[Goanet-News] Politics for us was a means... for Mali -- Marissa Coutinho Samake (by Remediana Dias)
POLITICS FOR US WAS A MEANS... FOR MALI -- MARISSA COUTINHO SAMAKE Present-day Mali was once part of three West African empires that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire (for which Mali is named), and the Songhai Empire. During its golden age, there was a flourishing of mathematics, astronomy, literature, and art. At its peak in 1300, Mali covered an area about twice the size of modern-day France, and stretched to the west coast of Africa, as the Wikipedia puts it. In the late 19th century, during the Scramble for Africa, France seized control of Mali, making it a part of French Sudan. And there's a Goan story tied up there too! Being a successful woman is a common goal. A certain prestige comes with being successful in life. However, everyone defines success differently. For some, it's about the money; for others, it's about being able to do what they want to do on a daily basis. For Marissa Coutinho Samake, it has been a long journey as a Goan from Bahrain -- to US to Mali. She speaks to Goanet's cybercorrespondent Remediana Remy Dias about her journey and how she wants to continue making a difference in others' lives. RD: Tell us about yourself. I have lived a relatively blessed life. I believe my parents gave me every opportunity to succeed. I was born in 1983 on the tiny island of Bahrain. My parents who are both Goans, were working there and in fact still reside there today. Mine was small family and I have an older brother. After finishing up high school in Bahrain, my parents were intent on sending me for college in the US. I got accepted into Brigham Young University and completed my Bachelor's in Information Systems. During my time in Utah (USA), I met my husband Yeah Samaké. Yeah is from Mali. We have two children: Keanen (7 years) and Carmen (5 years). In 2011, Yeah decided to run for the Presidency in Mali. We wanted to help bring change to one of the poorest nations in the world and we believed we could. We moved our entire family to Mali from the US. For me, my family is everything, a gift from God. If the family fails, then anything we do in life is a failure. I love to do the things that better the lives of those around me, if even to bring a smile for one sec. On the other hand, the one thing that bothers me more than anything is dishonesty. The shortness of time in life right now does not permit many hobbies, but I love to read when I can. RD: What has been the challenging part being the life partner of an aspiring President of a country? I am not a politician, by any means. In fact I am everything a politician should not be. Open and blunt. I spent much of my professional career in management and customer relations in the US. When Yeah became a Mayor of Ouelessebougou, Mali, in 2009 I became the first lady of Ouelessebougou by default. When Yeah decided to run for President in 2011, he had my full support. But politics is something I have had to grow into. Politics in Mali is much like it is in India and most places in the world. Corruption is the name of the game. For me that was my biggest challenge. Here it is so integrated in the way of life that many do not even see it as corruption. We had to fight being relatively new, but also competing with politicians that had stolen money from the country for 20+ years. During our campaign, we maintained a transparency about how our funds were used. There was a check and balance and accountability standards that took many Malians involved in our team off guard. When people expect differently, they act differently. The challenge is not force a change, it is to affect change through example. Also to counter possible corruption, we did all our fundraising in the US, so we did not have to answer to special interest groups within Mali's political sphere. However this also made it challenging and while we were blessed to raise how much we did, we were short of the amount needed to truly campaign in the four corners of Mali. Nevertheless, the opportunity was amazing. I had some amazing opportunities to meet with many women and hear first hand their challenges. I loved getting to meet all our youth and seeing their drive and passion that will one day run the country. It was amazing to watch our youth use tablets as a new innovative way to spread the message of change. It was refreshing to see the youth volunteer their time for our campaign setting up support clubs and campaigning on their own time and dime. When our videos played in Mali and our billboards calling

[Goanet] Bank Strikes
Again and again the bank employees strike and we customers are the most sufferers. What kind of service does these so called bank employees giving us ? long ques, abuses, several trips to the banks to get small work done etc etc. Why does Aires Rodrigues take up this issue instead of cleaning ministers, and advocates appointed by courts ? I would have saluted him if he had to file a case on our behalf putting these strikes at rest once for all. I request readers to do at least one thing. I have started a letter to herald editor highlighting this issue. I would be happy if each of you just sit or the net and send a email to Herald or navhindtimes or any newspaper stating your resentment over bank strikes. Can you do it ? or will you say like a typical goan I have ATM card so these strike do not affect me. i too have atm card but I am thinking of all old people who do not know to use atm cards . what about other service ? take courage. When I see a letter in the newspaper i will call you a brave person or else ?

[Goanet] Hot Loves Valentine Day Recall
Dear readers Nearly over a hundred and fifty years ago some of our ancestors left Goa with their Potlos and koitos leaving the Pearl of the Orient having been told “the world is your oyster”. Our Goykars are the only community I know that can be European and Indian at the same time. Today’s disgruntled and homeless new arrivals in breadline Britain from Goa find solace at the great institution built by the son of a carpenter from Nazareth. After Sunday service it is now common to hear of a scuffle or two going on resulting in hospital admission. All in the name of LOVE. Let me explain. When today’s young men left Goa in this century to seek their fortune they left their lady loves behind and asked their fellow Goykars in Goa to “look after them”. Their fellow Goykars in Goa are doing just that - looking properly after their lady loves. This is now turning into jealousy and “pistols after Sunday service” in other words a proper Goan kestao. Local settled Goykars in the United Kingdom who have been here for years and who were once “Proud to be Goan” are becoming embarrassed to be associated with these “Koitoheads” who are easy to spot, just like the Koito they are sharp, bent and given the chance are ready to eat you out of house and home including your job. With the festa dis season around the corner these koitoheads will gate crash a function towards the end with no dress code and trainers expecting everyone to welcome them. They bring with them Goa’s next export – corruption. The settled Goykars mainly from East Africa have resolved their embarrassment, the men now prefer to say that they come from Daman and ladies from Dui. Valentine’s Day signals the end of the chocolate run to Goa which started in October. Special request to the hot loves in Goa, please recall these koitoheads and stop the massacre and extermination of our Goan tribe. Lets all work toward being Proud to be Goan and Viva World Goa Day 2014. Melvyn Fernandes Thornton Heath, Surrey, United Kingdom 12 February 2014
Re: [Goanet] Why not 'Cheers!
I have been over half my life in the US, but that has only improved all of the Indian languages I speak and have picked up others. So too long but sharper while I often hear a schmear of smarm as to the difficulties of being able to speak in say Konkani. Space and where I live, has not made me forget where my roots lie, and when you can no longer call those roots, one roots or lived aesthetics. The reference to Japan I presume is intended to be tongue-in-cheek. OK. I am on my own there. But, one grain of info: I am the only one I know of Indian extraction who has a high rank in Shodo. Just saying that: this too has not make me forget anything from my years in India. But this is merely info, and not to get media. Hell no. Furthermore, I am aware of and engaged with English/British phrases, and that they have their denoted and connoted variances. My point was for Floriano and for him alone although said on a public forum; whereby in saying something other voices arise, reveal something or the other. One more fun fact: I probably have over 150 dictionaries in various languages, Now this is an opportunity if not to say, then at least to hold onto the thought:** What? Man, look how stupid he! Now everything in on the computer and he is telling us he has all these books!!! The point of course is otherwise. ** I know certain things and have a sense of thought as they conjure themselves in minds, being around various individuals, was helped, abused and manipulated by others; and shared many a thing with some of the most ruthless people one could know and run with. Best as always all. + Venantius J Pinto On 2/11/14, Venantius J Pinto venantius.pi...@gmail.com wrote: Horse if to mean me, responded. [Goanet] WILL SUDIN TAKE UP ROAD REPAIRS ONCE AGAIN IF BADLY EXECUTED?
To, The Editor HERALD Panaji Ref: News report appeared in local daily dated 12.2.2014 ( Tuesday), Dhavalikar says people play major role in road quality by informing PWD Dept. It is very strange that the Minister of PWD Sudin Dhavalikar expecting people role on role quality by informing the department of PWD after the road is already completed and the expenditure is meted to the contractors. Why PWD not competent on supervision the work? The main point of this question raised by him is whether the PWD will take up the work badly executed once again and the fresh tenders expecting to issue? Has anytime in the history of PWD the work is being stopped once the complaint is made by public? This announcement is made by Sudin is merely an eye wash. Stephen Dias D.Paula

The residency will be held from 12th Feb to 22nd Feb. 2014, out of which 8 days will be spent in remote areas of Goa and the last 3 days at Goa Chitra museum where they will work, do presentations, interact with media other fellow artists and general public. What has the relic in Coloane near Macau got to do with the Ceylonese claim that the uncorrupted body in Old Goa is that of a Buddhist monk. It is irrelevant thinking like this that probably made Salazar say Goa is ours when Nehru asked him sometime in the mid-50s, what would be the best solution for the future of Goa. Salazars meaning was; I see no future for Goa. Roland. There is relic of the saint in a chapel named after his name in a place called Coloane which is an island south of Macau. [Goanet] Press Release 11/2/2014
-- Forwarded message -- From: NCPRI India ncpri.in...@gmail.com Date: Tue, Feb 11, 2014 at 6:04 PM Subject: Press Release 11/2/2014 To: NCPRI India ncpri.in...@gmail.com Press Release 11/2/2014 Families colleagues of whistleblowers arrested Today at 4 pm more than 100 relatives and colleagues of whistleblowers were arrested from outside the BJP office. The families, along with NCPRI activists, were demanding that the BJP clarify its stand on the grievance redress bill and whistleblowers protection bill and assure them that the BJP will support the bills in Parliament. The protestors sat outside the BJP office for more than 4 hours demanding that the BJP make a statement. No one from the BJP office spoke to the protestors. The protestors, mostly women, were arrested by the Police. A meeting of Mr. Modi with the BJP MPs was to start at 4:30 pm. The protestors were relatives and colleagues of slain whistleblowers Satyendra Dubey, Shimbu Bishnoi, Ram Thakur and were peacefully sitting outside the BJP office. Activists Anjali Bhardwaj, Amrita Johri Praavita Kashyap of the NCPRI were arrested along with the families of whistleblowers. The families were also simultaneously protesting outside the Congress office. B. K. Hariprasad, MP, addressed the protestors who said that Congress will make every effort to push these bills in Parliament. Aruna Roy, Nikhil Dey and Shekhar Singh of the NCPRI strongly condemned the arrest of the families and activists. They said that people protesting peacefully should not have been removed using force. People have been promised by all political parties that these 2 critical bills will be passed in the ongoing session of Parliament. It is a shame that Parliament is not functioning and that people who are demanding answers from political parties are being ill-treated. All political parties need to answer why critical bills are being made scapegoats in the political stand-off in Parliament. [Goanet] ANOTHER F.I.R FILED AT ACB AGAINST GOA SPEAKER RAJENDRA ARLEKAR
Another First Information Report (F.I.R) of disproportionate assets and cheating has been filed at the Anti- Corruption Branch (ACB) against Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly Mr. Rajendra Arlekar. The F.I.R filed under Sec 13 (1) (d) (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code has demanded that the ACB carry out a speedy investigation and promptly prosecute Rajendra Arlekar in accordance with law. On 9th February 2012 in his affidavit before the Goa's Chief Electoral officer Rajendra Arlekar had shown his total liabilities by way of loans etc as Rs 30,54,314 and further liabilities by way of Government dues as Rs 2,64,734 but his statement of assets and liabilities filed on 31st July 2013 before the Goa Lokayukta does not show any liabilities. Rajendra Arlekar should explain as to how within a short span of just over a year after becoming Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly he was able to clear his huge liabilities of Rs 30,54,314 and also liabilities by way of Government dues of Rs 2,64,734. The F.I.R has sought that the ACB probe whether the contents of the affidavit of Mr. Rajendra Arlekar filed on 9th March 2012 was false or his statement dated 31st July 2013 on his Assets and liabilities filed before the Goa Lokayukta is false. The attention of the ACB has been drawn to the fact that in his affidavit dated 9th February 2012, Rajendra Arlekar had shown his parents Vishwanath and Tilotoma Arlekar as his dependants though they have for the last many years been staying separately at Mayem. Rajendra Arlekar has also wrongly stated that the value of his plush 72 sq mt flat at Mangor hill in Vasco was a mere Rs 30 lakhs. Rajendra Arlekar in his affidavit on 9th February 2012 had shown his total income for the year 2010-2011 as a mere Rs 2,76,671. This prima facie reveals that Rajendra Arlekar was concealing the real income being earned by him from his HP petrol pump dealership Om Shree Vetobaa at Vasco. The ACB has been asked to investigate as to how the total income of Rajendra Arlekar's wife Anagha Deshpande Arlekar who is a school teacher which was Rs 5,87,186 in 2010-2011 had shot up to Rs 9,32,278 in the year 2012-2013.
