[Goanet-News] FEATURE: An Untitled Canvas -- profile of Vasudeo Gaitonde (The Indian Express)

2014-01-06 Thread Goanet Reader
An Untitled Canvas

Who was Vasudeo Gaitonde? An artist of the 1950s Progressive
movement, who veered away to find his own language of
abstraction. An artist so deeply distrustful of labels that
he refused to title his works. An artist who said he thought
of a painting in terms of music: I hear colours. A son who
snapped ties with his family and never looked back.

Piecing together the life of India's foremost
-- abstract artist and now its most expensive,
after his jewel-like painting sold for Rs 23.7
crore at a Christie's auction last month, the
highest price an Indian painting has fetched --
brings one up against many walls of silence and
accounts of connections lost. Long before the art
market began to realise his worth, Gaitonde had
shut out the world, preferring the life of a recluse.

Born in Nagpur to Goan parents in 1924, Vasudeo was a few
months old when his father, who worked in a printing press,
shifted to their ancestral village Uscai in Mapusa, Goa,
where Gaitonde spent the first five to six years of his life.

The family -- four sisters and a son -- later shifted to
Mumbai, where Gaitonde went to Gokhale High School on Grant
Road and then joined JJ School of Art, graduating with a
diploma in 1948. In college, Gaitonde went through the
usual rigour, painting figurative works, which are still
around. It was only after graduating that he started
experimenting with abstraction, the Indian kind that had a
touch of spirituality to it. He began with calligraphic
drawings, and then experimented with symbols and collages,
says Ranjit Hoskote, poet and curator.

There was nothing better than to be an artist in Bombay at
the time, when the air throbbed with promise of greater
marvels. The Progressive Artists' Movement, founded in 1947
by SH Raza, MF Husain and Francis Newton Souza, and which was
later joined by Tyeb Mehta, Akbar Padamsee, Ram Kumar and
others, had broken with older traditions, and was forging an
Indian modernism. Gaitonde, who was invited to join the
group, was in the thick of those fiery debates.

He was a short, dapper man, as lean as his conversations. He
worked out of a studio at Bhulabhai Desai Institute, a
multidisciplinary institute in Mumbai, which was the hub of
the Indian avant-garde. Ravi Shankar held music classes there
and Ebrahim Alkazi rehearsed his theatre productions.

Gaitonde was surrounded by Husain, Mehta, Krishen Khanna and
Raza, who all had studios there. Those conversations between
the young artists shaped what he wanted to achieve, says
Hoskote.

But the path he was to carve for himself was different. While
many of the Progressives looked to Europe for inspiration,
Gaitonde's first solo show was in New York in 1959, and then
again in 1963, when he was offered a fellowship by the
Rockefeller Foundation for a year.

Delhi-based Progressive artist Krishen Khanna, who
visited his friend Gai in New York a year later,
remembers the two of them visiting the studio of
the great American abstract artist Mark Rothko to
see his brilliant black-and-white works. Unlike
many others, Gai did not take up abstracts because
he could not get the linear proportions of figures
right. He was exemplary in those too, but
abstracts is what attracted him. Paul Klee and
Rothko were his inspirations, and their influence
lent a Zen-like, meditative quality to his
  canvases, says Khanna.

An American critic once called his art non-objective and
that description that resonated with him. In the early
1960s, he experimented with a new style, employing palette
knives and paint rollers and even torn pieces of newspaper to
create semi-abstract forms.

Gallery owner Arun Vadehra first met him at his house in
Nizamuddin, Delhi in 1992, accompanied by a common friend.
He said he was busy. What was he doing, the friend asked.
He said, nothing. He wasn't afraid of that reply. For him,
there was nothing wrong with doing nothing, says Vadehra.

That idea of nothingness drew him to Zen philosophy. In his
paintings, nothing was very important, says Vadehra, who
also says that he did not use an easel.

Gaitonde, though, was not keen on being slotted in
either the figurative or the abstract camps. In an
interview dated March 15, 1964 to the *The
Illustrated Weekly of India*, he had said, I feel
I should not wear any label. I moved away from
academism to abstract vision because I wanted to
develop my sense of pattern and colour…to paint
with figures as subjects is a hindrance... my
entire outlook changed when I came to know that the
Chinese have no epics to boast -- for the simple
reason that an epic covers a long period of time.
Any abstract feeling -- love, courage,

Adjacent building starts collapsing, rescue work stopped

GOANEWS DESK, CANACONA | 06 January 2014 13:49 IST

Another building, adjacent to the collapsed building of Ruby
Residency, has also started collapsing.

As a result, the rescue work has been stopped by the authorities.

There is nobody staying in this building as it was also under construction.

South Goa collector Venecio Furtado told goanews.com that the painted
building adjacent to the collapsed building has started tilting.

“We could even notice major cracks developed in the building. The
rescue work has thus been stopped”, he said.

One house, which is close to this building, has also been evacuated,
said Furtado.

Even electricity to the whole area has been cut off, as a safety measure.

It is a block of four buildings, even having a common staircase, one
building of which had collapsed on 4 January, causing major mishap.

The adjacent buildings had developed cracks, but the rescue teams had
continued its work pulling out people even alive, taking risk.

Realising the danger of adjacent buildings collapsing, the authorities
had yesterday evening had stopped the work for a while, but then
decided to resume it at night.

However, Furtado said they had no other option than to stop the rescue
work since one building has started tilting.

The rescue teams had succeeded in pulling out 45 workers trapped
inside, including 17 dead bodies.

The authorities have also managed to get information about 10 more
workers trapped inside while few more may also be trapped.

He should have been questioned because he is the

going that proverbial extra mile on cementing the

 SHOCKING NEWS FROM PARRIKAR

Yesterday on 3rd Jan 2014, I have read in all the local newspapers a
news report coming from Parrikar telling Goans that he will not allow
an entry into the casinos by February end. This news came to us as
shocking and embarrassing to all the Goans especially for those who
would like to play or were adapted with the casino gambling eventhough
it is not good. It is not fair for Goans only to shut their entry into
the casinos as it is not their fault since casinos ships are already
having permission to remain in Mandovi by Parrikar and having their
offices in the shores of Panjim. It is very simple, how one can be
stopped entry into his own house. The first step what Parrikar should
have done is sent these casinos out of anchorage away from Mandovi
river and then automatically Goans presence in casinos would have
been limited or reduced to minimum. By giving such an order that Goans
will into be allowed entry in casinos is very much insulting to us.
In the same yardstick he could have very well said for no alcohol
drinking, no gambling in 5-star hotels, no prostitution, no urination,
no defecation, no smoking, no dancing in open streets/roads/halls etc
is allowed in this state. I feel he should think twice before such an
 order is in force.

Collapsed building in Goa was opposed as illegal

http://www.goanews.com/news_disp.php?newsid=4746

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 04 January 2014

*Phase I of Ruby Residency*

The building that collapsed in Canacona today afternoon killing many
workers has been in controversy over several years now due to alleged
illegalities, political patronage and one such collapse of the slab of the
same building last year.

In spite of stiff opposition to the project of Ruby Residency, the
‘powerful’ builder has apparently managed to construct and sell both its
phases while the tragedy occurred today in the second phase of the project.

The five-storey building that collapsed today afternoon was part of the
sold out second phase.

Bharat Developers, the same builder, has also completed two phases of yet
another project Bharat Heights, near Chapoli dam.

While both these projects are residential in nature, Palolem Plaza, yet
another commercial project of Bharat Developers has been opened for sale by
the builders.

All the three projects have been promoted as either at Palolem beach or in
the close vicinity of the beach, which is a world attraction.

As its websites states, Bharat Developers and Realtors Pvt Ltd belongs to
one British NRI, having 15-year experience in European design and standards
while another partner is a Navi Mumbai-based real estate developer.

With both the phases of both the projects sold out, the website states that
its ‘family’ now consists of 350 households.

*Most controversial among these was the Ruby Residency, which was
constructed by cutting the hillock behind Chaudi, the market place of
Canacona taluka, and even the paddy fields in the area were converted. *
*While the locals opposed the environmental destruction, it is alleged the
local politicians belonging to the Assembly as well as the Canacona
municipality managed to get all the permissions to the project.*

Ruby Residency, the first phase of which is ready to move, is now caught up
in a controversy since its four floors collapsed today afternoon, killing
several workers and injuring seriously the rest.

The Residency, having one, two and three bedroom flats, also provides a
swimming pool, pool-side restaurant, club house with gymnasium, badminton
and basketball court, garden and children’s play area.

Bharat Heights, another project in two phases at Chapoli dam, has flats
with independent gardens and even penthouses.

The Palolem Plaza however has commercial shops as well as high quality
resort style apartments, with a swimming pool and other posh amenities.

The world around us is moving at warp speed and drastic CHANGE (always

[Goanet] FEATURE: An Untitled Canvas -- profile of Vasudeo Gaitonde (The Indian Express)

17 Reasons Pope Francis Is The Most Extraordinary Human Being Of 2013
1276

Pope Francis has been declared Time’s Person Of The Year. Looking back on 2013,
he has done some incredibly progressive things to lead the Church.

1. He spoke out against frivolous spending by the Church

Source: catholic-ew.org.uk

The average set of cardinal’s clothes costs as much as $20,000. In October,
Pope Francis urged officials to dress more modestly and to not squander such
money. In the same month, he ordered a German bishop to explain how he had
spent $3 million on a marble courtyard.

2. He invited a boy with Downs Syndrome for a ride in the Popemobile

During a general audience, Pope Francis invited Alberto di Tullio, a
17-year-old boy with Downs Syndrome, to ride in his Popemobile while thousands
watched.

3. He embraced and kissed Vinicio Riva

November saw Pope Francis embrace Vinicio Riva, a man scarred by a genetic
disease. Fighting agonising pain on a daily basis, such an act restored the
faith of a man who says that he is often mocked in public.

4. Denounced the judgment of homosexuals

Source: cnn.com

Pope Francis has stated several times that the Church has no right to interfere
spiritually in the lives of gays and lesbians. Though Francis maintained the
right of the Church to express opinions on homosexuality, he believes that
Christians should not judge or ridicule.

5. He held a major ceremony at the chapel of a youth prison

In March, the Pope held a major Holy Week service at Casal del Marmo jail for
minors, rather than the Vatican. During the service, the pope washed and kissed
the feet of 12 young offenders to commemorate Jesus' gesture of humility
towards his apostles on the night before he died.

6. He urged the protection of the Amazon Rainforest

During his visit to Brazil, Pope Francis met with natives who have been
fighting ranchers and farmers attempting to invade their land. He encouraged
that the Amazon be treated as a garden and protected.

7. He personally called and consoled a victim of rape

A 44-year old Argentinian woman, raped by a local policeman, was one of
thousands to write a letter to Pope Francis in 2013. The woman was surprised
when she later received a phone call from Francis himself--who consoled the
woman and told her, “You are not alone.”

8. He snuck out of the Vatican to feed the homeless

More recently, it has been discovered that Pope Francis regularly leaves the
Vatican at night to feed the homeless. Dressed as an ordinary priest, he joins
Archbishop Konrad Krajewski to feed the poor of Rome.

9. He auctioned his motorcycle to benefit the homeless

In October, Francis donated his own Harley Davidson motorcycle to fund a hostel
and soup kitchen in Rome.

10. He acknowledged that atheists can be good people

Earlier in 2013, Pope Francis spoke out against the common interpretation
within the Church that atheists, by nature, are bad people. He stated that,
“Atheists should be seen as good people if they do good.” After meeting the
Pope, the openly atheist president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, compared Francis to
a friendly neighbor.

11. He condemned the global financial system

In May, Francis denounced the global financial system for tyrannizing the poor
and turning humans into expendable consumer goods. He believes that, “Money has
to serve, not to rule!

12. He fought child abuse

Source: bbcimg.co.uk

The Catholic Church has been rocked in recent years by allegations and
admissions of child abuse by members of the Church. Pope Francis became the
first Pope to take effective action against such atrocities. He ammended
Vatican law to make sexual abuse of children a crime, and he also established a
committee to fight abuse.

13. He condemned the violence of the Syrian civil war

In regard to the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Pope Francis asked for peace
and declared that, War, never again. Violence never leads to peace, war leads
to war, violence leads to violence.”

The group has not visited Goa for some 20 years and are longing to have

Can someone please indicate names and addresses if possible of the

No interest in entering Casinos - either to work or play in
I know of at least other one country which does not allow locals to gamble in
its own casinos. It isn't (from what I understand) related as much to 'morals
as to protect the state against having to deal with a citizen who went broke
and hence became a burden to the state.

This is likely to be challenged on the grounds of discrimination against

Even so, Monaco can legislate for her own citizens. Are there folks known as

Or is it that All Indian citizens are prevented from playing in the casino?

[Goanet] Please Sign Our SGS Online Petition.

2014-01-06 Thread murielmario
Dear Netters,

Despite all our dialogue with various elected representatives, the Goa
Govt. is going ahead with the land acquisition for the Garbage Treatment
Plant (GTP) at the present garbage dump site. Everyone has completely
ignored our 5-point charter to shift the GTP to a safer location just 700
mts. away.

In view of this, the Saligao Garbage Struggle (SGS) has started a global,
online petition at Change.org, from Goenkars worldwide and others concerned
about Goa and the planet's environment.

The petition is addressed to the following officials:

1. Manohar Parrikar, Goa Chief Minister Chairman-High Level Task Force
(Garbage)
2. Dilip Parulekar, Saligao MLA Goa Tourism Minister
3. Francis D'Souza, Dy. Chief Minister of Goa Dy. Chairman-High Level
Task Force (Garbage)
4. B Vijayan, Chief Secretary-Govt. of Goa.
5. Alina D'Souza, Goa Environment Minister Member-High Level Task Force
(Garbage)
6. Eknath Oraskar, Saligao Sarpanch Chairman-Panchayat Waste Management
Committee

The petition is important first to Saligao and then to the whole of Goa,
because our govt. needs to set up Garbage Treatment Plants (GTP) along
these lines:

- choose the right technology for Goa's climate: temperature, humidity,
monsoons etc.
- choose the right technology for Goa's garbage: for example, coastal,
tourism garbage is different from general garbage.
- choose the right location:* not* eco-sensitive zones like hills,
plateaus, riversides or close to the High Tide Line and *not* near
residential areas.
- insist on segregation at source (unbelievably, our govt. is collecting
unsegregated, coastal tourism garbage for this GTP!).
- shifting this GTP to the safer alternative, just 700 mts. away will
establish a precedent for all future plants to be safe for the environment
and for people.
- if the GTP is not shifted to the alternative site, 700 mts away, the
Saligao Garbage Struggle will be forced into a legal battle that will stop
work and be a problem for all concerned.

[Goanet] Maestro Carlos Rodrigues Musical genius

2014-01-06 Thread Nelson Lopes
Maestro Carlos (Carlito) Rodrigues

He was affectionately known as Carlito Mestre. He was born to
Mr Remedios Joao Rodrigues and Mrs Belarmina Fernandes atChinchinim on
11th November 1911 and was among two children. He was happily married to
Mrs Argentina Furtado of Deussua, Chinchinim. She was his sheet anchor
supporting, untiringly with arrangements for numerous band practices at the
residence. He breathed his last with a mild heart attack on 13th September
1975.

He was naturally gifted with the talent of singing, right from the very
early age and developed his interest with devotion and encouragement. In
those days making a career in Music was not profitable, not encouraged or
kindly looked upon, but it was with his passion and determination that he
pursued it. Nevertheless, much against the advice of his elders, at the age
of 21 years, he founded the band called “Banda Cecilia de Chinchinim” with
meagre resources, in honour of the patron saint of musicians, St. Cecilia
and every year he used to dedicate a holy mass in her honour on 22nd November.
Initially, he was engaged locally, playing for functions with moderate
success. Gradually, he ventured beyond and was much acclaimed and sought
after for his performances

He rightly earned the title of “Maestro” being proficient in playing a
variety of musical instruments and achieving mastery in solo, alto
Saxophone, besides delighting with ease the Violin with his nibble fingers,
and Clarinet too. He created his own compositions which received accolades
and appreciation from music lovers and composers. Wishing to showcase his
talents and in search of greener pastures for a better more comfortable
life, he left for Colombo, Ceylon with the then famous band leader from
the village Mr Josico Menezes, who had tremendous influence on him and who
helped him shape his dreams and future. He played with his band there for
two years and which won great acceptance and admiration of people. He was
thus conferred with two prestigious Honours in Colombo for his musical
renditions

Feeling home sick, he returned to his native place, and with his
experience, confidently decided to form the new band, baptized as RADIO
SERENADERS in 1948. It was a big band of 10 musicians and with favourite
nomenclature, he continued to his very end. Recognition and appreciations
followed him with great success. It was the leading, most sought after band
from North to South Goa and modestly designated as the first, pioneering
brass band of Goa. He performed at most important leading venues, popular,
prestigious and famous dances and functions. The band added grace,
happiness and life to the occasion. The RADIO SERENADERS was in such great
demands, that booking in advance was an absolute necessity to connoisseur
of music, not to be disappointed. His fame thus spread far and wide and he
carved a niche amongst the greatest musicians of all times, till his
passing away in 1975. It can be truly said that he stormed the bastion of
music scene with his entrance on musical horizon of Goa, that he left many
other existing bands far behind. He brought to the music lovers in Goa
compositions of famous musicians like Harry James, Artie Shaw, Duke
Ellington, Glenn Miles, among many others.

His loyal, faithful band of musicians consisted of Joaquim. 1st Trumpet,
(Moira), Degolacao, 2nd Trumpet (Sirlim), Fransquino 2nd alto sax (Mungul,
Margao), Pedro Antonio Fernandes, tenor sax (Colva), Baptist Tavares, 2nd tenor
sax (Rachol), Piedade Francis Fernandes, Drums (Madel, Margao), Lume Gomes,
Banjo, (Navelim) Joao Goes, double bass (Chinchinim); Carmo, Belino and
Seby Fernandes, crooners that enhanced the prestige

After his death, his sons Mr. Neon and Mr. Lucio carried the torch
forward, continuing with the best traditions and the standards set by their
father from 1975 to 1988.

Mr Neon was proficient in playing with alto saxophone, drums, keyboard, and
guitar. Mr Lucio was a part of the band playing rhythm guitar. The transfer
of Mr Lucio to Bombay and advent of electronic music, with numerous small
groups the economics made survival difficult, However Mr. Neon continues
with his musical school, transferring his expertise to the young music
enthusiast in guitar, drums, violin and keyboard.

I recall with gratitude how Carlito Mestre, voluntarily entertained our
meets of youngsters during Christmas and New Year nights, even though he
was advised rest. He was a simple, humble unassuming professional, but a
great loving, personality

He leaves behind his other children Mrs Wenefrida Pereira, Mrs,Marina
Fernandes, Mrs. Benecia Diniz, who are well settled in life, with their
children professionally qualified.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Feast of the Baptism of Jesus

2014-01-06 Thread Jude Botelho
5-Jan-2013

Dear friend,

We all like to be affirmed by people, especially by significant people whom we
admire and love. We like to believe that we are known and are associated with
influential people and clubbed with them. But we do not like to be associated
with the poor, the weak and the less privileged of society and keep our
distance from them. Jesus, however, preferred to identify himself with the
poor, the deprived and the drop-outs of his time. He came to be one with us in
solidarity with mankind. At His baptism he identified with sinful humanity and
was identified as Son of God. May we cherish being well beloved children of our
Father-God!! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: Feast of the Baptism of Jesus This is my beloved Son with
whom I am well pleased! 12-Jan-2014
Isaiah 42: 1-4, 6-7;          Acts 10: 34-38;          Matthew 3: 13-17;

Isaiah invites the Israelites to hope for a new world where God will reveal his
glory. This newness will be brought about by his chosen servant, God's beloved
servant, endowed with his spirit. It is not quite certain who this Servant is
that is referred to, but it is certain it is not referring to an individual,
but to the people itself, Israel, as God's chosen instrument. The prophet is
primarily referring to Israel as the chosen one of God. Israel is reminded of
its universal mission to be the servant for all nations. The chosen one will
not dominate but will fulfill his mission by humble service. This mission looks
impossible humanly speaking but will be realized in Jesus Christ the new
Israel, the chosen one of God

Initiation Rite
Remember the initiation rites of our ancestors? In some places, as in the
Sepik, even today, they lock teenage boys in an enclosure for a month of
isolation. Here their bodies, especially their backs are cut and bled. They are
taught to bear pain. They are taught all the labours of the clan. After four
weeks they are let out of the spirit house, and now they enter into a new life.
That is the life of an adult. Now they can marry. In one place on the Sepik the
boys crawled out of the initiation enclosure through the jaws of the imitation
crocodile. This is symbolic for being born again into a new life.-Baptism means
the same thing: entry into a new life; it also gives us a new status, just like
what the initiate has achieved.
Frank Michalic in 'Tonic for the heart'

All four gospels speak of the preaching and the baptism for repentance of John
the Baptist and that of the baptism by John. That Jesus was baptized by John
posed a difficulty for the early church, given the fact that Jesus was sinless.
John himself was hesitant to baptize Jesus. However the fact of his baptism
that it is reported in all four gospel accounts testifies to its authenticity.
Jesus did not need to be baptized by John but in choosing to be baptized he
symbolized his readiness to be one with humanity, in solidarity with the human
race. It was as though Jesus was proclaiming: I am one with you! I am on your
side! The Gospel account tells us that the moment of Christ's submission to
God's will, the moment he accepted to be one with humanity with its weakness
and sinfulness, Jesus was accepting all the consequences: becoming the Lamb of
God ready to be sacrificed for the sins of the world. This moment of acceptance
also became the moment when
the Father acknowledged His son. He gave his sign of recognition and approval.
No sooner had he come up out of the water than he saw the heavens torn apart
and the Spirit like a dove descending on him. And a voice came from the heavens
You are my son the beloved; my favour rests on you.  The baptism of Jesus
thus becomes a moment of oneness of Jesus with the human race 'I am on your
side!' with God also proclaiming his oneness with his own Son: I am on your
side! You are my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. This affirmation
was accompanied with signs, the heavens parting, God revealing himself through
the descent of the Spirit and through his own word spoken to all who cared to
listen and believe. The Servant of God is also the well-beloved Son of the
Father. In life all of us need to be affirmed and the most meaningful
affirmation comes from those who love us.

plight, a young Belgian priest, Damien De Veuster, asked to be allowed to
minister to them. Straightaway he realized that there was only one way to do
this: that was to go and live among them. Having got permission, he went to
Molokai. At first he tried to minister to them while keeping a certain
distance. But he soon realized that he had to live among them to gain their
trust.

Re: [Goanet] DISQUIET ABOUT THE AAM AADMI PARTY

Though I do not agree on Aires concern, I do have a concern that AAP may be
too left for the country at these times. Anyway, hope they get a
good number of seats in the parliament to keep a check on corruption.

The concern regarding the credentials and genuineness of the Aam Aadmi
Party (APP) is on account of it being strategically steered and geared by
some Hindu extremist *Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh* (*RSS*) pracharaks. We
are witnessing it in Goa too. Understandably perception is growing of it
being the undercover incognito B team of the BJP with some naïve altar boys
drafted in the usual saffron shrewd style to split the anti-BJP secular
votes. The background and also lineage of some of the members of this
outfit will expose the true colours of these power-thirsty hounds.

Today, politics which was meant to be a mission is sadly no longer a
straight forward sincere game. It has become a business venture paying very
high dividends. Despite the Election Commission’s all out efforts, the
political chess board has become as curved, curled and crooked as it can
get. The common man should therefore be very cautious and vigilant. Look
beyond the curtains and read between the lines while sniffing the political
 broth that is cooking.

In Goa, we have witnessed some of our MLA’s and MPs of the 60’s and the
70’s languish and die as paupers. Over the last three decades however,
their breed across party lines has morphed from rags to riches. While the
politicians have just got richer and richer, the common man has been
mercilessly short changed having to bear the brunt of high inflation,
rampant corruption and ever escalating cost of living.

Anna Hazare wears the Gandhi cap at all times. In contrast some of these
AAP decoys seem to be wearing it only to draw public glare. We even see
Arvind Kejriwal now wearing that cap less frequently. Is it because they
are indeed more comfortable with the saffron scarf? With the very crucial
Lok Sabha elections just round the corner the hidden agenda will soon be
all out in the open. While the broom may sweep out some of the old timers,
the other end may soon be used to whip the common man.
