selfless, humble devotion to the people as a priest and pastor, even under intense persecution. The modern Church could well benefit from his example of moral integrity and humility. As we celebrate his 362nd birth anniversary (April 21, 1651), we could work to ask Pope Francis to canonize Blessed Joseph Naik Vaz as a Catholic saint for the 21st century and a special model of the priesthood. http://josephnaikvaz.org/

[Goanet] Sharing meals at funerals
Sharing of meals at funerals When a person expires, close relatives and friends usually join the bereaved family in sharing of meal, before the burial in the sense of solidarity. There is no formal invitation, request to be present. The decision of the participants depends on intimate personal relationship or family ties. The neigbhbours volunteer to prepare the menu, while the members of the family sit around the dead body. This custom can be traced to the fact, that far of relatives had to tread long distances and naturally some arrangement had to be made for their comfort. The dishes include vegetables, rice and curry, fish and one meat dish sometimes. No alcoholic drinks are served .This tradition also helped the bereaved family not to be bothered about their food needs before the funeral. Sometimes, gift, sponsorship of food items is a matter of routine and good will. Often people cannot digest the idea of participating in funeral meal with the body still in the house and will resist all attempts to persuade them to be present. Today the number of such people sharing the pre funeral meal is very much restricted and is just a handful. With the transport facilities and owning of vehicles the mourners can be in time for the funeral ceremony. If the distances from the residences are considerable, transport to and fro from the residences are also arranged. In some families elaborate meals are being arranged after the funeral services, if they are held in the morning. The atmosphere of sharing in such cases is much relaxed and conducive, Food is also being ordered from caterers, thus avoiding the commotion in the funeral home As the mourners arrive early in the afternoon tea is being served to all, since many will not come back for a prayer service after burial. But many tend to refuse it politely. There is a tradition to serve beverage after the funeral services. The time factor and other busy schedules are changing the old traditions. At the months mind service or on the death anniversary close friends and relatives are personally invited to share the meal with the mourning family. [Goanet] Fwd: [Goanet-News] First Indian Jesuit university sets December deadline
Hi Fred, The idea of a Christian University was mooted by Fr Balaguer S J in 1956 or 1957 -- I am glad that Fr Paul Fernandes another Jesuit has take concrete steps to bring this idea to fruition -- To the best of my recollection there is an association of alumnii of Jesuit schools and colleges all over India, which in turn is affiliated to the international Jesuit alumnii association. All of us who have benefited from Jesuit education ( I was a student of St Xaviers School, Calcutta and of St Xavier's College, Bombay) will definitely support this project. Many Goanet members are Jesuit alumnii so your e-mail message should make this project known to a large number of potential supporters. Cheers Aloysius -- Forwarded message -- From: Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا < fredericknoron...@gmail.com> Date: Thu, Apr 18, 2013 at 11:01 PM Subject: [Goanet-News] First Indian Jesuit university sets December deadline To: "Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!" First Indian Jesuit university sets December deadline Published: 9:15 pm, April 17, 2013 Story By: mattersindia.com reporter, Bhubaneswar http://mattersindia.com/first-indian-jesuit-university-sets-december-deadline/ Fr. Paul Fernandes, SJ Bhubaneswar: Jesuits, the schoolmasters of Europe, are all set to launch their first university in India. The campus for the Xavier University will be ready by December near Puri, some 60 kilometers east of Bhubaneswar, capital of the eastern Indian state of Odisha (formerly Orissa). However, the first batch will start from the next academic year in July 2014, the Business Standard today quoted Jesuit Father Paul Fernandes, who is behind the ambitious project. Jesuits, who introduced modern education in India in the 16th century, manage several prestigious colleges in the country, but they all function under government-run universities. Some have received autonomous status. The idea of a Jesuit university was mooted some four years ago. It got the final nod from the Odisha state legislative assembly when it passed the Xavier University Bill 2013 on April 5, reported the Business Standard. The Odisha assembly reportedly passed the bill after a marathon debate. Higher Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra told the house the private university would start functioning in two years. This is for the first time that a private university is having provision of reservation for Odisha students, the minister added. Father Fernandes says the university will set apart 50 percent seats for students from Odisha. “This is a unique feature. No other private university in the country has such provision. We have done it because of our commitment to the state,” the priest told. Lest people in other states get disappointed, the priest quickly added that the Jesuits are studying the possibility of expanding the university to other places. “Odisha is a very important destination of higher education for students. This is an engagement and a commitment,” said the priest, who also directs Xavier Institute of Management, a prestigious business school, in Bhubaneswar. He clarified the new university would not affect the business school, which goes by the acronym, XIM-B. “XIM-B will remain as it is and Xavier University will be a separate entity,” he added. The priest said they had initially estimated the cost to be around 330 million rupees. However, it has escalated to 400 million rupees in the past four years. “In the first phase, the cost of developing 200,000-sqft built up area will be around 40 crore (400 million) rupees,” he said. He said they will start the university with the rural management program. “We would have more plans for the university’s second, third and fourth phase. Where, we would, in each phase, we will add one or two schools of the Xavier University,” he said added that they would share the details later. How will they raise the funds for operations and infrastructure of the university? “We need resources and we seek support openly from alumni, friends, donors and anyone whoever wants to support our venture,” he explained. According to him, the Jesuits are very clear about their vision – establish the university, make it innovative and of greater quality. And the university is not going to limit teaching to business alone. “We may have science and humanities schools of the university. Looking at the state’s needs, we need to strengthen arts, science, cultural and media education. This, however, would be at a later stage,” he added. ### Via Allwyn Fernandes.
[Goanet] Article: Why does America lose its head ...
Why does America lose its head over 'terror' but ignore its daily gun deaths? -- Michael Cohen, The Observer http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/apr/21/boston-marathon-bombs-us-gun-law (link includes comments) The marathon bombs triggered a reaction that is at odds with last week's inertia over arms control --- The thriving metropolis of Boston was turned into a ghost town on Friday. Nearly a million Bostonians were asked to stay in their homes – and willingly complied. Schools were closed; business shuttered; trains, subways and roads were empty; usually busy streets eerily resembled a post-apocalyptic movie set; even baseball games and cultural events were cancelled – all in response to a 19-year-old fugitive, who was on foot and clearly identified by the news media. The actions allegedly committed by the Boston marathon bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, were heinous. Four people dead and more than 100 wounded, some with shredded and amputated limbs. But Londoners, who endured IRA terror for years, might be forgiven for thinking that America over-reacted just a tad to the goings-on in Boston. They're right – and then some. What we saw was a collective freak-out like few that we've seen previously in the United States. It was yet another depressing reminder that more than 11 years after 9/11 Americans still allow themselves to be easily and willingly cowed by the "threat" of terrorism. After all, it's not as if this is the first time that homicidal killers have been on the loose in a major American city. In 2002, Washington DC was terrorised by two roving snipers, who randomly shot and killed 10 people. In February, a disgruntled police officer, Christopher Dorner, murdered four people over several days in Los Angeles. In neither case was LA or DC put on lockdown mode, perhaps because neither of these sprees was branded with that magically evocative and seemingly terrifying word for Americans, terrorism. To be sure, public officials in Boston appeared to be acting out of an abundance of caution. And it's appropriate for Boston residents to be asked to take precautions or keep their eyes open. But by letting one fugitive terrorist shut down a major American city, Boston not only bowed to outsize and irrational fears, but sent a dangerous message to every would-be terrorist – if you want to wreak havoc in the United States, intimidate its population and disrupt public order, here's your instruction booklet. Putting aside the economic and psychological cost, the lockdown also prevented an early capture of the alleged bomber, who was discovered after Bostonians were given the all clear and a Watertown man wandered into his backyard for a cigarette and found a bleeding terrorist on his boat. In some regards, there is a positive spin on this – it's a reflection of how little Americans have to worry about terrorism. A population such as London during the IRA bombings or Israel during the second intifada or Baghdad, pretty much every day, becomes inured to random political violence. Americans who have such little experience of terrorism, relatively speaking, are more primed to overreact – and assume the absolute worst when it comes to the threat of a terror attack. It is as if somehow in the American imagination, every terrorist is a not just a mortal threat, but is a deadly combination of Jason Bourne and James Bond. If only Americans reacted the same way to the actual threats that exist in their country. There's something quite fitting and ironic about the fact that the Boston freak-out happened in the same week the Senate blocked consideration of a gun control bill that would have strengthened background checks for potential buyers. Even though this reform is supported by more than 90% of Americans, and even though 56 out of 100 senators voted in favour of it, the Republican minority prevented even a vote from being held on the bill because it would have allegedly violated the second amendment rights of "law-abiding Americans". So for those of you keeping score at home – locking down an American city: a proper reaction to the threat from one terrorist. A background check to prevent criminals or those with mental illness from purchasing guns: a dastardly attack on civil liberties. All of this would be almost darkly comic if not for the fact that more Americans will die needlessly as a result. Already, more than 30,000 Americans die in gun violence every year (compared to the 17 who died last year in terrorist attacks). What makes US gun violence so particularly horrifying is how routine and mundane it has become. After the massacre of 20 kindergartners in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, millions of Americans began to take greater notice of the threat from gun violence. Yet since then, the daily carnage that guns produce has continued unabated and often unnoticed. The same day o

That the private hospital may not wish to get involved in such cases, is another matter. b: Not very sure what an orthopaedic surgeon (alone) would have done in the above case, if it was serious. In that event, specialised ICU support would have been needed. c: Trauma cases are best dealt with by and in specialised Trauma Units. Such units are best in central and tertiary hospitals. d: While accidents can happen at any time and anywhere, I suggest that Goans should consider the following in Prevention and Management (this is NOT an exhaustive list): PREVENTION: Drive defensively, do NOT drink alcohol and drive, Use helmets on two wheelers, do NOT drive around needlessly, follow traffic rules etc The State has its own responsibilities in preventing mishaps: Fix the roads, Fix the lighting, do NOT allow vehicles which are not roadworthy, implement speed and alcohol checks. MANAGEMENT: organise proper Rescue and Transport mechanisms, have properly set up Trauma Centres (both State responsibilities) BTW: If one eliminates the amount of funds these 'Babus' waste everyday on Welcome and Farewell parties, there would be enough money to set up the needful centres, transport facilities, and employ the necessary staff. ps: I will not get into the nonsense which goes into the NON-hiring of qualified physicians for vacant posts. jc

Something I heard recently in Goa was frightening. A young man met with a bad accident and his ribs were fractured. He was taken to a Government hospital in Mapusa as (I understand from the victim's bro), all accident cases must be taken to government hospitals. The orthopaedic doctor was not available and the family had no other recourse but to either wait till the next day or go to Panjim. This is bizarre! Considering the high accident rate in Goa, should't it be mandatory that such accident cases can be dealt with by the nearest available hospital? Bernice Pereira
