[Goanet-News] Believing in herself... and spreading happiness (by Remediana Dias)

BELIEVING IN HERSELF... AND SPREADING HAPPINESS

Since times of old, a woman attained her identity always
through a male -- either she was known as somebody's daughter
or somebody's mother or somebody's wife. Her plight was like
a satellite that kept orbiting around one planet -- the man.
She never got an opportunity to shine independently like a
star. In other words she could not reflect an identity of
her own.

However with the changing times, women are at par with men.
The new woman is related to society directly. She is no
longer confined to orthodox beliefs and traditions. Today
she has broken the shackles, captitalised on her own
potentials and merits and has carved a niche for herself.
The woman of today has struck a perfect balance between her
professional world and domestic domain.

One such woman is Charmaine DeSouza Fernandes, who
with the active support of her husband plays a
pivotal role in spreading happiness in the lives of
others through her various social projects.

Charmaine can best be described as a woman of forward
thinking, someone who has great faith in herself and is not
afraid to be herself. In the words of her husband, She has
a mind of her own but does not impose her will or ideas upon
others. In fact she believes in using her ideas and
assimilating them to arrive at the best possible decision.

She is not afraid to be tough and successful and also not
afraid to be feminine, sensual, gentle and caring at the same
time. She throws herself into domestic life with the same
amount of energy and enthusiasm she has while pursuing her
various creative interests.

Charmaine takes the best of every philosophy, applies it
wherever relevant to her own life and cooks her own homegrown
recipe for a living. She gently loves the people around her.
She also loves herself as a person.

Charmaine is definitely unique in her own way. She
believes in living a straight life and looks at
reality in the face. She know this is what I am,
this is what I am not and this what I can never
be.” It is because she believed in her potential
and used it in the best possible way that she has
been able to rise, break new ground and achieve
what she wanted in life. She is respectful of her
traditions, values and culture and is not hidebound
  by them.

Excerpts from a tete-a-tete with Remediana Dias
rodrigr...@yahoo.com

Tell us something about you yourself.
-

Well, I'm just an average, ordinary, everyday person. Casual
and down to earth in my appearance but feisty in my beliefs
and what I stand for. I'm extremely straight up and quite
impetuous which gets me into a lot of foot-in-mouth situations.

What sets you apart from others?
-

*Shrug* I'm hoping it's my dashing personality and wicked
sense of humour. (That's a joke.) This is really hard to say
but I think it's my passion for life and my creativity and
sense of humour that I depend upon to get me through even
the worst situations. I believe there's humour in every
strife we face but we just need to look hard to find it.

What are your hobbies?
-

Writing, I love to write. I feel like I can be anything when
I write. I can write about absolutely everything from poetry,
to anecdotes, to lyrics. I just finished writing a children's
fairy story and I am hoping to get it published soon. I am
currently working on a novel as well. It's in the editing
stage.

Writing for me is not only a job but it's a hobby.
When I am not messing about online I'm always
scribbling lines to a new poem or brainstorming for
new stories. I have seven children's stories
completed and working on more including a
collection of my grandfather's and my bedtime
  stories.

I read a lot too, mainly sci-fi and horror. I write and
compose music when I'm bored. I play the guitar, okay let me
rephrase that, I try to play guitar and sing. Unfortunately I
don't have place for a piano. That's something I miss a lot.

I love theater. I used to act with The Mustard Seed Art
Company right up till 2000 and then I decided I wanted to
pursue music. I would definitely love to get back to acting
if I got a chance to or more importantly if I get time. My
evenings are quite lazy.

I game (mostly World of Warcraft). I spend a
ridiculous amount on Facebook. I watch a lot of
movies, mostly sci-fi, horror, animated and all the
superhero ones. When it comes to sports, I love
swimming and cycling. I started karate classes
with Sensei Joseph Rodrigues last November. That's
my newest hobby. I just got my yellow belt and
  it's something I plan on

[Goanet] Parrikar gets the stick from tiatrists - timesofindia.com

2013-08-04 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Parrikar gets the stick from tiatristsMarcus Mergulhao, TNN | Aug 4, 2013,
04.48 AM IST2comments1inShareShare MoreAA
PANAJI: Just like in his tiatr, Mariano Fernandesdid not name the offender, but
the message was loud and clear.Freedom of speech and expression is being
suppressed by top-level officials who have threatened to shut down my show,
Mariano screamed in one advertisement for 'Apunn Apleak Dev Somestank', his
latest offering that ran to a packed house. In his tiatr, Mariano is critical of
the state government and its policies, and even though the central character is
only referred to as Minister-who holds the education portfolio and wears
short-sleeved shirts-the target, unless you are oblivious to what is happening
around, is clearlychief minister Manohar Parrikar.Parrikar gets lambasted all
through the tiatr; in most scenes and songs actually. He is called several
things, vanshel (bear), Hitler (needs no explanation) and a devil with two
large horns, amongst others. But the most cruel blow, as always, is delivered
by Francis de Tuem who drags a replica of a two-faced snake on stage, of course
with Parrikar's face plastered on it.Lawry Travasso, one of Goa's topmost
singers, also tears into Parrikar insisting, We know just how much you love
the Catholics, while Francis de Tuem declares, One year after becoming chief
minister, Goans know who you are.In the same song, Francis de Tuem, who has
made a name for himself by cutting politicians to size, makes a significant
point. I was the only one who criticized you (in the past), he sings, as the
crowd listens in rapt attention. The firebrand singer has a point. Last year,
most tiatrists were eating out of Parrikar's hand, singing praises and
ridiculing the then extremely corrupt government, championed by Digambar Kamat.
It's an unspoken truth but Parrikar, to a large extent, rode piggyback on the
tiatrists, especially in Catholic-dominated constituencies of South Goa.Now, as
Parrikar gets caught in a web of promises and the cry to save Dabolim only gets
louder, the honeymoon seems to be over.Parrikar has forgotten everything. We
will show him his place (now), Junior Nelson sang in Constantino Crasto's hit
tiatr 'Amchem Chintop Tumchem Xinkop'.The crowd enjoys the Parrikar bashing and
most singers are called back at least twice on stage. If you are Francis de
Tuem and lambasting the chief minister, the whistles and applause simply grow
louder. The tiatrists-clearly incensed by Mopa, the recent meat ban, the Vasco
schoolgirl rape case, casinos, law and order issues-are making bold predictions
as well. Junior Nelson, an influential singer from Vasco, vowed to quit singing
if the BJP could bag the South Goa Parliamentary seat in next year's elections.
Lawry Travasso claimed the Congress were better and Tony de Ribandar felt it
would be difficult for Parrikar to complete his five-year term as chief
minister.Parrikar is not oblivious to the criticism from tiatrists. Last week,
he accepted an invitation to attend the Gulab Awards, amongst others, for
tiatrists, and left just before a political singer was to take the
stage.Parrikar may well have saved himself the embarrassment but there is still
no escaping. Hell hath no fury like a tiatrist scorned!

[Goanet] WILL THE DOCTOR’S PRESCRIPTION WORK?

2013-08-04 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Right to Information Act was enacted to ensure transparency and
accountability in public life. The State Information Commission plays a
crucial role, as a watch dog to oversee and ensure the proper
implementation of the Act.

Sadly over the last 17 months the manner in which Chief Minister Manohar
Parikar has gone about trying to hand pick his Information Commissioners it
has only been mired by repeated controversies. After the Pandurang Nadkarni
and Pradeep Padwal fiasco we are now encountered with the Sandesh
Prabhudesai saga.

The Right to Information Act mandates that the State Information
Commissioner shall be a person “of eminence in public life with wide
knowledge and experience in law, science and technology, social service,
management, journalism, mass media or administration and governance”.

The Goa Government on 4th May issued an advertisement calling for
applications/ recommendations for post of Chief Information Commissioner
and only one post of State Information Commissioner. The deadline to submit
the applications was 25th May.

On 24th May, my friend Dr Oscar Rebello submitted a letter recommending the
name of Sandesh Prabhudesai for the post of State Information Commissioner.
Knowing Dr.Oscar Rebello’s command over English, a bare diagnosis of that
now controversial letter recommending Sandesh Prabhudesai’s name indicates
that the same was surely not drafted by him. So did Dr Oscar Rebello merely
sign on the dotted line?

The cryptic bio data of Sandesh Prabhudesai which Dr Oscar Rebello claims
he has himself complied has been injected with loose, vague and
non-specific statements beginning with non-committal phrases such as:
Actively worked with in;  Involved in; Associated with;Participated in;
Associated in;   Played Active role in;

Interestingly the biodata does not mention any dates, and neither encloses
any certificates or other supporting documents. It does not state as to how
Sandesh Prabhudesai has the required ‘eminence in public life’. More
importantly the bio data is curiously mute on Sandesh Prabhudesai’s
educational qualifications.

Though after his selection Sandesh Prabhudesai has officially not said a
word, he has been privately saying that the advertisement did not require
the educational qualification to be indicated.

I hope that in his quest to grab the post, Sandesh Prabhudesai has at least
read the advertisement properly. It specifically requires the full details
of your bio data. There can never be a doubt whatsoever that one’s
educational qualification is the foundation and a very integral part of the
biodata. Not to suggest that Sandesh Prabhudesai does not have a
proficient educational qualification but the only concern is that it has
mysteriously not been incorporated in the biodata.

In this whole episode however, the most intriguing symptom, is that if he
was so keen on the post and felt that he was well qualified for it why did
Sandesh Prabhudesai himself not apply. Last year even some retired High
Court Judges had the humility and sent in their applications with their bio
data for the same post.

Any recommendation letter unsigned by the applicant himself is a document
which holds no responsibility of truth or accountability. If tomorrow, one
or more of the claims made in such a recommendation are challenged or found
to be untrue, the applicant can merrily wash off his hands by stating he
never made such a claim. Who, then, would be responsible for the falsehood?
….The person who recommended…. Dr. Oscar Rebello ??.

We have never heard of any application for a post, pursuant to an
advertisement being made by a recommendation and not by the candidate
himself. A mere recommendation by itself is necessarily invalid. The
applicant for any post can certainly request respected members of society
to recommend him but such recommendations can only accompany his signed
application.

Sandesh Prabhudesai is no doubt at his best in organizing television
programmes. I have enjoyed being part of so many over the years. But the
job of State Information Commissioner is something much more beyond and
serious. You have to be writing judgments after adjudicating on a very
evolving law, the Right to Information act. Any challenge against an order
passed by the State Information Commissioner lies directly to the High
Court.

If Manohar Parrikar finds himself under so much of pressure to find Sandesh
Prabhudesai a job, the Chief Minister could accommodate him as his Press
Information or Public Relations Officer. I am sure Sandesh Prabhudesai
would excel in such a post.

I am sure Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has by now realized his error in
creating an extra post of State Information Commissioner to accommodate
Sandesh Prabhudesai. I hope in his current bid to cover up the
illegalities, he at least seeks the much needed legal advice of the Law
department. The appointment of the State Information Commissioner is done
by the Governor, who I am sure like Dr Oscar

[Goanet] More evidence falsifying revisionist history

2013-08-04 Thread Santosh Helekar
I have already shown with quotes of da Orta that Fr. Ferrao's claim that the
word Hindu as an identifier of people belonging to a religion distinct from
Islam and Christianity did not exist in 16th century Goa, is bogus. I provide
below further evidence that this word with the said connotation did exist in
common usage even in the 15th century in India. Here is a translated poem of
Kabir (1440 - 1518 C.E.) containing this word, the connotation of which should
be clear from the context, as in the case of the da Orta quote:

QUOTE
Gorakh! Gorakh!
cries the Jogi
Ram! Ram!
says the Hindu.
Allah is One
proclaims the Muslim.
But...
My Lord pervades all.
The god of Hindus resides in a temple;
The god of Muslims resides in a mosque.
Who resides there
Where there are no temples
Nor mosques?

[Goanet] Jose Pereira the only Goan at Wimbledon Olympics - thegoan.net

2013-08-04 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Jose Pereira, the only Goan to have officiated at Wimbledon and Olympics, is
longing to see the state nurture tennis talent 03 August 2013Football and Goa,
lots to write about. Tennis and Goa, not much. Tennis academies in Goa, even
less. Government support for Tennis, absolutely nothing to write about. That’s
the state of tennis in Goa. But despite these conditions, the state does have
some aces up its sleeves.Natasha Palha, the upcoming Goan player on the ITF
Women's circuit, is an ace well known, a top ten player in India. Jose (Joseph)
Pereira, another tennis celebrity, but not that familiar in the circuit though.
He has been to the Olympics, Wimbledon and many first tier tennis
championships, but Pereira is not a player. He is an ITF certified White Badge
official (Chair umpire, Referee and Line umpire).Hailing from a quaint village
in Tivim, Pereira in his early fifties is the only Goan ever to officiate at
the Olympics and Wimbledon and probably one of the few NRIs in the world to
hold a White Badge as he got his certification done in Qatar where he is
employed as a technician with the Ministry of Municipality and Urban
Planning.“Going to Wimbledon and the London Olympics was like a dream come true
for me,” revealed the umpire who flew down to Goa on a holiday after
officiating at Wimbledon last month. He was the chair umpire for the ITF Junior
championship, LTA, Wild card and Junior qualifiers at Roehampton, UK, while a
line umpire for the Men’s and Women’s Qualifiers at Wimbledon. He also
officiated at the ITF Futures in Manchester during the same period.“I have
chaired for top players from Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Pat Cash
and has been the line official for most men and women players in the world,”
said the father for three who rates the Wimbledon experience as his best. “I
was the first official to get selected into the main draw from the qualifiers.
It never happens. One has to officiate for 5 to 6 years in the qualifiers to
move to the main draw. Only 8 officials from around 250 move up and I felt
highly honoured.”Having chaired over 1000 international matches and an equal
number of other matches, Periera’s entry into the sport was rather unusual. He
was not a tennis player but a footballer like most Goans. He played in all the
local leagues in Qatar and his forte was the defence position. But things
changed in 1993. “I went to watch the Qatar Open in 1993 and while the games
were going on I was wondering what it could take to be a line umpire. A few
days later I noticed an advertisement in the local daily calling for people to
be line umpires for the following year’s tournament. I applied and was given a
short course by ATP officials on line umpiring.” Four years down the line, on
March 27, 1997, Pereira was awarded the ITF White Badge representing Qatar
Tennis Federation.Making a transition from football to tennis, though, was not
that easy for him. “After I became an official, I thought I should learn
tennis, so I started taking training session with a top Davis Cup Player from
Philippines living in Qatar, and have been playing ever since,” disclosed
Pereira who now conducts coaching classes for young players in Qatar. For the
records, his last football match was in 2000 in the Qatar Expatriate League,
which mean tennis is his new found passion.“I love officiating. It’s my
passion. I get a lot of opportunity to take up coaching, but I prefer the
chair,” he said adding that Goa has a long way to go if it needs to be a
contender in the sport. “Goa needs atleast 5 tennis courts to start with. We
have a top player like Natasha in Goa and we don’t even have a single public
court. It’s a shame. I do not know what the government plan is for the National
Games next year, but they will need good standard tennis courts like those in
Bangalore,” urged Pereira whose son Joshua was the runners-up in the U-10 All
Goa tennis tournament last year.“The sad part is that Goa is far behind other
states in India in tennis facilities. My son has to come all the way from Tivim
to Hotshots Academy, Miramar to be trained under Valentine D’Silva. I hope the
National Games next year in Goa will give the state a few good tennis courts. I
am willing to render my full administrative support, if I am approached to do
so.”“If facilities are made available in Goa, it could become India’s best
tennis venues, because all tennis players love to come to Goa. India has over
36 weeks of international tennis annually, some of which could be played in
Goa,” said the international ITF official who dreams of having more tennis
players from Goa in the years to come.Wimbledon and Olympics, what’s next? “I
have a lot of scope in India, if I retire from Qatar. In the meanwhile I will
continue officiating,” Pereira answers while enjoying the Goan monsoons.

mentioned in Theresa Albuquerque's book on Kenya Goans; he came to Nairobi

He was the first President of the Tailor's Society Nairobi. The Portuguese

 Antonio,
Goan tailors in E. Africa were held in high esteem by their customers. In
Tanzania those customers included President Nyerere. The only people who,
deliberately, tried to lessen the status of Goan tailors, were their fellow
 Konkani speakers, Goans.

This was (is?) because of the peculiar type of Christianity practiced by
Goans. A practice where tailors, and carpenters, and I guess any other
occupation that is out of favor, are given 'special status.'

Thankfully, soon after independence in 1961, the Tanzanian Govt insisted
that clubs end their religious and racial barrier policies. By the
mid-1970's the clubs in Tanzania had admitted all the tailors who had
 applied for membership.

One night at the tiatr

Saturday, Aug 3, 2013, 23:03 IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA
Joanna Lobo

This Konkani art form was born in Mumbai and 121 years later still finds
enthusiasts willing to create space for it in their lives, finds Joanna Lobo

A tiatr performance - DNA

Scene 1: Curtains go up. Enter stage left.

A young man in a black suit is testing the mic. The audience, that has
braved non-stop rain, flooded roads and frustrating traffic for this show,
egg him on. In a few minutes the problem is sorted and the performer breaks
into song. He finishes, the curtains rise and there’s a family on stage in
the middle of a dispute. There's a hush now. The uncomfortable seats of
Parel’s Damodar Hall start creaking as people settle in for the three-hour
long tiatr — Prince Jacob Productions’ Pap Tujem Prachit Mhojem (Your sin,
my repentance).

The tiatr (a stage drama/musical in Konkani), completes 121 years this
year. Tiatrs are doing good business in Goa, where they are staged
throughout the year. In Mumbai, the birthplace of this theatre form, it’s a
different story. Only a handful of tiatrs are staged now, most of which
come from Goa. Among these few, productions by Prince Jacob are the most
looked forward to.

Scene 2: Two brothers dressed in tailcoats and fake, twirly moustaches
saunter on stage and start singing.

Prince Jacob, born Miguel Jacob Carmo Luis Fernandes, is best known for his
humour, his ability to portray different (sometimes, female) characters and
his singing. He and his brother Humbert Fernandes have been working
together for 29 years and are a well-known comedy act; their performances
always end with calls for encores.

Backstage at the Prince Jacob show, the man in question is a complete
change from his on stage persona, all calm and collected. “I plan all my
tiatrs a year in advance so that people know what to expect. I am honoured
that whenever I perform here, I still get a good response,” he says.

“People will flock to a Prince Jacob production without any questions. If
it's an unknown director, there will be hundreds of doubts — where has he
performed before, what is the story about, who is singing?,” says Kenneth
(Kenny) Zuzarte, a singer who is best known for his female portrayal of
roles.

One of the reasons behind Prince Jacob’s popularity is the fact that the
troupe can be found in Mumbai twice a year — in January and in July.

It’s a similar story with Roseferns (Antonio Rosario Fernandes). In June,
the tiatrist recently staged seven shows of Waiter , his 75th production,
in Mumbai and Pune. “There are people watching tiatrs and youngsters are
keen on joining it. Tiatr is not dying anytime soon,” he says.

Scene 3: A side act references Mumbai, making fun of the Bombay-accented
Konkani spoken here and the way girls in Parel walk.

Tiatr has a long and illustrious history in Mumbai, the city of its birth.
The first tiatr Italian Bhurgo was staged on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1892,
at the New Alfred Theatre. Tiatrs were staged at Princess Theatre,
Bhangwadi (now shut), Mazgaon, St Mary’s Church, Byculla, Rang Bhavan and
the Birla Theatre opposite Bombay Hospital. They were frequented by people
who lived in the numerous kudds or clubs spread mostly across south Bombay.
A few actors were brought from Goa but the tiatrs were produced by Goans
working in Mumbai.

Eugene Correia has attended around 70-100 tiatrs in the 70s — he would
review them for the Free press Journal bulletin. “I would watch one every
week. My reviews were quite critical and didn’t go down well with
everyone,” he says. Correia could usually be found at Kayani’s at Kalbadevi
which was a popular haunt for tiatrists.

Today, the base has shifted to Goa, and getting a tiatr in Mumbai is an
expensive proposition. The publicity is usually word of mouth, sometimes an
announcement is made in advance at churches and flyers are handed out at
certain clubs and church events. The Goan Tiatr Academy gives financial aid
of Rs 30,000 to every tiatr that has a minimum five shows.

The productions from Goa have to figure out their own food and lodging and
travel. There are a few halls in Bandra, Matunga, Parel and Borivli that
open their doors to tiatrists, but first preference is given to local
talent. “It’s very expensive,” admits Roseferns. “We have to organise our
own shows, provide lodging, food and transport. If we get a good crowd then
it’s ok, else it is risky.”

In suburban areas of Bombay, Goan tiatrists and others organise a few
shows. When Kenny isn’t part of the audience, he works with the Maharashtra
Konkani Kala Sanstha (MKKS) to promote the Konkani language and culture.
The MKKS are currently practising for a show that will be staged on August
4. Titled Konnem Lailo Uzo (Who lit the fire), the production is a tribute
to the late director and one of the biggest names in tiatr, C Alvares.

Scene 4: The two brothers produce a side show about marriage and cars and
has the audience in splits

Dear Santosh,

Why must you always sound like a stuck record?

I think this is at least the eleventh if not the umpteenth time that you
have taken the da Orta quote to beat poor Rev Dr Ferrao's back, and this
after he quite generously conceded early enough, that there are different
versions of the meaning of Hinduism. And your rantings have been rather
boring to say the least.

Can't you understand that Victor's essential point is not primarily about
there being or not being Hinduism in the 17th century; but that the
Hinduism of those days was and is different from the Hinduism of today.

Hinduism has evolved over time. For instance what are described as the
Scheduled Castes and Tribes who would not have been described as being
Hindus and indeed would have been described as being untouchable in those
early times now are. And they can enter temples where they were once not
welcome.

And that although there are some things which persist over the ages, many
of the things for which Hindus are aggrieved about today because of what
happened centuries ago cannot be used to beat the descendants of those
times.

For instance the Inquisition cannot be used as a whip to beat today's
Christians because the Hindus of those times who suffered grievously were
exactly those Hindus who are today's Christians.

If you really want an education about the evolution of Hinduism which is
where Fr Ferrao is taking his arguments from please do a little homework:
You are welcome to read:

Beholden to the White Man. By Roland Francis

Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter 4 Aug 2013 at www.goanvoice.org.uk

Full Text:

As any school kid who has had the opportunity to study Indian history knows,
a very long time ago, going back four and five thousand years BC in what is
known as the Indian subcontinent today, there were the hallmarks of advanced
civilization the likes of which would come to Europe much later and to the
Americas even later than that. Even the Portuguese who came to the southern
part of the subcontinent twenty thousand years after those ancient
civilizations existed and to Goa a little after that, marvelled at the
riches, the lifestyle, the food and the general opulence of the population
driven by knowledge and industriousness. They were led by rulers who had the
wellbeing of their subjects, in a sort of democratic system but without its
failings which have proven all too common today. The only flaw in that Eden
was the desire of individual rulers to expand their territory which made
them a ripe target for Portuguese, Dutch, French and English ambition. These
European nations had little of the splendour of the natives but they had
what counted then as what counts today - superior arms, discipline and
strategies.

Fast forward to modern and contemporary times, say the nineteenth century
and later where the western hemisphere dominated and the rest of the world
became either their subjects, vassals or followers. Lets us concentrate on
Goa and Goans. Change came with the times. The wealth of Goa slowly eroded
and not entirely due to the Portuguese who themselves declined from a world
power to an insignificantly colonial one. However Goa being an agrarian
society because of the fertile land, the rivers and the monsoon, while other
lands suffered from drought and consequent hunger, remained self sufficient.
Elsewhere wars came, but in Goa and the rest of India there was peace thanks
to our foreign rulers. And thanks to Portuguese neutrality during the Great
Wars, Goa was spared even the minimal war-time deprivation that India under
the British could not avoid.

Goans prospered under the white man. Many of them may have been converted to
another religion against their will, but in return they were offered
education, music, good law and governance and many opportunities in trade,
mercantilism and administration to better themselves and their families.
This was not confined to the Catholic community alone - Hindus and Muslims
benefited too. For those whom prosperity bypassed, British East Africa
beckoned, followed by the Arab Gulf opportunity and England, Canada,
Australia and the United States in addition to those who made the mother
country Portugal their home. They all prospered under those conditions. For
such a small population, they made themselves felt in every endeavour they
undertook and in every society they lived. Those who did not excel lived
solid burgher lives; law abiding, education seeking, wealth accumulating and
just as industrious as Vasco da Gama must have found the subjects of Tipu
Sultan and the Cochin and Travancore Rajas on his trade trips there.

When the British left India and the Portuguese, Goa, there was great hope.
Both peoples had educated and trained leaders whose only interest was the
good of the country they governed. They had learned their lessons from the
Europeans well, often applying them in unique ways. Gandhi taught the world
non-violence, Goans the rest of India, trustworthiness and music. In Bombay
not too long ago, the word of a Goan and a Parsee was implicitly trusted.
Everyone else had to prove themselves. Freedom seemed a magic word. Somehow
it was taken to mean the antithesis of betrayal and it was going to make the
lands now freed of oppressors shine for all those who lived within it. Even
if it didn't shine quickly enough, the intentions were going to be
faultless.

The rot took a little while to set in, about 20 years, since the lessons
learned under the white men could not easily be burnished. And then with the
generations who learned them gone, thousands of years of civilization
notwithstanding, all the factors that take a country to greater heights have
been dropped by the wayside. India and Goa seem prosperous, but it is the
prosperity merely of the moment, like a large lottery won and quickly spent.
Take the recent words of the clever Finance Minister. He says he is looking
for ways to encourage more FDI as a means to prevent the freefall of the
Indian Rupee. That ship has sailed. A band-aid for the battle wound of
wastage, nepotism, corruption, crime and a thousand major failings that
instead of being addressed are being denied. The favourite argument remains
the same as from Indira Gandhi's time: It happens everywhere.

A good indication of India's and Goa's future is the ever increasing desire
of people to settle overseas despite the currently weak economies and
India's still strong showing. They have no faith in the

[Goanet] Mid-day meal in Goa

http://zeenews.india.com/news/goa/don-t-rope-in-iskcon-for-mid-day-meals-goa
-congress_866487.html

where the Congress Party in Goa says that ISKCON, through Akshay Patra
Foundation, should NOT be given the contract to supply mid-day meal to
schools in Goa. A Congress spokesman is reported as saying: Our local self
help groups should continue to be encouraged and not discarded in favour of
ISKCON. Their output should be checked.

The sentiments express regarding the local self-help groups is quite
laudable. Perhaps all the political parties can offer their volunteers to
help in this task, along with the other NGOs in Goa. I expect the Congress
party to take a lead in this effort. I am sure that the people of Goa will
be grateful to the party.

Today (August 4) I was reading the Indian Express, where there is an
informative story about Akshay Patra's kitchen in Jaipur, which is feeding
1.25 lakh school children in and around Jaipur. Given that the population
of Goa is around 14 lakhs, I think the number of children to be fed in
government schools would not be more than this number. So, Akshay Patra has
the capacity to undertake the project.

The story is available at:

 http://www.indianexpress.com/news/the-food-chain/1150776/0
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/the-food-chain/1150776/0

An interesting para in the story says:

QUOTE

Officials admit that the high standards of safety and quality come at a cost
and arranging funds has always been tough. Says R Govinda Dasa, president,
Akshay Patra Foundation, The government provides 100 gm of raw material
(wheat and rice) per primary student and 150 gm for upper primary students.
In addition Rs 3.67 is given as cooking charge for primary students and Rs 5
for the older students. The amount covers only 50 per cent of the cost per
student and the Foundation has to depend on donations from corporate houses
and individual donors for funds.

UNQUOTE

It would seem to me that Akshay Patra is providing quite a high quality of
food for the children, going beyond what the government has budgeted for.
If the model of Akshay Patra for both, the food and the collection of
donations from the society, can be replicated by others, it would seem that
there is an excellent option available to the children of Goa.

Prof Amartya Sen has rightly said that economic development can only go
forward if the people are healthy and educated. The Akshay Patra model
could well be the one that Prof Sen is looking for.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about the model, they can see a

Re: [Goanet] More evidence falsifying revisionist history

2013-08-04 Thread Santosh Helekar
Dear Augusto,

I am interested in an honest debate about the factual claims made by anybody
regarding Goan history in Goan cyberspace. I am not interested in trivial
platitudes such as Hinduism has evolved since the 16th century that even the
most uneducated of people in Goa take for granted. The factual claims of Fr.
Ferrao (which he has made in his latest convoluted Panorama article:
http://www.navhindtimes.in/panorama/complexities-healing-process) that I am
trying to find evidence for or against are the following:

1. But this statement appears to state the obvious that the term Hindu was a
geographical ascription based on the mis-pronouncement of the Indus river and
its civilization.  Hence, there are complexities about the term Hindu from the
semantic and referent point of view.
.Fr. Ferrao

2.  This is the reason also I had said with lot of thought and caution that
the temples that were destroyed do not belong to the Hinduism of today but
belong to the seminal Hinduism which for want of words, I used the terms
independent worship groups. The more correct word, at least in the context of
Goa would perhaps be ‘vangod’. In the 16th century did all the vangods of Goa
know or believe they were part of a pan-Indian Hinduism?
.Fr. Ferrao

I had asked you to provide evidence to support the various revisionist claims
of Fr. Ferrao. You were clearly unable to do so. It appears now that you are
getting irritated that I am doing the job of trying to fact-check these claims.
I noticed that, as part of your efforts to gloss over what was said in Fr.
Ferrao's article, you have recommended some book titles for me to read. Have
you read these books? Do you know if they provide evidence to support the above
two claims of Fr. Ferrao? I will let you know if they do or not (Please don't
get more irritated when I do this).

BTW, please note that Fr. Ferrao clearly wants to revise Goan history. Here is
a quote from his latest article that indicates this:

QUOTE
In view of the same I said the unsayable in our society. From the reaction of
what is said we might hear the unsaid in what has been so far said.  What is
unsaid is that we have no freedom to re-visit Goan history from the point of
view of some radical and revolutionary research.

Can't you understand that Victor's essential point is not primarily
 about
there being or not being Hinduism in the 17th century; but that the
Hinduism of those days was and is different from the Hinduism of today.

[Goanet] Believing in herself... and spreading happiness (by Remediana Dias)

2013-08-04 Thread Goanet Reader

She is respectful of her
traditions, values and culture and is not hidebound
  by them.

Writing, I love to write. I feel like I can be anything when

Writing for me is not only a job but it's a hobby.
When I am not messing about online I'm always

I read a lot too, mainly sci-fi and horror. I write and
compose music when I'm bored. I play the guitar, okay let me
rephrase that, I try to play guitar and sing. Unfortunately I
don't have place for a piano. That's something I miss a lot.

I love theater. I used to act with The Mustard Seed Art

pursue music. I would definitely love to get back to acting
if I got a chance to or more importantly if I get time. My

I game (mostly World of Warcraft). I spend a
ridiculous amount on Facebook. I watch a lot of

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 19th Sunday of the Year

2013-08-04 Thread Jude Botelho
2-Aug-2013

Dear Friend,

There are times when life seems great and wonderful and there are times when
life is confusing and meaningless. All of us experience conflicting and
contrasting emotions in our lives of faith. Do we live for the day believing in
good luck or bad luck, or do we live by faith and hold on to our hope? The one
who believes in God can look beyond the present and wait for the realization of
one's hope. Have a 'hope-filled' weekend evaluating our priorities!    Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: 19th Sunday of the Year: Faith is the realization of our
hope! Do we hope in God? 11-Aug-2013
Readings: Wisdom 18: 6-9Hebrews 11: 1-2, 8-19Luke 12: 32-48

The first reading taken from the book of Wisdom, was written for people who
were tempted to abandon their faith because of the secular attitudes of the
people with whom they came in contact The Book of Wisdom reminded the Jews of a
sign of faith and hope for all times: the feast of the Passover, which spelt
disaster for the Egyptians, who lost their first-born to the angel of death,
but was the night that brought deliverance to Israel, who believed in Yahweh.
The message is also for us who live in increasingly secular surroundings amidst
people who sometimes ridicule and challenge our faith and its practices. The
temptation is to behave so that we are considered modern in keeping with the
changing times and morals. Our faith will be tested but we are called to hold
on our God who will bring victory from apparent defeat.

Pray that I have clarity!
Long ago, when I spent a month working at the 'House of the Dying' in Calcutta,
I sought a sure answer to my future. On the first morning I met Mother Teresa
after mass at dawn. She asked, And what can I do for you? I asked her to pray
for me. What do you want me to pray for? I voiced the request I had borne
thousands of miles: Pray that I have clarity. She said No. That was that.
When I asked why, she answered that clarity was the last thing I was clinging
to and had to let go of. When I commented that she herself had always seemed to
have the clarity I longed for, she laughed: I never have had clarity; what
I've always had is trust. So I will pray that you have trust.
John Kavanaugh

The Gospel of today has several messages that we could find applicable to our
daily lives. Firstly, it reminds us that we have nothing to fear if we have
come to know and discover that God is our Father. If we are worried and afraid
it is because we doubt whether God is in charge and can manage our lives!
Secondly, we are asked what our real treasure is. Jesus says, Where your
treasure is there will be your heart also. What do we value most in our
lives? The Gospel asks us: Is our treasure the treasure that will not fail us?
The gospel gives us two little parables to illustrate what attitudes we need to
inculcate in our daily lives. The first attitude is to be ready and prepared at
all times, like servants waiting for the master to return from the wedding
feast. Life is full of moments of waiting and we easily tend to get bored and
loose interest in the one we are waiting for. We also know from our own life
experiences that we are ready to wait for a
long time for those we love.  The last parable in today's gospel gives us an
example of the steward who is asked to manage his master's affairs. He can
either be diligent and responsible in fulfilling his duties or he can believe
that he is the boss and so he can lord it over the others and generally have a
good time, feasting and getting drunk. We are that steward whom the Master has
given charge over the household of our life. We can go through life believing
that everything we have is a gift from God or we can believe that we have
earned everything and deserve everything.  We have a choice to make: to be
responsible and accountable to God: Lord I am ready and willing to walk in
faith, even when I cannot see clearly. or to postpone that choice to a later
date. Jesus spoke of watching through the night. Faith demands staying in
vigilance throughout the night until the dawn arrives. There is no need to be
afraid of the dark night of faith. God is
there in the night. Watching through the night is part of the life of faith.

Floriano was thankful to me for giving him an opportunity to clarify the
Raaj part. In return I thank him for spelling it out, though
unconvincingly. As general secretary/spokesperson, he shouldn't hold back
the name of the UK representative. Or, deny if there isn't any
representative.

A party that projects a clean image of itself shouldn't shy away from
letting the people on this forum know the person's name. I'm just surprised
why Floriano is withholding the information.

Dear Eugene,

You must stop killing yourself 'softly' on the 'extra a' in the Raj
There are other more potent poisons if you need to go fast track.

Ooops
It should be Raj and NOT Raaj in the line below from my earlier post.

As far as I know Hindi, Raaj meaning governance or rule in Hindi has no
two aa,

composed by Herminia da Veiga Lourenco Estebeiro)
Manohar Parrikar says Salcette loves him. This mando composed by a Xaxti couple
years ago, should be music to his ears. The Mood of Goa survey gives the Chief
Minister a backing across most parameters of governance. Yet this is a region
which is reeling the heaviest due to the mining ban, blames him for his
pro-Mopa airport stand and his inaction on the Regional Plan. To get a drift of
why he stills leads in Salcette, read and hear the last line of the mando.
There is no one else. Yet.Salcette – The land of extremes. The middle path is
for those across the bridge. It is here that moderation takes a back seat as
everything from food to gram sabhas to full throated agitations swing from
black to white, but never grey.Manohar Parrikar is basking in those two
colours. The five constituencies of South Goa covered in The Goan-Nielsen Mood
of Goa survey went to Benaulim and Curtorim, two very good picks for tapping
the Salcette mood and it’s clearly this, as the Mando we have picked to
describe Xaxti’s passion – “Besides you, there is nobody else”.The Chief
Minister has felt the love pangs. He told The Goan, reacting to the findings of
the survey (see interview on page 3), “Salcette is in love with me”.For sure.
“In the last government eight ministers including the Chief Minister were from
Salcete. Despite the many assurances from Parrikar and some U-turns it’s not a
surprise that Salcete people are happy with Parrikar,” said Trevor Pinto, an
accounts professor from Salcete.A group of villagers from Benaulim camping in
MLA Caitu’s office to get their works passed where quite confident that no
government in Goa will be able to provide them a solution to garbage. The
Congress meanwhile is in hibernation mode. Most of the heavy weight losers from
the South like Aleixio Sequeira, Damu Naik, Joaquim Alemao and few others feel
that this Assembly is very stable and will last its entire tenure. They
therefore don’t see a need to make an appearance in their respective
constituencies until 2015 as the next election is scheduled only in
2017.“Congress heavyweights, Churchill and Joaquim Alemao, Philip Neri
Rodrigues and Aleixio Sequeira feel it’s a waste of time to step out and do
people contact. It’s better to stick to the new lot of Benjamin, Caitu, Mickky
and Rajan Naik since they are part of this government,” said Jayant Naik, a
resident from Majorda-Utorda. Salcete gives its MLAs lots of time to perform,
he added. But in what is quintessentially Salcette, every love story has a
twist.Margao’s Alison Morenas says the parivartan government has not protected
the heritage and ancient structures of Goa’s commercial city.“The old municipal
building is coming up for demolition. Builders are replacing old heritage
structures with new buildings while the authorities give permission to pull
down these building, which is utterly unfair,” Morenas said. Here again, this
reflects The Goan-Nielson Mood of Goa survey which mapped what irks Goans. And
a tad surprisingly, after garbage, the failure to protect and promote heritage
showed a satisfaction level of just 14%, one of the lowest among 25 top issues
which irk Goans (see page 4 of The Goan anniversary issue, July 27) This is
where this romance becomes interesting. It is Salcette and by stretching it to
parts of Cortalim and Verna, which demanded that the regional plan be made open
to the public, which rose against the manner of land acquisition at Mopa and
backed a movement by father Eremito Rebelo against Mopa and for maintaining the
Dabolim airport. But Salcette has had a disappointing tryst with the past which
forced them to give Parrikar the mandate he got. This isn’t quite the time for
chance. It doesn’t come easy. But as The Goan moved through homes in villages,
it got one refrain. This is a Goa which is not sitting back. Every day and in
every which way people are taking stock of a government they have created. They
expect access, transparency and delivery. If the Chief Minister is at a traffic
junction and looking at the traffic lights, he can bask in the glow of the
green but it’s the yellow light he should watch out for. It can turn either way
to green or red. For the moment though, the Parrikar vehicle can pass in
Salcette.
