[Goanet] Celebrating The Return Of Something Beautiful ~ Vocalist Lori Jenaire Performs At Blues Alley!
(http://www.lorijenaire.com) (http://www.bluesalley.com) A Note to our members: Lori Jenaire has been a good friend to The Jazz Network Worldwide since its inception. She recently underwent vocal chord surgery and was told that she couldn't speak for a significant amount of time to achieve a successful healing. I had the opportunity to witness her strength and dignity as she was shut off to the world in spoken word form and witnessed her perservance to 'stay the course'. I asked Lori what that experience was like for her... The procedure was to remove a benign growth from my vocal chords that had prevented me from singing for almost a year, the time I spent in recovery without the ability to speak was transformative on many levels - most importantly how our inner world informs the world around usone can't bring peace if they don't have it...reverence for the word and it's effect on others will forever change my intent when singing and communicating. The above engagement is her 'first time back to the stage since her voice was silenced. The Jazz Network Worldwide wants to acknowledge the 'hard road' conquered and the new found freedom of song that sits so confidently in her heart. Bravo Mz. Jenaire, we stand behind your melodic movements in song and may your voice always be the bridge to telling your story the way only you can do! [Goanet] Catholic Goans Don't Look Like Their Names. By Savio Carvalho
Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter 20 Oct. 2013 at www.goanvoice.org.uk A few years ago, when I had just taken over as the Country Director for Oxfam GB in Uganda, I had gone to pay a courtesy call to a Minister in the Ugandan government. On arrival, the ministers Personal Assistant (PA) asked me. So, where is Mr Carvalho? When I introduced myself as Savio Carvalho, (by which time we have walked to the Ministers chamber) the PA admitted that he was expecting a middle aged, white man, a bit stouter (I think he wanted to say pot-bellied) and in a three piece suit. This was the typical profile of Oxfam Country Directors in yesterdays, which is no longer true. He was intrigued to see a young man with Indian features and in semi-formal attire. Sounds familiar? Such episodes are experienced some time or the other by most Catholic Goans. You are going to meet someone you have never met before. They are expecting to see the person (say Savio Carvalho) with a name that is anything but Indian and they have already had an image of you. You arrive, they see you, they look confused and on some occasions ignore your presence - as they are waiting for that person (Savio Carvalho) whose image they have created based on the name. And they are sure that Mr Carvalho could be an Italian, Brazilian, Portuguese and but surely not an Indian. And after you introduce yourself, they are intrigued, puzzled and wait anxiously to get to the bottom of the story. Sometimes you are asked immediately, or at times they wait sheepishly to ask, So what's in your name? Where are you from? And you promptly reply Goa And they then smile, and their brain cells collide with each other trying to make sense of what seemed bizarre, incomprehensible and at times embarrassing. Over the years, crossing many immigrations points, working in 3 different continents and meeting a wide range of people, I can go on and on with anecdotes and stories on how my name and my features have led to intriguing situations. So what does it mean to have a name that does not tally with your features? It may at times cause some identify problems. It could also raise existential questions on who am I, what is my identity, where do I come from? You may recall the case of Berna Cruz (http://bit.ly/19V9S1i )who was detained at Chicago's O'Hare Airport as the officers accused her of using a fake Canadian passport and to make matters worse did not believe a person of Indian origin could have the surname Cruz. Many a time I do take the trouble of explaining my origins - explaining how we were colonised by the Portuguese, converted to Catholicism and for centuries now, have an identity of ourselves as Goans. I try and explain how our culture, cuisine, dress sense, music and way of life differ from the rest of India. I go on to explain that we are in some way westernised and have embraced bits and pieces from the Portuguese, whilst on the other hand, we have also retained parts of the Indianess like caste stratification. For centuries this practice has continued even in the shadow of the Catholic Church. The best part of my identity I like to explain and emphasise is our susegad nature. Whist other civilisations are struggling with a work-life balance, I strongly feel that Goans have a unique edge to start some programmes on How to live a susegad life. I am sure they will do well in countries like Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. But to do this we have to work hard. Whilst many of these occasions are humorous, there is something to ponder from such experiences. Being profiled on the basis of something like a name or surname can be discriminatory. Many a times, in India, people face discrimination due to their caste, gender, and religion, sexual identity regions and even in based on physical appearance. Discrimination in any form is a human rights violation. The Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR) in its first article says that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and right. However, many a time people are denied job interviews or a place to rent based on their surnames. There have been several cases where a person who applied for the same job with a different surname have been invited or refused an interview. So let's be conscious that profiling a person based on his / her name can be discriminatory. As Goans, we need to be appreciative of our names and surnames. Other than revealing the fact that we are from the west coast of India (Goa or Mangalore), most us belong to a certain religion and have a definite culture and it is difficult to get any other information from the surname. You can be a D'Souza, Fernandes or D'Costa, a Carvalho, Pinto or Vaz - It's all the same! You are Goan, and the most common discrimination you will face (specially in Mumbai) is being called a Maka Pao. Savio Carvalho, Director of the Demand Dignity Programme, Amnesty International, International Secretariat is based in London. He was born in Goa and spent

To be recognized as a specialist in the field of Psychiatry in India a physician has to have a postgraduate degree or diploma in this discipline. A qualified modern psychiatrist also tends to be highly sensitive and respectful towards his/her patients. He/she takes great pains to guard their dignity, given the fact that mental illness still suffers from medieval ignorance, stigma and prejudice among the general populace. Therefore, it would never be in keeping with his/her professional ethics to use a psychiatric diagnosis as an epithet or swear word in a public forum or even in a private conversation, for that matter. [Goanet] On Mining
This message is in response to Vivian A. DSouza's message to me. I hope Vivian will agree with me that 'Questions are asked when one does not know the answer or to get clarifications.' With this simple logic I had asked a simple question! And Vivian is drifting my simple question to a non-ending complex discussion level. Nevertheless let me partake in his discussion! Now, let me first ask Vivian a very simple question: Does my simple and only question in any way EXTOLL the jobs created by mining as is aligned by you? Fact is my simple question is misinterpreted and twisted to suite Vivian's answers! My question was: 'After reading this article, I wonder how many jobs have been created by those who are objecting to mining.' Secondly, does Vivian have the exact answer to the counter question posed to me? Vivian's question was: - 'for every job created by mining, how many farmers were deprived of their jobs and livelihood?' I have no exact answer for this! This may be because neither Goa government nor central government has ever published such data! Hope you have the required data to share i. e. exact number of farmers who are deprived of their jobs and livelihood in Goa along with their locations. Awaiting factual data from Vivian to advance this discussion to 1+ level and while answering please don't change the subject line as was done by you this time (your message appended here below.) U. Encroaching on protected forests.? My question to U. G. Barad is? - for every job created by mining, how many farmers were deprived of their jobs and livelihood? ?? One only had to travel to the areas devastated by mining with major arterial roads past Ponda, choked with mining trucks in their thousands some coming back to the mines to reload while others loaded with iron ore headed to Murmugao, to get a feel for the devastation that was inflicted on Goa.? Normal traffic could not get by in this massive gridlock of huge mining trucks driven by non-Goans. Fields and water bodies were contaminated, water springs destroyed, the entire countryside coated with dust from mining activities and truck traffic. Our fair land was pillaged and raped. It took a Supreme court order to put a stop to this madness. Now it is time to book all those who indulged in illegal mining and the netas who permitted them to do so.? In time mining will resume, hopefully in a sustainable manner.
[Goanet] Killing Goa's golden tourism goose (VM - TOI)
Killing Goa's golden tourism goose Vivek Menezes, TNN Oct 19, 2013, 01.38AM IST Even just 20 years ago, nothing and nobody could have predicted Goa's incredible tourism boom. Though the first 5-star hotels opened for business as far back as the 1970s, and the first charter flights started to land in the 1980's, the state's famously laid back character remained intact, the beaches still shimmered pristine, and garbage was nowhere to be seen. But sussegad no more, it has been breakneck growth ever since. In 1985, the state still hosted just 7,00,000 visitors, almost all from the rest of India. Even in the fateful millennium year of 2000-when Goa suddenly emerged into global consciousness as a hedonistic playground-total tourist arrivals comprised just over 1 million. Then the tourism tsunami commenced. By 2003 that number had already doubled to 2 million. A scant decade later Goa anticipates its most lucrative tourism season ever, with well over 3 million arrivals, perhaps as many as 3.3 million. Our little state is one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the world. We know none of this has happened because of proper planning, and careful development, or any kind of mature responsibility demonstrated by either state authorities or the private sector. Instead tourism in Goa has benefitted constantly from extraneous factors-plummeting airfares worldwide, massive growth in India's internal tourism market, the Konkan railway and deregulation of the domestic airline sector. Actually, the most significant advantage the state's tourism sector has enjoyed is sheer blind luck as regional rivals have one by one undergone severe setbacks, ranging from tsunami to civil war. In fact, as every Goan knows, the state's once legendary charms and sheer physical beauty has actually been criminally degraded over these same two decades of non-stop tourism growth. Incompetent state management combined with irresponsible local authorities combined with an outstandingly selfish, shameless set of operators has created nothing short of garbage-strewn mayhem on the beach belt, now stretching far into the interior. But still the tourists come, in greater and greater numbers. As many as 1,400 charter flights will link Goa to the west this year, and an unstoppable flow continues from the rest of India. But now there are unmistakable signs that an environmental tipping point has been reached, which will have undoubted consequences for the future. The latest Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report carries a severe warning that the entire tourism sector faces eventual death due to degradation of beaches, widespread violations of coastal regulation zones, severely depleted groundwater across the state (but especially on the coast), as well as a total lack of sewerage and solid waste management. So we see that Goa's tourism industry has been outrageously irresponsible towards its own greatest assets, and it is killing off its golden goose at high speed. It is not just the beaches. The CAG report also warns that pressure on river Mandovi-the lifeline of Goa's identity and culture-is increasing daily, but no study has been taken to ascertain its carrying capacity. Earlier this week, the Goa State Pollution Control Board reiterated the warning in its latest inspection report, stating that the deeply unpopular offshore casinos have comprehensively failed to comply with conditions stipulated to them to operate under water and air acts. Here it is useful to remember that the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) had already condemned most of the coastal waters and rivers across Goa as highly contaminated due to unchecked sewage dumping, as far back as 2011. Senior researchers at the NIO then stated the level of fecal coliform bacteria in several popular beach areas, as well as the Mandovi off Panaji, was already nearly double acceptable norms, making them unfit for swimming. Just imagine what those levels will be now, with the casinos on steroids, becoming ever-more offensively gargantuan, and the state's tourism traffic going up by 20% or more each year. What can the future be for a beach destination where you risk your health by entering the water? Of course none of these warnings and projections are exactly new to either state or private sector leaders. They know exactly what is going on, just as everyone knew exactly what was going on when the mining sector went haywire with multi-billion dollar illegalities, or indeed the real estate illegalities now spreading unchecked across the entire state. We already know Goa has the most irresponsible elites anywhere. The difference is that the average tourist has still not learned of the health risks they face in visiting Goa, or indeed that their hard-earned money supports a sector busily destroying a much-beloved state. When that happens-as it inevitably will-the goose will finally be cooked.

[Goanet] JUDGES SOCIALISING WITH ADVOCATES UNDESIRABLE
Despite there being a very clear and categorical diktat by the Supreme Court that judges should not socialize with advocates, there seems no rigorous compliance of this very salutary prescription. Just because Goa is a holiday destination, does it mean that it should be exempt from this much required norm? Official Tea parties within the High Court premises could be okay. But highly spirited dinner parties, hosted at starred hotels, are another story: a potential avenue for Advocates to creep and cultivate convenient relations with Judges. It can also lead to funny, embarrassing and demeaning situations at times. There was one such gala dinner at a Panaji Hotel, last Friday. The centerpiece of the function was that, midway through the dinner, one Senior Advocate who reportedly went way above the breathalyzer’s permissible limits had to be escorted home limping by another Senior Advocate who seemed to be somewhat more steady. It must have been a bumpy ride. The next day being a working Saturday for the High Court, one wonders how the hangover was taken care of. Recently circulated amongst the legal fraternity in Goa was an anonymous letter addressed to the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court with a copy endorsed to each of the 55 Bombay High Court judges. The letter pertains to the farewell dinner accorded on August 18th this year at Panaji to a retiring High Court judge. A perusal of this well articulated crispy letter reveals that it was not drafted by any Tom, Dick and Harry. It is however saddening that the author did not have the courage to reveal his name and chose to sign as ‘the Concerned Citizen’. The many ills our society faces today is because we are not ready to speak up the hard facts and stick our neck. The contact between Advocates and judges should be restricted to the Court room. This would go a long way in ensuring an independent, unbiased, free and fair Judiciary. Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372

[Goanet] Featured This Week: From Japan ~ Vocalist Geila Zilkha Day Dreaming
(http://www.geilajazz.com) (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/day-dreaming/id679627698) (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/day-dreaming/id679627698)Geila Zilkha is a successful and highly recognized singer in Japan. With a solid background in jazz and additional essence of strong soul music, her vocal performances delight the audiences’ ears and hearts wherever she sings. Born and raised in Kobe to an Israeli father and Japanese mother, Geila attended the international school Canadian Academy from kindergarten through high school and is fluent in both English and Japanese. She showed a strong interest in the arts and music from an early age, and studied ballet from the age of three. When Geila was nine years old, she was diagnosed with scoliosis and underwent surgery during which a metal rod was implanted in her back. This operation meant that she could no longer dance or play sports, and ever since then Geila knew that she would pursue a career in music. Soon after the operation, Geila began learning how to play the alto saxophone. When she felt the need to deepen her understanding of music, she also began playing the keyboard. She played in bands in high school and led a jazz big band. Geila was then accepted to Berklee College of Music in Boston to study the alto saxophone. Shortly afterwards, she realized that her voice was the instrument she should pursue, and changed her major to singing from her second year. During her time at Berklee, she participated in Vocal Jazz Ensemble taught by her vocal mentor April Arabian, Vocal Summit taught by Bob Stoloff, and Reverence Gospel Choir led by Orville Wright and Dennis Montgomery III. She graduated from Berklee in 1991. Geila returned to her hometown of Kobe following graduation and worked as a TV and radio personality. At FM802, a leading Osaka radio station, she hosted her own program for almost three years. She also co-hosted a morning show for ABC Television. In 1995, the great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake occurred and interrupted the course of her career as a well-known personality and singer, forcing her to take a leave of absence. However, Geila was not ready to give up her dreams of becoming a successful musician. She moved to Tokyo, the cultural center of Japan. There, she sang in TV commercials and worked as a radio personality for InterFM. She worked as a voice actor for Benesse, a major correspondence education and publishing company, which earned her more spots narrating and singing in TV commercials for companies such as Mazda, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Haagen Dazs. In the case of ANA, the commercial was so popular that audiences requested the company disclose the singer's name. In 2002, she began an all-female gospel choir named Voissalot Choir. The group released three albums, sang in TV commercials and performed at Tokyo Disney Sea, JZ Brat and Sweet Basil as well as other renowned clubs. In 2004, Geila gave birth to a son. Six months later, she started singing again. In 2006, she was invited to teach at a high-ranking jazz school. In 2007, she met the highly acclaimed male vocalist Ayumu Yahaba, and they started singing duo shows entitled SOLO-DUO. In 2009, after successfully leading Voissalot Choir to the Apollo Theater in New York, Geila decided to concentrate her efforts on solo shows. In 2010, she earned the Grand-Prix title for the annual Kobe Jazz Vocal Queen Contest which entitled her to sing a highly acclaimed show at the renowned jazz club Jazz Alley in Seattle. In October of the same year, she released her first solo album, all Me, which surprisingly became a megahit among jazz audiences although many people had never heard of her before. Print media feedback has also been very positive: the top jazz magazines in Japan, Jazz Japan, Jazz Life and Jazz Hihyo [Jazz Review], gave high praise, and the national newspaper Asahi Shimbun dedicated two feature articles. On September 21, 2011 Geila released her second solo album appearance and went on tour throughout Japan with her band, sharing her music with warm and welcome audiences. Her final live performance at JZ Brat in the Shibuya district of Tokyo was sold out and full of fans anxious to hear songs from the second album. Currently, Geila performs regularly at top jazz clubs and concert halls throughout Japan. She also teaches jazz vocals at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music on a regular basis. Not fossil, not mummy, a very lively, homem bon-vivant in a swinging city, no less. Wrapped in that petrous Goa basalt, he is tough as nails. He does petrify me, however: but then Gabe has long embraced 'perfidious Albion' and so we can half-embrace him too. eric. [Goanet] Goans and Goa
I do not know from time way back my childhood days Goans did not love Goa. Everything is green else where but in Goa. So many left Goa and migrated . They have taken that citizenship so if those who do not love Goa why call yourself Goans ? We are the unfortunate ones who have taken Goa as our motherland and have stuck to this dirty place. Beggars are no chosers so we cannot go anywhere and we find this place is ours. How many of us know that India's education is the best that is the reason USA has been importing scientist from India and are making them their citizens. India is a land of culture and we have moral values. Foreigners take pleasure in visiting and studying Indian history and geography and culture. India has lots of different types of dances. Bharat natiam, bangra dance , katakali are few to name. Many times those who have desserted us come to visit us and boast of the rich environment they are floating in but in reality some of them are working as waiters, stewards etc. I knew one Engineer working in Bombay and getting 60 thousand rupees a month some twenty years ago. His wife's dream was to settle in the west. They spent not less than 10 lakhs to get there and no job. He was working as a steward in a bar or restuarant. Officer in the rank nothing in the bank. I am not jealous. But I do not like anyone to say he or she was from Indian origin. You left India you left your identity. You do not love India or Goa do not come back go else where. am I insulting you ? no but you are insulting me. I feel insulted when some one comes and tells me that in the west it is like that what is GOa a land of what are these roads ? shi, cows and bulls on the road shi what is this in amerraica it is like this and in canada it is like that. In london it is like this and you cannot compare australia to goa what is goa a land of ghantis ? here this is what people have spat on my face. I keep quiet because I am earning rupees and what does it cost me to keep quiet Nothingwhen I spoke about Joe uk bab sending pictures of fish which I cannot buy some one from canada told me that so and so fish is there in toronto. He is boasting in fact I doubt whther the same guy can ever afford to buy fish as he is earning by the hour. He cannot afford a holiday every year because he gets only 15 days unpaid leave where as I am working for a small company which gives me 25 days paid leave and sometimes if my boss is in the mood he gives me 30 days paid leave. My husband's boss sends him to different parts of the world and my husband took me along paying for my ticket .Why should people talk so harsh to others just because you live in europe ? is Europe a heaven or a purgotary ?
[Goanet] Alien labels.
Japan grants citizenship to the foreign spouses of her natives. It comes with a small catch: the person must acquire and register a Japanese name. A child born in Portugal can only carry a Portuguese name at the registry. A visitor, like a trader or diplomat, is issued a birth certificate that says 'male' or 'female' child born to the person who is named in the document as the parent. A French child cannot be John, for example, he must be Jean. The rule is not imposed on a person who is not deemed to be French. eric. (Very Ugaritic/Semitic = Arrik, very Skandanavyan = Erik, variously 'royal' to 'prince' in Riftic Sanskrit meanderings.)
